September 29, 2018 Larry Wayne Neeley May 22, 1956 — Sept. 27, 2018 Larry Wayne Neeley, 62, of Bedford, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 27, 2018, at Westview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Born May 22, 1956 in Lawrence County, he was the son of Charles and Patty (Hatfield) Neeley. He married Connie Taylor on July 15, 2006, and she survives. Larry had worked construction for many years. He attended Oolitic Pentecostal Church and enjoyed fishing and camping. Surviving are his wife, Connie, of Bedford; three children, Derek (fiancé Trish) Neeley, of Bedford, Chase (Bree) Neeley, of Bedford, and Terra (Brandon) Neeley Blackwell; two grandchildren, Raelynn Blackwell, Braylie Neeley and expecting another in February; and one brother, Mike Neeley, of Linton. He was preceded in death by his parents. September 28, 2018 Larry Edwards Dec. 17, 1945 — Sept. 24, 2018 Larry N. Edwards, 72, of Columbus, passed away Sept. 24, 2018, at Columbus Regional Hospital. Larry was born Dec. 17, 1945, in Bedford, the son of Austin and Ada Pearl Johnson Edwards. He married Karen Grissom, who survives. Larry retired from Cummins Engine Company after 30-plus years of service. Survivors include his wife; children Kelly (Ralph) Helander, Kevin Edwards and Kathy (Ryan) Colvia; as well as several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; as well as a daughter, Laura Lynn Edwards. Private services will be held at a later date. Ronda Lee Watson, 65, of Bedford passed away on Monday, Sept. 24, 2018, at 9:05 p.m. at Indiana University Health in Bloomington. She was born on Sept. 7, 1953, in Evansville to Ronald Lee Watson and Wanda Delores (Page) Watson. Ronda retired from NWSC Crane after 26 years and worked in HR, supply and night vision.

Survivors include her mother, Wanda Watson of Bedford; daughter, Jennifer Lee Kirk of Bedford; grandson, Logan M. Parks of Bedford; two sisters, Janis Watson and Tammie Boone, both of Bedford; two nephews, Joshua Boone and Derek Boone, both of Bedford; and great-niece, Brooklyn Boone of Bedford.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Ronda requested no public services; the family will have private graveside services at Cresthaven Memory Gardens.

Donations may be made to the White River Humane Society in Bedford.

Jay Douglas McFadden

Nov. 13, 1953 — Sept. 24, 2018

Jay Douglas McFadden, 64, of Bloomington, passed away on Monday, Sept. 24, 2018, at 2:45 p.m. at his residence. He was born in Lawrence County on Nov. 13, 1953, to Robert L. McFadden and Barbara M. (Brock) McFadden.

Jay was a 1971 graduate of Needmore High School. He retired from RCA in Bloomington and from Cook Medical in 2017 in Bloomington. Jay was a member of the Moose Lodge #90 in Bloomington and Bloomington Eagles for 30 years. He loved to golf, fish, follow NASCAR, IU and the Colts, and he bled Cubbie Blue.

Survivors include his mother, Barbara M. McFadden; sister, Terri L. McFadden; two nieces, Aimee and Sally; three nephews, Shane, David and Ben H.; four great nieces, Jordan, Allyson, Megan and Raven; three great nephews, Luke, Hunter and Thaddeus; great-great niece, Scarlette; great-great nephew, Liam; and his best friend, Bill.

Jay was preceded in death by his father, brother David B. McFadden and nephew Sean David McFadden.

Visitation will be on Saturday, Sept. 29, from 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. at Cresthaven Funeral Home. Cremation will follow and burial will be in Clover Hill Cemetery in Harrodsburg at a later date.

Roy J. Lamb, 83, of Bedford, died at 3:10 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2018, at St. Vincent Dunn Hospital.

Born July 30, 1935, in Brazil, Ind., he was the son of Roy F. and Thelma (Correll) Lamb. He married B. June Edwards on May 14, 1976, and she survives.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a draftsman, retiring from the Indiana Limestone Co. and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Bedford where he taught Sunday school.

Survivors include his wife, June, of Bedford; two sons, Troy Lamb and wife, Debbie, of Greenwood and Andy Batchelor and wife, Diana, of Bedford; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Alice Ann Long; brothers, Charles Lamb, Dennis Lamb, Robert Lamb and wife, Rita, and Steve Lamb; sisters-in-law, Helen Lewis and husband, Jim, Bertha Pfeiffer, Bonnie Slater, and Carol Edwards.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Linda Headley; a son, Philip Batchelor; sisters in-law, Hazel Beasley and Susan Lamb; and a brother in-law, Emory Edwards.

Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 28 at Green Hill Cemetery with Pastor Nathan Sundt officiating. Military rites will be accorded at the graveside by members of Gillen Post #33 American Legion. There will be a memorial service at the First Baptist Church at a later date.

Krista Dawn Fields, 44, passed away Friday, Sept. 21, 2018, at her residence.

Born March 4, 1974, in Bedford, she was the daughter of Barney and Carolyn S. (Blackburn) Goins. She married John Eric Fields Sept. 11, 2015. Her first marriage was to Charles Lee Cooper who preceded her in death Sept. 24, 2007.

Krista was a registered nurse and had been employed at Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

Survivors include her husband, John Eric Fields of Seymour; sons, Zachary Cooper of Mitchell and Landon Cooper of Bedford; stepdaughter, Makayla Rae Robrecht of Greenwood; parents, Barney and Carolyn Goins of Bedford; grandson, Wesley Cooper; father-in-law, Larry Fields of Bedford; brother-in-law, Stacey Fields of Bedford; sisters, Debra Goins of Bedford, Teresa Haase of Mitchell, and Shannon (Jim) Roach of Mitchell; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and great nieces and nephews.

Salmon, 86, of Bedford, passed away on Friday, Sept. 21, 2018 at White River Lodge. Born June 14, 1932, in Monroe County, she was the daughter of Raymond and Thelma (Rush) Newton. She married Freddie T. Salmon on Dec. 19, 1952; and he preceded her in death on March 7, 2012. Mary was a graduate of Bloomington High School. She retired from RCA and later retired from NWSC Crane. She was a member of Southland Church of Christ and the Red Hat Society. Mary loved spending time with her family and cooking. Thomas David Turpin Aug. 6, 1943—Sept. 22, 2018 Thomas David “Tom” Turpin, of rural Heltonville, joined his heavenly Father on Saturday, Sept. 22, 2018 at IU Health Bloomington Hospital surrounded by his family and ministry friends. Born on Aug. 6, 1943 the son of Balford and Emma (Garrison) Turpin. He married Brenda (Eads) Turpin on Oct. 23, 1964 and she survives. Tom retired from General Electric (Bloomington In. Plant) as a skilled trade worker after 33 years of service. Tom also had a great passion for the gospel ministry, he so much enjoyed for the past 15 years. Tom was also noted in his community as an avid fisherman and his great love for the outdoors. September 20, 2018 Harrell Morrison Aug. 30, 1918 — Sept. 17, 2018 Harrell Morrison, 100, of Norman, passed away on Monday, Sept. 17, 2018. He was born Aug. 30, 1918, the son of the late Hugh Montgomery and Josie Baker Morrison. Harrell married his wife of 76 years, Inez Avanell Henderson on Sept. 28, 1940, and she preceded him in death on Nov. 3, 2016. Harrell lived 97 years on the same farm on which he was born. He graduated from Heltonville High School in 1937 and served in the United States Navy in the South Pacific during World War II. He was at both the battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. He worked as a welder for many years at Brunner Engineering in Bedford, was a farmer, owned sawmills and did custom farming. For 58 years, Harrell and his wife lovingly cared for their son, Jerry, who was an invalid from birth. Jerry has spent the last 20 years at Hoosier Christian village where his mother and father continued to visit and help care for him. Born Oct. 11, 1932, in Tipton, he was the son of Otto and Geneva (Illeges) Gaiser. He married Sally S. Eckstein Dec. 26, 1954. John was an electrical engineer and retired from Motorola and also Swiss Colonies. He enjoyed camping and traveling and was a member of NOMADS. John was a member of Jacob Finger United Methodist Church. John was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korea-Alaska era. Survivors include his wife, Sally S. Yates, 88, of Bedford, passed away at Bloomington Hospital on Sunday, Sept. 16, 2018, after a brief illness. Born June 20, 1930, in Findlay, Ohio, and grew up in Sullivan, Illinois, attending Blackburn College and the University of Illinois before entering the U.S. Army in 1952, where he was a combat engineer in the Korean War. Following military service, he enrolled at Eastern Illinois University where he earned a bachelor of science degree in botany. He was awarded a fellowship for graduate study at IU, earning a master of arts degree, then teaching at the University of the Cumberlands in Tennessee and Ball State University in Indiana. Yates received his PhD in Botany from IU before joining the faculty of Butler University in Indianapolis, teaching courses in genetics, botany, systematics and physiology for 30 years as well as being curator of the 120,000 plant specimens in the Friesner Herbarium. He was elected a Fellow of the Indiana Academy of Science, and held memberships in the Botanical Society of America, the International Association for Plant Tissue Culture, the In Vitro Society, the American Genetic Association, the American Society of Plant Taxonomists, the Plant Molecular Biology Association, and was elected to honoraries, the Society of Sigma Xi and the Research Society of America. He is credited as the first to clone the gingko tree even while maintaining a full teaching schedule. He was happy to share his knowledge with all ages and defend his creation of the black sunflower, the test tube gingko tree and the red eggplant, beautiful in color but perhaps lacking in taste. In retirement, he was active in community service as an adult reading tutor, and interested in tree farming, astronomy and rock collecting. He was a member of the Bedford First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and was a former elder. He was preceded in death by his parents, Pearl and Willard Yates of Strasburg, Illinois; a brother Berwyn Yates of Shelbyville Illinois, and one sister, Sarah Imber, of Denver, Colorado. Survivors include his wife, Mary Ruth (Hartman) Yates; sons, Dr. Charles W. Yates (Julie) of Zionsville, Jonathan F Yates J.D. (Mandy) of Bloomington; five grandchildren; six nephews; one uncle, James Yates, of Sullivan, Illinois and six cousins in Ohio. Eva (Frye) Covey Jan. 28, 1921 — Sept. 16, 2018 Eva Covey, 97, of Bedford, went home to be with her Lord at 10:50 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 16, 2018. Born Jan. 28, 1921, in Monroe County, she was the daughter of Elisha and Sereptha (Butcher) Frye. She married William C. “Buster” Covey on March 11, 1939, and he preceded her in death. She was a homemaker and attended Hilltop Pentecostal Church and Gulletts Creek Baptist Church. Survivors include three daughters, Nelda Jean Crider and Betty Jo (Gary) Henderson, both of Bedford, and Judith K. Yates, 88, of Bedford, passed away at Bloomington Hospital on Sunday, Sept. 16, 2018, after a brief illness. Born June 20, 1930, in Findlay, Ohio, and grew up in Sullivan, Illinois, attending Blackburn College and the University of Illinois before entering the U.S. Army in 1952, where he was a combat engineer in the Korean War. Following military service, he enrolled at Eastern Illinois University where he earned a bachelor of science degree in botany. He was awarded a fellowship for graduate study at IU, earning a master of arts degree, then teaching at the University of the Cumberlands in Tennessee and Ball State University in Indiana. Yates received his PhD in Botany from IU before joining the faculty of Butler University in Indianapolis, teaching courses in genetics, botany, systematics and physiology for 30 years as well as being curator of the 120,000 plant specimens in the Friesner Herbarium. He was elected a Fellow of the Indiana Academy of Science, and held memberships in the Botanical Society of America, the International Association for Plant Tissue Culture, the In Vitro Society, the American Genetic Association, the American Society of Plant Taxonomists, the Plant Molecular Biology Association, and was elected to honoraries, the Society of Sigma Xi and the Research Society of America. He is credited as the first to clone the gingko tree even while maintaining a full teaching schedule. He was happy to share his knowledge with all ages and defend his creation of the black sunflower, the test tube gingko tree and the red eggplant, beautiful in color but perhaps lacking in taste. In retirement, he was active in community service as an adult reading tutor, and interested in tree farming, astronomy and rock collecting. He was a member of the Bedford First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and was a former elder. He was preceded in death by his parents, Pearl and Willard Yates of Strasburg, Illinois; a brother Berwyn Yates of Shelbyville Illinois, and one sister, Sarah Imber, of Denver, Colorado. Rozella 'Rosie' (Sears) Ritchison Sept. 2, 1952 — Sept. 13, 2018 Rozella "Rosie" Ritchison, 66, of Seymour, died on Thursday, Sept. 13, 2018. Rosie was born Rozella Mae Sears on Sept. 2, 1952, in Bedford. She graduated from Bedford High School in 1970. She worked for the GM Powertrain foundry in Bedford, retiring after almost 37 years of service. During her time there, she was active in the United Auto Workers union where she served as Recording Secretary, Vice President and President. She was also proud to be the first female, journeyman die-maker employed by the foundry division General Motors. Rosie was an avid adventurer, hiking in the Andes, Himalayas and on the Great Wall of China. She visited the pyramids at Giza, the Sphinx, Valley of the Kings and other historical Egyptian sites. She visited the Galapagos Islands to see the giant turtles, swimming iguana and other unique wildlife and also to scuba dive there. As a certified diver, she took her adventures underwater, diving in the Bahamas, Belize, Bonaire, Caymans, Fiji, and the Red Sea. She fell in love with the people and culture in Bali, visiting multiple times. Rosie made the move from Bedford to Seymour in order to be closer to her son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren during retirement. She enjoyed splashing in the pool with the kids and playing Nintendo video games with them. She enjoyed reading, watching Game of Thrones and the Walking Dead, crime dramas, and crocheting. She was also a huge Harry Potter fan. Rosie is survived by her son, Michael "Keith" Collins and wife, Angela; grandchildren, Ryan and Ashley,; brothers, Mike and Jeff Sears; and sister, Patti. She was preceded in death by her parents, Merlin L. and Irma (Williams) Sears; and brother Tim. Charles Bowden Adamson March 25, 1930 — Sept. 10, 2018 Charles Bowden Adamson, 88, passed away Monday, Sept. 10, 2018, at 4:53 p.m. at his home in Bartlettsville. Born March 25, 1930, in Judah, he was the son of Opal and Mary Emeline (McPike) Adamson. He married Delema Joyce Clark on March 23, 1951. Charles was a member of the Bartlettsville Christian Church and the Heltonville Area Veterans. He served in the Army as an ambulance driver and medic. He worked many years in the limestone quarries of Lawrence and Monroe Counties, and retired from Westinghouse. Charles was also a farmer, and he and his dad built their home on the family farm in Bartlettsville. Charles loved road trips and had traveled through every state, except Alaska, as well as Canada. He was always outdoors enjoying fishing, hunting, searching for morels, and working in timber. Charles looked forward to playing euchre with his retired Westinghouse buddies and friends every month. September 05, 2018 Christopher James Morthland July 30, 2018 Christopher James Morthland, aka CJ Watson, age 53, passed away on July 30, 2018 in Nashville, Tennessee. CJ is survived by his fiance, Kristen Orr; parents, Dave Morthland (Angie), Sherry Smith Butcher (Danny); brother, Aaron Butcher (Amanda); stepsisters, Maggie Finley and Dorothy Timan; biological father, Frank Watson (Barb); Kristen’s family; the young artists that he mentored; and many co-writers and friends that he deeply treasured and loved to cook for. CJ graduated from BNL in 1983. He was active in music and Scarlett and Purple. He performed at Little Theatre of Bedford in the “Closer Walk With Patsy Cline,” “Country Legends” and “Good Vibrations” musicals. He also released his album “Menacing Grace” at LTB in 2001. CJ was a Kerrville Award Winning Songwriter who worked with great artists, such as Gretchen Wilson, James Otto and Lisa Shaffer, to name a few. In 2016 he won “Best Original Song” for VooDoo (co-written with Bruce Michael Miller) at the Los Angeles Independent Film Festival Awards. This song also earned CJ a “Best Original Song” Oscar nomination. CJ had songs featured in the “Rockband” video game and authored the bestselling “Everything Songwriting Book.” He was a fixture at the renowned Frank Brown Songwriting Festival for many years, where he hosted industry panels, educational workshops and provided music education opportunities to rising young music students. CJ played at the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville for over 25 years and was loved by all in attendance. CJ Watson was a singer, songwriter, producer, guitarist, coach, mentor and so much more. She was born July 5, 1926 in Mitchell, the daughter of Howard and Jane (Gilliatt) Tegarden. She married John W. Lindley on Nov. 2, 1947, and he preceded her in death in 1997. Alongside John, she owned and operated Quality Market, Lindley’s IGA before retirement. She was a homemaker and also manager of the Orange County License Branch for over 20 years. She was a member of the Orleans Christian Church and Orleans Phi Beta Psi. In her younger years she was an avid bridge player and a Rosie Riveter welder of LST boats during World War II. She is survived by her three children, Candy (Steve) Lantis, John Howard (Bobette) Lindley, both of Orleans, and Michael Tegarden Lindley of Martinsville; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and one brother, James H. Tegarden of Lakeway, Texas. Lois Marie (Melvin) Root June 22, 1923 — Sept. 2, 2018 Lois Marie Root, 95, passed away Sunday, Sept. 2, 2018, at Paoli Health and Living Community. Born June 22, 1923, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Jesse and Celia (Routh) Melvin. She married Eugene Slaughter and he preceded her in death March 17, 1982. Her second husband, Perry Kendall, preceded her in death March 5, 1997, and her third husband, Lee Root, preceded her in death Oct. 8, 2011. Lois had been employed at Trav-Ler Radio Corporation. She graduated from Mitchell High School in 1942 and was a member of Liberty Baptist Church and attended Orleans First Baptist Church. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, and making dresses for her granddaughters. Lois was a great baker and loved gardening and yard work. She enjoyed spending time with family and riding in Kara Jean’s jeep to get milkshakes, out to eat, shopping, and getting manicures and pedicures. Erwin Sept. 9, 1945 — Aug. 27, 2018 David Douglas Erwin, 72, passed away on Aug. 27, 2018, from natural causes after years battling diabetes. Born in Vincennes, to Claude Winford and Irma Helen Erwin. David spent his childhood in Lawrence County. He developed a passion for everything sports, especially the St. Louis Cardinals, as a result of listening to their games on the radio with his parents for years. He became a lifelong fan and overall sports enthusiast. He was a 1963 graduate of Needmore High School and went on to play first base for Indiana University baseball, but after injury transferred to Indiana State, where he graduated with a teaching degree in 1968. He went on to pursue his love of coaching as both a math teacher and coach for schools in Casey, Illinois, Bartow, Florida, Bedford (BNL) and on to finish his career in Indianapolis at Lawrence North. At Lawrence North, David helped the school capture numerous state championships. Those included basketball in 1989 and multiple track and field championships. Through his teaching and coaching, David was able to help guide and shape the lives of numerous young men and women, helping influence them on who and what they’d become later in life. As an avid, some may say rabid, sports fan, David continued to follow sports throughout his life. He especially loved watching his 14 grandchildren play sports. He was able to see his Cardinals, in person, grab a World Series title. David was also a big fan of everything IU as well as a huge Indianapolis Colts fan, catching them win a Super Bowl title over the Bears. He loved collecting sports memorabilia, traveling and sampling restaurants across the country. David is survived and will be missed by many. These include, but are not limited to, daughters, Jacquie Berry-Schroedle (Pete) and Kahla Grace (Ryan) of Fishers; prior wives, Cheri McDaniel Calvert and Linda Donlan Erwin of Fishers; sister and brother-in-law, Kathryn and Merlin Root of Bedford; brother and sister-in-law Robert and Brenda Erwin of Bloomington; stepchildren Kasey Shade (Matt), Tom McConnell (Sarah) and Kristy McConnell; grandchildren, Carter, Hayden, Quincy, Cooper, Harper, Turner, Jack, Ashlynn, Lila, Macie, Tommy, Adam, Brandon and Christina; nieces Tonya Rensi (Ed), Kamila Binkley (Craig), and Andrea Erwin; and his nephew Eric Erwin. David also had a nephew, Brian Root, who preceded his passing. David spent his last three years living in Virginia with his significant other, Peggy Kirkman, who was his caretaker until the end. September 02, 2018 Harold Wayne Todd Jan. 22, 1951 — Aug. 29, 2018 Harold Wayne Todd, of Ellettsville, passed away at Bloomington Hospice House on Wednesday, August 29, 2018. He was 67. Born in Bedford, Indiana, on January 22, 1951, he was one of 15 children born to Logan and Izolla (Hawkins) Todd. Wayne was married to Cheryl Ann Todd, who passed on May 17, 2017. He worked at RCA and GE in assembly. Wayne proudly served in the Indiana National Guard for nearly 22 years as a Sergeant. He was an avid sports fan, and always watched his grandchildren play in their sports team. Wayne enjoyed competing in horseshoes, corn hole, golfing and playing pool. He mushroom and ginseng hunted until his health didn’t allow him to continue. Wayne loved his family, and made it a point to deliver doughnuts and sweet tea every weekend to his grandchildren. He was a member of the Bloomington Moose Lodge #1081 and the Bloomington Eagles Lodge #1085. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Cheryl Ann; and six brothers and five sisters. Born Sept. 15, 1933, in Troy, he was the son of Elmer and Celeste (Whittmer) Masterson. He married Sue Hubbs on July 31, 1954, and she survives.
