He was born April 17, 1934, in Mitchell, IN, to the late Otha and Louise (Logan) Fletcher. David was a 1952 graduate of Mitchell High School, lettering in basketball, baseball and track. He received his bachelor’s degree from the Indiana University School of Business in 1956, where he was also a member of Delta Upsilon fraternity and the Marching Hundred. David proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force, and married his childhood sweetheart, Joan Ramey. He was employed with Indiana Bell/Ameritech for 36 years, retiring in 1991. David was a proud IU fan and was a season ticketholder for over 60 years in both football and basketball. Most of all, David cherished his wife, children, and grandchildren, passionately supporting all of their endeavors. He is their number one fan. Gerald has been a long-time member at Mundell Christian Church. Over the years, Gerald has served as an elder, deacon, superintendent, treasurer and trustee. Gerald was an accomplished high school athlete and lifelong fan of all types of sports. He loved to watch his children and grandchildren and all their activities, but especially watching them play basketball. Gerald was a lifelong farmer and enjoyed the farming life. Robert S. “Bob” Clendening, age 79, the Pastor of Grace Fellowship Assembly of God Church in Bloomington, went home to be with the Lord Friday evening at his residence after a long illness. Robert was ordained at Clear Creek Christian Church in 1977 and was a licensed minister with the Assembly of God Churches. He served in the Army National Guard (Battery A, 2nd Battalion, 150th Artillery) for six years. Alan Gene Yocom, 62, of Avoca, passed away on May 22, 2018 in Bedford.
Born in Greencastle, March 9, 1956, Alan was raised by the Rev. W.J. Yocom Sr. and Vera Mae (Follett) Yocom. He married Margaret Ann Verbais of Springfield, Illinois, in 1978, and the couple had four children.
In 1986, the family moved to Colorado, where Alan worked for AT&T until an on-the-job injury resulted in a permanent disability. In 2006, Alan relocated to his home state of Indiana.
An avid animal lover, Alan could never turn away an animal in need, including many dogs (specifically Norwegian elkhounds), cats, rabbits, birds, hamsters, and even mice throughout his 62 years of life. He could often be found sitting in a favorite outdoor spot, listening to music and watching the stars, trying to pinpoint particular planets and constellations.
His friends and family will miss his sense of humor and whimsy, both of which always seemed to be in full supply.
Alan is survived by his children, Sarah Rumple of Denver, Colorado, Kate Yocom (Joe Vignali) of Springfield, Illinois, Emily Yocom (Michael Peake) of Denver, Colorado and Matthew Yocom of Avoca; his grandchildren, Henry Rumple and Brooklyn Vignali; a sister, Susan L. Grubb; and multiple nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Wilbur and Vera; and three siblings, Marilyn, Kay and Joe.
An informal gathering to celebrate Alan’s life will be held at one of his favorite restaurants, Mother Bear’s Pizza Campus (1428 E. 3rd St., Bloomington, Indiana), from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 26.

Born July 7, 1930, in Carthage, Missouri, he was the son of Bill and Opal (McGuire) Rowe. He married Virginia Rose Alexander Sept. 2, 1958, and she preceded him in death July 9, 2012.
Jack was an evangelist throughout the world for 44 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include his daughter, Shirley Mitchell of Augusta, Georgia; son, Darryl Rowe of Campbellsburg; and three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

June was a member of Mount Pleasant Christian Church and was previously employed by the Sears & Roebuck catalog store and later the Bedford National Bank. June’s family was her life! She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She provided support, life lessons and loving inspired compassion to all. Le never stopped learning and was still engineering this winter in Florida. He converted a Trailways bus into a motorhome after his retirement. Le had a deep faith and witnessed by example. He was affiliated with the Church of God of Anderson, and most recently attended Donica Church of God. He loved to travel, bird hunt, fish, play cards with family and friends. Vacationing with family was very important to him, especially annual trips to Michigan and Florida. Visiting every state in the US, he especially loved Florida, Alaska, and Colorado. He was an avid Red Sox fan. He loved being “Pop” to his grandchildren. Born March 29, 1937, in Lawrence County, Indiana, he was the son of Ray and Wilma (Sneed) Crane. He was a graduate of Tunnelton High School with the Class of 1955. Leland retired after 22 years in the United States Navy, stationed in Florida twice, Norfolk, Virginia, Hawaii twice, Azores, Morocco, and at the time of retirement he was working at the Pentagon, for the second time. He also served on the USS Rooks, in Cuba. He retired from Crane after 20 years. Leland also owned All Star Cards and Crane’s Greenhouse in Bedford. Larence Franklin ‘Bud’ Kirkman Dec. 20, 1936 — May 6, 2018 Larence Franklin “Bud” Kirkman, 81, of Springville, passed away at IU Health Bloomington Hospital on Sunday, May 6, 2018. Born Dec. 20, 1936, in Avoca, he was the son of Orville and Annetta (England) Kirkman. He married Patricia Duncan on July 19, 1957, and she survives. He was a member of the Avoca Baptist Church and the White River Bow Hunters Archery Club. He worked for Ingalls Stone Company before being drafted into the Army where he was a armored personnel carrier driver and coached and played basketball in Germany. When he returned from Germany, he went to work for the Westinghouse Corp. and Asa Brown Bovari (ABB) in Bloomington as a plater and fork lift operator. He retired after 33 years. Bud was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing with his sons, grandsons, brothers, and wife. He also enjoyed hunting with his family and shooting archery with friends and family. He established the Westinghouse Archery Club and served as its president for five years. While his sons were young, he coached basketball and football at the Bedford Boys Club. He was also a volunteer biddy basketball coach at the Needmore Elementary School. Bud is survived by his wife, Patty; two sons, Steven L Kirkman (Kathleen) and Jonathan P. Patsy JoAnn (Jenkins) Benson July 1, 1936 — April 30, 2017 Patsy JoAnn (Jenkins) Wiley Benson was officially given her wings and title of Guardian Angel on April 30, 2018. She was born July 1, 1936, in Bedford, to Walter Jenkins and Mary Jo Dalton. She was the fourth of 14 children born to Mary Jo. She married Kermit Wiley in Wabash in 1953 before he left for the Korean War. They were married for 19 years. She married Ronald Benson in 1972. Ronald preceded her in death in 2002, which was a real surprise since she hadn’t yet given him permission. She is survived by her children, Mary (Tim) McDonald of Lincoln City Oregon, Marcia (Kevin) Wiley-Murphy of Sacramento California, and Audie (Joyce) Wiley of Concord, California; five grandchildren, Chas Stumbo, Isabel Beard, Joshua Wiley, Jeremy Wiley and Shane Wiley; nine great-grandkids; and three great-great-grandkids, Caiden, Sophie and Evalynn. She is also survived by eight sisters, Jeanie Judah, Jackie Short, Laura Thomas, Beverly Chain, Rosie McDonald, Sandra Nordhoff, Jo Ellen Sutton and Linda Randolph and two brothers, Michael and Christopher Gilbert. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Georganna Jenkins and Jane Gilbert; and one brother Steve Gilbert. She lived in Wabash from 1950-1962, Urbana, 1962-1972, Wabash again 1972-1979. She moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1979 and to Lincoln City, Oregon, on the ocean, in 1996. During her life, she worked at Wagners, Magnetics, General Tire, had her own hair & wig salon, owned an auction business, worked in several casinos in Las Vegas, and did home health care in Oregon. She was well known for many reasons, biggest being her kind and generous heart. She loved to sew and made hundreds of baby quilts. She gave them all away. Someone would be walking by with a child, and she would run out and give them one of her quilts. She donated many to charities. She touched hundreds of lives with her quilts and would not have it any other way. She was known for her colorful eyeglasses. She had a pair of glasses for every different color outfit in her closet. She loved everyone, but liking you could change from one minute to the next. She enjoyed life to the fullest and was a wonderful jokester. She loved to take her kids and their friends to line up cans across the highway then hide in the ditch when the cars hit them. She loved a good gay rights rally and could be found chanting “2-4-6-8, how do you know your kids are straight.” Around Lincoln City, she was known as the little old lady driving the big red truck. She was the glue that held her very large family together. She was the boss, the family knew it and let her rule. Nothing made her happier than a family reunion. You could always find her at the center of the action, dancing, singing and making sure that everyone got the door prize that they really wanted. We have no doubt that she is in heaven bossing everyone around and making sure heaven has a nice porch, a swing set, a fort and maybe a slide. She is free of the confines of her physical body, and her soul is soaring. Her last request was that everyone know “she knew better and did it anyway”. Charles Melvin Horton Jan. 24, 1937 — April 30, 2018 Charles Melvin Horton, 81, of Norman, passed away on April 30, 2018, surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Horton was a member of Mundell Christian Church, Heltonville. He received his Master’s Degree in Math and Graphics from Indiana University and began teaching at Seymour High School in 1963, where he taught for 16 years. During the summer months each year of his teaching career, Mr. Horton constructed homes. He was also a farmer, raised beef cattle and was a member of the Jackson County Cattlemen’s Association and Indiana Farm Bureau. Mr. Horton was a happy person who enjoyed working and helping others. Born on Jan. 24, 1937, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Campbell and Delcie Cummings Horton, both of whom preceded him in death. On July 21, 1960, in Bedford, he married Josephine Eggers and she survives in Norman. May 01, 2018 Janet Stewart May 11, 1939 — April 29, 2018 Janet Carol Stewart, 78, of Bedford, died at 1:05 p.m. on Sunday, April 29, 2018, at Springs Valley Meadows in French Lick. Born May 11, 1939, in Lexington, Virginia, she was the daughter of Paul Houston and Margaret Marie Smith and Ila Gertrude Hickman, birth mother. She married Norman James Lindley Jr., on March 30, 1956, and with this union five children were born. She next married William “Willie” Edward Owens, on Feb. 25, 1978, and he preceded her in death. She next married Robert Dale “Bobby” Stewart, on Aug. 20, 1988, and he preceded her in death. Janet worked as a CNA at the Hospitality House in Bedford and as a volunteer and Nurse’s Tech at Bedford Regional Medical Center in Bedford. The majority of her life was spent as a homemaker and raising her five children. Her unwaivering dedication and love for taking care of her fourth child Tammy, who suffered from Muscular Dystrophy, was the priority of her life. Her life with her second husband Willie included camping, fishing and enjoying family time at their farm at Sullivan Cave in Springville. Her love and devotion to him as he battled cancer was yet another example of her great devotion to care for others. Her life with her third husband Bobby was spent camping and enjoying their retirement years at their home in Bedford by their pond with their dogs Muffin and Molly. She was a member of the Fayetteville Baptist Church in Bedford. Survivors include three daughters, Theresa Gately Basinger of Ankeny, Iowa, Hope Elaine (Mark) Lindsey of French Lick and Paula Kay Lindley (Mark) Butler of Bedford; one son Mark Alan (Teresa) Lindley of Orleans; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and numerous step children. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Carl Muterspaw and Paul Muterspaw Jr. of Virginia; her husbands; and her daughter, Tammy Sue Lindley. Funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 3, at Ochs-Tetrick Funeral Home in Orleans with Pastor Ken Walden officiating. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Wednesday and from 10 a.m. until the service on Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Springville Cemetery West in Springville. Elliott, age 91, of Washington, passed away on Monday, April 30, 2018, at 3:28 a.m. at Hillside Manor Nursing Home. He was born on Aug. 1, 1926, in Oolitic to Lacy and Inez May (Allison) Elliott. He graduated from Oolitic High School in 1944, and was a U.S. Army Veteran serving in World War II. His work career included sales positions for Donaldson Bread, which lead him to the Washington area in 1959, then Chesty Potato Chips for ten years. From there he was hired to manage the first Kentucky Fried Chicken in Washington and in 1979 he started a night management position at Hersh’s IGA where he had retired. He was a member of Grace Baptist Church and the VFW. He is survived by his wife, Mary Cheek, whom he married Sept. 19, 1947; three sons, Brent Elliott of Washington, Jay Elliott of Arnold, Missouri and Matt Elliott of Washington; sisters, Peggy White of Fayettville and Carol Clark of Bedford; seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Ruth Ann King, Joy White, Mildred Kessinger and Nita Pruett; and a brother, Don Elliott. Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. on Wednesday at Ed Lee Mortuary. Entombment will be in the Sugarland Memory Garden Mausoleum.
