Obituaries — March 2018 March 31, 2018 Albert William Cross, Sr. Jun. 25, 1931 — Mar. 29, 2018 Albert William Cross Sr., 86, of Springville, died at 11:58 a.m. on Thursday, March 29, 2018, at Owen Valley Health Campus in Spencer. Born June 25, 1931, in Bloomington, he was the son of Albert Henry and Kathryn (Stogdill) Cross. He married Thelma Chambers on Nov. 23, 1955, and she survives. He graduated from Indiana University with a B.S. degree in education in 1957. He was a teacher first in North Judson, and later, Springville where he was a principal. He then taught in Orleans and lastly, at Mitchell. He retired from teaching in 1965 and started working at Crane Naval Base in 1966. He was a veteran of the Korean War. He was a playwright and songwriter. He and Thelma were founding members of Little Theatre of Bedford. An avid musician, he could play many stringed instruments with a focus on classical guitar, bluegrass, and gospel. As a farmer, he was a Minneapolis Moline tractor collector and he introduced Scotch Highland cattle and Angora goats to Lawrence County. Survivors include his wife, Thelma of Springville; nine children, Albert W. Cross Jr. and wife, Roxie of Springville, Rowena Cross-Najafi and husband Reza of Bedford, Deanna Rieber and husband Dan of New York City, Gary Cross of Mabel, Minnesota, Jessica Lamker of Savage, Minnesota, Kylena Cross and wife Julia Nation, of Frederick, Maryland, Priscilla Griggs and husband Clarence of Rogers, Texas, Doran Cross and wife Tricia of Providence Village, Texas, and Mytyl Hutchinson and husband Christian of Derwood, Maryland; 17 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; five sisters, Dorothy Lutes and husband Bill of Pikes Peak, Rose Hatton and husband Don of Freetown, Beverly Blankenfeld, Alberta McConnell and husband Larry, all of Bloomington and Linda Lane of California; two brothers, Frederick Cross and wife Ginger of Georgia and Rodney Cross and wife Janet of Orleans; sister-in-law, Carol Cross of Bloomington; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Robert, brother, Gary Dean Cross (in infancy); and a brother-in-law, Richard Blankenfeld. (Johnson) Sykes Oct. 2, 1928 — March 25, 2018 Mildred J. (Johnson) Sykes, 89, of Bedford, passed away on Sunday, March 25, 2018, at IU Health Bloomington Hospital. Born Oct. 2, 1928, in Roane County, Tennessee, she was the daughter of William Charles and Agnes Johnson. She married Chester Sykes; and he preceded her in death in 1993. She was a homemaker. Mildred loved quilting and cooking. Surviving are children, Wanda Stewart, Betty (Larry) Kern, Lester Treece, Carrie Spires, Dallas Wayne (Betty) Sykes, Shirley (Andy) Nelson, Donna Richardson, Faye Spicer and James D. Sykes; 25 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one daughter, Pamela Sykes; granddaughter; four brothers; and two sisters. Phyllis Ann (Bowden) Bechner March 20, 2018 Phyllis Ann (Bowden) Bechner, 84, Indianapolis, died on March 20. She was a member of Fairview Community Church and had operated Luv & Hugs Canine Training. She also had worked for Bedford Veterinary Service. She is remembered as a well-loved person who loved animals and did charity work. Survivors include two sons, Steve Bishop of Florida and Aaron Bechner of Bedford; and one sister, Brenda Lawson of Indianapolis. Cremation was chosen. Hackney Dec. 1, 1930 — March 25, 2018 Marvin N. Hackney, 87, Bedford, passed away Sunday, March 25, 2018, surrounded by his loved ones. Born Dec. 1, 1930, in Bedford, he was the son of Noble and Frances (Stultz) Hackney. He married Yolanda “YO YO” Flores in August of 1957; and she passed away Aug. 27, 2005. He later married Patricia Reynolds in 2009, and she survives. Marvin was a graduate of Fayetteville High School and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was self-employed as a cabinet builder and attended Englewood Baptist Church. Marvin was an avid fisherman and loved the outdoors. He is survived by two daughters, Tonia (Larry) Hitchcox of Bedford, and Vanessa (Randy) Arthur of Mitchell; son, Noble Hackney of Bedford; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Yolanda; son, Travis Hackney; grandsons, Erick Luttrell and Nathan Hackney; two brothers, Conrad and John; and three sisters, Jewell, Kathleen and Dora. Margaret Sue (Pridemore) King Aug. 16, 1935 — March 25, 2018 Margaret Sue King, 82, passed away Sunday, March 25, 2018, at her residence. She had been on kidney dialysis for almost 15 years. Born Aug. 16, 1935, in Martin County, she was the daughter of Stephen Linza and Hazel Della (Montre) Pridemore. She married Phillip Eugene King Jan. 9, 1954, and he preceded her in death Feb. 10, 2018. Margaret was a homemaker. She was a member of the Huron WTK Club, and a graduate of Shoals High School in 1953. Her grandbabies were her life. Survivors include her children, Carroll (Peggy) King of Spartanburg, S.C., Marlene (Dave) Sanders of Huron, Delema (David) Moffatt of Huron, Dennis (Teresa) King of Huron, and Marvin Scott (Sandy) King of Huron; 13 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren; and sister, Helen (Luther, Jr.) Shipman of French Lick. Foddrill, 84, of Bedford, passed away on Thursday, March 22, 2018, at Garden Villa in Bedford. He was born in Lawrence County on Oct. 10, 1933, to Clifford Arnold Foddrill and Betty (Wilson) Foddrill. Samuel married Shirley Neeley in Ohio and she survives. He was retired union carpenter and worked at Weddle Bros. Construction in Bloomington. He attended Bethel Community Church in Oolitic. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Survivors include his wife, Shirley Foddrill of Bedford; two sons, Joe Foddrill of Orleans and Mark (Marco) Foddrill and wife Tracey Foddrill of Bedford; one sister, Becky Ryan of Oolitic; two brothers, Jack (Catherine) Foddrill of Bedford and Larry (Rita) Foddrill of Chapel Hill; grandchildren, Tosha Charles, Nevin Foddrill, Andrew Foddrill, Allen Foddrill, Avery Foddrill, Sadie Foddrill and Ashley Cook; and great-grandchildren, Brantley Charles and Wade Smell. He was born in Martinsville on June 20, 1963, to William and Laura (Trusty) Cramer. David attended Central Elementary and East Middle schools, both in Martinsville, Oolitic Middle School, and then went on to attend Charity Chapel Christian Academy. David was a longtime resident of Lyons Nursing home and later was a resident of Garden Villa in Bedford. David enjoyed playing bingo, completing word search puzzles; he enjoyed the Red Hat Society at Garden Villa and loved to make others laugh. He was very devoted to his family, and enjoyed spending time with those he loved. Survivors include his father and stepmother, William E. and Sally Cramer of Bedford; brothers, Paul Cramer and William M. Carter Hawkins Canada Larry Eugene Canada, Jr., age 76, originally of Bloomington, IN, passed away March 15, 2018, in Maple Grove, MN. Carter was a loving father, grandfather, uncle and friend to many. Carter was driven by his passions and committed himself to his visionary view of the world. Mildred Brice Jan. 4, 1926 — March 22, 2018 Mildred L. Brice, 92, of Orleans, passed away at 5:35 p.m. on March 22, 2018, at Stonebridge Health Campus in Bedford, IN. She was born January 4, 1926, in Surgoinsville, TN, the daughter of Tom and Hazel (Wetzel) Bean. She married Albert Brice on August 3, 1942, and he preceded her in death on April 6, 1998. She was a member of Syria Christian Church. She was a homemaker. She is survived by three sons, James (Judy) Brice of Fort Worth, TX, Dan (Kim) Brice of Louisville, KY, and Donald Brice of Bloomington, IN; one brother, James Bean of Annandale, VA; six grandchildren, Crissa Hubert, Robert Brice, Jennifer Goselin, Angela Smith, Jason Brice and Hunter Brice; nine great-grandchildren, Grant Randolph, Evan Randolph, Christian Brice, Boston Brice, Cole Smith, McKinley Smith, Brooklyn Goselin, Morgan Goselin and Amelia Brice. March 23, 2018 Stephen Dennis Goen June 12, 1940 — March 21, 2018 Stephen Dennis Goen, 77, of Bedford, passed away Wednesday, March 21, 2018, at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis. He was born June 12, 1940, in Sparksville, the son of the late Everett and Agnes Maggie Goen. He enjoyed outdoor activities, watching hummingbirds and coloring books. He retired from Otis Elevator in Bloomington after several years of being a machinist. He is survived by daughters, Bonita (Larry) McPherson and Sarah (Jason) Hassler; sons, Monte Goen and Johnny Goen; six grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; brothers, Richard (Karen) Goen and Joe (Glenda) Goen; and sister, Patty (Marvin) Reynolds. March 22, 2018 Geneva (Stevens) Lemmons Feb. 4, 1933 — March 19, 2018 Geneva Lemmons, 85, of Bedford, died at 8:05 p.m. on Monday, March 19, 2018, at StoneBridge Health Campus. Born Feb. 4, 1933, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Charles N. and Martha Ellen (Childers) Stevens. She married Harold K. “Duke” Taylor in 1949 and he preceded her in death in 1957. She later married Robert E. Lemmons in 1972 and he preceded her in death in 1974. She was a homemaker and member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Bedford Eagles Lodge Aerie No. 654. Survivors include a son, Steven Taylor of Bedford; a daughter, Linda Chapman of Davenport, Florida; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Rogowski July 20, 1958 — March 20, 2018 Frank M. Rogowski, 59, of Bedford, passed away at 2:47 a.m. on Tuesday, March 20, 2018, at his residence. Born July 20, 1958, in Chicago, Illinois, he was the son of Steve and Virginia Rogowski. Frank graduated from BNL High School and worked at Indiana University until his passing. He was of Catholic faith. He is survived by his longtime companion, Deanna Rollins of Bedford; stepdaughter, April Rollins of Ames, Iowa; sister, Ruth Dube of Bloomington; two nieces, Mackenzie Lloyd of Chicago, Illinois, and Stephanie McCrea of Bloomington; along with his Tuesday and Thursday buddies from Bandana’s. March 21, 2018 Wanda Marie ‘Rita’ Busch July 10, 1947 — March 18, 2018 Wanda Marie “Rita” Busch, 70, of Bedford, passed away on Sunday, March 18, 2018, at her residence, surrounded by her family. Born July 10, 1947, in Bedford, she was the daughter of Noble and Charlotte (Goens) Harrison. Rita married Mike Busch on Nov. 6, 1965; and he survives. She attended Bedford High School and worked at various factories. Rita was a member of Bedford Baptist Temple. She is survived by her husband, Mike; children, Tom (Mindy) Busch, Steve Busch and Charlotte Blackburn; grandchildren, Kayla (Matt) Wagner, Michael Busch, Karly (fiancé Justin Chambers) Busch, Thomas Busch, Daniel Busch, Lea Philpott, Nathaniel Busch, Clay Blackburn and Bailey Blackburn; great-grandchildren, Gavin, Ainsley and Gibson Wagner; sisters, Kay (Larry) Armstrong, Polly Flynn, Brenda (Russell) Watson and Patty Turner; brother, Mark Peters; several nieces and nephews. Gertrude Maude ‘Gerty’ (Ball) Burton Aug. 24, 1918 — March 12, 2018 Gertrude “Gerty” Maude (Ball) Burton, 99, of Kokomo, passed away at 8:30 a.m. March 12, 2018, at Northwoods Village, Kokomo. Gerty had a full and wonderful life. She was born Aug. 24, 1918, in Mitchell, to the late Frank Ball and Anna Mae (Fletcher) Ball. She grew up with a Tom Sawyer and Becky Thatcher life around the beauty of Spring Mill State Park. Gerty fell in love with her childhood sweetheart Walter (Booty) Burton. They were married in Art Bank, Montana on Feb. 8, 1943, just before her new husband shipped off to Italy to serve his country in World War II. He preceded her in death on Jan. 19, 1991. During the war, Gerty worked for Delco and following the war became a housewife to raise her daughter and son. Gerty was a very active member of Kokomo and during her life was given many special recognition awards from organizations and in the summer of 2010 the city of Kokomo recognized Gerty as the Woman of the Year and announced a day as Gerty Burton day. She was always active sewing, crocheting, quilting, serving on a committee, visiting/helping others and in the last 40 years painting, which became her true love after learning from her daughter-in-law, Linda Burton. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and the Kokomo Arts Association. She was a BYF Youth Fellowship Leader, Guild Girls Leader, Sunday school teacher for over 60 years, Girl Scout Leader, and 4-H Leader. She participated in the Greentown Fair and the Indiana State Fair for over 70 years for canned goods, quilting, dolls and paintings. Gerty loved life and was always ready to help anyone in need. Gerty worked at the Art Works, which is now located on Main Street downtown Kokomo until she was 97. Please visit the studio and you will find a wall upstairs displaying many of her paintings. She will not only be missed from her family but for all the people in Kokomo that she has touched or helped along the way. Gerty touched many lives, loved her grandchildren and loved her great-grandchildren. Survivors include one son, Keith F. (Linda) Burton of Parrish, Florida; one sister, Audra Crispen of Kokomo; eight grandchildren, Philana Orem, Anjanetta Oricoli, Patrick Orem, Alicia Orem, Autumn Paul, Tracy Weldon, Tiffany Peltier and Benjamin Burton. There are also three great-grandchildren AJ Oricoli, Bellamarie Oricoli and Tabitha Cato Burton Peltier. Also surviving is Charlene Olson, who loved Gerty and became her adopted daughter after Diana’s passing. Charlene was a loving friend that visited and took care of Gerty every week that became part of our family. Gerty was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one daughter and son-in-law, Diana Orem and Phillip Orem; three brothers Jim, Garris and Raymond Ball; also three sisters, Ruth Condon, Mary Tickfer and Mabel Lee Ball. March 20, 2018 Ravenna June (Kirkman) Hanners Aug. 11, 1943 — March 18, 2018 Ravenna June Kirkman Hanners, 74, of Bedford, died Sunday, March 18, 2018, in Indianapolis. Born Aug. 11, 1943, she was the daughter of Mavis Kirkman. She married Leonard Norman Hanners on Aug. 15, 1959, at the age of 16. He had three small sons, Leonard Mark Hanners and wife Nikki, Lionel Matthew Hanners and Timothy Morgan Hanners, all of Bedford, to raise. Mom raised them as her own. She had three more children to add to the bunch, Melanie June Zumhingst and husband Jed of Williams, Michael Norman Hanners and wife Beverly of Newport News, Virginia and Martin Jeffrey and wife Salli of Springville. Dad passed away in May of 2006. They had been married 47 years. He was the love of her life. She was baptized at the age of 8 in the creek in Springville. She was a Christian woman and member of American Legion. She devoted her life to raising her children and loving her husband. She was an awesome cook and baker. He was born on September 18, 1942, in Anderson, Indiana, the son of George H. and Maggie (Deckard) Clark. Dan joined the United States Marines Corps following high school in 1960. He was stationed in El Toro, California, following basic training in Pendleton, California. Dan was honorably discharged in 1964. He went on to work for Otis Elevator as a Human Resources Manager, and retired following 34 years of service. Dan was a member of the American Legion, NRA, Gold Wing Motorcycle Club, USCCA and Indiana Sheriff’s Association. He enjoyed car shows, watching NASCAR and motorcycles. March 17, 2018 Dorothy Maxine (Greer) Richards Mar. 12, 1933 — Mar. 15, 2018 Dorothy Maxine Richards’ soul went to join her savior in heaven on March 15, 2018. She was 85 years old. She was residing at Bethlehem Woods nursing home when she died. She had struggled with dementia for at least 10 years, complications of which finally took her. Dorothy was born March 12, 1933, to Lawrence and Agnes Greer at their farm near Mitchell. She met her husband Thomas E. Richards there and it was love at first sight because, after just 6 months, they were married on July 23, 1951. One year later, they welcomed the first of their 4 children, Jane; 18 months after that, Tom Jr. arrived; 4 years later came Mark, and finally James Paul, 4 years after Mark. Dorothy loved God, her husband, her children and her church family. She was very active at Calvary Baptist Church for many years, serving as a Sunday school teacher, church secretary, pianist, choir member and prayer warrior. In addition to her volunteer activities at church, she worked outside the home when her children were older. She held positions in administration with American Hospital Supply and F&G foods. But most of her life was spent making a good home for her husband and children. Dorothy enjoyed traveling, gardening, cooking, art and music. She expressed her love through oil paintings, playing the piano, singing and quilting. In 2007, she lost her beloved husband of 55 years. She never recovered from the loss. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence and Agnes Greer; brothers, Charles, Gerald and Bob Greer; and sisters, Mary Carpenter, Jean Horine and Betty Conner. She is survived by all 4 of her children; her brother, George, 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild. She was a wonderful person and will be missed terribly. Stearns, 83, of Mitchell, formerly of Bedford, died Sunday, March 4, 2018, at Mitchell Manor. Born July 11, 1934, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Henry Thomas and Lillie Mae (Box) Jenkins, one of 12 and all her brothers and brothers-in-law had eventually served in the military. She graduated from Shawswick High School and was also Senior Prom Queen. She was thrilled to save enough money from working at Kresge’s to travel to Washington DC with her graduating class. She married Raymond Edward Stearns on July 2, 1953, whom she had known since they were children. They married in her oldest brother Art and Nora Jenkins’ home. She and Ray traveled with the Army and also vacationed whenever possible. They shared many friends & family and acquired a cherished extended family along their journey; stateside and overseas. She was most proud to wear the title of Mrs. Sergeant Major Stearns when Raymond retired. Her roles as a wife, mother, Christian, musician and homemaker remained her mission throughout their marriage and during her natural life, and treasured being Grandma Alice. She was a skilled seamstress, enjoyed embroidery, cooking and crafts, but mostly spending time with family. Being a military wife she often had to endure long separations from her beloved husband. She was much stronger than even she would ever give herself credit. She was a lifetime member and 3rd generation of the Salvation Army Church and family. Jane also became a sought-after court reporter handling legal depositions throughout southern Indiana, and Bob was always there to proofread every word. Jane was a member of the Dunn Memorial Hospital Board of Directors during its period of expansion, as well as the Dunn Foundation. She was a charter member of the Dunn Auxiliary Pink Ladies. She served many years at St. John’s Episcopal Church of Bedford. Jane was very talented in needlework, knitting, gardening, and loved to cook and bake. Born June 16, 1930, in northwestern Washington County, she was the daughter of Oscar Elmer and Mary Evaline (Phipps) Wade. She married Elmo Chastain on Dec. 25, 1950, in Campbellsburg with Elmo’s grandfather officiating. Elmo preceded her in death Jan. 3, 2014. She was educated in Washington County schools and graduated from Campbellsburg High School in 1949. Elmo and Mildred purchased a farm in southeastern Lawrence County in 1957 and remained there 56 years. The farming operation mainly involved raising corn, soybeans, hogs and cattle. Mildred’s faith in Jesus Christ was evident throughout her teenage and adult years. She was a faithful member of the Fishing Creek Chapel congregation, attending over 60 years serving as secretary for many years and was a longtime piano accompanist during services. Church members were truly an extended family as evidenced through the care, concern and visitations of Fishing Creek members that helped take her to services and meetings at church. After serving in the Marine Corps in the Pacific during World War II, he returned home to farm, his life-long vocation. He moved with much of his extended family to the Bedford area in 1950. In 1951 he married Sue, started his family and began farming in partnership with his brother, Hubert, until the mid-1980s when both brothers took a well-earned retirement. Maurice made his family the center of his life. He was never happier than when he was surrounded by family and a few close friends. He was universally cheerful and maintained a positive outlook throughout his life. He lived by a set of principles that were based on his Christian faith and basic ideals of fairness and equity. Without ever seeming to teach, he set an example for everyone around him of how to live an ethical, responsible and fulfilling life. This combination of amiability and integrity caused him to be asked to join many local boards and committees. He served multiple terms as church trustee and deacon. He was a longtime member of the Farm Bureau board, the Soil and Water Conservation Board, and was actively involved with his children in 4-H. Glenda Sue Bowles Oct. 10, 1961 — Feb. 27, 2018 Glenda Sue Bowles, 56, of Bedford, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2018, at her residence. Born Oct. 10, 1961, in Louisville, Kentucky, she was the daughter of William “Marvin” Bowles Jr. and Angela Rose Bowles. Glenda had earned an Associate Degree from Jefferson Community College. She was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. Glenda was known for her strong Christian faith as witnessed by her commitment to spreading the gospel and the gift of healing. Glenda gave so much love and attention to her family and all the people who touched her life. She will be sadly missed although she will be reunited with Dad, Natasha, and all those who went before her. Surviving are her mother, Angela Bowles of Bedford; four sisters, Janice Somers, Rhonda (Garry) Weldon, Gail (Jim) Moore and Kelly (Lyn) Hanner; nieces, Alicia Phillips, Kara (Cody) Hearth, Jessica Moore, Abbie Moore and Ashlyn Hanner; one nephew, Josh Hanner; and seven great-nieces and great-nephews, Gracie, Lane, Clayton, Makinzy, Maci, Faith and Brantley. She was preceded in death by her father, William “Marvin” Bowles Jr., and one niece Natasha Stillions. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 3, at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, with Father Rick Eldred and Deacon Dave Reising officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Friday at the Ferguson-Lee Chapel of Thorne-George Family Funeral Homes. Rosary will be prayed at 7:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society. Born July 8, 1941, in Cincinnati, Ohio, he was the son of Theophilus and Sleta (Hodges) Hughett. He married Virginia Sue Tanksley June 28, 1963. He had been employed by the City of Bloomington, the City of Mitchell, and retired as a pastry chef for JayC Bakery. Ronald graduated from Mitchell High School in 1961. Survivors include his wife, Virginia Hughett of Bloomington; children, Brian (Cathy) Hughett of Bedford, Kathy Hughett of Bedford, and Kevin Hughett of Bedford; grandchildren, Brittany Hughett, Joseph Hughett and Ashley Hughett; six great-grandchildren; and brother, Raymond Hughett of Orangeville. His parents and brother, Michael Hughett, preceded him in death. Graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Friday, March 2, at Mitchell Cemetery with Pastor Jim Tritle officiating.
