Dr. Donal J. Kaderabek

Dr. Donal J. “Don’ Kaderabek passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home in Bedford on Feb. 20, 2018, four years after his beloved wife of 61 years, Nancy McKenzie Kaderabek, passed away and just after his 87th birthday.
Don was born on Feb. 18, 1931, in West Orange, New Jersey, to Erwin Joseph Kaderabek and Ann Burns Kaderabek.
Don graduated from Harvard University in 1952, and he and Nancy were married on the day of his graduation. Don went on to pursue his medical degree at Columbia University in New York, graduating in 1956, and spent most of his career as a renowned and beloved surgeon in Bedford, referred to warmly as “Dr. K.”
He served his country for three years as a captain in the Armed Forces and volunteered as a surgeon in Haiti through missionary work with the Episcopal Church.
Don supported all forms of scouting (Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts), was an avid reader, and loved to play bridge and chess.
Don is preceded in death by his parents; his wife Nancy; and an infant son David.
He is survived by his four children, Anne Swope (Carl) of Elizabethtown, Kentucky, Dr. Douglas Kaderabek (Marty) of Indianapolis, Charles Kaderabek (Lynn) of San Diego, California, and Michael Kaderabek (Rebecca) of Vincennes; 11 grandchildren, Susan Schmidt (Blake), Jennifer Scarbrough (Adam), David Swope, Allison Marie Kaderabek, Stephen Kaderabek, April Silfies (Brian), Nicholas Kaderabek, Kate Kaderabek, Michael Sera Kaderabek, Haley Kaderabek and Hanna Kaderabek; and five great-grandchildren: Griffin and Malcolm Silfies, Mason and McKenzie Schmidt, and Foster Scarbrough.

Kevin Dean Pace, 53, of Bedford, died at 9:22 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 24, 2018, at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.
Born Feb. 3, 1965 in Bedford, he was the son of Roy and Mary Jane (Kanis) Pace. He married Wandajoe Payne on July 30, 2005, and she survives.
He was a maintenance worker and member of Meadows Community Church. He loved restoring cars, bringing them back to life and was an avid Raiders fan.
Survivors include his wife, Wandajoe of Bedford; a son, Christopher Daniels of Bedford; a daughter, Misty Daniels of Bedford; three grandchildren, Dathan Ray Moody, Deondre Daniels and Alayziah Daniels; three dogs, Molly, Lady Bug and Mad Max; and two brothers, Jeffrey Pace of Clarksville, Maryland and Karl Pace of Fontain, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his parents; aunt, Nancy Pace; and grandma and grandpa Pace.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 2, in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Pastors Bob Courson, Max Cain and Randy Baker officiating. Cremation will follow.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday and from 10 a.m. until the service on Friday at the Day & Carter Mortuary.

Martha M. (Ray) Sowders, 66, of Heltonville, passed away with her family by her side on Sunday, Feb. 25, 2018.
Martha was born Aug. 16, 1951, in Bedford, to William Harold and Mildred Avnail Ray, who preceded her in death. She married Raymond “Bud” Sowders on May 15, 1970.
She retired from Bloomington Hospital in 2010. She dedicated her life to her family. She loved being a wife, mom and grandmother. She exemplified her love by doing all she could for her family.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her sister, Judy Eggers.
Surviving to cherish her memory are her husband, Bud Sowders; children, Rick (Ali) Sowders and Krystal (Bob) Miller; and her very special grandson, Casey Wayne Sowders.
She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Wanda Holt passed away Saturday, February 24, 2018, at Mitchell Manor Living and Rehabilitation Center.
Born November 29, 1942, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Carl and Lucille (Hopkins) Leatherman.
Wanda had been employed at Dana Corporation and was a member of the First Apostolic Church of Jesus Christ in Mitchell.
Surviving are her children, Johnny Wayne (Tammy) Holt of Shoals, Sandra (Mathew) Deckard of Bedford; grandchildren, Eric (Carla) Holt of Shoals, Holli Holt of Shoals, Daniel (Haley) Holt of Bedford, Courtney June Brown of South Carolina, Autumn Jones of Bedford, Jessica Huff, Devin Jones; great grandchildren, Jace and Aubri Holt of Orleans, Cheylee Jones of Bedford, Zayden Turner of Bedford, Chloe Holt, Clarissa Holt and Gracelee Holt of Shoals, Emma and Mikah McCowan, Hannah Nelson of Shoals, and River Clark of Shoals.
Her parents and children, Bobetta Jean Leatherman and Kenneth Ray Holt, Jr., preceded her in death.
Cremation was chosen with burial at a later date in Lawrenceport Cemetery.

Dr. John F. Medlock
Sept. 17, 1924 — Feb. 23, 2018
Dr. John was born Sept. 17, 1924, to Jack and Emma (Smith) Medlock, Needmore. He married Viola Jackson on Feb. 15, 1947, and she survives. He died peacefully surrounded by all his family.
Dr. John was proceeded in death by his identical twin brother, Dr. Robert ‘Bob’ Medlock, March 2007.
He graduated from Needmore High School in 1942 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943. He attended a number of different aviation ordinance schools, and eventually was assigned to a base on Attu, the last island in the Aleutian Islands chain off of the Alaskan Peninsula. The Battle of Attu was of particular importance during World War II because it was the only land battle fought on U.S. territory since the War of 1812. Both brothers served together for 3 years as top turret gunners in the same Navy flight squadron but on different flight crews.
Following WW II, the twins graduated from Veterinary Medical School at Michigan State University in 1954. They returned to Lawrence County and established North Side Animal Hospital (later renamed Bedford Veterinary Medical Center). He practiced Veterinary Medicine for 32 years. John married Viola (Vi) Jackson Feb. 15, 1947. They just celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary.
Dr. John was a lifetime member of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the Indiana State VMA, and the 9th District AVMA. He twice served as president of the 9th District VMA and once served as Chairman of the State VM Examination Board.
He served on the Bedford Medical Center Board of Directors for over 20 years. He was a Ray W. Fry Outstanding Alumni and a member of Faith Mission Church for almost 70 years. Additionally, he was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post No. 33, the FOP; and was at one time active in the Kiwanis, the Elks, Bedford Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis, and the Murat Shrine Temple.
He is survived by his wife, Viola; one son, John Duane Medlock (wife Robin) of Fort Myers Beach, Florida; three daughters Nancy Butler (husband Greg) of Bloomington, Debbie Wessel (husband Dennis) of Bedford and Debbie Rainey (husband Myron) of Bedford; five grandsons; five granddaughters; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers and five sisters.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at Day & Carter Mortuary with the Rev. Leonard Sankey, the Rev. David Crosley, and the Rev. Mark Stetler officiating. Burial will follow at the Cresthaven Memory Gardens. Military Honors will be accorded at the graveside.
Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. on Tuesday at the mortuary.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Stone City Christian Academy.

Rebecca M. “Becky” (Reynolds) Webb, 63, of Bedford, died at 2:45 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 22, 2018, at Indiana University Hospital in Indianapolis.
Born Nov. 12, 1954, in Bedford, she was the daughter of William and Patricia (Johnson) Reynolds. She married Russell Webb on May 26, 2016, and he survives.
She was a 1972 graduate of Oolitic High School and retired from the Dana Corporation. She was a member of the Bedford Baptist Temple.
Survivors include her husband, Russell of Bedford; her father, William Reynolds of Bedford; a brother, William Reynolds II and his wife Bonita of Bedford; children, Dustin Allen and wife Natasha of Bedford, Kip Allen and wife Amy of Orleans and Richard “Wil” Allen and wife Brandy of Orleans; and grandchildren, Kelsi, Kensi, Shylyn, Mylee and Braden Allen and Mady Snack.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Patricia; a sister, Janie Webb; and three brothers, Patrick C., Auburn and Randy “RJ” Reynolds.
Rebecca was a selfless and loving woman of Christ. She would do anything for those that she loved. She enjoyed taking trips to the mountains and spending time with friends and family. She will be remembered for her heart of gold and remarkable sense of humor.

Gene P. Whitford, 86, of Bedford, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2018, at Brown County Health and Living in Nashville.
Born March 13, 1931, in Silver Grove, Kentucky, he was the son of Ralph and Estella (Lising) Whitford.
He married Sharon Schooley, on Oct. 1, 1955, and she survives.
Gene retired from the Marine Corps after 22 years of service, a veteran of the Vietnam War, a Bronze Star recipient, and an atomic Marine. He was a lifelong member of the American Legion and VFW, and had previously managed the Bedford Elks.
Surviving are his wife, Sharon of Bedford; daughters, Lee Ann (Tim) Kelly of Bedford and Theresa (Fred) Heider, of Fort Wayne; three grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Jerry (Dianne) Whitford, Joseph (Sheila) Whitford and Robert (Wanda) Whitford, and two sisters, Kay Barth and Sue (Dale) Rainey.
He was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers, Ralph, Donald, Ronald, Daniel, Russell and David; and sisters, Donna Lee Pelle, Mary Ann Combs and Shirley Jones.
Memorial services will be held at a later date at Beech Grove Cemetery.

Phyllis Jean (Taylor) Bruton

Phyllis Jean Bruton, 87, of Bedford went into God’s presence Feb. 17 at her residence.
Born July 17, 1930, in Bloomington, she was the daughter of Merle and Ethel (Mitchell) Taylor. She married E.J. Bruton on June 18, 1949, and he preceded her in death Oct. 11, 2003. They were married 54 years.
Phyllis was a co-laborer with her husband the Rev. E.J. Bruton ordained with the Assemblies of God in ministry for over 35 years. Their pastorates in Indiana were in Boonville, Clinton, Mishawaka, Plymouth, Bedford and Portage. They also ministered in Springfield, Missouri and Sturgis, Michigan. Phyllis served as the church pianist/organist and coordinated the music ministry, children’s ministry, women’s ministry, Bible quiz teams and special drama events.
She was also a beloved and faithful Sunday school teacher. She hosted many evangelists and missionaries as guests in their home over the years. She was currently a member of Tabernacle of Praise church.
She was devoted to her family and enjoyed cooking special meals for them and creating holiday memories. Phyllis loved to spend time decorating her home as well as caring for family pets and taking care of her beautiful plants and flowers.
Survivors include her two daughters, Jennifer “Ginger” Crouch and husband Mark of Martinsville and Joni Stansbury and husband David of Springville; four grandchildren, Jesika (Crouch) Smith of Bargersville, Jamison Crouch of Cloverdale, Kyle Stansbury of Bedford, Kandace (Stansbury) Lecocq of Baltimore, Maryland; and three great-grandchildren, Jaxton and Jessalyn Smith of Bargersville and Saja Lecocq of Baltimore. A fourth great-grandchild due in April. She is also survived by her beloved sister, Mary Kathryn (Taylor) Bellah of Avon; a brother-in-law, Ray Roepke of Springfield, Missouri and a sister-in-law, Mary Alice Smith of Monticello; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the staff of Southern Care Hospice for the care of their mother in her last illness.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 24, at Tabernacle of Praise with Pastor Gary Thomas officiating. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday at Day & Carter Mortuary.
Burial will follow the service at Clover Hill Cemetery in Harrodsburg.

Pattie Rae Eicher McKnight Tovey, 92, of Terre Haute, a native of Bedford, died Thursday, Feb. 15, 2018 in Terre Haute.
Born Dec. 4, 1925, in Orleans, she was the daughter of Ellis Ray and Fern (Cornwell) Eicher. She married William H. Tovey on Aug. 24, 1966, and he preceded her in death on Oct. 25, 2003.
She graduated from Bedford High School with the Class of 1943. She retired from Citizens National Bank in 1981 after 31 years as a teller and receptionist.
Pattie was a life-long member of the First Baptist Church. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and Indiana Firefighters Association and Lawrence County Historical Society.
She enjoyed reading and spending time with her beloved family and friends.
Survivors include a daughter, Susan McKnight Newton and husband Daniel of Terre Haute; a son, Col. Mark E. McKnight, U.S. Army Retired and wife Christy of Leavenworth, Kansas; six grandchildren, Angela Reusser and husband Douglas of Carmel, Amanda Payne and husband Jesse of Doha, Qatar, Cpt. Ian Ellis McKnight, U.S. Army and Cpt. Mitchell McKnight, U.S. Army, both of Fort Benning, Georgia, Sarah McKnight of Indianapolis, and Meredith McKnight of Leavenworth, Kansas; four great grandchildren; and a brother, Ellis Dean Eicher and wife Fran of Longmont, Colorado.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Eli Tommy New, 85, of Mitchell, died Sunday, Feb. 18, 2018, at IU Health Bedford Hospital.
Born Dec. 6, 1932, in Wayne County, Kentucky, he was the son of Lloyd and Vannie (New) New. He married Lena Marie Warren on May 18, 1956, and she preceded him in death on Dec. 23, 1995.
He was a hooker at Indiana Limestone and a laborer for Kaiser Aluminum in Ravenswood. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in Japan during the Korean War and a member of the Cecil Martin Post No. 250 American Legion in Mitchell. He was a deacon at the General Baptist Church in East Oolitic for several years and later joined Calvary Chapel Church.
He was a friend to everyone and would do whatever he could to help without expecting anything in return.
Survivors include a son, Bill New of Mitchell; three grandchildren, Landon, Leo and Wylie New; a brother, Daniel of Bedford; a sister, Donna of Bloomington; and several nieces, nephews, sisters- and brothers-in-law.

Ronald Clark Toppe

Ronald Clark Toppe, 76, of Bedford, passed away at 6:41 p.m. on Feb. 18, 2018, at St. Vincent Dunn Hospital in Bedford.
Ron was born on Aug. 26, 1941, in Seymour, to Millard and Edna (Burckdall) Toppe. Ron graduated from Seymour High School and was a National Merit Scholarship finalist.
After graduation from Indiana University, Ron was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps and moved to Pensacola, Florida, for flight training. In 1966, Ron left for Vietnam and was assigned to an F4 Phantom squadron. He was awarded two Distinguished Flying Crosses for his service in Vietnam.
After leaving active duty, Ron and his wife Judy attended graduate school at Arkansas State University and became teachers. He later worked at Essex Wire in Orleans, Fort Wayne, Rockford, Illinois, and Vincennes. Ron’s wife, Judy, opened the first Edward Jones office in Rockford.
He was active in the United Methodist Church for several years, serving as work coordinator for youth mission groups, working on the Methodist Habitat for Humanity House, and made several trips with UMCOR to assist with hurricane relief.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Judy (Fields) Toppe; two children, Ardee David Toppe (Sally) and Rebecca (Toppe) Shortridge (Brad); four grandchildren, Lauren Toppe Thomas (Isaac), Clark Nelson Toppe, Jackson David Shortridge and Riley Fields Shortridge; one sister, Betsy Bartel (L. Dan); and a sister-in-law, Sue Fields Green.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 23, 2018, at the Orleans United Methodist Church with Pastor Ed Fisher officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Orleans with military rites conducted by the Orleans American Legion.
Friends are invited to visitation from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday at Ochs-Tetrick Funeral Home.

Dallas Eugene Maze, 76, of Bedford, passed away Sunday, Feb. 18, 2018, at Bell Trace Rehabilitation Center in Bloomington.
Born May 26, 1941, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Lawrence and Minnie (Simmerman) Maze.
He married Sharon Battcher on Aug. 24, 1967; and she survives.
He was a graduate of Fayetteville High School, class of 1959. He served in the U.S. Army as a paratrooper. Dallas retired from NWSC Crane.
Surviving are his wife, Sharon Maze; children, Fred Maze and husband Todd Price, Janet and husband John Graham and Bill and his wife Julie Maze; grandchildren, Christopher and wife Amanda Graham, Jeffrey Graham (Carrie), Dustin Maze, Heather Helton and Keith Maze (Marly); and six great-grandchildren.
Dallas had a great love for the outdoors, hunting and fishing. Above all he adored taking care of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 24, 2018, at Owensburg Cemetery, with Keith Maze officiating. Military rites will be accorded by American Legion Gillen Post No. 33.
Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. on Wednesday at Ferguson-Lee Chapel of Thorne-George Family Funeral Homes.

Jeremy Douglas George, 41, Bedford, passed away Feb. 15, 2018, after enduring a lengthy battle with lupus and multiple associated complications.
He was born Nov. 11, 1976, at Howard County Regional Hospital.
For those who had the pleasure of knowing Jeremy, it was necessary to accept that his political correctness filter was broken years ago. If Jeremy insulted you on a regular basis, then you knew these were terms of endearment and you had made it into his inner circle where you would be protected fiercely and loyally.
If you asked Jeremy the best thing that ever happened in his life, he would undoubtedly tell you it was the birth of his daughter, Makenna. He lived for his time with her. His love and dedication to her were apparent when he was with her or talked about her.
Jeremy will forever be remembered by his mother, Susan George; daughter, Makenna; siblings, Robbie Goldsberry, Charity (Toby) Cicak and Ricky (Christine) Kinser; and numerous nephews and nieces, extended family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Steven George; and grandparents, Marian Ford, Ira and Oreda Keith, and Elmer and Sylvia George.
A celebration of Jeremy’s life will be held from 1-5 p.m. on March 24, at the Free Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, located at 630 R St., Bedford. This will be an informal celebration where family and friends may visit with each other and share their stories.

Kenneth Doyle Haag, 76, of Bedford, passed away Sunday, Feb. 18, 2018, at IU Health Hospital in Indianapolis with his family at his side.
He was born on June 20, 1941, in Washington to Gerald M. and Loeva (Messell) Haag. He married Phyllis A. Grannan, Dec. 30, 1961, and she survives.
He was a graduate of Washington Catholic High School in 1959 and was a member of St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church.
Kenneth was an avid Chicago Bear and IU Fan. He loved playing golf in his leisure; also, he enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s ballgames and activities.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Haag of Bedford; daughters, Kimberly (Mark) Baker of Springville and Karen (Tony) Johnson of Indianapolis; son, Rodney Haag of Ellettsville; two brothers, William (Janet) Haag of Bedford and Steve Haag of Leesburg, Florida; ten grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Burial will be at a later date.

Wilma Laverne Fountain, 85, of Zelma, died at 4:45 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 17, 2018, at the White River Lodge in Bedford.
Born Oct. 10, 1932, she was the daughter of Zanford and Margaret (Martin) Kinser. She married George W. Fountain on June 18, 1950, and he preceded her in death on April 5, 2017.
She attended the Donica Church of God.
Survivors include a son, George Michael Fountain and wife Bonnie of Zelma; a daughter, Paula Brooking and husband, Louie of Zelma; five grandsons, Troy and Eric Fountain, both of Zelma, Cory Fountain and wife Cassidy of Turkey, Kevin W. Brooking and wife Robin, of Ellettsville, Nathan Brooking and wife Kara, of Pickens, S.C.; nine great-grandchildren, Hannah Fountain, Billy Fountain, Ella Fountain, Emma Fountain, Chloe Fountain, Benjamin Fountain, Kinsley Brooking, Charlotte Brooking and Colton Brooking; one great-great-granddaughter, Sadie Hollar; two brothers, Richard Kinser and wife Sharon of Heltonville and Gene Kinser of Bedford; two sisters, Ann Hunt and husband Gordon of Norman and Nancy Sowder and husband Butch of Bedford; a brother-in-law, Duane Chastain of Bedford; and a special caregiver, Shirley Hamilton.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Billy Fountain; and a sister, Kathryn Chastain.

William G. Henderson, 84, of Bedford, died at 1:50 a.m. on Saturday, February 17, 2018, at Baptist Health Floyd Hospital in New Albany. Born March 25, 1933, in Mitchell, he was the son of Kelsey Opal and Doris (Railing) Henderson. He married Sandra S. “Sonnie” Chambers on June 4, 1954, and she survives.
William was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. After a career in real estate, he was a Senior Vice President of Stone City Bank for many years and then Executive Director of the Southern Indiana Development Commission until he retired. He was a community advocate, consummate volunteer and passionate leader. A lifelong Democrat, he was active for many years in local politics. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, where he served as a Certified Lay Minister, Deacon and Sunday School teacher.
He was a Member and Past Master of the Bedford Masonic Lodge F&M No. 14 for 60 years and a member of the Lawrence County Past Masters Association. He raised over 70 men into the Masonic Lodge, including his own grandson Travis Biesel. He was a Past Exalted Ruler of Elks Lodge No. 826, Bedford City Councilman, Bedford Chamber of Commerce (President), Bedford Planning Commission (President), Lawrence County United Way (President), Bedford Board of Zoning Appeals, Sheriff’s Merit Board, Power Squadron, Alcohol Beverage Commission Board, SCAVI (South Central Association of the Visually Impaired) and Bedford Little Theater.
He was also a Kentucky Colonel. He loved time with his family, worldwide travel, sailing, bicycling, cooking and taught himself to play over ten musical instruments. He was a talented artist, drawing favorite cartoon characters on playhouses, bedroom walls, the Children’s Area at Garden Villas and in the halls of Englewood Elementary School.
After his failing sight no longer allowed him to drive, he was seen daily walking throughout town.
Survivors include his wife, Sonnie of Bedford; two sons, Stephen “Marc” Henderson and wife Jo of Evansville and William “Patrick” Henderson and wife Gina of Owensburg; one daughter, Lois “Suzanne” Bowman and husband Ken of Sellersburg; nine grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; two sisters-in-law Lois Henderson and Jimmy Jansen.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Frank Burns Henderson and Garris R. Henderson, one brother-in-law, James M. Jansen and two sisters-in-law, Jackie Henderson and Phyllis Chambers.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 22, 2018, in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Pastors Nathan Sundt and Riley Walker officiating. Born April 8, 1944, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Enoch O. and Gertie (New) Patton. He married Linda Lemen on Dec. 28, 1972, and she preceded him in death on Oct. 12, 2003. He was a 1962 graduate of Needmore High School, a U.S. Army veteran serving in Vietnam. He retired from NSWC Crane.
Survivors include two daughters, Amy Garland and husband David of Bedford, and Barbara Patton of Bedford; one granddaughter, Elizabeth Garland of Bedford; six brothers, George Wayne Patton (his twin) of Springville, Donald O. Patton and wife Patty of Solsberry, Samuel O. Patton and wife Eloise of Ellettsville, Clifford D. Patton and wife Sue of Heltonville, Ronald E. Patton of Florida and Keith D. Patton of Bloomington, several nieces, and nephews.

Norman Gerkin, 81, of Montgomery passed away on Saturday, Feb. 17, 2018, at 3:27 p.m at Memorial Hospital in Jasper, surrounded by his family.
He was born Jan. 21, 1937 in Mitchell, to the late Lawrence and Thelma (Clouse) Gerkin.
Norman married Judy (Shirley) Gerkin on May 25, 1956.
He joined B&O Railroad as a train dispatcher in 1955 until 1995. Norman was a farmer and was know as a “jack of all trades”; he could fix anything. He was a member of White River Baptist Church in Buddah.
Norman was preceded in death by his parents; Lawrence and Thelma, his brothers; Bill, Bernard, Jon, and Ronnie Gerkin.
He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Judy Gerkin, his children, Lynn (Jerry) Stoll of Montgomery, Dale (Shirley) Gerkin of Loogootee, Bobby (Tammatha) Gerkin of Bedford, Indiana; his grandchildren; Jeremy (Anita) Stoll, Amanda (Jodey) Neukam, Emily (Adam) Cornelius, Virginia Gerkin, Lynnette (Adam) Sell, Brandy (Rick) Gerkin–Combs, and Jesse Gerkin; 10 great-grandchildren, his sisters-in-law, Wanda, Betty, Doris and Faye Gerkin and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Born May 22, 1929, in Bedford, he was the son of Lawrence C. and Bessie (Skeen) Thorne. He married Patricia Ann Wadeking on July 16, 1950; and she preceded him in death on Jan. 13, 2015.
He was a graduate of Bedford High School Class of 1948 and was a member of First Baptist Church since 1950.
Tom was the former owner of Thorne’s Market, Bedford Bicycle Center, Thorne’s Homes, and the current owner of Town and Country Mobile Home Park.

Kevin P. Tubridy

Kevin P. Tubridy, 57, yielded to his long bout with multiple myeloma, passing away on Wednesday morning, Feb. 14, 2018, at the Indiana University Hospice House.
Kevin was born on March 29, 1960, in Worcester, Massachusetts, son of the late Patrick and M. Carol (Bagin) Tubridy. He graduated from Burncoat Senior High School in 1978, and attended Northeastern University in Boston.
Kevin traveled and worked in several states along the U.S. East Coast before settling in Indiana, where he worked for a number of years in supply chain for Lear Corporation, before leaving to follow his dream of starting up and owning a restaurant business.
While at Lear, Kevin met Merrilee Kirkwood and the two were married on July 26, 2003.
Kevin was an avid reader, animal lover, sports fan of the Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots, loved riding his motorcycle, golfing, and was a longtime volunteer at local food pantries.
In addition to his beloved wife Merrilee; Kevin leaves behind stepson, James Kirkwood and grandson, Dylan, all of Bedford. He is also survived by his three siblings, Patricia and her husband David Walsh of Holden, Massachusetts, John and his wife Kathleen of Chelmsford, Massachusetts, and Michael and his wife Lynda of Charlottesville, Virginia. He also leaves his mother-in-law, Marvel Moore; brother-in-law, Kenneth Moore and his wife Kathy; sisters-in-law, Martha and her husband Gary Schopmeyer and Rose Moore; and several nieces and nephews.
In accordance with Kevin’s wishes, a private memorial celebration for the family was held in Bloomington.

Margaret Ann Baker, 89, of Bedford, died Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2018, at IU Health Bedford Hospital.
Born May 29, 1928, she was the daughter of Granvel Benton and Eva (Brewer) Harris. She married Chester Junior Baker on Dec. 6, 1946, and he preceded her in death on Nov. 24, 2017, after 70 years of marriage.
She was a homemaker and a 4-H leader for 20 years. Early in life, she was a member of the First Baptist Church for 50 years where she served as a deaconess. She then joined the Leatherwood Church where she was a member for over 30 years.
She devoted her life to helping others, family, in church, and her friends and neighbors. She served in many areas of both churches, including women’s groups, nursery, and kitchen help. She was an avid card player, playing in various card groups for many years.
Survivors include four daughters, Cathy (Mike) Allman of Bedford, Mona (Tim) Wolf of Cincinnati, Ohio, Louisa (Mike) Ooley of Bedford and Nellie Neal of Lafayette; 10 grandchildren, Greg (Autumn) Allman, Robert (Krystal) Allman, Sara Wolf, Samantha Wolf, Jessica Wolf, Jacob (Jessica) Wolf, Ben Ooley, Chris Ooley, James Neal and Kay (Tyson) Moore; five great-grandchildren, Cason Moore, Bailey Moore, Raegan Moore, Tatum Moore and Asa Allman; a sister, Kay Johnson of Hartford, Kentucky; a sister-in-law, Nellie Reynolds of Columbus; and her caregiver and friend, Ellen Steimel of Bedford.

James had been a nurse’s aide and was a mentor. He was a graduate of Bedford North Lawrence High School and Vincennes University.
James had been employed at LifeDesigns and enjoyed working with children and disabled adults. He had a big heart and was a great son and brother. James was loved very much and will be missed.
Survivors include his father, William Samuel Edmonson Sr. of Mitchell; siblings, Elizabeth Knight of Mitchell, William Samuel Edmonson Jr. of Mitchell, and Jenelle Brooks of Indianapolis; and lots of nieces and nephews.

Pauline retired from RCA and attended the Mitchell Church of the Nazarene. She graduated from Mitchell High School in 1964.

She married Hugh Evans on April 21, 1951, and he preceded her in death on May 5, 1977.
She worked at Jim Jones Linen Service for 10 years and retired in 1992.
She is survived by four children, Teresa Donetta Hagemier (Richard) of Orleans, Anthony Lawrence Evans (Billie) of Paoli, Deborah Jane Evans of Orleans and Gregory Wayne Evans (Kristy) of Mitchell; three siblings, Lillian Mae Brooks of Sulphur, Louisana, Gilbert Eugene Terrell of Ohio and Espy Lawrence Terrell of Paoli.

Sharon Kay (Foster) Benefiel, passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by family on Sunday, Feb. 4, 2018, in Indianapolis.
Sharon is survived by her children, Daniel and Sean Benefiel; grandchildren, Nathaniel and Joel Benefiel; former husband, Daniel Benefiel; and siblings, Vivian Walsh of Bedford and Gerald Foster of Shoals.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Carolyn Bennett of Mitchell and Gilda Snow of Bedford; three brothers, Larry, Michael and Donald Foster of Bedford.
Sharon was born on Oct. 28, 1952, in Bedford to Edith Mildred and Victor Eugene Foster. She was the youngest of eight children, and graduated from Bedford High School in 1970. She then attended Wishard School of Nursing, where she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing in 1973. Upon graduation, Sharon began working for Wishard Hospital as a surgical nurse. She worked on several units inside of Wishard Hospital, served as Vice President of the Alumni, retiring in 2014.
Sharon’s children remember her as a gentle, caring, compassionate and inspiring woman who encouraged them to pursue their dreams, be kind to everyone they meet, and walk through life with their head held high while making others smile. Sharon never met a stranger, and lived to be an example of hard work, empathy, while constantly seeking to understand the good in people. She loved bringing people together and was the glue that bonded so many friends and family over the years.
A Celebration of Life is scheduled for March 10, 2018, at the Company Concourse in Bedford. All are encouraged to attend and celebrate Sharon’s life.

Michael Harold Hilkey

Michael Harold Hilkey, 70, of Bedford, passed away suddenly at St. Vincent Dunn Hospital on Feb. 8, 2018. He is now sheltered in the arms of our Lord, but is immensely missed by his loving family.
He was born on Jan. 14, 1948, in Glenwood Springs, Colorado, to Harold and Mary (Hersey) Hilkey. He was a graduate of Whiting High School and in 1970 from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. Michael married Gloria N. Cummings on March 6, 1976, and she survives.
He was a power plant turbine generator specialist for the General Electric Chicago office from 1970-1975. He spent a year with Weston Paper Company in Terre Haute, where he and Gloria lived at the time. In 1977 he worked once again with G.E.’s Chicago office; transferring in 1978 to the G.E. Indianapolis office. Beginning in 1987 he commuted 15 years from Bedford to Indianapolis Power & Light as an engineer. He returned to GE based from the Cincinnati office in 2001 and retired in Dec. 2009. Michael traveled the world for GE; Indonesia, Puerto Rico, Japan, etc. as well as all over the U.S.
He also worked on a survey/timber crew in Alaska two summers during college. He fulfilled a dream to show Gloria that great state in 2008; a highlight of their lives. He and Gloria traveled the country extensively with their children, including Hawaii.
As a member of First Baptist Church, Michael served as trustee and enjoyed the Christian Fellowship class very much. He was a wonderful friend and neighbor; helping any way he could when needed.
Being an active member of the Lawrence County Beekeepers Association, tending to his hives brought him joy. He loved carpentry and completed numerous projects and extensive home improvements.
Besides his wife; survivors include daughter, Tracey C. Powers and husband Ryan of Belvidere Illinois; son, Dustin M. Hilkey and his wife Ashley of Bloomington and son, Anthony J. “Tony” Hilkey and wife Melissa of Bedford; three grandchildren, Kyndall and Dempsey Powers, and Baby Boy Hilkey; one brother, Jack Hilkey and wife Joyce of Denver, Colorado; Aunt Loene Shoup of Durango, Colorado; plus several cousins, nieces and nephews, as well as his beloved furry canine friends, Teddy and Tuffy.
Michael was preceded in death by his parents and several aunts and uncles.
Funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 16, at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Nathan Sundt and the Rev. Lee Brown officiating. Michael will be laid to rest at Cresthaven Memory Gardens.
Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. on Thursday at Ferguson-Lee Chapel of Thorne-George Family Funeral homes.

Richard Max Wright, 75, passed away Sunday, Feb. 11, 2018, at Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.
Born Dec. 1, 1942, in Tunnelton, he was the son of William and Katherine (McCart) Wright. He married Cyndia Lou Hollars Oct. 27, 1962.
Max retired from General Motors with 34 years of service. He was a member of Clearview Baptist Church, and a board member of Hoosier Hills Credit Union and Tunnelton Cemetery. Max graduated from Tunnelton High School in 1961 and scored over 1,000 points for the Tunnelton Indians basketball team.
He was an avid gardener and enjoyed swimming, fishing and hunting.
Survivors include his wife, Cyndia Wright of Bedford; children, Shelli (Steve) Warren of Bloomington and Richard Max (Christine) Wright Jr. of Zionsville; grandchildren, Asheli Bridwell, Katie Wright, Derek Wright, Carson Wright and Caleb Wright; and brothers, Billy (Boots) Wright of Tunnelton and Michael Wright of Buddha.
His parents preceded him in death.

Born May 28, 1929, in Bedford, he was the son of Clifford and Bernice (Cummings) Norman. He married Jeanette Bailey on May 6, 1996, and she survives.
He was a tool and die maker and a supervisor at General Motors. He was a member of the Dive Christian Church.

Born Nov. 26, 1925, in Buddha, he was the son of Delbert and Hazel (Greene) Mathews. He married Anna Mary Harris on Jan. 7, 1947, and she survives.
He retired as a Die Setter at Central Foundry. He was an 80-year member of the White River Baptist Church, a 55- year member of the Medora Masonic Lodge No. 328 F & AM, and a 60-year member of the K.P. Lodge. He served several years on the Lawrence County 4-H Fair Board.
Survivors include his wife, Anna Mary of Bedford; a daughter, Jane Bierbaum and husband Robert; a son, Bill L. Mathews and wife Lisa; four grandsons, Dean Bierbaum and wife Christy and Mike Bierbaum and wife Jen, Scott Mathews and wife Ashley and Jacob Mathews; three great-grandsons; one great-granddaughter; one great-great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.

Evelyn Andrea Hewitt, 80, of Shoals, passed away at 4:10 a.m. on Feb. 12, 2018, at the Westview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Bedford.
She was born on Sept. 28, 1937, in Scipio, to Everett And Eliza (Abbett) Dorsey. She married Paul Dean Hewitt on Aug. 22, 1953, in Orleans, and he survives.
She was a homemaker and attended and supported the Shoals United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her husband; one daughter, Sonja Davis and husband Shannon of Bloomington; three sons, Paul Eugene Hewitt and wife Sandee of Vevay, Brian Hewitt and wife Teresa of Terre Haute and Clark Hewitt and wife Kathy of Saudi Arabia; two sisters, Carlyn Williams of Dade City, Florida and Deborah Chattin of Virginia Beach, Virginia; two brothers Robert Dorsey of Knoxville, Tennessee and Francis Dorsey of Loogootee; 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren also survive.
She is preceded in death her parents; and one brother, Carl Patterson.
Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Queen-Lee Chapel in Shoals with the Rev. Leonard Cole officiating. Burial will be in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Arthur “Bud” Osborne, 84, passed away Saturday, Feb. 10, 2018, at St. Marys Manor.
He was born Nov. 15, 1933, at Three Points, Kentucky, the son of Daniel and Fanny Mae Shockley Osborne. He was raised in Louisville where he attended school.
Mr. Osborne was an accountant for Reynolds Metal for 20 years. He later owned and operated The Keg Liquor Store in Mitchell, for many years. He moved to the St. Marys community several years ago. Mr. Osborne was a member of the Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Eva Rowland.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, JoAnn; two sons, Jerry (Barbara) Osborne of St. Marys and Kevin (Shelly) Osborne of Mitchell; two sisters, Corrina Hinman, Bedford and Santessa Richardson of Bardstown, Kentucky; four granddaughters, Heather and Traci Sergent, Miranda Salyer and Destiny Skeen; 16 great-grandchildren with two on the way.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2018, at the Valley View Cemetery, St. Marys.

Born April 9, 1933, in Paoli, he was the son of Hobart and Edith Mae (Baldwin) King. He married Margaret Sue Pridemore Jan. 9, 1954.
Phillip had been employed at Indiana Sandstone Company and retired from the Indiana State Highway Department. He was a welder, loved history, and helped found the Huron Fire Department.
Phillip graduated from Huron High School in 1952.

Born June 9, 1926, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of George and Amanda (Drabing) Barnett. She married Charles E. Spires on Nov. 24, 1943, and he preceded her in death on Nov. 23, 2004.
She was a homemaker and member of the Englewood Baptist Church.
Survivors include four sons, Michael Eugene Spires of Bedford, Gregory Shane Spires of Bloomington, Stephen Jerome Spires and wife Cora of Bedford, and Tracy Dee Spires and wife Mary of Colorado; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren.

Vivian A. “Viv” Simmons, 92, North Manchester, died at 6:35 p.m. on Feb. 8, 2018, at Timbercrest Senior Living Community in North Manchester.
Born Sept. 16, 1925, in Bedford, he was the son of Raymond S. and Rose (Wagoner) Simmons; both of whom preceded him in death. He married Neva J. Owens on March 16, 1947. She passed away Aug. 26, 2000.
He was a retired school administrator.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, serving on the aircraft carrier USS Salamaua.
He was a member of the North Manchester United Methodist Church.
He was named North Manchester Citizen of the Year for 2011. He was co-founder of the Garber-Simmons Senior Center, North Manchester. He graduated from Bedford High School in 1943, where he played in the state basketball tournament. He was a lifelong Rotarian and received the Paul Harris Fellow recognition twice.
Survivors include one daughter, Sally (Robert) Vaccaro, Mansfield, Ohio; a daughter-in-law, Sue Simmons of Westfield; grandchildren, Abbie (Russ) Mann of Carmel, Brad (Whitney) Simmons of Westfield, Elizabeth (Bart) Ames of Mansfield, Ohio, and Benjamin (Amanda) Vaccaro of Ruskin, Florida; great-grandchildren, Ava, Annie, Taylor, Delaney, Burke, Grace and Noah.
He was preceded in death by one son, Joseph C. Simmons; four brothers, Lowell, Forty, Doyle and Ray Jr.; and one sister, Mary Ruth Lewis.
Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. on Monday at the North Manchester United Methodist Church, 306 E. Second St., with Pastors David Colgan, Mark Eastway and Larry Ray officiating. Burial will be at Oaklawn Cemetery in North Manchester.

Born Sept. 8, 1948, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Lawrence T. and Mable Helen (Mitchell) Colgan. He married Linda Sue Shonk, and she survives.
He was a retired school teacher and had taught Vocational Drafting for many years.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge for many years.
Survivors include, his wife, Linda Sue Colgan of Robinson, Illinois; a son, Michael Brent Colgan of Terre Haute; three siblings, Daniel D. Colgan of Plant City, Florida, Deittra Dian Sluder and her husband Richard K. of Bedford and Donald D. Colgan and his wife Mari of Valrico, Florida; and nieces and nephews, Lara Ann McGinness and her husband Jason, Sarah Lynn Evans, Donald Joseph Colgan, Stefan Micheal Colgan, and Britni Nicole Colgan, Jamie Michelle Warren, and Melissa Sue Johnson.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Cremation was chosen. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 10, in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Pastor Nathan Sundt officiating. Visitation will be from noon until the service on Saturday at the mortuary.

Born Aug. 21, 1936, in Bedford, he was the son of Murl James and Thelma (Miller) Evans. He married Phyllis Diana Inman on June 19, 1959, and she survives.
He retired from the transportation department of Monroe County Schools. He had worked at Crulo Trucking and was a bus driver for the Fayetteville School. He was a charter member of the Fayetteville Community Lions Club
Survivors include his wife, Phyllis of Bedford; two daughters, Melissa ‘Missy’ King and husband Ron of Williams and Melinda ‘Mindy’ May and husband Brion of Fayetteville; two grandchildren, Andy King (Teresa) and Brittany Pruett (Louie); three great-grandchildren, Annason and Daxtyn King and Olyvia Pruett; a sister, Frances Antoinette ‘Tony’ Evans Fields; a brother, William ‘Bill’ Evans; eight nieces; and four nephews.

Ann was graduate of Indiana University with a B.S. in Elementary Education and an M.S. in Special Education.
Ann was co-owner of Yesterday’s Today Antiques with a booth in The Coop Antiques, Oviedo, Vintage Junkie, Rennigers, Mount Dora.
Ann was previously employed by Harry Warren, Inc., was a Broker at Coldwell Banker, Northeast Orlando Office and started her career as an elementary school teacher in Indianapolis.
In lieu of a memorial service, there will be a farewell celebration from 1-3 p.m. on Feb. 10, at the Country Club of Orlando.

Ezra Carroll Ashley, 84, of Orleans, passed away at 5:50 p.m. on Feb. 4, 2018, at Paoli Health and Living Community.
He was born Aug. 26, 1933, in Liberty, Kentucky, the son of Ezra F. and Ruth (Witt) Ashley. He married Rose Ellen (Brewer) Ashley on Jan. 2, 1953, and she preceded him in death.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and member of the Orleans American Legion Post No. 69. He was a member of the First Baptist Church.
He worked at Carpenter Body Works for 35 years and enjoyed farming. He was a handyman for the Orleans area.
He is survived by one son, Jerry Ashley of Orleans; one daughter, Linda Combs (Tim Noble) of Bedford; five grandchildren, Jeremy, Cory, Cody, Bill and Tiffany; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers, Gerald and Robert Ashley; and three sisters, Joaline Collier, Pauline Wilson and Theda Reel.
He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; and one brother, Harold.
The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 8, at the Ochs-Tetrick Funeral Home in Orleans with Pastor Steve Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Orleans with military rites conducted by the Orleans American Legion Post No. 69.

Steven Edward Hillenburg, 56, of Bedford died at 4:10 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 2, 2018, at the Brown County Health and Living Center.
Born March 17, 1961, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Charles and Barbara (Pruett) Hillenburg.
He had worked for the Lawrence County Highway Department. Steven was member of the New Union Christian Church, the Masonic Lodge No. 14 F&AM, and was a U.S. Army veteran serving from 1979 until 1983.
Survivors include his parents, Charles and Barbara Hillenburg of Bedford; a sister, Debbie Emmons of Bedford; one niece, Amanda Wright and her husband Chad of Bedford; one nephew, Michael Emmons and his wife Lorrie; and five great-nieces and nephews, Cody and Ellie Emmons, and Levi, Larissa, and Logan Wright.

Fred Huffman, 88, of Orleans, passed away Feb. 2, 2018, at Monroe County Hospital in Bloomington.
He was born March 28, 1929, in Flint, Michigan to Orval and Gladys (Maddox) Huffman.
Fred enjoyed his childhood in southern Indiana, graduating from Marengo High School in 1947, where he was a starting guard for the Marengo Cavemen.
In 1950, Fred married Jane Chastain. They were married for 51 years, until her death in 2001. He married Carolyn (Hayes) Burton in 2003.
Fred was a veteran, serving his country in Korea.
He graduated from Indiana State University in 1957, and had an enjoyable, fulfilling career in teaching and coaching in Howard County, Wabash and Mitchell.
Fred was a talented woodworker and made beautiful furniture for family and friends. An avid fisherman, Fred hosted a fish fry every summer. He was a loyal Chicago Cubs fan and loved to sing. He sang in the Orleans United Methodist Church choir for 40 years. Most of all, Fred loved spending time with his family.
Fred is survived by his wife, Carolyn; daughter, Sally (Keith) Schepers; daughter-in-law, Ann Huffman; grandchildren, Sara (Brad) Johnson, Ryne Huffman, Benjamin (Sarah) Schepers and Daniel Schepers; great-granddaughter, Emma Jane Johnson; brother, Orval (Sandy) Huffman; sister, Ruth (Shelby) Stevens; several nieces and nephews; three stepchildren, Gary (Diana) Burton, Dee Ann (Eric) Harmon, Bobette (John Howard) Lindley; ten step-grandchildren, 21 step-great-grandchildren; and one step-great-great-grandchild.
In addition to his wife Jane, Fred was preceded in death by his son, David Wesley Huffman, and a sister, Elnora Albin.
Celebration of Life services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 6, at the Orleans United Methodist Church, with Pastor Ed Fisher officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery. Military Rites will be conducted by the Orleans American Legion Post No. 69.

He was born at Blue Lick, Indiana, on April 1, 1931, to James Cephis & Dorothy E. (Callahan) Doane. He is retired from Wetterau Foods in Bloomington, IN.
The past 16 months were spent at White River Lodge in Bedford, Indiana.
On May 19, 1951, he married Phyllis A. (Baines) Doane. He pastored the Newark Baptist Church at Newark, Indiana, for 25 years.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and one brother.

Born July 11, 1936, in Brownstown, she was the daughter of James Willis and Effie Belle (Cogswell) Lindsey. She married Ronald Charles Peyton on July 26, 1975, and he preceded her in death Nov. 30, 2001.
Margaret retired from General Motors and was a member of UAW Local No. 440. She enjoyed camping, traveling, and collecting antiques.
Survivors include her daughters, Joni Lee Hargesheimer of Mitchell, Tamara Sebastian of Mitchell, and Jerri Lynn (Glen) Baker of Mitchell; longtime partner, Kenny Parsons of French Lick; and three grandsons and one great-grandson.

Clarice Isabell Hitchcock Mitchell was born 22 Sept., 1919 in Indian Springs, to Odes and Mary Ethel Faris Hitchcock. She became a member of the Indian Springs United Methodist Church in early life and years later moved her membership to the First United Methodist Church of Bedford.
She graduated from Trinity Springs High School, Central Normal College at Danville, and Indiana State University at Terre Haute.
She married Harold C. Mitchell in 1941, and he preceded her in death. They had celebrated their 50th anniversary in 1991. She was also preceded in death by a son, Michael Wayne Mitchell; a granddaughter, Carrie Mae Mitchell; a brother, Arnold Hitchcock; and a daughter-in-law, Donna (Embree) Mitchell.
Survivors include a son, Philip Harold Mitchell (Judy), of Bedford; and a daughter, Janice Mitchell Bedwell (Rex Dennis), of Carbon. Grandchildren include, Kim Mitchell Ray (Kyle) and Philip Scott Mitchell (Barbara) of Bedford, Thomas Wayne Mitchell (Corlan), Timothy Michael Mitchell (Tracy), Carol Marie Crum, and Troy Matthew Mitchell (Nicole) of Crawfordsville, and Kristen Bedwell Beasley (Martin) of Brazil. Great-grandchildren are, Michael Riley Watts (Kiley), Hope Crum, Faith Crum, Tyler Crum, Mae Mitchell, Molly Marie Mitchell, Matt Mitchell, and Kale Mitchell, all of Crawfordsville, Caleb Ray, Elijah Ray, Lauren Mitchell and Molly Clair Mitchell of Bedford, Kaitlyn Mitchell of Charleston, South Carolina, and Emma Grace Beasley of Brazil. Step-grandchildren are Greg Garr and Logan Bailey of Crawfordsville and Katie Fultz (Chris) and Kasey Fenstermaker of Fort Wayne. Great-great-granddaughter, Cora Fultz and step-great-great-grandson, Cobi Fenstermaker, of Fort Wayne also survive. She is also survived by nieces, Patsy Hitchcock Dye of Shoals and Norma Hitchcock Thrasher of Harrodsburg, a nephew, Edward Hitchcock of Bloomington, and many other relatives.
Mrs. Mitchell began her teaching career at Pea Ridge School in Martin County. She also taught at the Trinity Springs, school as well as elementary schools in Williams, Dugger, Shoals and Fayetteville.
Memberships have included the Indiana State Teachers Association, the First United Methodist Churches in Indian Springs and Bedford, the John Wallace Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Flinn, Guthrie, Speer family association.
She also volunteered at the Lawrence County Historical & Genealogical Museum. Her interests included traveling, reading, genealogy, quilting, crocheting, and working crossword puzzles.
The family would like to thank the staff at Bliss Place and Kindred Hospice for their care of her in her last illness.
Funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 5, in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Pastor Lee Brown officiating. Burial will follow in the Green Hill Cemetery.

Thurman retired from Essex in Orleans and was a member of Huron Baptist Church.
He was a U. S. Navy veteran of World War II.

Andrea Dawn (French) Rose, 51, passed away Sunday, Jan. 28, 2018, at Indiana University Health Bedford Hospital.
Born Dec. 24, 1966, in Evansville, she was the daughter of Gary French and Vicky Sue (Walker) Kenney. She married Joseph Dale Rose, April 2, 2014.
Andrea was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, and a 1985 graduate of Mitchell High School. She was one of Jehovah’s Witnesses, and very much enjoyed participating in the Ministry work with her fellow witnesses.
Andrea was a nurse for many years and loved reading, knitting and birdwatching.
Survivors include her husband, Joseph Dale Rose of Bedford; son, Jordan Christopher Walker Kilgore of Evansville; daughter, Brittany Nicole Adkins of Florida; and brother, Ryan French of Lafayette.
Her parents preceded her in death.

Ronald Warix, 60, of Williams, passed away at his home after a long battle with cancer on Jan. 19, 2018.
He was born in Jerseyville, Illinois on Aug. 11, 1957. He grew up in Jerseyville and attended Alton High School in Illinois. He moved to Indiana in 1986 to marry the love of his life.
Ron, or Ronnie, as he was known to his family and friends, is survived by his loving wife of 31 years, Deborah Warix; his four children, Terry Pittman of Mitchell, Heather Collins of Indianapolis, Amy Verdin of Alabama and Rhonda Davis of Texas, 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three sisters, Joanne Druland, Helen Stone and Brenda Day, all of Illinois; many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Horace and Ruby Warix; sister, Carlene Hartman; and two brothers, Sonny and Donnie Warix.
Ron was self employed and owned a franchise of Crawlspace Doctors for many years.
He found enjoyment in many things in life, most of all, his family. He loved the mountains in Tennessee, family gatherings, hunting, fishing, working in the yard, and taking long drives to enjoy outdoors. He genuinely enjoyed helping others, always lending a hand to anyone in need, and always with a smile on his face.
He fought so hard and for so long to overcome this terrible disease, up until his last moments on earth. There really are no words sufficient enough to describe what a great man he was, how much he was loved and adored, and how much he will be missed. He was truly one of the great ones, and his legacy will live on in all of us who loved him so very much.
A celebration of Ron’s life will be at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 3, at Tulip Street Christian Church in Mitchell. His family will receive guests from 2-3: p.m. at the church on Saturday.

Lois Marie (Nikirk) Andis, 87, of Denver, Colorado, went home to be with the Lord Jesus Christ on Jan. 23, 2018, at 1:24 a.m.
Born Sept. 26, 1930, in Lawrence County, Lois was the daughter of John and Lelah (Harvey) Nikirk. Lois worked in the United Airlines flight kitchen in Denver for 23 years and was a worldwide traveler, visiting many countries.
She is survived by her three daughters, Sherry Manning (Wayne) of Denver, Colorado, Vicki DelVecchio (Joe) of San Antonio, Texas, and Kelly Andis of Denver, Colorado. Lois also leaves behind two grandsons, Alex and Kyle DelVecchio of San Antonio, Texas; two brothers, Marshall Nikirk and wife Betty of Paducah, Kentucky, and Delvin Nikirk and wife Jeanette of Oolitic; three sisters, Dana O’Neal of Bedford, Warnetta Kirkman and husband Junior of Oolitic and Bonnie Noblitt and husband Chuck of Mitchell; brother-in-law, Joe Roberts of Needmore; and several nieces and nephews.
Lois was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Melvin Blayne Nikirk and Danny Nikirk; and four sisters, Wilma Henderson, Ada Bee Buher, Wanda Roberts, and Marjorie Henderson.
