August 27, 2007 Kinder – December 23, 1929 – August 26, 2007 Jess H. Kinder, 77, of 903 Lincoln Ave., Bedford, passed away at 10:30 pm on Sunday, August 26, 2007 at his residence after an illness with colon cancer. Born in Springville, IN on December 23, 1929, he was the son of Walter J. and Mabel M. (Kesler) Kinder. He married Phyllis Prow on February 28, 1954 at the First Christian Church in Bedford and she survives. Jess was the owner and operator of Kinder Tune-Up for over fifty years. He served on the Bedford City Council and Planning Commission for sixteen years. He was a member of the Bedford Masonic Lodge #14 F & AM and a member of the First Baptist Church in Bedford for over forty years where he had served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher. Jess loved his church very much. He served in the Indiana National Guard for ten years with the rank of Sergeant First Class. Jess graduated from Shawswick High School with the class of 1949. Surviving with his wife, Phyllis is one brother, Charles Kinder and his wife, Maxine of Indianapolis, IN; three sisters-in-law, Mary Kinder of Indianapolis, IN, Mary Elkins and Vicky Woody and her husband, Jon all of Bedford; two brothers-in-law, Dwight Prow and his wife, Cleda and Kenny Prow and his wife, Barbara all of Bedford; several nieces and nephews including his special caregivers, Larry and Connie Kinder. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Walter and Donald Kinder. Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 pm on Friday, August 31st at the First Baptist Church in Bedford with Dr. Kregg Burris officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery. Russell – March 9, 1915 – August 26, 2007 Walter E. “Russ” Russell, 92, a long time resident of Lawrence Co., IN, passed away at 3:20 am on Sunday, August 26, 2007 at the White River Lodge in Bedford. Born March 9, 1915 in Princeton, IN, he was the son of Bud and Martha (Powell) Russell. He married Wilma M. Block on June 2, 1935 and she survives. He was an electrician with NWSC CRANE retiring after thirty-two years in 1973. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving from 1934 to 1940. He then served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1945 during WW II in the S. Pacific. He was affiliated with the First Christian Church in Bedford. Survivors include his wife, Wilma, of Bedford; one son, Bob Russell and his wife, Leona of Mitchell; one daughter, Joann Teresi and her husband, Jim of Deerfield Beach, FL; three grandchildren, Terri Stump and her husband, John of Warsaw, IN, Rev. Kevin Phipps and his wife, Penny of Wooster, OH, Jeff Phipps of Columbus, OH; five great grandchildren; eight great great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Robert Russell; five sisters, Daisy French, Mary Wilson, Alice Schmidt, Jeanne Puumala and Dorothy Fulton. Jackson, 81, of Bedford, died at 1:40 pm on Wednesday, August 22, 2007 at the home of his daughter. Born January 26, 1926 in Martin Co., he was the son of William Mason and Schaustal (White) Jackson. He married Wilma Weaver on June 21, 1947 and she preceded him in death on December 17, 2003. He was a cable splicer and line gang worker for Indiana Bell for thirty-seven years retiring in 1983. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving with the Seabees. He was a member of Gillen Post #33 American Legion, Telephone Pioneers, Bedford Masonic Lodge #14 F & AM and the Shriners. He was of the Baptist faith. An avid gardener, Paul loved to share his produce with his friends at Hardee’s and all over town. Survivors include three daughters, Teresa June Tackett, Tonya Mullis and her husband, Jerry, Kathy Ritchison and her husband, Joe all of Bedford ; one sister, Phyllis Anderson of Bedford; seven grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one sister, Loretta Day; four brothers, Eura Thomas, Dira Cecil, William Eschol and Joseph Glen Jackson. Johnson, 79, passed away at 7:12 P.M. Saturday, August 18th at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on September 24, 1927 in Leavenworth, IN, she was the daughter of Roy Draper and Maude (Baker) Draper. She married Clinton Johnson and he preceded her in death in 1966. Born Sept. 15, 1915, in Bryantsville in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Fred E. and Chloe (Kern) Reuter. She married Pitser “Pete” Wray on Aug. 1, 1936, in Bedford, and he preceded her in death on June 1, 1989. She retired from the North Lawrence School Corporation after 25 years, 1956-1981, having taught second grade at Oolitic. She was a member of Popcorn Christian Church in Springville, a member of the Indiana Retired Teachers’ Association and the Lawrence County Retired Teachers’ Association. Survivors include two sons Charles Gary Wray and wife Rosemary of Oolitic and Lary W. Wray and wife Beverly; three daughters, Patty Jo Roberts and husband Joe of Bedford, Pamela Jane Thompson and husband Kenneth and Deborah J. Thompson and husband Howard, all of Springville; 17 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Don Reuter and wife Betty of Bedford; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Hayes — June 10, 1922 — Aug. 17, 2007 Dorothy June Hayes, 85, Bloomington died Friday. She was a Bedford native. Bedford, died at 5:20 p.m. Thursday, at Garden Villa in Bedford. Born May 25, 1916, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Frank V. and Lizzie (Now) Corps. He married Jean G. Robbins on Oct. 16, 1938, and she survives. He was in insurance sales, with Commonwealth Insurance Company, retiring in 1985; retired from GM Powertrain after 20 years; and worked as Fire Inspector for the City of Bedford for 12 years, 1986-1998. He was a graduate of Bedford High School with the class of 1934. He was a life-long member of the First Christian Church in Bedford, where he had been Sunday School Superintendent, Deacon and Elder; a member of the United Workers Sunday School Class for many years; coached Little League for several years; was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II; a member of American Legion Post No. 33; Bedford Elks No. 826; refereed high school basketball for many years; and also volunteered his referee talents to the Bedford Boys Club for many years. Surviving with his wife, Jean Robbins Corps of Bedford, are a daughter, Rebecca Jean Meadows and husband Jack of Bedford; two sons, Larry George Corps and wife Kelly of Bedford and Robin Dean Corps of San Jose, Calif.; seven grandchildren, Michelle Jean Root and husband Darren, Mellonie Jan Dixon, Amy Leigh Garrison, Michael John Corps, and Shane Larry Corps, all of Bedford, Landon Thomas Corps of Greene County and Lora Dawnelle Faubion and husband Jay of Heltonville; and nine great-grandchildren. Stewart — May 20, 1946 — Aug. 12, 2007 Joe Bill Stewart, 61, Solsberry, died at 1 a.m. Sunday at his residence. He was a self-employed carpenter, a volunteer firefighter and a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War. Survivors include four children, Dianna Matykunas, Jacksonville, Fla., Vicki Phipps and Dennis Stewart, both of Bedford, and Joe Bill Stewart II, Shelbyville; one sister, Jacqueline Cook, Bloomington; one brother, Robert Stewart, Smithville; several grandchildren; and two nieces. August 17, 2007 McCart — Sept. 22, 1922 — Aug. 16, 2007 PLAINFIELD — James Eugene McCart, 84, Plainfield, passed away Thursday. He was born on Sept. 22, 1922, in Mitchell, the son of the late Chester and Naomi McCart. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. James received his college degree from Olivet University and his master’s from Butler University He retired in 1991 from the Indiana Department of Correction. During his career he was the assistant commissioner and commissioner in charge of construction at the Indiana Youth Center as well as the Rockville and Pendleton facilities. He was also the superintendent of the Indiana Youth Center and the Indiana Boys School. Survivors include his wife, Rosemary (Sheeks) McCart; a son, James David McCart; a daughter, Jill Hutchens; four grandchildren, James McCart, Robin Brown, and Darrick and Kristin Hutchens. Warren St., Mitchell, passed away at 4:50 p.m. Tuesday at White River Lodge in Bedford. Born April 11, 1920, in Joliet, Ill., he was the son of Albert and Violet (Neideffer) Hoggatt. He married Evelyn Scott on Aug. 13, 1938. He retired from Lehigh Portland Cement Company in 1982 with 36 years of service. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, received an EAME ribbon with two bronze stars and a Purple Heart. He was a member of Cecil C. Martin American Legion Post No. 250. Johnson — July 3, 1927 — Aug. 13, 2007 Charles David “Bud” Johnson, 80, 1526 13th Street, Bedford, died Aug. 13 at Bloomington Hospital. Born July 3, 1927, his parents were the late Charles D. and Margaret Ferguson Johnson. He married Ann Jones of Loogootee on March 18, 1976, and she survives. A Navy veteran of World War II Johnson spent the bulk of his civilian career, working in some phase of radio and television. He was among the first employees of the local Bedford station WBIW and was producer, director and voice-over talent for television and radio stations in Evansville and Terre Haute, as well as in Knoxville, Tenn. Following the radio/TV career, he returned to Bedford to live for the rest of his life at the 13th Street residence. The “bungalow” had been originally purchased by his own father before marrying young Margaret and became the lifetime home for each member of the little family. He was the public affairs officer for the then Naval Ammunition Depot and later Naval Weapons Support Center at Crane for some 15 years, and was particularly active in orchestrating the many large and gala events which marked the nation’s Bicentennial Year in 1976. During semi-retirement he provided free-lance voice-over recordings and video services for both commercial and personal clients. Johnson was a long-time active participant in the Little Theatre of Bedford both on and off stage, serving three terms as president and two as treasurer. He was particularly active in lighting duties during the time the new Little Theatre was conceived and constructed. He first appeared on stage in 1967 when “Another Part of the Forest” was produced in the old theatre building. His most acclaimed and probably favorite role was as Oscar in “The Odd Couple,” performed both in the original Bedford Little Theatre before it burned and again in the new Little Theatre on Brian Lane Way. When the original 1968 performance was reprised in 1987, he announced that it was to be his “swan song” appearance on stage. However, he was persuaded to return to the stage once more in 1996 to appear with several theatre friends in “The White House.” Johnson served on the Indiana Film Commission during the time that the award-winning film “Hoosiers” was produced. He assisted in scouting locations for the movie and was among the commission members publicly recognized at the premier presentation events in Indianapolis. At just 10 years of age Johnson lost his father in an automobile accident. His mother, then a young widow, made a living for herself and the young son as city clerk-treasurer of Bedford for many years. After service in the Navy Johnson attended broadcasting school in Washington, D.C., often assisted by the then Senator Bill Jenner of Bedford, who later became his neighbor, friend and sometimes mentor. He was one of the caregivers for his mother during her long illness until her death in 1965. For many years thereafter, he was caregiver for his grandmother, the late Caroline Ferguson, and his aunt, the late Zuliene Johnson, both lifetime residents of Bedford, as well as for his wife during a few medical issues. He was a good friend and a sort of personal assistant for many elderly friends now themselves deceased. These experiences made him particularly appreciative of the type of friendly, loving and competent care he himself received from Dr. Deborah Craton and all those on her staff. John enjoyed some leisure travel, particularly when it included the companionship of his late uncle and aunt, Bill and Dorothy Ferguson of Michigan, or his cousins, Jon and Alan and Daisy Ferguson, his only remaining relatives. He liked to “meet for tea” briefly with his long-time friend, Bill Elliott, and other old friends, but he enjoyed most just being at home with a succession of pet cats and his wife (if she didn’t talk too much) and keeping an eye on the stock market. His friends at Little Theatre will remember his often used plaint at rehearsals, “I want to go home and put on my jammies!” Now he has, figuratively at least, gone home and put on his jammies. Radio listeners may remember his originating the “Bed Fed ‘Nuf Said” tag line in a local ad spot. It was Johnson’s frequently used catchphrase for many occasions. He was the last of his Johnson family. If desired, memorial bequests are suggested for the Bedford Little Theatre or for the St. Vincent de Paul Society general fund. ‘Nuf said. Born Oct. 28, 1941, in Mitchell, she was the daughter of Wilbur Gene and Mildred Maria (Little) McCoy. She was a graduate of Mitchell High School and the New Albany Beauty College. She was a beautician operating several beauty shops in Mitchell and in South Dakota and Missouri. She recently helped at the Older Americans Center in Mitchell. Feathers — June 17, 1970 — Aug. 12, 2007 Richard Eugene “Richie” Feathers, 37, Kentucky Hollow Road, Bedford, and lifelong resident of Bedford, died at 7:35 p.m. Sunday at Bloomington Hospital. Born June 17, 1970, in Bedford, he was the son of John Henry Feathers and Barbara Ellen (Tillette) Robertson. He married Debbie Christensen on Dec. 26, 1987, in Bedford, and she survives. He was a laborer in the construction industry and was a member of Union Local No. 741. He was a member of the Bedford North Lawrence High School class of 1987. She and her husband purchased and operated North End Paint, Paper, Hardware & Toy Store, which evolved into North End Video, Broadview Video and North End Tanning. August 1, 2007 Morgan — Paul Deleal Morgan, 88, 2110 Park Ave., Bedford, passed away at 6:43 p.m. Tuesday at Garden Villa in Bedford following a nine-month illness. Born Sept. 29, 1918, in Dubois County, he was the son of Thomas and Mae (Seybold) Morgan. He married Marie Beatty on Dec. 18, 1937, and she died on March 28, 2001. He was a sub-station operator for Public Service Indiana first in West Baden, from 1943 until 1949 then in Bedford until his retirement in 1980. His interests included hunting, fishing and gardening. He was a veteran of World War II serving with the U.S. Army and a member of the Free Methodist Church. Survivors include three sons: Paul E. Morgan of Hobe Sound, Fla., David F. Morgan and wife Barbara of Jupiter, Fla., and Clark Morgan and wife Angela of Bedford; two daughters: Judy Kellams and husband Bill, and Lana Morgan of Bedford; one sister, Patsy Qualkenbush of French Lick; 11 grandchildren: Paula Fuller and husband Neil, Susan Morgan, Scott Morgan and wife Valerie, and Paul Morgan, all of Florida, Charles Morgan of Bedford, Marnie LaFever and husband Doug of Mitchell, Debra Kellams and husband Doug, Darlene Hauer and husband Thomas, David Lewis and wife Julie, all of Bedford, Darin Voorhies and wife Gigi and Derek Voorhies, all of Bloomington; great-grandchildren: Paul Hadley, Stephanie Morgan, Angela Fuller, Thomas Fuller, Scott Morgan, Brian Morgan, Natalie Morgan, Sarah Morgan, Conner Morgan, Josie LaFever, Luke LaFever, Brittany Kellams, Amanda Koshinski and husband Corey, Thomas Hauer, Holly Staggs and husband Andy, David Lewis, Dillion Lewis and Daulton Lewis; and two great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie; parents; three brothers: Samuel, Dennis and James Morgan; five sisters: Ivabel Morgan, Hazel Dalton, Opal Phillips, Mary McCance and Jewell Wininger; and one granddaughter, Lisa Morgan. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday from the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Pastor Dave Colgan officiating. Burial will follow in the Green Hill Cemetery.
