12/31/99 Herod – Margaret (Kocsis) Herod of Bedford, IN, died Friday, December 31, 1999, at Bedford Regional Medical Center. Born in Himm, Austria, on November 1, 1907, she was the daughter of Vincent and Maria Kocsis. She married John Herod in Detroit, MI, in 1924, and he died on September 22, 1980. Surviving are one daughter, Loretta Erdman of Bedford; two sons: Richard Herod of Spencer, IN, and John Herod Jr. of South Bend, IN; one sister, Ethel Scolere of South Bend, IN, nine grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, Dolores Fortner, and one sister, Elizabeth Kocsis. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. Services for Margaret (Kocsis) Herod will be at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 4, in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Father Bernie Cox and Sister Joan Luerman officiating. Sego of Bedford, IN, died Friday, December 31, at his residence. Born on July 27, 1913, he was the son of Jeremiah and Maude (Bennett) Sego. He married Edith Fisher in 1935, and she preceded him in death. Surviving are two sons: Jerry and Larry Sego, both of Bedford; one brother, Jerry Sego, Jr. of Orlando, FL; two sisters, Alice Fortner and Shirley Gilstrap, both of Bedford; four grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and several brothers. He was retired from Triangle & Leahy in Bedford, where he was a sheet metal worker. He was a member of American Legion Gillen Post #33 in Bedford, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy. Private family services will be conducted at a later date with cremation to follow. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are under the direction of The Day & Carter Mortuary. Veal – Marjorie A. Veal of Ocala, FL, formerly of Bedford, IN, died Friday, December 31, 1999, at her residence. Born on May 28, 1915, in Seymour, IN, she was the daughter of Homer M. and Angie (Dobbs) Coombs. She married Raymond Veal, and he died October 3, 1997. Surviving are one son, James Veal of Bedford, IN; one daughter, Patricia Spinks of Florida; four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson. She had been an assembly operator at RCA in Bloomington, and was a member of the Central Church of Christ and Order of the Eastern Star. Services for Marjorie Veal will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, January 6th, at the Day & Carter Mortuary with David Welch officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery. Horan of Bedford, IN, died Thursday, December 30, 1999, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on June 20, 1924, in Tipton, IN, he was the son of Charles and Dorothy (Moorman) Horan. He married Ruth Euler on May 12, 1948, and she survives. Also surviving are four sons: Mike Horan of Richmond, IN; Tim, Kevin, and Chris Horan all of New Castle, IN; two daughters: Patia Tolle of Homerville, GA, andMichele Bohling of Bedford; one sister, Marilyn Horan of Millhousen, IN; two brothers: Edwin Horan of Booneville, NC, and Robert Horan of Mt. Ulla, NC; fourteen grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers: James and Justin Horan. He was retired from Public Service Indiana in Bedford and New Castle. He was a member of St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus. Services for Francis W. Horan will be at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, January 3, at St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church with Father Bernie Cox officiating. Graveside committal services will be at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, January 3, at Immaculate Conception in Millhousen, IN. Bex – Avis Diane (Reynolds) Bex of Mitchell, IN, died Thursday, December 30, at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, IN. Born on February 23, 1944, she was the daughter of Forrest and Violet (Turpin) Pierce and Carroll Reynolds. She married Arnold Lee Bex on November 8, 1959 in Bedford at Grace United Methodist Church, and he survives. Also surviving are her step-father, Forrest Pierce of Williams; four daughters: Angela Kauffman of Vail, AZ, Tina Pensinger of Galion, OH, Shelley Silcott of Bedford, and Lana Craig of Bedford; and eleven grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents. She worked at Hoosier Uplands/Head Start in the Mitchell, Orleans, Paoli area. She attended Fairview Church of Christ. Spinks of Bedford, IN, died Monday, December 27, 1999, at the Bloomington Hospital in Bloomington, IN. Born on June 7, 1928, in Mitchell, IN, she was the daughter of Earl and Lucille (White) Cox. She married Sam Spinks. Surviving are her mother, Lucille Cox of Bedford; one daughter, Becky Hedge of Bedford; two sons, Scott Spinks of Williams, IN, and Brian Spinks of Bedford; three granddaughters and one great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her father, one brother, and one sister. She was retired from Dunn Hospital where she was a nurse's aide for 25 years. She attended Englewood Baptist Church. Born on March 23, 1913, in Martin County, IN, she was the daughter of Chris and Ida (Self) Colling. She married Preston Pete Abels on October 22, 1930, and he died September 4, 1982. Surviving are four daughters: Alice Farris and Joy Sterns, both of Florida, Kay Pruett of Williams, IN, and Kathy Cornwell of California; eight sons: Ralph Abels of Florida, Larry Abels of Kentucky, Bill Abels of Owensburg, IN, Terry Abels of Harrodsburg, IN; Robert Abels of Need more, IN, Max Abels of Tunnelton, IN, Garret and Dave Abels, both of Williams, IN; one brother, Dale Collins of French Lick, IN; two sisters, Ruth Byers of Hillham, IN, and Mildred Pridemore of Shoals, IN; thirty-five grandchildren, forty-three great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one son, Eugene Abels; two brothers, Cleo and Don Collins; and one sister, Barbara Helton. She was a retired factory worker at M.Fine & Sons, and was a member of the Shiloh Christian Fellowship. Meadows of Bedford, IN, died Sunday, December 26, 1999, at Bloomington Hospital. Born on May 1, 1920, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of Robert E. and Isabell (Helton) Meadows. He married Mildred Viers on November 11, 1949, in Lawrence County, IN, and she survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Sharon Flinn of Bedford, IN, and Linda Enochs of Bloomington, IN; one brother, Randolph Meadows of Bedford, IN; four grandchildren, and one great-grandson. He was preceded in death by five brothers, one sister, and one son, Larry Dean Meadows in infancy. He retired from G.M. Powertrain after forty-one years of service. He was a member of the U.A.W. and Club 55 Bowling League at Broadview Bowl. There will be a graveside service for Wilburn Meadows at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 29th, at Beech Grove Cemetery. Born on November 22, 1921, in Bedford, IN, she was the daughter of William H. and Della Mae (Clark) Sons. She married James E. Poole on February 24, 1940, and he died July 13, 1976. Surviving are one brother, Robert Sons of Bedford, IN. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Claude W. and David Sons, and one sister, Margaret Lane. Long of Indianapolis, IN, formerly of Williams, IN, died Saturday, December 25, 1999, at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis. Born on July 27, 1919, in Kentucky, she was the daughter of Flody and Lizza (Burns) Wade. She married Jasper Long on October 26, 1945, and he died on April 11, 1995. Surviving are two sons, Donald and Lonnie Joe Long, both of Indianapolis, IN; two daughters, Brenda Lynn and Annie Hardwick, both of Indianapolis; one sister, Pearl Ford of Greenwood, IN; eight grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Jasper Jimmy Long, in infancy; four brothers, Jim Lonnie, Roy, and Toy Wade; and one grandchildren, Estel Lynn. She was a restaurant cook and a homemaker and attended the Church of God in Indianapolis. Services for Velma Long will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 29th, at the Day & Carter Mortuary. Born on July 13, 1932, in Winchester, KY, he was the son of Pleas and Jannie (Ginter ) Abner. He married Helen Beasley on September 7, 1952, and she survives. Also surviving are three daughters, Janie Bedingham of Madison, IN, Mary Ann Ault of Medora, IN, and Sharon Ingle of Bedford, IN; one son, Les Abner of Bedford, IN; his mother, Jannie Abner of Medora, IN; six brothers: John Abner of Clifford, IN, Boyd Abner of Columbus, IN, Harold Abner of Bedford, IN, Ernest Abner of Madison, IN; Paul Abner of Lumberton, NC, and David Abner of Norman, IN; six sisters: Lida J. Robertson of Bedford, IN, Mary Lou Sharer of Columbus, IN, Sally Stephens of Brownstown, IN, Patty Nelson of Lawrence , KS, Carolyn Thompson and Renotta Wilcox, both of Bedford, IN; twenty-two grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father; three brothers, Raymond, Woody, and Thomas Dewey Abner; and one son, "Red" Abner in, 1997. He was branch manager at Skelgas for twenty-nine years. He worked for Farm Bureau Co-Op in Mitchell and at the Lawrence County Compactor site. He retired in 1999. He was a 1952 graduate of Medora High School. He attended Englewood Baptist Church and was a member of Cedar Lodge # 161 F&AM Leesville, the York Rite in Bedford, the Murat Temple in Indianapolis, the Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis, and the La-Or-Ma Shrine Club. Potter of Bedford, IN, died Friday December 24, 1999, at the Hospitality House. Born on June 12, 1906, in Bedford, IN, he was the son of Flavius and Grace (Lemon) Potter. He married Louise (Babe) McDaniel Bush on June 3, 1949, and she died April 30, 1991. Surviving are his caregiver, Gay Potter Turner of Bedford, IN; one step-son, Bob Bush of Clarksville, IN; three step-grandchildren, and seven step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one sister, Nadine Gill; two brothers, John and Robert Potter; and one son, Don Potter, in infancy. He retired as a limestone worker at Heltonville Limestone Company. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Navy and was a member of the Gillen Post # 33 American Legion, Bedford Lodge #14 F&AM, and the Laborers Union with the Limestone Industry. Born on February 19, 1922, in Bicknell, IN, she was the daughter of James and Mary Reid (Wilson) Reynolds. She married Maurice Hatfield Boruff on June 9, 1942, and he preceded her in death. Surviving are three sons: Steven Boruff of Bloomington, IN, Ronnie Boruff of Bedford, IN, and Jeff Boruff of Brownsburg, IN; one brother, Bill Hirth of Springville, IN; five grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, and one grandchild. She was a retired nurses technician and worked at the Bedford Regional Medical Center. Surviving are three sons: Preston Byrd, Roy Hall, and Billy D. Hall, all of Bedford, IN; one daughter, Fannie Hall of Bedford, IN; and several grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. She was preceded in death by one son, James T. Byrd. She was a homemaker and a member of the Old Union Christian Church in Fayetteville. Born on May 28, 1926, in Bedford, IN, she was the daughter of Robert and Dora Mae (Mears) Faubion. She married William H. Brown on December 15, 1943, in Oklahoma City, and he survives. Also surviving are one son, William Robert Brown of Bedford, IN; one daughter, Donna Lee Flick of Bedford, IN; six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, James Brown; and two brothers, Charles and Jimmy Faubion. She was a homemaker and a member of Wesley Chapel Church. Born on June 7, 1909, in Brown County, IN, he was the son of Charles I. and Mary Ann (Castor) Stephenson. He married Helen L. Durbin in 1937, and she died January 21, 1985. Surviving are two sons, Louis E. and Lowell D. Stephenson, both of Bedford, IN; one step-sister, Mary Burris of Ludington, MI; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one daughter in infancy; a twin sister, Pearl C. Dugger; and two brothers, Paul I. and Claude Stephenson. He retired from General Motors Powertrain (Central Foundry) and was a member of the United Auto Workers Local 440. He assisted with the public canvass when North Lawrence Water Service originated. Born on April 26, 1929, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of Stanley and Goldie Emma (Henderson) Clark. He married Effie Lorene Henderson on March 7, 1959, and she survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Paul Henderson of Freetown, IN, and Beth Conrad of Bedford, IN; two sisters, Mary Kelley of Bedford, IN, and Betty White of Bloomington, IN; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Gerald, Bob, John and Jim Clark; and two sisters in infancy. He retired from General Motors Powertrain with 34 years of service and was a U.S. Marine veteran of the Korean War. He was of Pentecostal faith. Hoffman of Bedford, IN, died Monday, December 20, 1999, at his residence. Born on March 11, 1938, in Loogootee, IN, he was the son of Herbert and Marie (Schwindt) Hoffman. Surviving are his mother of Bedford, IN; one brother, Stephen Hoffman of Shoals, IN; and two sisters, Wilma Wampler and Mary Fulford, both of Bloomington, IN. He was preceded in death by his father and one brother, James Hoffman. In 1991 he retired as a general maintenance worker for Jefferson Trucking in Shoals and was a member of the Teamsters Union No. 135. He was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church. Born on December 14, 1928, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Edgar and Mabel (Wigley) Cleveland. She married John G. LaGree on November 14, 1947, and he preceded her in death. Surviving are two brothers, John Robert and Michael Paul Cleveland, both of Indianapolis; and one sister, Wilma Ruth Fielder of Hillsboro, IN; She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters. Nilson – Edith Nilson of Bedford, IN, died Monday, December 20, 1999, at the Bedford Regional Medical Center. Born on October 21, 1909, in Heltonville, IN, she was the daughter of Howard and Anna (Helton) Tanksley. She married Roy Nilson on May 18, 1928, and he died August 2, 1967. Surviving are two sons, William A. Nilson of Kokomo, IN, and Edward F. Nilson of Bedford, IN; one brother, Norval Tanksley of Indianapolis; four sisters: Evelyn Turpen and June Wilcoxsen, both of Indianapolis, Josephine Byers of Heltonville, IN, and Elma Olivera of California; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by one son, John Philip Nilson, and two brothers, Norton and Norman Tanksley. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Christian Church of Heltonville. Crowe of Bedford, IN, formerly of Indianapolis, died Sunday, December 19, 1999, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on April 17, 1922, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Vollie Edward and Ocie Louise (Tucker) Charles. She married Robert V. Crowe in July, 1952, and he died in 1991. Surviving are two brothers, Vollie Edward "Ed" Charles of Oolitic, IN, and Ferrell "Buck" Charles of Bedford, IN. She was preceded in death by one step-daughter, Margaret Lucille Crowe, and one sister, Doris Magnus. She was a retired claims clerk for American States Insurance Co in Indianapolis and was a member of the Eastern Star of Indianapolis. She was of Protestant faith. Born on March 31, 1948, in Bedford, IN, he was the son of Fred and Thelma (Cummings) Fish. His wife, Kay Fish survives. Also surviving are one son, Clint Fish of Bloomington, IN; three daughters: Christy Siville of Bloomington, IN, Tonya Bunch of Mitchell, IN, and Tammy Martindale of Bedford, IN; his mother, Thelma Breedlove of Norman, IN; one sister, Susie Bailey of Heltonville, IN; two brothers, David Fish of Bedford, IN, and Alfred Fish of Columbus, IN; and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father. He was employed at General Electric and was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, the Bedford Lodge No. 14 F&AM, and Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis. He was active in buying and renting property and was an avid collector of antique toys. He was of Protestant faith. Sons of Bedford, IN, died Saturday, December 18, 1999, at her residence. Born on October 31, 1935, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Pat and Grace (Rodgers) Conley. She married Robert Harold Sons, and he survives. Also surviving are four sisters: Peggy Ritchison, Hattie Armstrong, Hallie Coulter, and Connie Crosby, all of Bedford, IN; one brother, Ed McCain of West Terre Haute, IN; and several nieces and nephews. Born on October 15, 1936, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Roy M. and Flossie May (Hunsucker) Louden. She married Donald E. McBride on September 4, 1954, and he survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Debra Crane of Bedford, IN, and Deanna Cessna of Mitchell, IN; one son, Daniel McBride of Bedford, IN; three sisters: Phyllis Fish and Wilma Tincher, both of Bedford, IN, and Louise Bariaeu of South Bend, IN five grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Mary Belle Stanfield and Elwanda Moore. She was a homemaker, a seamstress, and had worked for M.Fine & Sons. She was a member of the Davis Memorial Church of the Nazarene, where she had taught Sunday school for more than 35 years. Bex of Mitchell, IN died Wednesday, December 15, 1999, at the Mitchell Manor Living and Rehab Center. Born on March 25, 1911, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of John and Etta (Dorsett) Bex. He married Ruth Merry on August 8, 1930, and she died March 4, 1962. He married Naomi (Russell) Gilbert on March 17, 1964, and she survives. Also surviving are one daughter, Frances Hensley of Mitchell, IN; two step-sons, Michael Gilbert of Shreveport, LA, and Terry Gilbert of Chicago, IL; four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by an infant son and dau Jimmy and Timothy Crane, both of Bedford, IN, and Russell Crane of Washington state; three sisters: LeeAnn Mears of Bloomington IN, LaDonna Crane and Lisa Wilcoxen, both of Bedford, IN. Born on April 16, 1904, in Yellowstone, Monroe County, IN, she was the daughter of Rayburn and Phoebe Adeline (Browning) Reed. She married Frank A. Ikerd on September 19, 1925, at Jeffersonville, Clark County, IN, and he died January 20, 1967. Surviving are several grand nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Mabel Ikerd, on September 14, 1931; her sister, Joy, in 1911; brother, Olin, in 1912; and half-brother, Paul Reed. She was a farmer and a homemaker. Surviving are one daughter, Monta Maddox of Bedford, IN; five sisters: Izillah Bush, Nona Haley, Kathryn Wade, and Virginia Bennett, all of Buddha, IN, and Barbara Sallee of Bedford, IN; three grandsons and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, and one brother. She retired from General Motors Powertrain in 1974 and was a member of Tunnelton United Methodist Church and United Auto Workers Local 440. He had worked for the Army Corps of Engineers and was a member of the Bedford First Christian Church, the Masonic Lodge, and the American Legion. Garrison of Mitchell, IN, died Monday, December 6, 1999, at the Bedford Regional Medical Center. Born on October 17, 1917, in Salem, IN, he was the son of James B. and Arie Emily (Speer) Garrison. He married Helen Marie Batchelor on July 17, 1943, and she survives. Also surviving are two sons, Shirley James Garrison of Mesa, AZ, and Jerry Lee Garrison of Columbus, IN; one daughter, Brenda Sue Melvin of Bedford, IN; one sister, Emily Cecil of Mitchell, IN; one half-brother, Marvin Joe Garrison of Orleans, IN; one half-sister, Janet Shaff of Bedford, IN; seven grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and six step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert, Wallace, and William Garrison. He retired from Central Foundry (GM Powertrain) in 1977, and was also a retired farmer. A World War II Army veteran, he was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Limestone Post No. 1686, Oolitic, and a member of the Cecil C. Martin American Legion Post No. 250, Mitchell. He then married Carolyn Ann Pruett on May 10, 1986, in Rosenburg, TX, and she survives. Also surviving are three sons: Timothy Wayne and William Russell Mundy, both of Bedford, IN, and Michael Scott Mundy of Bloomington, IN; two daughters, Teresa Mundy and Vickie Hutchinson, both of Bedford, IN; three step-sons: Gary Pruett of Houston, TX, Scott and Sam Pruett, both of Bedford, IN; one step-daughter, Sheryl Cooke of Tegucigalpa, Honduras; two brothers, Gordon Mundy of Brookville, IN, and Dale Mundy of Bedford, IN; three sisters: Betty Slate and Carol Duncan, both of Bedford, IN, and Phyllis Wildman of Indianapolis; six grandson, and ten step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and one sister. He was a self-employed auto body specialist for forty-five years and had worked at Bedford Auto. He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister. He retired from the Naval Surface Warfare Center-Crane and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Orleans. Ritchison of San Diego, CA, formerly of Bedford, IN, died Thursday, December 2, 1999 in San Diego. Born on February 14, 1921, in Bedford, IN, he was the son of Bernie and Molly (Chaney) Ritchison. He married Dorothy Helen Clouse on February 6, 1946, and she preceded him in death. Surviving are one son, Ric Ritchison of Indianapolis; two sisters, Virginia Pace and Wilma Hatfield, both of Bedford, IN; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Ronald Ritchison, and five brothers and sisters. He had been a cook at Spring Mill Inn and head chef at the Tudor Room at Indiana University. After retirement he was an assistant manager for HUD Housing Project in San Diego. He was a World War II Army veteran and a member of the American Legion Gillen Post 33. There will be graveside services for Robert Ritchison at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 18th, at Lawrenceport Cemetery with Mark Bechtel officiating. He was preceded in death by his wife; one son, Norman Chastain; one daughter, Mary Lois Whalin; and two sisters, Laverne Reynolds and Naomi Kearby. He retired from Indiana Limestone Company, and was a member of the Lawrenceport United Methodist Church.
