11/29/99

Slaughter – Violet L. Slaughter of Springville, IN, formerly of Mitchell, IN, died Monday, November 29, 1999, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on November 15, 1925, in Mitchell, IN, she was the daughter of John and Grace Jane (Barnes) Wynn. She married Edward V. Slaughter on September 15, 1944, and he died August 4, 1989.

Surviving are two sons, John Edward Slaughter of Mitchell, IN, and Jeff Slaughter of Springville, IN; two daughters, Jane Brewer and Joyce Slaughter, both of Springville, IN; two sisters, Ruth Miller of Spokane, WA, and Juanita Watson of Bedford, IN; two brothers, Bernie Wynn of Phoenix, AZ, and Norman "Sonny" Wynn of Dale, IN; six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

She was a homemaker.

Services for Violet Slaughter will be at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 1st, at the Chastain Funeral Home with the Rev. Wendell Phillips officiating. Burial will follow in Talbott Cemetery. Sorrells – Ruth Sorrells of Mitchell, IN, died Monday, November 29, 1999, at the Bedford Regional Medical Center. Born on February 12, 1910, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Charles A. and Sarah (Beavers) King. She married Noble Sorrells on June 20, 1931, and he died May 21, 1992.

Surviving are one son, Charles R. Sorrells of Mitchell, IN; one daughter, Mona Kay Robbins of Westport, IN; one sister, Nola Miller of Mitchell, IN; ten grandchildren; twenty-five great-grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by six sisters: Josephine King, Bessie Chapman, Cecile Grissom, Grace Massey, Ufa Doane, and Delpha Kinger; and three brothers: Odis, Ralph, and Hillard King.

She had been employed in the cafeteria at Riley School and was a member of the Tulip Street Christian Church.

Services for Ruth Sorrells will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, December 2nd, at the Chastain Funeral Home with Bro. Eugene Pruett officiating. Burial will be in Huron Cemetery. Friends may call from 4:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday and from 10 a.m. until the service Thursday.

Allen – Arthur V. Allen of Mitchell, IN, died Saturday, November 27, 1999, at the Bedford Regional Medical Center. Born on April 24, 1916, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of Frank and Mariah (Moffatt) Allen. He married Mildred Mann and she died January 8, 1992. He married Ethel M. Kirk on May 2, 1995, and she survives.

Also surviving are one son, Michael A. Allen of Las Cruces, NM; four step-sons: Denny, Larry and Dean Kirk, all of Mitchell, IN, and Gene Kirk of Fayetteville, IN; three step-daughters: Colleen Arnold of Mitchell, IN, Geneva Voorhies of Salem, IN, and Gaye Bex of Indianapolis; two brothers, Lester Allen of Mitchell, IN, and Homer Allen of Peru, IN; three sisters: Lola Mae Quinn of Mitchell, IN, Faustina Worsham of DeLand, FL, and Sara Jane Evans of Indianapolis; twenty-one grandchildren, thirty-one great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Ronnie Allen; three sisters, Maude Watterson, Roxie Williams, and Ruby Marshall; four brothers: Harry, Ray, George, and Harold Allen.

After retiring from Ingersoll Steel in New Castle with forty years of service, he was then employed by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. He was a member of the Mitchell Church of Christ.

Services for Arthur Allen will be at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 30th, at the Chastain Funeral Home with Bro. Allen Burris officiating. Burial will follow in Knott Cemetery. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Monday and from 10 a.m. until the service time Tuesday at the funeral home.

Mitchell – Eunice Alma Mitchell of Clarksville, IN, formerly of Mitchell, IN, died Saturday, November 27, 1999, at Willowbrook Manor in Clarksville. Born on June 17, 1913, in Casey County, KY, she was the daughter of Richard and Cornelia (Goode) Foley. She married Emanuel Mitchell on October 13, 1936, and he died October 22, 1991.

Surviving are one son, Buddy Glen Mitchell of Mitchell, IN; two daughters, Connie Root of Mitchell, IN, and Rita Rudd of North Carolina; one brother, Roy Foley of Illinois; two grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother and six sisters.

She was a homemaker and of Baptist faith.

There will be graveside services for Eunice Mitchell at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 1st, at the Lawrenceport Cemetery with the Rev. Stephen Jones officiating. Friends may call from 9-10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Haverly Mortuary. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lawrence County Mental Health Association.

Burnette – E. Ilene Burnette of Mitchell, IN, died Thursday, November 25, 1999, at Vencor Hospital in Greenwood, IN. Born on July 21, 1922, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Freed and Mary (Millard) Starr. She married Theodore Burnett on May 2, 1942, and he died on October 15, 1988.

Surviving are one daughter, Judy Erdmann of Scottsburg, IN; one son, Doug Burnette of Columbus, IN; one brother, James Starr, Jr. of Bedford, IN; three sisters: Bernice Henderson and Barbara Poole, both of Mitchell, IN, and Carma Nash of Alabama; six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by one brother, Opal Starr, and one sister, Ruth Allen.

She had worked at M.Fine & Sons. She was a member of the White River Baptist Church and attended the Mitchell First Baptist Church.

Services for Ilene Burnette will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, November 28th, at the Day & Carter Mortuary with the Rev. Raymond Bunn officiating. Burial will follow in Leatherwood Cemetery. Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Saturday at the Day & Carter Mortuary.

Gregory – Eugene Gregory of Springville, IN, died Thursday, November 25, 1999, at Bloomington Hospital. Born on April 17, 1942, in Clay County, KY, he was the son of George and Dorothy (Root) Gregory. He married Linda Ashcraft on June 22, 1962, and she survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Sherri Gregory Crouch of Indianapolis; two brothers, Harold Gregory of Oolitic, IN, and Stanley Gregory of Bedford, IN; and one granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his parents.

He was a retired tool and die make at General Motors Powertrain and was a member of the United Auto Workers Local No. 440.

Services for Eugene Gregory will be at 1:00 p.m. Monday, November 29th, at the Day & Carter Mortuary with the Rev. J.D. Pickett officiating. Burial will follow in Cresthaven Memory Gardens Mausoleum. Jean – William H. Jean of Bedford, IN, died Thursday, November 25, 1999, at Vencor Hospital in Indianapolis. Born on August 28, 1918, in Mitchell, IN, he was the son of Charles and Carrie (Goldsmith) Jean. He married Mildred Emery on September 23, 1938, and she died June 1, 1991.

Surviving are three daughters: Rebecca Ann Shields of Bloomington, IN, Darlene Kay Jean of Indianapolis, and Beverly Sue Morrow of Bedford, IN; three brothers: Harold Jean of Bloomington, IN, Roscoe and Hugh Jean, both of Mitchell, IN; two sisters, Pauline Saylor of Beech Grove, IN, and Thelma Reynolds of Bedford, IN; thirteen grandchildren, thirty-two great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Ed Jean, and one sister, Lorene Stevens.

He was custodian for Eagles Lodge No. 1084 in Bloomington and was a 25-year member there.

Services for William Jean will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, November 29th, at the Day & Carter Mortuary with the Rev. Russell Elkins officiating. Burial will following Valhalla Memory Gardens Mausoleum in Bloomington. Friends may call from 10 a.m. till 8 p.m. Sunday at the Day & Carter Mortuary.

Gilson – Dorothy Gilson of Bloomington, IN, formerly of Bedford, IN, died Wednesday, November 24, 1999, at Bloomington Hospitality House. Born on November 23, 1907, in Sullivan County, IN, she was the daughter of Francis Herbert and Emily Ellen (Stancombe) Pless. She married Raymond Gilson, and he preceded her in death.

Surviving are two two sisters, Carrie Kaiser and Eula Campbell, both of Bloomington, IN; two brothers, Robert Lee Pless of Spencer, IN, and Delbert Pless of Lafayette, IN; nine grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

She had worked at the M.Fine Co. for twenty-three years and at Sarkes Tarzian in Bloomington for eight years. She was a homemaker and a member of the Grace United Methodist Church, Order of Eastern Star, and White Shrine.

Services for Dorothy Gilson will be at 3:00 Sunday, November 28th, at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home with Pastor Robert Frields officiating. Burial will follow in Beech Grove Cemetery. Friends may call from 1 p.m. until the service time Sunday at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home.

Reynolds – Dorothy Marie Reynolds of Mitchell, IN, died Monday, November 22, 1999, at the Orange County Hospital. Born on December 4, 1908, in Campbellsburg, IN, she was the daughter of Elmer Curtis and Roxie Adeline (Wheat) Wires. She married Henry LaVern Reynolds on October 30, 1926, and he died November 13, 1988.

Surviving are one daughter, Ruth Elizabeth Slaughter of Mitchell, IN; one son, Curtis Eugene Reynolds of Edmond, OK; one sister, Agnes Rosenbaum of Mitchell, IN; seven grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, William LaVern Reynolds.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Fishing Creek Chapel.

Brooks – Mary Frances Brooks of Bedford, IN, died Sunday, November 21, 1999, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on January 11, 1924, in Pike County, IN, she was the daughter of Ralph and Angiline (Pearson) Kays.

Surviving are two daughters, Louis Ellen Marsh and Brenda Harvey, both of Bedford, IN; two grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Betty Jo Brooks in 1998; one brother, Virgil Kays; and one granddaughter.

She had worked at Sarkes-Tarzian and Westinghouse for 16 1/2 years and was a member of the Free Methodist Church.

Services for Mary Brooks will be at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 24th, at the Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery. Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Tuesday at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home.

Covey – Marjorie Louise Covey of Bedford, IN, died Sunday, November 21, 1999, at her residence. Born on May 1, 1933, in Vincennes, IN, she was the daughter of Cletus and Anna Louise (Halter) Carie. She married Robert Covey on March 16, 1960, and he survives.

Also surviving are two step-sons, David Covey of Belton, TX, and Bobby Covey of Bedford, IN; one step-daughter, Sherry Kopsho of Bedford, IN; seven brothers: Vernon and Henry Carie, both of Vincennes, IN, Bob, Ambrose, and Francis Carie, all of Bicknell, IN, Cletus Carie of Bloomington, IN, and Steve Carie of Nashville, IN; three sisters: Theresa Durham of the Patoka Reservoir area, Regina Arthur of Kansas, and Lillian Sheren of Vincennes, IN; eight step-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

She retired from RCA in 1987 with 22 years of service and was a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church.

Gilbert – Billy "Stanley" Gilbert of Bedford, IN, died Sunday, November 21, 1999, at the Bloomington Hospital. Born on June 6, 1925, in Woodford County, KY, he was the son of Wallis and Delia (Moore) Gilbert. He married Jewell Evelyn Morris on December 9, 1944, and she survives.

Also surviving are three sons: Billy Gilbert, Jr. of Springville, IN, John "Wally" Gilbert of Orleans, IN, and Ron Gilbert of Loogootee, IN; three sisters: Ruth Pace of Oolitic, IN, Mandy Stewart of Lily, KY, and Glennie Sutton of Bedford, IN; four brothers, Voy Gilbert of Oolitic, IN, Kenneth Gilbert of West Palm Beach, FL, Beachel Gilbert of Martinsville, IN, and Jim Gilbert of Knox, IN; nine grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Burcheal Gilbert; and one brother and sister in infancy.

He retired from Indiana Limestone and was a member of the Oolitic Baptist Church.

Deckard – Martha B. Deckard of Mitchell, IN, died Saturday, November 20, 1999, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on January 15, 1920, in Fresno, CA, she was the daughter of Dan B. and Carrie (Chess) Bishop. She married Lowell Raymond Deckard on January 25, 1942, and he survives.

Also surviving are five sons: Alan Deckard of Baltimore, MD, William Deckard of Chicago, IL, David Deckard of Nashville, James Deckard of Ellettsville, IN, and Edward Deckard of Palm Harbor, FL; two daughters, Susan Carleton of Bedford, IN, and Celeste Deckard of Mitchell, IN; one sister, Carolyn Schreiber of Mitchell, IN; and fourteen grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph and Paul Bishop.

She was a homemaker, a 1938 graduate of Mitchell High School, and a member of the Tulip Street Christian Church.

Services for Martha Deckard will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 24th, at the Tulip Street Christian Church with Bro. Max Timbrook officiating. Burial will follow in Mitchell Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. until the service time Wednesday at the church. Chastain Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. There will be no visitation at the funeral home.

Herald – John Herald of Mitchell, IN, died Saturday, November 20, 1999, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident. Born on May 24, 1953, in Cincinnati, OH, he was the son of Johnny and Tilda (Cook) Herald. He married Judy Knight on October 16, 1971, and she survives.

Also surviving are one son, Donnie Herald of Bedford, IN; one daughter, Alice Bridges of Mitchell, IN; his mother, Tilda Herald of Mitchell, IN; two brothers, Jerry Herald of Mitchell, IN, and Tom Herald of Gahanna, OH; four sisters: Charlene Smith and Cindy VanMeter, both of Mitchell, IN, Nancy Foddrill of Bedford, IN, and Brenda Morgan of Bloomington, IN; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father.

He was employed at Otis Elevator in Bloomington and formerly worked at Carpenter Body Works in Mitchell. He was a member of B.A.S.S.

There will be a graveside service for John Herald at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, November 24th, at Mitchell Cemetery with Bro. Dwayne Edmonson officiating. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Chastain Funeral Home.

Lancaster – James Harold Lancaster of Mitchell, IN, died Saturday, November 20, 1999, at his residence. Born on September 10, 1913, in Owensburg, IN, he was the son of Charles Edward and Daisy (Strosnider) Lancaster. He married Louise Harrison on March 19, 1932, and she died December 18, 1990.

Surviving are two daughters, Nancy A. Stork of Effingham, IL, and Beverly Sue Taylor of Mitchell, IN; one son, Charles William Lancaster of Mitchell, IN; one sister, Naomi Sparks of Linton, IN; seven grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by three grandsons.

He was a retired self-employed roofer and sheet metal worker. He was a member of the Church of Christ, SAL and Cecil C. Martin American Legion Post No. 250.

There will be a graveside service for James Lancaster at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 23rd, at Mitchell Cemetery with Bro. Marc Fields officiating. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Monday at the Chastain Funeral Home.

Anderson – Thelma C. Anderson of Bedford, IN, died Thursday, November 18, 1999, at the White River Lodge. Born on June 13, 1901, in Springville, IN, she was the daughter of L. Alexander and Myrtle (Davis) Evans. She married Martin Howard Anderson on June 14, 1924, in Bedford, IN, and he preceded her in death on April 10, 1996.

Surviving are several nieces and nephews of Bedford, including her caregiver, Harry D. Anderson. She was preceded in death by one brother.

She was a retired teacher, having taught for 32 years at Williams, Bedford, and Oolitic High Schools. She was a graduate of Bedford High School, Franklin College, and Indiana University. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday school teach for 54 years, and was secretary-treasurer of the church when the present church was constructed in 1970-74. She was a member of the Indiana Retired Teachers Association.

Services for Thelma Anderson will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, November 22nd, at the Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home with the Rev. Jon Lineback officiating. Burial will follow in the Beech Grove Cemetery. Friends may call from 3-8 p.m. Sunday at the Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church in Bedford.

Earl – Raymond M. Earl of Bedford, IN, died Thursday, November 18, 1999, at his residence. Born on August 1, 1933, in Tunnelton, IN, he was the son of Marshall Posey and Clara Mable (Barnett) Earl. He first married Rheta M. Porter and she survives. He later married Mary Ellen Delpha and she survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Tim Ear and Tom Ear, both of Bedford, IN; one daughter, Samantha Earl of Bedford, IN; one sister, Linda Lou Lewis of Texas, and one granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his parents.

He worked at Cummins Engine in Columbus, IN, for twenty-nine years and was a vetera of the Korean War, serving at Fort Benning, GA.

Services for Raymond Earl will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday, November 22nd, at the Day & Carter Mortuary. Burial will follow in the White River Baptist Cemetery. Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Sunday at the Day & Carter Mortuary.

Egbert – Maurice W. "Mike" Egbert of Bedford, IN, died Tuesday, November 16, 1999, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on February 16, 1917, in Earlington, KY, he was the son of Francis Marion and Lona (Tudor) Egbert. He married Mary Louise Morris on November 5, 1943, and she died February 4, 1998.

Surviving are three brothers-in-law: Lloyd and Bill Morris, both of Bedford, IN, and John Morris of Columbus, IN; one sister-in-law, Helen Baker of Salem, IN; one niece, and four great-nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother, Frank Egbert, and one sister, Martha Egbert.

He retired as custodial engineer of W.F. Meyers after 33 years of service. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a former hospital corpsman at Fort Harrison in Indianapolis. He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council No. 1166, United Auto Workers Local No. 1123, the American Legion Gillen Post No. 33, and the Legion chorus.

Services for Maurice Egbert will be at 10 a.m. Friday, November 19th, at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Cresthaven Memory Gardens with graveside military rites accorded by American Legion Gillen Post No. 33. Friends may call from 4-9 p.m. Thursday at the Ferguson-Lee Funeral home and from 9 a.m. until the service time Friday. A rosary service will be conducted by the Knights of Columbus at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent de Paul building fund.

Hattabaugh – Richard D. Hattabaugh of Mitchell, IN, died Tuesday, November 16, 1999, at the Bedford Regional Medical Center. Born on May 20, 1933, in Washington County, IN, he was the son of Millard and Mildred (Wheeler) Hattabaugh. He married Juanita Frost on December 2, 1959, and she survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Misty Hattabaugh of Mitchell, IN; four sons: Kenny Hattabaugh of Bedford, IN, and Jerry, Jimmy, and Darrell Hattabaugh, all of Mitchell, IN; two brothers, Ed Hattabaugh of Medora, IN, and John Hattabaugh of California; three sisters: Barbara Sills of Salem, IN, Violet Doyle and Juanita Dunn, both of Louisville, KY; and nine grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.

He retired from General Motors Powertrain in 1995. He was of Pentecostal faith.

Services for Richard Hattabaugh will be at 1:00 p.m. Friday, November 19th, at the Haverly Mortuary with Bro. Kenny Lucas officiating. Burial will follow in the Mitchell Cemetery. Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. until the service time Friday at the mortuary.

Gilbert – Joseph M. Gilbert of Mitchell, IN, died Monday, November 15, 1999 in Bedford. Born on July 29, 1916, in Mitchell, IN, he was the son of Ralph and Edna (Crawford) Gilbert. He married Mary Elizabeth Miller on April 19, 1941, and she died July 22, 1998.

Surviving are one daughter, Janice A. Ratkovich of Mitchell, IN; two sons, Terry Ray Gilbert of Columbus, IN, and Jackie D. Gilbert of Mitchell, IN; seven grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Patty Jo Tirey, and one son, Daniel L. Gilbert.

He retired from Lehigh Portland Cement Co after forty-three years of service. He was a member of the Jacob Finger United Methodist Church, Mitchell Masonic Lodge No. 228 F&AM, Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis, Mitchell Lions Club, was past patron of Order of Eastern Star No. 503, past member of the City of Mitchell Zoning Board, and had served as chairman of the stage decorations for the Persimmon Festival for twenty-three years. He was a graduate of Mitchell High School.

Services for Joseph Gilbert will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, November 18th, at the Chastain Funeral Home with the Rev. Jack Shake officiating. Burial will follow in Mitchell Cemetery. Friends may call from 3-8 p.m. Wednesday and from 9 a.m. until the service time Thursday at the funeral home.

Gray – Ted Gray of Mitchell, IN, died Sunday, November 14, 1999, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on November 18, 1940, in Manchester, KY, he was the son of Pearl and Ann (Gray) Gray. He married Patty E. Robbins, and she died on July 29, 1993.

Surviving are one daughter, Bonnie Gray of Williams, IN; two step-sons, Clyde Mills of Louisville, KY, and Jeff Mills of Campbellsburg, IN; his mother of Mitchell, IN; one brother, Fred Gray of Mitchell, IN; four sisters: Marie Caraway, Carolyn Edwards, and Pearl Howell, all of Mitchell, IN, and Shelby Jean Conley of Dunnellon, FL; and five grandsons. He was preceded in death by his father and two brothers, Zane and Merle Gray.

There will be a graveside service for Ted Gray at 10 a.m. Wednesday, November 17th, at the Mitchell Cemetery with the Rev. Jake Hamilton officiating. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Chastain Funeral Home.

Sloan – Margarette L. Sloan of Mitchell, IN, died Sunday, November 14, 1999, at Medco Center in French Lick. Born on September 15, 1908, in Martin County, IN, she was the daughter of Elias and Surilda (White) Harbison. She married Lester Sloan on September 20, 1962, and he died April 28, 1976.

Surviving are one daughter, Annie Scott Keneipp of Newport News. VA; one sister, Naomi Walker of Loogootee, IN; six grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Marjorie Trimble, four brothers, and three sisters.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Pilgrim Holiness Church in Martin County.

There will be private graveside services for Margarette Sloan on Saturday morning at the Mitchell Cemetery with the Rev. Gary Keiffner officiating. Haverly Mortuary is in charge of the arrangements. There will be no visitation at the mortuary.

Allen – Helen S. Allen of Albuquerque, NM, formerly of Bedford, IN, died Saturday, November 13, 1999, in New Mexico. Born on November 24, 1901, in Bluffton, IN, she was the daughter of Joseph and Ida (Taylor) Shafer. She married Dr. Lionel Howard Allen on June 2, 1926, and he died July 9, 1966.

Surviving are two daughters, Ann Allen of Devon, England, and Janet Allen Parker of Albuquerque, NM; one half-sister, Eleanor Shafer Young of Dayton, OH; two grandsons, and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph and Robert Shafer, and one granddaughter.

She had been a bacteriologist for Eli Lilly Pharmaceuticals in Indianapolis. A graduate of DePauw University, she was a member of of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Bedford, Tri Kappa, and Ladies of the Round Table.

There will be graveside services for Helen Allen at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, November 20th, at Cresthaven Memory Gardens with the Rev. Curtis Hurley officiating. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until noon Saturday at the Day & Carter Mortuary. Yeskie – Willard C. "Dutch" Yeskie of Oolitic, IN, died Saturday, November 13, 1999, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on March 9, 1906, in Oolitic, IN, he was the son of Charlie and Chessie (Conners) Yeskie. He married Mertie (Keith) Silvers, and she survives.

Also surviving are three step-sons, Harold Silvers of Marksville, La, Denny Silvers of Bedford, IN, and Mark Silvers of Mitchell, IN; eleven grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, two nieces, and two nephews. He was preceded in death by two step-sons, Tom Silvers and Roger Silvers; and two sisters, Edna Pritchett and Catherine Cain.

He was retired from Indiana Limestone Company. He was a member of the Avoca Baptist Church, the American Legion Gillen Post, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Services for Willard Yeskie will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday, November 15th, at the Day & Carter Mortuary. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery with military rites accorded by the American Legion Gillen Post #33. Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Sunday at the Day & Carter Mortuary.

Holland – A. W. Holland of Bedford, IN, died Friday, November 12, 1999, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on June 13, 1928, in Hickman, KY, he was the son of James Thomas and Jewell (Curvin) Holland.

Surviving are one sister, Mary E. Holland of Hickman, KY; and two brothers, Thomas Holland Jr. of Mishawaka, IN, and C. E. Holland of Arlington, KY.

He was a chef for Mannings, Inc. in San Francisco, CA, at the Fountain Blue Hotel in New Orleans, LA, and at the Fourwinds Restaurant in Kansas City, MO. He was a member of the First Church of God.

There will be no services or visitation. Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Wigley – Dason Isaiah Wigley, infant son of Bobbette Fish and Kyle Wigley of Bedford, IN, died shortly after birth Tuesday, November 9, 1999, at Riley Hospital in Indianapolis. He was born at the Bedford Regional Medical Center.

Surviving with the parents are the maternal grandparents, Phillip and Carmen Fish of Bedford, IN; the paternal grandparents, Jeff and Diana Wigley of Bedford, IN; the maternal great-grandparents, Don and Barbara Fish of Bedford, IN, Arthur Collier of Orleans, IN, and Carol McCullough of Indianapolis; the maternal great-great-grandparents, Mary Gerkin, Juanita Collier, and Henry Baker, all of Bedford, IN; the paternal great-grandparents, James and Jerene Wigley and Jewel Box of Bedford, IN; and the paternal great-great-grandmother, Grace Pate of Lawrence County, IN;

Adams – Jerry D. Adams of Bedford, IN, died Sunday, November 7, 1999, at the Bedford Regional Medical Center. Born on November 3, 1939, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of Delmar Burl and Ava Meadows Adams.

Surviving are one brother, Frank Adams ïf Bedford, IN; one sister, Beulah Marie Porter of Indianapolis; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.

At the time of his death he had been serving as Chairman of the Lawrence County Republican Central Committee since 1992, having worked as a Republican precinct committeeman for two decades prior to that. During his career he had been a buyer for Alden's Department Store, a member of the Lawrence Circuit Court staff, and an assistant superintendent in the Lawrence County Highway Department. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, where he was a Sunday School superintendent, and was a member of the Bedford Masonic Lodge No. 14 and Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis. He was a graduate of Needmore High School and was named Outstanding Alumnus in 1990.

Services for Jerry Adams will be at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 10th, at the First Baptist Church with the Revs. Jon Lineback and David Adams officiating. Burial will follow in Hanson Cemetery in Monroe County. Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Day & Carter Mortuary and from 11 a.m. until the service time Wednesday at the church. Hutton – Virlan D. Hutton of Mitchell, IN, died Saturday, November 6, 1999, at his residence. Born on June 26, 1923, in Terre Haute, IN, he was the son of Verlin and Addie Bell (Hutton) Gill. His step-father was John Arley Ambers. He married Marilyn Jones on December 24, 1958, and she preceded him in death.

Surviving are his companion, Jean Kelley of Mitchell, IN; two sons, Virlan D. Hutton, Jr. of Florida and Eric Wayne Hutton of Martinsville, IN; six daughters: Sandra Zuras of Virginia, Donna Kramer of Missouri, Teresa Reed of Ohio, Cynthia Yount and Carla Hutton, both of Mooresville, IN, and Denise Meyer of Martinsville, IN; one brother, Andy Ambers; one sister, Maxine Beasley of Huron, IN; nine grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Dale Edward Hutton; five brothers, Jack and Jim Gill, John, Leo, and Bill Ambers; and one sister, Mary Ambers.

He retired from L.K. Trucking Co. and had also driven for Anderson Motor Service, both located in Indianapolis. He also farmed for Senator Richard Lugar from 1957-1961. A Marine Corps veteran of World War II, he served in the First Martine Raider Battalion attached to the First Division.

Whitworth – Kenneth William Whitworth of Mitchell, IN, died Saturday, November 6, 1999, at his residence. Born on August 5, 1918, in Loughborough, England, he was the son of John and Lily (Orton) Whitworth. His first wife, Mary Ellen, died in 1959, and he married Anita Benninger in 1960. She survives.

Also surviving are one son, Robert Whitworth of Flint, MI, and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Elaine Buttz on May 16, 1999, and one sister, Kathryn Morrissey.

He retired from General Motors Powertrain (Central Foundry) in 1959. He was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge, becoming a Master Mason in 1944 in Brantford, Ontario, Canada. He was a member of the St. John's Episcopal Church.

Services for Kenneth Whitworth will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 10th, at the St. John's Episcopal Church with Father Ron Sacco officiating. Smith – Juanita K. Smith of Bedford, IN, died Thursday, November 4, 1999, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on November 16, 1925, in Bedford, IN, she was the daughter of Garrett and Maggie (Walters) Kimmel. She married Carlos B. Smith on July 31, 1943, and he survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Carlita McClung of Bedford, IN; one son, Thomas Dean Smith of Bedford, IN; one sister, Betty Jo West of Paoli, IN; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Garrett Kimmell in 1936,; and one grandson, Aaron S. McClung in 1991.

She retired from Sears and Roebuck with thirty-one years of service. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and the Dunn Memorial Hospital Pink Ladies.

Smith – Wallace E. Smith of Bedford, IN, died Thursday, November 4, 1999, at the Bedford Regional Medical Center. Born on June 8, 1910, in Franklin, IN, he was the son of Jim and Grace (Bell) Smith.

He is survived by his wife, Louise Smith of Bedford, IN; two sons, Keith Smith of Bedford, IN, and Jim Smith of Pekin, IN; two daughters, Gwen Deboy of Bloomington, IN, and Patricia Ann Tincher of Zanesville, OH; one sister, Alice Propst of San Diego, CA; fifteen grandchildren, twenty-six great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Freeda Smith.

He retired from Nordberg Rental and was the owner of Smitty's Grocery Store. He was a member of the Moose Lodge.

Services for Wallace Smith will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday, November 8th, at the Deremiah-Frye Mortuary in Bloomington with Bruce Roberts officiating. Burial will follow in Valhalla Memory Gardens. Sowders – Thomas Leroy Sowders of Bedford, IN, died Tuesday, November 2, 1999, at the Bedford Regional Medical Center. Born in 1927 in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of Everett and Truly (Fender) Sowders. He married Virginia L. Elkins on November 23, 1946, and she survives.

Also surviving are one son, Tom Sowders of Mitchell, IN; four daughters: Bonnie Sanders of Columbus, IN; Sandy Miller, Freida Branham, and Cindy McArtor, all of Bedford, IN; one brother, Linville Sowders of Heltonville, IN; four sisters: Leveda Winegar, Ada Bailey, Edna Deckard, and Mattie Nicholson, all of Heltonville, IN; nine grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Leonard Sowders; and infant sister, and one granddaughter.

He retired from the Naval Surface Warfare Center-Crane in 1975. From 1977-80 he was the Lawrence County Veteran Service Officer, and he served as bailiff in Lawrence Superior Court for six years, and served on the North Lawrence Community School Board of Trustees for eleven years. A World War II Navy veteran, he was a member of the American Legion Gillen Post #33. He was a member and an elder in the Heltonville First Christian Church, and was a member of the Toastmasters and the Bedford Rotary Club, where he was a past president. He served on the Gilgal Cemetery.

Services for Thomas Sowders will be at 1:00 p.m. Friday, November 5th, at the Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home with Bro. Jim Fisher officiating. Burial will follow in Gilgal Cemetery with graveside military rites accorded by members of American Legion Gillen Post #33. Friends may call from 2-9 p.m. Thursday at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home. Houston – Helen M. Houston of Bedford, IN, died Monday, November 1, 1999, at the Bedford Regional Medical Center. Born on September 10, 1914, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Clyde and Essie (Sandefur) Lewis. She married Oran R. "Sam" Houston on July 14, 1933, and he died May 14, 1995.

Surviving are one son, Larry R. Houston of Bedford, IN; two daughters, Janice Ford of Chandler, AZ, and Sammie Kay Polley of Bedford, IN; eight grandchildren, and thirteen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Donald and Willard Lewis.

She had worked for Pfeffer's Bakery and as a clerk in the Lawrence County Auditor's office. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Order of Eastern Star for over 50 years.

Services for Helen Houston will be at 1:00 p.m. Friday, November 5th, at the Day & Carter Mortuary with the Rev. Kenny Walden officiating. Burial will follow in Cresthaven Mausoleum. Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Thursday at the Day & Carter Mortuary, where the Order of Eastern Star memorial services will be conducted at 7 p.m.

Williams – Joyce Lee Williams of Bedford, IN, died Monday, November 1, 1999, at her residence. Born on December 11, 1945, in Bedford, IN, she was the daughter of Mansil and Wilma (Ray) Ragsdale. She married Ronald D. Williams on October 1, 1963, and he survives.

Also surviving are one son, Troy Williams of Bedford, IN; one daughter, Rona Wright of Bedford, IN; her mother, Wilma (Ray) Ragsdale Fields of Mitchell, IN; three sisters: Charleen Vestal of Orleans, IN, Brenda Fisher of Cloverdale, IN, and Connie Myers of Greene County, IN; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father and one brother, Gilbert Ragsdale.

She worked at Dunn Memorial Hospital for eighteen years and was administrative assistant and medical staff coordinator. She was a graduate of Shawswick High School and a member of Landmark Missionary Baptist Church.

Meadows – Mahlon Dean Meadows of Bedford, IN, died Sunday, October 31, 1999, at Vencor Hospital in Greenwood, IN. Born on December 11, 1934, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of Mahlon V. and Delmer (Strunk) Meadows.

Surviving are one brother, John Meadows of Oolitic, IN; one sister, Linda Hughes of Brownsville, TX; and two nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents.

He was a retired laborer and was of Pentecostal faith.

There will be a graveside service for Mahlon Meadows at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 3rd,at the Patton Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Bob Hughes officiating. Friends may call from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Day & Carter Mortuary.
