Jerry Wayne Mullis
Jerry Wayne Mullis took his final breath and was welcomed into the arms of God on August 25, 2025, following the onset of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) nearly two years ago. Born to Everett and Mildred Mullis in 1946, he spent most of his life – 76 of his 78 years – in Bedford, Indiana.
Jerry was a 1965 graduate of Bedford High School, and, at his sister’s urging, went on to earn his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Indiana State University. He began his 39-year career in business education at Washington High School, but quickly switched to his hometown school system, Beford North Lawrence, where he taught Business Law (his favorite course), Typing/Keyboarding, and other business classes.
Jerry was passionate about investing in the lives of young people. In addition to classroom teaching, he led the church youth group (Omega House) in his early adult years. His joy of teaching, desire to serve youth, and deeply competitive nature found a natural outlet in coaching. Throughout the years he coached Girl’s Club softball, BNL boy’s tennis, and, most enthusiastically, Free Methodist Bible Quizzing, which became a central part of Jerry’s life for 20 years. He deeply valued helping youth develop a love of scripture and coached all three of his daughters and two of his grandsons. He led five teams to national championships and was inducted into the Free Methodist Bible Quizzing Hall of Fame in 2018.
While his early dreams of playing basketball on the Bedford High School team never came to fruition, he was able to express his love for the sport by operating Bedford Church League basketball for nearly 20 years and “coaching” Indiana University basketball from the comfortable sidelines of his couch. Jerry also served his community by teaching adult education night classes and preparing tax returns through the VITA program.
Jerry loved Jesus and was a devoted, life-long member of the Bedford Free Methodist Church, where he served in a variety of capacities. A gifted teacher, he merged his passion for God’s word and his delight in bringing others to deeper learning by faithfully teaching Sunday School for 56 years.
Jerry was a loyal friend and “checkers-mate,” a dedicated servant and leader, an involved father and playmate, an engaged grandfather and chess mentor, and a loving husband and dishwasher.
While we rejoice that his struggles on this earth are over, Jerry will be deeply missed by many who love him, including: Denise, his wife of 56 years; his sister Carol Taha of New Jersey; his three daughters: Rachelle (Bill) Brown of Bedford, Indiana; Shannon (Gilbert) Liu of Columbus, Ohio; and Rhea Dawn Snider (Rob Wilkerson) of Madisonville, Kentucky; his nine grandchildren (Elizabeth Fuller, Sadie Wilkerson, Caleb Brown, Andrew Brown, Ezra Liu, Elijah Liu, Ceci Wilkerson, Evan Liu, and Eden Liu); his 12 nephews, 4 nieces, and their spouses and families; and by dear friends and fellow church members.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Everett and Mildred Mullis, brother Perry Mullis, sister-in-law Elsie Mullis, brother-in-law Oney Sims III, brother-in-law Issam Taha, sister-in-law DeAnne Rector, son-in-law Thomas Snider, and nephew Eric Sims.
A funeral service will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, August 31, at the Free Methodist Church with pastor Adam Strauser officiating. Burial will follow at Cresthaven Memory Gardens. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 30, at the Free Methodist Church and 2:30 p.m. until the hour of service on Sunday.
The family has been grateful for the incredible support of the ALS Association of Indiana and Team Gleason, a non-profit organization dedicated to serving individuals with ALS. In lieu of flowers, we welcome donations to Team Gleason in Jerry’s name.

Robert Elledge Barber
April 19, 1944 - June 21, 2025
Internment with Honors
Madison Veteran’s Cemetery
September 17, 2025 at 1:00pm
The public is welcome.
An emergency call comes through on the scanner - it is a house fire spreading quickly. Ten seconds go by, twenty, then thirty seconds more with no response. Dispatch again crackles through with more urgency asking for aid.
Then a third time the afternoon peace is broken by the call for help from dispatch. No one has answered.
“Can I go?” an anxious Robert Elledge Barber asks his only son, Doug.
Doug looks at the hopeful pleading in his father’s eyes and considers that this man has run into flames and smoke for nearly fifty years working to save lives and protect the firefighters in his community and across the state.
Robert was scheduled for risky cardiac surgery the very next day, but at this moment he isn’t thinking about himself. His concern was that someone needs help now and he can answer the call.
Finally, Doug, filled with pride says, “Sure, Dad, but I am going with you.”
That was the summer of 2019. Robert passed away on June 21, 2025 at the Veterans Administration Hospice Center in Albuquerque, NM.
Robert Barber was born on April 19, 1944 to Robert Luther Barber and Mabel Eloise Elledge. He lived an imperfect life of 81 years in service to others, always quick with wit and slow to anger yet his patience and sense of duty knew no bounds.
He graduated from Madison Highschool and joined the Navy in 1962 serving aboard the USS Lynde McCormick during the Vietnam War. He was an honorable member of the National Guard until retiring in 2003. He was also a valiant servant to his community as a member of Madison Fire Company #5, the Clifty 6 Volunteer Fire Company, Jefferson Proving Ground Fire Department and the Shawswick Volunteer Fire Department.
He was honored in 2019 for fifty years of distinguished service as an EMT and Firefighter in the state of Indiana and planned to retire to pursue his already award-winning nature photography hobby in the high desert of New Mexico where his son resides. Unfortunately cancer took him too soon.
Robert is survived by his spouse Darlynn S. Barber, son Douglas, daughter-in-law Kerri, grandson Michael Harris, brother Jim Barber, sisters Judy Hoffman and Mary Gray and more friends and admiring colleagues than is fair for one man to have.
Robert was finally called to rest by the only One who could convince him to do so. We are blessed for having witnessed his patience and sense of duty.

Vernon Joe Pursell
SPRINGVILLE – Vernon Joe Pursell, 70, passed away Tuesday, August 19, 2025, at Indiana University Health Bedford Hospital.
Born October 29, 1954, in Newark, he was the son of Charles Sherman Pursell and Betty (Burks) New. He married Terri Gail Baker on March 9, 1974 and she survives.
Big Joe, Biggie, Poppa Joe, and “Joe Joe Dancer” left this world and is now on the biggest adventure of his life. He leaves his wife, Tay-Tay, of 51 years. Big Joe fiercely loved her and took care of her. He protected his children, taught them strength, and let them be themselves in this world. He was extremely proud of who his grandsons were becoming and the impact they were having on this world. He loved his entire family with every ounce of his strength.
You could find him in the woods mushroom or ginseng hunting, fishing on the river, kayaking or boating on the lake, metal detecting, or walking the creek at his home. Big Joe was a talker and those words often offered comfort, or most definitely, a laugh. People often said he was the funniest person they had ever met. Your laugh made him happy. For anybody that would listen, he would tell them about Sam and “Autism Rocks and Rolls”, Joe-Joe and his hard work in college, and how Hunter, his little sidekick, was the smartest little boy in the world. Boys Behind the Fence will never be the same. He was a true artist. His masterpieces, paintings, drawings, and bowls, will help his legacy live on. If he were here, he would tell all of us, “I am fine.” So, he is, and we will be too.
Surviving are his wife, Terri Gail Pursell of Springville; children, Regina Dee (Douglas) Mitchell of Owensburg and Joe Michael (Catti) Pursell of Owensburg; grandchildren, Joe Ray Pursell of Owensburg, Sam Mitchell of Owensburg, and Hunter Pursell of Owensburg; and siblings, Connie Bohall, Ronnie Pursell, Lois Knox, Mary Vest, and Charley Pursell.

She was too wonderful to be limited by the life of her physical body. Her spirit endures past her time on earth. None of her family members can envision what a world without her would be like, so we each carry her forward in our own lives.
Funeral service will be conducted at 10:00 am on Tuesday, August 12th in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Pastor Jimmy Johnson and Pastor Joe McAdams officiating. Burial will follow in Dive Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Monday, August 11th at the Day & Carter Mortuary. Family and friends may express condolences at www.daycarter.com.
