Esther went on to attend and graduate from Purdue University’s School of Pharmacy.  Esther was one of 10 women in her graduating class entering a male-dominated STEM field – truly ground-breaking!

After graduating from Purdue and a short stent working as a pharmacist in Kokomo, IN, Esther started working at the drugstore in Orleans, IN. It was at this drugstore that she met her husband, Dale Hawkins.  They married on June 7, 1957. Shortly thereafter, they purchased Orleans Pharmacy and operated it for nearly 40 years.

Pleasant Baptist Church, later joining First Baptist Church in Mitchell, Tri Kappa, and holding various positions in county politics.  During her life in Orleans, Esther built a network of friendships that lasted a lifetime.  There are many cherished memories of the Roosevelt Street neighbors and later her Woodlawn Village neighbors, and the parties and gatherings after ballgames and during the holidays.

After retiring and selling the store, Esther and Dale moved to Indianapolis. Esther enjoyed her time working at Mr. E’s Hallmark Store and traveling throughout the United States. After her second “retirement” Esther loved spending time with her neighbors and other friends she developed.  After living in her house for several years, Esther moved to Marquette Manor in 2019 where she lived independently until her death.  While at Marquette, Esther developed many close friendships and participated in managing absentee voting registration for elections and serving on various committees.

Regina Sue Grimes Obit

Regina Sue Grimes

Ephesians 4:32 says: "Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you".

This was exemplified by the life of Regina Sue Grimes, who passed away July 1, 2025, at the White River Lodge surrounded by her family. She was born April 1, 1954, the daughter of Chester Dale and Bertha (Ingram) Varvel.

Regina was a founder and co-owner of T&G Construction Co., Inc., where she was Recording Secretary/Treasury for over 42 years. She was a very faithful member of Midtown Church of Christ in Bedford and served as treasurer for many years. She enjoyed reading and playing Scrabble with anyone that would play but mostly with her good friend and neighbor, Tina Marlow. Regina oversaw the finances of multi-million dollars of construction work but felt her greatest achievement in life was raising her children and granddaughters. Even though the task of her job was grueling, she found time, first and foremost, for the church and her family. She was ultimately a kind and generous lady. She firmly believed Philippians 2:3-4, which reminds us: "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of others.”

She is survived by her husband, Benny; one daughter, Mistie Bishop (Cliff Landreth) of San Antonio, Texas; 2 sons, Josh Grimes and Raymond (Tobie) Grimes, all of Mitchell; 2 granddaughters, Jameelia Grimes and Ashlen Grimes of Mitchell; a sister-in-law, Debbie (Dwight) Padgett; 3 nephews, 2 nieces and several cousins. She was preceded in death by her child, Sarah, in infancy; her parents, Chester Dale and Bertha (Ingram) Varvel; three sisters, Gwendolyn Baker, Marlene Varvel and Michelle Varvel, in infancy.

Funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday, July 7, in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center with Brother Jerry Jackson and Brother David Southern officiating.  Burial will be at Mitchell Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. Sunday, July 6, and from 1:00 p.m. until the service on Monday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers Josh Grimes, Raymond Grimes, Mistie Bishop, Cliff Landreth, Chris Marlow, and Reid Marlow will honor Regina by carrying and escorting her remains to the final resting place.
