05/31/02 Crane – Martha Helen (Guy) Crane of Bedford, IN, died Friday, May 31, 2002. Born on December 21, 1910, in Montgomery, IN, she was the daughter of Pearl and Gertrude (Nolan) Guy. Surviving are three daughters: Mrs. Robert (Pat) Herzner, Mrs. Donald (Martha) Byrd, both of Bedford, IN, and Mrs. Robert (Paula) Stephen of Kokomo, IN; four sisters: Mrs. Alfred (Joyce) Inman, Mrs. Howard (Jean) Tambaugh, both of Loogootee, IN, Mrs. Paul (Dorothy) Gutgsell of O'Fallon, IL, and Mrs. William (Winnie) Aytes of Livonia, MI; twelve grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Beatrice Engleman and Betty Spear; one son-in-law, Robert Stephen (May 23, 2002), and her ex-husband, Charles Opal Crane. She retired from housekeeping at Dunn Memorial Hospital. She was a member of the Dive Christian Church. Services for Martha Crane will be at 1:00 p.m. Monday, June 3rd, at the Day & Carter Mortuary with Johnny Johnson officiating and songs provided by Rebekah Ryan. Lawrence – Dorothy Lawrence of Bedford, IN, died Friday, May 31, 2002, at White River Lodge. Born on January 27, 1911, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Thomas R. and Nellie G. (Ramsey) Bair. She married George L. Lawrence on November 24, 1945, and he died April 27, 1974. Surviving are two sisters, Alice Brown and Mrs. Charles H. (Mary) Baker, both of Bedford, IN; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; two brothers, Nathanial and Harold Bair; and five sisters: Blanche Bair, Ellen Fish, Ethel Futrelle, Ruth Fultz, and Rachel Chase. She worked for Public Service for eleven years, then worked for Bedford Daily Times Mail fro twenty-five years before retiring. She was a member of the Erie United Methodist Church, Women's Evening Dept. Club, Omega Nu Tau, National Association of Retired Federal Employees, and AARP. Services for Dorothy Lawrence will be at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 4th, at the Day & Carter Mortuary with Pastor Ted Murphy officiating. Burial will follow in the Erie United Methodist Church Cemetery. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until the service time Tuesday at the Day & Carter Mortuary. Pigman – Maude Pigman of Mitchell, IN, died Friday, May 31, 2002, at Mitchell Manor. Born on February 10, 1903, in Nancy, KY, she was the daughter of Robert and Alice (Burton) Hudson. She married Stewart Pigman in 1922, and he died in 1963. Surviving are three daughters: Judith Shereikis of Evanston, IL, Anne Black of Bedford, IN, and Janet Zoble of Topeka, KS; two sons, Stewart Pigman of Ft. Myers, FL, and Herbert Pigman of Evanston, IL; twenty grandchildren, thirty-six great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; one son, Richard Pigman; three brothers, and four sisters. She was a homemaker, a seamstress, an author of children's stories, a member of the Irvington Art League, and was an active Republican. There will be a graveside memorial service for Maude Pigman later this summer at the Somerset Cemetery in Somerset, KY. Local arrangements were handled by the Haverly Mortuary. Williams – Oreta J. Overly "Rita" Williams of Bedford, IN, died Friday, May 31, 2002, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on October 23, 1940, in Bedford, IN, she was the daughter of Raymond and Betty Whitted. She married Steven R. Williams on June 3, 1967, in Heltonville, IN, and he survives. Surviving with her husband are one son, Kevin Williams of Bedford, IN; one daughter, Julie Pinell of Mitchell, IN; her mother, Betty Whitted Hunter of Bedford, IN; two sisters, Phyllis Lipscomb of Heltonville, IN, and Deborah Ann Lichetefeld of Bedford, IN; four grandchildren: Cayla and Jessica Pinell and Sonya and Demara Williams; and several aunts and uncles. She was preceded in death by her father. She was a homemaker and a member of the Mitchell First Church of God. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home. 05/30/02 Mikels – Mary F. Mikels of Bedford, IN, died Thursday, May 30, 2002, at Mitchell Manor Nursing Home. Born on March 24, 1924, in Oolitic, IN, she was the daughter of Lowery and Ida (Spoonmore) Jackson. She married Paul B. Mikels in 1944, and he died in 1989. Surviving are one son, Terry W. Mikels and wife, Lynda, of Ft. Myers, FL; two daughters, Valerie L. Mikels of Harrodsburg, IN, and Lisa D. Daughrity-Mikels of Mitchell, IN; six grandchildren, and thirteen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; three sisters: Mable Louden, Elsie McCain, and Dorothy Sullivan; and one brother, Wilbur Jackson. She attended the Free Methodist Church and was a member of the V.F.W. Lodge. Services for Mary Mikels will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, June 1st, at the Day & Carter Mortuary with the Rev. Pless of Mitchell, IN, died Wednesday, May 29, 2002, at the Bliss House. Born on November 9, 1913, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of Ray and Delphia Mae (Johnson) Pless. He married V. Irene McMahan on June 30, 1935, and she survives. Surviving with his wife are two daughters: two daughters, Sharon K. and husband, Jerry Tirey of Seymour, IN, and Cheryll and husband, William J. Sanders of Mitchell, IN; six grandchildren: Brad Tirey, Kim Darlage, Brian Tirey, Thomas Harrell, Jason Harrell, and Amanda Sanders; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Sheila Harrell; three sisters: Louis Dunlap, Mary Catherine Crabbe, and Edith Mae Lewis; and one brother, Winfred Pless. He retired from Lehigh Portland Cement Company and was a member of the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church. Services for J.B. Dayton of Bedford, IN, died Tuesday, May 28, 2002, at Bedford Regional Medical Center. Born on October 22, 1923, in Cincinnati, Ohio, he was the son of Roger and Nettia (Tremble) Dayton. He married Myrtle O'Keefe on June 6, 1942, in Cincinnati, OH, and she survives. Surviving are his wife; one son, Ronald Dayton of Bedford, IN; one daughter, Sandra Lewis of Ft. Ritner, IN; and one grandson, Robert Euhl of Bloomington, IN. He was preceded in death by one son, Richard H. Dayton, and one sister, Shirley Nolan. He was a maintenance supervisor at General Motors in Bedford, retiring in 1982. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Bedford Masonic Lodge F&AM 14, Hoosier Hills Ham Club, and served with the Merchant Marines in WWII. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home. Medlock – Hilbert F. Medlock of Bedford, IN, died Tuesday, May 28, 2002, at his residence. Born on February 3, 1917, he was the son of Jack and Emma (Smith) Medlock. He married Ethel Patton on March 12, 1938, and she survives. Surviving with his wife are two daughters: Patricia Medlock Stalker and husband, Donald, of Bedford, IN, and Carolyn Kimbrel and husband, David, of Springville, IN; two sisters, Charlotte Amick of Needmore, IN, and Barbara Williams of Fayetteville, IN; three brothers: Charles Medlock of Anderson, IN, Dr. John and Dr. Robert Medlock, both of Bedford, IN; five grandchildren: Tammy Coleman, Shellie McCaha, Shawn Staggs, Jody Terwiske, and Amy Sams. He was preceded in death by six sisters: Vannie King, Gleeda Arthur, Ina Hollars, and three in infancy; and two brothers, Lesta and Chester Medlock. He retired from General Motors and was a veteran of W.W. II, serving in the US. Army. He attended Friendly Bible Church and played the guitar and banjo with the Wonderettes for nursing homes for over thirty years. Root of Bedford, IN, died Tuesday, May 28, 2002, at his residence. Born on September 23, 1926, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of Orville and Emma (Myers) Root. He married Carol Divine on January 2, 1954, and she survives. Surviving with his wife are one son, John Root of Bedford, IN; two daughters, Cheryl Root Patton and Melissa Root Langley, both of Bedford, IN; his mother, Emma Myers Root of Bedford, IN; one brother, Morris Root of Bedford, IN, and four grandchildren: Melissa Hale, Amanda Patton, Shannon Root, and Eric Root. He was employed at Divine Auto Supply as a parts manager from 1954-1972, then moved to Pearlsburg, VA, where he was the owner and operator of Pearlsburg Auto Supply Co. for six years, after which he worked for the City of Roanoke VA, as a parts manager. After relocating back to Lawrence County, he worked for Mullis Petroleum and for E&M Hydraulic, retiring in 1989 for health reasons. He was a member of the First Christian Church and the Elks Lodge. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Juvenile Diabetes Foundation or Multiple Sclerosis Society. 05/27/02 Pridemore – Wilma Mae (Golden) Pridemore of Bedford, IN, died Monday, May 27, 2002, at the Hospitality House. Born on October 26, 1923, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of William Burton Golden and Carrie May (Bluff) Golden Bunch. She married Robert M. Pridemore on July 21, 1941, and he preceded her in death. Surviving are one son, Robert M. Pridemore, Jr. and his wife, Roxanne, of Bedford, IN; two daughters, Carolyn Tumey and husband, John T. of Bedford, IN, Susan Smale and husband, Terry, of Heltonville, IN; two sisters, Ester Johnson and husband Gilbert of Mitchell, IN, and Audrey Wall and husband Phillip of Linton, IN; two granddaughters, Karen Butler and husband Jerry of Mitchell, IN, and Heather McGlocklin and husband Tony of Heltonville, IN; two grandsons, Scott Tumey and wife Becky of Bedford, IN, and Tim Smale and wife Kelly of New Whiteland, IN; three step-granddaughters: Lisa Sons and Melanie Ernst, both of Bedford, IN, and Cindy Neeley of Greensburg, IN; four great-grandchildren, six step-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband and two sisters, Bernice Beavers and Mary Starrett. She was a member of the First Assembly of God. She was a hospice volunteer for the Bedford Regional Medical Center and Dunn Memorial Hospital for many years. Friends may call from 4-9 p.m. Wednesday and from 10 a.m. until the service time Thursday at the Day & Carter Mortuary. 05/26/02 Plummer – Amy Lee Plummer of Bedford, IN, died Sunday, May 26, 2002, at the Hospitality House. Born on January 9, 1909, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of George W. and Sarah Parr Cummings. She married Kenneth Plummer on May 11, 1929, and he died on January 26, 1987. Surviving are one son, Kenneth Plummer, Jr. and his wife, Ruth, of Bedford, IN; one brother, Charlie Cummings of Bedford, IN; two grandchildren: Lee Ann Plummer of Springdale, AR, and Marty Plummer and his wife, Roberta, of Bedford, IN; one great grandson, Jeremy Plummer of Bedford, IN, and one great-great-grandson, Jesse Plummer of Bedford, IN. She was preceded in death by her husband; two sons in infancy; four brothers: Roy, Ray, Jack, and Joe Cummings; and two sisters, Opal Tisdall and Cora Embree. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, and Emeritus member of the Altrusa International; over 40 years member of American Legion Auxiliary, Salon of 8 & 40, and AARP. Born on November 11, 1955, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of Kenneth and Gladys (Brewer) Batchelor. He married Eileen Bundy on September 13, 2001, and she survives. Surviving with his wife are two sons, Trinity Shane Batchelor of Bedford, IN, and Chad Alan Batchelor of Bloomington, IN; his mother, Gladys Fields of Mitchell, IN; one brother, James K. Batchelor of Mitchell, IN; and one sister, Diana Cart of Columbus, IN; He was preceded in death by his father; one half-brother, Wesley Slaughter; and one nephew, Dennis Coates. King, Jr., of Bedford, IN, died Saturday, May 25, 2002, at his residence. Born on October 24, 1954, in Bedford, IN, he was the son of William, Sr, and Thelma (Young) King. Surviving are two sons, William E. King and Eric King, both of Bedford, IN; one daughter, Andrea King of Bedford, IN; his mother, Thelma, of Bedford, IN; one brother, Chris King of Bedford, IN; and one sister, Michelle Pemberton of Bedford, IN. He was preceded in death by his father and one sister, Kimberly R. King. He was a plumber and stone worker. There will be graveside services for William King at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 29, at Dive Cemetery with Dirus Dustin officiating. Lowman – Dorothy Murray Lowman of Mitchell, IN, formerly of Miami, FL, died Saturday, May 25, 2002, at her residence. Born on September 11, 1906, in London, England, she was the daughter of Frank and Esther Bilyard. She married Merle Lowman, and he died January 5, 2001. Surviving is one son, John A. Murray of Mitchell, IN; She was preceded in death by her husbands; one daughter, Barbara Ann Daugherty; and four siblings: Ettie, Addie, Winnie, and Bill. The body was cremated. Chastain Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. 05/24/02 Brown – Erza Brown of Bedford, IN, died Friday, May 24, 2002, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on March 4, 1918, in Greene County, IN, he was the son of Ray and Clara (Chickadee) Brown. He married Mary Etta Lively and then Zelma Pearl Brown and both are deceased. Surviving are three daughters: Brenda S. Eagan of Bedford, IN, Rosetta M. Root and Patricia L. Baxter, both of Needmore, IN; one son, David Erza Brown of East Oolitic, IN; two sisters, May Kidd and Dorothy Walkins, both of Greenwood, IN; eight grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two wives and one brother. He had worked for the Bedford Street Department, retiring in 1983. Grissom – Leonard Grissom, Jr. of Mitchell, IN, died Friday, May 24, 2002, at his residence. Born on May 9, 1931, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of Leonard and Laura (Wedgewood) Grissom, Sr. He married Carol Judy on August 2, 1965, and she died on June 6, 1998. Surviving are fife sons: Jeffery Lee Grissom, Billy Leonard Grissom, both of Mitchell, IN, Michael Grissom, Thomas Grissom, and Richard Grissom, all of California; two daughters, Sharon Louis Grissom of Seymour, IN, and Lisa Grissom of California; three sisters: Betty Calfee of Mitchell, IN, Maude Dorsett of Indianapolis, and Christine Burkle of Terre Haute, IN; one brother, Robert Grissom of Indianapolis; and fourteen grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers: James, Earnest, and Raymond Grissom; and three sisters: Violet Gamble, Sylvia Sharp, and Anna Plump. He was a carrier for the Times-Mail and was a US Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Cecil C. Martin American Legion Post No. 250. Swango of Bloomington, IN, formerly of Needmore, IN, died Friday, May 24, 2002, at the Bell Trace Living & Health Care Center in Bloomington. Born on September 11, 1913, he was the son of Henry and Amanda (Holder) Swango. He married Gertrude R. Watson on February 24, 1940, and she died on March 27, 2001. Surviving are one daughter, Connie Swafford of Bloomington, IN; on sister, Nina Crose of Indianapolis; two granddaughters, Melanie Fitzgerald of Bloomington, IN, and Stephanie Erceg of Cincinnati, OH; five great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by five sisters: Adda Sanders, Cloe Swango, Echo Mason, Mayme Maddox, and Iris Allen. He retired from the Social Security Administration in 1968 and was a World War II veteran. He was a member of the Gulletts Creek Baptist Church, Masonic Lodge #14, and was a volunteer for the Hoosier Hills Food Bank for 13 years. Born on November 21, 1921, in Bedford, IN, she was the daughter of John and Adelaide (Schmitt) Burkhart. She married Gene Givens on June 26, 1943, and he died on July 13, 1989. She married William B. Harvey on November 26, 1960, and he preceded her in death on November 5, 2000. Surviving are one daughter, Patricia (Givens) Adams and husband, George of Bedford, IN; one grandson Steve Adams and wife, Misty of Bedford, IN; one great-grandson, Alex Adams of Bedford, IN; one sister, Mary L. Hutton of Kingston, TN; and one step-daughter, Madlyn Bly Howard and her family of Clovis, NM. She was preceded in death by five sisters: Lola Quillen, Eva Burkhart, Anna Inman, Helen Liva, and Jane Neumeister; and one brother, Joseph Burkhart. She worked at M. Fine & Co. for fifteen years. Hall – Cynthia E. Hall of Bedford, IN, died Wednesday, May 22, 2002, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on November 30, 1912, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Ernest and Mary Josephine (Quillen) Spoonmore. She married A. Clinton Hall on January 8, 1956, and he died April 9, 1980. Surviving are one son, Ernest Hall of Bedford, IN, three grandchildren: Troy D. Haggard, Shannon Fortner, and Dana Hall; and two great-grandchildren, Caleb Ikerd and Jackson Ikerd. She was preceded in death by her husband; one brother, William Spoonmore; one sister, Cora Spoonmore; one granddaughter, Erika Hall; and one grandson, David Haggard. She was a retired sales clerk at the K-Mart Store in Bedford and was a member of Central Church of Christ. Born on March 21, 1910, in Salem, MO, he was the son of Richard Silas and Magline (Crumpacker) Hutsell. He married Ollie Ida Sowders on April 6, 1936, and she preceded him in death. Surviving are five children: Riley Hutsell of Neosho, MO, Linda Nikirk of Oolitic, IN, Donna Shephard of Union City, TN, Wanda Dallinger of Reynolds, IN, and Wanitta Thompson of Lafayette, IN; one brother, Homer Hutsell of Monticello, IN; one sister, Beulah Loe of Columbia City, IN; thirteen grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, and six step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife; one daughter, Rita (Hutsell) Henson; three brothers: Cecil, Arthur and Forrest Hutsell; and three sisters: Lola, Mae, and Bertha. He relocated to Bedford in 1988 after retiring from Purdue University and Indiana Soldiers Home. He was a member of Calvary Chapel Church in Bedford. Hoff of Bedford, IN, died Sunday, May 19, 2002, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on December 19, 1935, in Monroe County, IN, he was the son of Abraham and Ivy (Mullis) Hoff. He married Patricia Flynn on November 21, 1960, and she survives. Surviving are a brother and his wife, Thomas F. and Patricia Thorne of Bedford, IN, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a brother and his wife, L. C. and Gladys Thorne; three sisters and their husbands: Mr. and Mrs. Jim (Mary Kay) Young, Mr. and Mrs. William (Betty Jean) Carter, and Dr. and Mrs. Maurice (Barbara) Manalan. Through the years, she was employed at Thorne's Market of Indianapolis, IN, H.P. Wassons and Justice of Indianapolis. Poling – Ariel Megnin Poling of Bedford, IN, died Tuesday, May 7, 2002 at Westview Manor Nursing Home. Born on March 16, 1922, she was the daughter of William Frederick (Bill) and Georgia Opal (Lewis) Megnin. She married Allen Maurice Poling on October 9, 1951, and he preceded her in death on January 5, 1992. Surviving are one son, William Allen Poling, of Bedford, IN; one brother, Frank I. Megnin, of Indianapolis, IN; three nieces; and ten nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and one sister, Mary Catherine. She was a budget analyst for the comptroller department at NWS Crane from December, 1942 until retiring on May 9, 1975. From 1980 through 1990, she worked with the Benjamin Franklin Stamp Clubs in elementary schools and at the Bedford Public Library. She attended the old Lincoln Elementary School, Bedford Junior and Senior High, graduating in 1939. She graduated from Indiana University in 1942 with a B.S. Degree in office management and secretarial training. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Bedford, Order of the Eastern Star 129 in Bedford, White River Humane Society, NDAR – John Wallace Chapter of Bedford, a life member of the Indiana University Alumni Association, Indiana Stamp Club, and the International Society of Worldwide Stamp Collectors. Reynolds of Needmore, IN; six grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents. She was a Title I Teacher's Aide at Fayetteville Elementary School and an inspector for the Indiana Department of Transportation. Surviving with his wife are one son, Jack Faubion and wife, Kae Dee; two daughters: Susan Norman and husband, Gerald, and Margaret Hall and husband, Charles, all of Heltonville, IN; one sister, Ruth Reynolds of New Castle, IN; thirteen grandchildren, and nineteen great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, Robert G. Faubion and Richard L. Faution; three brothers: Ralph, Ray, and Ervan Faubion; and five sisters: Margaret Riley, Blanche Gilliatt, Hovey Hegwood, Gladys Hendricks, and Edith Faubion.
