12/31/02 Simmerman – Mary Alice Simmerman of Mitchell, IN, died Tuesday, December 31, 2002, at Bloomington Hospital. Born on November 22, 1925, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Estes and Nellie Browning. She married Dewey Simmerman, and he died on May 6, 2001. Surviving are one son, Rick Simmerman of Bedford, IN; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and three brothers. She was a homemaker and a member of Mt. Pleasant Regular Baptist Church. Services for Mary Simmerman will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, January 4th, at the Day & Carter Mortuary with Pastor Steve Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Silverville. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Friday at the Day & Carter Mortuary. 12/30/02 Beyers – Lois C. Beyers of Oolitic, IN, died Monday, December 30, 2002, at her residence. She was born on January 3, 1905, in Oolitic, IN. She married Ted Beyers on June 3, 1923, and he died December 3, 1978. Surviving are two grandsons, Jon Maze of Bedford, IN, and Ted Maze of Oolitic, IN; five great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; one daughter, Charlene Maze; and one son, Robert E. Beyers. She was a homemaker and attended the Oolitic Baptist Church. There will be private funeral services for Lois Beyers at a later date. No calling hours are scheduled. The family asks that friends consider memorial contributions to the Oolitic Volunteer Fire Department or Dive Christian Church Children's Christmas Fund. Born on May 15, 1911, in Wayne County, KY, he was the son of James Logan and Marthanne (Keith) New. He married Pearl Godsey on April 2, 1932, and she died in 1971. Surviving are five sons: Gerald Dean New and his wife, Sue, Larry Wayne New and his wife, Judy, all of Bedford, IN, John David New and his wife Patsy, of Denver, CO, Michael Joe New and his wife, Joy, of Oolitic, IN, and Jerry Lee New and his wife, Vickie, of Mitchell, IN; one sister, Ethal Mack of California; twelve grandchildren: Mark New of Virginia, Cheryl William of Indianapolis, Scott New of Florida, Brian New of Denver, CO, Kelly Collins of Seymour, MO, Carol Cummings and Dianna Turner, both of Bedford, IN, Danny New of Avoca, IN, Bridget Taylor and David New, both of Oolitic, IN, Kevin New of Mitchell, IN, Devin New of Springville, IN; and thirty-four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife; one son, Ray O'Dell New; three brothers: Willy Foley New, Lloyd Walker New, and Dewey New; and four sisters: Ruth Mary New, Gertie New, Frona Jane New, and Dona Rebecca New. He was an employee of General Motors in Bedford and was a member of the Oolitic Methodist Church. Surviving with her parents are two brothers, Shon and Mathew, both at home; maternal grandparents, Larry and Linda Ashley and Larry Purlee; paternal grandparents, Mike and Paula Holdcroft; maternal great-grandparents, Marjorie Stone, Ben and Irene Purlee; and paternal great-grandparents, Lyla West and Asel Holdcroft. Born on October 4, 1926, in Fontana, CA, he was the son of Jefferson R. and Alice Bessie (Leonhardt) Mayfield. Surviving are one sister, Corinne Reid of Elk Creek, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents. There will be a graveside service for Herbert Mayfield at 1:00 p.m. Monday, December 30th, at Mitchell Cemetery with Bro. Allen Burris officiating. Rowlett – Rebecca Lynn Rowlett of Mitchell, IN, formerly of Monroe City, IN, died Saturday, December 28, 2002, at the Bedford Regional Medical Center. Born on October 15, 1975, in Columbus, IN, she was the daughter of Pastor James Earl and Linda (Pullin) Like. She married Cecil D. Rowlett, Jr. on December 11, 1999, and he survives. Surviving with her husband are her parents of Monroe City, IN; two half-sisters, Connie Breidenbaugh of Vincennes, IN, and Pam Cosby of Petersburg, IN; two half-brothers, Randy Like of Rockport, IN, and Chris Like of North Vernon, IN; and her maternal grandparents, Rabin and Janet Pullin of Rensselaer, IN. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Otis and Irene Like. She was a claims specialist for Great West Casualty Company in Bloomington. She was a member, co-youth minister, and treasurer of Wilson Creek Baptist Church at Monroe City. Born on December 7, 1917, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of John R. and Golda Kern Smith. He married Joy Helen Wagner, and she died on September 19, 1999. Surviving are one son, Dr. Jerry Smith of Pittsburgh, PA; one daughter, Brenda Blackwood Kuntzler and her husband Dr. Robert Kuntzler of Atlanta. GA; two grandsons, Johnathan Blackwood and wife, Erin, of Atlanta, GA, and Marcus Blackwood of Atlanta, GA; one great-granddaughter, Emily Blackwood of Atlanta; and one nephew, Jason Smith of Louisville, KY. He was preceded in death by his wife; one sister, Elsie Lenore Smith, and one older brother, Joseph T. Smith, and a younger brother, Jimmy Dale Smith. He worked for Diamond Shamrock Corporation for twenty-eight years, attended the I.U. Business School and Oklahoma A&M College, and served with the U.S. Air Force during World War II. He was a member of the American Legion Gillen Post No. 33 and a 30-year member of Bedford Elks Lodge No. 826. Born on June 6, 1924, in Huron, IN, he was the son of Lawrence and Mabel (White) Beasley. He married Maxine Gill and she survives. Surviving with his wife are one son, Kenneth Wayne Beasley and wife, Hazel, of Mitchell, IN; one daughter, Sunnie Kaylene Cummings and husband, Paul, of Walnut Shade, MO; one sister, Lorene Cooper; four grandchildren: Troy Don Beasley of Orleans, IN, Crystal Tuell of Mitchell, IN, Patrick Cummings of Pennsylvania, and Eric Cummings of Michigan; and eleven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Ruby Beasley. He retired from National Gypsum, was a 1942 graduate of Huron High School, and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the 96th infantry. He received a bronze star. He was a member of the Cecil C. Martin American Legion Post #250 and had served as deacon, Sunday school teacher and superintendent at Huron Baptist Church. Bell of Bedford, IN, died suddenly on Tuesday, December 24, 2002, at Bedford Regional Medical Center. Born on August 5, 1933, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of Sanford and Hannah (Miller) Bell. He married Judy Canada Ellis on April 24, 1972, and she survives. Surviving with his wife are three daughters: Carla Bell, Jamie Chastain and her husband, Chuck, all of Bedford, IN, and Candy Bell of Sarasota, FL; one son, Scott Bell of Bedford, IN; four grandchildren: Brandon, Tanner, Tucker, and Trey Chastain; two nieces, Lorenda Noel and Ruby George; and one nephew, Steven Savoy. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Ethel Coe; one niece, Patty Troutman; and one great-nephew, Chris Troutman. He retired as a salesman with Wabash Food Service in Vincennes, IN. He was a member of New Union Christian Church, where he served as a song leader, deacon, and taught Sunday school. Born on June 25, 1932, in Indianapolis, IN, she was the daughter of Walter Dedrick and Lois "Mimi" (Walker) Prather, Sr. She first married Bobby Gene Fortner. She married Walter "Bus" Briscoe on January 14, 1956, and he died on April 8, 2000. Surviving are two daughters: Gale Ann Acton and husband, Wendell, of Seymour, IN, and Susan Kay Hughett of Mitchell, IN; four granddaughters: Hilliary Hope King of Mitchell, IN, Amanda Gale Geyer of Oolitic, IN, Erica Lea King of Costa Mesa, CA, and Brittany Sue Hughett of Mitchell, IN; one grandson, Matthew Allen Geyer of Newton, IA; one great-granddaughter, Rachel Mare Geyer of Newton, IA; two nieces, Keli Ann Parker of Mitchell, IN, and Diana Louise Cabello of Edinburg, TX; one nephew, Walter Dedrick Prather III of Tucson, AZ; and caregiver and honorary grandson, Toby Hutchens. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son David Lee Fortner; and one brother, Walter Dedrick Prather, Jr. She was a 1950 graduate of Mitchell High School and a member of the Cecil C. Friends may call from 3-8 p.m. Saturday and from 11 a.m. until the service time on Sunday at the Chastain Funeral Home. 12/23/02 Bush – Adren Louisa "Lou" Bush died on Monday, December 23, 2002, at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, IN, from injuries suffered in an auto accident on December 19th. Born on March 3, 1928, in Huron, IN, she was the youngest of eight children of Thomas A. and Ethel Pearl (Pearson) Pridemore. She married Don Bush on March 21, 1947, and he survives. Surviving with her husband are two daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and David Conley and Judy and Vencil Crews, all of Orleans, IN; one brother, Ernest Pridemore of Bedford, IN; two sisters, Alleen Recker of Mitchell, IN, and Dolories Cannon of Shoals, IN; two grandsons, Donald E. Conley of Hagerstown, MD, and Jeremy S. Brown of Orleans; and eight great-grandchildren: Danielle Suzan Conley, Haley Marie Oldham, Hope Delaney Busick, David Thomas Conley, Linza Rae Busick, Donna Jo Conley, Tavin Conner Street, and Destiny Ann Conley. She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Homer, Glen, and Linza Pridemore; and one sister, Lucille Pridemore. She was the one of the first teachers for the Head Start Program in the area and attended Liberty Christian Church. Pridemore of Greenwood, IN, formerly of Mitchell, IN, died Saturday, December 21, 2002, at St. Francis Hospital in Beech Grove, IN. Born on July 23, 1925, in Mitchell, IN, he was the son of John and Myrtle (Winegar) Pridemore. He married Barbara A. Hawk on July 25, 1987, and she survives. Surviving with his wife are one step-daughter, Jacquelyn Kyanka of Palos Heights, IL; and two step-grandsons. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Glen Pridemore and Kirzie Pridemore; and one sister, Margaret Long. He was employed thirty-seven years at Allison Gas Turbine Plant #5 Division of General Motors in Indianapolis, retiring in 1987, and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of Masonic Lodge #669, Indianapolis Valley of Scottish Rite, Greenwood Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #5864, American Legion Post #252, Moose Lodge #2079, and Fraternal Order of Eagles in Greenwood. Born on November 11, 1974, in Bedford, IN, she was the daughter of George and Rita (Turpin) Street. She married Chris Dominique on May 17, 1997, in Mitchell, IN, and he survives. Surviving with her husband are one daughter, Allison Phillips (at home); one son, Jacob Dominique (at home); her mother, Rita East and her husband, Terry, of Mitchell, IN; her father, George Street and his wife, Rhea Dawn, of Shoals, IN; four sisters: Laura Furman and Phyllis Diawara, both of Bedford, IN, and Michelle Street and Cindi Street, both of Shoals, IN; one brother, Brian Street of Shoals, IN; her maternal grandmother, Vera Turpin of Mitchell, IN; two step-fathers, Ronnie Lloyd and Carl Fowler; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by one brother, George Street, Jr., in infancy. She was the office manager at Center for Behavioral Health in Mooresville, IN. A 1993 graduate of BNL High School, she earned an Associate Degree in Business from the International Business College. She was a member of the Mitchell Wesleyan Church. Born on March 25, 1922, in Terre Haute, IN, he was the son of David F. and Ida E. (Turpin) Drumb. Surviving are one son, David Drumb of Heltonville, IN; one daughter, Pam Poole of Bedford, IN; one sister, Dollie White of Bedford, IN; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters. He had worked at the Philco Plant in Bedford and was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Terre Haute, IN. Born on June 4, 1920, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of Opal and Grace (Baker) Johnson. He married Ruth Beasley on January 25, 1945, and she survives. Surviving with his wife are two daughters, Jean Ellen Jackson and companion Tommy Brashear and Judy Caswell and husband Bert, all of Bedford, IN; grandchildren: Timmy Caswell and Terri Cazee; great grandchildren: Gretchen and Morgan Cazee, Kiersey, Darsey, and Mason Caswell; Cindy Tolliver, who was like a granddaughter and her children, Grant Tolliver and Jacee Davis; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by three brothers: Lloyd, Carl and his twin, Robert, who was killed during WW II in Italy; and one son, Robert Lee Johnson. He retired from General Motors and a veteran of WW II, serving the the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Grace Methodist Church, a lifetime member of the Bedford Boat & Sportsman's Club, American Legion Gillen Post #33, V.F.W. Post #604, Masonic Lodge #14 F& AM, Blue Lodge and Grott Club and the Eagles No. 654, and past member of the Senior Club 55 Bowling League. Beasley of Mitchell, IN, died Monday, December 16, 2002, at Bloomington Hospital. Born on January 18, 1934, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of Fred and Esther (Winkler) Beasley. He married Delores M. Powell on January 24, 1953, and she survives. Surviving with his wife are two daughters and their husbands, Sharon K. and Gary Cheatham of Orleans, IN, and Judy and Michael Pugh of Mitchell, IN; two sons and their wives, Larry E. and Debbie Beasley and Troy E. and Sherri Beasley, all of Mitchell, IN; his mother, Esther Beasley of Mitchell, IN; one brother, Russell Beasley of Mitchell, IN; one sister, Moyne Powell of Bedford, IN; and ten grandchildren: Zachariah E. Beasley, Audria A. Beasley, Ezra I. Beasley, Brian A. Cheatham and wife Amanda, Karen M. Cheatham, Trisha L. Push, Shala M. Pugh, Nicholas E. Beasley, Tenton E. Beasley, and Treva J. Beasley. He was preceded in death by his father. He was a farmer and was employed at Carpenter Body Works for forty-five years and had also worked at Mitchell Crushed Stone. He was a 1952 graduate of Mitchell High School and a member of the Liberty Baptist Church. Born on January 17, 1924, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Joseph and Sophie (Paledino) Capparella. She married Henry Mosier, and he preceded her in death. Surviving are three sons: Joseph Mosier and his wife, Diana, Duane Mosier and his wife, Leilani, all of Bedford, IN, and James Mosier and his wife, Judy, of Bloomington, IN; two sisters, Mary Catherine Zuttarelli and Tresa Carter; eight grandchildren: Tonya Moore, Jamie Webb, Jason Mosier, Jessica Sullivan, Tyler Mosier, Christopher Mosier, Bruce Davidson, and Brian Davidson; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; one son, Henry Eugene Mosier (in infancy); one sister, Mary Ruth Bundy; and one brother, Frank Bellush, Jr. She was a homemaker and a member of Mt. Pleasant Christian Church and later attended the Peerless Pentecostal Church. Born on May 29, 1920, in Southport, IN, he was the son of Walter B. and Adelaide (Willman) Minnich. He married Myra M. (Kane) Floerke on January 21, 1987, and she survives. Surviving with his wife are three sons: Greg Minnich of Indianapolis, Steve Minnich of Detroit, MI, and Gary Minnich of Sharpeville, IN; one grandson, Minh Do of Indianapolis; two step-sons, Jerry Floerke and his wife, Tera, and James Floerke, all of Bedford, IN; two step-daughters, Patricia A. Poole and her husband, Steven, of Bedford, IN, and Karen Nale of Milltown, IN; fifteen grandchildren, and twin great-granddaughters; one niece, Connie Clephane of California. He was preceded in death by one brother, Richard Minnich, and one sister, Letha Schnurr. He was a salesman with Central Supply, AB Young and Bob Rick, all in Indianapolis. He graduated from Southport High School in 1938 and was president of his class. He was a WW II veteran of the U.S. Navy, and was a charter member of the 39th Street Christian Church. Ingle of Bedford, IN, formerly of Tunnelton, IN, died Thursday, December 12, 2002, at Westview Nursing and Rehab Center. Born on March 13, 1908, in Bono, IN, she was the daughter of Edward and Mary (Marks) Dixon. She married Edward Crawford in October, 1929, and he died in November, 1942. She married Richard Ingle in March of 1947, and he died in October, 1974. Surviving are one daughter, Jo Jones of Bono, IN; three grandchildren: Richard Jones of Shelby County, AL, Daphne Nealis of Cincinnati, OH, and Robert Jones of Bono, IN; nine great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren; one niece, Mary Pickett Sexson of Southport, IN; one great-nephew, Gregory Pickett of Bedford, IN; and two great-niece, Sharon Brimberry of Sheridan, IN, and Beth Smoek of Southport, IN. She had worked as secretary and bookkeeper for Jenkins Motor Shop for twenty-five years. She was educated at Tunnelton High School and Secretarial College in St. Louis, MO. She was a member of the Tunnelton Methodist Church, a 50-year member of Eastern Star, charter member of the Dunn Memorial Pink Ladies, and was a Red Cross Blood Drive Volunteer. She was a member of the Methodist Church in Monee, IL. 12/11/02 Connell – Robert C. Connell of Mitchell, IN, died Wednesday, December 11, 2002, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on December 24, 1922, in Mitchell, IN, he was the son of Clyde and Myrtle (Kane) Connell. He married Wilma Wright in 1942, and she survives. Surviving with his wife are two sons, Robert L. and Phyllis Connell of Mitchell, IN, and Stephen C. and Nancy Connell of Canton, MI; three daughters: Marilyn and Mike Gifford of Bedford, IN, Jo Anne Connell Roberts of Mitchell, IN, and Susan Connell Wilson of Florence, SC; one sister, Betty Rouse of Indianapolis; five grandchildren: Kathi and Jim Root of Bloomington, IN, Tammy Roberts and Dominick Scarfone of Bloomington, IN, Hollie Wilson of Charleston, SC, Marci and Scott Staley of Veedersburg, IN, and Jason Connell of Sellersburg, IN; and two great-grandsons, Kyle Robert Root and Cody James Root. He was preceded in death by four sisters: Mildred Henry, Helen Williams, Bonnie Jean Connell, and Mary Irene Connell. He retired from the Job Training Corps with L.O.W. Economic Development, but during his lifetime he had worked at Carpenter Body Works, as a meat cutter and manager for Newmans Grocery, Loudens, and Mills Markets, was a Western Southern Insurance representative, worked for the State of Indiana Department of Revenue under Governor Matthew Welsh, and was a stone mason. He was a 1942 graduate of Mitchell High School. In World War II he earned the rank of Staff Sergeant, trained as an army medic, and served with the Third Army under General Patton in the invasion of Normandy, D-Day+6 going through St. Lo, France. He was stationed in Italy, France, and Germany until the end of the war. He was awarded the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Ribbon with two Bronze Service Stars, American Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, and World War II Victory Medal. He was a fifty year member and past commander of Cecil C. Martin American Legion Post #250, where he held several offices including service officer. He was a member of first commander of Marvin R. Davis Veteran of Foreign Wars Post #9107, and a member of the Disabled American Veterans. He served as president of the Mitchell Lions Club, was elected to the Marion Township Advisory Board, was active in the Democrat Party, and was a precinct committeeman. He was a member of the Jacob Finger United Methodist Church, and had served as president of the Methodist Men. He was born on August 30, 1918, in Lyons, IN. He married Dorothy Hansen in 1940, and she survives. Surviving with his wife are one son, Bruce Roberts; two daughters, Cindy Roberts and Jennifer Mitchell; seven grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and five step-great-grandchildren. Photography was his life, and he and his wife operated Roberts Studio from 1947-1976, specializing in commercial and portrait work, and later became a marketing consultant for Burrell Colour, Inc., a professional photography processing facility in Crown Point, IN. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in the signal corps in the European Theater. He was a graduate of Bedford High School, where he was a member of the basketball team that went to the state finals during his senior year. Receiving many awards for his photography work, he was a life member of four photography organizations, including the Indiana Photographers Association, serving as president and board member, former member and president of the Lions Club, and a member of the First Christian Church. Born on December 3, 1942, she was the daughter of Dr. Leonard A. and Opal Clark. She married Glen Dodson on December 10, 2000, and he survives. Surviving with her husband are three children: Chris Jones of Chicago, IL, Karen Jones of Ft. Wayne, IN, and Craig Jones of Fowler, IN, all formerly of Bedford, IN; four step-children: Christopher Dodson of Alvin, TX, Hayden Dodson, Erin Dodson, and Kira Dodson, all of Dallas, TX; two grandchildren, Faith Jones and Lilwen Jones; one step-grandson, and countless adopted pets and children. She was preceded in death by her father, Dr. Leonard A. Clark, and her brother, John Ed Clark. She was an educator, activist, entrepreneur, and volunteer, whose life work was devoted to assisting the less fortunate. A graduate of Bedford High School and Indiana University, with a Bachelors Degree in Forensic Studies and a Master Degree in Adult Education, she most recently worked for Alvin Community College teaching an adult GED course. She worked previously in adult education for both Indiana University and Ivy Tech State College. During her years in Bedford, she served as Director of the Villages of Indiana, Lawrence County Juvenile Probation Officer, and founded Santa's Helpers. She was an active member of Good Shepard Episcopal Church in Friendswood, TX, and previously of St. John's Episcopal Church in Bedford, serving on both the local vestry and diocesan council. She was a member of Psi Iota Xi sorority, the Elk's Ladies Auxiliary, performed and volunteered with the Bedford Little Theater. Services for Linda Dodson will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, December 5th, at St. John's Episcopal Church in Bedford. Friends may call from 12-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Day & Carter Mortuary. Phipps – Ruth Phipps of Bedford, IN, died Sunday, December 1, 2002, at her residence. Born on October 14, 1921, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Bessie Mae Kern. She married Robert H. Phipps on October 25, 1955, and he died February 8, 2000. Surviving are one daughter, Gloria Owen and husband, Jack, of Deland, FL; one brother, Olin D. Kern of Newbern, TN; one sister, Rosalee Elrod of Indianapolis, IN; two grandchildren, Jack Owen of Deland, FL, and Debra Owen of Chatham, MA; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband. She was the owner and operator of Ruth Kern's Beauty Shop for sixty-two years in Bedford and was a member of the Central Church of Christ. Services for Ruth Phipps will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, December 7th, at the Day & Carter Mortuary with Bros. Gary Spear and Darrell Simon officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Friday at the Day & Carter Mortuary.
