07/29/01

Wester – Wilma Maxine Wester of Mitchell, IN, died Sunday, July 29, 2001, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on April 6, 1923, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Ordie J. and Lavana P. (Blake) Baker. She married O'Dell C. Wester on December 20, 1945, and he died June 6, 1980.

Surviving are seven grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; one great-grandchild; six nieces, and four nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one step-son, Robert W. Wester; one brother, Dale Baker; one sister, Margie Brassine; and one niece, Diane Bough.

She was a psychiatric technician at Camarillo State Hospital in Camarillo, CA, from 1944 to 1962.

There will be graveside services for Wilma Wester at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 31st, at Cresthaven Memory Gardens with the Rev. Bruce Walls officiating. Services are under the direction of Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home. There will be no visitation.

Shipwash – Kenneth "Butch" Shipwash of Springville, IN, died Saturday, July 28, 2001, at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis. Born on March 29, 1946, he was the son of M. Verna Shipwash. He married Maxine Fields on May 1, 1977, and she survives.

Surviving with his wife are one son, Harry Richard Shipwash, at home; his mother of Bloomington, IN; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandparents and one aunt.

He was employed at ASE Technician-Sternbert Inter. in Bloomington, IN. He was a member of Jehovah's Witnesses.

Services for Kenneth Shipwash will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 31st, at the Day & Carter Mortuary with Bro. Edward Speer officiating. Burial will be in House Prayer Cemetery in Fayetteville. Friends may call from 3-8 p.m. Monday at the Day & Carter Mortuary.

Abel – Thelma E. Abel of Bedford, IN, died Friday, July 27, 2001, at White River Lodge. Born on July 3, 1905, in Linton, IN, she was the daughter of Walter and Ida Florence (Brown) Forner. She married Louis "Red" Abel on November 15, 1924, in Bedford, IN, and he died February 27, 1971.

Surviving are one daughter-in-law Julia Abel of Bedford, IN; one son-in-law, James Woody of Bedford, IN; one grandson, Thomas Abel of Emmitt, MI; one granddaughter Robin E. Woody of Bedford, IN; four great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband; one daughter, Margaret (Mickey) Woody in July 2001; one son, Walter Thomas Abel in September 1985; one grandson, Larry Jason Copeland; two brothers, and one sister.

She was a homemaker and had helped at Three Pigs Restaurant. She was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, St. Vincent de Paul Altar Society, and Ladies of the Knights of Columbus.

Services for Thelma Abel will be at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 31, 2001, at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church with Father Bernie Cox officiating. Burial will follow in Beech Grove Cemetery. Friends may call from 3-8 Monday at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home, where the Rosary service will be conducted at 7 p.m. that evening.

Jackson – Edna B. Jackson of Bedford, IN, died Friday, July 27, 2001, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on September 14, 1914, in Lawrence County (Palestine Area), IN, she was the daughter of Thomas C. and Stella M. (Cooper) Beasley. She married Eura T. Jackson on May 26, 1934, and he died February 17, 1988.

Surviving are one son, Thomas Jackson of Bedford, IN; one brother, Raymond L. Beasley of Bloomington, IN; two sisters, Mrs. Charles (Edith) Tincher and Mrs. Lois Lane, both of Bedford, IN; five grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three sisters and three brothers.

She was a housewife and a member of Eagles Auxiliary.

Roark – Charles Everett Roark of Williams, IN, formerly of Versailles-Milan area, died Thursday, July 26, 2001, at his residence. Born on April 4, 1942, in Letcher County, KY, he was the son of Henry and Gemela (Caudill) Roark. He married Barbara Welch on June 12, 1978, and she survives.

Surviving with his wife are three step-children: Caroll Sue Garriott of Medora, IN, Gina Jones of New Whiteland, IN, and Herbert Popp of Osgood, IN; three sisters, Sue Hicks, Rosa Fraze, and Erma McGowan, all of Dothan, AL; six step-grandchildren, and one step-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents.

He was a retired truck driver and a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam Conflict. He was a member of Old Regular Baptist Church.

Services for Charles Roark will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, July 28th, at Little Memory Baptist Church in Sunman, IN, with the Revs. Charles Shepard and Jimmy Ray Bailey officiating. Burial will follow in Little Memory Baptist Church Cemetery. Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Friday at Chastain Funeral Home and from 10 a.m. until the service time Saturday at the church.

Branaman – Marvin E. (Gene) Branaman of Bedford, IN, died Tuesday, July 24, 2001, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on March 23, 1943, in Bedford, IN, he was the son of Marvin A. "Fuzzy" and Rose Alice (Wade) Branaman. he married Patti Sons on September 15, 1961, and she survives.

Surviving with his wife are two daughters, Kristy Endris and Lisa Brinkworth, both of Bedford, IN; one son, Tim Branaman of Bedford, IN; two brothers, Joe and Ronnie Branaman, both of Bedford, IN; six grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Donnie Branaman.

He retired as a Lieutenant from the Bedford Fire Department. He was a member of Hillcrest Christian Church, Bedford Lodge #14 F&AM, Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis, Murat Shrine, F.O.P., Firefighters Association, Bedford Elks Lodge, and was serving his second term on the Bedford City Council.

Services for Marvin Branaman will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 27th, at the Day & Carter Mortuary with the Rev. Gary Cornwell officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery. Annetta – Ralph J. Annetta of Bedford, IN, died Monday, July 23, 2001, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on January 7, 1924, in Oolitic, IN, he was the son of Tony and Rose (Magnus) Annetta.

Surviving are one sister, Angie Waldron of Bedford, IN; one nephew, Jerry D. Waldron of Bedford, IN; one niece, Sandi Waldron of Bedford, IN; several great-nieces and nephews, and several great-great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.

He retired from Central Foundry in 1985. He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, and U.A.W. Local #440.

Services for Ralph Annetta will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, July 26th, at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church with Father Bernie Cox officiating. Burial will follow in Cresthaven Memory Gardens. Friends may call from 3-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Day & Carter Mortuary, where a Rosary service will be conducted at 7 p.m.

Ritchey – Alta Mae Ritchey of Williams, IN, formerly of Martin and Daviess Counties, IN, died Monday, July 23, 2001, at Hospitality House. Born on March 4, 1909, in Martin County, IN, she was the daughter of Ira Edward and Malinda Ellen (McCall) Webster. She married Hayden Ritchey on January 30, 1933 in Knox County, Vincennes, IN, and he died in October, 1979.

Surviving are one son, Tony Ritchey and his wife, Debbie, of New Albany, IN; four sisters: Berniece Williams of Odon, IN, Geraldine Bridwell of Inverness, FL, Josephine George of Williams, IN, and Ruth "Curley" Wray of Mitchell, IN; three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; five brothers: Denver Webster, Haskell "Doc" Webster, Rex Webster, Ira Junior Webster, and Harley Webster; one sister, Alberta Mattingly; one granddaughter, Missy Hamilton; and one great-grandson.

She was a homemaker. She attended Second Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Odon, where she was pianist, and the Nazarene Church in Cale, IN.

Services for Alta Ritchey will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 25th, at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home with the Rev. Merla Craig officiating. Burial will be at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday in Walnut Hill, Odon, IN. Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Tuesday at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home.

Mitchell – Olive U. Mitchell of Greensburg, IN, formerly of Bedford, IN, died Saturday, July 21, 2001, at Morning Breeze Nursing Home in Greensburg. Born on January 24, 1913, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of James and Daisy (Burch) Johnson. She married Loran J. Mitchell on August 25, 1934, and he died on May 11, 1995.

Surviving are one daughter, Martha L. Cummings of Rushville, IN; five grandchildren: Lynnette Fite Sullivan of Georgia, Beth Holman of Rushville, IN, Christopher Fite of Martinsville, IN, Cathy Herbert of Milroy, IN, and Rick Cummings of Rushville, IN; eight great-grandchildren, and two nieces, Rosalie Roberts of Bedford, IN, and Shirley McMunn of Bloomington, IN. She was preceded in death by her husband; one daughter, Marilyn Fite; and one grandson, Steven Fite.

She was office manager for Triangle Leahy and was a member of the First Church of God.

Services for Olive Mitchell will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 25th, at the Day & Carter Mortuary with Pastor Jeff Edwards officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery. Taflinger – Maude L. Taflinger of Mitchell, IN, died Saturday, July 21, 2001, at Mitchell Manor Living and Rehab Center. Born on August 25, 1907, in Martin County, IN, she was the daughter of James F. and Georgia (Taylor) Smith. She married Newton A. Taflinger on October 26, 1926, and he died April 22, 1957.

Surviving are three sons: Newton Taflinger, Jr. and Charles "Eddie" Taflinger, both of Mitchell, IN, and James Taflinger of Paoli, IN; four daughters: Norma Sloan and Eleanor Graves, both of Mitchell, IN; Kay Tafinger of Atlanta, GA, and Ann McCart of Orleans, IN; twenty-two grandchildren and twenty-six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; two sisters, Martha Ballard and Zella Canfield; three brothers: Ford, Willis, and Ralph Smith; and two grandchildren.

She was a retired housekeeping supervisor at Spring Mill Inn.

Baker – Virgil Lewis Baker of Bedford, IN, died Friday, July 20, 2001, at his residence. Born on July 18, 1938, in Martin County, IN, hewas the son of Drass Ray and Bessie (Schmidt) Baker. He married Nancy Lea Chaillaux on February 2, 1957, and she survives.

Surviving with his wife are one son, Tomas Baker of Bedford, IN; two daughters, Cynthia L. Baker-Miller of Alaska and Melissa A. McPike of Bedford, IN; two sisters, Marilyn J. Beemblossom of Shoals, IN, and Bonnie B. Chesser of Dallas, TX; one brother, Harold Ray Baker of Bedford, IN; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Barbara Jerrells and Lenore Baker.

He was a retired Cinergy-PSI lineman and a veteran of the Indiana National Guard. He was a member of Old Union Christian Church.

Burton – Willard H. Burton of Mitchell, IN, formerly of Huron, IN, died Thursday, July 19, 2001, at Mitchell Manor Living and Rehab Center. He was born on May 13, 1918.

Surviving are his wife, Pauline Burton of Mitchell, IN; one son, James R. Burton of Columbia, MO; one brother, Bernard Burton of Cleves, OH; one sister, Bernadine Terry of Indianapolis; six grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

Survant – Helen Survant of Bedford, IN, died Thursday, July 19, 2001, at her residence. Born on August 25, 1921, in Volpen, IN, she was the daughter of Louis and Jesse (Jones) Stilwell. She married Carl W. Flinn on October 26, 1936, and he died in 1971. She then married Guy G. Furvant on April 29, 1981, and he died in 1988.

Surviving are two daughters, Leandra K. Yost of Bedford, IN; Mrs. Rob (Carlene) VanBlaricum of Grapevine, TX; one brother, Robert Stilwell of Princeton, IN, one sister, Sandra Kupper of Huntingburg, IN; three grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by both husbands; two sisters, Dorothy Stilwell and Monzella Mefford; and two brothers, Wilburt and Eugene Stilwell.

She was retired from RCA in Bloomington and was a member of First Baptist Church in Bedford wince 1956.

Services for Helen Survance will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 23rd, at the Day & Carter Mortuary with the Rev. Jon Lineback officiating. Burial will follow in Cresthaven Memory Gardens. Prince – Goldie Marie Deckard Prince of Heltonville, IN, died Tuesday, July 17, 2001, at her residence. Born on March 31, 1906, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of George and Arzona (Stewart) Deckard. She married Orlando Prince on July 9, 1927, and he died August 14, 1981.

Surviving are children: Nina Reynolds of Needmore, IN, Colleen Vaught and Rebecca Keithley, both of Heltonville, IN, and Vernon E. Bartlett of Indianapolis, IN; one sister, Cleo Hillenberg of Bloomington, IN; grandson and caregiver, Landon Keithley; several grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, four brothers, and seven sisters.

She was a homemaker and worked on the family farm. She was a member of the Donica Church of God.

Services for Goldie Prince will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 20th, at the Day & Carter Mortuary with Pastor Kendall Hendrickson officiating. Burial will follow in Hanson Cemetery. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. until the service time Friday at the Day & Carter Mortuary.

Carter – Paul L. "Churn" Carter of Mitchell, IN, died Sunday, July 15, 2001, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on March 29, 1922, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of Allen and Elizabeth Doane Carter. He married Lena Johnson on February 12, 1942, and she survives.

Surviving with his wife are one daughter, Janet Sue Land of Mitchell, IN; one grandson and his wife; one granddaughter; two sisters-in-law, Mabel Carter of Mitchell, IN, and Alice Carter of Bedford, IN; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brother, Fred and Forrest Carter; and one sister, Lucy Ritchison.

He was an electrician, retired in 1978, and had worked for Chamber's Bros Electric for several years and then becoming self-employed. He was a member of Fairview Church of Christ, where he had served as Deacon, and International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers #16, Evansville, IN.

Smith – Barbara L. Smith of Bedford, IN, died Sunday, July 15, 2001 at Bedford Regional Medical Center. Born on February 1, 1927, in Clinton County, IN, she was the daughter of Jess and Jessie (Thompson) McKinney. She married John C. Smith, Sr., and he died in 1985.

Surviving are one son, John C. Smith, Jr. of Austin, TX; one daughter, Karen J. Weaver of Bedford, IN; one son-in-law, Glen Weaver of Bedford, IN; one brother, Ward McKinney of Kirklin, IN; two sisters, Florence Muegge of Evansville, IN, and Phyllis Jeffries of Lebanon, IN; and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, and five sisters.

She was a homemaker. She was a member of Eagles Ladies Auxiliary #654 and American Legion Auxiliary Gillen Post #33.

Dorsett – Elsie J. (Hopper) Compton Dorsett of Mitchell, IN, died Friday, July 13, 2001, at Bedford Regional Medical Center. She was born on December 22, 1931.

Surviving are three daughters: Anital Beasley of Orleans, IN, Kyle Ramey of Bedford, IN, and Kymberly Compton of St. Louis, MO; three sons: Michael James Compton and Danny Compton, both of Mitchell, IN, and Kelly Compton of Oolitic, IN; and four sisters: Betty Edwards, Rosemary Trowbridge, Colleen Pridemore, and Kay Tanksley, all of Mitchell, IN.

She was a homemaker.

Hawkins – Michael Dean Hawkins, Sr., of Bedford, IN, died Friday, July 13, 2001, at his residence. Born on February 9, 1946, in Bedford, IN, he was the son of Zelbert B. and Helen (Dalton) Hawkins. He married Carolyn Jo Southern on August 21, 1964, and she survives.

Surviving with his wife are two sons, Michael Dean Hawkins, Jr, and wife Gloria, and Matthew Barry Hawkins, all of Bedford, IN; one daughter, Mrs. Randy (Amy Jo) Cassidy of Bedford, IN; one brother, Zelbert Hawkins and wife Gloria of Bedford, IN; two sisters, Mrs. Kenneth (Joanna) Williams, Jr. of Williams, IN, and Mrs. Bob (Lois) Hardwick of Bloomington, IN; one brother-in-law, Doug Kidwell; four grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, George Curtis Hawkins; one sister, Mary Louise Kidwell; and one grandson, Jared Michael Hawkins.

He was owner and operator of Hawkins Satellite Sales and Service, Hamilton-Harris of Bedford, IN, and he had also worked as a meat cutter. He was a 1964 graduate of Bloomington High School, and a member of Dive Christian Church, 14 F&AM Masonic Lodge, former Past President of Lawrence County Saddle Club, former Special Deputy and Jailer in Lawrence County, and active in 4-H.

Services for Michael Hawkins will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday, July 16th, at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Dive Cemetery. Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Saturday and from noon-8 p.m. Sunday at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home. Contributions may be made to Dive Christian Life Center Building Fund.

Pipher – Barbara J. (Shipman) Pipher of Mitchell, IN, died Friday, July 13, 2001, at Mitchell Manor Living and Rehab Center. She was born August 5, 1927. She married James E. Pipher, and he survives.

Surviving with her husband are three daughters: Sandy Neal of Orleans, IN, Lana Woods of Indianapolis, and Janis Kay Sherfick of Myrtle Beach, SC; two sisters, Norma Lea Wade and Ruth Ann Roach, both of Shoals, IN.

She was a homemaker.

Koval – Barbara A. Koval of Bedford, IN, died Thursday, July 12, 2001, at Bloomington Hospital. Born on September 28, 1954, in Fulton, NY, she was the daughter of Francis and Florence Brown. She married Roger Koval on October 7, 1972, and he survives.

Surviving with her husband are two sons, Shane Koval of Mitchell, IN, and Dustin Koval of Fulton, NY; three sisters: Kathy Kimble of Tucson, AZ, Betty Kimble of Fulton, NY, and Jean Hayden of Bowie, MO; three brothers: Phillip and Jimmy Brown, both of Fulton,, NY, and Francis Brown, Jr. of Hannibal, NY; and one granddaughter. She was preceded in death by one sister, Doris Cole.

She was supervisor of the Arcade at Mr. Gatti's Restaurant and was a member of Stone City Rounds & Squares Dancers.

There will be a graveside service for Barbara Koval at 1:00 p.m. Monday, July 16th, at Springville Christian Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Monday at the Day & Carter Mortuary.

McGee – Barbara N. McGee of Bedford, IN, died Thursday, July 12, 2001, at Mitchell Manor. Born on February 24, 1928, in Martin County, IN, she was the daughter of Opal and Nine (Alderson) George. She married Gerald "Buster" McGee, and he died in 1987.

Surviving are ne son, Gerald G. McGee of Bedford, IN; two brothers, John George of Las Vegas, NV, and Phil George of Columbus Grove, OH; five grandchildren, and one great-grandson. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, two sisters, and one brother.

She was retired from Uniroyal in Washington, IN, and was a member of Bedford Baptist Temple and United Rubber Workers.

Standiford – Alberta A. Standiford, of Mitchell, IN, formerly of Orleans, IN, died Thursday, July 12, 2001, at Bedford Regional Medical Center. Born on August 21, 1921, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of William Alexander and Ida Florence (Brown) Wheeler. She married James Clayburn Collier and he died in 1943. She married John Harold Standiford on November 1, 1946, and he survives.

Surviving with her husband are one daughter, Shirley Diane Beyers of Bedford, IN; one brother, Paul Wheeler of Tulip, IN; one half-sister, Gladys Allen of Bedford, IN; three granddaughters, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by two sons in infancy, William David and James Edward Collier; her parents; five sisters, and four brothers.

She was a hairdresser and a member of Mitchell Church of God.

Holland – Helen E. Holland of Bedford, IN, died Wednesday, July 11, 2001, at Westview Manor. Born on June 22, 1903, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Lesley and Lillie (Younger) Hodges. She married Charles V. Holland on June 27, 1925, and he survives.

Surviving with her husband are one son, Charles L. Holland of Carmel, IN.

She was a homemaker and was a member of Leatherwood Christian Church since 1921.

Buher – Albert "Abe" Buher of Ne3w Castle, IN, formerly of Bedford, IN, died Tuesday, July 10, 2001, at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. He was born on November 26, 1911.

Surviving are are one sister, Audrey Day of Bedford, IN, and one brother, Chuck Buher of California.

He retired from M.Fine & Sons ater many years of service, and he had also worked for Reliance Corp. in Bedford.

Thralls – Charles L. Thralls of Orleans, IN, died Tuesday, July 10, 2001, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on June 13, 1928, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of Charles A. and Bartha Ann (Feltner) Thralls. He married Barbara Westfall on October 3, 1947, and she died on September 7, 1990.

Surviving are one daughter, Brenda Dorsett and her husband Ronnie of Mitchell, IN; two sons Allen Thralls and Ed Thralls and his wife Kathy, all of Mitchell, IN; and one grandson, Chad Thralls of Bedford, IN. He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; two sisters, Edith Trueblood and Norma Wiley; one brother, Clyde Thralls; and one grandson, Mark Dorsett on September 15, 1985.

He was a retired construction superintendent and a 1947 graduate of Mitchell High School. He was a member of Indiana Carpenters Welfare Union and the Mitchell Church of Christ.

Chapman – Rosemary Chapman of Bedford, IN, died Monday, July 9, 2001, at the Bedford Regional Medical Center. Born on June 9, 1929, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Otto and Bernice (Bundy) Browning. She married Roy Warren Chapman on September 25, 1967, and he preceded her in death.

Surviving are three sons: Steve Chapman of Oolitic, IN, Rick Chapman of Mitchell, IN, and Randy Chapman; one daughter, Sharon McCullough of Oolitic, IN; one sister, Marjorie Short of Bedford, IN; four grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one brother, James Browning; and one sister, Betty Brewer.

She was a homemaker.

Morris – John G. Morris of Bedford, IN, died Monday, July 9, 2001, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on May 7, 1928, in Tedders,, KY, he was the son of John and Rhoda (Tuttle) Morris. He married Rita Kay Magnus on July 2, 1960, at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Bedford, and she survives.

Surviving with his wife are one daughter, Mrs. Scott (Karen) Weaver of Bedford, IN; one son, John G. Morris of Bedford, IN; one sister, Jewell Gilbert of Bedford, IN; two brothers, Willie Morris of Bedford, IN, and Tommy Morris of Michigan; one grandson, and one granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his parents and several brothers and sisters.

He was a former maintenance mechanic for Indiana Limestone Company, retiring in 1990, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, and American Legion Gillen Post No. 33.

Mary Cezar Annette – Mary Cezar Annette of Bedford, IN, died Sunday, July 8, 2001, at her residence. Born in Austria, she was the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Puschutz) Cezar. She married George T. Annette in July 1942 in Monroe County, IN, and he died on January 10, 1990.

Surviving are one sister, Frances "Fannie" Allen of Bedford, IN; one nephew, Don Allen of Butler, IN; two nieces, Joan Allen of Bedford, IN, and Sandra Gilmour of Wayne, PA; and several great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; one sister, Lillian Cezar; three brothers: Joseph, Frank, and Bill Cezar; and one niece, Karen Nyikos.

She was a secretary at Citizens Bank and had also worked as a secretary for the State Department of Correction in Indianapolis and for the California Bank of Glendale, CA. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the American Association of Retired Persons.

Services for Mary Annette will be at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 10th, at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home with Tim Magnus officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery. DeFord – Mabel DeFord of Bedford, IN, died Sunday, July 8, 2001, at Hospitality House. She was born on June 29, 1899.

Surviving are two daughters, Juanita Sykes of Bedford, IN, and Marilyn Amerson of Sacramento, CA; one son, Terry Dean Owens of Springville, IN; several grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, and several great-great-grandchildren.

She was a retired practical nurse.

Mann – Martha Mann of Bedford, IN, formerly of Orleans, IN, died Sunday, July, 2001, at White River Lodge. Born on April 24, 1921, in Washington County, IN, she was the daughter of Milo and Daisey (Collier) Brewer. She married Loren Varvel on November 29, 1945, and he died on December 15, 1975. She married Frank Mann on May 5, 1979, and he survives.

Surviving with her husband are one daughter, Connie L. McNeal of Mitchell, IN; one son, Donald W. Varvel of Mitchell, IN; one step-daughter, Cheryl McKinney of Brownstown, IN; one step-son, James F. Mann Jr. of Arizona; three sisters: Verle Hoggatt of Campbellsburg, IN, Gladys Fields and Blanch Varvel, both of Mitchell, IN; two brothers, Otho Brewer of Salem, IN, and Delbert Brewer of Leipsic, IN; four grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband; her parents; two sisters, Wilma Hamilton and Flossie Horner; and three brother: Homer, John, and Noble Brewer.

She was a homemaker and a member of Stonington Church Christ.

Lessig – Imilda F. Grogan Lessig of Mitchell, IN, died Saturday, July 7, 2001, at her residence. Born on August 14, 1939, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Oscar A. and Maggie Mae Grogan. She married Leroy Lessig on September 2, 1960, and he survives.

Surviving with her husband are three sons: Orval Lessig and John Lessig both of Mitchell, IN, and Randall Lessig of Huron, IN; one daughter, Fay Lessig Gibson of Shoals, IN; her mother; four brothers: Marvin Grogan, David Grogan, and Jackie Grogan, all of Bedford, IN, and Millard Grogan of Williams, IN; four sisters: Sue McDaniels and Shirley Yaney, both of Bedford, IN, and Luella Jones and Zellma Cole of Mitchell, IN; six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father; one brother, Bobby Lee Grogan; and two sisters, Eva Oliver and Penny Grogan.

She was a member of Jehovah's Witnesses.

Baker – Edith P. Baker of Bedford, IN, died Thursday, July 5, 2001, at Westview Manor. Born on August 12, 1915, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Eliab and Ellen (Somerville) Pattison.

Surviving are one son, George Pattison Baker of Matteson, IL; one sister, Helen Beretta of Bedford, IN; two brothers, William Pattison of Indianapolis, IN, and Harry Pattison of Noblesville, IN; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Ethel Harris and Emma Gennett; and one brother, John David Pattison.

She was retired from Trucking Co. in Chicago and Matteson, IL. She was a member of St. Johns Episcopal Church.

There will be a graveside service for Edith Baker at 10:00 a.m. Monday, July 9th, at Green Hill Cemetery with Father Donald Jones officiating. There will be no calling hours. Services are under the direction of the Day & Carter Mortuary.

Mann – Anthony "Tony" Mann of Mitchell, IN, died Thursday, July 5, 2001, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on May 5, 1947, in Mitchell, IN, he was the son of Charles W. and Priscilla (White) Mann. He married Jana Mundy on May 6, 1973, and she survives.

Surviving with his wife are two daughters, Melissa Mann of Mitchell, IN, and fiance, Brent Courter of Shoals, IN, and Monica Mann of Mitchell, IN; his mother, Priscilla Mann of Mitchell, IN; two sisters, Connie Jenkins of Mitchell, IN, and Julie Fender of Bedford, IN; two brothers, Denny Mann of Mitchell, IN, and Mike Mann of Mitchell, IN. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles W. Mann on August 24, 1994.

He was production superintendent at Lehigh Portland Cement Company, a 1965 graduate of Mitchell High School, attended Purdue University and was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam Conflict. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Cecil C. Martin American Legion Post #250 and Marvin R. Davis Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #9107, Saddlebrook Country Club, and Indiana School Board Association. He was serving as vice president of the Mitchell Community Schools School Board.

Services for Anthony Mann will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday, July 9th, at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Raymond Bunn officiating. Burial will follow in Mitchell Cemetery with graveside military rites accorded by members of Cecil C. Martin American Legion Post #250 and Marvin R. Davis Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #9107. Friends may call from noon to 8 :30 p.m. Sunday and from 9-11:30 a.m. Monday at Chastain Funeral Home and from 12:30 p.m. until the service time Monday at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to Mitchell Community Schools Scholarship Foundation in care of the funeral home.

Remlinger – Beulah M. Remlinger of Bedford, IN, died Thursday, July 5, 2001, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on March 11, 1929, in Illinois, she was the daughter of Henry and Manie (Carpenter) Elliott.

Surviving are one sister, Irene Stevens of Bedford, IN; one brother, Charles Elliott of Sullivan, IN; and three nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Bertha Corfell; and one brother, William Elliott.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Free Methodist Church.

Thomas – Betty B. Thomas of Mitchell, IN, died Thursday, July 5, 2001, at Kindred Hospital South in Greenwood, IN. Born on January 25, 1930, in Orange County, IN, she was the daughter of Oscar and Cora (Tincher) Williams. She married Paul W. Ritchison, who preceded her in death. She then married Spencer Thomas, and he died on December 9, 1984.

Surviving are three sons: Mike Ritchison of Decatur, IN, Nick Ritchison and Ralph Ritchison, both of Mitchell, IN; one daughter, Terry Manning of Bedford, IN; two brothers, Warren Williams and Jesse Williams, both of Mitchell, IN; two sisters, Dorothy McCart of Mitchell, IN, and Lorene Ashley of Bedford, IN; eleven grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two husband; three brothers: John Williams, Harry Williams, and Clifford Williams; and two sisters, Mary K. Sheeks and Maxine Hodge.

She had worked at M.Fine & Sons and was a member of Women of the Moose.

Kruse – Samuel W. Kruse of Bedford, IN, died Wednesday, July 4, 2001, at his residence. Born on November 28, 1932, in Allen County, IN, he was the son of Walter and Flora (Spencer) Kruse. He married Marcia Pridemore on December 5, 1981, and she survives.

Surviving with his wife are three sons: Jan and Doran Kruse, both of Bedford, IN; and Samuel K. Kruse of Texas; one daughter, Lynn McCreary of Virginia; one step-son, Scott Copper of Bedford, IN; one brother, Donald S. Kruse of Ft. Wayne, IN; eleven grandchildren, and one great-grandson. He was preceded in death by one daughter, LeaAnne Kruse.

He was retired from the Indiana State Police Department in Bloomington, IN, serving from 1954 to 1984. He then became Federal Police Officer at Crane NWSC from 1984 to 1994. A U.S. Marine Corps veteran, he served during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Bedford Masonic Lodge #14 F&AM, Gillen Post #33 American Legion, and was a past president of the Bedford F.O.P. He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church.

Services for Samuel Kruse will be at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, July 7th, at the Day & Carter Mortuary with Father Bernie Cox officiating. Graveside military rites will be accorded by member of Gillen Post #33 American Legion and F.O.P. #94. Guthrie – Mary E. Guthrie of Bedford, IN, died Tuesday, July 3, 2001, at her residence. Born on July 27, 1933, she was the daughter of John S. and Helen (Cox) Sherfick. She married James "Jim" Guthrie on September 6, 1950, and he survives.

Surviving with her husband are two sons, James L. Guthrie of Mitchell, IN, and John R. Guthrie of Bedford, IN; one daughter, Judy S. Couch of Scottsburg, IN; two sisters, Irene Bennett of Indianapolis, IN, and Brenda Tempest of Columbus, IN; and one brother, John Bob Sherfick of Ft. Ritner, IN. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Charles and Louie Sherfick.

She was retired from Dunn Hospital and was of Baptist faith.

Oliver – Paul Edward Oliver of Bedford, IN, died Tuesday, July 3, 2001, at Westview Manor. He was born on October 6, 1925.

Surviving are six sons: Jim Oliver of Texas, Bob, John, and Sunny Oliver, all of Bedford, IN, Dennis Oliver of Bloomington, IN, and Kevin Oliver of Loogootee, IN; one sister, Hazel Koetter of Bedford, IN; thirteen grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

He had been a railroad worker, a construction worker, and had been employed at RCA in Bloomington.

Judah – Larry Judah of Bedford, IN, died Sunday, July 1, 2001, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident on the Tunnelton Road. Born on June 10, 1966, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of Larry Sr. and Mollie (Fields) Judah. He married Melissa "Missy" Hunter on October 26, 1990, and she survives.

Surviving with his wife are one son, Matthew Judah, at home; one daughter Alyssa Judah, at home; his mother of Bedford, IN; one sister, Karen Mowry of Bedford, IN; his paternal grandmother, Mary Judah of Oolitic, IN; and one nephew, Landon Mowry of Bedford, IN; He was preceded in death by his father in 1990; his paternal grandfather, and his maternal grandparents.

He was a truck driver.

Woody – Margaret M. "Mickey" Woody of Bedford, IN, died Sunday, July 1, 2001, at her residence. Born on February 3, 1944, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Louis and Thelma (Fortner) Abel. She married James L. Woody on June 5, 1972, and he survives.

Surviving with her husband are one daughter, Robin E. Woody of Bedford, IN; her mother, Thelma Abel of Bedford, IN; one grandson, and one granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her father; one son, Larry Copeland; and one brother, Thomas Abel.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Ladies Bowling League.
