11/30/01

Peyton – Ronald Charles Peyton of Bedford, IN, died Friday, November 30, 2001, at his residence. Born on December 1, 1935, in Bedford, IN, he was the son of Harold and Edna (Henson) Peyton. He married Margaret Ann Lindsey on July 26, 1975, and she survives.

Surviving with his wife are five daughters: Ronda Peyton of Bedford, IN, Stephanie Peyton of Indianapolis, Joni Hargesheimer, Tammy Sebastian and husband Jim, Jerri Baker and husband Glen, all of Mitchell, IN; step-mother, Eloise Peyton of Anderson, IN; one sister, Linda Clear of Washington; one brother, Norman Peyton of Anderson, IN; three half-brothers: Jerry Henson and Jim Henson, both of Bedford, IN, and Rick Henson of Bloomington, IN; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a twin brother, Don; and a sister, Norma Puier.

He was a retired employee of GM Powertrain and a U.S. Navy veteran. He was a member of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local #16, a former board member of Hoosier Hills Credit Union and had served on the board of South Lawrence Utilities.

Services for Ronald Peyton will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday, December 3rd, at Chastain Funeral Home with Bro. Josh Brumfield officiating. Burial will follow in Mitchell Cemetery with graveside military rites accorded by members of Cecil C. Martin American Legion Post #250 and Marvin R. Davis Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #9107. Short – Marjorie M. Short of Bedford, IN, died Friday, November 30, 2001, at her residence. Born on October 3, 1927, in Mitchell, IN, she was the daughter of Otto and Bernice (Bundy) Browning. She married Roy E. Short on February 8, 1947, and he survives.

Surviving with her husband are one daughter, Sandy Landreth of Bedford, IN; one son, Brett Short of Bedford, IN; one grandson, two granddaughters, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Betty Brewer and Rosemary Chapman; and one brother, Jimmy Browning.

She was a homemaker and a 1945 graduate of Mitchell High School. She was a member of the Englewood Baptist Church.

Services for Marjorie Short will be at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 4th, at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home with Pastor David Ferry officiating. Burial will follow in Cresthaven Memory Gardens. Friends may call from 3-8 p.m. Monday at the Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home.

Bullock – Robert F. Bullock of Bedford, IN, formerly of Paoli, IN, died Thursday, November 29, 2001, at the Core Nursing & Rehab. Center. Born on June 20, 1918, in Lake City, TN, he was the son of Silas and Nora (Hatmaker) Bullock. He married Lucille Foster in April 1939, and she died July 4, 1998.

Surviving are two sons, Robbie Bullock of Clinton, TN, and Trent Bullock of Valparaiso, IN; one daughter, Susan Green of Bedford, IN; one brother, Harvey Bullock; nine grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife; one son, Daryl Bullock; one brother and four sisters.

He was retired from LTV in East Chicago.

There will be a graveside service for Robert Bullock will at 2:00 p.m. Monday, December 3rd, at Ridgelawn Cemetery in Gary, IN. Friends may call from 2-6 p.m. Sunday at the Day & Carter Mortuary.

Deckard – Jerry L. Deckard of Bedford, IN, died Thursday, November 29, 2001, at his residence. Born on February 12, 1935, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of Oliver and Sallie (Meadows) Deckard. He married Sandra J. George on September 1, 1957, and she survives.

Surviving with his wife are two sons, Brett and Bruce Deckard, both of Bedford, IN; one daughter, Sally Russell of Louisville, KY; two half-sisters, Jody Edwards of Bedford, IN, and Barbara Grinstead of Blacklick, OH; one step-brother, Bill Davis of Bedford, IN; and five grandchildren.

He was a farmer and bus driver for thirty years, an EMT at Dunn Hospital, and a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and the American Legion Gillen Post #33.

Chandler – Beatrice Mae Chandler of Bedford, IN, died Wednesday, November 28, 2001, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on May 17, 1916, in Danville, IL, she was the daughter of Pearl and Blanche (Craig) Coglazier. She married Elza J. Chandler on December 30, 1941, and he died September 19, 1985.

Surviving are three daughters: Ginny Hawley of Bloomington, IN, Jeanette Silvers of Oolitic, IN, and Marsha Ryan of Bedford, IN; two sons, Russell Chandler and Arnold Chandler, both of Bedford, IN; ten grandchildren, and twenty-one great-grandchildren.

She was self-employed in professional cleaning service and was of Baptist faith.

Services for Beatrice Chandler will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 1st, at the Day & Carter Mortuary with Johnny Johnson and the Rev. Merla Craig officiating. Neal – Lois J. Neal of Bedford, IN, died Monday, November 26, 2001, at the Bedford Regional Medical Center. Born on May 7, 1922, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of William L. and Okabelle, (Mitchell) Ritter. She married Vernon P). Neal on September 19, 1942, in Lawrence County, IN, and he died on April 21, 1965.

Surviving are two sons, Ronald Duane Neal and wife Eugenia of Panama City, FL, and Dennis Ray Neal and wife Rehna of Bedford, IN; one grandson, three step-grandsons, one great granddaughter, one step-great-grandchildren, seven step-great-grandsons, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; three brothers: Harrison, Berlin, and Fred Ritter; and one sister, Lorene Carli.

She retired from N.A.D. Crane in 1979. She was a member of Dive Christian Church, Dive Ladies Aid, and Dive Seniors Group.

Services for Lois Neal will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, November 29, 2001, at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home with the Rev. Joe Lintz and Johnny Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Mitchell Cemetery. Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday and 1-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home.

Tapp – Elizabeth Anne Tapp of Bedford, IN, died Monday, November 26, 2001, at the Hospitality House. Born on September 26, 1925, in Bedford, IN, she was the daughter of Frank and Louise (Craig) Chastain. She married Ray Tapp on August 9, 1946, and he died June 20, 1991.

Surviving are two daughters, Rae Ann Gardner of Bedford, IN, and Kitty Brim of Indianapolis; one son, Philip Tapp of Bloomington, IN; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband and one sister, June Jones.

A homemaker, she was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, Ladies Auxiliary of American Legion Gillen Post #33, charter member of the Eagles Auxiliary and charter member of V.F.W. Auxiliary of Oolitic.

There will be no calling hours for Elizabeth Tapp, but a memorial service will be scheduled at a later date. The family asks that friends consider memorial contributions be made to St. John's Episcopal Church. Arrangements are under the direction of the Day & Carter Mortuary.

Baker – Virginia Baker of Bedford, IN, died Saturday, November 24, 2001, at the Hospitality House. Born on October 28, 1917, in Jackson County, IN, she was the daughter of Will A. and Bess (Shiek) Clark. She married Asher Baker on January 21, 1935, and he died on June 3, 1999.

Surviving are two daughters, Patricia Ann Rose of Livingston, TX, and Gretchen L. Loman of Greensboro, NC; four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; and infant brother; and one sister, Betty Wilcox.

She was a homemaker.

Oakley – Sylvester Oakley of Oolitic, IN, died Friday, November 23, 2001, at his residence. Born on June 30, 1926, in Webster County, KY, he was the son of George and Sarah (Elizabeth) Oakley. He married Julia Maureen Carr on June 27, 1977, and she died on January 16, 1995.

Surviving are one son, Mike Oakley of Lyons, IN; two step-sons, Ron Miller of Jasper, IN, and Donald J. Denny of Mitchell, IN; one daughter, Sylvia Bower of Yuba City, CA; two grandsons and one granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife; two brothers, Cornelius and Elvis Oakley; three sisters: Ernestine Rakestraw, Anna Brown, and Iona Odom; and one grandson, Jeremy Oakley.

He was a carpenter and a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Jointers Union Local #1664.

Services for Sylvester Oakley will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 28th, at the Day & Carter Mortuary with the Rev. Wade Judy officiating. Brick – Aurelia N. Brick of Sheboygan, WI, died Thursday, November 22, 2001, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on January 29, 1909, in Sheboygan, WI, she was the daughter of Otto and Clara (Knoener) Thiel. She married Peter J. Brick, and he died in 1990.

Surviving are three sons: LeRoy Brick of Mercer Island, WA, Floyd Brick of Bedford, IN, and James Brick of Winter Springs, FL; one sister, Erna Brick of California; two sisters-in-law, Rita Thiel and Arline Thiel; seven grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

She was a member of First Church of God in Bedford.

Ray – Margie O. Ray of Bedford, IN, died Tuesday, November 20, 2001, at St. Vincent Hospital in Green Bay, WI. Born on March 12, 1924, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Opal and Ella (Faubion) Henderson. She married Carroll Ray and he died on July 26, 1996.

Surviving are one daughter, Beverly Kasprzak of Green Bay, WI; one son, Mark Ray of Bedford, IN; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband and one brother, Dutch Mellinger.

She was a homemaker and a member of the First Christian Church and Ladies Auxiliary.

Eaton – Charles (Chuck) Franklin Eaton of Lake Wales, FL, formerly of Bedford, IN, died Monday, November 19, 2001, at his residence. Born on July 20, 1932, in Kokomo, IN, he was the son of Walter O'Dell and Ruth Jane (Stewart) Eaton. He married Julia Peck on July 13, 1952, and she survives.

Surviving with his wife are four sons: David Michael Eaton of Mitchell, IN, Mark O'Dell Eaton of Shoals, IN, Scott Wayne Eaton of Swansboro, NC, and Patrick Joseph Eaton of Indianapolis; eight grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.

He was a retired autoworker at General Motors Allison Division in Indianapolis. He was a member of Ham Radio Club of Lake Wales, FL, American Legion Post #8, Central Florida Jazz Society, and attended the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Silverville, IN.

Services for Charles Eaton will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, November 24th, at the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Silverville with Bro. Mark Eaton officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Pleasant Baptist Cemetery in Silverville. Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Friday at the Day & Carter Mortuary.

Tindall – Robert D. Tindall of Jacksonville, FL, formerly of Bedford, IN, died Monday, November 19, 2001, at his residence. Born on May 1, 1930, in Bedford, IN, he was the son of James and Gertrude (Davis) Tindall. He married Judith Robertson, and she survives.

Surviving with his wife are one daughter, Luanne Wilbur of Jacksonville, FL; two grandsons; and three step0brothers: Sam, Wilbur, and Oscar Webb, all os Bedford, IN. He was preceded in death by his parents.

He retired in 1999 as owner of the Tindall Insurance Agency in Bedford and was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Navy. He had attended Indiana University and was a member of the First Baptist Church.

Hill – Carolyn Ann Hill of Fredricksburg, VA, formerly of Bedford, IN, died unexpectedly on Sunday, November 18, 2001 at her residence. Born on July 25, 1947, in Bedford, IN, she was the daughter of James L. and Esther M. (Hall) Hill.

Surviving are her mother, Esther Hill of Bedford, IN; one sister, Sherry M. Cummings of Bedford, IN; several aunts, uncles, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her father, James Hill on March 17, 1986; one brother, James R. Hill on June 20, 1981; and one sister, Marilyn Anne Hill (her twin) on October 11, 2001; maternal grandparents, Oral L. and Addie (Jackson) Hall; and paternal grandparents, Lawrence and Monclova (Fields) Hill.

She was a Sergeant First Class in the U.S. Army, retiring after twenty years due to disability. A 1965 graduate of Bedford High School, she attended Indiana University and was a member of John Wallace Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and was of the Christian faith.

There will be a memorial service for Carolyn Hill at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 1st, at the Day & Carter Mortuary with the Rev. Gary Cornwell officiating. Interment will follow in Green Hill Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. until the service hour Saturday at the Day & Carter Mortuary.

Fox – Ephraim Fox of Mitchell, IN, died Saturday, November 17, 2001, at Mitchell Manor. Born on April 20, 1923, in North Caroline, he was the son of Roy and Deskie (Hayes) Fox. He married Mary C. Perkins on December 22, 1979, and she survives.

Surviving with his wife are four step-daughters: Junice Anderson and Marcie Ford, both of Mitchell, IN, Rebecca Wade of Marshall, MI, and Cleata Kirkman of Bedford, IN; one brother, Dr. Silas Fox of Myrtle Creek, OR; six step-grandchildren, seven step-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

He was a retired sandstone worker in Huron, IN, and was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church of Bedford, where he served as a deacon.

Services for Ephraim Fox will be at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 20th, at the Day & Carter Mortuary with Pastors Mike Robertson and Bob Helm officiating. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. in Maple Hill Cemetery in Plainfield, IN. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Monday at the Day & Carter Mortuary in Bedford.

King – Jason R. King of Bedford, IN, died Saturday, November 17, 2001, in Mitchell, IN. Born on April 16, 1976, in Bedford, IN, he was the son of Annette King French.

Surviving are his mother, Annette of Bedford, IN; one brother, Brandon Gabhart of Bedford, IN; grandmother, Deloris Dugger of Bedford, IN; step-father, Tom French of Bedford, IN; one niece, Hallee Gabhart; one uncle, Richard King of Bedford; two aunts, Carol May and Lori Kern, both of Bedford; and seven cousins. He was preceded in death by two grandfathers, Winiford King and J.C. Dugger.

He attended the First Church of the Nazarene.

Bailey – Gladys A. Bailey of Heltonville, IN, died Friday, November 16, 2001, at Bloomington Hospital. Born on July 9, 1921, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Oval and Louie (Allen) Whitted. She married William Bailey, and he survives.

Surviving with her husband are four sons: Carl, Duane, and Dennis Bailey, all of Bedford, IN, and Roger Bailey of Heltonville, IN; six daughters: Verla Norman of Brownstown, IN, Marilyn Grissom of Florida, Marian Bartlett of Heltonville, IN, Ingrid Ann Hornback of Greenwood, IN, Rita Gray of Vallonia, IN, and Shana Hobson of Bedford, IN; one brother, Gerald Whitted of Heltonville, IN; twenty-five grandchildren, forty-four great-greatchildren, and nine great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, Lester and Ronnie Bailey.

She was a homemaker and a member of Mundell Christian Church.

Services for Gladys Bailey will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, November 20th, at Mundell Christian Church with the Rev. John Wisley officiating. Burial will follow in Mundell Christian Church Cemetery. Harrell – Herbert Dale Harrell died Friday, November 16, 2001, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on May 8, 1921, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of John and Lula (Helton) Harrell. He married Violet Turner on February 1, 1947, in Bedford, IN, and she survives.

Surviving with his wife are two daughters, Christie Lee Spires and Donna Lou Evans, both of Heltonville, IN; two granddaughters and three grandsons. He was preceded in death by one brother, Donald Lee Harrell.

He was a retired mail carrier for the Heltonville Post Office, was fire warden for the Hoosier National Forest for 42 years, operated the family business (The Pumpkin Patch and Indian Corn) after 1976, worked at Central Foundry, and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving aboard the USS Flusser during World War II. He served many years as scorekeeper for the Heltonville High School basketball team and was a member of Wild Life Turkey Federation, American Legion, Heltonville Area Vets, and the Heltonville Baptist Church.

Services for Herbert Harrell will be at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 20th, at Jones Funeral Home with the Rev. James Stevens officiating. Burial will follow in Gilgal Cemetery. Friends may call from 4-9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Hedrick – Francis "Bud" Hedrick of Bedford, IN, formerly of Indianapolis and Greenfield, IN, died Thursday, November 15, 2001, at Bloomington Hospital. Born on August 25, 1929, iin Henry County, IN, he was the son of Frank C. and Maude B. (Shaw) Hedrick. He married Carol Ann Kerns on January 1, 1967 in Indianapolis, and she survives.

Surviving with his wife are five children: Tammy Hedrick Newcomb-Gregg and Mark Mayhew, both of Greenfield, IN, Angie Hedrick Pickett and Becky Hedrick Mosley, both of Indianapolis, and Debbie Mayhew Hodge of Bedford, IN; one sister, Gladys Delay of Sandy, OR; ten grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Frank and William Hedrick: and two sisters, Imogene and Naomi.

He was a licensed barber for fifty years, and in 1988 he retired from Borden Milk in Indianapolis. He recently completed 21 years of continuous sobriety with AA and was a member of Saltillo Christian Church.

Services for "Bud" Hedrick will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 17th, at Hendryx Mortuary on East Washington Street in Indianapolis. Visitation at Hendryx Mortuary will be from 10 a.m. until the service time Saturday. Burial will follow at Hedricksburg Cemetery in Henry County, IN. Hunsucker – Barbara J. Hunsucker of Bedford, IN, died Thursday, November 15, 2001, at her residence. Born on February 10, 1930, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Clyde B. and Juanita (Sorrells) Watts. She married A. Wilson Hunsucker on October 23, 1947, and he survives.

Surviving with her husband are one son, Devin L. Hunsucker and wife Barbara J. of Evansville, IN; one daughter, Cathy J. Burns and husband Charles of Linton, IN; four grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents.

She was a former employee of Stone City Products and was a Baptist.

Services for Barbara Hunsucker will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 17th, at Chastain Funeral Home with the Rev. H. Posey Gaines officiating. Burial will follow in Cresthaven Memory Gardens. Andis – Mary C. Andis of Springville, IN, died Wednesday, November 14, 2001, at Bedford Regional Medical Center. Born on March 23, 1925, in Springville, IN, she was the daughter of Walter and Lena (Davis) Bunch. She married Roy Andis on July 11, 1942, and he survives.

Surviving with her husband are three sons, Donald and Darrell Dean Andis, both of Springville, IN, and William Andis of Norman, IN; one brother, Russell Bunch of Bloomington, IN; one sister, Daphne Goodman of Linton, IN; seven grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Joyce Andis Sowders; two grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

She retired from RCA in Bloomington in 1985.

Hancock – William E. Hancock of Mitchell, IN, died Tuesday, November 13, 2001, at Mitchell Manor Nursing and Rehab Center. Born on November 4, 1912, in Mitchell, IN, he was the son of Hayden and Malissa (Miller) Hancock. He married Bertha M. Lee in 1936. He subsequently married Mae Willis in 1952, and she died December 12, 1997.

Surviving are two sons, W. L. "Butch" Hancock and his wife, Beverly of Lafayette, IN, and W. D. "Skip" Hancock and his wife, Susie, of Bedford, IN; one sister, Grace Sell of Naples, FL; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, five brothers, and three sisters.

He was associated with his brother, Milton Hancock, for several years in the construction business and later, in the same business, with his nephew, Jerry Hancock.

Hartman – May Hartman of Springville, IN, died Tuesday, November 13, 2001, at her residence. Born on June 20, 1904, in Monroe County, IN, she was the daughter of Winfield and Louise (Hardin) Scott. She married Dewey Hartman, and he died October 25, 1987.

Gray – Ann Gray of Mitchell, IN, died Sunday, November 11, 2001, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on October 13, 1916, in Clay County, KY, she was the daughter of James and Perline (Sizemore) Gray. She married Pearl Gray, and he died January 11, 1993.

Surviving are four daughters: Marie Aldridge, Pearl Howell, and Carolyn Edwards, all of Mitchell, IN, and Shelby Jean Conley of Dunnelton, FL; one son, Fred Gray of Mitchell, IN; sixteen grandchildren, and twenty-two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband and three sons: Ted, Zane, and Mearl Gray.

Sims – Norman Wayne Sims of Bedford, IN, died Sunday, November 11, 2001, at Core Nursing & Rehabilitation of Bedford. Born on May 20, 1927, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of Bill and Wilda (Chenault) Sims. He married Jean Manzenberger on July 4, 1984, and she survives.

Surviving with his wife are two sons, Jerry Sims of Williams, IN, and Tom Sims of Indianapolis; two daughters, Kelly Beyerlein of Florida and Ann Marie Lucas of Bedford, IN; two step-daughters, Julia Prather of Spriingville, IN, and Ginger Hert of Florida; one granddaughter, Sadie Sims of Heltonville, IN, who was raised in the home; one brother, Henry Sims of Florida; and several other grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, William Sims.

He retired from the Milwaukee Soo Railroad after forty years, was a licensed pilot, and a U.S. Army veteran serving in World War II. He was a member of the Bedford Masonic Lodge #14 F&AM for fifty years.

Kern – William Kenneth Kern of Bedford, IN, died Saturday, November 10, 2001, at Bloomington Hospital. He was born on October 8, 1925. He married Sarah Roberts, and she survives.

Surviving with his wife are one son, Bruce Kern of Mitchell, IN; one daughter, Judy (Kern) Baldwin of Longview, WA; two step-sons, Dan Woodward of Bedford, IN, and Curt Woodward of Hudson, MI; one step-daughter, Vicki Woodward of Bloomington, IN; three brothers, Thomas Kern and Louis "Corky" Kern, both of Bedford, IN, and Jim Kern of Fort Wayne, IN; four grandchildren and five step-grandchildren.

He retired after twenty-five years as an electronics technician for Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane. He had worked previously at H.A. Williams Co. in Bloomington, and he had managed the Bedford Airport during the 1950's.

Martenson – Gunnar Elof Martenson of Indianapolis, IN, formerly of Bedford, IN, died Saturday, November 10, 2001, at Wildwood Health Care Center in Indianapolis. Born on December 20, 1906, in Monesson, PA, he was the son of Olof and Agnes (Soder) Martenson. He married Mary Catherine Jacobs on August 29, 1936, and she died on June 5, 1988.

Surviving are two daughters, Cyndy Deal and Theresa Switzer, both of Indianapolis, IN; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, one sister, and two brothers.

He was a retired die maker at General Motors in Bedford and was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

Verhines – Charles Frederick Verhines of Bedford, IN, died Saturday, November 10, 2001, at Resurrection Hospital in Indianapolis. Born on January 7, 1926, in Indianapolis, he was the son of James and Raida (Henderson) Verhines. He married Edna L. Manson on October 18, 1963, and she died February 20, 1992.

Surviving are one son, Charles (Chuck) Verhines of Chicago, IL; three daughters: Lutricia Kersten of Janesville, WI, Sherry Anfield of Chattanooga, TN, and Roxanne Frerichs of Tampa, FL; two sisters, Bernadine Henderson of Williams, IN, and Betty Evers of Fayetteville, IN; seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife; one sister, Dorothy Sanders; and four brothers: James, Linus, Jack, and Paul Verhines.

He retired after twenty-two years in the U.S. Air Force and alter retired from Civil Service. He was a member of the American Legion Gillen Post #33 and Voiture #1192 40&8.

Brooks – Jonathan David Brooks of Mitchell, IN, died Friday, November 9, 2001, at Mitchell Manor Living and Rehab Center. Born on March 31, 1913, in Mitchell, IN, he was the son of Danner R. and Minnie (Wood) Brooks. He married Ella Rowena White in June, 1934, and she survives.

Surviving with his wife are one son, Mike Brooks of Mitchell, IN; four sisters: Mary Rosenberger of Bedford, IN, Charlene Hawk of Orleans, IN, Carmina Tuksal of Franklin, MI, and Betty Tanksley of Mitchell, IN; one grandson, one granddaughter, and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers: William Thomas "Gill", Gene, and Zack Danner Brooks.

He was owner of Brooks Metal Shop and was a 1932 graduate of Mitchell High School. He was a member of First Baptist Church and former member of the Mitchell Lions Club. She served from 196401980 as chief of the Mitchell Volunteer Fire Department.

Isenberg – Roy C. Isenberg of Bedford, IN, formerly of Westfield, IN, died Friday, November 9, 2001, at the Hospitality House. Born on August 1, 1918, in Moorsburg, TN, he was the son of John W. and Hattie M. (Cameron) Isenberg. He married Bernadine Hubbard on May 23, 1947, and she died in August, 1981. He then married Marjorie Fish on April 17, 1982, and she survives.

He retired from the School for the Deaf in Indianapolis, as maintenance supervisor. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army and also a farmer and general contractor. He had attended Tennessee and Purdue Universities. He was a member of the First Church of God, VFW and American Legion Post #33.

Surviving with his wife are three sons, Dale and Dwaine Isenberg, both of Cincinnati, OH, and Donald Isenberg of Charlottesville, IN; two daughters, Juanita Reynolds of Cincinnati, OH, and Roxie LaFever of Washington, D.C.; two step-sons, Douglas Fish of Colorado Springs, CO, and Rodney Fish of Bedford, IN; seven grandchildren and two step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife; one son Kenneth, in infancy; four brothers: James, Frank, Arthur, and Hugh Isenberg; and four sisters: Lena Stubblefield, Bessie Cruse, Mary Murray, and Dorothy McGinns.

Trueblood – Rita Trueblood of Springville, IN, died Thursday, November 8, 2001, from injuries sustained in an auto accident in Johnson County, IN. Born on September 3, 1956, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Vollie and Betty (Scott) Staggs. She married Terry Trueblood.

Surviving are her father and step-mother, Vollie and Judith Staggs of Oolitic, IN; two daughters, Tammy Catlett and Cheryl Smith; one brother, Gary Staggs; two grandchildren; her ex-husband, Terry Trueblood; one niece, two nephews, and several aunts and uncles. She was preceded in death by her mother, maternal and paternal grandparents.

She was a dialysis technician with the Indiana University Medical Center and attended the General Baptist Church.

White – Joyce K. White of Bedford, IN, died Thursday, November 8, 2001, at her residence. Born on July 22, 1939, in Oolitic, IN, she was the daughter of Lacy and Inez (Allison) Elliott. She married Ronald White on November 10, 1957, and he preceded her in death.

Surviving are three sons: Bryan White and Robert White, both of Bedford, IN, and Larry White of Bastrop, TX; two brothers, Don Elliott of Bedford, IN, and Sherrill Elliott of Washington, IN; four sisters: Nita Pruett and Peggy White, both of Oolitic, IN, Carol Clark of Bedford, IN, and Mildred Kessinger of Indianapolis; and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and one sister, Ruth Ann King.

She was retired from the Indiana Laborer's Training Institute in Oolitic and was a member of Laborer's Local Union #204 and Order of the Eastern Star.

Henderson – Robert Dale Henderson of Bedford, IN, died Tuesday, November 6, 2001, at the Bedford Regional Medical Center. Born on June 4, 1934, in Jackson County, IN, he was the son of Gordon and Delphia (Fleetwood) Henderson. He married Virginia Borden on August 12, 1959, and she survives.

Surviving with his wife are his mother, Delphia of Bedford, IN; two sons, Scott Henderson of Bedford, IN, and Brian Henderson of Merriville, IN; two daughters, Kelly Holder of North Carolina and Dawn Blackerby of Mitchell, IN; one brother, Larry Henderson of Mitchell, IN; one sister, Roberta Thompson of Bedford, IN; three grandchildren, and several nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father.

He was retired from the City of Bedford. He was a member of the Hoosier Hills CB Club, operating under the handle of "GMC".

Almond – Esther L. Almond of Heltonville, IN, died Sunday, November 4, 2001, at the Bedford Regional Medical Center. Born on November 30, 1916, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Lawrence and Ona (Speery) Hunter. She married Lee Almond on May 31, 1968, and he died April 5, 1986.

Surviving are one step-daughter, Grace Horton of Clearsprings, IN; one sister, Ruth Whitted of Bedford, IN; two brothers, Hubert and Robert (Bob) Hunter, both of Bedford, IN; four step-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband and one sister, Pearl Myers.

She was a school teach, retiring after 38 years of teaching second grade at both Shawswick and Heltonville Elementary Schools. She attended Central Normal College at Danville and received her masters degree from Indiana University. She was a member of Mundell Christian Church, Order of the Eastern Star, AARP, and the Retired Teachers Association.

Mundy – Ethel M. Mundy of Bedford, IN, died Sunday, November 4, 2001, at the Hospitality House Nursing Center. Born on February 8, 1908, in Daviess County, IN, she was the daughter of David and Effie (Hattery) Andis.

Surviving are one son, Marley Mundy of Bedford, IN; one sister, Lenora Fultz of Fayetteville, IN; one brother, Eugene David Andis of Indianapolis; three grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, two step-great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three sisters: Cora Hotle, Laura Vowell, and Geneva Andis; and one brother, Everett Andis.

She worked for M. Fine & Son for 56 years, retiring in 1985. She was a member for 74 years of the First Church of the Nazarene in Bedford, serving as Sunday School teacher, church secretary, and church board member.

Phillips – Georgia "Jo" Phillips of Mitchell, IN, died Saturday, November 3, 2001, at Mitchell Manor Living and Rehab Center. Born on February 23, 1911, in Wolcottville, IN, she was the daughter of George H. and Nora (Pratt) Cornelius. She was married in 1929, and on November 20, 1941, she married Ross A. Phillips, and he survives.

She was a homemaker. She was a member of Wolcottville Baptist Church and attended Jacob Finger United Methodist Church.

Young – Marie (Tidd) Young of Bedford, IN, died Saturday, November 3, 2001, at the Bedford Regional Medical Center. Born on March 21, 1910, in Jackson County, IN, she was the daughter of Edward and Josie (Hatton) Tidd. She was first married to Clarence Callahan and then later to Harley Young.

Surviving are two daughters-in-law, Mildred Callahan of Bedford, IN, and Peggy Callahan of California; four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harley; three sons, Everett, Kenneth, and Harold Callahan; three brothers, Charles, Elza, and Ralph Tidd; two sisters, Ola Stogsdill and Bessie Joshnick; and one grandson in infancy.

She was a nurse's aid for many years in Florida and was a member of Christ Temple Pentecostal Church in Bedford.

Gasaway – Turley B. Gasaway of Bedford, IN, died Friday, November 2, 2001, at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. He was born on February 7, 1905, in Orleans, IN. He married Viena Herthel on November 3, 1928, and she died March 27, 1979. He then married Virginia Roberts Brooking on September 1, 1979, and she died August 5, 2001.

Surviving family are Barbara Prow of Bedford, IN; Robert Stewart of Fayetteville, IN; Tammy Grigg of Dayton, OH; and Fred Herthel of Bedford, IN.

He was an auto mechanic and had worked for Fultz Auto. He was a member of the Central Church of Christ.

Webb – George W. Webb of Oolitic, IN, died Friday, November 2, 2001, at Beverly Health Care Center in Bloomington, IN. Born on November 18, 1919, in Martin County, IN, he was the son of Stanley and Frances (Parker) Webb. He married Wilma King on July 20, 1940, and she survives.

Surviving with his wife are one daughter, Sharon Brennan of Bloomington, IN; two brothers, Leland Webb and Carl Webb, both of Lawrence County, IN; two sisters, Edith Hackney and Violet Coyle, both of Lawrence County, IN; two grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. He was a retired business owner and a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during World War II. He built and owned the Holiday Drive-In in Mitchell, IN. He was a member of the Bedford Masonic Lodge #14 F&AM and was a 32nd degree Mason.

Surviving are her parents; two sons, Brad Burton of Oolitic, IN, and Jesse Burton of Bedford, IN; her grandfather, Wilbur Chastain; and two sisters, Lynn Mullis of Oolitic, IN, and Lisa Matthews of Buddha, IN.

McCammon – George W. McCammon of Mitchell, IN, died Thursday, November 1, 2001, at his residence. Born on March 10, 1918, in Paxton, IN, he was the son of John Thomas and Ethel Jane (McCammon) McCammon. He married Ethel E. (Betty) Shaw on October 17, 1939, and she survives.

Surviving with his wife are two daughters, Phoebe Jane Simmons of Clermont, FL, and Elizabeth Ann Greenwell of Bedford, IN; two sons, Stephen George McCammon of Laketon, IN, and Mark Shaw McCammon of Mitchell, IN; one brother, Thomas Peyton McCammon of Linton, IN; ten grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Loren McCammon; and two sisters, Frances Crew and Martha Jane Arnold.

For more than twenty years he was a land title specialist for Coates Field Service in Oklahoma City and had work many years with First National Bank in Mitchell, Bank of Mitchell, and was instrumental in helping organize First National Bank in Paoli and Wabash Valley Bank in Vincennes. He graduated from Carlisle High School in 1936, after which he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps, later working as a clerk-typist at the U.S. Forestry Service and working at Ellison Abstract. He was a volunteer and member of the Lawrence County Historical and Genealogical Society, served sixteen years as manager of the Mitchell Cemetery Board of Regents, was co-chairman and finance chairman of the Persimmon Festival, and director of the Mitchell Chamber of Commerce. He was one of the original incorporators of Spring Mill Bible Camp and service many years as treasurer of the South Lawrence Heart Association. He was a member of Masonic Lodge #228 F&AM and the Hadi Shrine Club in Evansville. He was a life-long member of the Church of Christ and attended Central Church of Christ in Bedford.

Robertson – James L. Robertson of Bedford, IN, died Thursday, November 1, 2001, at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Born on February 25, 1939, in Silverville, IN, he was the son of Earl I. and Bessie (Fields) Robertson. He married Nina Sue Gore on June 3, 1961, and she survives. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Vandetta Pennington; and four brothers: Donald, Perry, Harold, and David Robertson.

Surviving with his wife are one son, Barry Robertson of Orleans, IN; one daughter, Betsy Robertson; two sisters, Mildred Johnson of Indianapolis and Patricia Redwine of Evansville, IN; one brother, Roscoe Robertson of Indianapolis; and five grandchildren.

He was a construction representative for N.W.S.C. at Crane, IN and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving the 82nd and 101st Airborne. He was a member of the Williams Baptist Church.

Craig – Nellie C. Craig of Bedford, IN, died Wednesday, October 31, 2001 at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Born on July 14, 1917, in Perry County, IN, she was the daughter of William and Mary Bird (Blake) Gilliland. She married Cleophus Craig on April 7, 1944, and he died January 19, 1999.

Surviving are two sons, Joe McCluskey and James Craig, both of Bedford, IN; two daughters, Nancy Terry and Wilma Donoghue, both of Bedford, IN; two sisters, Anna Feeley of Mattoon, IL, and Dorothy Siegmund of Tolona, IL; one brother, Jesse Gilliland of Bedford, IN; nine grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, six brothers, six sisters, and one grandson.

Sutherland – Bennie H. Sutherland of Bedford, IN, died Wednesday, October 31, 2001, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on December 6, 1920, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of Benjamin and Mary (Covey) Sutherland. He married June Rose King on April 6, 1970, and she survives.

Surviving with his wife are eight children: Joanna Crecelius of Hardinsburg, IN, Jennie Govero of Florida, Herbie Dillon of Texas, Jan Tolbert of Campbellsburg, IN, John Dillon of North Vernon, IN, the Rev. Bennie Sutherland of Ohio, Sandy Sutherland Wycoff of Mitchell, IN, and Dana Sutherland of Pennsylvania; one brother, Frank Sutherland of Apple Valley, CA; twenty grandchildren, and eighteen great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Bobbi Jo Sutherland; one brother, Winfred Sutherland; and four sisters: Myrtle Bryant, Estie Waldrop, Lois Jones, and Goldie Evans.

He was retired from Bedford Auto and was a veteran of World War II. He was a member of Washington Masonic Lodge #13 F&AM, American Legion Gillen Post #33, Eagles Lodge, V.F.W., Moose Lodge, and Hilltop Pentecostal Church.

Services for Bennie Sutherland will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday, November 2nd, at the Day & Carter Mortuary with Bros. Jimmy Jewell and Mike Holsapple officiating. Burial will follow in Hilltop Cemetery. Friends may call from 6-9 p.m. Thursday at the Day & Carter Mortuary.
