05/31/01 Hammond – Henderson "Red" Hammond of Bedford, IN, died Thursday, May 31, 2001, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on April 16, 1929, in Cedar Hill, KY, he awas the son of Denny and Vircie (Dalton) Hammond. He married Rosalie Cheek on May 21, 1948, and she survives. Surviving with his wife are two daughters, Connie Lee (Hammond) Kirkman and her husband, Larry, of Mitchell, IN; one son, Lonnie G. Hammond of Springville, IN; six brothers: Robert Hammond of Springville, IN, Delno Hammond of Belview, OH, Don Hammond of Round Lake, IL, Clifford Hammond, Mark Hammond, and Ronald Hammond, all of Columbus, OH; six sisters: Nellie New and Betty Jo Powels, both of Monticello, KYT, Lynna Turpin of Somerset, KY, Iva Lee Bianchi of Bedford, IN, Raylah Hammond of Winnetka, CA, and Wanda Fese of Northridge, CA; six grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, and one sister. He retired in 19989 as owner and operator of Red's Auto Service and Grocery for thirty years. Services for Henderson Hammond will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday at Crsthaven Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Cresthaven Memory Gardens. Friends may call from 3-8 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday at the funeral home. 05/30/01 Lane – Frank Ervin Lane of Bedford, IN, died Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on October 10, 1929, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of Stanley H. and Anna H. (Williams) Lane. He married Rose Ann Mayo on August 14, 1949, and she survives. Surviving with his wife are one son and daughter-in-law, Steven Scott and Darlene Lane of Owensburg, IN; one former daughter-in-law, Carol Lane; one brother, Loren Lane of Bedford, IN; three granddaughters, one grandson, one great-granddaughter, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Blanche George; and one brother, Leon Lane. He was a railroad worker with CSX Railroad and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean Conflict and for eight years as active Army Reserve. He was a member of First Assembly of God Church, where he served as an usher, and a member of the Railroad Workers Union. Services for Frank Lane will be at 1:00 p.m. Friday, June 1st, at First Assembly of God Church with Pastors John Dodd and Glenn Duncan officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery with graveside military rites accorded by members of American Legion Gillen Post #33. Riley of Williams, IN, formerly of Plainfield, IN, died Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at Kindred Hospital in Indianapolis. Born on January 1, 1917, in Vigo County, IN, she was the daughter of Daniel and Julia (Dersch) Zerweck. She married Billy C. Riley in 1940, and he died in 1994. Surviving are one son, Thomas "Tom" Riley of Williams, IN; one daughter, Margaret "Peg" Kennedy of Robinson, IL; five grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband. She was a homemaker, a member of Williams Church of Christ, and a former member of the Order of Eastern Star. Gallagher of Bloomington, IN, formerly of Silverville, IN, died Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at Beverly Health Care Center in Bloomington. Born on February 22, 1920, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Dewey "Rip" and Ruth (Swango) Hatfield. She married Bernard (Barney) Gallagher on January 26, 1944, and he survives. Surviving with her husband are two sons, B. Michael Gallagher of Evansville, IN, and Thomas G. Gallagher of Bloomington, IN; two daughters, Mrs. Gordon (Margaret) Simmerman of Harrodsburg, IN, and Mrs. Michael (Debra) Hick of Springville, IN; four brothers: Donald Hatfield of Oolitic, IN, Dick Hatfield of Cape Coral, FL, and Doug Hatfield of Lafayette, IN; two sisters, Mrs. Ivan (Joan) Ducker of Oolitic, IN, and Mrs. Charles (Patty) Hayse of Owensburg, IN; and eight grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Wayne Hatfield; and one sister, Chloe (in infancy). She was a homemaker and formerly worked at NAD Crane. She was of Baptist faith. Haverly – Irene Haverly of Mitchell, IN, died Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on May 17, 1920, in Mitchell, IN, she was the daughter of Charles and Lela (Terry) Jeffries. She married Lee F. Haverly in July, 1944, and he survives. Surviving with her husband are three sons: Edward L. Haverly and Charles F. Haverly, both of Mitchell, IN, and Philip B. Haverly of Bedford, IN; three brothers: Charles Jeffries of Dinuba, CA, Gordon Jeffries of Sebring, FL, and William Jeffries of Dade City, FL; one granddaughter, one great-granddaughter, and one great-grandson. She was preceded in death by one sister, Lucille Guilford. She was a housewife, co-owner of Haverly Mortuary, and a 1938 graduate of Bedford High School. Powell of Paoli, IN, died Monday, May 28, 2001, at Paoli Convalescent Center. Born on September 21, 1920, in Orange County, IN, she was the daughter of William and Bertha Jane (Busick) Roll. She married Harry Powell on December 26, 1939, and he died August 20, 1978. Surviving are one son, Jerry W. Powell of Orleans, IN; one brother, George Roll of Paoli, IN; one sister, Dorothy Oakley of Paoli, IN; two grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death. She was a former waitress at the Welcome Inn and the Blue Teapot in Paoli. She was a member of the Paoli Church of the Nazarene. Born on April 6, 1941, in Bedford, IN, he was the son of Charles Robert and Erma M. (Jones) Prince. He married Carolyn Sue Beavers on October 13, 1963, and she survives. Surviving with his wife are one son, Scott Robert Prince of Bedford, IN; his mother, Erma Prince of Bedford, IN; one sister, Joyce Prince Toliver of Bedford, IN; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father and one daughter, Jamie Lynn Prince in 1971. He had retired in 2001 from RCA Thomson Electronics in Bloomington, after 35 years of service. He was a member of Bedford Boat and Sportsman's Club, Eagles, Aerie 654 of Bedford, Sons of the American Legion, and Gillen Post #33 of Bedford. He was of Protestant faith. Wagner of Mitchell, IN, formerly of Orleans, IN, died Saturday, May 26, 2001, at Mitchell Manor Living and Rehab Center. He was born on October 16, 1911. Surviving are several nieces and nephews. Born on November 16, 1933, in Oolitic, IN, she was the daughter of Ted and Lois (Blackburn) Beyers. She married Lawrence Maze, Jr., on May 17, 1952, and he survives. Surviving with her husband are two sons: Ted Maze of Oolitic, IN, and Jon Maze of Bedford, IN; her mother, Lois, of Oolitic, IN; three grandchildren, and two step-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father and one brother, Robert Beyers. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church. Bor on May 13, 1951, in Mitchell, IN, he was the son of Ben and Norma (Day) Grimes. Surviving are one daughter, Tracey Grimes Capps of Bedford, IN; his parents of Mitchell, IN; one brother, Benny Grimes of Mitchell, IN; one sister, Debra Grimes Padgett of Owensboro, KY; his grandmother, Edith Taylor Day of Mitchell, IN; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Gary Grimes; and his grandfather, Lawrence "Chub" Day. Lake of Bedford, IN, died Tuesday, May 22, 2001, at Bedford Regional Medical Center. Born on April 9, 1958, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of Oren C. and Jennie P. (Turpin) Lake. Surviving are three sons: Jeremy R. Lake, Jacob S. Lake, and Stephen D. Lake, Jr., all of Bedford, IN; three brothers: Forrest Lake, Joseph Lake, and Charles (Eddie) Lake, all of Bedford, IN; seven sisters: Cheryl A. Richardson of Indianapolis, Tamara F. Brock, Debra L. Walls, and Martha A. May, all of Springville, IN, and Janel E. Sears and Brenda K. Lake, both of Bedford, IN; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. LaPrairie of Mitchell, IN, died Tuesday, May 22, 2001, at Bedford Regional Medical Center. Born on September 29, 1912, in Bloomington, IL, she was the daughter of Walter and Fern (Hawkins) Yerke. She married Bernard Paul LaPrairie on February 14, 1942, and he died on April 12, 1983. Surviving are one son, David Paul LaPrairie and wife, Dee, of Acworth, GA; one brother, Donald W. Yerke and wife, Myrtle, of Overland Park, KS; three grandchildren, and two nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband. She was a retired employee of Lehigh Portland Cement Company. She graduated from Elkhart High School in 1930 and from Elkhart Business College in 1932. She was a member of Jacob Finger United Methodist Church, American Heart Association and a former member of Fleur de Lis and Mitchell Home Demonstration Club. In 1952, she began volunteer work with the Indiana Heart Foundation and in 1955 received a three year Bronze Medallion. She served many years on the State Board of Directors and remained chairman of the Mitchell division and later served as chairman of the South Lawrence Unit, which won many top awards. In 1993 she was honored for her 40 years of service. Services for Dorothy LaPrairie will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, May 24th, at Chastain Funeral Home with the Rev. Jack Shake officiating. Baker, M.D., of Palm Beach Gardens, FL, formerly of Bedford, IN, died Monday, May 21, 2001, at his residence. He was born on April 22, 1937, in Bedford, IN. He married Kaye Hartman, and she survives. Surviving with his wife, of Palm Beach Gardens, FL, are one son, Charles "Brett" Baker of Fort Myers, FL; one daughter, Elizabeth Ann Baker of West Palm Beach, FL; his first wife, Joan R. Baker; one step-daughter, Auriel Edwards; one step-son, Greg Moore; and seven grandchildren. A 1958 graduate of Purdue University, he graduated from the Indiana University School of Medicine in 1962. In 1968 he moved to West Palm Beach to practice ophthalmology. Memorial services for Charles Baker were conducted on Thursday, May 24th in North Palm Beach, FL. (Davis) Clark of Bedford, IN, died Sunday, May 20, 2001, at Hospitality House. Born on March 19, 1912, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of James and Grace (Moore) Davis. She married Gerald Clark on December 4, 1929, and he died in 1970. Surviving are three sons: Kenneth E. and Vernon LeRoy Clark, both of Bedford, IN, and Richard Dale Clark of Columbus, IN; two daughters, Luella Cagle of Bedford, IN, and Janice Westbrook of Texas; fourteen grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchild, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; one sister, Candice Gyger; and one brother, Albert Davis. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Church of the Nazarene. Born on April 14, 1924, in Acorn, VA, she was the daughter of Elmer and Sadie (Miller) Brohan. She married Robert F. Whiteside on June 26, 1941, and he died August 5, 1995. Surviving are three sons: William J. Whiteside and John G. Whiteside, both of Baltimore, MD, and Robert F. Whiteside, Jr. of Mitchell, IN; seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and one step-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband; one brother, Elmer Drohan; and one sister, Roberta "Bobbie" Geyer. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. Born on December 12, 1916, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Richard and Bertha (McPherson) Mosley. She married Paul V. Baker on March 12, 1938, and he preceded her in death. Surviving are her companion, Charles Cummings; one son, Richard Baker of Mitchell, IN; one daughter, Sharon Harrison of Bedford, IN; one sister, Margarot Dobbins of Greenfield, IN; three brothers: James H. Mosley and Richard Mosley, both of San Diego, CA, and Hugh Mosley of Naples, FL; five grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; one brother, Francis Mosley; and one granddaughter. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church in Bedford. Nash – Roger Dale Nash of Mitchell, IN, died Thursday, May 17, 2001, at Mitchell Manor Living and Rehab Center. Born on December 1, 1943, in Edmonson County, KY, he was the son of Elmer and Leavie (Whalin) Nash. He married Karen Atchison on November 17, 1962, and she survives. Surviving with his wife are two daughters, Tina Louise King and Sherri Nash, both of Mitchell, IN; one son, DeWayne Nash of Mitchell, IN; two brothers, Floyd Nash of Williams, IN, and Jerry Nash of Mitchell, IN; three sisters: Dorothy Clem of Florida, Norma Marcum of Indianapolis, and Joyce King of Mitchell, IN; and eight grandchildren, and one great-grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Delbert Nash; two sisters, Lorene Clifton and Gladys Fulton; and one grandson, Travis Nash. He was a retired employee of Otis Elevator with thirty-one years of service. Born on April 6, 1918, in Connellsville, PA, he was the son of John Ray and Alice Hazel (Roche) Christy. He married Hilda Irene McClelland on September 4, 1936, and she survives. Surviving with his wife are one daughter, Beth Kacher and husband Gene of Mitchell, IN; one son, Lloyd David Christy and wife Cathy of Valparaiso, IN; one sister, Vivian Decker of Silver Springs, FL; seven grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy Heite and Louise Apache. He was a retired plumbing contractor and a member of the Assembly of God in Silver Springs. (Mathis) Sutter of Boynton Beach, FL, died Wednesday, May 16, 2001, at Manor Care Nursing Center in Boynton Beach. Born on July 13, 1918, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of William L. and Sarah (Mitchell) Williams. She was first married to William O. Mathis, and he preceded her in death in 1982. She later married Leonard Sutter, who also preceded her in death. Surviving are nieces and nephews. She retired from Indiana University as a Clerk and was a member of Pinhook Church of Christ in Lawrence County, IN. Born on August 3, 1921, in Jackson County, IN, he was the son of Maurice and Lona Zollman. He married Maxine Hague in 1947 in Washington County, IN, and she survives. Surviving with with his wife are two daughters, Mrs. John (Julia) Wickes of Indianapolis, IN, and Mrs. Jeffrey (Priscilla) Ball of Fairfax, VA; one sons, John W. Zollman of Bedford, IN; one sister, Mary Rose Haverland of Bedford, IN; and six grandchildren. He was an auto dealer for over fifty years, owning the Bedford Auto-Cadillac & Oldsmobile Dealership, and associated with Hubler Auto for ten years following his retirement. He was a licensed embalmer and funeral director at Hague Funeral Home in Medora, IN, for twenty-five years. He was a World War II Army Veteran and a member of the First United Methodist Church and American Legion Gillen Post #33. Born on April 14, 1942, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Ottis Junior and Roxie (York) Dixon. Surviving are one daughter, Rebecca McCoy of Florida; three sons: Franklin McCoy of Illinois, Stanley Wayne McCoy of Texas, and Rusty Albietz of Georgia; three sisters: Della Knight of Orleans, IN, Dora Wittmer of Evansville, IN, and Becky Crosby of Mitchell, IN; five brothers: Larry Dixon, Mike Russell, and Roger Russell, all of Mitchell, IN, Phillip Dixon of Paoli, IN, and Jack Russell of North Vernon, IN; and thirteen grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers: Marvin Dixon, Jimmie Russell, and Bryan Russell; and two grandchildren. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ. Born on April 11, 1949, in Bedford, IN, she was the daughter of Robert and Mary (East) Hillenburg. Surviving are two daughters, Melissa (Missy) Judah and Melinda (Mindy) Busch, both of Bedford, IN; her parents of Heltonville, IN; one brother, Donald Hillenburg of Heltonville, IN; four granddaughters, three grandsons, one niece, one nephew, two aunts, and one uncle. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Maude and Loris Hillenburg; and maternal grandparents, Dorotha and Perry East. She was a factory worker at Visteon in Bedford. Howard Wardrip of Mitchell, IN, died Monday, May 14, 2001, at his residence. Born on July 2, 1920, in Louisville, KY, he was the son of Luther Howard and Ellen (Cannon) Wardrip. He married Vera Fletcher on April 12, 1942, and she died August 17, 1984. He married Mary McKinney on July 6, 1985, and she survives. Surviving with his wife are one daughter, Sarah Reagan of Clay City, OH; two step-daughters, Donna Decker and Cheryl Wood of Mitchell, IN; one sister, Mae Clark of Louisville, IN; three grandchildren, and five step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, four half-brothers, and two half-sisters. He retired from the United Methodist Church ministry in 1982 and was currently pastoring at Mr. Lebanon United Methodist Church in French Lick. During his 54 years in the ministry he served at English, Leavenworth, West Baden, Austin, Clay City, Milroy, Mitchell, Medora, Bono, Tunnelton, Shoals, and as interim minister at Mitchell First Christian Church. Keithley, both of Bedford, IN; five grandchildren, two great-granddaughters, and long-time friend and companion Millie Schlenker of Bedford, IN. He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; four brothers: Ted, Gus, Louis, and Glen Beasley; and two sisters, Lora Beasley Cooper and Clara Ethel Beasley (in infancy). He was retired from General Motors, a 1936 graduate of Mitchell High School, and a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II.
