Harold R. Baker

June 14, 1934 — Dec. 30, 2008

Harold Ray Baker, 74, Bedford, died at 4:35 a.m. Tuesday at Bedford Regional Medical Center.

He was born June 14, 1934, in Cale, the son of Drass and Bessie (Schmidt) Baker. He married Wanda Joan (Roberts) Baker.

He was employed at Younger Trucking and Simpson Trailer Repair as a semi mechanic.

Survivors include his wife, Wanda Joan Baker of Bedford; a son, Mike Baker of Bedford; a daughter, Kristal Arsenault and husband Michael of Needmore; grandson, Michael Arsenault II of Needmore; stepgranddaughters, Mandy Allen of Bedford and Brittany Phillips of Bloomington; five great-grandchildren; and sisters, Marilyn Beemblossom of Shoals and Bonnie Chesser and husband Joe of Dallas, Texas.

He was preceded in death by a son, James Andrew Baker; a brother, Virgil Lewis Baker; and sisters, Barbara June Jerrells, and Lenora at birth.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home in Bedford with the Rev. Charles “Woody” Thompson officiating. Burial will be in the Williams Church of Christ Cemetery in Williams.

Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.

Alexandria M.S. Chastain

Alexandria Mary Sue Chastain, 14, 2216 Norton Lane, Bedford, died at 10:30 p.m. Saturday in Bedford.

She was born Jan. 15, 1994 in Bedford, the daughter of Blane Chastain and Monica Pedersen.

She was a ninth grade student at BNL High School in Bedford.

Survivors include her father, J. Blane Chastain of Bedford; her mother, Monica Pedersen Downham of Bedford; one sister, Destiny Chastain of Bedford; four half-brothers, Trenton Chastain of Bedford, Joshua Chastain and wife Sarah and Joseph Chastain, all of Indianapolis, and Kaleb Downham of Bedford; three half-sisters, Miranda, Sidney and Miley Downham, all of Bedford; paternal grandparents, Jack and Sue Chastain of Bedford; maternal grandparents, Bill and Anna Pedersen and Mary Pedersen, all of Bedford; two paternal uncles, Shane Chastain and wife Michelle and Vane Chastain and wife Susen, all of Bedford; one maternal uncle, Keith Pedersen of Bedford; and cousins, Corey, Adam, Molly, Butch and wife Jessica, Shyann and husband Robbie, Makinah and Logan, all of Bedford.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Grace Full Gospel Church, Bedford, with Pastor Brent O’Neal officiating.

James D. Hornocker

June 8, 1924 — Dec. 30, 2008

James D. Hornocker, 84, Paoli, died at 7:38 a.m. Tuesday at Bloomington Hospital of Orange County in Paoli.

He was a retired truck driver for Gulf Oil and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Delores Hornocker, Paoli; daughters, Sue Fuhrman, Santa Claus, Debra Coffman, Bedford, and Darlene Carmickle, Paoli; a son, Dennis Harper, Paoli; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a brother, Marion Hornocker, Ontario, Calif.; and sisters, Norma Ryan of California, and Margaret Lantz, Arab, Ala.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Valeene Christian Church. Burial will be in Valeene Christian Church Cemetery.

Opal McDowell Sr.

May 25, 1920 — Dec. 28, 2008

James Opal McDowell Sr., 88, of Springville, went peacefully to be with his Lord on Sunday, with family by his side at Garden Villa Health Care Center.

Born May 25, 1920 in Oolitic, he was the son of Thomas and Minnie (McKee) McDowell.

He was a member of Teamsters Local 135, and retired from Crulo Trucking Company. He was a founding member of Calvary Chapel Church and served on the Board of Directors for 23 years, and was Treasurer for 19 years.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years Mary (Kirkman) McDowell; daughter, Judy Sipes and husband Larry of Mitchell; son, Jim McDowell and wife Karen of Bedford; daughter, Gaye Ann Stewart and husband Rick of Bedford; son, Jon McDowell and wife Kathy of Springville; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; six sisters, two brothers, and one grandson, Justin McDowell.

Funeral services for Opal will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Calvary Chapel Church which is located at 1201 O Street in Bedford, with his son Jim McDowell officiating. Burial will follow at the Hilltop Cemetery in Avoca.

Virginia ‘Jenny’ Canada

June 30, 1927 — Dec. 28, 2008

Virginia “Jenny” Canada, 81, Loogootee, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loved ones, at 9:55 p.m. on Sunday at Martin County Health Care and Rehab Center.

She was born on June 30, 1927, at home in Mitchell, the daughter of John and Marguerite (Conkey) Stroud.

Jenny graduated from Mitchell High School in 1945. She had lived most of her adult life in Crane Village and worked years ago at the RCA plant in Bloomington. She also had worked as a secretary at Crane Elementary, a teacher’s aide at LJHS and as a secretary for the Town Hall at Crane Village. Jenny was a lifetime member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Crane VFW.

Jenny was a devoted mother and loved to spend time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by one son, Brian Canada and wife Diana of Louisville, Ky.; three daughters, Karen Hasler and husband Terry, Cindy Ritchey and husband Dave, and Beth Mathies and husband Kevin, all of Loogoootee; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Marguerite Stroud; her husband of almost 40 years, Harold “Lum” Canada; one daughter, Kathy Canada Downey; three grandsons, J.R. Downey, Jason Jeffers and Brice Eric Canada; and one great-grandson, Austin Michael Gilbert.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Brocksmith Funeral Home in Loogootee. Burial will follow in Goodwill Cemetery in Loogootee.

Caren S. Rowlett

Caren Sue Rowlett, 55, Orleans, died Saturday at Floyd Memorial Hospital in New Albany.

She was a homemaker.

Survivors include a son, Edwin Ward, Orleans; three daughters, Tammy Hughes, Carrolton, Ky., Liza Dunn, Orleans, and Susan Way, Mitchell; three brothers, Carol McCoskey and Carl McCoskey, both of Salem, and Kent McCoskey, Scottsburg; a half-sister, Ruthie Morris, Fredericksburg; and nine grandchildren.

A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at the Liberty Christian Church Cemetery with Brother Tom Bostic officiating. Burial will follow.

No visitation is scheduled.

Cameron Shane Wright, 16, 7005 N. Miller Road, Bloomington, died at 9:50 p.m. Saturday from injuries sustained in an automobile accident on South Leatherwood Road in Bedford.

He was born Aug. 19, 1992, in Monroe County, the son of Greg Wright and Shelly (Moore) Fleener.

He was a 10th grade student at Bloomington North High School. He was a member of the Monroe County 4-H Horse & Pony Club, Indiana High School Rodeo Association, Indiana FFA, and an avid basketball player and enthusiast.

Survivors include his mother, Shelly Fleener and husband Gary of Bloomington; his father, Greg Wright and wife Kim of Bedford; one sister, Adrien Wright of Bedford; one half-sister, Ruth Ann Fleener of Bloomington; one stepsister, Casey Amos and husband Brad of Miami, Okla.; one stepbrother, Tyler Collins of Bedford; his maternal grandmother, Norma Moore of Bedford; maternal aunts and uncles, Tiane and Steve Ohl of Bedford, and Gary Moore of Bedford; paternal grandparents, David and Sue Wright of Bedford; paternal great-grandmother, Ruth Stucky of Florida; and his paternal uncle and aunt, Chris and Judi Wright of Bloomington.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, David Moore; and a maternal uncle, Harry Moore.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home in Bedford. Burial will follow in Linthicum Cemetery in Monroe County.

Robert W. Hall

Jan. 24, 1940 — Dec. 27, 2008

Robert Wayne Hall, 68, of Bedford, died at 1:52 p.m. on Saturday at Dunn Memorial Hospital.

Born Jan. 24, 1940, he was the son of Robert T. and Dorothy Jane (Godsey) Hall. He married June Deckard in 1968 and she survives.

Robert served with the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in Germany for three years. He retired from Otis Elevator. He owned Guthrie Bobs bait shop, and enjoyed working there. He was an IUE union member. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and watching trains with his son.

Survivors include his wife June of Bedford; one son, Jeff Hall of Bedford and his fiancé to be Amy Eads of Bedford; two sisters, Phyllis Abel and husband Darrell of Bedford, and Barbara Abel and husband Max of Bedford; and five nieces and four nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and one niece.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Wednesday at the Day & Carter Mortuary with Farrell Sowder and Max Abel officiating. Burial will follow in the Lowder Cemetery in Springville. Military rites will be accorded at the graveside by members of the American Legion Gillen Post No. 33.

Ada W. York

Feb. 20, 1920 — Dec. 26, 2008

Ada W. “Billie” York, age 88, of Bedford, and formerly of Magnet, departed this life on Dec. 26, to be with her Lord, her husband, Glenward M. “Max” York, and daughter, Sondra Kaye. After a brief illness, she passed away peacefully at the University of Louisville Hospital. She was born Feb. 20, 1920, at Magnet, as the oldest of five children to proud parents Jim and Bessie (Young) Harpe. She continued to live in Magnet until Max’s work as an educator led them to communities across Indiana where they developed life-long friends.

She took great pride in providing for her family and always having her home open to friends and family. If a child or grandchild brought a friend along, she would embrace them with open hospitality. She was able to nurture an acquaintance of any age into a true friendship regardless of any generational or geographical gap because she lived and loved life to the fullest by always keeping a youthful spirit. She enjoyed making crafts, playing games of all kinds, hunting mushrooms, fishing, cooking, gardening and traveling.

Max and Billie were married on July 12, 1937, and were the proud parents of six children, Janice Sue, wife of Bill Hamilton, Sondra Kaye, Bonnie Rae, wife of Lewis Brock, James “Max,” and honorary son, Bill Melloh, Shannon Lynn, wife of Brad McGinness, and Sherri Ann, wife of Pete McAlister. Max and Billie spent 67 years together until his passing in May of 2005.

Besides her husband and parents; she was preceded in death by her daughter Sondra Kay York; two brothers, Edward Earl Harpe and James Casper Harpe; a sister Jessie Allard; and a half-sister Virginia Lee Davison.

She is survived by one brother, Gary Harpe of Magnet. She was the proud grandmother of 10 grandchildren, Michelle Ritchey, Shane George, David George, Paige Little, Amy Chambers, Nathan Combs, Chelsey Combs, Erin McAlister, Natasha McAlister, and Jessica Lee; she was the loving great-grandmother of eight great-grandchildren who are Brian Ritchey, Joni Ritchey, Clayton George, Cody George, Adam Glenn, Lauren George, Ashley Johnson, Mady Snack and Max West.

She was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church in Leopold, and the St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church in Bedford. She was also a former member of home economics clubs in both Cannelton and Bedford. She and Max enjoyed several square dance clubs in Bedford and Evansville.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. (EST) on Wednesday at the St. Augustine Catholic Church in Leopold, with burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Derby.

Visitation will be from 2 until 8 p.m. today at Day & Carter Mortuary in Bedford and from 2 until 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the Huber Funeral Home in Tell City.

M. Evalou Suddarth

Oct. 26, 1910 — Dec. 27, 2008

M. Evalou Suddarth, 98, Mitchell, passed away at 9 a.m. Saturday, at Mitchell Manor Living and Rehabilitation Center.

Born Oct. 26, 1910, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Edward and Miriam (Reynolds) Slaughter. She married Wilford O. Suddarth on June 3, 1933, and he preceded her in death on Sept. 8, 2008.

She graduated from Mitchell High School in 1930 and was a member of the First Christian Church in Mitchell and the Dorcas Circle. She was inducted into the Order of the Eastern Star No. 503 in 1943, graduated from the B Bar B Square Dancing School in 1959, and along with her husband, was presented the Key to the City of Mitchell in 1983. During her long life she worked at M. Fine & Son, Reliance Manufacturing, Trav-Ler Radio Corporation, and served many years on the Republican election board, and retired from the Marion Township assessor’s office at age 79.

Surviving are one sister, Joanne Talbott of Mitchell; sisters-in-law, Lucille Slaughter in Florida, Ruth Slaughter and Margaret Chastain, both of Mitchell, and Mary Armstrong of Ohio; 12 nephews, Mark Talbott, Daniel Talbott, John Slaughter, Jack Slaughter, William Slaughter, Ronald Slaughter, David Slaughter, Samuel Slaughter, Frank Chastain, Larry Chastain, Steve Suddarth and Scott Suddarth; 12 nieces, Beverly Lee, Norma Jean Allen, Jane Brewer, Joyce Slaughter, Millie Hanes, Becky Way, Sharon Williams, Martha Young, Cheryl White, Toni A. Talbott, Nanette Chastain, Mary Lou Roberts, and Nancy Titus; and a niece-in-law, Judy Chastain.

Her parents; husband; six brothers, Elbert “Bud,” Wilbert “Wib,” Roscoe “Toad,” Samuel, Edward “Dick,” and Henry Slaughter; six nephews; one niece; and two great-nieces, preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the Memorial Chapel of the Chastain Funeral Home in Mitchell with Brother Josh Brumfield officiating. Burial will be in Talbott Cemetery.

Marsha Evon Brown, 60, of 2418 U.S. Highway 50 East died at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at the Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

Born Nov. 3, 1948, she was the daughter of Leo and Edna Brashear. She married Edward Brown on Nov. 24, 1967, and he survives.

Marsha was a member of the Second Baptist Church in Bedford. An avid bowler, she participated in several local bowling leagues. She retired from General Motors and was a member of the UAW local No. 440.

Survivors include husband Edward of Bedford; two daughters, Yvonne Brown of Indianapolis, and Missy Lloyd and husband Bill of Bedford; one son, Edward “Bobby” Brown and wife Sarah of Indianapolis; seven grandchildren, Jessicka Brown, Logan Brown, J.J. Jones, Isaac Brown, Jasmine Brown, Eleanor Brown, Sampson Brown, and a baby due in January; one great-grandchild due in March; four brothers, Paul Brashear of Dallas, Texas, Thomas Brashear and Jean of Bedford, Johnny Brashear and Mary of Bedford, Dennis Brashear and Janet of Ellettsville; three sisters Shirley Pace and Nick of Bedford, Rita Brashear of Bedford, and Helen Hughes and Edmond of Ocean Spring Miss.; father-in-law George Brown; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

James “Earnie” Kidd, 71, formerly of 1305 K St. in Bedford, died 10:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 25, 2008, at White River Lodge in Bedford.

Born Oct. 2, 1937 in Wayne County, Ky., he was the son of Harley and Pearlie (Thompson) Kidd.

He retired from Thompson Electronics in Bloomington with 36 years of service.

He was U.S. Army veteran.

Survivors include one daughter, Jennifer Kidd of Oolitic; two sons, Greg Kidd of Oolitic and Mike Kidd and wife Rochelle of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; five grandchildren; one sister, Dottie McCullough and husband Melvin of Seymour; and one brother, Gola Kidd and wife Mary Jane of Bedford.

He was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers, Goldman Estel, Leslie, Hobert, Melvin, Novel and Lester Kidd; and three sisters, Arie Rush, Ada Rider and Wilma Kidd.

Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Cresthaven Funeral Home in Bedford, with Rev. Bob Phillips officiating. Burial will be at Cresthaven Memory Gardens. Graveside rites will be conducted by American Legion Post 33.

Loretta Rush, 84

Loretta Rush, age 84, of Bloomington, went home to be with her Saviour Saturday morning at Garden Villa Health Care Center in Bloomington. Born August 28, 1924, in Huron, Indiana, she was the daughter of Alvin Jack and Dollie Jayne (Blevins) Atchison. She was retired from R.C.A. and was a member of Arlington United Methodist Church in Bloomington. She was an avid collector of stuffed bears and especially loved her children and the Christmas season.

She is survived by five daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Bob Hamilton of Bloomington, Joyce “Chick” and Rick Mize of Indianapolis, Penny Gibson Buttery and Larry Buttery of Greenwood, Robin and Tom Stevens of Bloomington and Teresa and Jeff Bland of Springville; one son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Cheryl Blackerby of Bloomington; two sisters, Bertha Young and Erma Pemberton, both of Mitchell; one brother, Eugene Atchison of Mitchell; eleven grandchildren, twenty-one great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two husbands, Robert Earl Blackerby and Everett “Buddy” Harold Rush; one granddaughter, Heather Gibson; and three brothers, Leon Atchison, Buck Atchison and Leland Atchison.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Day Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Kathie Hart officiating. Burial will follow in the Owensburg Cemetery. Friends may visit the family on Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. and on Tuesday one hour prior to the service.

Charles Fabian Boone Jr., 65

Charles Fabian Boone Jr., 65, of Bedford, died Thursday, Dec. 25, 2008 at Bedford Regional Medical Center.

Born June 29, 1943, in Corydon, Ky., he was the eldest child of Rev. Charles Fabian Boone Sr. and Grace Elizabeth (Kersey) Boone.

Charles received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Air Force after four years of service.

He graduated from the Northwood Institute with a degree in business management.

He had a diverse career that spanned a number of employers, including an extended tenure with Ravenswood Aluminum and Mitchell Motors.

He was a member of First Assembly of God Church in Bedford, where he was Sunday school superintendent and led Cottage Prayer Meetings.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Agnes Rhea (Thornton) Boone; four children, Charles Fabian Boone III of Bloomington, Mattie Elizabeth Boone of Indianapolis, Anita Boone-Booker and husband Doug of Bloomington, Ilena Boone-Howard and husband Leon of Madisonville, Ky.; six grandchildren, Blair Boone, Jaden Boone, Jovon Booker Jr., Leon Howard Jr., Jazmin Howard and Shannon Howard-Whittie; nine brothers and sisters, Robert Lee Boone of Indianapolis, Orville “Peter” Boone and wife Dorothy of Morganfield, Ky., Benjamin Boone and wife Rena of Evansville, Timothy Boone and wife Marcella of Evansville, Early Edward Boone and wife Rachel of Louisville, Robert E. Boone and wife April of Evansville, Stella Ann Boone-Houston of Evansville, Vivian Boone-Wechie and husband Samuel of Houston, Texas, and Marie Boone-Clark of Chicago.

An outgoing man, Charles touched the lives of many people, including a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Daniel, in infancy.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2008 at First Assembly of God Church in Bedford. Burial will be at Cresthaven Memory Gardens.

Sallie Hackett

Sallie Hackett, 84, of Bedford, died at 1:20 a.m. on Thursday at Garden Villa in Bedford.

Born Dec. 12, 1924, in Mississippi, she was the daughter of Willie and Oralee (Osborn) Sledge. She married Phillip Hackett in 1940 and they later moved to Chicago, Ill. Together, they raised three children.

Sallie confessed Christ at an early age in Dells, Ark., under the leadership of Rev. James Pastor at the New Galilee Baptist Church. She became a member of the Landmark Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Joseph Sylvester and was a faithful member of the Floral Club.

She had worked as a housekeeper at Sherman Hotel, until she began working at Duo Fast in Franklin Park, Ill. from 1960 until retirement in 1987. She and her husband relocated to Bedford in 1993, when he became ill. She joined the Second Baptist Missionary Baptist Church and committed her service to the Usher Board and Pastor’s Aid and Women’s Ministry Auxiliary. She was known as the mother and grandmother of the church.

Sallie had worked at Chuck’s Soul Food in Bedford until she became ill.

Sallie was both mother and grandmother both near and far, and now she leaves to cherish her memories two children, Bertha Sterling and Roy Hackett both of Bedford; 14 grandchildren, Renee Hackett of Chicago, Janice Nickeo and husband Patrick of Bedford, Michael Hackett and wife Michelle of Chicago, Phillip Hackett of Alabama, Kym Hackett and Marc Hackett both of Chicago, Jasalynn Rhodes and husband Lerron, Heather Rhodes and Andrew Hackett of Pennsylvania, Robert Hackett of Joliet, Ill., Darren Hackett of Chicago, Johanna Williams and Tracy Gist of Bedford; 14 great-grandchildren; one sister, Inez Simmons of Chicago; one brother-in-law, Charles Hackett of Calif.; one sister-in-law, Trudy Gordon and husband Felix; and a family tree of nephews, nieces, cousins; and many many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Phillip; one brother, Russell; a son, Jimmie; a grandson, Jimmie, Jr.; two son-in-laws; and brother and sister-in-laws.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, from the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with the Rev. Donald Griffin and the Rev. Johnny Williams officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery.

Robert Eugene Stewart, 81, Salem, died at 12:50 p.m. Thursday at Meadow View Health and Rehab in Salem.

He was a self-employed electrician, worked with the building commissioner for 15 years, and was an ordained minister.

Survivors include two daughters, Karen Hobbs, Salem, and Diane Craig, Mitchell; and two sisters, Mary Louise Lyles, New Castle, and Lois Jean Traveny, Beford; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Hazel S. Nielsen, 91, White River Lodge, Bedford, died at 3:15 a.m. on Wednesday at White River Lodge.

She was born March 23, 1917, on a farm near Forest Lake, Scandia, Minn., the daughter of Gotfred and Martina Bohman, Swedish immigrants. She married Christian M. Nielsen of White Bear Lake, Minn, on April 20, 1942, and he preceded her in death on March 23, 2006.

They were well known dairy farmers near Scandia for their whole lives.

In August of 1997 they moved to Bedford to be near their daughter, Marilyn D. Anderson and her husband Kenneth. Hazel and Chris were life-long members of Elim Lutheran Church in Scandia, and more recently Calvary Lutheran Church in Bedford.

Survivors include her daughter, Marilyn Anderson and husband Kenneth of Bedford; a son, Richard C. Nielsen and wife Denise of Elizabethton, Tenn.; four granddaughters, Katie el Helou of Beirut, Lebanon, Brenda Benson of San Diego, Calif., Meagan Rountree of St. Louis, Mo., and Joni Nielsen of Elizabethton, Tenn.; six great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Bernice Crompton of Slayton, Minn., and Beulah Opelia of Browersville, Minn.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruth Bohman and Ethel Gillert, and three brothers, Walter, Herbert and Roy Bohman.

A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul Neuman officiating. Burial will be at Elim Lutheran Church Cemetery in Scandia, Minn., at a later date.

Bernard May, 82, of Bedford, died at 4:25 a.m. on Wednesday at the Dunn Memorial Hospital.

Born April 4, 1926, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Perry and Mary C. (Beyers) May. He married Phyllis Turner on June 14, 1947, and she survives.

He was retired from General Motors in Bedford and a veteran of World War II serving with the U.S. Navy. He was a member of the Hillcrest Christian Church and UAW Local No. 440.

Surviving with his wife, Phyllis; is one son, Michael L. May and his wife, Margit of Bedford; three grandchildren, Bernard Michael May, Tiffany Lynn May and Robert Layne May; seven great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, John D. and Claude Edward May; and one sister, Juanita Turner.

Private graveside services will be conducted at Green Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Johnny Turner and the Rev. Charlie Scott officiating. Burial will follow.

Sarah J. McGregor, 30, Huntingburg, died at 2:38 p.m. Tuesday, in the emergency room of Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center in Jasper, due to injuries suffere in an auto accident. She was 37 weeks pregnant with daughter, Ariana Bridgette McGregor, who was delivered in the emergency room following the accident and declared dead at 2:09 p.m., Tuesday.

She had worked at Kimball Electronics in Jasper.

Survivors include her husband, Archibald A. McGregor, Huntingburg; one son, Jakob Allen Basham, at home; one daughter, Kaylee Rose Basham, at home; her mother and stepfather, Debra (John) Bement, Taswell; her father, Howard Ridener, Mitchell; one brother, Robert Ridener, Mentor; and her grandfather, Howard Raines, English.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Nass & Son Funeral Home in Huntingburg, with burial to follow in the Mentor Cemetery in Mentor.

Max Connerley, 76, 2104 Williams Road, Bedford, died at 8:40 p.m. Monday at Dunn Memorial Hospital.

Born Nov. 18, 1932, in Williams, he was the son of Jasper and Delma (Stroud) Connerley. He married Mary Ann Chestnut on Sept. 4, 1954, and she survives.

He was retired from RCA-Thompson Electronics in Bloomington after 40 years of service.

He was a member of the Williams Church of Christ and also attended Central Church of Christ.

Surviving with his wife, Mary Ann Connerley of Bedford; is one son, Zane M. Connerly and wife Sally J. of Bedford; one granddaughter, Amy M. Lynn of Bedford; and two great-grandchildren, Andrew and Josie Lynn of Bedford.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Emil D. Connerley.

William D. Hutton

William D. Hutton, 80, of 3264 Lyndon Drive, Little River, S.C., and formerly of Oolitic, died on Sunday at the Grandstrand Medical Center in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Born Jan. 11, 1928, in Oolitic, he was the son of Millard and Olive (Livingston) Hutton. He married Barbara J. Anderson on Dec. 18, 1948 and she survives.

An avid sportsman and sports fan his entire life; he particularly enjoyed fox and rabbit hunting during adolescence and his early adult years. He was also a terrific bowler during his peak years carrying an average close to 200. He had numerous three-game 800 series and won several “high for average” titles in the city leagues. His real delight for bowling centered on the friendships he made with his teammates and other competitors — these he treasured for life.

His favorite sport was basketball both as a fan and player. He followed IU teams passionately his entire life. In high school, he started as a sophomore at center for the Charlestown Pirates team in 1943-44 prior to moving to Oolitic for his junior and senior years where he captained the Lawrence County Champion Bearcat squads in both 1944-45 and again in 1945-46.

Immediately after graduation from high school, he was drafted into the Army departing from Pittsburgh, Calif. on May 6, 1946. His tour of duty took him to Hawaii and Guam aboard the USS Saipan. Although one of his main charges during the war was to guard Japanese prisoners of war, later in life he befriended Japanese people and could count them as his friends.

After returning stateside he spent time working as a hooker (not what you might be thinking) in the local limestone quarries, General Motors Allison division and finally as a “candyman” for M & F Vending for almost 40 years … he was certainly the most popular dad in the neighborhood for both his demeanor and his profession. He raised his children in a Christian home, loved his church family and looked forward to meeting his heavenly Father.

Upon retirement in 1991, he traveled the states with his beloved wife of 60 years, Barbara. He eventually settled and moved to a place he loved — North Myrtle Beach where he resided for the past 15 years. He had a strong devotion and love for all animals, particularly dogs and cats and they played a big part in his life for all of his days.

He was adored by his wife, children and grandchildren and they were the loves of his life. He will be missed by friends and family and all those who were fortunate enough to have known him.

Surviving with his wife, Barbara is one daughter, Shirley Hutton Megnin and her husband, Ned of Bloomington; two sons, Mike Hutton and his wife, Pam of Panama City, Fla., Brent Hutton and his wife, Terry of Bloomington; one brother, Sherrill Hutton; six grandchildren, Jeff Megnin, Cy Megnin, Tom Hutton, Hope Hamilton, Jessica Nickless, Mackenzie Hutton; six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Vernon “Bus” Hutton.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the Englewood Baptist Church in Bedford with the Rev. David Ferry officiating. Burial will follow in the Cresthaven Memory Gardens. Military rites will be accorded at the graveside by members of the Gillen Post No. 33 American Legion.

Warren L. “Shorty” Hatfield, 81, of Bloomfield, died at 4:37 a.m. Monday at Bloomington Hospital.

He was born on July 21, 1927, in Needmore, to Oren Vestal Hatfield and Lillian A. Turner Hatfield.

He served in the Navy in World War II as a heavy equipment operator in the Seabee’s in the South Pacific. He worked at NSWC, Crane in shipping, receiving, and household goods. He retired after 40 years of service in 1983. He was also the owner and operator of A-Line Moving & Storage in both Bloomington and Bloomfield. He was a member of Linton First Christian Church, and the Elks in Bedford.

Survivors include his wife, Rosemary (Rollins) Hatfield; one daughter and son-in-law, Kae Dee (Hatfield) Faubion and Jack Faubion of Heltonville; four sons and daughters-in-law: Jim and Jackie Cooper and Gary and Marlene Cooper of Linton, Rick and Pam Cooper of Sullivan, and Tim and Angie Cooper of Bloomfield; one brother, Dale Hatfield; one sister, Bonnie Kruchten of Bedford; 14 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Harold loved rabbit hunting and was known to family and friends as “Little Ole’ Man of the Woods.”

Surviving are two brothers, Jerry and John Ramsey, both of Shoals; one sister, Melody Prudent of Denver, Colo.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Leathel and LeRoy Ramsey, and Charles Ramsey who died in infancy; two sisters, Jaunitta Stinson and Nathalee Wilson; and two nephews, Shawn Wilson Jr. and Adam Troy Stinson.

Anna (Armstrong) Stansbury, 92, of Columbus and formerly of Bedford, passed away at 4:50 p.m. on Saturday at the Columbus Regional Hospital.

Born on Sept. 6, 1916, in Springville, she was the daughter of Curtis Armstrong and Maud (Bennett) Armstrong. She married Ernest Stansbury on June 8, 1946 in Bedford and he preceded her in death on Jan. 15, 1997.

She was an educator for over 42 years having taught many of those years at Needmore and Bedford. She was a member of the Springville Christian Church, a lifetime member of Phi Beta Psi National Sorority, Daughters of the American Revolution and AAUW (American Association of University Women). In 2003 she received the National Exchange Club’s Book of Golden Deeds Award as well as several other awards throughout her life.

Surviving is one son, Ted Stansbury and wife Barbara of Columbus; one step-granddaughter, Lisa Voelz of Columbus; one step-great-grandson, Conor; a nephew, Stan Armstrong and wife Ann of Springville; and three nieces, Amanda Armstrong, Sarah Nation and Jennifer Walker.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers, Dale and Ralph Armstrong; and two sisters-in-law, Myrtle (Holmes) Armstrong and Blanche (Storms) Armstrong.

James R. Stevenson Jr., 58, of 101 Vista Drive, Oolitic, died at 12:27 a.m. on Friday at the Bloomington Hospital.

Born May 24, 1950, in Richmond, he was the son of James R. Stevenson Sr. and Dorothy Louise (Moss) Stevenson. He married Darlene Alexander on Jan. 15, 1972, and she survives.

Jim was a graduate of the Centerville Senior High School in Centerville, with the class of 1968. He was a sports standout and excelled academically, earning several scholarships. He graduated from Indiana University in 1973 with a BA in business finance. Jim had been employed as a consumer loan officer with the Jackson County Bank in Seymour and Bedford.

While in Seymour, he was a member of the Sertoma Service Club and was active in St. Ambrose Catholic Church. He later worked for Indiana Farm Bureau and was an agent in Lawrence County the past 14 years. He attended the Mitchell Wesleyan Church in Mitchell.

Survivors include his parents, James and Dorothy of Richmond; his wife, Darlene of Oolitic; three sons, James Craig Stevenson and wife Gretchen of Bloomington, Chad Robert Stevenson, and Christopher Lee Stevenson both of Oolitic; two granddaughters, Sydney and Kaitlyn Stevenson; one grandson, James Connor Stevenson; one sister, Cathy Overturf of Wisconsin; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Linda K.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, from the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with the Rev. Todd A. Alexander, Pastor Steve Jones and Pastor Tim Morris officiating. Burial will follow in the Green Hill Cemetery.

Susie J. Brannon, age 72, of Jasonville, died Thursday at Bloomington Hospital.

She was born Aug. 9, 1936, in Greene County to Marion and Keneva (Johnson) Myers. She was an assembly worker for GE. She was a homemaker and a breeder of Boston terriers for 14 years. She owned Brannon’s Bostons with her husband, Marvin Kelley. The couple married May 6, 1985.

She was a member of the Linton American Legion Auxiliary and a graduate of Scotland High School.

Survivors include her husband, Marvin Kelley of Jasonville; three sons, Matthew Brannon of Memphis, Tenn., Eben T. Haywood of Koleen, and Eli Haywood of Linton; one daughter, Emma Mae Haywood of Mississippi; one brother, Sam Myers of Bloomfield; two sisters, Sarah Gillespie of Bedford and Sharlotte Deckard of Springville; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Born on August 31, 1926, she was the daughter of Earl Johnson and Vena (Brown) Johnson. She married John R. Edington, who preceded her in death on August 20, 1992. She was a clerk for the Pet Corner for over 20 years.

Surviving are three daughters, Vivian E. Flynn, Shiela D. Baumgart and Marsha L. Ingle, all of Bedford, IN; one son, Gary A. Nicholson of Shelbyville, IN; two sisters, Pat Reynolds and Joyce Teter, both of Bedford, IN; one brother, Denver L. Born May 2, 1914, in Greene County, she was the daughter of Lloyd and Halda Casner Hart. She married Roy A. Michael and he preceded her in death in 1984.

She was a homemaker and was a member of New Union Christian Church in Bedford.

Survivors include two daughters, Anna Sue (Jerry) Rainey and Donna (Neil) Kelly of Bedford; one son, Dennis (Vicki) Michael of San Diego, Calif.; six grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren, and one sister, Maxine Mooney of Cleveland, Ohio.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy A. Michael in 1984; three sisters, Nellie Hogue, Verna Frost and Marjorie Winters, and one brother, Joe Hart.

Jane Childers, 77, of Orleans, died Thursday, Dec. 18, at Mitchell Manor Health and Living in Mitchell.

She was born Feb. 24, 1931, in Orleans, to her parents, Oliver and Elizabeth Trinkle Hopper. She married Donald E. “Frecks” Childers on Aug. 1, 1950, and he preceded her in death on Jan. 14, 1986.

Jane worked at the former Trav-Ler Radio & Television plant in Orleans for many years. She was a member of the Orleans Christian Church.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Steve and Vicki Childers of Orleans and Kerry and Debbie Childers of Santa Clarita, Calif. A daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Norman Gallion of Orleans, survive. One brother survives, Billy Ray Dobson of Columbus, Ohio. There are five grandchildren and four-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and a brother, Butch Dobson.

The funeral will be on Saturday, Dec. 20, at 2 p.m., at the Ochs-Tetrick Funeral Home in Orleans with Bro. Tom Bostic officiating. Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery in Orleans. Friends are invited to call at the funeral home Saturday morning from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Born March 31, 1946, in Bedford, he was the son of John William and Dorothy (Dalton) Tuell. He married Jill Scott on Aug. 12, 1966. He worked at RCA for over 30 years and was a member of the Bartlettsville Christian Church and Heltonville Christian Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Vietnam Era and enjoyed old cars, and spending time with and spoiling his grandkids.

She touched many lives and maintained her joyful spirit even during her illness. She will be greatly missed by all her family and friends.

Born Jan. 15, 1938, in Bedford, she was the daughter of Oscar Grogan and Maggie (Grogan) Grogan Chastain. She first married Irvie D. Redding, who preceded her in death in 1965. She later married Chester McDaniel, who preceded her in death in 1994.

She had worked as a nurse’s aide and in housekeeping at the Hospitality House, retiring in 1998.

She was a member of Southland Church of Christ and volunteered at the Community Care Center. She also provided care for the elderly.

Survivors include three daughters: Anita Brown of Bedford, Kay (Brad) Child of Bedford, and Joni (Brett) Carmichael of Springville; one son, Troy D. (Kecia) Redding of Antioch, Tenn.; 16 grandchildren: Susan Brown (Kent) Fowler, Sara Robinson, Haley McDaniel, Chris Redding, Brandee Mounce, Raegan Shidler, Kenya Redding, Quinton Redding, Sydney Arter, Paris Redding, Hadyn Child, Asia Redding, Larissa Carmichael, Zion Redding, Sicely Redding and Alex Carmichael; two great-grandchildren: Jada Mae Eskridge and Reece Brummett; three sisters: Shirley Yaney of Bedford, and Zelma Cole and Louella Jones, both of Mitchell; four brothers: Marvin Grogan of Bedford, Millard Grogan of Shoals, David Grogan of Bedford, and Jack Grogan of Florida, and several nieces and nephews.

William “Bill” Walt Jr., 73, 709 Woodville Road, Mitchell, died at 3:38 p.m. Monday at Community Hospital South in Greenwood. He was born Feb. 4, 1935, in Shelby County, Ky. He was the son of William R. Walt Sr. and Mary E. (Bland) Walt. He married Elaine R. Brim on June 15, 1958, at Liberty Christian Church in Orleans and she survives.

He was retired from John C. Groub Co., in Seymour, where he worked as a truck driver. He retired in February of 2000. He was a member of Woodville Baptist Church in Mitchell and was a United States Army veteran, serving from 1957-59, and a veteran of the Marion Township Rural Fire Department.

Survivors include his wife, Elaine Walt of Mitchell, his mother Mary E. Walt of Bromer, two daughters: Debbie Carter of Mitchell, Diana French and husband Michael of Shoals; one son, Darren Walt and his wife Joy of Mitchell; nine grandchildren: Kenneth and Tyler Carter, Kree and Karrie Walt, Odis King, Steven, Cortney, Nakkisha and Sarah French; one sister-in-law, Margaret A. Walt of Bedford, one niece and one nephew.

He was preceded in death by his father, William Walt Sr. and one brother, George W. Walt.

Born May 20, 1921, in Bedford, he was the son of Dean and Myra “Candy” (Stipp) Newland. He married Beulah Taylor on Feb. 21, 1944, and she preceded him in death. He was a retired pilot for Cummins in Columbus and a veteran of World War II serving with the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Free Methodist Church in Bedford, the Old Timers Club of Bedford Airport and Gillen Post No. 33 American Legion.

She was a homemaker.

She attended Shawswick schools and Bedford North Lawrence High School. She was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church.

Survivors include her father, Rick VanMeter and his wife Renata of Bedford; her mother, Cathy VanMeter of Bedford; two sons, Shane D. VanMeter and Nathaniel W. Busch, both of Bedford; a daughter, Lea Marie Busch of Bedford; two sisters, Jamie L. Chastain of Bedford and Terri L. Keith and husband Raymond J. of Bedford; a stepbrother, Chad A. Falco of Bedford; a stepsister, Christy R. Cooper of Superior, Wis., her grandparents, Pete and Lucille Pearson, and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Born Nov. 27, 1931, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Carl and Merle (Hall) Moore. He married Donna Todd on June 18, 1955, and she survives. He retired from the Oolitic Water Works after 30 years of service.

Kedric W. Bolton, 90, of Bedford died at 11:33 a.m. on Thursday at Dunn Memorial Hospital.

Born May 9, 1918, in Fayetteville, Ind., he was the son of Ora and Ruth (Gore) Bolton. He married Naomi Cole on June 3, 1939, and she preceded him in death on June 12, 1986. He later married Betty Bowers in 1988 and she also preceded him in death, on Feb. 27, 2002. Kedric retired as a superintendent at Indiana Limestone Co. after 34 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving during World War II and was a member of Central Church of Christ in Bedford.

Survivors include one son, Michael D. (Mike) Bolton and his wife, Debbie of Bedford; grandchildren, Brad Bolton and his wife Teresa of Nashville, Tenn., and Heather Bolton of Chicago, Ill.; one brother, Jack Bolton of Bedford; two sisters, Jean Mullis and Marjorie Myers both of Bedford, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, both wives, one brother, Duward Bolton.

Leanne Marie Watson, 41, Spencer, died Dec. 11, 2008, at Bloomington Hospital from complications of a long-term illness.

She was born Sept. 13, 1987, at Mount Clemens, Mich., to Ronald Clubb and Doris Borgert Clubb. She married Jeffrey Scott Watson on Dec. 29, 1987, in Bedford and he survives.

She ran her own business as a creative designer and her work has been featured in many publications throughout the country.

She was a graduate of the Academy of Holy Angels, Richfield, Minn., class of 1986.

She loved her family and her dogs Dempsey, Fanny and Millie. She was very creative and loved what she did. Her family and friends recall that she had no regrets and was very happy with the life God gave her.

Survivors include her husband, Jeffrey Scott Watson of Bedford; a daughter, Jessica Marie Watson of Bedford; her father, Ronald Clubb of St. Paul, Minn.; a sister, Kathryn Clubb of New York, N.Y., and her partner Linda Reid; two brothers, Joseph Clubb and his wife Anne of Burnsville, Minn. and John Clubb of Nashville, Tenn.; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother.

A celebration of life was held Monday, Dec. 15, 2008, at 1 p.m. at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home in Bedford.

Merida O. Webb

Merida O. Webb, 86, Bedford, died at 10:23 a.m. Saturday at Bloomington Hospital in Bloomington.

He was born Oct. 18, 1922, to Merida Howell Webb and Nellie (Cone) Webb. He married Mary Juliana on May 18, 1951, at Belton, Texas, and she preceded him in death on March 31, 1998.

He was a retired die-cast operator for GM Powertrain in Bedford, retiring in 1981.

He was a graduate of Poyen High School in Poyen, Ark. He was a member of Landmark Missionary Baptist Church in Bedford, Lawrence County Senior Citizens, Masonic Lodge F&AM No. 58 in Malvern, Ark., and UAW Local 440.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean War. He was a member of the Arkansas National Guard from 1959-1962.

Survivors include one son, Tommy O. Webb and his wife Kathy of Bedford; one grandson, Jason Webb of Bedford; one granddaughter, Kayla Webb of Bedford; four brothers, Charles Webb of Poyen, Ark., Lonell Webb and his wife Vera of Alexander, Ark.; Odel Webb and his wife Deanna of Haskell, Ark., and Don Parker and his wife Linda of Rogers, Ark.; three sisters, Margarette Morrison and her husband Robert of Fort Smith, Ark., Sue McCool and her husband William of Prattsville, Ark., and Carolyn Stuckey and her husband Kenneth of Poyen, Ark.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Vernard and Lindell Webb and his stepmother, Mamie Parker.

Mary Beasley, 90, Bedford, died at 5:02 a.m. Monday at Garden Villa in Bedford.

She was born on Aug. 15, 1918, in Lawrence County to William Beasley and Lillie Fox Beasley.

She retired after 47 years as a nurse’s aide at Dunn Memorial Hospital. She attended Englewood Baptist Church in Bedford.

Survivors include a sister, Helen Abner of Bedford; one granddaughter, Valerie May of Noblesville; one grandson, Mark Richardson of Bloomington; one son-in-law, Bill Richardson of Bloomington; one great-grandson, Austin May of Noblesville; three nieces, Janie McLean of Atlanta, Ga., Mary Ann Ault of Medora and Sharon Shirley of Bedford, and four nephews, Bobby Coulter, Paul Coulter, Steve Coulter and Les Abner, all of Bedford.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Betty Richardson; one brother, Ray Beasley, and two sisters, Marie Coulter and Ruby Coulter.

The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home with Pastor David Ferry officiating. Burial will be in Spice Valley Cemetery.

Lowell Thomas “Tom” Rainey, 68, Bedford, passed away at 3:04 a.m. Saturday at Core Nursing and Rehab Center in Bedford.

Born April 30, 1940, in Bedford, he was the son of George and Zena (Slinkard) Rainey.

A bachelor, he loved fishing and boating and enjoyed living at Lawrenceport close to White River. In his earlier years he helped local farmers during hay season and also worked at Carpenter Body Works.

Surviving are three sisters, Imogene “Toots” Murphy of Bedford, Mickey McDonald of Richardson, Texas, and Georgia Lee Mitchell of Greenwood; and a brother, Roy James “Jim” Rainey of Lawrenceport.

His parents; sister, Della R. Sproles; and brothers, Warren D. and Joe D. Rainey preceded him in death.

A graveside service will be at 11 am. Wednesday, Dec. 17, at Mundell Christian Cemetery with Brother John Wisley officiating.

Roe G. Hamilton, 78, 844 Smith Ave., Oolitic, died at 7:10 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13, 2008, at Bedford Regional Medical Center.

He was born Dec. 18, 1929, in Cale in Martin County to Wood and Sarah (Pipher) Hamilton. He married Judy Sproles on March 10, 1972, in Avoca and she survives.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, and a member of the Grace Full Gospel Church in Bedford.

He was a truck driver until 1985 and then became owner/operator of Hamilton Motors in Oolitic.

Survivors include his wife, Judy Hamilton of Oolitic; one son, Troy G. Hamilton of Springville; one stepson, Boyce “Wesley” Smith of Bedford; a great-niece, Areonna England at home in Oolitic, and two sisters, Irene Hill and Dovie Chastain, both of Bedford.

He was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers, Raymond, Opal, Jim, William, John and Gordon Hamilton; four sisters, Della Piper, Mary Jones, Lillian Sipes and Maggie Hunt.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Cresthaven Funeral Home with burial in Cresthaven Memory Gardens. Graveside rites will be by American Legion Post No. 33 of Bedford.

Helen Kathleen Brown, 88, of Bedford, died at 9:25 a.m. on Sunday, December 14, 2008 at Westview Nursing and Rehab. in Bedford.

Born June 15, 1920, in Macon Co., Ill., she was the daughter of Dex and Ethel (Brock) White. She married Aubrey C. Brown on June 26, 1943, and he preceded her in death on February 26, 1992. She was a seamstress and member of the First Church of God where she was active with the women’s missionary society. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include two daughters, Carol S. Scott and her husband, Ed, of Bedford and Marsha L. Miller and her husband, Eldie of Poland, Ind.; two grandchildren, Diane Meiser and her husband, Frank, Lisa Hackney; great-granddaughter, Kathleen Meiser and several step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and one sister, Hazel Hash.

George A. Reynolds Sr., 87, Noblesville, passed away Saturday at home with his family.

He was born September 5, 1921 in Mitchell, to Henry and Sophia (Frye) Reynolds.

George started as a Union Cement Concrete Finisher before he started his own business, George Reynolds & Sons Concrete. Retiring from his business, he then worked part-time in sales at Beavers Ready Mix before retiring again and moving to Florida.

George served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a member of Woodville Baptist Church in Mitchell, and attended the First Baptist Church of Trenton, Fla. George was a lifetime member of the Noblesville American Legion and Moose Lodge, and was also a member of the Plasters & Cement Finishers Union.

He is survived by his daughter, Sara Ann Absher of Noblesville; daughter and caregiver, Kandice Lanterman of Noblesville; son, Daris (Winona) Reynolds of Noblesville; son, George A. (Nelta) Reynolds, Jr.; brother, Donald E. Reynolds of Westfield ; 12 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Mary I. (Warren) Reynolds, who passed away Dec. 10, 1995.

Robert G. Anderson, 78, of Bedford died 10:20 a.m. Saturday at his residence.

Born March 11, 1930, in Bedford, he was the son of Clifton Dick Anderson and Zelma Smith Anderson. He married Vera Robertson on Dec. 30, 1950, and she survives.

He attended Needmore schools and was a member of Leatherwood Christian Church. He was a retired farmer and construction electrician and previously worked for the Lawrence County Highway Department. He was a former member of Lawrence County Cattlemen’s Association and was a retired member of I.B.E.W.

In addition to his wife, survivors include one daughter, Diana Lynn McBride and husband Curtis, of Bedford; one grandson, Todd Alan McBride and wife Kristal, of Bedford; two great-grandchildren, John Henry “Hank” and Tatom Lynn McBride; three sisters, Alma Giles and Carolyn Meadows and husband Jerry, all of Bedford, and Doris Earl of Springville; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Raymond W. Anderson; one sister, Alice Devillez; and two brother-in-laws, Lester Giles and Robert Earl.

Born Jan. 21, 1921, in Leipsic, she was the daughter of Roscoe and Margaret (Trinkle) Ingram. She married Robert Eugene Tanksley on Feb. 21, 1939, and he preceded her in death on Nov. 27, 2005.

She was a homemaker and a member of Liberty Baptist Church.

She was born Jan. 27, 1924, in Bedford, the daughter of Ralph and Delphia (Blackburn) Sipes. She married G.E. “Jack” Davis on June 3, 1945, and he preceded her in death on May 9, 1984.

She was a warehouse manager at the U.S. Navy Exchange in Kenitra, Mororcco, in North Africa.

Survivors include two daughters, Tonya Himmelspach and husband Jeff of Bedford, and Patricia A. May and husband Henry of Springville; two sons, Ekim Davis of Bedford, and Greg Davis of Corvallis, Ore.; five grandchildren, Marie Haygood, Tiffaney Sykes, Jordan Himmelspach, Quade Davis and Quianna Davis; five great-grandchildren, Lakin White, Katlin Stephens, Macy Sykes, Haley Sykes, and Dakota Sykes; one great-great-grandchild, Aaliyah Bell White; two sisters, Betty Jane Ratkovich of Mitchell, and Frances Thompson of Solsberry; and two brothers, William Sipes of South Bend and Danny Sipes of Bismark, N.D.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; four brothers, Cyrus, Ralph, and Jackie Sipes, and a brother in infancy.

Cremation was chosen, and there will be no funeral service. Burial will be in Clover Hill Cemetery in Harrodsburg at a later date.

Norman E. Walker, 80, of 1191 Rairden Hill Road, Mitchell, passed away at 1:20 a.m. Thursday at BridgePointe Health Campus.

He was born July 7, 1928, in Knox County, to Wayne and Mary (Tevault) Walker. He married Beulah “Boots” Lane on Dec. 24, 1950, and she survives.

Norman had worked as a tool and die maker and was a UAW retiree from General Motors. He was a member of the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, Lawrenceville Masonic Lodge, Teamsters Union and a life member of the National Rifle Association. He was a veteran serving in the Army during the Korean Conflict.

Survivors include his wife Beulah “Boots” Walker of Mitchell; one daughter, Linda Swing and husband Bob of Vincennes; one brother, Richard Walker of Vincennes; one sister, Patricia Chesser of Brownsburg; three grandchildren, Andrew Swing and wife Melena, Erin Hurst and husband Ryan and Jarrod Walker; and one great-granddaughter, Claire Abagail Swing.

Born May 12, 1922, in Jacksonville, Ill., to Ray and Edna (Flynn) Odaffer. He married Peggy Ware Goodrich on Nov. 12, 1944, in Jacksonville, Ill., and she preceded him in death on Sept. 27, 2006.

He was area supervisor for Sears Roebuck and in sales for Hanes Co., was co-owner of Stephenson’s Clothing Store in Bedford with Mel and Mary Hammel, and also was owner/operator of Western Auto in Bedford.

He was an elder and member of the First Presbyterian Church in Bedford, and a member of the Elks Lodge in Bedford.

Surviving are two sons, Craig Odaffer and wife Jeanne of Bedford, and Kent Odaffer and wife Kathy of Yuma, Ariz.; four grandchildren, Jennifer McPike of Ellettsville, Chad Odaffer and wife Tina of Hanover, Stephanie Beaver and husband Mike of Bedford and Candace Odaffer of Bedford; five great-grandchildren, C.J. and Tyler McPike, Carter Odaffer, Nikolas Beaver, Joseph Odaffer; one brother, George Odaffer of Melbourne, Fla.; and one sister, Louise Clayton of Jacksonville, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, two brothers, Harold and Howard Odaffer, and one sister, Mary Thower.

Grace I. Sylvester, 84, of Bloomington, died on Tuesday at Richland-Bean Blossom Healthcare Center in Ellettsville.

She was born on March 13, 1924, in Bedford, the daughter of Samuel and Nancy Margaret (Kirk) McCain.

She was a retired employee of the former RCA of Bloomington. In earlier years, she was a home health care provider, loved to travel, especially to Florida, and was a loving mother and grandmother.

She was a member of the Bloomington Free Methodist Church and also had attended the Lifeway Baptist Church in Ellettsville.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law: Dean and Maria Sylvester of Ellettsville and Randy and Roma Sylvester of Bedford; one step-daughter, Sandra Hollers of Bloomington; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Udell Sylvester; two sisters: Thelma Pace and Mamie Neal; and five brothers: Harley, Roy, Ross, Harry and Winfred McCain.

James William Fisher, 93, of Bedford, died at 11:28 p.m. Tuesday at Dunn Memorial Hospital.

Born June 2, 1915, in Wheaton, Ill., he was the son of William Noble and Augusta (Witte) Fisher. He married Thelma Clark in 1938 and she preceded him in death on Sept. 24, 1995.

He was a veteran of World War II serving with the U.S. Army in Italy, France, Germany and Austria. Jim was a security guard for General Motors and was an assistant manager for Loudens Grocery and Thrifty-Mart for 20 years. He was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, American Legion Gillen Post No. 33 in Bedford and was an avid golfer and bowler.

Survivors include one daughter, Ann Guedet and husband Steve of Rockford, Ill.; one son, James Clark Fisher of Bedford; one grandson, Nicholas James Guedet, DVM and his fiancée Kelli Kramer, DVM; one sister, Evelyn Broker of Villa Park, Ill.; one brother, Ray Fisher of Wheaton, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife and 10 siblings.

Private services are scheduled with burial in the Beech Grove Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded at the graveside by members of Gillen Post No. 33 American Legion.

She was a homemaker and a Pink Lady volunteer with more than 10,000 hours donated to Dunn Memorial Hospital. She was a member of the Southland Church of Christ, the Royal Neighbors and the Brightwood Homemakers Club. In addition to her affiliation with the Pink Ladies, she had been a Red Cross volunteer since 1941.

Survivors include two daughters: Elsie Mullis and husband Perry and Barbara Fish and husband Donald, all of Bedford; 12 grandchildren: Terry Mullis and wife Georgan, Mike Mullis and wife Leslie, Tim Mullis and wife Pat, David Mullis and wife Libby, Brian Mullis and wife Lynn, Kevin Mullis and wife Wendi, Gary Fish and wife Gail, Pam Colglazier and husband Lee, Phillip Fish and wife Carman, Karen Murnane and husband Jim, Ronald Fish and wife Melissa and Tracey Fish; 33 great-grandchildren, and 33 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one sister, Violet Shelton; and six brothers: Ward, Lloyd, Floyd, Marion, Rolland and Paul Harp.

Robert W. Stannard, 87, 208 Patton View, Bedford, died at 2 a.m. Wednesday at his residence.

He was born Feb. 1, 1921, in Lawrence County, the son of Dras and Truly Stannard. He first married Lois A. Strunk, and she preceded him in death. He married Charlotte Malloy on May 5, 1981, and she survives.

He was a retired truck driver. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and a member of Springville Life Tabernacle Church.

Surviving with his wife, Charlotte Stannard of Bedford; are five daughters: Ann Staggs and husband Kenny, Faye Mitchell and husband Kenny, and Debbie Morron and husband Phil, all of Bedford, Pam Tirey and husband Bob of Oolitic, and April Robbins and husband Gary of Bedford; one son, Robert “Bobby” Stannard and wife Vicki of Springfield, Ky.; three stepdaughters: Leona East and husband Tim and Tana J. Winner, all of Bedford, and Regina R. Malloy of Ellettsville; 21 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Nina Arthur and husband Bill of Florida; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by four brothers; four sisters and one great-grandson.

SSgt. Cory Woodard

Cory Woodard, 27, of Bedford, died Sunday at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis following a tragic accident.

Born March 16, 1981, in Albuquerque, N.M., he was the son of Tony and Brenda Woodard. SSgt. Woodard was a soldier with the Indiana Army National Guard. He was a highly decorated veteran of three wars, serving in Bosnia, Afghanistan and having just returned from Iraq on Thanksgiving Day.

SSgt. Woodard was a member of the VFW, Salem Post No. 6636.

Cory “Woody” Woodard was a Rock Star. He was a dedicated and passionate musician for most of his life. Woody was a bassist in multiple bands, most recently playing with the local band “I SCREAM!”

Cory was a graduate of Mitchell High School. He lettered in both cross country and track. He attended Indiana State University between deployments, and was majoring in criminology.

Cory shared his love of fishing most often with his dad, Tony, his mom, Brenda, and his brother, Sean.

Survivors include his four sisters: Jennifer Zanaglio and husband T.R., Teena French, Amie Baltes, and Lorie Baltes and husband Bryce Woodard; one brother, Sean Woodard and wife Kristen; and six nieces and nephews: Richard, Micheal, Heather, Nicole and Rebeca Zanaglio and Jackson Woodard Baltes.

Cory is also survived by all of his Brothers of Charlie Company and the Indiana National Guard, and his many friends of Lawrence County and throughout the United States.

Funeral services will be at 6 p.m. on Thursday from the Elmwood Chapel of Day & Carter Mortuary with full military honors. Cremation will follow.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the service on Thursday at the mortuary.

Born Jan. 18, 1927, in Jonesville, Va., she was the daughter of Claude and Maude (Woodward) Roop. She married Benjamin C. Neeley on Jan. 30, 1946 and he preceded her in death on June 9, 2002.

She was a homemaker and of the Methodist faith. She was a very devoted mother and grandmother.

Survivors include three daughters, Carolyn Fortner and husband Danny, Diana Hall and husband Jon, and Kim Bertolino and husband Tom all of Bedford; three sons, Ben Neeley and wife Jane and Roger Dale Neeley and wife Rita, all of Bedford, and Wendell Merle Neeley of Mitchell; two brothers, John C. Roop of Schertz, Texas and Claude Roop of Mitchell; 20 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Mary Louise (Jennings) Riley, 71, West Baden Springs, passed away at 12:35 a.m., Sunday at Medco Health & Rehabilitation Center in French Lick.

Mary was born in Orange County on Dec. 12, 1936, to the late Robert Jennings and the late Esther (McDonald) Jennings. She married James E. “Eddie” Riley on March 21, 1954, and he preceded her in death on May 22, 1993.

She had owned her own restaurant, worked in the Orange County Clerk’s office, served as the clerk for the town of West Baden, and was previously employed at Crane.

She is survived by her three daughters: Debra Hess, Fort Wayne, Diane Carnes, West Baden Springs, and Denise Riley, Bedford; one sister, Betty Joehrendt, West Baden Springs; one brother, Joseph Jennings, Bedford; and three grandchildren.

Cremation was chosen as final disposition and a private family service will be held at a later date.

Marjorie was a homemaker and a member of the Glenn Lawn Pentecostal Church of Seymour. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Born June 13, 1912, in Daviess County, he was the son of John Cleveland and Nina Celestia (Mitchell) Parsley. He married Mary Elizabeth Simmerman on Oct. 12, 1940, and she preceded him in death on Sept. 28, 2006.

He was a powerhouse operator retiring from Central Foundry in October 1973 and a member of the Central Church of Christ in Bedford.

Survivors include two sons, Clovis Parsley and wife Jeanette of Bedford, and Dennis Parsley and wife Rhonda of Heltonville; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Girdley of Owensburg, and Berniece Baker of Bedford; and one sister-in-law, Adelene Parsley of Owensburg.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one brother, William Leo Parsley; and two sisters, Coy Hatfield and Izota Fields.

Jean Robbins Corps, 88, formerly of 2911 Illinois St., Bedford, died at 10:04 p.m. Friday at Dunn Memorial Hospital in Bedford.

She was born Oct. 5, 1920, in Lawrence County, the daughter of Charles and Mary (Terrell) Robbins. She married her high school sweetheart, George Franklin Corps, on Oct. 16, 1938, and he preceded her in death on Aug. 16, 2007.

She was a graduate of Bedford High School with the class of 1938 and was a member of the First Christian Church in Bedford, where she had served as a deacon and a member of United Workers Sunday School Class for many years. She was also past member of Omega Nu Tau Sorority. She and her husband enjoyed many years of watching children and grandchildren participate in sporting, cheering and dance events.

Jean spent most of her married life doing what she loved best, taking care of her husband George (they would have celebrated 70 years of marriage this year) and their three children. After raising her family, she went to Cosmetology School and worked with Eva Stultz, a dear friend, at Eva’s Beauty Shop for over 20 years. In 1983 she and her daughter opened Hair Designs by B.J., where she worked until her retirement in 2001. Jean always tried to treat everyone the way she would like to be treated, and everyone who knew her loved her. She touched many lives during her lifetime.

She will be missed by her three children, Rebecca Jean Meadows and husband Jack, Larry George Corps and wife Kelley, all of Bedford, and Robin Dean Corps of San Jose, Calif. MiMi also had seven grandchildren, Michelle Jean Root and husband Darren, Mellonie Jan Dixon, Amy Leigh Garrison, Michael John Corps and Shane Larry Corps, all of Bedford, Landon Thomas Corps of Greene County, and Lori Dawnelle Faubion and husband Jay of Heltonville; and nine great-grandchildren.

Wanda L. (Houchin) Stigall, of Bedford, died Friday at the University of Louisville Hospital in Louisville, Ky.

Born Jan. 23, 1929, in Mitchell, she was the daughter of Andrew and Ruby (Roof) Houchin. She married Hayden Stigall on March 1, 1947, and he preceded her in death on March 6, 1997.

She had been employed at the Spring Mill Inn in Mitchell, Sarkes-Tarzian, RCA and Westinghouse in Bloomington, at Tucson International Airport in Tucson, Ariz., and at Stone City Products in Bedford.

She was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 654 Auxiliary.

Survivors include four daughters, Gwen Stigall and friend Joe Easley of Bedford, Kathy Robinson and husband Jim of Ellettsville, Mona Lewis and husband Rick of Brownstown, and Becky Fowler and husband Bob of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; eight grandchildren, Mike Branham, Jason Branham, Kurt Stailey, Kirby Stailey, Jeremy Fowler, Joel Fowler, Justin and Jennifer Fowler; 24 great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren, Derick Lewis, Julie (Lewis) Gillis, Jimmy and Mark Robinson; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; seven brothers, Earl “Jim,” Paul, Clyde, Charles “Chebe,” Max, Eugene and Elmer Dewey Houchin; and five sisters, Pearl “Shorty” Grissom, Lula Grogan, Chlorine “Dutch” Sanders, Maxine Tafflinger and Anna Mae Houchin.

James Edward Goff

James Edward Goff, 72, of Williams, died 3:27 a.m. Friday, Dec.5, 2008, at Westview Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Bedford.

Born Aug. 30, 1936, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Lexington, Ky., he was the son of Charles Louis Goff Jr. and Derl Elizabeth (Cress) Goff.

He married Emily “Marilyn” Baker on July 25, 1964 at the home of her parents, Perry and Evelene (Miller) Baker in Williams, Ind.

He retired from NWSC Crane in 1991 after 29 years as an electrical engineer.

He was a member the Spice Valley Church of Christ, which he helped design and build and where he served as an elder. He was a 50 year member of the Triangle Education Fraternity.

He was accepted as a Ford Foundation Scholarship recipient after his junior year of high school, attended the University of Louisville for two years, and then graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1957, with a degree in Engineering.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, an honor graduate of Signal School at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. He was also stationed in Berlin, where he was an electronic warfare equipment repairman and supervisor when the Berlin Wall was built. He witnessed babies being held up by parents so loved ones could see them across the wall in East Berlin. He was overjoyed when the wall finally was torn down.

He worked tirelessly to bring North Lawrence Water to the people of Williams; he was also a member of the North Lawrence Water Board.

His hobbies also included bicycling, stamp collecting, photography, genealogy and participating in the Lawrence County Historical Society. He was an avid reader and enjoyed helping others.

Survivors include his wife, Emily “Marilyn” Goff; two daughters, Lydia Evelene McDowell and husband, David Glen, of Ocean Spring, Miss., and Sarah Elizabeth Hillenburg and husband, James Wesley “Jim,” of Williams; one son, James Edward Goff Jr. and his wife, Laura Helen Hughes, M.D. ob/gyn MFM, of Springfield, Mo.; six grandchildren Chelsea Manda Hillenburg, Hannah Glenn McDowell, Evan Wesley Hillenburg, Elizabeth Emily McDowell, Molly Kaitlyn Goff and Megan Elizabeth Goff; one brother, Charles Louis Goff III and his wife, Emma Tess (Robertson) Goff, of Falls of Rough, Ky.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one infant brother, William Robert Goff.

Ronald C. Neely, 67, Mitchell passed away at 2:55 AM Friday, Dec. 5th, 2008, at the Bedford Regional Medical Center.

Born Nov. 8th, 1941 in Baltimore Maryland, he was the son of Elmer Rae and Anna Lee (Rasnic) Neely.

He was a trucker and had been employed by the Bedford Vault Company. Ronald was a US Army Veteran and belonged to the Mitchell Softball League in the 1970's.

Surviving are his children, Ronna Roberts and husband Anthony of Mitchell, Ronald C. Neely the 2nd and wife Melissa of Bloomington and Robin Terrell of Mitchell; Brothers, Delmar Neely of Mooresville and Charlie Neely of Greenwood; sisters, Kathy Hadipour, Kansas, Linda Rust of Fort Wayne, Ina Quinn of Tennessee, Mary Anderson of Oregon and Jan Gregory of Bedford, and grandchildren, Ashley Roach, Lindsey Roberts, Justin Terrell, Tia Brooking, Kelsey Roberts, Evan Roberts, Ann Neely, Amara Neely and Trayson Terrell, and three great grandchildren.

His parents and sister, Sandy Vaught, preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM Monday, December 8th, in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home with Rev. Mark Bechtel officiating. Burial will be in Mitchell Cemetery with military honors accorded by Cecil C. Martin American Legion Post N. 250 and Marvin R. Davis Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9107.

Thelma F. Burton, 95, Mitchell, passed away at 1:55 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2008, at White River Lodge in Bedford.

Born Aug. 11, 1913, in Mitchell, she was the daughter of John Stephen and Mary (Trowbridge) Isom. She married Newton Paul Burton and he preceded her in death on Jan. 18, 1970.

She and her husband owned and operated Burton Orchards. She graduated from Mitchell High School in 1931 and was a member of Liberty Baptist Church.

Her parents; husband; son, John Paul Burton, Nov. 1, 1956; brothers, Stephen Escoe “Pete” Isom, Warren Rex Isom, Gay Isom, Carl Isom, Lowell Isom, Willie Isom and Opal Isom; and sisters Hazel Sanders, Pansy Isom, Lucille Isom, Osa Sanders, Avis King and Roxie Riggs preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5, in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home with Rev. Eric Kersey officiating. Burial will be in the Liberty Baptist Cemetery.

Larry E. McCord

Larry E. McCord, 65, Cadiz, died Monday at his home.

He retired from Delco Remy in Anderson in 1992, co-owned L-P Greenhouse for the past 30 years, and coached youth baseball.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years Polly (Riggs) McCord of Cadiz; three sons, David (Kathy) McCord of Middletown, Tom (Andrea) McCord of Mitchell, and Rusty (Gayla) McCord of Middletown; a sister, Beverly Pope of Cape Coral, Fla.; a brother Philip McCord of Greenfield; seven grandchildren; two step-grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Funeral services will be Friday at 10 a.m. at Condo and Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson. Burial will follow at Mechanicsburg Cemetery.

Lucile Dixon Wever

Lucile Dixon Wever, 99, Colorado Springs, Colo., died Nov. 23 at 12:15 a.m. at Sterling House of Briargate in Colorado Springs.

Born May 7, 1909, in Pinhook, she was the daughter of Guy and Lola Dixon. She married Melvin A. Wever on April 30, 1929.

Before her marriage, she taught in a one-room school in Lawrence County for two years. After her marriage, she was a wife, homemaker and mother. After her son graduated from high school, she served as a claims auditor with the Army Finance Center at Fort Benjamin Harrison for several years. After her marriage, she resided in Chicago, Indianapolis and Greenwood. She was a resident at Greenwood Village South for over 20 years before she moved to Colorado Springs in 2006 to be closer to her son.

She was a graduate of Tunnelton High School and Indiana University. While she was active in several churches over the years, she elected not to transfer her membership from her home church in Pinhook.

Survivors include a son, Dwight Wever and his wife Estella Gay of Colorado Springs; one sister, Fay White of Greenwood; one brother, David Dixon and his wife Joan of Strasburg, Va.; one grandson, Kurt Wever, M.D., and his wife Molly of Cripple Creek, Colo.; one granddaughter, Debbie Cantrell and husband Jim of Valencia Calif., and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home, with the Rev. Tim Morris officiating. Burial will be in Pinhook Cemetery.

Allien Magner True Rayhill Bugh Atkinson, 83, of Mitchell, died at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 30, 2008, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley, W.Va.

Born Jan. 13, 1925, in Mitchell, she was the daughter of Dewey and Mae (Lanning) Magner. She was a graduate of Mitchell High School class of 1942. She was a member of Spice Valley Church in Mitchell. She retired from Carpenter Body Works in Mitchell.

She married Gene Atkinson in August 2005.

Survivors include her husband of Mitchell; one son, Tom True and wife Linda of Daniels, W.VA.; one daughter, Lynn Rowe and husband Bob of Oakland City; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three sisters, Jencie Sharp and Judy Morris, both of Losantville, and Evelyn Hahn of Dearborn, Mich.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Dewey Magner.

A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Ferguson-Lee Haverly Chapel in Mitchell. Burial will be in Talbott Cemetery in Lawrence County. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of the service Thursday at Ferguson-Lee Haverly Chapel. Roma E. Vaughn, 84, of 1207 9th St., Bedford, died at 7 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008, at Dunn Memorial Hospital in Bedford.

Born March 25, 1924, in Bluffton, IN, she was the daughter of Charles and Nora (Elick) Decker. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Bedford. She graduated from Indiana University with Bachelor’s of Science and Master’s degrees. She was a teacher for Shawswick, Oolitic, Needmore, Shoals and Mitchell schools. She was a member of the Retired Teacher’s Association and a member of the AAUW. Survivors include one daughter, Nora Coulter of Fairfax, Va.; three sons, George Stephen (Steve) Vaughn and his wife Karen of Greenwood, Thomas J. Vaughn of Bedford Junction, and Eric P. Vaughn of Herndon, Virginia; one granddaughter, Jessica Coulter. She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers Dale, Bruce and Jack, two sisters Carol and Rowena.

Avonda Mitchell-Jones, 91, of 4192 State Road 158, Bedford, died at 8:10 a.m.. on Friday, Nov. 28, 2008, at the Bedford Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug.18, 1917, in Burns City, Ind., she was the daughter of Aldo and Elizabeth (Sellers) Osborn. She married Lester E. Mitchell and he preceded her in death on Feb. 24, 1940, she later married W. Glen Jones and he preceded her in death in October of 1994. She was a member of the Fayetteville Baptist Church; she taught Sunday school there for many years; she was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a housewife and a babysitter.

Survivors include one son: Bud Mitchell and his wife Judith Ann of Fayetteville; two granddaughters, Cyndi Coldren and her husband David of South Carolina; Leslie Sweigart and her husband Jerry of Bedford; one step-daughter, Wanda LuAllen of Bedford; four great grandchildren, Delaney and Kylie Coldern, Sharayah and Allison Sweigart; four step-grandchildren; one sister, Betty Smith of New Albany, Ind. She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; one son, Osborn; two brothers, Jim Bud and Junior Osborn; two sisters, Violet Boyd and Lena Simmerman.

Herbert E. ‘Herb’ Humphries

Herbert E. “Herb” Humphries, 86, Alexandria, died Nov. 29 at Garden Villa in Bedford.

A former Alexandria resident, he lived in Marion from 1974-1983, and in the Rochester-Macy area from 1983-2007 before moving to Bedford.

He served with the United States Army from 1942-1945 in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. He retired from Johns-Manville, formerly of Alexandria, after 34 years of employment. He operated a pontoon hauling and maintenance service in the Rochester-Macy area for several years.

Survivors include two sons, Thomas E. (Linda) Humphries of Elwood and Jeffrey (Kim) Humphries of Norman; one sister, Lela Naylor of Alexandria; a companion, Doris Harris of Macy; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Owens Funeral Home, 412 N. Harrison St., Alexandria, with burial to follow in Park View Cemetery in Alexandria.

Elsie Harrell Jones

Elsie (Harrell) Jones, 82, Heltonville, died Sunday at Bloomington Hospital.

Born Dec. 4, 1925, she was the daughter of Clarence Levi Harrell and Grace Eva McKnight.

She served as trustee in Pleasant Run Township for 20-plus years and also sold Avon and other sales products. She was a member of Mundell Christian Church and the Order of Eastern Star in Leesville.

Survivors include one son, Gerald Jones of Heltonville; two daughters, Carolyn Jarvis and her husband Tony of Bedford, and Cynthia Denniston of Norman; a son-in-law, Robert “Johnny” Basinger of Heltonville; two sisters, Estey Cummings of Heltonville, and Emma Morgan of Oklahoma; four grandchildren, Todd and Reid Denniston, Grace Clements and April Basinger; a caregiver, Lisa Wheeler of Heltonville, and several great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Cecil Jones; one infant son, Gregory Allen Jones; one daughter, Cecilia Sue “Susie” Basinger; two brothers, John N. Harrell and Elmer G. Harrell, and one sister, Florence “Anna” Beyers.

Funeral services will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at Mundell Christian Church, with Brother Jim Fisher and Brother David Fisher officiating. Burial will be in the Mundell Cemetery.
