Betty L. Graber

Sept. 27, 1939 — Sept. 28, 2008

Betty L. Graber, 69, 2212 M Street, Bedford, died at 10 a.m. Sunday at her residence.

Born Sept. 27, 1939, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Ralph and Margaret (Myers) Snow. She married Paul Graber.

She was a bookkeeper.

She was a member of the Red Hat Society, the Dunn Memorial Pink Ladies, and the Lawrence County Republican Women’s Association.

Survivors include two sons: Gary Graber of Denver, Colo., and Larry Graber and wife Caroline of Trafalgar; one granddaughter, Michaela Graber of Fruita, Colo.; one sister, Grace Slowey and husband Frank of Bedford; one brother, Paul “Joe Bud” Snow and companion Carole of Bedford; two nephews: Steve Greene and wife Carolyn of Wisconsin, and Michael Snow and wife Debbie and their daughter, Michelle, of Florida.

A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home in Bedford with the Rev. Bob Dailey officiating. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery in Bedford.

James R. Parsley

Dec. 6, 1925 — Sept. 29, 2008

James Russell “Jim” Parsley, 82, Owensburg, died at 1:35 a.m. Monday at Bloomington Hospital.

He was a retired explosive operator at Crane and a farmer. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include two brothers: Herman Parsley, Springville, and Robert Parsley, Owensburg; many nieces and nephews; and one godchild, Cris Floyd, Bloomfield.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Jenkins Funeral Home in Bloomfield with the Rev. Kenneth Adams officiating. Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery, Bloomfield. Military rites will be accorded by the Bloomfield American Legion Post No. 196.

Jeremiah J. Williamson

May 20, 1980 — Sept. 28, 2008

Jeremiah James Williamson, 28 of Huber Heights, Ohio, passed away Sunday.

He was the beloved son of Mark and Peggy (Tolson) Williamson of Bedford. Jeremiah was a member of The First Baptist Church of Union, Ohio, Huber Heights Masonic Lodge No. 777 F&AM, and was an enthusiastic member of the Volksrod Club. He was employed at the time of his death by OPW as a welder.

Jeremiah loved to kayak, ride his mountain bike, hike and fish, be out in nature, rebuild his Volkswagen Beetle, art and craft projects, taking pictures for Victory Records, and talking to people. (He never met a stranger!) Jeremiah was proud of his decision to be an organ donor.

He is survived by his parents, Mark and Peggy Williamson of Bedford; a brother, Nathaniel Luke Williamson, West Milton, Ohio; his paternal grandparents, Arnold and Lois (Hendrix) Williamson, Bedford.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, James and Pearl (Miller) Tolson of Washington.

Services will be at 6 p.m. Thursday at Hale-Sarver Funeral Home, 284 N. Miami St., West Milton, Ohio. Pastor Doug Jones will officiate with interment at Oak Grove Cemetery, Washington.

The family will receive friends from 3-6 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.

Warren W. Brown, 84

Warren W. Brown, 84, of Coxton Road, passed away at 10:45 p.m. on Friday at Bedford Regional Medical Center.

Born on Oct. 3, 1923, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Oatley Ray Brown and Ruth (Wagner) Brown.

In 1983 he retired from Public Service Indiana. He was a member of the Old Union Christian Church and a Veteran of World War II, serving in the Army. He married Carole Bolton on Dec. 18, 1948, and she survives.

Surviving with his wife, Carole; are one son, Steve Brown of Chicago, Ill.; two daughters, Terri Wade of Bedford, and Linda McCleery of Scott County; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; five sisters, Zella Lawson and Regina Stroud both of Mitchell; Ollie Jackson of Columbus; and Ellen George and Edna Rainey both of Bedford.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers: Roy Brown, Charlie Brown and Kenneth Brown.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Old Union Cemetery. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. today at Day & Carter Mortuary.

Fredrick G. ‘Fred’ Smith, 68

Fredrick G. “Fred” Smith, 68, of Bloomington, died Friday at Bloomington Hospital.

Born April 17, 1940, in Brown County, he was the son of Donald and Monzell (Hoover) Smith.

He retired from Woolery Stone Co. after 30 years of service and then from IU with 10 years of service.

Survivors include his wife, Esta (Kent) Smith; granddaughters he raised, Jessica Dalton of Bloomington and Jodie Dalton of Spencer; four daughters, Joyce (Dalton) Fish of Bedford, and Nancy Dalton, Mary Dalton and Stella Crohn and Ron, all of Bloomington; two sons, Donald Chambers and Vernon Chambers, both of Bloomingon; 14 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Donald Smith and Brenda, Floyd Smith and Sandy, and Lee Smith, all of Nashville; and three sisters, Thelma Keller of New Albany, Treva Edwards and Dan of Taylorsville and Brenda East and Barry of Nashville.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Wilma Smith Wilson; two brothers, Forrest Smith and Robert Eugene Smith; and two children, Diana Sue (Dalton) Pate and Robert Harold Dalton.

Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Deremiah-Frye Mortuary, Greene & Harrell Chapel, with Rev. Jimmy Cain. Burial will be in Valhalla Memory Garden.

Charles Ray Stephens, 64

Charles Ray Stephens, 64, of Bloomington, previously of Massena, N.Y., died Friday at Bloomington Hospital.

Born Aug. 6, 1944, in Dickson, Tenn., he was the son of Clyde Lampley Stephens and Edith May (Oliphant) Stephens.

He was an inspector for General Motors Corp.’s Power Train in Bedford.

He was a U.S. Air Force veteran.

He was a graduate of Dickson High School, class of 1963, and a member of American Legion Post 18. He enjoyed camping, campfires and reading.

Survivors include his wife, Diane Elizabeth (Ghostlaw) Stephens; two sons, Todd Stephens of Spring Valley, Ill., and Christopher Stephens and his wife, Julie, of Bedford; and four grandchildren, Ryan Stephens and Dustin Stephens, both of Dickson, and Alexandria Stephens and Seth Stephens, both of Bedford.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Dorris Dickson.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Deremiah-Frye Mortuary, Greene & Harrell Chapel, with Rev. Timothy Wiles officiating. Burial will be in Valhalla Memory Gardens.

Patty White

Patty White, 69, Heltonville, died at 8:12 a.m. on Wednesday at Kindred Hospital in Greenwood.

She was born Nov. 15, 1938, in Leesville, the daughter of Leo Ralph and Helen Marie (Bagwell) Brown. She married Darrell White on Feb. 14, 1959, and he survives.

She was a beautician and the owner of Patty White’s Silhouette. She was a member of the New Hope Church in Bedford and was very active in her church. She also loved to travel. She was a 1957 graduate of Tunnelton High School and a was a hairdresser for 45 years.

Surviving with her husband, Darrell White of Heltonville; are one son, Darren White and wife Tracy of Bedford; grandchildren, Sarah and Emily White of Bedford; a brother, Mike Clouse and wife Susan of Bedford; a sister, Mona Goen and husband Mike of Las Cruses, N.M.; an aunt, Mildred Brown of Leesville; her father-in-law, Lloyd White and wife Eva of Heltonville; sisters-in-law Letta Mae Purdy and husband Don, Wilma Wright, and Brenda McDonald and husband Gary, all of Heltonville; brothers-in-law, Dale White and wife Dawn of Bedford, and Kenny White and wife Phyllis of Heltonville; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Bob Bagwell and Darrell Clouse; her stepmother, Elsie Marie Brown; and her mother-in-law, Irene White.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home. Burial will be in Mitchell Cemetery in Monroe County.

Paul D. Montgomery

April 12, 1952 — Sept. 25, 2008

Paul Denis Montgomery, 56, died at 8:35 p.m. Thursday at Westview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was born April 12, 1952, in Anderson, he was the son of Denis and Joann (Stephenson) Montgomery.

He was a timber cutter, and owned and operated a gun shop and flower shop in Brownstown.

Paul was an outdoorsman, with a heart for adventure. His generous character and uplifting spirit was a true benefit to all who knew him. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Survivors include three sons, Buck Nazareth Montgomery and Joshua Michael Montgomery, both of Faytetteville, Tenn., and Zachary Mathew Montgomery of Williams; one daughter, Ginger Suzanne Wittifield of Hardin County, Tenn.; five grandchildren, Jeremy, Emily, Amanda and Clay Wittifield, and Orey Zane Montgomery; two sisters; and one brother.

The funeral service will be noon today at “The Barn” at Padanaram. Burial will be in Padanaram Cemetery.

Anabel Williams

July 30, 1914 — Sept. 24, 2008

Anabel Williams, 94, Williams, died at 12:25 p.m. Wednesday at Dunn Memorial Hospital.

She was born July 30, 1914, in Lawrence County, and was the daughter of James C. and Elon (Taylor) Embree. She married Leland M. Williams on Oct. 12, 1935, in Shelbyville, Ky., and he preceded her in death on Aug. 13, 1995.

She was a homemaker and gardener.

She was a graduate of Williams High School with the class of 1931. She was a member of the Church of Christ; the African Violet Club; was a 4-H leader for over 25 years; and was a member of the Lawrence County Rock Club and the Williams Home Demonstration Club.

Survivors include one daughter, Sherry (Elzy) Sipes of Columbus; two sons, Richard L. (Janice) Williams of Williams, and David (Erna) Williams of Williams; eight grandchildren, Julie Prince of Hoopston, Ill., Jeff Sipes of Indianapolis, Richard Williams II of Bend, Ore., Andrea Burckman of Davidsonville, Md., Jason Williams of Boulder, Colo., Rhiannon Cook of Bedford, and Victoria and Alanna Williams of Williams; six great-grandchildren, Cristen Prince and Kody Prince, both of Hoopston, Ill., Asha and Ariel Williams-Lewis, and Noah Burckman, all of Davidson, Md, Peter and Matthew Williams of Bend, Ore., and Garrett Cook of Bedford; and one brother, Frank (Mary) Embree of Bedford.

She was preceded in death by four brothers; four sisters; and one grandson, Jared.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home in Bedford with Brother Mark Embree officiating. Burial will be in Mount Olive Cemetery in Williams.

Ralph O. Livingston

Sept. 1, 1926 — Sept. 23, 2008

Ralph O. Livingston, 82, English, died at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday at his residence.

He was retired from Paoli Inc., and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his companion, Linda Eickelberger; four sons, Robert Livingston, Bedford, Roger and Rickie Livingston, both of English, and Randy Livingston, Paoli; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Friday at the McAdams Mortuary. Burial will follow at Paoli Community Cemetery.

Don Armstrong

Jan. 30, 1918 — Sept. 23, 2008

Don Armstrong, 90, of 9647 S. Harrodsburg Road, Springville, died at 7:26 a.m. on Tuesday at the StoneBridge Health Campus in Bedford.

Born Jan. 30, 1918, in Owensburg, he was the son of Felix and Eula (Rush) Armstrong. He married Rose Bridwell in 1941 and she survives.

Don was a sixth generation cattleman, farmer and educator. He graduated from Springville High School with the class of 1936 and received his teaching credential in 1939 from Indiana University. While attending college, he delivered milk to Johnson’s Creamery in the mornings, then changed clothes at the Graham Hotel to attend his classes. In the evening, he delivered ice to rural residences. After graduation, Don taught fifth and sixth grades at Springville for six months and then he taught fifth and sixth grades at the Dive School. Don was a contractor at NWSC Crane for four years. He returned to teaching fifth through eighth grades at Needmore for four years and then taught fifth grade at Smithville Elementary for five years.

After three years as the Head Teacher at Harrodsburg School, he retired from the Monroe County Community School Corporation to take a job with the Department of Agriculture/Farm Service Agency in Monroe County. Don worked for the FSA for 17 years. Throughout his career, he continued farming and raising cattle.

Don was in the delegation sent to Missouri to research cattle sales. Upon return, he helped organize the Springville Feeder Auction where he served as the first sales manager and was one of the first to sell cattle on video in 1992. Don wrote a weekly column for the Herald-Times newspaper, ‘Old Farmer Don’ for six years.

In addition, he was named Conservation Farmer of the Year in Monroe County in 1991 and his family was the Monroe County Farm Family of the Year in 2000. He was a member of the Soil Conservation Board for six years and served on the planning commission of the Southern Monroe Water Corporation which helped rural residents get city water. He was a past member of the Monroe Reservoir Waste Control Board and a current member of the Harrodsburg Lions Club and Monroe County Farm Bureau.

Don was a member of the Popcorn Christian Church where he served as a deacon for 10 years and an elder for 50 years.

Survivors include his wife, Rose, of Springville; two sons, Joe H. Armstrong and wife Trudy, Alan D. Armstrong and wife Sharon A.; grandchildren, Jeffrey H. Armstrong, Darren Armstrong and wife April, Amy Spires and husband Cam, Dr. Ashley B. Armstrong and husband Heath Prince, Allison Armstrong, Marisa Donovan and husband Brant, Doug Wilson and wife Lisa; great grandchildren, Caden Dale Spires, Emma, Katie and Hayden Wilson, Sawyer and Chaney Donovan; a son-in-law, Steve Hassfurder; step-grandchildren, Dr. Holly Cooper and husband Dr. Jason Cooper and Lorie Hassfurder; and step-great-grandchildren, Mikayla, Caitlyn, Camden and Colton Cooper.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Harry T. Armstrong; one daughter, Leslie Armstrong Wilson Hassfurder; and one son, Mark Edward Armstrong (in infancy).

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday from the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Phil McDonald and Thurston Scott officiating. Burial will follow in Lowder Cemetery.

Fredrick ‘Sarge’ Yates Jr.

Fredrick “Sarge” Yates Jr., 84, 701 W St., Bedford, died at 4:45 p.m. on Sunday at StoneBridge Health Campus in Bedford.

Born Aug. 13, 1924, in Louisville, Ky., he was the son of Fredrick and Elizabeth (Noll) Yates. He married Erika Yates on July 2, 1965, in Mannheim, Germany, she survives.

He retired with 23 years of service from the U.S. Army, and also worked 18 years at Brunner Engineering in Bedford. He was president of UAW 2158.

He was a member of VFW & American Legion Post No. 33, and was a Kentucky Colonel. He served in World War II, and the Korean Conflict for three tours, one tour of duty in Vietnam, and also served in the European Theater, & overseas tour.

Survivors include his wife, Erika Yates of Bedford; one daughter, Fritzi (Yates) Phillips of Bloomington; grandchildren, Michael Y. Cundiff Jr., Heather M. Cundiff, Haylee J. McLain, Jeffery S. Phillips, and Patrick S. Phillips; one sister, Helen (Yates) Woosley of Florida, and one brother, Harlan Yates of Kentucky.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter Diana J. Yates Cundiff Moore; and one sister, Violet (Yates) Angel.

Funeral services will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at Cresthaven Funeral Home in Bedford with the Rev. Leonard Sankey officiating. Burial will be in the Indiana Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery in Madison, Ind.

Helena Emerson

Dec. 5, 1919 — Sept. 22, 2008

Helena Elizabeth Emerson, 88, 1211 Parkside Drive, New Castle, formerly of Bedford, passed away on Monday after a lengthy illness with Alzheimer’s.

She was born in Olney, Ill., on Dec. 5, 1919. She married James W. “Bill” Emerson, a World War II veteran, on Jan. 28, 1940, until his passing on Nov. 29, 2000.

She spent 19 years at the Fabricast Plant of General Motors in Bedford. Afterwards, she was a retail dress shop manager in Michigan City.

Helena was a member of the First Baptist Church of New Castle and the American Legion Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by her father, Charles L. Hall, and mother Selma Helena (Muench) Hall. She was also preceded in death by her stepmother, Helen Hall, and two daughters-in-laws, Susan Jane and Rose Marie Emerson.

She is survived by two sons, William R. Emerson of Virginia Beach, Va., and his friend, Wilhelmina Gunter, and Ralph E. “Gene” Emerson of Pooler, Ga., formerly of New Castle; three grandchildren, William L. Emerson, Stefanie E. White and husband Lew of Virginia Beach, Va., and Brian E. Emerson and wife Alison of St. Augustine, Fla.; two great-grandchildren, Susan Isabelle and Brady Dean Emerson of St. Augustine; a sister, Marjorie Silvers of Bedford; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Friday at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home in Bedford, with burial immediately following at Cresthaven Memory Gardens.

Marco Marchetti

Sept. 22, 1915 — Sept. 19, 2008

Marco Marchetti, 92, of Bedford, died Friday.

Born Sept. 22, 1915 in Proctor, Vt., he was the son of Vasco and Amelia (Tenerani) Marchetti. He married Evalou June Henderson on Dec. 15, 1945, and she preceded him in death on April 30, 2004.

Marco was a graduate of the Bedford High School with the class of 1933. He served in World War II with the 93rd Naval Construction Battalion in the Solomon Islands, Green Island and the Philippines. He retired from NSWC-Crane in 1976 where he was a supervisory production manager in the public works department.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, American Legion Gillen Post No. 33 and the Elks Lodge.

Survivors include one son, Pat Marchetti and wife Toni of Pittsboro; one daughter, Jana Marchetti of Indianapolis; a granddaughter, Kristen Marchetti of Bloomington; a nephew and three nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two sisters, Libia Marchetti-Liva and Carmen Marchetti-Pichler; one brother, Milo Marchetti; and one grandson, Kurt Marchetti.

Susan Weber, 56, 2737 U Street, Bedford, died at 9 p.m. Friday at her residence.

She was born March 5, 1952, in Detroit, Mich., the daughter of Lincoln “Tony” and Jeanette (DeChene) Weber.

She was a great mother and grandmother. She was one of a kind, with a very free spirit. It was shown through her work with flowers and gardening, bringing smiles to anyone that met her, either with her great personality or a bouquet. She will be sadly missed.

Surviving relatives include three sons, Kyle Wasil of Bedford, Nigel Wasil and wife DeAndrea, of Bedford, and Benjamin Shelton of Bedford; two grandchildren, Aunaka Wasil and Simeon Wasil, both of Bedford; four brothers, Michael Weber of Huntington Woods, Mich., Paul Weber and wife Lydia of Bedford, David Weber and Carl Weber, both of Bedford; and one sister, Laura Doran and husband David of Kokomo.

Phyllis June (Jones) Chavis, 67, of 51 Airy Hills Addition, Springville, died at 9:33 p.m. on Sunday at the Monroe Hospital in Bloomington.

Born Dec. 20, 1940, she was the daughter of Charles H. and Fronia M. (Colyer) Jones. She was an employee at Experience Works in Bedford and was of the Pentecostal Faith.

He was a retired heavy equipment operator in the construction business and a veteran of World War II.

He retired in 1992 as a warehouse manager for Agri-Pro.

Roy W. Catozzi, 81, Mitchell, passed away at 9:20 p.m. Saturday at Mitchell Manor Living and Rehabilitation Center.

Born July 4, 1927, in Bedford, he was the son of Henry Enrico and Ilar Pearl (Biddy) Catozzi. He married Marilyn Doub on July 30, 1950, and she preceded him in death on June 5, 1988.

He was a custodian at Burris School and retired with 42 years of service. Roy was a Boy Scout leader, a charter member of the White River Bow Hunters, a member of the Mitchell Masonic Lodge No. 228 F&AM, and the Mitchell Presbyterian Church.

A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, he was a member of the Cecil C. Martin American Legion Post No. 250.

Surviving are this children, Anthony Catozzi of Bloomington, Thomas Catozzi of Mitchell, and Tammy Parks and husband Charles of Mitchell; and grandsons, Zachary and Michael Catozzi.

His parents; wife; son, Todd Catozzi; brothers, Henry, Carl, Jay and Sylvester Catozzi, and sisters, Gilda Godsey and Pauline Stotts, preceded him in death.

Marie Tillette, 74, of Mitchell, died Friday at Jewish Hospital in Louisville.

Born March 7, 1934, in Kentucky, she was the daughter of Dewey and Ollie (Jefferies) Turner.

She married Norman Tillette, and he preceded her in death on Sept. 6, 2005.

She was a homemaker and attended United Pentecostal Church in Paoli.

Survivors include one daughter, Myra Benson, and her husband, John, of Huron; two sons, Steve Tillette and Byron Tillette, both of Mitchell; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and one brother, Ralph Turner of Mitchell.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one daughter-in-law, Lana Tillette; five brothers Sam, Kenny, Jim, Frank and Charles Turner; and two sisters-in-law, Anna Mae and Fletia Turner.

Eugene Pruett, 89, Mitchell, passed away at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at his residence.

Born June 9, 1919, in Mitchell, he was the son of Artie and Vanice (Arnold) Pruett. He married Ruth Louise Slater on Sept. 12, 1942, and she survives.

Eugene touched many lives during his time here on earth. He was an U.S. Army veteran of World War II and served in New Guinea and the Philippines. He graduated from Mitchell High School in 1937, and during his tenure as a Boy Scout leader, he introduced the first Soap Box Derby. He worked at Carpenter Body Works for 30 years lettering buses.

His ministry included 12 years at Old Union Christian Church, was a charter member of Tulip Street Christian Church and 12 years at Carters Creek Christian Church, where he was a member. He was also a member of the Limestone Crusaders and the Cecil C. Martin American Legion Post No. 250 in Mitchell.

Surviving with his wife, Ruth of Mitchell, are one sister, Maxine Covert of Mitchell, a nephew, Steven Covert of Mitchell; nieces, Mary Kern of Bloomington, Debbie Watterson and Susan Mayden, both of Bedford, and Karen Urig of Charlotte, North Carolina; and great-nephews, Spencer Lujan and Jordan Kern.

His parents and sister, Evelyn Watterson, preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday in the Memorial Chapel of the Chastain Funeral Home with Brother Don Mahan officiating. Burial will be in the Mitchell Cemetery with military honors accorded by the Cecil C. Martin American Legion Post No. 250 and the Marvin R. Davis Veterans of Foreign Was Post No. 9107.

Our loving father, Gerald Sowder, 97, of 367 Sowders Road, Bedford, passed away at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday at the Dunn Memorial Hospital.

Born June 27, 1911 in Lawrence County, he was the son of Birtle and Leta (Owens) Sowder. He married Thelma Lorene Deckard on Sept. 7, 1929 and she preceded him in death.

He retired as an electric furnace operator for General Motors and was a member of the Donica Memorial Church of God. Gerald never met a stranger. He was an avid shade tree mechanic and electrician who wired homes for many. After his retirement, he enjoyed outdoor activities including fishing, bird hunting, pitching horseshoes, riding his motorcycle and hosting big fish fries. Gerald will be deeply missed by all his family and friends.

Survivors include two sons, Harold Sowders and Farrell Sowder both of Bedford; four daughters, Barbara Smoot and Maxine Allgood, both of Bedford, Irene Padgett of Switz City and Carolyn Perry of Bryantsville; 20 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; 38 great-great-grandchildren; two great-great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mildred Acuff of Ellettsville and Freadona Scott of Heltonville.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, two brothers, Sylvester Sowder and Birtle “Roy” Sowder; one sister, Margaret Harden; one grandson, Byron Dean Sowders.

She was a homemaker and a Pink Lady Volunteer at Dunn Memorial Hospital. She was a former Sunday school teacher and loved sewing and quilting.

Survivors included one daughter, Ruth Ann Harris and husband Keith E. of Bedford; one son, Guy W. Jackson and wife Janet of Evansville; one granddaughter, Amy Harris Kendall and husband Don; three grandsons, Daniel, Patrick and Peter Jackson; two brothers, Tom Kirkman of Avoca and Joe Kirkman of Bedford; and one sister, Joan Burton of Orleans.

She was born Nov. 11, 1937, to the late Leston and Ruth (Arthur) Hillenburg in Bedford. She was a loving wife, mother and homemaker. She was also part owner of H&R Lounge.

She is survived by four children, Leston (Jennie) Vaught of Winamac, Lynda (John) Napier of Portage, Larry (Cindy McNew) Vaught of Oregon, and Lorne (Christine Moore) Vaught of Oregon; a sister, Margie (William) Clampitt of New Castle; nine grandchildren, Kevin (Heidi Durkin) Napier, James H. (Krystal) Napier, Krista Napier, Mary Beth Pitts, Leston Vaught Jr., Christopher Vaught, Stacey (Jose) Real, John Russell, and Lisa (Bob Koon) Russell; 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Russell A. Hopewell

Russell Alan Hopewell, 59, of Haubstadt passed away on Thursday at his home.

Alan was born in Washington, on Nov. 12, 1948.

Alan grew up in Washington, Indiana. Alan played basketball for four years at Washington High School. He graduated with a basketball scholarship to Vincennes University. He went on to play basketball at Grand Canyon College in Phoenix, Arizona. He later received his Bachelors of Education and Masters degree in Education at Indiana State University.

Alan was employed by the South Gibson School Corporation as an English teacher and coach for 37 years. He was yearbook sponsor and adjunct instructor for the English CAP classes at USI. He loved all sports and coached all levels of basketball for 26 years. He started his teaching and coaching career at North Knox. He was head coach at Owensville High School for two years before the Gibson Southern consolidation. He was assistant varsity and freshman basketball coach at Gibson Southern and later coached at Fort Branch Community School.

The sport he enjoyed the most and the program he started at Gibson Southern was Cross Country, which he coached for 38 years. He was the recipient of the Presidential Award of the Indiana Association of Track and Cross Country at the 35th Annual Hall of Fame dinner, February of 2008 in Indianapolis. He had a ten year streak of having a state qualifier, and 13 runners have gone on to compete at college levels. He was the Head Boys’ Track coach for 35 years. As track coach, he had 18 Conference Championships, 13 Sectional Championship teams, two state champions and two state runner-ups, and 31 state qualifiers. Chris Walker, a high jumper for Gibson Southern advanced to the Junior Olympics in Los Angeles in 1984.

Alan received the Lilly Creative Fellowship Grant in 2006 to study in Greece. He was the 2003 Learning by Design recipient from SGSC for his award winning technology grant of a quarter of a million dollars that allowed students to record their family stories to save for posterity.

In the classroom Alan was fair, hard-nosed, and respected. He cared about each and every student. Former students never forgot Mr. Hopewell and his dedication to public education. Alan was an educator to the very end, witnessing to his friends and family about priorities in life. He knew and loved our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Throughout his life Alan gave generously and quietly his time and coaching skills to thousands of student athletes, many of whom are coaching today, a testament to his inspiration.

Alan was a loving Christian, husband, father, granddad, son, teacher, coach, mentor and friend who demonstrated all of those qualities of special people who make a difference in the lives of others.

His two grandchildren, Chase and Ashlyn, were his delight. Their latest accomplishments, art work, and photographs were displayed with pride.

Alan was a true friend, loyal and dedicated to many. His advice, experience, patience, humor, energy, and passion for life will be missed by all who were touched by this unassuming gentle man.

His untimely passing is a reminder to live each moment with those we love.

Alan was nominated for the Coach of the Year in 2002, 2005, 2006 and 2007 for the Indiana Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches. The Princeton Clarion named him the Coach of the Year in 1991-1992 and 1999-2000.

He was a member of the NEA, ISTA and the Indiana Association of Track and Cross Country. He was an Independent Real Estate Broker and sold real estate for Gwaltney Real Estate in Fort Branch from 1976-1993.

He served his country for six years in the Indiana National Guard from 1969-1976.

Alan will be remembered for his appreciation of life and always doing the extra things for his family, friends and students.

Alan is survived by his wife Carol (Schuetter) Hopewell; son Lance Hopewell and his wife Amy of Evansville; daughter, Heather Johnson and husband David Johnson of Indianapolis; grandchildren, Chase Johnson (Grand Dad’s big boy) and Ashlyn Johnson (Grand Dad’s special little girl); his mother, Donna Hopewell (Wininger) of Bedford; mother-in-law, Monica Schuetter; brother in-law, Randy Schuetter and his wife Mary; sister in-law, Lavonne Seidel and husband Mike and two nieces and two nephews from Jasper, Indiana; (Russell Sr.) wife, Patricia Hopewell and her daughter Mary Sue Bowling of Washington, and sons Mike Wonder of Chicago, Illinois, and David Wonder of San Jose, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his father Russell Hopewell and his grandparents.

Sylvia was of protestant faith, loved life and lived it to the fullest.

Mason Dale Watson, 22, Bedford, died Wednesday in Edinburgh.

He was born July 16, 1986, in Bedford, the son of Steve and Linda Jane (Brittain) Watson, who survive. He married Natalie Beverstock on June 11, 2005, in Gatlinburg, Tenn., and she also survives.

He was employed by Rumpke of Indiana. He was a member of the Liberty Christian Church in Norman. He was a graduate of Brownstown Central High School in 2005, where he was active in football, basketball and track. He also enjoyed dirt track racing.

Survivors include his wife, Natalie Watson, Bedford; a son, Mason “Bubba” Watson Jr., Bedford; his parents, Steve and Linda Watson; two brothers, his twin, Steve Watson of Norman, and Jason (Christina) Watson of Greenwood; a sister, Heather Cockerham and friend Jacob Gray; his grandfather, Pearl Brittain of Norman; his father-in-law, Danny (Chrissie) Beverstock of Indianapolis; and his mother-in-law, Sharon (Justin) Shirley of Bedford.

Robert E. Deremiah

Robert E. “Bob” Deremiah, 88, Parachute, Colo., formerly of French Lick, died Monday at Veterans Nursing Home in Rifle, Colo.

He was born in Mitchell on Feb. 1, 1920, to the late Ray Deremiah and Eva (Pittman) Deremiah. He married Gloria Kirla on June 25, 1949, and she preceded him in death on Sept. 9, 2005.

Bob graduated from French Lick High School in 1937, Hanover College with a BA in chemistry and mathematics in 1941, and Purdue University in 1949 with a BS in pharmacy. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Air Force, where he served in the Pacific Theatre with the 315th Bomb Wing and Medic Detachment.

He was the former owner and president of City Drug Store, Inc., in French Lick for 40 years. He had served on the board of trustees of the French Lick Public Schools. He was a life member and past fire chief of the French Lick Volunteer Fire Department, Past Post Commander of the French Lick American Legion Post No. 76, a member of the French Lick Masonic Lodge No. 568 F&AM, Evansville Scottish Rite, Hadi Temple Shrine, French Lick-West Baden Lions Club, charter member of the Springs Valley Exchange Club, the Indiana Pharmacy Association, where he had served on the IPA Practices Recodification Committee and IPA Public Affairs Committee. Bob was also a member of the National Association of Retail Druggists, (NARD), the John Purdue Club, the Purdue Alumni Association and Hanover College Alumni Association. He was a devoted husband and father, whose hobbies including golfing and woodworking.

He is survived by his four children, one daughter, Roberta “Bobbie” Hale and husband Rod of Jasper, and three sons, Richard Deremiah and wife Pamela of Centerville, Ohio, Ben Deremiah and wife Lisa of Carmel, and Kim Deremiah and wife Lisa of Zionsville; eight grandchildren, Sarah Wessell and husband Jack, Angie Deremiah, Chad Elkins and wife Charity, Kirstie Lynch and husband Jason, Rachel Deremiah, Sam Deremiah, Stephanie Deremiah, and Emily Deremiah; four great-grandchildren, Henry Elkins, Jadyn and Keira Lynch and Addison Wessell; and a half brother, Rod Deremiah of Newport Beach, Calif.

Daughter to the late Cecil and Priscilla Case, she was born August 10, 1925 in Mitchell. Preceded in death by her husband, Frank J., and stepson, Ron Sundling.

Gretchen had six siblings, Kenneth (Bonnie) Case, Winford, Helen, Miriam, Beatrice, Carol Ann, and Richard.

Gretchen was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, and will be missed by her children, Helen (Mike) Whatley, Steve Fischbach, Dave (Diana) Fischbach, and Joe Fischbach; grandchildren, Eric and Krista Sundling, Tracy (Carol), Jordan and Erin Whatley, John and Jodi Fischbach, Jeremy North, Jessica and Christina Fischbach and Stan Riley; and great-grandchildren, Lauren, Nicholas, and Kaitlyn Whatley.

W. Cully Thomas, 47, Mitchell, passed away Saturday afternoon in Indianapolis.

Born Sept. 15, 1960, in Pensacola, Fla., he was the son of Rolla A. (Buddy) and Nicoleta Ann (Cargas) Thomas.

He was formerly employed at Visteon and had worked at Mitchell Transport and Texas Nuclear Power Plant. He graduated from Mitchell High School in 1978 and was a member of the First Baptist Church.

Surviving are his parents, Buddy and Nicki Thomas of Mitchell, a sister, Keely Thomas of Columbus, Ohio; brothers, Kyle Thomas and wife Bridgid of Bedford and Cary Thomas of Indianapolis; nephews, John, Jay and Joseph Thomas; a foster nephew, Dominic; great aunt and uncle, Katherine and Fred Fricke of Bloomington; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Roscoe L. Gromer, DDS, 91, Orleans, formerly of Mitchell, passed away at 4:05 a.m. Monday at Bloomington Hospital of Orange County in Paoli.

Born Jan. 17, 1917, in Orange County, he was the son of John and Carmie (Collins) Gromer. He married Elnora Marie Johnson on April 25, 1942, and she preceded him in death on Oct. 13, 1976. He married Juanita (McClintock) Trinkle on Aug. 6, 1982.

He was a captain in the U.S. Army during World War II and a member of the Orleans Warren Brock American Legion Post No. 69.

Dr. Gromer practiced dentistry for more than 50 years and with 46 of those years in Mitchell. He was a lifetime member of the Indiana Dental Association, Indiana University Alumni Association, American Dental Association, and Delta Sigma Delta Dental Fraternity. He graduated from West Baden Springs High School in 1934, and was a graduate of Indiana University and Indiana University Medical School. He was a former Mitchell City Councilman, former president of the Mitchell Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow, and a member of the Lawrence County Rock Club. He belonged to the First Baptist Church in Orleans.

Surviving are his wife, Juanita Gromer of Orleans; stepdaughter, Tana King and husband Dr. James King of Mitchell; stepgranddaughters, Robin King Dralle and husband Michael of Oak Brook, Ill., and Tamara King Chambers and husband Dr. Sean Chambers of Bloomington; and step-great-grandchildren, R.J. and Sydney Dralle and Luke and Patrick Chambers.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in the Memorial Chapel of the Chastain Funeral Home in Mitchell with the Rev. Gene King officiating. Military honors will be accorded by Orleans Warren Brock American Legion Post No. 69.

Born Oct. 7, 1912, in Bedford, she was the daughter of B. Blish Todd and Leona J. (Harris) Todd. She married H. Wayne Criswell on Nov. 11, 1934, at Seymour, and he preceded her in death on Oct. 17, 1981.

She was a retired operator with AT&T (formerly Indiana Bell Telephone) in Bedford.

She was a graduate of Bedford High School with the class of 1930. She was a member of Hillcrest Christian Church, the Telephone Pioneers of America, and the John Wallace Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

She is survived by five nieces, Jane A. Richardson of Indianapolis, Sally Jones Rish of Fort Wayne, Susan Jones Staub of Columbus, Ohio, and Gweneth Todd Burton and Pamela Todd Ishee, both of Laurel, Miss.; and two nephews, Charles T. Richardson of Washington, D.C., and Steven W. Jones of Greenwood.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one brother, Clovis W. Todd; and two sisters, Antoinette Todd Richardson and Patricia Todd Jones.

Althoff of Freelandville, and Charlene D. Hatton of Shoals; two sons, Brian D. Thompson of Orleans, and William J. Stanley of Vincennes, currently stationed in Iraq; one sister, Jane Clark Wise of Franklin; 20 grandchildren, Michael, Sarah, Kristen, Nicholas, Kara, Evan, Joseph, Luke, Kasie, Cheyennena, Gregory, Andy, Mikey, Dalton, Samantha, Katie, Christopher, Sammie, Deanna, and Madison; and one great-grandchild, Kylah.

She was a seamstress and retired from M. Fine & Sons in Bedford. She was a life-time member of Faith Mission.

Wilfred O. Suddarth

Wilfred Ottis Suddarth, 96, Mitchell, went to be with his sweet Jesus at 12:32 p.m. on Monday.

Born June 8, 1912, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Ottis and Vira (Dalton) Suddarth. He married M. Evalou Slaughter on June 3, 1933, and she survives.

During his elementary years he worked with his dad hauling quarry rock from Lehigh on a horse-pulled flat bed wagon. Later he went to work at Holmes orchard while helping out on the family farm. As he grew older, he went to work for Julia Reid, delivering milk on his horse-pulled milk wagon. Starting at 2 a.m. he would deliver milk to the homes in Mitchell as well as to the men stationed at the C.C. Camp at Spring Mill. He then went to work for John C. Groub Company followed by 34 years at Carpenter Body Works (as a welder and supervisor for 20 years) and then Dan Pearcy Chevrolet for 15 years.

He was a charter member of the First Christian Church in Mitchell, serving as Elder, board member and greeter. He was a member of the Mitchell Masonic Lodge No. 228 F&AM and Order of Eastern Star (worthy patron) since 1943. He served on the Talbott Cemetery board over 50 years, the Mitchell Board of Works and Mitchell City Council for eight years. Wilfred was a lifetime member of the FOP No. 172 and in 1983 was given the Key to the City of Mitchell by Mayor Jerry Hancock.

Surviving along with his wife of 75 years, Evalou; are sisters: Mary Armstrong of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Margaret Chastain of Mitchell; one brother, John William Suddarth of Orleans; sisters-in-law: Joanne (Slaughter) Talbott and Ruth (Reynolds) Slaughter, both of Mitchell, and Lucille (Batchelor) Slaughter of Florida; 12 nephews; 12 nieces; and several great-nieces and nephews.

His parents, sisters: Beatrice and Thelma Suddarth, and Lucille Hollars, and six nephews, preceded him in death.

Dan Smallwood, 87, Norman, passed away at 4:45 a.m. Sunday at his residence.

He had retired from Golden Foundry and also was a farmer. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. He also had several beehives on his farm that kept him busy. He enjoyed singing and playing the guitar and over the years, had built three guitars.

Born Feb. 25, 1921, in Clay County, Ky., he was the son of Beve and Lenora (Smith) Smallwood. On May 23, 1942, in Nashville, he married Hazel Lowman and she survives.

Other survivors include one daughter, Donna (Roger) Patton of Bedford; two granddaughters: Cindy Augspurg and Julie (Rob) Benton, all of Medora; two great-grandsons: Austin and Blake Benton; one sister, Retha Kirts of Houston; several stepbrothers and stepsisters and half brothers and half sisters also survive.

He was preceded in death by both parents; and his twin brother, Lloyd Smallwood.

Paul W. Dorsett, 81, of Bedford, died at 5:03 a.m. Monday at the White River Lodge.

Born Nov. 9, 1926 in Lawrence County, he was the son of Marvin and Bessie Dimples (Fields) Dorsett. He married Catherine E. Beasley on April 29, 1945, and she died Oct. 19, 1999.

He was a truck driver for Commercial Motor Freight. Paul enjoyed restoring pedal cars and showing his Corvairs in auto shows.

Survivors include one son, Jack W. Dorsett and his wife, Danetta of Nashville; two daughters: Paula Dunlap and Debrah Kline and husband, Jerry, all of Bedford; one sister, Betty Howell of Bedford; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; three brothers: Bill, Marion and Leroy Dorsett; and two sisters: Nelda Gould and Helen Burchard.

William “Bo” Gallagher, 62, Mitchell, died at 4:15 a.m. Monday at Westview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Bedford.

He was a self-employed mechanic and was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran.

Survivors include three sons: Lee Gallagher and Steven Gallagher, both of Florida, and Shawn Gallagher, Bloomington; a stepdaughter, Robin Young, Mitchell; a stepson, Kenny Dumond, Bedford; a brother, Willie J. Gallagher of Louisiana and six grandchildren.

Thomas Scott Johnson, 43, of 407 Victorian Lane, Bedford, died Sunday at his residence.

Born Dec. 11, 1964, in Bedford, he was the son of Ivory and Juanita Sue (Henry) Johnson. He married Harriett A. Beedie on April 11, 1993 and she preceded him in death on March 28, 2006.

He was employed at Burger Chef and then Pleasers Restaurant until it closed in 2003.

He was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing and watching wildlife.

Survivors include his father, Ivory Johnson; a daughter, Heather F. Parker of Williams; two stepsons: Kyle Hackney and Nathan Hackney, both of Bedford; four grandchildren; four nephews; two nieces; two sisters: Teresa L. (Johnson) Stevens and Judith E. (Johnson) Guthrie, both of Bedford; and his caregiver and companion, Patricia Eisele of Bedford.

He was preceded in death by his mother; his wife, Harriett; and one brother, James E. Johnson.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. on Wednesday at the Leatherwood Cemetery.

Fred W. King, 66, Mitchell, passed away at 10:04 p.m. Saturday at Community Hospital South in Greenwood.

Born March 15, 1942, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Hobart and Edith (Baldwin) King. He married Linda Flinn on July 1, 1961.

He was a certified accountant and had been in the profession 47 years. He graduated from Huron High School in 1960 and attended business college. Fred had been employed at Ford Town in Shoals, Regal-Beloit, Ralph Rogers Group and McCullough Fabricating.

Fred was a member of the Huron Baptist Church, Ruritan Club, and had been a Boy Scout leader for Troop 344 in Huron and Troop 480 in Shoals. He had served as president of the Certified Public Accountants Association, and chairman of the Huron Memorial Day Parade. He had also been a member of the South Lawrence Utility Board and the Huron Alumni Association.

Survivors include his wife, Linda King of Mitchell; daughters, Kimberly Crowder and husband Richard of Shoals, Melissa Jones and husband Brian of Mitchell, and Jennifer King and friend Kenny Pferrer of Mitchell; grandchildren, Josh King, Mitchell, Jonah King, Mitchell, John Way, Shoals, Jacob Johnson, Mitchell, Jordan King, Mitchell, Ashley Jones, Mitchell, Jade Johnson, Mitchell, Stephanie Crowder, Shoals, and Pearl Mae Crowder, Shoals; nine stepgrandchilren; six great-grandchildren; brothers, Phillip King and wife Margaret, Huron, Douglas King and wife Doris, Springville, David King and wife Joyce, Bedford, Warren King and wife Vickie “Sammy,” Huron, Claude King and wife Kathy, Burns City, and Mark King and wife Debbie, Huron; and sisters, Becki Gregory and husband Richard of Virginia, Nancy Smith and husband Ralph of Florida, Netha Wyman and husband Fred, Muncie, and Jill Sutton and husband Mickie, Tennyson.

Jerry L. Bridwell, 77, of Bedford, died at 10:10 a.m. on Saturday at his residence.

Born March 2, 1931, he was the son of Paul C. and Eunice (Qualkinbush) Bridwell. He married Irene Wray on July 31, 1952, and she survives.

He retired from General Motors as the tool room supervisor. He was of the Baptist faith, a veteran of the U.S. Army, a member of the American Legion Gillen Post No. 33, and a member of the Fraternal Order of the Elks in Bedford.

Survivors include his wife Irene of Bedford; one sister, Paula Chastain and husband Stan of Bedford; one brother, Derek Bridwell of Bedford; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Sue Ferrell; and one brother, Michael Bridwell.

John T. Fleener, 69, 676 VFW Road, Mitchell, passed away at 12:13 p.m. Thursday at his residence.

Born in 1939 in Evansville, he was the son of Elder William A. and Inez Elsa (Hopper) Fleener. He married Sue Ann Chastain on Dec. 23, 1961.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He was a technical engineer and was employed at RCA from 1964-69 and the Burroughs Company from 1969-84. He retired June 18, 2004, from Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial after having also served at Wayne Hoosier National Forest in Bedford and Marietta, Ohio. John was a member of the Lost River Primitive Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Sue A. Fleener of Mitchell; daughters, Cynthia Louise Fleener of Mitchell, Penny Sue Roach of Carol Stream, Ill., and Rebecca Jane Murphy South and husband Henry T. of Rockford, Ill.; grandchildren, Timothy W. Moody, Terri Nicole Hamilton and husband Thomas, Katrina Jo Roach, Callie Amanda Roach, Maggie Sue Fleener, Adam J. Roach, and Sheldon Gearlds.

His parents and half brothers, Aarol, Frank and Elmer T. Fleener, preceded him in death.

Hugh Griffith Jr., 84, of Hot Springs, Ark., joined the Church Triumphant on September 3, 2008. He was born in Sallisaw, Oklahoma on Dec. 11, 1923 to the late Hugh and Josie (Glenn) Griffith. He was a member of Piney Grove United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Rockport Masonic Lodge for 50 years. He was an Army veteran of World War II Pacific Theatre and received a letter of commendation from President Harry Truman. Mr. Griffith retired from Central Foundry Division of General Motors in Bedford, Indiana and Jones Mill, Arkansas. He was a member of United Auto Workers Local No. 440 for over 30 years.

Survivors include his loving wife of 62 years, Geneva (McClain) of Hot Springs; son, Larry Griffith and his wife, Linda, of Hot Springs; son Dennis Griffith and his wife, Suellen, of Mitchell, Indiana; brother, Bob Griffith and his wife, Norma, of Hot Springs; sister Ruth Thomas and her husband, Will, of Moore, Oklahoma; sister, Louise Rutlege, of Henderson, Nevada; sister, Gladys Smith and her husband, Dave, of Henderson, Nevada; granddaughter, Angie Griffith Hudson and her husband, Matt, of Ft. Born Aug. 10, 1949 in Lawrence County, he was the son of Virgil Kenneth and Vera (Kinder) Dorsett.

He was a medical technician at Bloomington Hospital for 33 years. He graduated from Mitchell High School in 1967 and Oakland City College in 1971. Denny was a member of the St. Charles Catholic Church in Bloomington.

David Lynn Beard

David Lynn Beard, 90, of Bloomington, died at Garden Villa on Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008. He was born on April 30, 1918, in Lafayette, Indiana. He was the son of Harry C. and Della Mae (McHenry) Beard.

David was a graduate of Shawswick High School in Bedford, Indiana. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving in the 45th division company B during WW II where he received a Bronze Star and Purple Heart. After being discharged in 1945, he entered the IBEW Local No. 1131 apprenticeship program for electricians. In 1950, he and James Steele formed Steele-Beard Electric, which he owned until 1987. He was a member of the American Legion and a 62-year member of IBEW Local No. 725. He attended the Ellettsville Church of Christ.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Marjorie M. (Combs) Beard; one son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Nora Beard, one daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Gary Crum, all of Bloomington; five grandchildren: Allison Beard, of Indianapolis, Patrick Beard, of Bloomington, Gregory Abram, of New Mexico, Bradley Abram, of Bloomington and Wesley and his wife Rene Abram, of Owensburg, Indiana; two great-grandchildren: Taylor Abram and Brooke (Jeff) Mackey and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers: C. Reed Beard, Merle M. Beard and Lyle Beard, and one sister, Georgina Beard.

The funeral service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 6 at 11 a.m. at Day Funeral Home Chapel with calling one hour prior to service with Johnie Edwards officiating. Joe Hunter

Joe Hunter, 81, Princeton, passed away Sunday. He was the loving husband of Terry Hunter for over 55 years, who preceded him to heaven.

He was born in Bedford, and played in the 1943 High School Basketball State Finals as a Bedford Stonecutter. He was also known as Little Joe, the Wrangler.

He was the owner of Hudson Furniture for over 30 years. Joe was one of D.A. Keimer’s elves and for many years he was the coordinator of the D.A. Keimer Christmas Fund until passing it on to others.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He is survived by his eight children: Cathy, Joe E., Mark, Nancy, Kevin, Susan, Bill and Mateu; his 16 grandchildren: Shane, Lexis, Sheena, Hunter, Dusty, Kristin, Kate, Brian, Ivan, Maria, Ty, Britni, Jordan, Tanner, Surya and Ibai; and his two great-grandsons: Caden and Tyson.

He was preceded in death by his son, David Brent and his granddaughter, Anna Therese.

Visitation will be at Colvin Funeral Home in Princeton on Thursday from 6 until 9 p.m. A Rosary service will be held at 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

A memorial Mass will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Princeton. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery will full military rites at the cemetery by the V.F.W. No. 1147. A celebratory luncheon will follow the funeral services at St. Joseph Parish.

Jo (Mascio) Sherwood, 81, of Duluth, Ga., passed away Friday after a six-month heart-related illness. She was preceded in death by parents, Benny and Stephana Mascio; brother, Raymond; and sister, Amelia, all of Bedford.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Bill; sisters: Evelyn (August - deceased) Baker, Betty (Don) True, both of Bedford, and twin sister Ann (Jerry - deceased) Manzenberger of Bradenton Fla.; children: Ray (Jan) Sherwood of Snellville, Ga., Fred Sherwood of Danville, Calif., and Susan (Jeff) Thayer of Minneapolis, Minn.; grandchildren: Michael (Jennifer), Melissa, Tim, and Lindsay; and great-grandchildren: Katherine and Sarah.

Jo was a retired employee of Rich’s department store having worked there for 25 years.

Jo was a member of All Saints Catholic Church for 25 years. She was a very active volunteer with Joan Glancey Hospital and Gwinnett Medical Center with a total of 13 years and 4,825 hours of service.

The family would like to thank all of the staff and doctors at Emory University’s Cardiac Unit and The Rollins Center, especially Dr. Allen Dollar who offered great comfort and excellent care to Mom. We would also like to thank Mom’s hundreds of friends who sent cards, flowers, phoned and visited during her illness.

Funeral services were Tuesday at All Saints Catholic Church in Dunwoody with interment at Arlington Cemetery, Sandy Springs, Ga.

Geraldine Shaver Conlon, 89, Beech Grove, formerly of Jeffersonville and Bedford, passed away Monday at the Altenheim Community in Beech Grove.

She was a member of Southport Christian Church.

She is survived by a daughter, Becky Conlon, Youngstown, Fla.; two sons: Robert Conlon and wife Annette, Greenwood, and John Conlon and wife Debbie, Westfield; four grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

She was born Dec. 27, 1928, in Wapakoneta, Ohio, to Jacob and Mary (Haggard) Lechner. She married Charles B. Eaton and he preceded her in death in 1982.

She was a homemaker and member of the Pleasant Kentucky Ridge Baptist Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Lois Davidson and husband John; and two granddaughters: Janelle Davidson and Audrey Davidson, all of Owensburg.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles B. Eaton in 1982; one son, Charles “Chuck” Eaton in 1973; three brothers: William Jacob Lechner, Thomas Lechner, and Carl Lechner; two sisters: Barbara Davis and Martha Jennings; and her parents.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Jenkins & Sons Funeral Home in Bloomfield. Burial will be at Kentucky Ridge Cemetery in rural Bloomfield.

Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, and for one hour prior to the services on Friday at the funeral home.

Kenneth W. Dorsett

Dec, 19, 1933 — Sept. 1, 2008

Kenneth W. Dorsett, 74, of Indianapolis, passed away on Monday.

He was born in Bedford and worked at Ford Motor Company for 41 years as Floor inspector retiring in 1998. Ken was a member of St. Simon the Apostle Catholic Church; he was a very active man, played football, baseball and basketball in high school. He also attended Indiana University and received his paralegal degree. Ken coached CYO Football and had been a Cub Scout and Boy Scout Leader.

He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Frances; children: Virginia (Don) Crawford, Danny, Timothy (Ellen), and Clay Dorsett; grandchildren: Mary Elise Dorsett, Katie (David) Osting, Joe (Tarena) Sullivan; great-grandchildren: Aaron Sullivan, and a baby boy on the way to arrive in October; step grandchildren: Tonia Maynard, and Matthew Crawford; and sisters: Betty Hoover, and Phyllis Westerfield.

Ken was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Dora Dorsett; and sisters: Virginia Noel, and Mary Frances Acton.

Friends may call at Legacy Funeral Center at Memorial Park on Thursday from 4-8 p.m.

Funeral mass will be at St. Simon the Apostle Catholic Church on Friday at 11 a.m.

Nancy L. Williams

June 29, 1933 — Aug. 31, 2008

Nancy L. Williams, 75, of Grand Ledge, Mich. was called home Sunday.

Born in Mitchell on June 29, 1933, to Elwood and Elizabeth (Smith) Todd, Nancy was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and a precious and trusted friend to all who knew her.

Nancy worked at Fisher Body in Lansing, Michigan.

She was preceded in death by her husband Rual, who passed away March 12, 2007, and brother, John.

She is survived by her daughter, Carol Fitts (Michael) of Mulliken, Mich.; her son, Mark L. Williams (Nora) of Ionia, Mich.; six grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; her Aunt Lela Reynolds of Indiana. and her cousin Larry Wilson (Sandy) of Indianapolis.

Nancy was steadfast in her faith in God and his son Jesus Christ and lived her life as such. She was a member of Capital City Baptist Church in Lansing for over 36 years.

Nancy loved her family and had many fond memories surrounding family gatherings during the holidays as well as with special friends the Strahan family. She was a people person, whether it was spending time with her friends or just talking to them on the phone, she enjoyed the blessing of those special relationships. Nancy also loved a good deal and enjoyed shopping as much as the great buy. She was a big Detroit Pistons Basketball fan and rooted for her favorite team whenever they played.

Nancy will come to rest, on Thursday. Services will be at 1 p.m.at the Holihan-Atkin Funeral Home in Grand Ledge (517-627-2531) with The Reverend Daryl L. Franzel officiating. Internment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery, Grand Ledge.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 5-8 p.m.
