Bruce A. Hewetson

Bruce A. Hewetson, 57, of Bedford, died at 10:01 p.m. on Tuesday, October 28, 2008, at the Dunn Memorial Hospital.

Born Feb. 5, 1951, in Bedford, he was the son of Bruce R. and June (King) Hewetson. He married Julie Johnson on June 30, 1984, and she survives.

Bruce graduated from Bedford High School with the class of 1969. He graduated from Indiana University in 1973 with a bachelor’s degree in history. He attended the I.U. School of Law, where he was editor of the Indiana Law Review. He was admitted to the Indiana Bar in 1976. He began his practice with Clarence Donovan and Gordon Emery and was Chief Deputy Prosecutor for Lawrence County. He has practiced as an attorney for 33 years with Donovan, Emery, Hewetson & Pittman Law Office. He served on the District No. 10 Pro Bono Committee and as the North Lawrence School Attorney.

Bruce was a member and elder of the Community Baptist Fellowship Church in Bedford, the Lawrence County Bar Association, and Bedford Kiwanis Club. He served on the board of the Lawrence County Cancer Society, the board of the American Red Cross and was an honorary member of the board of the Thornton Memorial Boys Club. He was president of the Lawrence County Aquatics Swim Club and a past president of the Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce and the Lawrence County Community Foundation. He was a former assistant scout master for Boy Scout Troop No. 332 and was an avid tennis player and fisherman.

Bruce Hewetson, a man dedicated to his community, was even more devoted to his family. Bruce was the husband to Julie Johnson Hewetson, and they were planning to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary in June of this coming year. For the past 25 years, together they truly enjoyed traveling, attending I.U. sporting events, and supporting their children. He found a lot of joy in watching his children, Anah and Barron, grow and develop into the wonderful contributing individuals that they have become. Barron has recently graduated from Wabash, and he is continuing his education in Indianapolis. Anah has just started her freshman year at the University of Virginia where she has joined the dance team, and Bruce enjoyed many travels to Virginia spent encouraging Anah in dance and her freshman year. Bruce was a strong man in Christ, and everyday he carried and lived by the verse, 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” As a family, they shared many joyful times, none of which will be forgotten.

Survivors include his wife, Julie, of Bedford; his mother, June Hewetson, of Bedford; one son, Barron Bruce Hewetson of Indianapolis; one daughter, Anah Kathleen Hewetson, a student of the University of Virginia; one brother, Don J. Hewetson and wife Teri of Rock Hill, S.C.; one sister, Debra Dermody and husband Frank of Oakmont, Pa.; two brothers-in-law, Brian Johnson and wife Linda of San Antonio, Texas, Reed Johnson and wife Shana of Avon; his mother-in-law, Ruth L. Johnson of Bedford; seven nephews, Clint Hewetson, Frank Dermody, Dirk Hewetson, Garrett Johnson, Cole Johnson, Gavin Johnson, Hunter Johnson; and two nieces, Jessica Hewetson and Cara Dermody.

He was preceded in death by his father, Bruce R. Hewetson, and his father-in-law, Bill Johnson.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the Community Baptist Fellowship Church with Pastor Eric Kennedy and Jon Lineback officiating. Burial will follow in Cresthaven Memory Gardens.

Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until the service on Saturday at the church.

Benjamin Joseph “Benny Joe” Elliott, 53, Bloomington, died Sept. 27 at Bloomington Hospital.

He was disabled.

Survivors include three sisters, Tangie Jarrard, Bonita Springs, Fla., Sally Elliott, Red Wing, Minn., and Margie Riley, Kingwood, Texas; three nephews; and one niece.

Bertha M. Varvel

July 21, 1932 — Oct. 2008

Bertha Marie Varvel, 76, Orleans, passed away Tuesday at Dunn Memorial Hospital.

She was born July 21, 1932, in Orleans, the daughter of Claude and Blanche (Chastain) Ingram. She was married for 57 years to C. Dale Varvel. They were married Aug. 4, 1951.

She retired, due to health problems, from the office of V.V. Pillai, M.D., in Bedford. She was a 1950 graduate of Orleans High School and was a member of the Orleans Church of Christ. She was also a member of the Associate Chapter of Phi Beta Psi Sorority in Orleans.

Surviving with her husband, Dale of Orleans, are two daughters; Gwen Baker of Orleans, and Regina Grimes and husband Benny of Mitchell; a sister, Sylvia Magner of North Vernon; a brother, Donald Ingram and wife Jean of Salem; six grandchildren: Darren Baker, Devin Baker and Danelle Bush, all of Orleans, Joshua Grimes and Raymond Grimes, both of Mitchell, and Misti Grimes Bishop of Auburn, Wash.; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Bertha’s parents; a brother-in-law, Glenn Magner; and two infant daughters: Marlene and Michelle; and a granddaughter, Sara, preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Friday at the Ochs-Tetrick Funeral Home in Orleans with Brother Michel Mahler officiating. Burial will follow in the Freedom Cemetery, Ind. 60 East, Mitchell.

Rev. Kenneth A. McVey

Rev. Kenneth A. McVey, 85, Martinsville, formerly of Shoals, died at 6:40 a.m. Tuesday at his son’s residence in Martinsville.

Born March 7, 1923, in Bucklin, Kan., he was the son of Jesse Thomas and Lota Vida (Gratner) McVey. He married Lillian Mae Sadler on May 11, 1946, in Grand Junction, Colo., and she survives.

He was a minister and Bible scholar. He was a missionary to the country of Brazil for over 30 years. He began his ministry by starting Hope Mission in the gold mining town of Victor, Colo., in 1948. He worked for Ajax Mines. His co-workers referred to him as the “Sky Pilot,” guiding them to Heaven.

He was educated in Colorado Springs, Colo., at the Immanuel Missionary Bible College. He was a member and minister of Immanuel Missionary Church and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Suriving with his wife, Lillian, of Martinsville, are, two sons: Andrew McVey and wife Judy of Odon, and Gordon L. McVey and wife Nubia of Martinsville; one daughter, Mary Beth Ross of Bedford; one brother, John McVey of Harrah, Okla.; one daughter-in-law, Sharon McVey of Shoals; grandchildren: Ben McVey of Westfield, Laverna Anderson of Chugwater, Wyo., Gilbrith Dorman of Sulamanca, N.Y., Cyndi Ann Ross of Bedford, Ricki Lynn Ross of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Sarah Lee Ann and Samuel Lee McVey, both of Martinsville; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Edith Ann Dorman; six brothers; and two sisters.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Shoals Holiness Church Burial will follow in Spring Hill Cemetery in Shoals. Graveside rites will be accorded by the Shoals American Legion Post No. 61.

Ferrell O. Anderson

Ferrell O. “Andy” Anderson, 88, of Greenwood, passed away Tuesday.

The son of Omer N. and Carrie J. (Lagle) Anderson, Ferrell was born June 16, 1920 in Mitchell.

A veteran of the U.S. Navy, Ferrell was a member of the First Baptist Church of Greenwood. He was an industrial engineer with Inland Container Corporation for 18 years. Later, Ferrell was owner of Andy Anderson & Associates in Mitchell.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Jean (Erwin) Anderson of Greenwood; daughters: Karen J. (Doug) Lawrie of Indianapolis, Diana J. (Mike) Sturm of Spencerville, and Cheri J. Anderson of Avon; brother, Robert H. Anderson of Wichita, Kan.; nine grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

Besides his parents, Ferrell was preceded in death by a son, Ferrell Scott Anderson and brothers: Howard J. and Charles E. Anderson.

Dr. Thomas Bridges will conduct funeral services at noon, Friday at Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service & Crematory, Greenwood Chapel, 481 West Main Street. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.

Eldena Rogers Lagle, 69, West Mourland, Tenn., died Oct. 28 at her residence

She was born Nov. 13, 1938, in Lawrence County, the daughter of Clovis and Thelma (Hillenburg) Rogers. She married Richard D. Lagle and he survives.

She was a homemaker.

She grew up in East Oolitic, she also loved crafting and crocheting

Survivors include her husband, Richard D. Lagle of West Mourland, Tenn.; four daughters: Rita Rodriguez of Idaho, Sherry Koontz and husband Bill of Bloomington, Sheila Brown of Tennessee, and Rhonda Byrd and husband Standley of Indianapolis; two sons: Gregory Lagle and Richard “Rick” D. Lagle, both of Tennessee; 13 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren; and four sisters: Linda Tumey, Lana Chenault, and Connie Mathis, all of Bedford, and Carolyn Beal of Bloomington.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Kenneth Rogers and James Rogers.

Kathryn Y. Mount

A memorial service for Kathryn Y. Mount, 77, Killeen, Texas, will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at LifeWay Fellowship in Killeen.

Kathryn Y. Mount died Oct. 24, at Metroplex Hospital. She was born April 16, 1931, in Bedford, the daughter of Harold and Marguerite (Doyle) Yarling.

She married Richard F. Mount on Aug. 17, 1952. They had two children.

She was a homemaker and a business owner.

She came to know Jesus as her Lord and Savior at the age of 30 in Saudi Arabia through a dear friend, Lenora Cook. She was a member of the Free Methodist Church in Bedford. When she moved to Killeen, she became active with LifeWay Fellowship.

She is preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include her husband, Richard F. Mount of Killeen; a brother, Stephen Yarling of Henderson, Nev.; her son and daughter-in-law, Rick and Becky Mount of Clover, South Carolina; her daughter, Julie Mount, Killeen; three grandchildren; and three-great-grandchildren.

Eugene H. Harrough, 85, Bloomington, died early Tuesday morning at his residence.

He spent his professional career with Whaley Construction and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Vernon Green

Vernon J. Green, 82, Mitchell, passed away at 7:20 a.m. Monday at Garden Villa in Bedford.

Born July 27, 1926, in Mitchell, he was the son of Louis and Theresa (Davis) Green. He married Dymple Pruitt on July 16, 1945.

He retired from U.S. Gypsum and graduated from Mitchell High School in 1945. Vernon was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, he served in the Naval Armed Guard as a Gunners Mate Third Class aboard the USS Dartmouth in the South Pacific and was the recipient of a Bronze Star. He was a member of Cecil C. Martin American Legion Post No. 250.

He was co-owner of Dymple’s Delight Persimmon Products from 1968-1998.

Surviving are his wife, Dymple R. Green of Mitchell; a son, Christopher Green and wife Amelia of Mooresville; a granddaughter, Rachael Green; a sister, Pauline Taylor of Mitchell; a sister-in-law, Audrey Wynn of Mitchell; nephew, Steve Wynn of Orleans; and several other nephews and nieces.

His parents; brothers: Everett and Arthur Green; and sisters: Mildred Cummings and Margaret Mass, preceded him in death.

A funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mitchell with Father Rick Eldred and Father Paul Landwerlen officiating. Burial will be in Cresthaven Memory Gardens with military honors accorded by Cecil C. Martin American Legion Post No. 250 and Marvin R. Davis Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9107.

Marjorie F. (Covey) McFarlan, 88, Bedford, died at 5:05 a.m. today at StoneBridge Health Campus in Bedford.

She was born June 12, 1920, in Guthrie, the daughter of James and Mary (Young) Covey. She married Bert McFarlan on Feb. 5, 1950, and he preceded her in death on July 13, 1992.

She was an inspector at RCA in Bloomington for 25 years, and at Westinghouse for 12 years. She retired in 1982.

She was a member of Valley Mission Church of the Nazarene.

Survivors include her niece and caregiver, Nancy Rogers of Richmond; and several nieces and nephews in the Lawrence County area.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; and four half-sisters.

Benny M. Maddox

Benny M. Maddox, 79, of 1518 Guthrie Road, Bedford, died at 4:35 p.m. on Monday, at the Bedford Regional Medical Center.

Born Sept. 19, 1929, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Cletus and Lessie (Hardin) Maddox. He married Glenda M. Lemon on Nov. 13, 1954, and she survives.

Benny loved farming and being in the outdoors. He enjoyed music, fishing and hunting. He once caught a wild turkey with his bare hands. He was a life-long attendee at the Valley Mission Church. He enjoyed life to the fullest, he never met a stranger and always had a good word about everyone.

Benny was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Korean War as a staff sergeant with the 999th Artillery Division.

Survivors include his wife, Glenda; one son, Ted Maddox and wife Diane; one daughter, Anita Ritter and husband Gary, all of Guthrie; grandchildren: Matthew Ritter and wife Andrea, Heather Moore and husband Matthew, and Danielle Maddox and Jake Maddox; one great-grandchild, Madelyn Grace Ritter; two step-great-grandchildren: Tayler and Isiah Moore; one brother, Dale Maddox and wife Mildred of Guthrie; two sisters-in-law: Esta and Loretta Maddox, both of Guthrie; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and five brothers: Richard, Harry, Ray, Roy and Gene.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Thursday at the Valley Mission Church with Pastor Duane Brown and John Hill officiating. Burial will follow in the Clover Hill Cemetery in Harrodsburg. Military rites will be accorded at the graveside by members of Gillen Post No. 33 American Legion.

Stella M. Carr, Westlake, Ohio, formerly of Defiance, Ohio, and Bedford, died Sunday at the Lutheran Home in Westlake.

She was born Sept. 13, 1915, in Bedford, the daughter of Walter and Myrtle (Justus) Reynolds. She married Garold H. Carr Sr. in 1938, and he preceded her in death in 1988.

She worked as a nurses’ aide in nursing homes in Indiana and also worked at the Big Boy Restaurant in Defiance, Ohio.

Survivors include her daughter, Sharon Oberhaus, North Ridgeville, Ohio; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Garold; her parents; two sons, John L. and Garold H. Carr Jr.; one daughter, Beth Ann Carr; five brothers; and four sisters.

Graveside funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Cresthaven Memory Gardens in Bedford where burial will follow.

He was involved in route grocery sales for 28 years with Lewis Grocery Co. of Evansville and wasa U.S. Army veteran.

Survivors include daughters, Charlotte Geary, Washington, Carol Todd, Bedford, and Linda Slaven, Washington; sons, Michael Slaven, Washington, and Mark Slaven, Orland Park, Ill.; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; sisters, Grace Adams, and Dixie Chattin, both of Washington, Mary Jennison, Martinsville, and Gertrude Cannon, West Palm Beach, Fla.; and a dear friend, Dorothy Allen, East Point, Ga.

Dennis Joe Pridemore, 61

Dennis Joe Pridemore, 61, of Mitchell, Indiana, died Friday, October 24, 2008, at Dunn Memorial Hospital in Bedford, Indiana.

He was born August 9, 1947, in Mitchell, Indiana, to his parents, Leon and Mildred Ruth Bush Pridemore.

He graduated from Mitchell High School with the class of 1965. He was a Vietnam Army Veteran. He was retired from Bruner Engineering in Bedford. Dennis was a member of the Woodville Baptist Church and attended the Mitchell Church of Christ, where he helped with the food pantry. He was a member of the Cecil C. Martin American Legion Post 250 and the Marvin Davis Veterans of Foreign Wars. He also volunteered at the Regeneration Store in Mitchell.

Dennis is survived by his mother, Mildred Ruth Reynolds of Mitchell; a daughter, Samantha Nier of Mitchell; and two brothers, Adrian Pridemore of Mitchell and Brian Pridemore of Bedford, Indiana. There are several aunts, uncles, cousins and one niece who survive, along with dear friends with whom he kept in close contact.

He was preceded in death by his father, Leon Pridemore; his daughter, Sherry Lynn Pridemore; and his step-father, George Thomas Reynolds.

The funeral for Dennis Pridemore will be at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 28, at the Ochs-Tetrick Funeral Home in Orleans, Indiana. Bro. David Conley will officiate. Burial will follow in the Mitchell Cemetery, Mitchell, Indiana, with military rites by the Cecil C. Martin American Legion of Mitchell and the Marvin Davis VFW post #9107 of Mitchell.

Linda Lou Gilstrap, 54, of Salem, died Friday at her residence.

She was a homemaker.

Survivors include one daughter, April Stroud of Mitchell; one son, Michael Gilstrap of Salem; and one sister, Pattty Richardson.

Cremation was chosen, with services at a later date. Interment is at Crown Hill Cemetery in Salem.

Noah Samuel Ryan Gore, infant son of Samuel Nathan and Angela Lynn (Isaacs) Gore, 1204 Tripleton Pike, Bedford, died at 3:37 p.m. Tuesday at Dunn Memorial Hospital.

Max L. Scott, 53, North Webster, died at 4:35 p.m. Wednesday at Lutheran Hospital of Indiana at Fort Wayne.

He served in the camp ministry for 20 years, including 14 years at Indian Creek Camp near Bedford.

Survivors include his wife, Rebecca S. (Quirk) Scott, North Webster; one daughter, Jessica Taylor, North Webster; two sons, Jeremy Scott, North Webster, and Jason Scott, Jasper; one grandson; and one sister, Nancy Elliott, Lucerne.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the North Webster Church of God, 301 N. Main St., North Webster, with John McKay and Jeff Boyer officiating. Burial will follow in North Webster Cemetery.

Helen H. Smith

Helen Heitger Smith, 96, of Bedford, died Wednesday at StoneBridge Health Campus in Bedford.

Born Feb. 20, 1912, in Phenix, Mo., she was the only child of Clem and Nell (Killingsworth) Heitger.

A life-long parishioner of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Helen attended St. Vincent school, accelerating through with honors. She attended Bedford High School where she was competitive in sports. She excelled in golf and tennis, winning the City Tennis Championship in 1928, her senior year. At Bedford High School, she met Lyle Smith. Before marrying Lyle, Helen worked for the federal government in Indianapolis as an administrative assistant. In Indianapolis, she enjoyed the life of a young single. She excelled in shorthand and office administration and was asked repeatedly to take a government job in Washington, D.C.

She declined, preferring to return to Bedford to marry Lyle on July 8, 1939, raise a family and befriend the community. Helen worked as an administrative assistant in Bedford for many years finalizing her working career at the Bedford Medical Center as assistant to the president. Helen spent a number of years on the board of St. Vincent school, helping direct the school’s course and serving as president.

She was a member of the Altar Society, Women’s Dept. Club, A.A.R.P., Bedford Medical Center Auxiliary and the I.U. Alumni Assoc. The Indiana University basketball team has lost one of its most ardent fans. She kept her longtime season tickets well into her eighties. She was an avid gardener and bird watcher. An early photo shows Helen holding a wounded and healing bird in her hands. She enjoyed her morning coffee with many of God’s creatures on her patio. Mrs. Smith loved to fish, having been brought up with a love for the outdoors. The White River, Rice Lake in Wisconsin and Galveston Bay were her home waters. Recently, in a farm pond owned by friends, she hooked, landed and released a giant white catfish. Helen was 94 years old at the time. She returned again and again in search of the great white catfish.

Survivors include three sons: David Smith of Bedford, Joseph Smith of Zionsville and Steve Smith of Houston, Texas; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and one son, Donald Patrick Smith.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, at the St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church with Father Rick Eldred officiating. Burial will follow in the Green Hill Cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday at Day & Carter Mortuary. A rosary service will be at 7 p.m. on Friday.

William H. Turner, 78, died Monday at his residence.

He was born Jan. 3, 1930, in Lawrence County, the son of Paul and Mary Elizabeth (Nethery) Turner. He married Ruth Helga Voight, Feb. 18, 1954, in Frankfort, Germany, and she survives.

He attended Needmore High School, served in the U.S. Army for 20 years, and retired from Moon Freight Lines. He was a member of Teamsters Union Local No. 135 and Dive Christian Church.

Surviving with his wife of 54 years, Ruth; are children: Michael Turner and wife Lisa of Bloomington, William Turner Jr. and wife Carol of Washington, and Jean Turner and Janet Fabris, both of Bloomington; grandchildren: Tara Turner, Milwaukee, Wis., Ashley Turner, Bloomington, Carrie Bailey and husband Todd of Indianapolis, Brian Fabris of San Mateo, Calif., Rachel Turner of Franklin, Mark Fabris and wife Shannon of Bloomington, and Steffanie Turner of Bloomington; a great-granddaughter, MacKenzie Fabris of Bloomington; one sister, Judy Turner of Bedford; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, James and Archie; and his mother-in-law, Kate Rounds.

Cremation was chosen. A memorial service will be at a later date.

Carl David “Dave” Curtis, 63, of 241 South Hill Drive, Bedford, died at 4:15 a.m. today at Garden Villa in Bedford.

Born June 3, 1945, in Bedford, he was the son of Joe and Barbara (Greene) Curtis. He married Patricia Erwin on Aug. 20, 1966, and she survives.

Dave was a supervisor for General Motors in Bedford and was a member of the Calvary Lutheran Church in Bedford.

Surviving with his parents, are his wife, Patricia of Bedford; one son, Tod Curtis and wife Cindy of Bedford; one daughter, Elizabeth Grant and husband Justin of Bloomington; four grandchildren: Austin and Ashleigh Curtis, and Morgan and Jordan Grant; four sisters: Rita Ward of Paragon, Rhea Sanderson of Bedford, Nancy Schulenburg of Bedford and Mary Franklin of Bloomington.

Edith Joan Masterson, 82, Mitchell, died Monday, Oct. 13.

Born Nov. 14, 1925, in Spencer County, she was the daughter of James D. and Eugenia (Strassell) Hayden.

She graduated from Butler University and attained her master’s degree at Indiana University. She retired as director of Speedway Library and previously worked at Martinsville Library, Eastwood Junior High, Chatard High School and the Indiana State Library.

She was a member of the Jacob Finger United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. She was also a volunteer with the Dunn Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.

She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Joan was a Master Gardener and had a passion for basketball and reading to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her children: Jennifer Spiegel and husband Chris Miles of England, Julia Sears of Mitchell, Janet and husband Steve Connors of Syracuse, N.Y., Jane Cohen of Poland, Ind., Phil Spiegel of Carlisle, David and wife Debbie Spiegel of Elk Grove Village, Ill, Susan Griffin of McCordsville, and Howard Masterson of Cloverdale; grandchildren: Amy Sears, Emily and husband Carl Drake, Bonnie Sears, Zoe and husband Jason Frantz, Andy Connors, Paul Connors, David and wife Anamaria Connors, Isaac and wife Danell Cohen, Anjali Cohen, Dustin Lare, Jordan Adams, Jessica Griffin, Jarrod Griffin, and Nicole Masterson; great-grandchildren: Jon Drake, Joceyln Drake, Audrianna Johnson, Jaida Cohen, and Brooklyn Reno; and many other extended family members.

Born Feb. 17, 1944, in Rochester, he was the son of Lloyd and Dolly (Kingery) Rife. He married Ellen Louise Draper on April 3, 1971.

He was a funeral director and a member of Woodville Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Ellen L. Rife of Bedford; sons: Mark Charles Rife and wife Samantha, and Michael Alan Rife, all of Orleans; a daughter, Kristina Louise Beyers and husband Nicholas of Mitchell; a sister, Carole Rife of Lewanna; and a brother, Jerry Rife of Kewanna; and seven grandchildren.

Born Oct. 28, 1951, in Bedford, he was the son of Harley and Nellie (Deckard) Stillions. He married Terri Stafford on April 10, 1971, and she survives.

He was a welder and fabricator for Reynolds, Inc. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and attended the Davis Memorial Church of the Nazarene.

Surviving with his wife, Terri, are two daughters: Bridget and Wendi Stillions, both of Bedford; one son, Joel Stillions II of Bedford; eight grandchildren: Chase, Chance and Tabin Stillions, Colby Stillions, Harleigh Kyndall Kern, Blaine Stillions, Hannah and Haleigh Williams; one brother, Gary Stillions of Bedford; one sister, Linda Cobb of Bedford; several nieces and nephews.

John Cyrus Osborn, 86, Saginaw, Mich., formerly of Bedford, passed away Sunday, Oct. 12, at Covenant-Cooper in Saginaw.

Born April 21, 1922, in Dayton, Ohio, he was the son of John William and Fannie (Brill) Osborn. He married Evelyn Wicker on June 6, 1954.

He retired from General Motors in April of 1984 after 33 years of service. During his time at General Motors, he had assignments in Bedford; Saginaw, Mich.; and Bay City, Mich.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1945 and on the USS Baldwin in Europe and Africa.

Surviving are his wife, Evelyn Osborn, Saginaw; a brother, William Osborn of Oregon; and a sister, Frances Vincent of Massachusetts.

His parents preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Memorial Chapel of the Chastain Funeral Home with Pastor Ronnie McLain officiating. She enjoyed baking cakes, traveling and boating.

Dawn attended Smithville Christian Church, and was an active participant in Miles for Myeloma.

She was a homemaker and a member of Shoals Christian Church, the American Legion Auxiliary Post 61, Eagles 2442 and Jug Rox Grandmothers Club.

Louis L. Callahan, 77, of 1680 Maul Ridge Road, Bedford, died at 9:40 a.m. on Thursday at his residence.

Born March 5, 1931, in Jackson County, he was the son of Howard and Fidella (Robertson) Callahan. He married Lavon “Bonnie” Ball on May 4, 1951, and she survives.

He retired as a truck driver after 40 years and was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Korean War and was a member of the Bedford Masonic Lodge No. 14 F&AM, Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis and Murat Temple.

Survivors include his wife, Bonnie, of Bedford; two daughters, Phyllis Callahan and Brenda Willoughby and husband J.B., all of Bedford; one son, David Callahan and wife Susan of Bedford; four grandchildren, Brad Anderson and wife Heather of Indianapolis, Amanda Swift and husband Clint of Centerpoint, and Howard Dean Callahan and Sarah Jane Callahan, both of Bedford; and one sister, Carol Callahan of Bedford.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepmother, Viola Callahan, who raised him; two brothers, Harold and Donald Callahan; and one daughter, Lois L. Anderson.

Born Aug. 28, 1917, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Ben and Hazel (Chaney) Shelton. She married Everett Chapman in 1937 and he died in 1973.

She worked at M. Fine & Sons for many years and at the Monticello Health Care. She attended the Port William Church of Christ.

Survivors include one daughter, Kaye Jeffries of Bedford; one grandson, Dana Jeffries and wife Deb of Covington; three great-grandchildren, Kevin Jeffries of Covington, Sally Moore of Kingman, and Dustin Wilson of Bloomington, Ill.; four great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Geneva Shelton of Bloomington, and Wanda Martin of Bedford; one brother, Orville “Dude” Shelton of West Virginia; and several nieces and nephews.

He retired on Jan. 3, 1983, from NWSC Crane where he was over the boiler operation in the water works. He then worked at Bender’s Handy-Man’s for six years and at Southern States Supply for three years.

John was a member of Mid-town Church of Christ and a veteran of WW II, serving with the U.S. Navy.

Virginia Sue Longest, 62, Shoals, died at 7 p.m. Monday at her residence.

She had been employed at the Bailey Shoe Company and hotel housekeeping.

Joyce Ann Ragsdale, 66, Paoli, died at 12:45 p.m. Tuesday at her residence.

Born Sept. 14, 1942, in Decatur, Ill., she was the daughter of Roy and Sylvia (Decker) Compton. She married Larry Ragsdale on Nov. 13, 1958.

She was retired from Kimball Electronics in West Baden Springs.

Survivors include her husband, Larry, of Paoli; one daughter, Robin Stewart of Heltonville; one son, Roy Ragsdale of Seymour; and three grandchildren: Jennifer Ragsdale of Seymour, Aaron Ragsdale of Salem and Chatney Ragsdale of Seymour.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Gary Roy Compton.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at McAdams Mortuary with Brother Scott McGowen officiating. Burial will be in Paoli Community Cemetery.

Ruth Q. Meyer

Ruth Q. Meyer, 65, Clarksville, passed away Oct. 11 at her residence.

She was the former Ruth Quackenbush, a native of Bedford, a Certified Public Accountant, a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), the NAMI, Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority at University of Louisville, the Louisville Male High School Alumni Association, the First Church of God in New Albany and she was a Kentucky Colonel.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester Edward Meyer Jr.; her father, Dort Randall Quackenbush; her stepfather, Charles Henry, her grandparents, Dr. M.O. and L’Mee Robertson; and her Aunt, Carolyn E. Robertson.

Survivors include her son, Lester Edward “Eddie” Meyer III; and her mother, Myra Robertson Henry. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Oak Street Chapel of Seabrook Dieckmann & Naville Funeral Homes (1846 E. Oak Street, New Albany) with burial in Cresthaven Memorial Gardens in Bedford.

Joanne J. Root, 76, Bedford, died at 12:55 a.m. Saturday at Bell Trace Health and Living Center in Bloomington.

Born Oct. 14, 1931, in Johnson City, Tenn., to Joseph Clyde and Willie Mae (Stidham) Duncan. She married Morris Dale Root Nov. 3, 1957, and he survives.

She was a homemaker and a member of Sherwood Oaks Christian Church in Bloomington. She was a graduate of Bedford High School with the Class of 1950, and a graduate of Missouri Christian College.

Surviving with her husband, Morris Dale Root of Bedford; are two sons: Jeffrey Dale Root and wife Kelly of Bloomington, and M. Darren Root and wife Michelle of Bedford; two daughters: Jan E. Briscoe, and Michelle D. Chastain and husband Shane, all of Bedford; grandchildren: AlC Andrew Root, Barksdale Air Force Base, Shreveport, La., Jordan Root, Bloomington, Corey Chastain, Meredith Root, Adam Chastain, all of Bedford, Hannah Root, Bloomington, Devon Holmes, Bedford, Makinzey Root, Bloomington, Alexander Root, Molly Chastain, and M. Chase Briscoe, all of Bedford; and one brother, J.C. Duncan and wife Joetta of Palm Springs, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, Bill Duncan.

Nori Champaine Berk, 15, Mitchell, passed away at 7 a.m. Sunday at her residence.

Born July 9, 1993, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Richard and Jessica (Dotts) Berk III.

She attended Englewood School until 2005. She loved playing music, joking around, and spending time with her family.

Nori was a member of the Holy Ridge Church in Needmore.

Surviving are her parents, Richard and Jessica Berk of Mitchell; a sister, Breanna Noel Berk of Mitchell; her grandparents, Tim and Loretta Dotts of Mitchell, and Rick Berk of Mitchell; and her great-grandmother, Wanda Pridemore, of Mitchell.

She was preceded in death by her grandmothers, Roxanne Williams and Beverly Moffatt; an aunt, Kirsten Berk; and cousin, Shianna Dotts.

Phil K. Ryors, 77, Bloomington, died Friday at his residence.

He retired as a painter for Halls of Residence at Indiana University. He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving during the Korean War.

Melvin R. Richey, 87, North Vernon, died Wednesday at his residence.

He was a native of Bennettsville and a retired machine operator at Cummings Engine Company.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his daughter, Theresa E. Kratt, Pittsburg, Pa.; a son, Richard P. Jones, Oolitic; a sister, Jean Adams of Tennessee; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Charlotte Langley, 96, of Bloomington, died Thursday at Bloomington Hospital.

She worked at the Herald-Telephone for 20 years and also at RCA for many years.

Survivors include her sons, Rudolph and Ralph David, both of Bloomington, Willis, Bedford, Terry, Ellettsville, and Martin, of South Dakota; 23 grandchildren, 53 great-grandchildren, and 24 great-great-grandchildren.

Virginia Louise Kerns Holt

Virginia Louise Kerns Holt, 85, of Bedford died at 10:25 a.m. Thursday at the Bedford Regional Medical Center.

She was born Feb. 5, 1923, in Shoals to Homer C. Kerns and Fae E. Sherfick Kerns. She married James R. Holt on Aug. 5, 1944, and he preceded her in death Dec. 8, 1980.

She worked for Al Friesenhengst and Thomas Sherfick as a bookkeeper before moving to Indianapolis in 1950. She then worked several years at Associates Life Insurance Co. She moved to Bedford in 1971 and worked at Reuter Insurance Agency until 1985.

She was a graduate of Shoals High School with the class of 1942 and was of the Christian faith. She attended all Shoals High School alumni events and was a member of the Martin County Garden Club.

Surviving are: a brother, Kermit W. Kerns and wife Joyce of Crown Point; a sister and caregiver, Carol A. Hedrick of Bedford; a sister, Wilma R. Fisher and husband Paul of Mission, Texas; a niece and caregiver, Debbie Hodge and husband Tim of Bedford; a niece and caregiver, Angie Pickett McCarty of Bedford; and several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and sister, Mary M. Olson.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery at Shoals.

Linda Lea Maddox Clark

Linda Lea Maddox Clark, 61, of Spencer, died at 3 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008, at her residence in Spencer.

She was born June 14, 1947, in Bedford to John B. Maddox and Koleeta F. Hutton Tonkin. She married Gary M. Clark Sept. 3, 1978, in Spencer, and he survives.

She resided in Logansport until the age of 12 and then the family moved to Bradenton, Fla. She graduated in 1965 from Forest Lake Academy in Bradenton. She was employed for 15 years as the receptionist at Boston Scientific. She then volunteered at the Mark Methodist Mission Store, so rightly named “In God’s Arms” in Spencer. Linda had enjoyed the mission store, church school and the work there was very important to her. Linda was a faithful member of the Spencer Seventh Day Adventist Church. Linda had fought a courageous battle with cancer, and went home to be with her Lord and Savior.

Surviving with the husband are a son, Bryan Cain and his wife, Deanna of Springville; a daughter, Angela Paris and husband Phil of Flagstaff, Ariz.; her mother, Koleeta F. Hutton Tonkin of Bedford; one step-daughter, Kim Clark of Spencer; one brother, John C. Maddox and wife Beth of Jacksonville, Fla.; a sister, Sharyn Joseph of Frederick, Md.; two grandchildren: Ashley Cain and Madison Ingram; several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her father, John B. Maddox, May 13, 2001; her step-father, Charles F. Tonkin, on Dec. 8, 2007, and her grandparents.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Spencer Seventh-day Adventist Church on Ind. 43, one mile from McCormicks Creek State Park entrance near Spencer. Pastor Dean Coridan will officiate. Burial will be in Cresthaven Memory Gardens in Bedford. Friends may call from 11 a.m. Friday until the service at Spencer Seventh-day Adventist Church.

He was born Oct. 6, 1960, in Indianapolis to Dean Clouse and Donna (O’Brien) Clouse, who survive.

He was the owner and operator of Goff Refrigeration in Bedford.

Surviving are three children: Zachary Clouse, Kelsey Clouse and Shelby Clouse, all of Bloomington; his parents; four sisters: Ladona Scrougham of Anderson, Lori Wilson and Shannon Katter, both of Indianapolis and Shelli Montarsi of Noblesville.

Cremation was chosen and burial will be at a later date.

Perry Baker, 79, 1717 23rd Street, Bedford, died at 7:59 p.m. Monday at Dunn Memorial Hospital.

Born May 9, 1929, in Bedford, he was the son of Perry and Eveline (Miller) Baker. He married Clara “Frankie” Frances Justus on Sept. 2, 1950, and she survives.

He retired from GM in 1985 after 35 years. He was owner and broker of Baker Realty. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Lions Club, Bedford Supper Club, life member of BPOE No. 826 of Bedford and past president of the Bedford Board of Realtors

Survivors include his wife, Frankie of Bedford, three children: Deborah “Debbie” Beasley and husband Kevin, Jeffrey C. Baker, and Joseph Drew Baker and his wife Misty, all of Bedford; four grandchildren: R. Michael Beasley of Shreveport, La., Juleigh M. Beasley of Bedford, Spc. Justin M. Baker of Bedford, Mathew A. Baker of Bedford, five great-grandchildren: Hannah, Caleb, Elizabeth, Abigail and Joshua Beasley all of Shreveport, La.; and one brother, Scott L. Baker of Williams.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He loved to read, write, play with his grandkids, and spend time with his family.

Survivors include one daughter, Michelle Bickers and fiancé Matt Elliott of Bedford; one son, Scott Bickers and fiancée Shameh Redman of Bedford; two grandchildren: Nicholas Bickers and Braxton Bickers, both of Bedford; two brothers; Charles Bickers and wife Elvadean, and Kenneth Bingham and wife Sabrina of Bedford; five sisters: Belinda Dennis and husband Rick, Ronnie Bickers and fiancé Mike Kast, Deanie McAdams, Kelley Milner and fiancé Gerald Baker, and Katrina Fish, all of Bedford; many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews; and his former wife, Kim Bickers of Cincinnati, Ohio.

She was born Dec. 4, 1910, in Monroe County, the daughter of Vada and Bertha (Heltonburg) Cracraft. She married Horace Meadows Jan. 17, 1931, and he preceded her in death Feb. 1, 1981.

She was a homemaker and known for her expert needlework and sewing skills. She was a member of the Sherwood Oaks Christian Church in Bloomington.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, James; sisters: Delores and Thelma; and brother, Russell.

She is survived by two daughters: Martha (Dwight) Bartlett of Bedford, and Lana Meadows of Plantation, Fla.; a son, Jack (Becky) Meadows of Bedford; four grandchildren: Michelle (Darren) Root, Mellonie Dixon, Amy Garrison and Melissa (Mark) Day, all of Bedford; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters: Wilma Jean Cornwell and Betty Boyer of Bloomington; and a brother, Vasel Cracraft of Reynoldsburg, Ohio.

Born Nov. 30, 1978, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of George and Tommie (Glover) Daughtery. She married Marvin York.

She was a graduate of Bedford North Lawrence High School, and attended Vincennes University. She was a member of Dive Christian Church.

Survivors include her mother, Tommie McSoley of Bedford; one daughter, Abagail York, at home; one sister, Shannon Arnold of Bedford; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Kelley McSoley; her father, George Daugherty; and her stepfather, Gregory McSoley.

Kam Hung ‘Henry’ Wong

Kam Hung “Henry” Wong, 46, of 101 Heltonville Road West, died Saturday, at Dunn Memorial Hospital in Bedford.

Born June 24, 1962, he was the son of Kwok Chau and Chuk Chui (Cheung) Wong. He married Sai Hua “Sarah” Zhang on Feb. 28, 1989, in Guangzhou, China, and she survives.

He was a 1981 graduate of William Henry Harrison High School in Evansville. He graduated from Purdue University in 1985 and received his master’s degree from the University of Evansville. In 1981, he helped his parents open and operate the House of Hong Kong restaurant in Evansville. He worked at NSWC Crane as a chemical engineer. In November 1994 he opened the Empress Court in Bedford with his wife Sarah.

Henry loved soccer, computers, and video games. He was a coach for the Orbit soccer league as well as an active coach for the Limestone Girls Club.

Survivors include his parents, Kwok Chau and Chuk Chui Wong of Evansville; his wife Sai Hua “Sarah” Wong of Bedford; one daughter, Ashley Wong; one son, Alexander Wong; both at home; two sisters: May Francis and her husband Ken, and Kim Wong, all of Evansville; one brother, Howard Wong and his wife Greta of Evansville; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday from the Elmwood Chapel of Day & Carter Mortuary in Bedford with the Rev. Dr. Kregg Burris officiating. Burial graveside rites will be at 2 p.m. (CST) on Thursday, in the Park Lawn Cemetery in Evansville.

He was born April 28, 1936, in Lawrence County, the son of Thomas and Edna (Covey) Crozier. He married Jacklyn Browning on April 13, 1979, and she survives.

He was retired from Dana Manufacturing in Mitchell.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Seabees.

Survivors include his mother, Edna Charles of Oolitic; his wife, Jacklyn Crozier of East Oolitic; one son, Daniel Crozier and wife Brittany of Springville; two daughters, Sarah Patton and husband Joshua of Crawford County, and Mellisa Crozier of East Oolitic; one grandchild, Rhiley Patton; one brother, Jerry Crozier and wife Mary of East Oolitic; two sisters, Sharon Nikirk and husband Danny, and Brenda Terrell and husband Roger, all of Needmore; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father; one son, Jerry Wayne Crozier; and three brothers, Kenny, Howard and Thomas Crozier.

He worked as a laborer and saw runner at the Victor–Oolitic stone quarry.

Survivors include his companion, Tandi Tipton of Springville; two sons, Logan Tipton of Bedford and Mason “Bubba” Tipton of Springville; one daughter Haven Rose Tipton of Springville; his father Lester E. Tipton Sr. of Mitchell; one brother, Clifton Tipton of Bedford; two sisters, Katrina Craig of Mitchell and Crystal Tipton of Noblesville; and his maternal grandmother, Janet Glasgow of Springville.

Anna Lee Rodgers, 82, of Cambridge, ID, passed away Tuesday, September 30, 2008, in Weiser, ID.

Born September 1, 1926, in Monroe County, she was the daughter of John W. and Myrtle (Hayes) Terrell.

Anna worked for the Civil Service Department of Defense for 45 distinguished years. She was a graduate of Smithville High School, and was of the Latter Day Saints faith.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Mervin G. Rodgers Sr. (2003); a sister, Pauline Floyd; and a brother, Lester Terrell.

Rosemary Butler Monday

Rosemary Butler Monday, 75, of Indianapolis, formerly of French Lick, died Friday in Lebanon, Ind.

She was a beautician, operated several businesses in French Lick and West Baden Springs, was a department manager for Kmart in Shelbyville and Bedford and managed Crestwood Apartments in Indianapolis.

Survivors include her husband, Bobby Monday; one daughter, Christy L. Smith of Peru, Ind.; two brothers, Warren Butler of Bartlett, and John B. Butler of Scottsburg; and three sisters, Jeanne Stalcup of Paoli, Ruth Sager of Greencastle and Betty Wininger of Lafayette.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Brosmer-Kemple Funeral Home in French Lick. Burial will be at Sulphur Creek Cemetery in French Lick.

Ronald H. Fortner, 76, of Bloomington, died Friday at Bloomington Hospital.

Born April 20, 1932, in Lawrence County, he was the son of John and Blanche (Brown) Fortner.

He was retired from the Indiana University Department of Physics, where he was a machinist.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran, and attended Bridge Church of Christ in Bloomington.

Survivors include his wife, Rita Fortnee, whom he married Feb. 15, 1963, in Bloomington; one daughter, Treva Fortner of Bloomington; one son, Terry Fortner and wife Nicole of Hartford City; four brothers, Robert Fortner, Denny Fortner, Larry Fortner and Jerry Fortner, all of Bedford.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Marilyn Blackburn; and two brothers, James Fortner and John Fortner Jr.

Services will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Cresthaven Funeral Home in Bedford, with Brother Russell Minett officiating. Entombment will be at Cresthaven Memory Gardens.

Carl David Denen, 67, Orleans, passed away at 2:48 a.m. Friday at Jewish Hospital in Louisville, Ky.

Born Oct. 29, 1940, in Mitchell, he was the son of Mildred Denen. He married Brenda K. Burton on Oct. 5, 1969.

He retired from General Motors Powertrain. He graduated from Mitchell High School in 1960 and was a member of the Mitchell Church of the Nazarene.

He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran.

Surviving with his wife, Brenda of Orleans, are daughters, Angela Gammon and husband David of Mitchell, and Stacy New and husband Danny of Bedford; grandchildren, Breanna New, Jamie Gammon, Tucker New, Owan New and Jordan New; brothers, Larry Tyler of Mitchell, and Jerry Tyler of Oregon; sister, Brenda Reynolds of Mitchell; and aunt, Maxine Burgess of Mitchell.

His mother, and sister, Beverly Kirk, preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday in the Memorial Chapel of the Chastain Funeral Home with the Rev. Mark Bechtel officiating. Burial will be in Mitchell Cemetery with military honors accorded by Cecil C. Martin American Legion Post No. 250 and Marvin R. Davis Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9107.

He retired from Dana Manufacturing in Mitchell. He was a U.S. Navy veteran.

Survivors include his mother, Edna Charles, Oolitic; his wife, Jacklyn Crozier, East Oolitic; one son, Daniel Crozier, Springville; two daughters, Sarah Patton, of Crawford County, and Mellisa Crozier, East Oolitic; one grandchild; one brother, Jerry Crozier, East Oolitic; two sisters, Sharon Nikirk, and Brenda Terrell, both of Needmore; and several nieces and nephews.

Ronald Lee Neidigh, 74, of Bloomington, died Wednesday at the Golden Living Center in Bloomington.

He had worked as a carpenter for Neidigh Construction.

He was a U.S. Army veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Louise A. Neidigh; two daughters, Alicia Neidigh, Bloomington, and Starla Neidigh, Sullivan; two sons, Terry Neidigh and Tom Neidigh, both of Bloomfield; six brothers, Russell Neidigh, Bedford, Fred Neidigh, Darrel Neidigh and Steve Neidigh, all of Bloomfield, and Loren Neidigh and Larry Neidigh, both of Ellettsville; and one sister, Cheryl VanPelt of Solsberry.

Robert L. Earl

Robert L. Earl, 86, of 4850 Old Farm Road, Springville, died at 3:35 a.m. on Thursday at the White River Lodge in Bedford.

Born Oct. 4, 1921 in Shoals, he was the son of Plummer Earl and Myrtle (Salmon) Marsey. He married Doris Anderson on March 14, 1943 and she survives.

He retired from the Springville Post Office in 1983 after completing 27 years of service as a rural letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service. Robert was a veteran of World War II serving in the Army Air Corp. He participated in the Normandy invasion and waded ashore at Omaha beach on D-day and he received a citation for service during the Battle of the Bulge.

He was a member of the Rural Letter Carriers Assoc. and was of the Protestant faith.

Survivors include his wife, Doris of Springville; one son, Steve Earl and wife Cindy of Springville; one daughter, Brenda Mowery and husband Donald of Bedford; four grandchildren, Donna Anderson and husband Mark, Kimberly Perry and husband Sam Perry, Jr., Melissa Murphy and husband Pat, and Damon Earl and wife Kimberly; 11 great-grandchildren, Jordan and Alan Anderson, Ava and Rylan Perry, Erin, Katie, Andrew and Jacob Murphy, and Dakota, Dalton and Dawson Earl.

He was preceded in death by his parents and step-father, Ralph Marsey.

Private services will be conducted at a later date with burial in the Springville Christian Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded at the graveside by members of Gillen Post No. 33 American Legion.

Viola Nolan, 87, Baton Rouge, La., formerly of Bedford, died at 8:30 p.m. Monday at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge.

She was born Dec. 14, 1920, in Indianapolis, the daughter of Walter and Minnie (Reeves) Newbold. She first married Donovan Smart and he preceded her in death. She then married John Stafford, who preceded her in death. She later married Orland “Nubby” Nolan, who also preceded her in death in 1978.

She was a cook at several places, last working at Bedford Nursing Home, retiring in 1981.

She was a member of Hillcrest Christian Church in Bedford, the Moose Auxiliary No. 689 of Bedford, VFW Auxiliary No. 1686 of Oolitic, and the American Legion Auxiliary No. 163, Eau Gallie, Fla.

Survivors include one son, Robert Smart and wife Linda of Baton Rouge; one daughter, Dianna Smith and husband Billy of Melbourne, Fla.; 10 grandchildren: Don Short and wife Teresa of Bedford, Terry Luttrell and husband Jon of Bedford, Becky Johnson and husband Kenny of Bedford, Sheila Smith and Chris Russak, both of Indianapolis, Jim Troxel and wife Amy of Wellford, S.C., Robin Freeland and husband Russ of New Ross, Norman Smart and wife Kathy of Greensburg, Ron Wright and wife PearlAnn of Oolitic, and Viola Guidry and husband Eddie of Port Allen, La.; and 28 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three brothers; three sisters; one son in infancy; one granddaughter, Kathy Paff; and one great-granddaughter, Gina Troxel.

James F. Raimondi, 55, 8556 Lacorrida Court, Indianapolis, previously of Mitchell, died Monday at his residence of natural causes.

Born Nov. 25, 1952, in Indianapolis, he was the son of Frank L. and Elsie (McKibben) Raimondi. He married Candy L. Marass on Nov. 5, 1983, and she survives.

He was a computer technician and previously owned Dewizard Computer in Orleans. He attended Northwest High in Indianapolis; Special Deputy Training at I.U., Indianapolis; and computer training at Naval Avionics.

He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and a member of Our Lady of the Greenwood Catholic Church in Greenwood.

Survivors include his mother, Elsie Raimondi Jackson, Indianapolis; his wife, Candy L. Raimondi, Indianapolis; two daughters: Laura Baker (Scott), and Teresa Barker (James), all of Greenfield; one son, Jesse Raimondi, Indianapolis; grandchildren: Austin, Megan, and Jillian Baker, and Austin, Rebecca and Samantha Barker; one brother, Cosmas A. Raimondi, Greenwood; four nieces; and two nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Frank L. Raimondi; his grandparents, Cosimo and Josephine Raimondi, and James and Violet McKibben; one brother, Jerry Kidwell; and one son, Frank James Raimondi.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Bedford, with Father Rick Eldred officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Shoals.

He was retired from the former Carpenter Body Works of Mitchell. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors include his wife, Violet Jones, Paoli; a son, George Jones, Indianapolis; two sisters: Fern Sanders, Orleans, and Madeline Quinn, French Lick and two grandchildren.

William Ray Owens, 66, of I Street, Bedford, died at 2:36 p.m Sunday at Bedford Regional Medical Center.

He was born May 26, 1942, in Mineral in Greene County, the son of Willie and Kay (Allen) Owens. He married Elizabeth Connors on June 16, 1982, and she survives.

He was a Chief Master Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force for 30 years, retiring in 1990, then was at NWSC Crane for 15 years, retiring in 2006. He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, was an avid golfer and a devoted family man.

Surviving with his wife, Elizabeth “Betty” Owens of Bedford; are one daughter, Chrissy Rose and husband John of Florida; five sons: John Lardner and wife Cindy of California, Marc Owens and wife Laura of California, Steve Owens of California, Brent Owens and wife Kara of Indianapolis, and Gaven Owens of Bedford; five grandchildren; four brothers: Curt Owens and wife Karen of Harrodsburg, Doyle Owens and wife Gina of Granger, Sherrill Owens and wife Deb of Springville and Kenny Owens and wife Kathi of Bedford; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Keith Owens in 1981.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church with Father Rick Eldred officiating. Burial will be in Springville Methodist West Cemetery.

Vida S. Reynolds

Vida Sue Reynolds, 78, of Bedford, died Tuesday at the Bloomington Hospital in Bloomington.

Born March 27, 1930, in Fairfax, Va., she was one of 13 children of Elmer O. and Mayme B. (Barker) Blevins. She married Gail Reynolds and he survives.

Sue was a devout Christian, a homemaker, loving wife, mother and grandmother.

Survivors include Gail, her husband of 56 years, of Bedford; their children: Glenda Reynolds, Lori Keith and husband Micah, Albert Reynolds and wife Violet, and Brian Reynolds and wife Kim, all of Bedford; seven grandchildren; her loving dog, Heidi; four sisters: Francis Rembert, Lue Sheets (Sue’s twin) and Lois Elliott, all of Virginia, and Edie Bibb of North Dakota; and one brother, Doug Blevins in Virginia.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters: Shirley, Estella and Darlene; and brothers: Kenny and Charlie.

Gail and Sue operated the Skyhaven Auction Center, where she ran the snack bar. She enjoyed visiting with the many friends made over several years and sharing in their lives.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Pastors Danny Goens and Brad Clark officiating. Burial will follow in the Indian Creek Primitive Baptist Cemetery in Williams.

Joyce R. Bergdoll

Dec. 23, 1929 — Sept. 30, 2008

Joyce R. Bergdoll, of George Johnson Road, passed away peacefully at 11:12 a.m. Tuesday in her hospital room at the age of 78. Joyce has been courageously battling cancer since 1996, but she never let that define her personality. She was an incredibly generous person with her love and whoever was in the room felt her enormous heart touch their lives.

She was born Dec. 23, 1929, in Pike County, the daughter of Leonis and Edith (Way) Lindsey. She married James R. Bergdoll and he survives.

Her favorite times were spent with her family (although we all knew her dog Sammy came first!). She also enjoyed playing cards (with the same group of women for over 30 years), traveling, and socializing with the community that surrounded her.

She was preceded in death by her three children: Peggy Hanners, Ginger Ragsdale and Steve Bergdoll, eight of her siblings: James Windall Lindsey, Anna Leigh Lindsey, William Lawrence Lindsey, Clifford Herbert (Bud) Lindsey, Alfred Russel Lindsey, David Linden Lindsey, Ivan Amill Lindsey and Gary Leon Lindsey.

She is survived by her soulmate of 61 years, James R. Bergdoll; her brother, Phillip Ronald Lindsey, six grandchildren: Shane R. Baron Caudill, Shannon Caudill, Brandy Hanners, Julie Hanners, Christine Bergdoll and Gregory Bergdoll; and two great-grandchildren, Joshua Bergdoll and Elijah R. Baron Caudill.

Joyce and her husband Jim, active members of the Leesville United Methodist Church, were also very involved in the farming community with their own farm, JRB Farms in Leesville as well as JRB Ford tractor sales in Seymour. After retiring from the tractor sales business in 1992 Joyce was able to spend more time enjoying life with her family and friends.

Joyce will be dearly missed by her family and friends, but we are richer and truly blessed for having her be a part of our lives for so many years.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Leesville United Methodist Church with Pastor Dan Voorhies officiating. Burial will follow in the Leesville Cemetery.

He was disabled.

Survivors included three sisters: Tangie Jarrard, Bonita Springs, Fla., Sally Elliott, Red Wing, Minn., and Margie Riley, Kingwood, Texas; three nephews; and one niece.
