Russell L. McBride, 89, Bedford, died at 10:05 p.m. Wednesday at Garden Villa in Bedford.
Born Oct. 25, 1918, in Orange County, he was the son of Arthur and Lois (Rogers) McBride. He married Helen Babcock on Dec. 24, 1948, and she survives.
He was a retired farmer and a veteran of World War II, having served in the Army. He was a member of North Bedford Church of Christ.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Lee and Banks McBride; and one grandson-in-law, Anthony Brockett.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Helen (Babcock) McBride of Bedford; one son, Larry McBride and wife Brenda of Columbia, Mo.; three daughters: Linda Wininger and husband Ralph of Orleans, Marilyn Hunter and husband Don of Bedford, and Melba Edwards and husband John Paul of Ellettsville; one brother, Harold McBride and wife Charlotte of New Port Richey, Fla., two sisters: Evelyn Gray of Paoli and Helen Pavey of Brazil; three sisters-in-law: Charlotte McBride of Florida, Kathryn Bostock of Paoli and Lois Babcock of Paoli; seven grandchildren: Tina Brockett, Reggie McBride, Amy Pantone, Trenton Reynolds, Adria Edwards, John I. Edwards, and Rebekah Edwards; 11 great-grandchildren: Taylor and Peyton McBride, Ashley, Rylan, Hayden, Calley and Shaley Brockett, Tristan Pantone, and John Mark, Nicholas and Jared Edwards.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Cresthaven Funeral Home in Bedford. Entombment will follow at Cresthaven Memory Gardens.

Mary A. Collins, 66, Mitchell, died at 10:18 a.m. Monday at Dunn Memorial Hospital.
Born Dec. 3, 1941, in Perry County, she was the daughter of Zenor and Minnie (Carr) Underhill. She married Donald Collins in 1990, and he preceded her in death on Jan. 22, 1997.
She was a waitress at Hobby’s Inn for many years and a homemaker.
She was a graduate of Oil Township High School in Tell City.
Survivors include four stepdaughters: Nancy Mack of Panama City, Panama, Sharon Goodpasture, French Lick, Brenda Lamar, Huron and Susan Deckard of Mitchell; one stepson, Joe Collins of French Lick; one sister, Priscilla Cunningham of Mitchell; two nephews: Patrick Cunningham of Mitchell and Wes Cunningham of San Francisco; several grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one stepdaughter, Rita Bell, and one stepson, Greg Collins.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home in Bedford with Brother Bob Courson and Brother Max Abel officiating. Burial will follow at Cresthaven Memory Gardens.

Born June 8, 1933, in Pinhook, she was the daughter of Victor and Alberta (Myers) Mathis. She married Don Faris on Dec. 31, 1955, and he survives.
She retired as a bookkeeper from the Bedford National Bank. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bedford and a long-time volunteer with the Auxiliary at the Bedford Regional Medical Center.
Survivors include her husband, Don of Bedford; two sons: Mike Faris and wife Jennifer of Bedford and Tommy Faris and wife Crystal of Kansas City, Mo.; four grandchildren: Naphtali, Thomas, Jeremy and Timothy; two brothers: Max Mathis and wife Dorothy of Bargersville, and Carrol Mathis and wife Joan of Buddha; one sister, Nancy Bramer and husband Kenneth of Clarksville.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters: Marie Borden and June Hudson, and one brother, Howard Mathis.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Friday at First Baptist Church in Bedford with the Rev. Dr. Tommy Faris and the Rev. Dr. Kregg Burris officiating. Entombment will follow at Cresthaven Memory Gardens.

Derek D. Harrison, 47, 10 Harrison Road, Mitchell, passed away at 6:30 a.m. Friday at his residence.
Born Sept. 19, 1960, in Bedford, he was the son of Robert and Margaret (McAfee) Harrison. He married Jyl Ann Ziegler on Oct. 15, 1983.
He was a registered respiratory therapist and was employed at Bloomington Hospital. He graduated from Loogootee High School in 1978.
He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and a member of the Cecil C. Martin American Legion Post No. 250.
Survivors include his wife, Jyl A. Harrison, Mitchell; a daughter, Andrea Michelle Harrison, Mitchell; sons, Nathan Robert Harrison, Mitchell, and Eric Scott Harrison, Fort Sam Houston, Texas; his father, Robert Harrison, Loogootee; a brother, Darren Goins, Indianapolis; a sister, Lori Moore, Bloomington, and four grandchildren.
His mother, Margaret Harrison, and stepson, Ronald Allen Jr., preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Memorial Chapel of the Chastain Funeral Home in Mitchell. Burial will follow in Mitchell Cemetery with military honors accorded by Cecil C. Martin American Legion Post No. 250 and the Marvin R. Davis Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9107.

Born Dec. 16, 1946, in Charlestown, he was the son of Wayne and Catherine (Weir) Fender. He married Paulette K. Kester on July 1, 1989, in Ocala, Fla., and she survives.
He was a Wal-Mart employee and a member of the Southland Church of Christ.
Survivors include his father, Wayne Fender of Bedford; his wife, Paulette Fender of Bedford; one son, Ernest Fender, Spring Hill, Fla.; four sisters, Marilyn Miller, Virginia Cunningham, Mary Wessel, and Brenda Brummett, all of Bedford; two stepbrothers, Winford Headdy of Grand Junction, Colo., and Jerry Headdy of Greenwood; his mother-in-law, Jean Kester of Fairmont W.Va.; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother; one stepsister, Doris Anderson; and stepmother, Daphene Fender.
A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Southland Church of Christ in Bedford, with Brother Bud Smith officiating.

Icey M. Crane, 77, of East Oolitic, went to be with the Lord on Thursday at the Bedford Regional Medical Center.
She was born on June 13, 1930, in Liberty, Ky., to William and Mary (Wall) Gilpin. She married Charles J. Crane on March 5, 1949, in Paoli, and he preceded her in death on August 20, 1992.
She was a devoted mother, homemaker, and a member of the East Oolitic Community Church. She was a friend to all and loved by everyone who knew her. She loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed life and visiting relatives in Kentucky, Iowa and Ohio, especially Anna Mae, Virgie, Jewel and Iva D.
Survivors include one sister, Iva D. Mundy of Cincinnati, Ohio; four children, Carolyn M. Banks of Bloomington, Betty L. Baker of Springville, Charles L. Crane of Bedford and Dave R. Crane of Bloomington; eight grandchildren, Troy A. Baker, Angela Hofman, Trisha Parker, Melissa Crane, Matthew Crane, Jared Crane, Shelby Crane and Amanda Crane; and 10 great-grandchildren, Drew, Evan and Cole Baker, Abigail and Audrey Parker, Kinsley Shumacher, Bryant, Haylie, Emma and Ethan Crane.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Melvin E. Buchanan, 87, Mitchell, formerly of Crawford County, passed away at 2:50 p.m. Tuesday at Bedford Regional Medical Center. Born Oct. 11, 1920, in Orange County, he was the son of John and Alice (Bennett) Buchanan. He married Alice Bernice Mosson May 7, 1948, and she preceded him in death in April of 2000. He married Pearl (Thompson) Deckard on Oct. 11, 2003.
He was a farmer and construction worker and was retired from Mulzer Crushed Stone.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of Spice Valley Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Pearl Buchanan of Mitchell; sons: Larry Melvin Buchanan and wife Patricia of Paoli and David Eugene Buchanan and wife Zola of English; daughters: Patty Jean Landreth and husband Monty of Salem and Sheila Yvonne Buchanan of Taswell; stepdaughters: Regina Sorrells, of Mitchell, Dianna Kay Webb and husband Lee of Mitchell, Nedra Hardwick and husband Jerry of Bedford, Geni Clouse and husband Steve of Palm Coast, Fla., Marlena Swartz and husband Randay of Mitchell, and Kim Dorsett of Bedford; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Reba Mae Raines, 97, of 1079 Fayetteville-Owensburg Road, Bedford, went to be with the Lord at 3:50 p.m. Wednesday at her residence.
Born March 24, 1910, in Martin County, she was the daughter of Noah and Martha Elizabeth (Roberts) Baker. She married Henry Raines on March 24, 1924, and he preceded her in death on August 5, 1961.
She was a homemaker, of the Pentecostal faith and a member of the House of Prayer Church in Fayetteville where she played the piano for over 60 years. She was featured on the WHAS-TV 11 Louisville Tonight Show where she appeared along with her brother on an oldest twins segment. At age 97, she played the harmonica with the Second Shift Bluegrass Band for the residents of Mitchell Manor Nursing Home.
Survivors include four sons: Wendell Raines and wife Adeline of Dunkirk, Harold Raines and wife Joni, Charles David Raines and wife Sue, Bill Raines and wife Melody, all of Fayetteville; six daughters: Martha Bolton, Geraldine Dunn and husband Jack and Elizabeth Lea Craig, all of Fayetteville, Sue Murphy and Betty McGill, both of Bedford, and Lorena New and husband Daniel of Avoca; 34 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one grandson, Douglas Bolton; three brothers: Dolphus, Millard and Willie (her twin) Baker; two sisters: Nellie Polk and Nannie Elizabeth Baker; one son, Donald Raines and one daughter, Margaret Raines.

Dale F. “Red” Miller, 95, of 127 Edgewood Drive, Bedford, passed away at 3:40 p.m. Saturday at Garden Villa in Bedford.
Born on Oct. 1, 1912, in Bedford, he was the son of Elmer Miller and Pearl (Gyger) Miller.
He retired from Tool & Die at NWSC Crane and also from farming. Mr. Miller was of Baptist Faith, a Veteran of World War II serving in the Navy and a member of the Bedford American Legion Gillen Post No. 33. He was an avid high school basketball fan.
He first married Frances Baugh and she passed away May 3, 1936; he then married Betty L. Girdley on Feb. 16, 1952, and she survives.
Surviving in addition to his wife, Betty; is one daughter, Marilyn A. Hayes and husband Frank of Bedford; three grandchildren, Cathy A. Goodin and husband Pat of Bedford, Kimberly J. Hall and husband Danny of Bedford and J.D. Hayes of Bedford; nine great-grandchildren, Natalie Buente and husband Brian, Justin Goodin and wife Jennifer, Shannon Spires and husband Joey, Nathan Hall and wife Holly, Lauren Simpson and husband Brian, Baron Hall and wife Erica, Alex Crane, and Wil Hayes and Anna Hayes; one sister, Marjorie Artis and husband Glenn of Kokomo; eight great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Frances; one sister, Thelma Evans; and two brothers, Bill and Don Miller.

Born Aug. 20, 1927, in Bedford, she was the daughter of Archie and Dellia (Goldsby) Melvin. She married Eugene F. Snowden on Jan. 5, 1946. He preceded her in death Nov. 9, 1989.
She was a homemaker.
She attended Madden School. She attended Salvation Army Church and was a member of the Salvation Army Home League. She also enjoyed being with her grandchildren.
Survivors include one son, Fred Snowden, and wife Peggy of Bedford; one daughter, Linda Romine of Bedford; six grandchildren, Teresa Turner and husband Terry of Heltonville, Andrea King of Homosassa, Fla., Billy King of Bedford, Eric King of Bedford, Charla Westerfeld and husband Patrick of Batesville, and Shannon Nicholson and husband Danny of Bedford; two great-grandchildren, Whitney King of Indianapolis and Brady Westerfeld of Batesville; and one brother, William Melvin and wife Margie of Bloomington.

He was born Sept. 16, 1925, in Dubois County, the son of Frank and Louise (Feirbach) Brosmer. He married Lucille Rice in 1945 in Virginia, and she preceded him in death in 1974.
He was a roofer.
He was a member of the Precious Blood Catholic Church in Jasper, a member of the American Legion Gillen Post No. 33 of Bedford, the Bedford FOP and the Jasper VFW. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II and was a recipient of the Purple Heart.
Survivors include one son, Ralph H. Brosmer of Bedford; one daughter, Carolyn S. Good of Bedford; four grandchildren, Shelly Sturgeon of Bloomington, Robert Brosmer of Bloomington, Dan Good of Truckee, Calif., and Rick Good of Bedford; six great-grandchildren; one brother, Ralph Brosmer of Dubois; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, six brothers; and one granddaughter, Cynthia Ann Good.

He was a laborer with Local No. 741 for 23 years. He was a member of the NRA and ABATE, and enjoyed fishing, hunting and being outdoors.
Survivors include his companion, Della Henson; two daughters: Timber Landstrum and husband Josh of Bedford; and Tonya Feathers, Bedford; two stepdaughters: Danesah and Samantha Henson, both of Springville; one grandson: Tyson Feathers of Bedford; two granddaughters: Emma and Bella Landstrum, both of Bedford; one brother, Joe Baker of Bedford; one sister, Suzann Holt of Bedford; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Wanda Marie Baker and one brother, Kenny Baker Jr.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home in Bedford. Burial will follow in the House of Prayer Cemetery in Fayetteville.

Lois S. Fields, 65, of 160 S. Leatherwood Road, Bedford, died at 4:45 a.m. Tuesday at her residence.
Born June 19, 1942, in Detroit, Mich., she was the daughter of Gladwin “Barney” and Kathlene (Butler) Kubu. She married Larry Fields May 29, 1965, and he survives.
She retired from the NWSC Crane as an ordinance worker in 1994. Lois was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She loved animals, flowers antiques and was an avid collector of many things. She enjoyed drawing and was quite artistic.
Surviving with her husband, Larry; are three sons: Keith and Stacy Fields, both of Bedford and John Fields of Seymour; three grandchildren: Joshua, Samual and Makala; and one sister, Carol Prathatakus of South Bend.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Friday from the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Johnny Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Dive Cemetery.

Bernice M. Norman, 98, of Bedford, passed away in her sleep at 4:50 a.m. Tuesday at the White River Lodge in Bedford.
Born October 9, 1909, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Alvin and Ida May (Kindred) Cummings. She married Clifford Norman on June 11, 1927, and he preceded her in death on December 6, 1978.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Hillcrest Christian Church in Bedford.
Survivors include one son, Morris Norman and his wife, Jeanette of Bedford; one daughter, Oweetah Blackburn of Greenwood; five grandchildren: Brett Norman, Rhonda Whitehead, Diedra Wykoff, Ty Blackburn and Terri Hoover; nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford; her parents; a son-in-law, Howard Blackburn; a great-grandson, Parker Whitehead; seven brothers: Roy Cummings, Rollie Cummings, Alfred Cummings, Jim Clampitt, Orville Cummings, Harry Cummings and Charles Cummings; and one sister, Mae Johnson.

Born January 1, 1952, she was the daughter of Morris and Mary (Brazzell) Lee. She married Reese Hightshue and he preceded her in death in March of 2003.
She was retired from the Indiana Department of Corrections and was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving as a Sergeant.
Survivors include her mother, Mary Lee of Bedford; one daughter, Shannon Johnson; three grandchildren; two sisters: Lori Lee and Susan Massette both of Bedford; two brothers: Kurt and Alan Lee both of Bedford; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father and husband.
Funeral services were Tuesday from the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Sister Joan Luerman officiating. Cremation will follow.

Ira D. “Chig” Chenault, 92, of Bedford, died Thursday at his residence.
Born May 24, 1915, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Felix and Josie (Vaughn) Chenault. He married Alberta Collier on March 10, 1947, in Bedford, and she survives.
He was a retired mechanic from Indiana Limestone Co. in Bedford. He was also a carpenter.
He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy, where he was a mine sweeper.
He attended Calvary Chapel Church in Bedford and loved the woods, dogs, fishing and little children.
Survivors include his devoted wife of 60 years, Alberta Chenault; two sons, Phillip Chenault and wife Eva of Morgantown, and Ronald Chenault and wife Virginia of Rock Valley, Iowa; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Larry Chenault of Bedford; and four sisters, Patty Cain of South Dakota, Margie Pillow of Booneville, and Norma Jean Ryan and Evelyn Eads, both of Bedford.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Kenneth (‘Coke’) Chenault, Felix (‘Bucky’) Chenault and Ray Chenault; and three sisters, Mary Harris, Helen Hollars and Juanita Bennett.
Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Cresthaven Funeral Home in Bedford. Pastor Jim McDowell will officiate, and Don Bridges will sing “How Beautiful Heaven Must Be.” Burial will be at Cresthaven Memory Gardens, with graveside rites conducted by by American Legion Post #33 of Bedford.

Born April 14, 1924, in Paoli, she was the daughter of Clyde Beatty and Nettie Hankins Beatty. She married Charles L. Wilson on Sept. 14, 1946, and he survives.
She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church in Mitchell.
Survivors also include two sons, Barry Wilson of Indianapolis and Harry Wilson of Mitchell; one daughter, Terrie Mae Moffatt and her husband, Tim, of Paoli; three grandchildren, Melissa Adams of Bedford, Derrick Wilson of Indianapolis and Jennifer Daly of Dallas, Texas, and one great-grandson, Braden E. Wilson of Bedford.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one grandson, Garrett Moffatt.

Kenneth Ray Howard, 41, French Lick, passed way Thursday at Dunn Memorial Hospital in Bedford.
He was born Dec. 16, 1966, in French Lick to Keith B. Howard and Carolyn S. Cooper Howard.
He was preceded in death by his father Keith B. Howard and grandparents Irene and Paul Stackhouse, Kenneth Howard, Levi Deich and Omel Cooper.
Kenneth was youth minister at Woodville Baptist Church in Mitchell and a radio personality at Spirit 95 in Bloomington. He had formerly been a radio personality at Q-100 in French Lick, WBDC in Huntingburg, and WRBT in Mt. Carmel, Ill.
He was a 1985 graduate of Springs Valley High School in French Lick.
Survivors include a daughter, Elizabeth Marie Howard, Mitchell; his mother, Carolyn S. Howard, French Lick; two brothers, Joseph Lynn Howard, Bloomfield and James Lawrence Howard, Columbus; one sister, Irene Mae Millington, Greenwood; his grandmother, Cora M. Donald L. Roberts, 75, Bedford, passed away at 4:40 a.m. Monday at Westview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Bedford.
Born Dec. 8, 1932, in Bedford, he was the son of Lee and Clara (Adamson) Roberts. He married Wilma Hayes July 4, 1954.
Don was considered the oldest new and used car salesman in Lawrence County. He sold Ford, Lincoln, Mercury, Pontiac, Buick and Jeep as well as late model used cars at Don Roberts Enterprises. He drove stock cars and announced at local racetracks. He was an avid NASCAR fan as well as a Pacers, Colts and IU fan.
He served in the Army National Guard A50-60 and was a graduate of Shawswick High School.
Survivors include his wife, Wilma Roberts of Bedford; daughter, Sue Compton and husband Danny of Mitchell; grandchildren: Julia Halligan, Ryan Gerkin, and Angela Kirtley; several step grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
His parents; brothers, Skip and Jerry Roberts; and sister, Barbara Jean Roberts, preceded him in death.

He was born on Oct. 25, 1911, to Burlington and Sue (Melton) Kress. He married Anna G. Baker on Aug. 5, 1938.
Jack was a coal miner for 43 years and a dragline operator at Peabody Coal Company. He was a member of Saron United Methodist Church in Linton where he served on the board, Masonic Lodge No. 560 F&AM, Scottish Rite Valley of Terre Haute, Zorah Shrine, Greene County Shrine Club where he served as club president twice, member of the Tin Lizzies and Elks BPO No. 866.
Survivors include his wife, Anna G. Kress; two sons: Jack Alan (Donna Jean) Kress of Bedford and Tom Kress of Montecito, Calif.; and one grandson, Curtis Wade Kress of Bedford. Also surviving are five great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Peter John Bloecher, 87, Orleans, died early Saturday at his residence.
He was born Sept. 4, 1920, in Chicago, to Peter J. and Anna Veronica Lowry Bloecher. He married the former Norma Gail Andrews in 1943, and she preceded him in death on Sept. 30, 1978.
He was retired from Essex International as a tool and die maker, a machinist and foreman. He worked for a total of 38 years at the same location, which was the former Trav-Ler Radio, Admiral, United Technologies, and finally Essex in Orleans.
He is survived by three sons, Michael Thomas Bloecher of Los Angeles, Calif., Mark Owen Bloecher and Peter David Bloecher and wife Debby, all of Orleans; one daughter, Barbara G. Bloecher of Louisville, Ky.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and one sister, Geraldine Bloecher Friedman.

Born Jan. 16, 1958, in Bedford, he was the son of Robert and Barbara (Rogers) Houtchings. He married Yolanda “Loni” Wheeler on July 7, 1999, in Gatlinburg, Tenn., and she survives.
He was a truck driver with Shelby Trucking in Mitchell. He was a member of the Indiana National Guard for 16 years.
Surviving with his wife, Yolanda “Loni” Houtchings of Mitchell; are his parents, Robert and Barbara Houtchings of Mitchell; one daughter, Tessa Zehr and husband Matt of Dubois; one stepdaugher, Nikita Massey and husband Keith of Wisconsin; one stepson, Dustin Brown of Virginia; one sister, Cathy Shields of Mitchell; and four grandchildren, Chase and Zhyla Zehr, and Dayson and Keyson Massery.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, M.G. “Buck” and Charlotte Houtchings, Ernest Rogers, Janie Smith and husband John Smith.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Cresthaven Funeral Home in Bedford. Burial will follow at Cresthaven Memory Gardens with military rites by American Post No. 33 in Bedford.

Odell ‘Sharkey’ Fleetwood

Odell “Sharkey” Fleetwood, 92, of Bedford, died at 12:15 a.m. on Thursday at the Bedford Regional Medical Center.
Born May 21, 1915, in Jackson County, he was the son of James and Isis Fleetwood. He married Mary A. Day on Dec. 24, 1942. She preceded him in death on Aug. 11, 1998.
He retired as a supervisor at NSWC CRANE and a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during World War II. He was a graduate of Bedford High School Class of 1936, a member of the Free Methodist Church in Bedford, the Gillen Post No. 33 American Legion in Bedford and the Bedford Masonic Lodge No. 14 F&AM where he had received his 50-year pin. He was an avid golfer.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews, a sister-in-law and his special friend, Irene Piper of Bedford.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary Alice; one sister, Norma Koehler; three brothers, John O. Fleetwood, James (in infancy) and Otis Fleetwood (as a toddler).
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Saturday from the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Pastor Dave Colgan and Pastor Reed Beard officiating. Entombment will follow in Cresthaven Memory Gardens. Military rites will be accorded at the graveside by members of Gillen Post No. 33 American Legion.
