May 31, 2017 Erma Mae Lowery-Dye Sept. 16, 1942 — May 26, 2017 Erma Mae (Schulenburg) Lowery-Dye, 74, of Bedford, passed away on Friday, May 26, 2017, at her residence surrounded by her family. Born Sept. 16, 1942, in Tipton, she was the daughter of Howard John George and Helen Rose (Huffmeyer) Schulenburg. She married John Lowery on June 6, 1966, and he preceded her in death on Dec. 28, 1986. She married Bart Dye, and he preceded her in death on June 29, 2013. She was a graduate of Tipton High School, Class of 1960. She attended Valparaiso University, then Indiana State University where she earned her Master’s Degree. Erma worked at North Lawrence Community Schools, where she retired after 33 years. She had previously worked at Mitchell Schools. She was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church and the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League. She was also a member of the local card club. Surviving are two children, Kara (Ty) Mathews and Nathan (Sara) Lowery; six grandchildren, Keagan, Kyndall and Knox Mathews, Sarah and John Lowery and Gabriel Dixon; two brothers, Herman (Lisa) Schulenburg and Delbert (Cathy) Schulenburg; nieces and nephews, Chad (Jeryl), Dwayne, Katy, Callie and Scott Schulenburg; stepsons, John Richard Dye and Bret Dye; and stepgrandchildren, Gabrielle, Danielle and Michaili Dye. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John, husband, Bart; and brother, Elbert. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.fergusonlee.com. Larry S. Shaver March 14, 1943 — May 29, 2017 Larry S. Shaver, 74, of Bedford, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, May 29, 2017. Born March 14, 1943, in Bedford, he was the son of James E. and Rachael H. (Houston) Shaver. He married Carolyn (Lone) Shaver on July 27, 1974, and she survives. He graduated in 1961 from Bedford High School, studied at Indiana University and the University of Virginia, and graduated from the 118th Session of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Va. A Vietnam-era veteran, he served in the communications intelligence branch of the U.S. Air Force from 1962-1966, including Foreign Service in Japan. He was a life member of Gillen Post No. 33 of the American Legion, where he served two terms as commander and was a life member and past president of Stone City Lodge No. 94 of the Fraternal Order of Police. He retired from the Bedford Police Department in 1987 after a 21-year career where he served as patrolman, sergeant, lieutenant, detective captain, assistant to the police chief, and chief of detectives. He retired in 2013 following a 25-year career with Indiana University where he served as the associate director of risk management. Larry was concluding his four-year term as a member of the Board of Grand Trustees of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, which he was installed at during the 149th Grand Lodge National Convention in July 2013. With a national membership of approximately 900,000 Elks, there are only eight Grand Trustees, one from each of the eight geographical areas of the national Elks organization. Initiated in 1967 as a member of Bedford Elks Lodge No. 826, Larry completed over 50 continuous years of Elks membership including serving as State President in 2004-2005. In 2014, he was named both a Sagamore of the Wabash and a Kentucky Colonel by the Indiana and Kentucky Governor’s respectively. In addition to his wife, Carolyn, he is survived by daughter, Diane (Boyd) Utz and her husband Randy; son, Steve Adams and David Sipes; grandsons, Riley Grauer, Alex Adams, Logan Utz, and Avery Adams; nieces Teresa Sulenos and Beth Sullivan-Jawitz and her husband Jay; and great-nephew Ryan Sullivan. Terry Blackwood March 15, 1945 — May 22, 2017 Terry was born on March 15, 1945, in the small town of Rochester, to the late Reverend Grant and Doris Blackwood. Early in his life he showed a lot of leadership and was voted Vice President of the Junior Class and later President of his Senior Class. Terry was very talented in the performing arts and was a member of the Madrigals singing group and was a thespian in the drama club. He was the lead in Brigadoon and the tin man in The Wizard of Oz. Terry and his best friend at that time, Jerry Smith, formed a rock and roll band called The Continentals. They used Jerry’s Father’s Lincoln convertible as a backdrop for their publications and were all dressed in sharkskin jackets. They played all the local spots, even the Elks Club and made a record that sold out in Bedford. Terry graduated from Indiana University with a degree in Business Administration and became a very successful executive with the Wall Street Journal. He was in charge of advertising for the Barron’s business publication. He married his high school sweetheart, Brenda Smith, and had two very successful sons, Jonathan Grant and Marcus Grant. Terry is survived by his two sisters, Joetta Duncan of Palm Springs, Calif., and Barbara Reynolds of Brandenburg, Ky.; two sons, Jonathan Grant Blackwood, daughter-in-law, Erin Blackwood and granddaughter, Emily Blackwood of Johns Creek, Ga., and Marcus Grant Blackwood of Sandy Springs, Ga. Thelma Lucille Slaughter Nov. 22, 1925 — May 24, 2017 Thelma Lucille Slaughter, 91, of Ocala, Fla., went to be with her Lord on Wednesday, May 24, 2017. Lucille was born in Mitchell and moved to the Ocala area in 1979. She married Roscoe Slaughter on Nov. 11, 1945, and he preceded her in death on Oct. 22, 1995. She retired from RCA Television Division as an assembler. Lucille was a member of South Ocala Baptist Church and enjoyed singing in the choir. Harmon, 92, of Orleans, passed away at 4:45 p.m. on May 22, 2017, at IU Health Bedford Hospital. He was born on Nov. 10, 1924, in West Baden Springs, the son of R. Bruce and Stella (Ferguson) Harmon. He grew up on a very small farm in rural West Baden with a brother, Bob and a sister Billie. He attended a one-room elementary school known as “No. 2” at Briner Springs. He graduated from West Baden High School in 1942, and Northern Illinois College of Optometry in 1950. He enlisted in the Coast Guard at age 18 during World War II, serving on a large LST that participated in the invasions of Okinawa and Iwo Jima. After the war, he returned home expecting to resume farming with his father, Bruce, but his mother, Stella suggested that he accompany her to an eye care appointment in Jasper. The optometrist very kindly explained the various aspects of his profession, kindling in the young serviceman an ambition to attend college with the goal of becoming an optometrist. James attended IU, enrolling in 1946. He married Madalyn Marshall on September 26, 1948, and they moved to Chicago after his acceptance to Northern Illinois College of Optometry in 1948, graduating in 1950. Upon graduation, the couple returned to Orange County, settling in Orleans and opening a private practice at the corner of Maple and Jefferson St. where James practiced from 1951 to 2007, retiring at age 82. He was president of the Indiana Optometric Association in 1963 and was honored as State Optometrist of the year in 1973. Dr. Harmon participated in many V.O.S.H. missions, to provide free eye care services to residents of Haiti, Dominican Republic, Honduras, Guatemala and The Philippines. James was an avid pilot and a member of the Orleans Flying Club. He and Madalyn made one memorable flight to visit his uncle in Idaho. He constructed a home built airplane with a dear, departed friend, Doyle McIntosh, ultimately getting the plane airborne. He was a very caring father and grandfather who will be missed by his loving family. He is survived by his wife, Madalyn of Orleans; one son, Eric Harmon (Dee Ann) of Paoli; three daughters, Lana Beers of Carmel, Dina Case of Ocala, Fla., and Nanette Boone (Joe) of Campton, Ky.; 10 grandchildren, Sam, Dan, Liza, Lorrie, Michael, Meghann, Mia, Lauren, Jeff and Carrie; 18 great-grandchildren including a new one born the day after his death; and one sister, Billie (Harmon) McIver of LaGrange, Ga. He was a long-time member of All Souls Unitarian Church. He and Sue traveled the country especially loving the backroads. Charlie was a skilled craftsman who could build, make or fix anything that required a tool. He was well known and loved for his quick wit, sense of humor and (good natured) practical jokes. Born in Martin County, he was the oldest child of Edgar Ward Harp and Mary May (Baker) Harp. George served in the U.S. Air Force and was discharged in 1953 as a Staff Sergeant. While in the military, he met Jane Helen Carlson. The two were wed in Seguin, Texas, on January 27, 1950. Buck and Jane raised their four children in Kirksville; later they moved to Williams and then to East Oolitic in their retirement. George worked for the Sarkes Tarzian company, after which he turned to carpentry. As a carpenter and millwright, he worked on many notable building projects, including the construction of IU’s Assembly Hall, Ballantine Hall, Metz Carillon, and Bloomington High School South. He worked for Weddle Brothers and F. A. Wilhelm, among other companies. He retired from the maintenance department of Central Foundry in 1993. Buck attended the Englewood Baptist Church and was a member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and General Motors Retirees. He is survived by his loving wife of over 67 years, Jane Harp; daughters Peggy Hillenburg (Dennis) of Stanford and Terri Harp of East Oolitic; sons Don Harp (Richard Lewis) and Tim Harp of Bloomington; grandchildren Denise, Devin, Patrick, Cheyenna and Hanna; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Sorrells June 12, 1937 — May 7, 2017 Daniel E. Sorrells, 79, of Bedford, died peacefully on Sunday, May 7, at StoneBridge Health Campus. Dan was born June 12, 1937, in Lawrence County to James and Nellie (Atchison) Sorrells. Upon graduation from Huron High School in 1955, Dan became a welder at Carpenter Body Works in Mitchell. In 1958, Dan began enthusiastically serving his country by enlisting in the Army. He was called to Active Duty Training in Fort Knox, Ky., where he was trained in an armored division and earned special recognition as a rifle sharpshooter. Dan continued to serve honorably for the next 26 years and ascended through the military ranks until his retirement as a Lt. Colonel from the Indiana Army National Guard. Throughout his years of service, Dan mentored many young men and women in their training at Camp Atterbury and other military installations. Dan’s leadership skills also served his community through the service organization, La-Or-Ma Shrine Club, where he was a past president. He could be counted on to participate in local events such as parade units and other functions in order to raise money for young people and their needs in this community. He was a 50-year member of the Mitchell Masonic Lodge No. 228 and the Murat Temple, Indianapolis. Dan worked as a Supervisory Equipment Specialist and Manager of the Equipment Management Office of Crane Army Ammunition Activity at Crane. Upon retirement from Crane, he enjoyed bluegrass music, riding his motorcycle, and playing his banjo. Most of all, he enjoyed his time with family and friends. He attended the Restoration Church of the Nazarene, Bedford. Dan’s life was filled with loving and supporting contributions and guidance to the lives of his family and friends. He was an officer and a gentleman who could be depended upon to give selflessly of his time and talents to those who were fortunate to be associated with him. His clever sense of humor and wit brightened any room during times of celebration as well as cushioning times of strife. Edgar D. ‘Buddy’ Walters July 24, 1938 — May 7, 2017 Edgar Denny Walters, also known as “Buddy”, passed away on Sunday May 7, 2017, at 12:15 a.m. at IU Health Bloomington Hospital. He was born in Bedford on July 24, 1938, to Ralph and Maggie (Breedlove) Walters. He married Ruth Walters in Bedford and they would have celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary on Oct. 20. Edgar graduated from Shawswick High School in 1956. He served in the U.S. Army during the Cuban Missile Crisis and was stationed in the Florida Keys; it was during this time that he was privileged to meet President John F. Kennedy. Edgar worked as a service representative for Indiana Gas and then Vectren Energy retiring after 29 years of service. Edgar was a major basketball fan and coached at the Boys Club for 22 years. He was affectionately known as the man with a Coke and a smile. He loved to joke and had a wonderful sense of humor. Survivors include his wife Ruth Walters; one son, Brett (Sabrina) Walters; one granddaughter, Nikki (Travis) Calovich; two great-grandsons, Cruise and Ryker Calovich; and one brother, Noah Walters. Lee Jan. 29, 1921 — May 5, 2017 Robert Merrill Lee, 96, of Bedford died peacefully on May 5, 2017, surrounded by his loving family. Bob (nicknamed “Bop” by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren) was born Jan. 29, 1921, in Bedford, the eldest child to Robert and Ruby (Wicker) Lee. A bright and precocious child, he survived difficult years during the Depression, but lived great adventures as a young man in Bedford. He graduated from Bedford High School in 1938, and then attended Hanover College, where his passion and skill for sports earned him two letters in baseball and three letters in football. He was also a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, where he earned the well-deserved nickname, “Cocky Lee.” Bob was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army as a medic for 38 months in Africa, Sicily, and Italy. After the war, he returned to Hanover College where he met Janet Marie Day of St. Louis, Mo. They were married in 1947 and he earned his BA degree in 1948. Bob went on to earn his master’s degree in Education from Indiana University. His first teaching and coaching job was in New Castle, from 1949-1953, where he was the head track coach, assistant basketball, and assistant football coach. Bob returned to Bedford in 1958 to teach and coach at Bedford High School and Lincoln Grade School. In his 25 years in education, he taught U.S. History, Russian History, and Physical Education, and coached football, track, freshman and B team basketball, boys golf (19 years), and girls golf (3 years). Nine of his golf teams played in state championship tournaments. Bob was elected to the IHSAA Golf Hall of Fame in 2006 for his service and accomplishments. He also coached Babe Ruth baseball in Bedford, and led his team to win two championships. Bob made quite an impression on the students he taught and athletes he coached, many of whom have kept in close touch with him throughout their lives. He served on the Board of Directors of the Bedford Boys Club for 33 years, and received the following awards for his service: 1. The Man and Boy Award 2. The Bronze Key Award 3. The Ron Smith Award. Bob is survived by his beloved wife of 69 years, Janet; his children, Dinah Cox and her husband Dave of Bedford, son, Robert Lee of Mesa, Ariz., and daughter, Nancy Peabody and her husband Royce of Bedford; his grandchildren, Cara English and her husband Charles of Phoenix, Ariz., Lindsey Madden and her husband Michael of Galway, Ireland, Steffanie Peabody and her husband Nate of Indianapolis, and Royce (RP) Peabody and his wife Dana of Bedford; and his great-grandchildren, Liam English of Phoenix, Ariz., Odhran and Emmett Madden of Galway, Ireland, and RJ and Max Peabody of Bedford. He is also survived by sister, Anne Rittmeyer of Bedford, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his niece Peggy Jackson; his brothers-in-law, Jack Powell and Paul Rittmeyer; his daughter-in-law, Jo Ellen Lee; his great-grandson, Herschel Jackson Boram; and his sister, Jean Powell. Bob had a lifetime love for all sports. On retirement to Arizona, he was an active and popular tennis player. He and his wife spent 18 winters at the Viewpoint Golf and Tennis Resort in Mesa, Ariz., where he inspired many younger residents with his grit, humor, and active lifestyle, playing tennis and lifting weights well into his 90’s. He was beloved by the community and was known by many as “The General” and “Coach.” In 2016, Bob traveled to Washington, D.C., with the Indy Honor Flight. He spent his professional career as a bulldozer operator at Indiana Limestone for 44 years. Navy veteran of World War II, and served from 1941-1945. Born Oct. 27, 1922, in Shelby County, she was the sixth child of Lora “Pap” and Vivien (Mobley) Jolliff. In 1928, her family settled in Mitchell. She and her first husband, Claude “Dick” Bryan Brooks, were married June 25, 1945. This marriage blessed her with three children. She joined Ralph Holler in marriage, Oct. 8, 1968. Together they participated in Carpenter bus distribution over much of the country. At the closing of Carpenters they moved to “junk” merchandise distribution attending flea markets, festivals, and met many folks in their travels. Janice (Hutton) Inman July 26, 1932 — Feb. 1, 2017 Janice Hutton Inman, 84, of Avon, died Feb. 1, 2017. She was the ninth child born to Fred and Maggie (Drehobl) Hutton in Bedford. She married John Inman of Odon, who preceded her in death in 1985. They were the parents of Jeffrey Inman, who survives, and Jerelyn Inman, who died in 1996. Also surviving are grandsons, Michael and David Inman. Janice was a secretary who worked at the Crane Naval Warfare Center, Allison, the IRS, and the FAA. She worked at Avon Schools for 26 years and was a secretary to the superintendent of schools for 17 of those years. After retirement, Janice wrote a book titled “The Heartbeat of Hendricks Community — Our Hospital,” a compilation of interviews with 80 hospital associates. All proceeds from the sale of this book were donated to the hospital. Janice and her late sister, Leona Jane Hutton Whittaker, then co-wrote a book titled “Hutton Memories.” Janice was a member of St. Malachy Catholic Church in Brownsburg, the hospital Auxiliary Guild and Cancer Support Group, and the American Cancer Society Reach to Recovery program. Root Sr., 81, of Shelbyville, formerly of Spencer and Bedford, passed away Sunday, April 30, 2017 at Homeview Nursing Home in Franklin. He was born Nov. 28, 1935, in Lawrence County to Floy Arthur and Liberty Louise (Calloway) Root. Jim served in the United States Air Force Reserves. Jim worked as a reporter for the Herald-Times and the Bedford Times-Mail. He was a reporter and sports announcer for WBIW radio in Bedford. He also served as a minister for Solsberry Christian Church for eight years, then Spencer Christian Church for 24 years, as well as pastored part time for several small churches. He was a member of Fairland Christian Church. James is survived by his wife of 59 years, Phyllis (Manzenberger) Root; children, Faith Parker (Gary), Krista Bowlby (Michael), James P. Root II (Lisa Munsey), and Leah Root; and nine grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Forrest Root.
