May 31, 2015 Arthur M. Black

Aug. 12, 1928 — May 22, 2015

Arthur M. Black, 86, of Bedford, passed away May 22.

Born Aug. 12, 1928, in St. Louis, he was the only son of Pauleen Moody and Arthur Merrell Black Sr. At the early age of 14, Art began working on his own in New York, Chicago and later in eastern California.

He served in the Navy during World War II.

In California, Art met many famous people, like Frank Sinatra, while working at high-class restaurants and in hotel service. He also had his own cleaning and restoration service. He enjoyed life in Dana Point, Calif., surfing and riding his motorcycle.

In 1977, at the age of 49, he moved to Bedford after reading a magazine article that said southern Indiana was the place to live and retire with comfortable living at lower costs. While living in Bedford, Art started a cab service, sold insurance and worked in real estate.

Art retired at an early age to a quiet place by White River. He enjoyed reading books and staying abreast of current issues from magazines, TV, radio and later on the computer. Dating back from his restaurant days, he enjoyed shopping for and eating fine cuisine. He enjoyed lively debates and was outspoken.

Art is survived by his former wife, Josephine Black of Costa Mesa, Calif; their son, Andrew and wife Kelly of Grimes, Iowa; and their daughters, Angela and Emily.

Art requested cremation with no service. His son will be taking his ashes to Dana Point, Calif., where Art enjoyed riding his motorcycle and life the most.

Kai Yin 'Dennis' Cheng

Jan. 16, 1960 — May 28, 2015

Kai Yin “Dennis” Cheng, age 55, of Bedford, passed away peacefully at his mother’s home on May 28, 2015. The Cheng family came to the U.S in 1974. He graduated from Bloomington High School South. He worked for Irish Lion restaurant in Bloomington as manager since 2001.

He was preceded in death by his father, Chuen Cheng. He is survived by his mother, Wen Cheng; his sister, Sarah Cheng; older brother, Brian and his wife, Lucy; nephew Derek of MO; his younger brother Johnny and his wife Rose; and two children, Brandon and Belinda of CA.

James R. Burton

Nov. 8, 1937 — May 27, 2015

James R Burton, 77, passed away Wednesday at Lenoir Woods, in Columbia, Mo.

Visitation will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Memorial Funeral Home, with funeral service to follow at 11 a.m.

Jim was born Nov. 8, 1937, at Huron, Indiana, to Willard and Pauline Burton. He attended Huron Schools and graduated in 1956. Active in sports, he played basketball all four years of high school. Before enrolling at Indiana State University he married the love of his life, Judith Ann Hayes on Aug. 31, 1956.

They moved to Terre Haute, where Jim studied at the university for more than three years before taking a job with Seaboard Finance Company. During his time with Seaboard, he worked in Indiana offices in North Vernon, Madison, Goshen and Bedford, where he was hired by Credit Bureaus of Kentuckiana to manage the Bedford Bureau.

After eight years at the Bureau, it was time to move on. Jim moved his family to Columbia on Oct. 1, 1970, where he purchased Central Missouri Adjustment Service. The name was changed to Certified Collections and through many trials and tribulations, Jim and Judy grew the business for 25 years. On Sept, 31, 1995, Certified Collections was sold to R. C. Wilson Company from St. Charles, Mo. After retiring, they spent the next 12 years traveling in their motor home, covering most states and a couple of Canadian provinces before health issues began to slow them down.

While active in business, Jim was a member of the Cosmo Luncheon Club for a number of years. He also served on the board of directors for Associated Credit Bureaus of Indiana, Indiana Collectors Association and 24 years on the Missouri Collectors Association board.

He was a die-hard fan of the Missouri basketball and football, and of Cardinals baseball. Jim enjoyed taking care of his yard, acrylic painting and liked to camp every now and then.

Jim is survived by his two sons, James II of Columbia and Jay Alan of Shell Knob, Mo. He was preceded in death by daughter, Jill Ann Hansen, and his wife of 56 years, Judith Ann "Judy" Burton.

Miriam E. “M” King, 75, passed away at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at her residence.

Born Feb. 16, 1940, in Lawrenceport, she was the daughter of Benjamin F. and Lena L. (Jones) Reynolds. She married Harrison G. King June 15, 1956, and he preceded her in death June 6, 2008.

Miriam was of the Christian faith, and had been employed at RCA, Crane and Dana Corporation. She and her husband were farmers and she enjoyed mowing the lawn and woodworking.

She was a 4-H Leader for the Bryantsville Live Wires and a band parent.

Surviving are her daughter, Charlotte LeAnn Waltz and husband Kent of Norman; granddaughter, Stephanie Waltz Fansler and husband J.W. of West Lafayette; great-granddaughter, Joanna Grace Fansler; beloved niece, Kelly Reynolds French of Lebanon; and brothers, Robert P. Reynolds and wife Carol of Spencer, Roger A. Reynolds and wife Colleen of Amsterdam, N.Y. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews who visited her at home.

Her parents; husband; infant son, Michael Bryan King; sisters, Loretta Douglas and Nancy Jane Reynolds; and several nieces, nephews, and other family members preceded her in death.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center. Burial will be in Lawrenceport Cemetery.

Tressa Carter

Dec. 20, 1926 — May 27, 2015

Tressa Carter, 88, of Oolitic, passed away at 8:24 p.m. on Wednesday at White River Lodge in Bedford.

She was born in Oolitic on Dec. 20, 1926, to Frank and Sophie (Paledino) Bellush. She was a graduate of Oolitic High School and was retired from NWSC Crane after 25 years of service. She married William C. Carter and he preceded her in death. Tressa was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Bedford.

Surviving is one son, Greg Carter of Bedford and one grandson, Matt Carter of Oolitic.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Steve Carter; one brother, Frank Bellush Jr.; three sisters, Mary Catherine Zuttarelli, Josephine Bellush, and Mary Ruth Bundy.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Monday at Cresthaven Funeral Home with Deacon Dave Reising officiating. Burial will follow in Cresthaven Memory Gardens.

Barbara J. Little, 70, Bedford, passed away at 11:40 a.m. on Monday at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital.

She was born in Lawrence County on March 28, 1945, to Paterson and Anna (Cummings) Murphy; she was a graduate of Shawswick High School in 1963 and IVY Tech Community College in 1973. Barbara married M.C. Sam Little on Aug. 27, 1965, in Lawrenceville, Ill., and he preceded her in death on Oct. 16, 2005.

She was a LPN at Dunn Memorial Hospital in Bedford.

Barbara was a member of the Erie United Methodist Church in Bedford.

Survivors include two daughters, Robin (Jerry) Saunders of Springville and Ricci (Dr. Steve) Medlock of Bloomington; one son, Larry (Sharon) Brunt of Oolitic; one brother, Larry (Betty) Murphy of Columbus; two sisters, Margie Hamilton of Bedford and Wilma Fordyce of Pennsylvania; and several much loved grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; four brothers, Merlin, Harold and Fred Murphy, and Charles Murphy in infancy.

Celebration of life will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Erie United Methodist Church with Pastor John Meunier officiating. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church.

Vera Allen, 86, of Bedford, went to be with the Lord at 2:56 a.m. on Tuesday at Indiana University Health Bedford Hospital.

Born Feb. 5, 1929, in Los Angeles County, Calif., she was the daughter of Arthur Camacho and Helen (Espinosa De Los Monteros) Newman.

She was a homemaker and loved dancing and music.

Survivors include three sons, Alfred Allen and wife Sally of Sacramento, Calif., Arthur Allen of Bloomington and Robert Allen and wife Rhonda of Oolitic; a daughter, Cindy Allen Wallace and husband James of Portland, Texas; grandchildren, Andrea Allen, Brian Allen, Christopher Allen and wife Tasia, Tiffany Luker and husband Brandon, Nichole Littrell and husband Bryan and Jeremiah Wallace; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Helen Sarkissan; and a brother, Arthur Camacho.

Edna L. Swigler

Aug. 18, 1919 — May 25, 2015

Edna Lucille Arnold Swigler, 95, of Bedford, died at 12:29 a.m. on Monday at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital.

Born Aug. 18, 1919, in Mitchell, she was the daughter of Vernon and Eva (Carroll) Arnold. She married Edward C. Swigler on April 15, 1939, and he preceded her in death on Jan. 19, 2011, after 71 years of marriage.

She was a manager for the Diana Shop in Bloomington and a member of the Englewood Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Larry Michael Swigler and wife Loretta, of Crane; a daughter, Peggy Dorsett of Bedford; eight grandchildren, Sherre Zink of Bedford, Carole Cummings, Billie Tumey, Randy Dorsett and John Swigler, all of Bedford, Larry Swigler of Crane, Laura Lawson of Bloomington and Kirstin Stickney and husband Jason of Carmel; 15 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a brother, John Arnold and a sister, Doris Pierce, both of Bedford.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a granddaughter, Tammy Hurley; three brothers, Robert, Frank and Dale Arnold; two sisters, Judith Anne Arnold and Juanita Callahan.

Graveside service will be at 3 p.m. on Thursday at Dive Cemetery with the Rev. David Ferry officiating. Burial will follow. Visitation will be from 12:30-2:30 p.m. on Thursday at the Day & Carter Mortuary.

Thomas George "Woody" Woodward has lost his courageous seven year battle against cancer. He was 69 years old.

Tom was born to Burl and Lena (Ross) Woodward on Jan. 11, 1946, in Bedford, and graduated from Bedford High School in 1964. He attended Indiana State University, and was a Vietnam Veteran serving in the United States Army from October 1967 to September 1969.

He married Susan Walker on Jan.17, 1972, and he would agree that was one of the best decisions he ever made. Susie was devoted to him and stood by him in sickness and in health, until the very end.

Tom worked for General Motors for 30 years. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 33, as well as the Knights of Columbus. St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church was his place of worship. Tommy believed “Life is Good,” and his positive spirit was inspirational to all who knew him. He was an avid golfer and loved to fish.

In addition to his wife of 43 years, he is survived by his parents; brothers, John (Libby) Woodward of Virginia Beach, Va., and David (Jane) Woodward of Bedford; sister and brothers-in-law, Teresa (Bruce) Cate of West, Texas, and Beverly (Dick) Davis of Bloomington. His children, Michelle Woodward West and Jason Woodward, both of Bedford, were his pride and joy. Michelle and husband, D.J. West blessed him with three grandchildren, Karoline, Katherine and Karter, who enriched his life every day.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Tom’s honor to either the Boys and Girls Club of Lawrence County or St. Vincent de Paul School Athletic Department. To all who knew him, life won’t nearly be as good without him. He was deeply loved and will be greatly missed.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Bedford, with Fr. Rick Eldred and Deacon Dave Reising officiating. Burial will be in Cresthaven Memory Gardens.

Patricia A. Coffin

June 26, 1948 — May 22, 2015

Patricia Ann "Patty" Coffin, age 66, died at 8:43 p.m. on Friday at St. Francis Hospital, Indianapolis, surrounded by her loving family following a short illness.

She was born on June 26, 1948, in Bedford, the daughter of James M. Connors and Helen Louise Connors (formerly Ray), who preceded her in death.

Patty was a 1966 graduate of Bedford High School and a 1970 graduate of Indiana University having received a bachelor’s degree in education. She received a master’s degree in education at Indiana University and enjoyed a teaching career for several years. She taught 6th grade at Needmore Elementary School in Needmore, and she taught elementary school in Cloverdale. She taught special reading in the Martinsville School system before pursuing a legal career.

Patty attended Indiana University Indianapolis Law School, graduating in 1990 with a degree of doctor of jurisprudence. She was admitted to practice before the Indiana Supreme Court and the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana. She was a member of the probate and trust section of the Indiana State Bar Association, the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys and the Morgan County Bar Association. She practiced law with her husband and Lisa A. Blackman, whom she loved like a daughter, in the law firm of Coffin, Coffin & Blackman. She was public defender for Morgan County until 1994 when she directed her attention to the field of elder law and disability law.

Patty was the principal owner of Action Title & Escrow, LLC, a title company which commenced operation in 2007. She was proud of the business she had created and maintained, and enjoyed working there with her son-in-law, William Holmberg, as well as, the rest of her committed and loyal staff at both the title company and the law office.

She was a life member of the Women’s Auxiliary of the American Legion Post 230 and a life member of the Women’s Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1257. She was a former member of the board of directors of Desert Rose and a supporter of Planned Parenthood.

She is survived by her husband, Roger T. Coffin, whom she married on June 9, 1973; daughter, Natalie Ann Coffin of Martinsville, daughter, Angela Jean Coffin and husband, William Holmberg; and grandson, Owen Roger Holmberg of Greenwood; sister, Shirley J. Turpin (Connors) and husband Joy Dean Turpin of Heltonville; and brother, James L. Connors, and wife Marie D. Connors of Greenwood.

To say that Patty was an enthusiastic and avid reader would be a profound understatement. She literally devoured several books each week and she very much enjoyed her association with members of a local book club.

Patty loved and admired her daughters and she was very proud of their talents and accomplishments. Patty enjoyed all of the dancing performances given by her daughter, Angela and was very proud that she pursued a teaching career. She admired her daughter Natalie’s creative writing ability and reveled in her many musical talents and performances. Patty was lovingly referred to as “Mae Mae” by her first and only grandson, Owen, whom she adored with abandon. They had a unique and deeply special relationship, and Patty very much enjoyed all of the activities and events she attended with Owen.

Patty was married to the love of her life, Roger. They traveled extensively together, were business partners for over 35 years, and enjoyed to the fullest, every day of their lives. They were best friends. They shared a deep connection throughout their nearly forty-two years of marriage and shared the most precious moments of their lives with each other. They particularly enjoyed fishing together and discussing every detail of their lives.

Patty was the Mother of all Mothers. During her lifetime, she mentored, nurtured, counseled, tutored and cared for many people so they could attain their career and educational goals. Indeed, Patty always loved to unselfishly contribute her talents as a teacher to help anyone who might be struggling.

She enjoyed a great friendship with her very best friend and college roommate, Dinah Smith, and she enjoyed a wonderful friendship with her college friend, Kathy Sides.

During the past several years, Patty greatly enjoyed attending all of the reunions of the soldiers and their wives who were members of Company C, 23rd Medical Battalion in the Republic of South Vietnam.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Neal & Summers Mortuary, 110 East Poston Road, Martinsville with the Rev. Eric Kersey officiating. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 4-8 p.m. on Wednesday and for one hour prior to the funeral service on Thursday. There will be no burial.

Tommy Joe Bartlett, 63, of Smithville, passed away peacefully May 22, 2015, at his residence with his family by his side.

Born December 28, 1951, in Lawrence County, Indiana, he was the son of Richard Earl and Barbara Ann (Sharr) Bartlett.

He was a 1970 graduate of Smithville High School.

A fourth-generation farmer, Tom enjoyed spending time in his John Deere tractors, working the crop and hay fields, feeding cattle, and maintaining the farms. He certainly enjoyed being his own boss.

He was a lifelong farmer, but also worked for the Indiana State Highway Department as a materials inspector for new construction from 1970-77 before returning to work alongside his parents on the family farm. He worked at the Springville Feeder Auction Association from 1998-2012 and served as a member of the Board of Directors there from 2001-09.

Tom cared deeply for his country and his community, and he believed township government was very important. He was elected to serve on the Clear Creek Township Board in 1994 and served until the time of his passing.

He assisted in the creation of the Smithville Area Association, the Redmen Hall Renovation Project, the Smithville Community Center Project and many other projects in the Smithville community.

Tom loved eating good food. He loved spending time with his family and his friends. He had a great sense of humor and liked to joke, laugh and tease. He was a patient man who enjoyed telling and retelling stories. He had a memory like a steel trap and never forgot the name of a person he had met or a road he had traveled on.

Always willing to help someone if he could, he hoped the information gained during his 5½ year battle with colon cancer would someday help doctors find a cure.

Tom is survived by his mother, Barbara A.; his wife of nearly 31 years, Barbara J.; his son Jacob and wife Christine; his son Matthew; and his sister, Trudy Bartlett, all of Smithville. He is also survived by several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father, Richard; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, May 26, 2015, from 4-8 p.m. at The Funeral Chapel of Powell & Deckard, 3000 E. Third St., in Bloomington. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 27, 2015, at The Funeral Chapel with an hour of visitation prior to the service. Rev. Buck Smith will officiate. A graveside service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, his family asks that memorial contributions in Tom’s memory be made to the Clear Creek Township for the Tommy Bartlett Walking Trail in Smithville or the American Cancer Society for colon cancer research.

Allan R. Smith

Allan R. Smith, age 72, of Ellettsville, died Friday afternoon at his residence.

Born November 1, 1942, in Mitchell, Indiana, he was the son of Leroy and Vivian Olive (Taylor) Smith. He was a Bloomington High School graduate, class of 1960 and a U.S. Army National Guard veteran. He retired in 2001 from G.E. in Bloomington, where he was a controlman. He was an avid fisherman and a former member of Hoosier Bassmasters. He also was a member of Burton Woolery American Legion Post #18 in Bloomington and had formerly attended Mitchell Christian Church.

He is survived by his wife, Linda (May) Smith, of Ellettsville; his son and daughter-in-law, Brad and Jennifer Smith, of Greensburg; his daughter and son-in-law, Melanie and C.J. Craig, of Ellettsville; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Donna and Jerry Holtrey, of Cleveland, Ohio, and Kathy and Nelson Shaffer, of Bloomington; one brother and sister-in-law, Marc and Cindy Smith, of Ellettsville, and three grandchildren, Bryce Craig, Benjamin Craig and Bobby Teters. He was preceded in death by his parents.

The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the Deremiah-Frye Mortuary, 700 W. Gourley Pike. Burial will follow in Clear Creek Cemetery. Friends may visit the family on Thursday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Marvin O’Neal Kinser, 76, of Springville, passed away early Thursday morning at his residence.

He was born Aug. 12, 1938, in Harrodsburg to Clayton Kinser and Marie O’Neal Kinser.

Marvin proudly served in the United Sates Army for nine years and was a member of the American Legion Gillen Post 33 in Bedford.

He spent his professional career with Prax-Air in East Chicago, before retirement in 1998.

He and his wife Glenda attended Grace Baptist Church in Springville.

Marvin is survived by his wife, Glenda Kinser, of Springville, to whom he was married to since August of 1990. Marvin also leaves behind his son, Mark Kinser and wife Susan of Moss Bluff, La.; daughter, Ann Marie Mason of Hobart; stepson, Doug Scott and wife, Julie of New Goshen; grandchildren, Zack and Amanda Kinser, Chris, Stephanie, Sue Ann, and Briar Mason, and Katlynn Scott. Also surviving are his brothers, Joe Kinser and wife Ida of Harrodsburg, and Phillip Kinser of Avoca.

He will be sadly missed by all of his family and several dear friends.

Marvin was preceded in death by his parents, first wife Josephine Gumulauski Kinser, and a brother Max Kinser.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Allen Funeral Home and Crematory 4155 South Old State Road 37. Pastor Gerald Flynn will officiate. Burial will follow in the Clover Hill Cemetery.

John R. Payne, 63, of Bedford, passed away at 9:43 p.m. on Wednesday at Indiana University Health Bedford Hospital in Bedford.

He was born in Shepherdsville, Ky., on July 22, 1951, to Anderson and Jenny (Morgan) Payne. John married Brenda K. Smith on Aug. 31, 1974 and she survives.

John attended Washington County schools and was a member of the First Assembly of God Church in Bedford.

Survivors include his wife, Brenda Payne of Bedford; one brother, David Payne; three sisters, Billy Jo, Sharon and Linda Silverthorn.

He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Sunday at Cresthaven Funeral Home, entombment will follow in Cresthaven Memory Gardens

Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home and from noon until the service on Sunday.

Donald Terry, 77, of Bedford, died at 2 a.m. on Thursday at his residence.

Born Jan. 31, 1938, in Lawrence County, he was the son of John Eugene and Blanche (Edwards) Terry. He married Patricia Brooking on July 14, 1956, and she survives.

He retired from Chase Bank and had worked at Extruded Alloy for 22 years.

He was a member of Liberty Baptist Church and enjoyed fishing and woodworking.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia, of Bedford; his mother, Blanche, of Bedford; two sons, Dale Terry and Steve Terry both of Bedford; a granddaughter, Kelsi Terry, of Bedford; two grandsons, Kreg and Darren Terry, both of Bedford; and a brother, Ralph Terry, of Fairbanks, N.C.

He was preceded in death by his father and two brothers, David and Phillip Terry.

Funeral service will be at 4 p.m. on Saturday in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Pastor Kenny Dalton officiating.

Kathy Jo “Kat” Eads, 56, of Bloomington, passed away on Tuesday at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital.

Kathy was born March 13, 1959, in Bloomington and was the daughter of Ronald Leroy “Buck” Shields and Winnie Lois (Mosier) Bowlen.

Kat worked at Indiana University in Human Resources. She was a member of the Am Vets, she volunteered at the Bloomington Speedway where she worked the 50/50 raffle and the Pit Gate.

She loved camping, riding motorcycles, boating, and being outdoors anywhere she could feel like she was free.

Survivors include her husband, Anthony Eads of Bloomington; two sons, Tony Walker (Christie) of Bloomington, and David Brummett (Erin) of Mitchell; mother, Winnie Bowlen of Bloomington; five grandchildren, Abby, Evan, Logan, Maddie, and Caleb; sisters and brother, Debbie Clark (Roger) of Bloomington, Cheryl Abram (Marvin) of Ellettsville, Jeff Shields of Bloomington, and Anita King (Chris) of Bloomington; and stepsister, Angie Fielder (Neil) of Bloomfield.

She was preceded in death by her father; stepfather, Steve “Pops” Bowlen; her grandparents; and several aunts and uncles.

Charlene “Char” M. Hall, 79, Orleans, passed away at 10:15 p.m. on Monday at Indiana University Health & Hospice in Bloomington. Cremation was chosen with no memorial service per her request.

Born in a coal mining camp in Harlan County, Ky., she was the daughter of the late Custer and Susie Cornett. Always proud of her Kentucky roots, she spent her childhood growing up in Detroit, Mich.

She was a member of the Bethel Church in Orleans.

A homemaker she was also employed at Essex Group in Orleans.

Charlene was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed making brownies, fudge and other sweets that she passed out to friends and family. A devoted student of the Bible she took great joy helping anyone with any need.

She enjoyed being a “granny” to her grandchildren and all the children in her life. She enjoyed traveling to the Rocky Mountains of Colorado and coastal Oregon.

She married Wayne Hall in June of 1960 and he survives her as well as two brothers Winslow Cornett and Tom Cornett both of Orleans.

Her caring spirit lives on in her children who survive her, Randy Hall of Orleans, Lee Hall of Orleans, Toby (Amy) Hall of Rockport, Marvin (Tiffany) Hall of Orleans, and Tina (Bob) Parsley of Mitchell.

“Granny” is also survived by her prides and joys, her nine grandchildren, Jon Sanders, David Sanders, Carley Sanders, Molley Parsley, Jake Hall, Jenna Hall, Sadie (Zack) Melton, Madison Hall and Britton Hall.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Rocky Cornett and John Belamour; and sisters, Jean Shelby and Kathleen Cornett.

Virginia Lois Sowders, 72, of Solsberry, passed away Monday at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital.

Born May 13, 1943, in Linton, she was the daughter of Virgil and Mayme (Baker) Ray.

Virginia was retired from RCA in Bloomington and a member of the Solsberry United Methodist Church.

Alta Marie Smith, 75, of Zionsville (formerly of Lebanon and Indianapolis), passed away Sunday.

She was born on Jan. 28, 1940, in Lawrence County, on the farm where she, along with her brothers and sisters, grew up. Her parents were the late Raymond and Laverne (Brown) Mattix.

Alta graduated from Mitchell High School (Class of 1958), and then proudly served her country in the United States Army. Alta began her college career at the age of 42, and graduated from Indiana University with a B.A. degree with a double major in journalism and political science. Long before that, her writing ability made Alta a successful secretary and administrative assistant. She also taught at a private school.

Alta was a talented photographer, and loved using the camera to capture the beauty of the world. She also liked to garden, and loved all types of flowers. But more than anything she loved to worship JESUS! Time spent with her children and grandchildren was especially important to Alta.

Alta is survived by her children, Barbara Baxter (Brian), Michael Smith and Debbie Smith; grandchildren, Joshua Baxter (Anna) and Jessica Willig (Chuck); great-grandchildren, Ben and Elise Baxter, and Ava and Luke Willig; sisters Mary Lou Powell (Mike), Becky Curtis, and Rita Jo Williams (David). She is also survived by her former husband, Irving P. Smith (Lynn). Alta was preceded in death by brothers, Robert Mattix and Jim Mattix.

Service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Flanner and Buchanan-Zionsville, 105 W. Pine St., Zionsville, IN 46077. Burial will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery with military rites.

Martha Elizabeth “Liz” Bever, 80, passed away on Sunday in Denton, Texas, surrounded by her loving family.

Born Oct. 11, 1934, in Shoals, she was the daughter of Kern and Anna (Grabner) Ellis. She married her husband of 54 years and four months, Essell Lloyd Bever Jan. 13, 1961, in Mitchell where she was also raised.

Liz enjoyed reading, quilting, flower gardening, bowling, traveling across the country and the world, and watching her favorite sports teams. She was an avid Notre Dame fan.

Liz also enjoyed Western movies, especially John Wayne films. She was a valued volunteer at the Denton Friends of the Family Thrift Shop for many years.

Surviving are her husband, Essell Lloyd Bever of Denton, Texas; children, Dawne (Bill) Bonds of Denton, Richard Bever, West Hollywood, Calif., and Ann (Patrick) Bever of Dallas, Texas; grandchildren, Kristina Tucker and Tony Bonds; great-grandchildren, Caitlin, Liam, Keenan, Sophia, and Kira Kahney and Starling Bonds; siblings, John Ellis and Joan (Gene) Atchinson of Mitchell and Marilyn Wright of Orinda, California; sister-in-law, Judy Bell; nephews, Michael Ellis, Robert Ellis, Alan Wright and Larry Westberg; and nieces, Katherine Avery, Joy Anderson, Janie Hert, Jamie Chastain, and Laura and Lynn Westberg. She is also survived by many dear friends in Colorado.

John C. Haury

Aug. 24, 1948 — May 16, 2015

John Carroll Haury, 66, of Bedford and Bloomington, died in Bloomington on Saturday shortly after playing tennis with friends. He received prompt medical attention but was unable to be revived.

Haury was an attorney in Bedford for 40 years. He practiced law in eight firms bearing his name, most recently (since 2009), at Haury Law Office.

John graduated from Shortridge High School in Indianapolis in 1966. He received his B.A. from Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn., in 1970, and his J. D. (cum laude) from Indiana University, Bloomington in 1975.

John began his legal career in Bedford in 1975 as Lawrence County Chief Deputy Prosecuting Attorney, and as attorney at Robbins and Haury. He served as chief deputy until 1978.

He was appointed Chief Public Defender of Lawrence County on March 23, 2015.

John received bar admissions from the State of Indiana, and U.S. District Court, Southern District of Indiana, both in 1975. He held certification as Indiana Civil and Family Law Mediator from 2003 to the present.

Haury was Past President and Secretary of the Lawrence County Bar Association, and member of the Indiana State Bar Association.

For more than 25 years, John was a Lawrence County Public Defender and an attorney for the Lawrence County Department of Child Services. He served on the board of directors of Legal Services Organization of Indiana, Bloomington Hospital Foundation, and Center for Behavioral Health.

John was former president of Bedford Rotary Club, and member of the board of directors of Leukemia Society of Indiana, and member of Lawrence County Sheriff’s Merit Board.

As attorney, public servant, and advisor of family and friends, John Haury was both advocate and adversary. He listened to positions he did not hold as carefully and critically as he argued for positions he did hold. Whether as advocate or adversary, he sought truth and justice.

John is survived by his wife Lee Ann; and children Amanda Haury of Baltimore, Md., Jonas Haury (Aubrey) of Indianapolis, and Sam Haury (Emily) of Boulder, Colo. Jan Atkins was his longtime friend and office manager.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bloomington Hospital Foundation, or a charity of the donor’s choice.

John David Wilcoxen, 51, of Bedford, died at 12:32 a.m. Saturday at Indiana University Health, Indianapolis.

Born May 29, 1963, in Bedford, he was the son of Gerald Wilcoxen and Olive (Kern) Wilcoxen. He married Lisa Crane on July 4, 1992, and she survives.

John had many factory jobs, last working at Otis Elevator, Bloomington. He was a member of Oolitic Methodist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Lisa Wilcoxen of Bedford; two sisters, Mary (Gordon) Canada of Bedford and Paulette (Jack) Flynn of Bloomington; two half brothers, Tommy and George Wilcoxen, both of Colorado; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Gerald “Jerry” and Arthur “Bud” Wilcoxen.

Anna Snyder, 92, of Bloomington, passed away on Thursday, May 14, 2015 at Golden Living Center. Anna was born August 15, 1922, in Ukraine, to the late Michael and Maria (Dezevorniak) Esopenko.

Anna worked as an office manager for the Ruth Lake Country Club in Hinsdale, IL and later the Midlothian Country Club in Chicago, IL and then for a heating and air service. She was a member of Crossroads Methodist Church in Bloomington.

Survivors include two sons; Patrick Nolan Snyder of Norman, IN, and Michael Ray Murugan of Bloomington; three grandsons; Matthew Snyder, Daniel Snyder (Maya), and Justin Speicher (Ilona), one granddaughter, Nicole Odya, and a great-grandson, Thomas Snyder; along with one brother, William Esopenko (Denise) and their family of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan; and four sisters and their families, Kay Bohach (Bud) of Kelowna, British Columbia, Maria (Kosowan) Leonard of Indianapolis, Jayne Eimers of Canby, MN, and Stephanie Phaneuf of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan;and numerous other relatives.

Anna was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Estel Ray (Mike) Snyder in 1996; son, Dennis Lee Snyder; three brothers, Leon Esopenko, Nickolas Esopenko, and George Esopenko; and sister Aksania Peterson.

She had worked at Montgomery-Ward and was a Licensed Practical Nurse. She was a member of the Pinhook Christian Church, where she played piano and taught Sunday school for many years.

Fred W. Willis, 75, of Norman, went home to be with God on Wednesday at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

Born April 22, 1940, in Percy, Ill., he was the son of Ted and Frieda (Poenitske) Willis. He married Susie Ann Bell and she preceded him in death on Dec. 25, 2010.

He retired as a foreman from General Motors. Fred was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Jana Sue Fisher, 59, of Odon, died at 1:10 p.m. on Tuesday at Monroe Hospital in Bloomington.

Born Nov. 8, 1955, in Bedford, she was the daughter of Herschel and Anita Sue (Bridwell) Ferrell. She married Larry Fisher on Nov. 23, 1977, and he survives.

She retired as a program analyst from NWSC Crane and later worked for SAIC.

Florence M. Childers, 85, of Bedford, died at 8 p.m. on Sunday at Westview ASC Bedford.

Born May 15, 1929, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Henry and Frances M. (Brinegar) Chasteen. She married James Winferd Childers on Jan. 28, 1948, and he preceded her in death on May 4, 1960, as the result of a bulldozer accident.

She was a graduate of Needmore High School with the class of 1947 where she was class secretary. She was a 72-year member of the Hilltop Pentecostal Church and served as the Sunday School Secretary for over 30 years.

She was a cook at Needmore High School from 1967 to 1978. She later worked for Bedford National Bank and Bank One retiring after 15 and a half years. She returned to work part time at Stone City Bank. Her ambition was to compile her own cookbook. She completed and published “Recipes From Many Years” in 2000.

Survivors include five children, Shirley (Joe) Spain of Fultondale, Ala., David (Shirley) Childers of Lehigh Acres, Fla., Carol Sue Franklin of Oolitic, Sherry Childers of Bedford and Jon (Kathy) Childers of Noblesville; eight grandchildren, Nancy Woody Mason, Lenae Spain Simpson, Tangie Franklin Jenkins, Jim Childers, Sandy Franklin Burnette, Tiffany Spain Phillips, Heather Childers Whitaker and Amanda Childers Leahy; 11 great-grandchildren, Jesse and Luke Woody, Brittney Jenkins, Macee and Mylee Burnette, Sam and Will Phillips, Koy and Broc Whitaker, Robbie and Molly Leahy; three step-great-grandchildren, Austin and Dylan Corbin and Danlee Simpson; one step-great-great-granddaughter, Carlie Corbin; and a special nephew who was like one of her own, Shannon Childers of Bedford; a sister, Wilma Charles of Bedford; two sisters-in-law, Marcella (Childers) Pancoast of Flint, Mich., and Neva Childers of Bedford; several nieces and nephews.

Born July 29, 1936, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Charles McMahan and Eva (Patton) McMahan.

She married Norman Taylor in 1950; he died in 1980.

She was a homemaker and member of Christ Temple Pentecostal Church in Bedford.

Surviving are three daughters, Connie (Larry) Neeley, Bonnie Hirtz and Reva Albertson, all of Bedford; and one son, Jackie Taylor, of Michigan; five grandchildren, Nathan, Crystal, Shannon, Melanie and Jacklyn; 11 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Patty Henderson and Mary Hall, both of Bedford, Jolene Fruits of Springville and Judy; and one brother, Ronnie McMahan of California.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one brother, Charles Everett McMahan; and one sister, Bonnie, in infancy.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Patton Hill Cemetery.

Gary Lee Lynch, 68, of Williams, died at 4:10 p.m. on Sunday at his home surrounded by his family.

Born April 13, 1947, in Daviess County, he was the son of Harry and Margie (Qualkenbush) Lynch. He married Bonnie Brock on July 14, 1967, and she survives.

He retired as a welder for Manchester Tank and was a member of the Fayetteville Baptist Church.

He was a member of the Williams Volunteer Fire Dept. and enjoyed flying, traveling with his wife and sitting on his front porch.

He was preceded in death by his dad; and a brother, Phil Lynch.

William Kenneth “Bill” Robbins, 88, of Bloomington went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Saturday at Garden Villa.

Born Oct. 28, 1926, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Edward and Ruth (Hawkins) Robbins. He married Delores (Hesler) Robbins on Nov. 23, 1949.

Bill was retired from Detroit Diesel Allison GM on Dec. 23, 1988, after 38 years of service. Bill was an Army Veteran in WWII. He attended the Harrodsburg Assembly of God.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Delores (Hesler) Robbins; son, Gregory Robbins of Denver, Colo.; daughters, Shirley Jones and husband Charlie of Bloomington and Debra Blasdel and husband Jim O’Malley of Solsberry; grandchildren, Heather Galm and husband Patrick of Ellettsville, Tyler Landis of Worthington, and Sarah Stancombe and husband Steven of Bloomington; and great-grandchildren, Briana and Kelsey Lavender.

Orville H. “Buck” Coulter, 81, of Bedford, died at 1:25 a.m. on Sunday at Indiana University Health Bedford Hospital.

Born Feb. 10, 1934, in Bedford, he was the son of Thomas and Grace (Clendenon) Coulter. He married Hallie Conley on Nov. 22, 1958, and she survives.

He was the owner of Coulter’s Produce, and earlier worked for Lowden Produce. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of the Cecil Martin Post American Legion in Mitchell.

He was an avid raccoon hunter and member of the Leesville Coon Hunter’s Association. He raised English Redtick coon dogs and loved horses.

Survivors include his wife, Hallie, of Bedford; three daughters, Kimberly Coulter, Tamara Coulter and significant other, Travis Kern, and Melissa Coulter Sampson and significant other, Nathaniel Newlin, all of Bedford; two granddaughters, Cortney (Jones) Colson and husband Derrek of Greensburg and Kelsey Sampson of Amarillo, Texas; three great-grandchildren, Chlois York, Nathaniel Colson and Aiden Colson, all of Greensburg; two sisters, Vicky Cooper and husband Barry and Bonita Isom and husband Tracy, all of Bedford; lifelong friend, Gary Goldsby of Bedford; and his dog, Lilly.

Hale L. Hall, 89, Bradenton, Fla., died at 8:15 p.m. on Wednesday at Tidewell Hospice in Bradenton, Fla.

Born May 25, 1925, in Shoals, he was the son of Harley and Sally (Thompson) Hall. He grew up on farms in and around Williams, graduating from Williams school.

He proudly served his country during World War II as a signalman in the U.S. Navy.

He married Jane Richards in September 1948, and they shared 25 happy years together until her death in 1973.

Hale farmed with his father in Williams and later in Fayetteville. His primary career as an accountant culminated with over 20 years at Tropicana Products in Bradenton, Fla. He held a variety of positions with other companies following his retirement from Tropicana and was still employed at BMO Harris Bank in Bradenton in February of this year.

He had been a member of the West Bradenton Baptist Church for the past 40 years.

Hale is survived by his daughter, Elaine Morse and husband Andrew of Atlanta, Ga.; as well as beloved sisters- and brothers-in-law, and nieces and nephews in Indiana.

He was preceded in death by his wife Jane, his parents; and two siblings, Herbert Hall and Ruth (Hall) Reeves.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday at the Day & Carter Mortuary in Bedford. Burial will follow in Cresthaven Memory Gardens.

Born June 19, 1942, he was the son of Luther H. Brown and Ruby (Flinn) Brown. He married Delpha Moore on July 13, 1963, and she survives. He retired from Central Foundry/GM Powertrain in 2004.

Donnie was a hard-working man. He loved farming and taking care of his cows. He was an avid coon hunter. He loved his children and grandchildren, and being involved in their activities. He also loved to travel with his wife, Delpha, especially to the Smokey Mountains.

He was a member of the Pinhook Church of Christ, the United Producers Incorporated, and the U.A.W.

Survivors include his wife, Delpha; one daughter, Crystal Fisher and husband Mark of Leesville; one son, Stacey Brown and wife, Missy of Leesville; grandchildren, Travis and wife Taylor (Pritchett) Fisher, Trista Fisher, Taylor Brown and fiancé Kaitlyn Wesner, Clayton Brown, Dalton Brown; two sisters, Oleta McCart of Bedford, and Connie Scott and husband Joe of Heltonville, three brothers, Jerry Brown and wife Cathy of Leesville, Danny Brown of Leesville, and Terry Brown of Leesville; Aunt, Mildred Brown of Leesville and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was a truck driver and a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Avoca Baptist Church.

Alma June (Benham) Fiddler-McGinnis passed away at 1 p.m. on Saturday surrounded by her family in the comfort of her home.

Mom was born June 7, 1930, in Bedford, to Henry and Cora Benham, the youngest of 10 siblings. She married Walter E. Fiddler on Oct. 9, 1949, and had four daughters, Coralesa, Lezlie, Beverly and Julie.

Our mother was not what you would call an outdoors kind of person, but she loved camping with her Girl Scouts Troop, boating with her family (never getting in the water), and as a young girl spelunking with her brothers and then later with her daughters.

Mom enjoyed working for Dr. Mullin and McGhee and then working for Dr. Goldstein in Decatur. Mom retired from Kalamazoo Opthalmology in Michigan to come back to Decatur, Ill., after Dad died in 1999.

Mom married Jack McGinnis on March 27, 2004. Jack and Mom had 11 wonderful years together. We are so grateful to have Jack in our lives.

Preceeding Mom in death are her parents, her siblings, husband Walter, and her two daughters Lezlie and Julie, who passed away three months apart in 1998.

Mom leaves behind a wonderful legacy of eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two stepdaughters; several nieces and nephews; and a sister-in-law of 70 years.

He was a World War II veteran, having proudly served in Japan. He was a life member and past Commander of the Gillen Post No. 33 of the American Legion in Bedford.

Bill was retired from General Motors and was an avid golfer for 50 years. He was a former coach at the Thornton Memorial Boys Club, and was a loyal IU and Chicago Cubs fan.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Edith Mapes; his first wife, Rhea Dawn; and one son, Doug Mapes.

Surviving are his wife, Patti Mapes of Bedford; one son, Scott (Mary) Mapes of Orleans; one grandchild, Jason Floyd; one brother, Dr. Jack (Hazel) Mapes of Kokomo; one niece, Cindy Mapes; two nephews, John and Jeffrey Mapes; one brother-in-law, Dean Anderson; three stepchildren, Diana Nuchols, Jay Combs and Jamie Sorrells; six stepgrandchildren; and five great-grandsons.

A Celebration of Life will be Thursday at Stonegate Faith Center, 130 M St., Bedford. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., with a memorial service at 2 p.m. Military rites will follow the service at Beech Grove Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, it is requested contributions be made to any of the following: White River Humane Society, White River Lodge or American Legion Post No. 33.

Glen Southern

March 16, 1921 — May 5, 2015

Glen Southern, 94, of Bedford, passed away at 3:40 a.m. on Tuesday at his residence.

He was born in Monroe County on March 16, 1921, to Posey and Lena (Prince) Southern. Glen married Annabelle Zike on Aug. 20, 1966, in Harrodsburg and she survives.

He retired from Indiana University where he was the associate manager of housing, he then went to work at NWSC Crane. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, and he attended Calvary Baptist Church for many years and also attended 39th Street Christian Church in Bedford.

Survivors include his wife, Annabelle Southern of Bedford; three daughters, Carolyn Hawkins of Bedford, Connie (Delbert) Baker of Bedford and Leza (Tod) Corlett of Indianapolis, two sons, David (Debbie) Southern of Heltonville and Sam (Patty) Halle of Merryville, Tenn.; one sister, Velma Bagwell of Bloomington; 10 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Gladys Fleetwood, Thelma Stone, Helen Kinser and Altha Kelley; three brothers, Herschel, Donald and Ansell Southern; two sons-in-law, Michael Hawkins Sr. and Ronnie Collins; and one great-grandson, Jared Michael Hawkins.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. on Friday at Cresthaven Funeral Home with the Rev. Michael Hawkins officiating. Burial will follow in Clover Hill Cemetery in Harrodsburg with military rites by Bedford American Legion Post No. 33.

William “Bill” Edward Babbs, 45, of Bedford, passed away on Monday at St. Vincent Dunn Hospital in Bedford.

Born July 12, 1969, in Bloomington, he was the son of Ronald and Judy (Wampler) Babbs. He married Becky Jones on April 27, 1999; and she survives.

He attended New Hope Community Church. He worked for the City of Bloomington for many years.

Surviving are his wife, Becky Babbs; three daughters, Melissa, Nikki and Wendy; two stepchildren, Amanda and Brandon Smith; nine grandchildren; two brothers, Ronald Eugene (Tracy) Babbs and Josh Babbs; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and very special friends, Tiffany Edwards and Chuck Hancock.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Jenny and Penny; and brother Toby.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at New Hope Community Church with Mike Eads and Jessica Corbin officiating. Burial will be in Dishman Cemetery.

Clifford Wayne Duncan, 61, Mitchell, passed away at 11:33 p.m. Monday at Indiana University Health Bedford Hospital.

Born Sept. 3, 1953, in Buddha, he was the son of Bradley George and Georgia Maxine (Shirley) Duncan.

Clifford worked for many residents in Mitchell.

Surviving are his father, Bradley Duncan of Mitchell; siblings, Charles Leroy Duncan of Mitchell, Rita Gayle Gilstrap of Port Orange, Fla., Mark Alan Duncan of Mitchell and Jennifer Jackson-Duncan of Mitchell; and several nieces and nephews.

His mother; brothers, Bradley Eugene Duncan and Monte Lee Duncan; and sister Sheila Faye Gilstrap preceded him in death.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Haverly Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Carlton Cemetery.

Will Weldon Mathews

Will Weldon Mathews, 72, of Las Cruces, N.M., formerly of Lawrence County, died at his residence on Friday.

Born March 1, 1943, in Indianapolis, he was the son of Russell B. Mathews and Ethela Gail Fields Mathews. He married Gail Jackson on Sept. 14, 1991; and she survives.

He was a graduate of Shawswick High School with the Class of 1961; he held a mechanical engineering degree from GMI and an MBA from Indiana University; he worked for Powertrain (GM) in Bedford; Cummins, in Columbus, and Navistar in Indianapolis; he was a member of University Presbyterian Church, Las Cruces, N.M.; was an avid airplane pilot, belonging to AOPA (Airplane Owners Pilot Association) and Eaa (Experimental Aircraft Assn.); he held 23 U.S. and Foreign patents; and was a National Championship Air Race Winner, twice, in Reno, Nev.

Surviving are his wife Gail Mathews of Las Cruces, N.M.; one daughter, Christine (Tibor) Mathews-Kiss of Manitou Springs, Colo.; grandchildren Victoria and Steven Mathews-Kiss and Harley and MacKenzie Mathews; two sisters, Ada Helen (Gordon) Terry of Oakland, Tenn., and Ann Walden of Brazil; two brothers, Henry “Hank” (Sharon) Mathews of Huron and John (Martha) Mathews of Norman; and numerous nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Will Weldon “Buddy” Mathews III, and Douglas Mathews; grandparents, Henry and Alma (Root) Fields and Will and Lyda (Smith) Mathews; brother-in-law, Lester “Les” Walden; and two sisters-in-law, Sue Mathews and Betty Shahan.

William E. “Ed” Hattabaugh 87, of Medora, passed away at 8:10 p.m. Saturday at the Hoosier Christian Village in Brownstown.

Ed grew up in Washington County. He had attended the Monroe Elementary School and attended high School in Salem. Once he moved to Jackson County, he never left.

He had worked for General Motors in Bedford for over 30 years. While there, he worked as a supervisor. He was a member of the Mount Zion United Methodist Church at Medora.

Born Nov. 23, 1928, he was a son of the late Millard and Mildred (Wheeler) Hattabaugh. On Dec. 27, 1986, he married the former Sue (Cockerham) Pferrer and she survives.

Other survivors include: his children, Billy Dale (Cora) Hattabaugh, Donna Rae Hattabaugh, Marcia Carol Anderson, Betty (Tom) Harding, and Paula Jo (Tom) Hattabaugh-Harmon; stepchildren, Robert Joe Pferrer and Donna Jean (Kevin) Loudermilk; sisters, Juanita Pauline Dunn and Barbara Jean Sill; brother, John Wayne (Hazel) Hattabaugh; 11 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and two stepgrandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons; two sisters; six brothers; one great-grandchild; and one stepson.

William L. Medley, 74, of Williams, formerly of Ellettsville, passed away at 5:35 p.m. on Friday at Indiana University Hospital in Bloomington.

Born on Aug. 17, 1940, in Ellettsville, he was the son of Alice (Swafford) and Ralph E. Medley. He married Rhoda Marie Harp on June 5, 1960, and she survives.

He retired in 2002 from the Smithville Telephone Co. where he was an Installer and Repairman.

He attended the Fayetteville Baptist Church, and was a member of the National Guard.

Surviving are his wife Rhoda Marie, of Williams; two daughters, Tammy Lynn Smith and husband David of Angola and Debra Turner and husband Bobby of Bedford; eight grandchildren, Kenneth, Adam, Amber, Tyler, Ashly, Nickolus, Nethaneal, and Zaria; one great-grandchild, Gracie; one brother, Ralph Medley of Gosport; one sister, Wilma Ward of Georgia; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and seven siblings, Bob, Margaret, Charles, Harold, Donald, Maxine, and Mary.

Frances Cherry

Oct. 16, 1920 — May 1, 2015

After a battle with Alzheimer’s, Frances passed away on Friday, May 1, 2015 at 2:30 p.m. She was 94 years old and born Oct. 16, 1920, in Hendricks Township, Shelby County, Indiana.

Frances was the daughter of the late Paul Blaine and Alice (Kirschbaum) Parker. She married Maurice T. Cherry, on Oct. 29, 1947, who preceded her in death on Oct. 22, 2000.

Her son, William Blaine, also passed away in 2003.

She is survived by her daughter, Peggy Ann Cherry, of Mitchell.

Frances had two sisters, the late Martha L. Corbett of Indianapolis and the late Mary E. Kehrt of Rush County. Also, she had two surviving nephews, Thomas L. Corbett of Brentwood, Tenn., and James A. Corbett of Seaman, Ohio.

Frances was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where she served as deacon, Sunday school teacher, and a Circle leader. She was also a member of Chapter AL, P.E.O. Sisterhood and Shelby County Diligent Diggers Garden Club.

She enjoyed volunteering for a long time at Major Hospital in the Gift Shop. In earlier years, she was active at Senior Services Respite Care Center, American Cancer Society, and Girl Scouts.

Frances graduated from Shelbyville High School in 1938 and attended Business college. Which led her to being a private and legal secretary before her marriage.

Later, she was a homemaker and enjoyed extensive traveling with her family. She loved her family, nature and friends.

Enjoying being outdoors as she did, she was very enthusiastic about helping her husband, physically, in building their first home after marriage. Then later, they continued building two more homes for their growing family.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. on Tuesday at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Mark Morningstar officiating. Interment will be at Forest Hill Cemetery in Shelbyville.

Pearl Deckard, 90, passed away at 7:35 p.m. Friday at Indiana University Health Bedford Hospital.

Born Oct. 11, 1924, in Mitchell, she was the daughter of John Wesley and Edith Viola (Swafford) Thompson. She married Clovis “Beanie” Deckard April 10, 1941, and he preceded her in death Sept. 12, 2000.

Pearl was a homemaker and a member of the Mitchell Senior Citizens and Spice Valley Homemakers Club. She was a member and pianist at Spice Valley Baptist Church and Woodville Baptist Church. She and her husband, “Beanie” entertained at area nursing homes, Spring Mill Inn, Senior Citizens, and various churches throughout the area.

Surviving are daughters, Regina Sorrells of Mitchell, Diana Kay Webb of Orleans, Nedra (Jerry) Hardwick of Bedford, Geni (Steve) Clouse of Palm Coast, Fla., and Marlena (Randy) Swartz of Mitchell; 14 grandchildren;19 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Dortha Cooper of Mitchell.

Her parents; husband; daughter, Kimberly Dorsett; grandson, Anthony Duane Sorrells; sons-in-law, Ronnie Sorrells and Leroy Webb; and siblings, Jasper Thompson, John Thompson, Don Thompson, Homer Thompson, Robert Thompson, James Milton Thompson, Andrew Thompson, and Hazel Thompson, preceded her in death.

Phyllis M. VanUlzen, 80, of Bloomington, passed away April 30, at Garden Villa Nursing Facility in Bloomington.

She was born in Muncie on Feb. 6, 1934, to Benjamin Franklin Hammond and Edna Marie (Vanatter).

Phyllis worked for Scheller Globe in Union City, Ohio, before the factory shut down.

Survivors are one daughter, Susan (Thorn) Damon of Bloomington; three sons, Fred (Brenda) Rhorer of Indianapolis, Clifford (Karen) Rhorer of Oolitic and Mike (Verlina) Rhorer of Bedford; eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Jack (Mary Jane) Hammond of Redkey.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and two sisters, Eula Mae Schrode and Mable Heathly.

She belonged to the Professional Business Women of Muncie, and the Church of the Nazarene.

Patrick Howard “Pat” Brock, 67, of Bloomington, passed away April 30, 2015, at the Owen Valley Health Campus.

Born December 1, 1947, in Bedford, IN, he was the son of the late Harold and Mary Ellen (Howard) Brock.

He graduated from Bedford High School in 1966, and earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Indiana University in 1970.

He served as an Army Reserve Officer in Newport News, VA, then worked as a retail manager or regional sales manager for Atlantic Richfield Oil, Bonded Oil, Radio Shack, and Big Lots.

Survivors include his daughter, Mindy Roadruck of Bloomington; her husband, Sam Roadruck; seven grandchildren, Aleah, Kaleb, Olivia, Noah, Nicholas, Emma and Matthew; his sisters, Ellen “Katie” Giardini of Dover, FL, and Mary Carol Brock of Brandon, FL; nephews, Shawn Brock, James Clark, and Daniel Clark; nieces, Shannon Thalls and Diana Cooper; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

His brother, Michael H. Brock, preceded him in death December 6, 2002.
