May 31, 2013 Lexie Holtsclaw Sr. Jan. 26, 1940 — May 28, 2013 Lexie R. Holtsclaw Sr. age 73 of Bedford, passed away at 4:04 p.m. on Tuesday at IU Health Hospice House in Bloomington. He was born on Jan. 26, 1940, in Dugger, to Robert Preston and Orzella Mabel Holtsclaw. Lexie married Donna Gentry on Feb. 14, 1959, at Mount Pleasant Christian Church in Bedford and she survives. Lexie was a Tool & Die Maker at General Motors in Bedford, and was a supervisor at General Motors when he retired. After retiring from GM, he continued to work many more years as a Tool & Die Maker at D&M Tool in Bedford, Bedford Machine & Tool, and Bedford Recycling. He was a member of the Bedford Masonic Lodge F&AM No. 14, Scottish Rite of Indianapolis, the Lawrence County Cattleman’s Association and Mount Pleasant Christian Church. Survivors include his loving wife of 54 years, Donna Holtsclaw of Bedford; three sons, Scott Holtsclaw and wife Tracy of Bedford, Lexie Holtsclaw Jr. and wife Tammy of Bedford and Tom Harrell and wife Beth of Bedford; grandchildren, Brooke (Chad) Teague, Brittany (Shile) Anderson, Blair (Anthony) Taylor, Courtney Holtsclaw, Kennedy Holtsclaw, Josh Harrell, Aaron Harrell, and Nate and Hillary Norman; great-grandchildren, Hadley, Campbell and Crete Teague, Nadia and Zane Anderson, and Remington Lex Taylor; and one brother, Jerry L. Holtsclaw and wife Carol of Oolitic. Lexie was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Debra Lynn Holtsclaw; one daughter-in-law, Polly (Wagoner) Holtsclaw; two sisters, Dorothy Armstrong and Mary Jane Price; and three brothers, Ernie W. Conklin March 12, 1934 — May 28, 2013 Newman Levi “Bud” Conklin, 79, of Bloomington, died at 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital Hospice House. Born March 12, 1934, in O’Fallon, Ill., he was the son of Newman A. and Margarite (Rable) Conklin. He married Emma Jean Weber on May 23, 1986 in Bedford; and she survives. He was a manager with W. T. Grant and the regional operations manager with Coast to Coast Hardware, and also a partner in the Jug Store in Bedford, until it was sold in 2006. He was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church; American Legion Gillen Post No. 33, and was a U.S. Navy Veteran. Surviving are his wife, Emma Jean Conklin of Bloomington; his son, Michael N. (Betty) Conklin of Bloomington; two grandchildren, Kaci and Bailee of Bloomington; two brothers, William Conklin of Caseyville, Ill., and Scott Conklin of Dawson Springs, Ky. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Lewis Conklin. There will be a Memorial service at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 9 at the First United Presbyterian Church of Bedford, with the Rev. Adams March 18, 1939 — May 27, 2013 Bobbie L. Adams, age 74, of Bedford, passed away on Sunday at the Waters in Martinsville. He was born March 18, 1939, in Rome, Ga., to John W. and Dorthy A. (Pullen) Adams, He married Jan C. Adams on March 19, 1965, in Lakeland, Fla., and she preceded him in death on April 14, 2009. Bobbie graduated from Pinecrest High School in Florida, was retired from the Houston, Texas Teamster’s, and also was a photographer for Olan Mills. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving with 101st Airborne. Survivors include one son, John Adams and wife Carol of Orlando, Fla., one daughter, Michel “Shelly” Ratkovich and husband Moe of Bedford; two sisters, Willine Colding and husband Elton of Rome, Ga., and Judy Underwood and husband Jimmy of Plant City, Fla.; grandchildren, Gemma, Kayleigh, Lucy, Shelly, and Mark; great-grandchildren, Allissa and Makayla; and several nieces and nephews. Robbins Sept. 6, 1923 — May 26, 2013 Loran William “Robbie” Robbins, 89, of Greenwood, died Sunday. Born Sept. 6, 1923, in Bedford, he was the son of the late Louis and Mary Robbins. He graduated from Bedford High School in 1942 and began working as a draftsman for Jeff Boat in Jeffersonville, then enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After his military service, he became a driver for Mayflower Moving Company where he met his loving wife Mildred Louise “Mickey” Robbins, who preceded him in death. He served as president of Local 135 of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters for 18 years. His hobbies included Native American history, hunting, fishing and gardening. He successfully passed down his love of all to his children who are eternally grateful for these gifts. Robbie is survived by two siblings: Lorena June Harrell of Bedford and Douglas Robbins of Nashville, Tenn.; three children, Carl Robbins of Lewisville, Scott Robbins of Carpentersville, Ill., and Karan Bunch of Bargersville; nine grandchildren; three step-grandchildren: and six great-grandchildren. Mertie Yeskie Nov. 23, 1923 — May 28, 2013 Mertie Yeskie, 89, of Mitchell, formerly of Oolitic, died at 12:40 p.m. on Tuesday at Mitchell Manor. Born Nov. 23, 1923, in Pulaski County, Ky., she was the daughter of William and Alice (Jones) Keith. She married Warren Eugene Silvers on Aug. 30, 1941, and he preceded her in death on April 12, 1959. She later married Willard Yeskie on July 27, 1963, and he also preceded her in death on Nov. 13, 1999. She retired from Indiana Laborers Training Institute and was a member of the Oolitic Baptist Church. Survivors include three sons, Harold Silvers of Marksville, La., and Denny and Mark Silvers, both of Bedford; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one sister, Viola Nicholas of Tateville, Ky.; two stepsisters, Reva Jones and Louise Fritos both of Clearwater, Fla.; and three brothers, Robert Keith of Bronston, Ky., David Keith of Charlestown, and Danny Keith of Louisville, Ky. She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; two sons, Roger and Tom Silvers; a daughter, Juanita Silvers; grandson, Trevis Silvers; four brothers, Lowell, Otis, Bill and Jim Keith; and seven sisters, Clara Helton, Clara Hardwick, Emerine Neely, Magae Godsey, Alice Super, Bertha Dunken and Joyce Seeler. May 28, 2013 Harry ‘Sonny’ Dorsett Feb. 24, 1924 — May 25, 2013 Harry “Sonny” Dorsett, 89, Mitchell, passed away at 10:50 a.m. Saturday at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital. Born Feb. 24, 1924, in Pittsburg, Ill., he was the son of Harry H. and Maude (Weddle) Dorsett. He married Sheila Carroll Jan. 13, 1946. For 38 years Sonny owned and operated the Phillips 66 and Marathon service stations at Four Points in Mitchell. He served 16 years on the Mitchell Community Schools School Board during the construction of Hatfield Elementary School and the Mitchell Junior-Senior High School. Sonny attended the Mitchell Presbyterian Church and was a member of Mitchell Masonic Lodge No. 228 F&AM. He graduated from Huron High School in 1942. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II and served in Italy. His decorations and citations included World War II Victory Medal, Distinguished Unit Badge, American Theater Ribbon, European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with 7 Bronze Stars, and Good Conduct Medal. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 250. Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Sheila Dorsett of Mitchell; daughter, Christina Lee (Larry) Brown of Mitchell; son, Kippie Joe (Vanessa) Dorsett of Mitchell; grandchildren, Melissa Brown (Steve) Deer of Knoxville, Tenn., and Rebecca Lynn Brown (Eric) Mason of Mitchell; great-grandchildren, Joshua David (Katie) Deer, Nathan Daniel Deer, Cole Thomas Mason, Logan Patrick Mason, Ryan Spurgeon, Nicolas Spurgeon and Hunter Spurgeon; and great-great-granddaughter, Eliza Rose Deer. May 27, 2013 Robert Lee Pennington March 19, 1941 — May 24, 2013 Robert Lee Pennington of Shoals passed away on May 24, 2013, at home surrounded by family. He was born March 19, 1941, in Washington, Ind., to Roy Martin and Ethel (Bledsoe) Pennington. He graduated from Loogootee High School with the Class of 1959. He served six years in the U.S. Army, including two tours in Vietnam. He married Kathryn “Kathy” Kidd on Nov. 28, 1969, and she survives. He was a loving Dad to his children, Kristina Terry (Danny Tow) of Shoals and Robbie Pennington of Washington, and was a great Peepaw to his granddaughter, Autumn Terry. He is also survived by sisters Laverene Kiefner of Loogootee and Norma (Hermann) Senger of Shelby Township, MI; a sister-in-law, Vicki Silvers of Springville; six nephews; three nieces; and several great-nephews and great-nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Wilma Ledgerwood and Patricia Warren; nephews Donnie Kiefner and Bobby Warren; and niece Diane Kiefner. He was a member of the Dover Hill Christian Union Church. He retired from NSWC Crane with 32 years of service. He loved Special Olympics and volunteered for Orange County Special Olympic events. He greatly enjoyed most sports and country and rock ‘n’ roll music. He prided himself on knowledge of these subjects and was hard to stump with trivia questions about them. She graduated from Mitchell High School in 1954. Marilyn was a secretary for Van Hoy Heating and Cooling and was a member of the Bride of Christ Fellowship. She later married Robert N. Skinner and he preceded her in death on July 19, 1999. She was a homemaker and a life-long member of the First United Methodist Church. She was a member of Tri Kappa Sorority and enjoyed playing bridge. Burgess, 92, of Lima, died at 7:15 a.m. on Tuesday at his residence surrounded by his children. He was born Dec. 16, 1920, in Bedford, to John and Lillie (Clouse) Burgess. On April 7, 1947, he married Mary Sciranka who preceded him in death on March, 20, 2008. Carl was a member of St. Gerard Catholic Church, Lima, Ohio. He was a World War II Army Veteran and member of VFW Post No. 1275. He retired from Ex-cello Corp. in 1983. He came to Lima looking for work and found the love of his life, Mary. Carl loved his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren with simple, honest and unconditional love. He had the wonderful gift of making you feel like you were the most important person in the world. He was a passionate Indiana University basketball, Notre Dame football and Cleveland Browns fan. He also loved fishing, golf and gardening. All of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren shared his passion for all of the above. Edward Frega Jr. June 7, 1934 — May 18, 2013 Edward Walter “Ed” Frega Jr., 78 of Williams, went to be with his Savior at 3:12 a.m. on Saturday at IU Health Bloomington Hospital. Ed was born June 7, 1934 in Maywood, Ill., the son of Edward Walter and Lydia (Hintz) Frega. He attended school in Bellwood, Ill. and is a 1953 graduate of Proviso High School in Maywood, Ill. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force serving in Germany and the Azores from 1954-1957. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Alice E. Knapp, married May 4, 1968 in Westchester, Ill. He worked for American Can Co. in Maywood, Ill. After American Can, he was employed by Illinois Tool Works for 27 years as a contractor for the United States Navy. His work involved the towed array handling system on nuclear submarines and he was privileged to have worked on every U.S. Naval Base in the world. He followed the naval contract to Crane, to Chesapeake, Va. and then to Middletown, R.I., being in each place for four years. He retired on July 19, 2002, and they decided to call Williams their home once again. Since moving to Williams in 1991, they have attended Calvary Lutheran Church in Bedford where Ed served on various committees. He was a dedicated member of the Bedford Rotary Club, as well as a board member of the Lawrence County Concert Association. Riggs, 79, passed away on Saturday, May 11, 2013, in Bloomington, IN. Burton was born in Bloomington August 29, 1933, and was a lifelong resident. He graduated from Bloomington High School. While in school he was a radio announcer at the local radio station, WTTS, on South Walnut across from the old Bloomington High School. For many years he operated the Riggs Real Estate Agency and also was an auctioneer. He worked as an accountant for the local General Electric Company, retiring from there. The main focus of his career was to teach ones in the community the Bible’s hope for the future. He was very active in this work as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Burton is survived by Barbara, his wife of 51 years. Also one sister, Martha of Pomona, CA, one sister-in-law, Margaret Kern of Bedford IN, as well as many nieces and nephews, and his extended family, too many to mention. He was a member of IUOE Local 841, and was a faithful member of Grace Baptist Church. Jim was an avid Jeff Gordon fan, loved to collect old cars, loved his trucks and more than anything loved the time he was able to spend with his family, especially his grandchildren. Henry Jan. 24, 1926 — May 6, 2013 Robert W. “Bob” Henry, 87, of 3008 Shawnee Dr. (Bliss House), Bedford, died at 2:30 a.m. on Monday in Bedford. He was born Jan. 24, 1926, in Detroit, Mich. He married Mary Jane Thompson in 1947 and she preceded him in death in 2005. He was a world champion hair stylist from the early 1950s through the mid 1980s winning several world championships in New York and Chicago. He and his wife, Mary Jane started the Jack Lowther Little League in 1951, one of the first Jr. football leagues in Detroit. Bob was also a color commentator with Al Walker and John Williams for the Bedford Stonecutters in the 1960s and BNL in the early 1970s. He was a former board member of the Bedford Parks and Recreation Dept. and Bedford Dance Club. He was an avid golfer and had been active with the Otis Park Men’s Club. Born March 13, 1939, in Mitchell, Barbara was the daughter of Orland R. and Josephine D. (Hicks) Merry. She married Paul Waltz July 26, 1989. Barbara’s life was blessed with abundant friendships, exciting adventures, a loving devoted family and bountiful success. She graduated in 1957 from Huron High School. It was during her senior trip to Washington, D.C., she discovered a love of travel and adventure she would enjoy her entire life. Barbara was independent, multitalented and hardworking. She was not afraid of new or difficult challenges. As a young woman she balanced her career as a butcher at Fritchie’s Country Market with the demands of motherhood. One of her favorite joys as a parent was attending her children’s many sports and tournament games. Barbara was always curious and never limited by traditional roles; she would later become a founding partner in D&D Pallet Corporation. She journeyed many paths and was open to new experiences. Always eager to learn, she mastered many skills including auto sales, dog grooming and landscaping. She is said to have baked the best apple dumplings in the world. Barbara was eager to be involved in lives of those she loved and was instrumental in helping many family and friends achieve their dreams in education, business and life. Barbara was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Columbus. She never really retired and was a volunteer at Columbus Regional Hospital for many years. She remained a valuable resource and inspiration to many. Through her encouragement and support, many friends, family, and especially her children found professional success. One of her greatest joys in life was traveling with her family, discovering new places and sharing time with her grandchildren. Barbara will always be remembered for her courage, joy for life and endless energy. She will be dearly missed. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Norman; and sister, Imogene. Ramey June 11, 1938—May 2, 2013 Larry C. Ramey, 74, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday. He was born June 11, 1938, in Mitchell. He was the son of Clayton and Evangeline Ramey. He graduated from Mitchell High School in 1956 where he played football, basketball and baseball. He went one year to Vanderbilt University, where he was the outstanding freshman basketball player for the Commodores. Wanting to play for Tony Hinkle, he transferred to Butler, graduating in 1961. He got his master’s degree and superintendent’s license at Butler in 1963. Also, at Butler, he played in the NIT at Madison Square Garden. After graduation, Larry became assistant basketball coach at Mooresville High School. He was the head coach from 1963-1971, where he led the Pioneers to their first sectional win in 30 years. During his tenure as an educator, he was athletic director and assistant principal at Indian Creek High School and principal at Monrovia High School. After retiring from education, he was estimator and project manager for Perry Acoustics in Mooresville. Some of the honors he received during his lifetime were: Butler’s Hilton U. Brown Award; Mid-State Coach of the Year, Mooresvillian of the Year; and the Mooresville High School Hall of Fame. Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Janet; his children, DeeAnn Ramey (husband Donald), Jana Ramey (husband Todd), and Kevin Ramey (wife Jennifer); grandchildren include, Max, Alexandra, Taylor and Dixon.
