September 30, 2013 Idah Short Sept. 7, 1915 — Sept. 29, 2013 Idah Louise Short, 98, of Bedford died at 5:19 a.m. on Sunday, September 29, 2013, at the IU Health Bedford Hospital. Born September 7, 1915, in Indianapolis, she was the daughter of Robert and Agnes (Tremp) Peterman. She married Milton A. Short, and he preceded her in death. She was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church. She also served on the Red Cross Board, and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Survivors include two sons: William Short of Bedford and Michael Short and his wife Ginny of Bedford; one daughter: Marjory Starnes and Jim Richardson of Bedford; two stepsons: Larry Stearley and his wife Nancy of Gulf Shores, AL, and Gary Stearley of Riverview, FL; seven grandchildren: Jennifer Mungle, Andrew (Coby) Short, Abigail Henning, Sherry Stiles, Deanna Short, Debbie Short, and Kevin Hoopingarner; three step grandchildren: Amy May, Jennifer Hartman and Heather Ledford; 18 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and one sister Lillian (Tudie) Vicars. Funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2013, at the St. John’s Episcopal Church with Father Charlie Carpenter officiating. A committal service will be at 12:30 p.m. at the Grandview Cemetery in Bloomfield. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 1, at the Day & Carter Mortuary. Richard Turner Sept. 12, 1935 — Aug. 29, 2013 Richard Delano Turner, 77, Harlingen, Texas, formerly of the Bedford-Mitchell area, died on Aug. 29. He was born Sept. 12, 1935, in Lawrence County, Ind., the son of Robert R. and Radie Kathleen (Turner) Finley. He married Jo Ann (Bell) Turner Sept. 8, 1956, in Taunton, Mass. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps, four years active and four years inactive, and after moving to Mitchell he owned and operated Turner Transportation Inc. and drove trucks for Carpenter Body Works. Richard was a former member of the Mitchell Police Department. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 250 since 1966 and the Mitchell Masonic Lodge No. 228 F. & A.M. since 1976. After retiring as a Lawrence Co. Weights and Measurers Inspector, he and his wife moved to Harlingen, Texas. He is survived by his wife; two sisters, Naomi Norman, Bedford, and Anah Mae Briscoe, Mitchell; a brother Robert Turner, Monticello, Ky.; two grandsons, J.D. (Crystal) Powell Jr. and Darin (Allie) Powell, both of Bedford; two great-granddaughters, Ava Caroline Powell and Adrianna Sue Powell; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and stepfather George Finley, Bloomington; a daughter, Debra Sue Powell, and a son Richard D. Turner Jr., both of Mitchell; one brother, Robert Turner, Bedford; one sister, Dorothy (Turner) Norman. A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 3, in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center with Bro. Jack Taylor officiating. She was born on Dec. 3 1922, in Lawrence County to Marlene (Blackwell) Cobb and Sam Cobb. Frances married Tom Stigall Dec. 30, 1941. Together they had three daughters Marlene Stigall, Sherry (Herb) Griffin and Sheila (Mike) Gilbert. Frances and Tom enjoyed several years of traveling and enjoying life together. She was a homemaker a member of the Oolitic Baptist Church and a devoted Christian. Frances had five grandsons, Anthony Lewis, Clay Smith, Johnny Mike (Lora) Gilbert, Jared (Melissa) Gilbert and Justin Gilbert, and nine great-grandkids, Abby, Issak and Izabel Gilbert, Carson, Owen and Lola Gilbert, and Gage, Levi, and Seth Smith, whom she loved dearly. She had several nieces and nephews She leaves behind a brother-in-law John Tirey; sisters-in-law Thelma Cobb, Christine Ritchey, Barbra Mcfadden, Donna Faye Stigall. She was proceded in death by her loving husband; her parents; her daughter Marlene; two brothers, Walter Cobb and James Cobb, and two sisters, Ester Lewis and MaryAlice Tirey, Frances was loved by many and will be sadly missed and always remembered for her devotion to her family and her fun loving ways. September 29, 2013 Martha ‘Jane’ Kendall June 25, 1942 — Sept. 27, 2013 Martha “Jane” Kendall, 71, of Oolitic, died at 11:05 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 27, 2013, at Westview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Born June 25, 1942, in Bedford, she was the daughter of Curtis and Anna Marie (Collier) Elkins. She married William Daniel Kendall on Dec. 31, 1961, in Lawrenceville, Ill., and he survives. She graduated from Oolitic High School in 1961 and retired from General Electric in 2001 after 32 years. She attended Hillcrest Christian Church. Jane loved cooking and family gatherings. Surviving with her husband, Bill, of Oolitc, are two sons, William Douglas Kendall and Michael Curtis Kendall, both Oolitic; one sister, Becki Woodsmall and husband, Ray, of Avoca; one half-brother, Richard Baugh of Bedford; nephews, Daniel Woodsmall of Avoca, Jordan Woodsmall of Manhattan, N.Y., Bill Cummings of Mooresville, Ind., Gregory Baugh of Bedford and Brian Baugh of Bloomington; nieces, Andrea Fields and husband, Mike, of Bedford, Christy Farhar and husband, Ed, of Shoals, Johnna Woodsmall of Columbus, Ohio, Tammy Gilstrap and husband, Ray, of Bedford, Beth Baugh of Bloomington, and Robin Webb and her husband, Brian, of Bedford; and numerous grandnieces and nephews. Barney Junior Terrell Dec. 29, 1950 — Sept. 27, 2013 Barney Junior Terrell, 62, of Springville, died at 10:50 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 27, 2013, at IU Health University Hospital. Born Dec. 29, 1950, in Indianapolis, he was the son of Barney and Francis (Moore) Terrell. He married Susan Hatchett on July 8, 1993, and she survives. He was employed at Laborers Union #741 and had also worked as a welder at Bruner Engineering and Manchester Tank. Barney was a Vietnam Veteran as a Paratrooper serving with the 82nd Airborne and a member of Life Tabernacle Church. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, outdoor activities and spending time with his grandchildren. Surviving with his wife, Suzi, are six children, Stormi Terrell of Nevada, Darren Terrell and his wife, Melissa, of Bedford, Jessica Maxwell and husband, Ben, of Nashville, Tenn., Tala Saylor of Bloomfield, Danny Phillips and wife, Angie, of Springville and Jessica Enochs of Needmore. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Tyrone Cowan, Trey McReynolds, Akia McReynolds, Lakota Terrell, Emma Terrell, Jimmy Saylor, Alisha Saylor, Lee Phillips, Ashley Phillips, Levi Phillips, Logan Phillips and Olivia Enochs; siblings, Yvonne Combs of Bedford, Eugene Terrell of Mitchell, Marilyn Durham of Kentucky, Peggy Bishop of Mitchell, Ellie Terrell of Alabama, Bill Terrell of Mitchell, Ronnie Terrell of Mitchell, Larry Terrell of Bedford and Carole Clem of Mitchell. Galloway, 93, of Bloomington, passed away Friday, Sept. 27, 2013, at Bell Trace Health and Living. She was born on July 23, 1920, in Freedom to Mark and Nina (Price) Needy. She was married to Basil Galloway, who preceded her in death on Dec. 31, 1964. Leah retired after working at Indiana Bell, where she started as an operator and retired in management. After retirement, Leah worked at the Broadview Clinic in Bedford. She was a member of the Woodhaven Christian Church. Leah enjoyed traveling to Florida, Hawaii and the western part of the country. Her grandchildren were a special joy to her and she loved them all dearly. She and Basil were also square dancers and enjoyed many dances throughout their marriage. Leah’s family would like to thank IU Health Hospice and the staff at Bell Trace for their extraordinary care she received from them. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and brothers, Robert and Richard Needy. Leah is survived by her daughters, Diane Inman (Denny) of Bedford and Laura Galloway of Bloomington; grandchildren, James Inman, Kip Inman (Charity), Alissia Inman (Monte Bastin); great-grandchildren, Samantha, Taylor, Kody, Alex, Keaton, Danielle, Dax and Kenley; and sister, Stella Jane Franklin of Bloomington. September 28, 2013 Vera Brown July 10, 1940 — Sept. 25, 2013 Vera Brown, 73 of Bedford, died at 11:57 p.m., Wednesday at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital. Born July 10, 1940, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Maynard Henry and Mary Delight (Bates) Gardner. She had been employed in nursing and as a factory worker. Surviving are three daughters, Colleen Carnita Jackson Summitt and Kenneth of Bloomington, Melissa Dawn Wilson and Joe Kern of Mitchell and Leatha Gail Taylor and Barry of Tunnelton/Bono; one son, Coy Dale Brown and wife Elisabeth of Bedford; one sister, Edith Sanders; 14 grandchildren; three great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Ruth Smith, Mary (Kathy) Barlow and Dotty Martinez; and one brother, Don Gardner. Dora Rowe June 21, 1922 — Sept. 26, 2013 Dora Rowe, 91, formerly of Bedford, died at 12:45 p.m. at Ketcham Memorial Center, Odon. Born June 21, 1922, in Oolitic, she was the daughter of Noble and Frances (Stultz) Hackney She married Chester LeRoy Rowe on Jan. 31, 1940, and he preceded her in death on May 19, 1985. She was a retired insurance agent with Keach and Grove. She was a member of Avoca Baptist Church, American Legion Auxillary of Linton, AARP. She enjoyed playing Bingo, camping, fishing and was an avid reader. Surviving are her two daughters, Kay Wilson of Glendale and Rita (Bruce) Burns of Odon; one brother, Marvin “Ned” Hackney of Bedford; six grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Key Aug. 9, 1991 — Sept. 25, 2013 Chase D. Key, age 22 of Bedford, passed away at 10:10 p.m. on Wednesday at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital. He was born at the Bedford Medical Center on Aug. 9, 1991, to Danny D. and Karen L. (Cooper) Key. Chase was a 2010 Graduate of Brown County High School, and attended the Mitchell Presbyterian Church. Survivors include his parents, Danny D. and Karen L. Greg Waggoner Dec. 26, 1964 — Sept. 26, 2013 Greg Waggoner, 48 of Mitchell, died on Thursday at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Born Dec. 26, 1964, in Seymour, he is the son of Wayne and Beverly (Emily) Waggoner. He married Tina Vollrath on Nov. 28, 1992, and she survives. He was an electrical engineer at Crane for 25 years. He graduated in 1983 from Seymour High School and in 1987 from Purdue University. He was a member of Avoca Baptist Church. He loved his children, fantasy football, baseball, gardening, and pitching horseshoes with his father. Surviving with his wife Tina, of Mitchell, are two sons, Curtis Waggoner and Kyle Waggoner of Mitchell, two brothers, Jeff Waggoner and wife Amy of North Vernon and Matt Waggoner and wife Tracey of Garrison, N.D.; his parents of Seymour; several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles, and father- and mother-in-law, Tom and Sarah Vollrath of Marysville, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his, grandparents, Cleve and Thelma Emily and Nellie and Glenn Waggoner, his uncles, J.B. and Gary Emily. Hamilton Sept. 17, 1958 — Sept. 21, 2013 Danny Lee Hamilton, 55, passed away at 4:25 a.m. Saturday at his residence. Born Sept. 17, 1958, in Martin County, he was the son of John Woodston and Virginia (Wilcoxen) Hamilton. He married Sonya Maria Weissling May 1, 2009. Danny was employed at Delta Coating and was a member of Loyal Order of Moose Lodge No. 689 in Bedford and Fraternal Order of Eagles in Shoals. Surviving are his wife, Sonya Hamilton of Mitchell are daughters, Amanda Hamilton and Aaliyah Hamilton of Mitchell; grandchildren, Jonathan Hill and Terry Tolbert; mother and stepfather, Virginia and Leroy Brown of Mitchell; brother, Harold Hamilton of Mitchell and sister, Marcella Moore of Bedford. His father and brother, John Hamilton, preceded him in death. Baker Feb. 4, 1962 — Sept. 25, 2013 Thomas Lewis Baker, 51, of Bloomington, lost his battle with cancer Wednesday evening at Hospice House in Bloomington. Beside him at his passing were his sons, Cody D. Baker of Ellettsville and Thomas M. Baker of Indianapolis; sisters, Cynthia L. Baker (Miller) and husband Charles of Tok, Alaska and Melissa A. Baker (LuAllen) and husband Brian of Bedford. Thomas was born in Washington to Nancy L. (Chaillaux) Baker and Virgil L. Baker. He was preceded in death by both parents; and grandparents Olive and Jim Chaillaux and Bessie and Drass Baker; uncles, Harold Baker and Kenny Chaillaux; aunts, Barbara (Simmerman) Jerrell and Lanor Baker; and cousin, Kent Chaillaux. Thomas will be missed by his entire family as well as dedicated/loving friend, Colleen (Jackson) Summitt. Hurst Feb. 7, 1944 — Sept. 18, 2013 James Keith Hurst, MGySgt USMC, retired after 30 years, including two tours of duty in Vietnam, passed away Sept. 18 in Bloomington. He was born on Feb. 7, 1944, in Bloomington, to Fred Thomas and Leota Blanche (Decker) Hurst. He is survived by a daughter, Janna Marie (Hurst) Castillo and her children, Jordan Keith and Maria Adela Castillo; brother, Carl L. (Olivia A.) Joe J. Johnson Oct. 5, 1928 — Sept. 24, 2013 Joe J. Johnson, 84, of Bedford, passed away on Tuesday in Bedford. Born Oct. 5, 1928, in Bedford, he was the son of Charles W. and Irene (Troy) Johnson. He married Teresa Ann Endris on April 22, 1950; and she preceded him in death. He was an engineer at Central Foundry, Bedford, from which he retired in 1986. He was a graduate of Bedford High School, Class of 1946 and GMI, Flint, Mich., Class of 1951. He was a member of the B.P.O.E. Elks, Bedford #826. He was of the Protestant Faith. He taught Sunday school at Bono United Methodist Church and served as a Corporal in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. In 1988, he attended ATA Training Academy in Indianapolis obtaining a second Associates degree in Aircraft Maintenance. Lyall worked a number of years as an aircraft mechanic, he had been currently employed by Ames Aviation in Wilmington, Ohio. His main hobby was flying remote control aircraft as well as being a military aircraft history buff. After the death of his mother, he and his two brothers, Harold and Arnold, lived with his grandparents Louis and Anna Padgett in their love-filled home in Williams. He married Gloria Gilstrap on May 30, 1950, and she survives. He was a graduate of Williams High School, Class of 1948 and of the Western Electronic Institute, Los Angeles, Calif., and was an electrical contractor. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving with the U.S. Army Airborne; he was a member of the Calvary Lutheran Church, Bedford, and of the American Legion, Gillen Post No. 33, Bedford. Eleanor was born in Peoria, Ill., on July 9, 1929, the daughter of the late Harold and Dorothy Grafton Hewitt. She married Robert L. “Bob” Hannum in Bedford, on March 31, 1948, and he preceded her in death on April 1, 2011. Eleanor retired from Commonwealth Insurance Company in Columbus, where she was an executive secretary. She was a member of First Christian Church, the Red Hat Society and the Mill Race Center in Columbus. Eleanor enjoyed traveling with her husband of 63 years to all 50 states, Europe, Canada, Australia and Mexico. They spent many winter months in Ruskin, Fla., and enjoyed sailing. She was an avid reader and enjoyed playing cards and crocheting. Eleanor is survived by two sons, Greg (Kathie) Hannum of Columbus, and Randy L. (Laura) Hannum of Bloomington; three sisters, Jeanne Dyer of California, and Wilma Reynolds and Sue (Bob) Reynolds, both of Bedford; a brother, Jim (Gail) Hewitt of Bedford; three grandchildren, Matthew and Laura Hannum both of Columbus, and Ken Hannum of Ohio; and two great-grandchildren. Tincher, 87, of Orleans, passed away at the StoneBridge Health Campus in Bedford, Monday evening, surrounded by his family. He was born Feb. 12, 1926, in Huron, the son of William and Eva Mae Wease Tincher. He graduated from Huron High School with the Class of 1944. He entered into the U. S. Navy serving in World War II. John married Helen Gaither on June 6, 1946, and she preceded him in death on March 2, 1994. He was a farmer. He was retired from GM Powertrain in 1992. He loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter, especially coon hunting. He also loved to fish and dig ginseng. He was a member of the Erie United Methodist Church in Bedford. He is survived by three sons, Rodney S. Tincher and Dennis Tincher, both of Orleans, and Robert D. Tincher of Mitchell; two daughters, Donna K. Tincher of Paoli and Vicki Tincher Lee of Bedford; eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Alice Siri of Reno, Nev., and Norma Hanson of Redding, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and 17 brothers and sisters; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday at the Ochs-Tetrick Funeral Home in Orleans with Brother Charles Kielhorn officiating. Burial will follow in the Trinity Springs Cemetery in Shoals. Swango Dec. 5, 1965 — Sept. 2, 2013 God took our angel, Denise Elaine Swango, to her new home on Monday morning in the presence of her mother, brother, and best friend. Heaven gained a bright star. The Swango family lost one of the world’s finest daughters, sisters, sisters-in-law and aunts. Her many acquaintances lost a Godly mentor and devoted friend! Denise was loyal to her Savior and to everyone else who was lucky enough to know her. She was a baptized believer and a hard worker in her congregation. Denise was born in Bedford, on the 5th of December in 1965, to Olin Rex and Reva Gail Swango. She graduated from Bedford North Lawrence High School with the Class of 1984. She was first employed as secretary at the First Baptist Church in Bedford, then as pre-school teacher at Kinder Kollege also in Bedford. For the last 16 years, she served at Insite/PAS Team Leader at Hoosier Uplands in Mitchell where she received both the Spotlight Award and the Bureau of Aging and In-Home Service Commitment of Excellence recognition. Much of her spare time was spent as a FANatic about the Indiana Hoosiers football, basketball and baseball teams. She was a real Pittsburgh Steelers fan at heart, but her blood bled cream and crimson. Every other available minute was spent either in animal sitting for various vacationers or in baking of goodies for others’ special occasions. She and Tracy Zeeks were scheduled to cater their first 100-plate full meal on Sept. 12 at the Senior Games in Mitchell. She is survived by her mother, Reva Gail Swango; her brother, Daren Swango, her sister-in-law, Melanie Swango; one nephew, Bode Swango; one niece, Ryley Swango; her very best friend, Tracy Zeeks; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. She was preceded in death by her father, Olin Rex Swango; her grandparents, Russell and Anna Swango and Kent and Ruth Sears; and multiple aunts and uncles. As her family, we ARE human and will mourn her passing as long as we live. However, our God is in Control!!! And that is a reason for celebration!!! Louise Anderson Dec. 13, 1927 — Sept. 3, 2013 Louise Anderson, 85, of Bedford, died at 1 a.m. on Tuesday at StoneBridge Health Campus, Bedford. Born Dec. 13, 1927, in Heltonville, she was the daughter of Leonard S. and Neva Bell (Pascoe) McArthur. She married Abraham Anderson, who died Feb. 18, 2005. She was a dedicated U.S. Navy employee working as a Supervisor at NWSC, Crane, retiring in 1988; was a member of the Avoca Baptist Church and loved gardening and her flowers. Surviving are two sons, James (Waneta) Wires, Mitchell and Ed (Jean) Wires, Bedford; one step-son, Dean Anderson, Bedford; one granddaughter, Jamie (Brian) Fullen, Mitchell; two grandsons, Brandon (Diana) Wires and Bradley Wires, both of Bedford; four great-grandchildren, Jason and Jacob Mosier and Laura and Wyatt Wires; and one sister, Bess (Stewart) Moore, Center Pointe, IN. R. ‘Gene’ Mundy Feb. 20, 1927 — Sept. 2, 2013 Robert “Gene” Mundy, 86, Mitchell, passed away at 5:50 a.m. Monday at Mitchell Manor Living and Rehabilitation Center. Born Feb. 20, 1927, in Columbus, he was the son of Joe H. and Vida (Schuff) Mundy. He married Maxine Witmer Oct. 12, 1947. Gene retired from Mitchell Transport with 32 years of service, and was a farmer and Beck’s Seed dealer. He graduated from Mitchell High School in 1946. He was a 24-year member of the Marion Township Rural Fire Department, Lawrence County 4-H Fair Board, Farm Bureau Board, and served 21 years on the Board of Supervisors of the Soil and Water Conservation District. Gene was a member many years of the First Christian Church and currently a member of the First Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, former commander of Warren T. Brock American Legion Post No. 69, and a member of American Legion Post No. 250. Surviving are children, Anita Gayle Schulz and husband Robert of Sellersburg, Jana Jean Mann and fiancé Dennis Amstutz of Mitchell, and Alan Lee Mundy of Jacksonville, Fla.; grandchildren, Gregory Warren Schulz, Eric Robert (Erin) Schulz, Melissa Jean (Brent) Courter, Monica Ranae (Adam) Ralph, Elisabeth Delynn Mundy, Ethan Alan Mundy, EmmaLee and Christine Mundy; great-granddaughters, Kyleigh and Breanna Courter and Olivia and Chelsea Ralph; sister, Sherlia Hunter of Mitchell; special friend, Jeannie Padgett of Mitchell; and several nieces and nephews.
