March 31, 2021 Aaron J. Brain Aug. 24, 1957 — March 29, 2021 Aaron J. Brain, 63, of Springville, went to be with the Lord at 5:22 am on Monday, March 29, 2021 at his residence. Born August 24, 1957 in Jasper, IN, he was the son of Joe and Mary Lou (Haase) Brain. He married Mattie (Wagers) Hopkins on December 1, 1982 and she survives. He was a graduate of Purdue University with the class of 1978 and a member of the Tunnel Hill Pentecostal Church. He was a mechanical engineer at NWSC Crane for thirty-seven years. Survivors include his wife, Mattie, of Springville; two sons, Christopher Eric Hopkins and wife, Emily and Dustin Aaron Brain and wife, Rebekah, both of Springville; four grandchildren, Savanah Nicole Hopkins, Alan Joseph Brain, Katie Emily Brain, Sarah Michelle Brain, and three children who were loved like grandchildren, Jedd Cummings, Cylaine Cummings and Clayton Cummings; four siblings, Jeffrey Brain, of Bedford, Theresa Magnus and husband, Mike, of Oolitic, Angie Shank and husband, Bruce, of Freedom, Jerry Brain and wife, Sarah, of Indianapolis; several nieces and nephews. He was loved by many family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 am on Friday, April 2nd at Tunnel Hill Pentecostal Church, 6605 S. March 30, 2021 Ray Butler March 01, 1947 — March 27, 2021 Ray Butler, 74, passed away Saturday, March 27, 2021, at Westview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Bedford. Born March 1, 1947, in Heltonville, he was the son of Bruce Dunlap and Nora Edith (Crabb) Butler. He married Dixie Lee Mayden August 6, 1984, and she preceded him in death April 28, 2007. Ray had been a mechanic all of his life and retired from Hubler Chevrolet Buick GMC. He was a member of the First Church of God and loved the Lord and his church family. Ray graduated from Heltonville High School in 1965. He enjoyed his animals, gardening, and riding his Harley. Ray was a U. S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War. Surviving are his daughter, Bambi Aliano of Bedford; siblings, Bessie George of Venice, Florida, Ethen Jensen of Austin, Minnesota, Cindy Buckles of Edmore, Michigan, Nancy Weaver of Richland. His parents; wife; grandson, Chase Tanner Aliano; and siblings, Ralph Arnold Butler, Wilma Nevitt, and Paul Eugene Butler, preceded him in death. Miller, 77, of Orleans, passed away at 1:20 PM on March 27, 2021 at Paoli Health and Living Community in Paoli, Indiana. He was born April 30, 1943 in Noblesville, IN, the son of Herman M. and Edith Juanita (Edwards) Miller. He married Francis (Frank) Cannon and he survives. He graduated from Bedford North Lawrence High School, class of 1961. He owned and operated Orleans Antiques for over twelve years. He is survived by his husband, Frank of Orleans; one sister, Judy Ann Ellis (Don) of Mitchell, IN; two brothers, Herman and Eddie Miller and several nieces, nephews and cousins. March 29, 2021 Janet Hendrix Padgett April 02, 1942 — March 26, 2021 Janet Hendrix Padgett, 78, of Paoli Indiana, passed away on Friday, March 26, 2021 at IU Health, Bedford. She was born in Paoli, Indiana on April 2, 1942 to Gene and Ruth Condra Hendrix. Janet married Dean Weikert in 1971 and he preceded her in death. She later married John Padgett on January 1, 1975. Janet was preceded in death by her parents, first husband, Dean Weikert, spouse, John Padgett, daughter, Pam Weikert, and son, Scott Padgett. She was a 1960 Class graduate and Class Treasurer of Paoli High School. Janet was a member of the Paoli United Methodist Church. Janet was a member the Orange County Republican Party where she served many years as Vice Chairwoman. She was a Delegate to the Republican State Convention numerous times. Janet testified before Congress in the McClosky & McIntire 8th Congressional recount. Janet was the first woman elected as Orange County Clerk and served from 1985-1992 and a Sales Representative for Rainbow Printing in Bedford, Indiana and was also owner of Jan’s Beauty Nook for many years. She enjoyed going to Florida and being a Snowbird. Janet enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Ford, 91, of Tampa, FL, formerly of Heltonville, IN, passed away on Friday, March 19, 2021 in Florida. Born October 11, 1929 in Heltonville, he was the son of Opal and Mary (Stafford) Ford. He married Marian Myers on October 11, 1953 and she preceded him in death on July 10, 1989. He retired as a mechanic for General Motors after 28 ½ years and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of the Heltonville Christian Church and Leesville Masonic Lodge. Survivors include two sons, Ken Ford, Jr., of Bedford and Douglas Ford, of Tampa, FL; a daughter, Elizabeth Fleetwood, of Heltonville; three grandchildren, Elizabeth M. Ford, Charity Cicak and husband Toby, and Heather Bamford and husband Paul; three great grandchildren, Alina Ford, Jacob Cicak, and Makenna George; a brother, Paul Ford and wife Patty of Heltonville. Born March 22, 1949, in Huron, he was the son of Donald and Louise (Etchison) Terrell. He married Connie Sue Pemberton July 16, 1988. Ted retired from the Indiana State Highway Department. Following retirement, he managed Dorsett Tree Farms. Ted was a family man and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping. (Johnson) Peavler July 26, 1963 — March 26, 2021 Judith E. (Johnson) Peavler, age 57, of Shoals, passed March 26, 2021 in Jasper, Indiana. She was born July 26, 1963 in Daviess County, Indiana to William Paul and Gladys Mae (York) Johnson. She graduated Shoals High School and Indiana University, was a Registration Clerk at Jasper Memorial Hospital and attended Mt. Union Church of Christ. Judith is survived by one brother, Donald P. Johnson of Shoals; one sister, Sharon Rose Wadsworth of Petersburg; nieces, Joanie Johnson of Plainville, Norma Collins of Shoals, Donna Boyd of Shoals, Nancy Cox of French Lick and Christina Wolak of Princeton; nephews, James Roberts of Bedford, Aaron Roberts of Greenwood and William Joseph Johnson of West Baden. Several great nieces and nephews also survive. She is preceded in death by her parents, one nephew Richard Dwayne Johnson; and two great nieces, Rebecca White and Nikki Boyd. Health Bedford Hospital. Born December 22, 1946 in Bedford, she was the daughter of Jim and Mary (Pannell) Way. She married Dale Mack on February 28, 1969 and he survives. She was a tax preparer for H & R Block Co. and attended Hillcrest Christian Church. Survivors include her husband, Dale, of Bedford; three children, Deanna Mack of Indianapolis, Tracy Mack and fiancé, Stephanie Clark, and Karyn Key and husband, Caleb, all of Bedford; seven grandchildren, Mason, Jarrett and Cooper Mack, Evan, Avery, Addison, and Kelsie Key. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Jimmy and Steve Way; three sisters, Rose Pruett, Betty Davis, and Marcia Blanton. Jill Orender Aug. 14, 1947 — March 24, 2021 R. Jill Orender, 73, of Bedford, passed away at 4:00 pm on Wednesday, March 24, 2021 at her residence. Born August 14, 1947 in Bedford, she was the daughter of Alonzo Francis “Bill” and Neva June (May) Luse. She married Robert Orender on September 28, 1968 and he survives. She was a hairstylist for forty years at several salons, her last being at the Hair Company. She was a member of the Avoca Baptist Church and former member of Altrusa International. She was an avid bowler, sitting on the board of directors for the Indiana State Bowling Association for twenty-one years and held office with the BWBA for over twenty years. Survivors include her husband, Robert, of Bedford; two sons, Geoff and wife, Missy Orender, and Timothy and wife, Jonetta Orender, all of Bedford; six grandchildren, Joby Turner, Jesse Turner, Jalen Turner and wife, Lori, Clayton Orender and wife, Anissa, Megan Orender, and Victoria Orender; three great grandchildren, Jack, Nash, and Sophie Turner; a brother, Jon Luse and wife, Merrilou, of Scottsburg; a sister, Jaynee Simmerman and husband, George, of Oolitic; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, and a sister, Jolene (in infancy). Following Jill’s wishes, cremation was chosen with private family services to follow at a later date. Born April 13, 1981, in Hammond, he was the son of George Albert and Judith Lynn (Boyd) Kender. Michael was an operating engineer and a member of IUOE Local No. 181. He was also a member of the Sons of the American Legion Post No. 250 and an auxiliary member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9107. Michael graduated from Mitchell High School in 2000. Michael was a loving dad, always jovial, and had the biggest smile in the room. He enjoyed four-wheeling and boating. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service as a mail carrier in Bloomington. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Mitchell American Legion and Paoli VFW. Darrell enjoyed playing cards, golfing and going to the casino. He enjoyed basketball, football and spending time with family and friends. She married Donald Harold Cottengaim March 21, 1970, and he preceded her in death February 14, 2019. Sandra was a certified nursing assistant and a 1957 graduate of Mitchell High School. She was a former member and Sunday school teacher at the First Christian Church. Surviving are her niece, Jacqueline Cottengain of Orleans; great-great nephew, Garett Miller of Orleans; several nieces and nephews. She was born August 30, 1941 in Orleans to parents, Winford & Julia (Lee) Crawford. She married Bobby Elliott July 5, 1960. Sue retired from the cafeteria at IU Health Paoli Hospital. Survivors include her Daughter, Anita Kerstiens of Santa Clause; Son, Kenny Elliott of Orleans; Grandchildren, Kris Bergbower of St. Meinrad, and Alexx Elliott of Bloomington. Born March 14, 1932 in Greene County the daughter of William and Lillian Autrey, she married George Helms December 16, 1953 and he preceded her in death. She was a member of the Tulip Church of God and was a homemaker. Martha is survived by her three sons, Dennis (Donna) of Springville, Russell and Larry of Bloomfield; sister-in-law, Phyllis Autrey of Anderson. She was preceded in death by her husband George, daughter Jane Ann (Helms) Jackson, her parents and step-mother, Irene Autrey, sisters, Emma Mundy, Laverne Resler, Margaret Crick, brothers, Max, Ray, Elmer Van and Billy. Frankie was an Army Ranger in the Vietnam War and served with the Ranger 25th Infantry L.R.R.P. He is the most decorated Vietnam veteran of Washington County. March 20, 2021 Doris Carole (Wagner) Warren Feb. 11, 1933 — March 15, 2021 Doris Carole (Wagner) Warren; mother of twins, Kristie Hillenburg and Kathie Whitesel, beloved wife, sister, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother, friend, lover of blue birds and Iris’, gently passed into the arms of her Savior in the early morning hours of March 15, 2021. She was 88 years old. Born Feb. 11, 1933, in Silverville, she spent most of her life in Bedford, before retiring to Naples, Florida, with her husband and love of her life, Harvey E. Warren. She spent her final years with her daughters in Little River, South Carolina, and Marlborough, Massachusetts. Doris was a dedicated worker who took pride in her accomplishments throughout the years, retiring in 1988 from Crane Naval Weapons Support Center in Indiana as a talented electronic technician receiving several commendations for her work. Doris was active in Eastern Star attaining the level of Worthy Matron of her Chapter in Bedford, and District Deputy of her area. Although Doris was small in stature she was unsurpassed in energy and heart. She had a love of life and people that will never be forgotten by those who knew her and those she touched. Her faith carried her through many difficulties and blessed her with things she treasured. We will never forget her childlike heart and infectious smile. Eldred and Vera Beatrice Bledsoe in Terre Haute. He passed away on March 18, 2020. As a child, he attended St. Patrick’s Grade School, then as a teen attended and graduated from Schutte High School. While living in Terre Haute, he attended Indiana State University and for more than 20 years, worked in the Eldred Family Moving and Storage Business. He entered the Seminary in Hale’s Corner, Wisconsin, earned a B.S. at Cardinal Stritch University and a M. Div. at the Sacred Heart School of Theology. He was ordained a Roman Catholic Priest for the Indianapolis Archdiocese on June 5, 1999. Before coming to St. Vincent and St. Mary in 2005, he served in Richmond, Indianapolis and Mooresville. He was instrumental in the opening of Becky’s Place, a homeless shelter for women and children in Bedford, and served on the Board of Catholic Charities. He had been a driving force in creating the Warming Shelter for Homeless Men in our area and he served on the Board of Bertha’s Mission, a local soup kitchen. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and Hope Resource Center. A man of God, he strived to be available to all he met. He was a wonderful human being and we were so fortunate to have him as our shepherd. God took him to Heaven a year ago today and our lives have never been the same. Rest in Peace, Father Rick. Gerry was an accomplished student receiving a full scholarship to Indiana University as an undergraduate. She was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority continuing her affiliation as an alumna. She took a European tour after graduation in 1952, returning to the Bedford area to teach French and History at Marshall Township School. Gerry and Jay Wood Collins met while they were students at IU. In 1953, they married and started a family moving from Georgia, to Florida, and finally to Indiana for Jay’s work. On December 29, 1958, Jay perished in a plane crash near Frankfort, Indiana on a business trip. During the six years that followed, with the support and guidance of family, friends, and Jay’s fraternity brothers, Gerry got her Master’s in Education, built the home that would be her residence until her death, and raised three children as a single parent. In June of 1964, she married architect Joseph D. True, Jr., her high school sweetheart. The True family became official with the addition of brother Jim a year later. Joe and Gerry were together 56 years. They traveled the US and abroad, often with Gerry’s sister, Jean, and her husband, Joe Atkins, researching genealogy in libraries or going to Broadway plays. Joe took Gerry to Frank Sinatra and Brian Stokes Mitchell concerts again and again without complaint or jealousy, secretly wishing he was golfing. Gerry’s focus was always her family. She supervised, supported, and facilitated her four children throughout their lives. She had a wonderful group of close friends who surrounded her socially for many years. She was a talented bridge player, a voracious reader, and crossword enthusiast. A possessed IU basketball fan (attending home games regularly for 45 years), she coached the Hoosiers from her seat in the old IU Fieldhouse, Assembly Hall, and in front of the television until recently. She was also a proud BHSS fan, but as her grandchildren came along, her pride in their activities extended her allegiance to other Bloomington area schools. Gerry will be remembered by her family for her intellect, kindness, self-sacrifice, and strength. She was the one who brought us all together in a place we call home and taught us what real love means. She loved us all to crumbs. Gerry was predeceased by her parents, both husbands, and her twin brother, Don Maddox. Cecil Clay Thurman Feb. 23, 1920 — March 08, 2021 After a fulfilling and productive life, Cecil Clay Thurman, 101, of Sellersburg, died peacefully on Monday, March 8, in the company of his children. Cecil was born in Highland Park, Michigan, on Feb. 23, 1920, the son of Nora Emerson Thurman and William Rufus Thurman, and lived his early childhood in Chapeze, Kentucky, and near Georgetown, and Greenville, Indiana. The family later relocated to Johnson County, where he graduated as one of six from Clark High School. Cecil was emblematic of the greatest generation, having lived both during the Depression, and then serving his country in WWII. His military service began with induction into the U.S. Army in October 1941, followed by basic training at Army camps in Indiana and Georgia. Then as part of the 34th. Infantry Division, 168th Infantry Regiment, he shipped out to Northern Ireland and Scotland for combat training. In November 1942, Operation Torch, the first major amphibious landing of WWII was launched in North Africa. As part of the Eastern landing force in Algeria, Cecil was seriously injured near the Kasserine Pass. He holds numerous awards including the Purple Heart, two bronze stars, and most important to him the Combat Infantryman’s Badge. After a lengthy recovery in North African and North Carolina, he was discharged in December 1944. Cecil was a devoted husband to his wife of 74 years, Bertha “Lucky” Luckett Thurman, who predeceased him in December 2018. Characteristically of this loving father and husband, he drove each day to the nursing home to visit her for over five years. His life was characterized by hard work, including as a young adult, working on the family farm and in tobacco fields, and helping pick tomatoes on a 100-acre plot. Later Cecil enjoyed a successful career in the wholesale hardware business working for Belknap Hardware as a sales representative and buyer for over 25 years. Never content to be idle, he continued to work in the “hardware” business he knew and loved, most recently with Sellersburg Hardware and Lumber, finally retiring at age 85. Cecil also enjoyed gardening, home projects, Indiana University basketball, watching NASCAR, and all things Hoosier. Revered by his family, Cecil was the patriarch of five generations including his four children: daughter, Catharine Thurman Gillespie, and sons, Donald Wayne, Cecil Daniel and David Martin. He was also loving “Papa” to four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Bogus, 67, of Palmares, Costa Rica, formerly of Bedford, died of lung cancer on Sunday, Dec. 6, 2020, at his home in Costa Rica, with his wife of 32 years, Joy, at his side, after being diagnosed six months prior. Daryl was born Aug. 7, 1953, in Grand Island, Nebraska, to Lucian and Salvina (Lewandowski) Bogus and grew up on his family farm in St. Paul. After graduating from St. Paul High School in St. Paul, Nebraska, in 1971, Daryl enlisted in the United States Army, serving three years at Fort Carson in Colorado. Over the years, Daryl’s work at Con Agra and GroMaster carried him across the Midwest with his four children, Ben, Anna, Matt and Tim. He lived in Alma, Nebraska, Groton, South Dakota, Great Falls, Montana, and Marshalltown, Iowa, where he married his current wife, Joy Beth Reed, on Dec. 17, 1988. In 1991, Daryl and his family moved to Bedford, where they made their home together. It was there in 1997 while raising their family that Daryl and Joy opened the successful retail gift shop, Backyards & Gardens, located on Old U.S. 50 in Bedford. Daryl and Joy co-owned and operated the popular store for 17 years before retiring in 2013. In 2014, Daryl and Joy retired to beautiful Costa Rica, adopting the “Pura Vida” way of life. Daryl especially appreciated the “Pura Vida” sentiment — the art of living a pure, simple life with an appreciation for the little things. Daryl’s intelligence, wit, and sense of humor warmed all aspects of his life and relationships. Known for always having a good joke ready to tell and spinning a believable tale; his stories were often lovingly met with dubiously raised eyebrows, earning him the family title of “Head Story Teller.” He enjoyed reading, especially epic Westerns, writing, and tending his tropical garden. He loved to travel to different areas of Costa Rica with his wife and saw beauty in all things of nature. Daryl enjoyed walking with his wife whether through the foothills of Costa Rica on a daily basis or on the beach, especially at sunrise and sunset. He was a playful grandparent, beloved by his two young grandchildren, and delighted in creating special moments and lasting memories with them. March 04, 2021 Warren Hudson Feb. 27, 1943 — March 02, 2021 Warren Hudson, 78, of Bedford passed away on March 2, 2021 after a brief illness. He was born on February 27, 1943 in Bedford to Theodore ‘Ted’ and Rachael (Short) Hudson. He married Sandra (Sandi) Rytkonen on May 9, 1964, and she survives. Warren was a 1961 graduate of Shawswick High School and attended Porter Business College in Indianapolis. He was a member of the Indiana National Guard from 1964 to 1970 and was stationed at Ft. Knox, KY and Ft. Mead, MD. A member of the National Rural Letter Carriers Association, Warren retired in 2007 from the Post Office in Bedford after 30 years of service. Some of Warren’s favorite pastimes through the years included sitting around a campfire telling tall tales, mowing the lawn, watching baseball games, completing crossword puzzles, bird watching, and growing tomatoes. He will be remembered for his quick wit and sense of humor. She was a lifelong genealogist and said the ancestors she would like to meet the most were Jeremiah Boone and Joyce Neville. She was a lifelong Democrat, and her favorite political figure was President Lyndon B. Johnson.
