February 28, 2017 Chester ‘Chet’ Hearth April 10, 1922 — Feb. 25, 2017 Chester Hearth, 94, of Bedford, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 25, 2017, at Garden Villa, Bedford. Born April 10, 1922, in Needmore, he was the son of John and Edna (Axsom) Hearth. He married Barbara Jean Ooley on Oct.10, 1950; and she preceded him in death on March 13, 2013. Chet was a graduate of Nashville High School, Class of 1940 and attended the University of Kansas in Lawrence. He was a Veteran of the United States Army, serving in World War II and a member of the Field Artillery, Liaison Agent 761. He owned the Aetna/Ashland Station in Oolitic and also worked in maintenance at North Lawrence Community Schools for 20 years before retiring in 1984. Surviving are two daughters, Marcia (Jerry) Barnes of Globe, Ariz., and Anna (Clarice Rising) Hearth of Asheboro, N.C.; three grandsons, Jeremy (Jessica) Barnes of Phoenix, Ariz., Matthew Barnes of Seattle, Wash., and Kevin Henderson of Asheboro, N.C.; great-grandchildren, Jordan and Lucy Barnes and Bradley Henderson; one brother, Clovis Hearth of Heltonville; beloved adopted daughter, Elizabeth Wright of Asheboro, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Barbara Jean; one son, Brad Hearth; and one brother, Francis Hearth. Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 2, at Pleasant Run Cemetery with Ken Landes officiating. Roll, 54, of Bedford, died at 7:10 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 26, 2017, at the home of her brother and sister-in-law. Born Jan. 11, 1963, in Bedford, she was the daughter of Richard Roll and Eileen (Smith) Bartley. She was a graduate of Mitchell High School with the Class of 1981. She was the manager for the Priceless IGA Store in Bedford for many years. Survivors include her mother and stepfather, Eileen and Eddie Bartley of Springville; three brothers, Richard Roll and wife Heike, of Phoenix, Ariz., Ronald Roll and wife Linda and David Roll and wife, Amy, all of Bedford; a niece and nephew, Shandel and Haven Roll, whom she raised; and many other nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her father, Richard; and her maternal and paternal grandparents. Callie (Mullins) Laney Feb. 13, 1926 — Feb. 25, 2017 Callie Laney, age 91 of Bedford, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 25, 2017, at St. Vincent Dunn Hospital in Bedford. Born Feb. 13, 1926, in Sneedville, Tenn., she was the daughter of Eugene and Minnie (Bell) Mullins. On April 20, 1946 in Jeffersonville, she married Charles Walter Laney who passed away on Nov. 1, 1990. Callie had worked as a cook and a substitute bus driver for the Houston School and then retired from Jackson Park Nursing Home in Seymour. She enjoyed cooking and gardening and spending time with her family. Survivors include her daughter, Donna Alexander of Bedford; son, Earl Laney and fiancé Susan Heller of Norman; two grandsons, Chad Laney and Toby Laney, both of Norman; and a great-grandson, Logan Laney; one sister, Jo Ann Crowe of Jeffersonville and special friends, Daiquiri Duncan of Florida, Desiree Taves of Montana, Darla Christenberry, Duane Terry and Dave Waggoner. Callie also had several nieces and nephews who survive. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; brothers, Hubert, Clint, Earl and Willard Mullins; and sisters, Gertrude Bush, Mary Banks, Viola Sturgeon and Lucy Killey. Church, 71, passed away Thursday, Feb. 23, 2017, at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital. Born July 31, 1945, in Oakland City, he was the son of Cecil and Doris Church. He married Regina “Jean” Baker March 3, 1990. Mike was an electrical engineer and retired from Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane Division. He was a member of the Mitchell Church of Christ and was a devoted worker and treasurer of the Bread of Life Food Pantry. Mike was a “tech” person and a very loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Survivors include his wife, Jean Church of Mitchell; daughter, Amber (Scott) Gilstrap of Bedford; and grandchildren, Brandon and Ashley. His parents preceded him in death. Born Oct. 28, 1914, in Mitchell, she was the daughter of Henry and Hattie (Tincher) Tincher. She married Eugene Klingman and he preceded her in death. Martha was a homemaker and hardworking lady. She loved gardening and her roses. Survivors include her grandson, Gary Eugene (Dolores) Tincher of West Point, Ky.; and granddaughters, Vicki Lynn (Mike) Zellner of Mitchell and Rhonda Gwen Guy of Mitchell; eight great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great-grandchildren. Cathy Roll Cathy Roll, 54, of Bedford, died Sunday. Arrangements are pending at Day & Carter Mortuary in Bedford. February 26, 2017 Rev. Roger Kent Helton Nov. 30, 1947 — Feb. 23, 2017 Rev. Roger Kent Helton, age 69, of Springville, passed away unexpectedly Thursday evening, February 23, 2017. He was born in Bloomington on November 30, 1947, to Burl and Dorothy Elon Siscoe Helton. He was a 1966 graduate of Needmore High School and went on to serve in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War in the late ’60s into the early ’70s. Upon his return to the States, he enrolled in Oral Roberts University, where he received his bachelor’s degree in the mid ’70s. Roger was a pastor for over 32 years with various Baptist churches throughout southern Indiana. He served in Stanford, Unionville, Washington and Dabbne before settling in at Bethel Lane Community Holiness Church here in Bloomington. He regularly called on the residents at Garden Villa, visiting every Tuesday there, as well as preaching a service on Thursdays. He was a collector of both old and new movies, filling up numerous bookshelves with them, but his true pride and joy was his grandson David, whom he spent countless hours with. David was truly the center of Roger’s life. Roger leaves behind his sister Ramona Stone of Springville; grandson David Dodge of Bloomington; nephews and nieces Michael Stone and wife Cindy of Bedford, Thomas Stone and wife Christina, and Rodney Stone and wife Mary of Springville, Tiffany Byers and husband Devin of Bedford, Samantha Stone and companion Justin of Springville; and grand-nieces Abbie Stone and Harper Avery Byers also survive. Roger was predeceased by his parents and his brother-in-law Thomas Stone. Charles Michael Fiesel April 19, 1948 — Feb. 23, 2017 Charles Michael Fiesel, 68, of Bedford, passed away on Thursday, February 23, 2017, at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital. Born April 19, 1948, in Beech Grove, Indiana, he was the son of Charles and Opal (Lucas) Fiesel. He married Carol Kelley on May 6, 1967; and she survives. Charles attended Leatherwood Christian Church. He worked at Peerless Pump for 30 years before working for Amtrak. Surviving are his wife, Carol; one daughter, Tammy (Brent) Byrer; two grandsons, Blaine and Blaze Byrer; one nephew, J.R. (Teresa) Long; one niece, Tabatha (Keith) Bramlett; several great-nieces and great-nephews; and extended family, Ed and Pat Pagel. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Nancy Long. Moore, 94, of Bedford, died Friday, February 24, 2017, at Springhurst Healthcare in Greenfield, IN. Born March 31, 1922, in Bedford, she was the daughter of James and Stella (Thomas) Chastain. She married Merle J. Moore, and he preceded her in death. She was a homemaker and attended the Church of Christ. Moore and Merlin Moore; a brother, Fred Chastain; and a sister, Lucille Keller. Carolyn Jeanette Gaines March 15, 1939 — Feb. 23, 2017 Carolyn Jeanette Gaines, born March 15, 1939, in Bedford, Indiana, has gone to be with her Lord Jesus. She passed away at 1:05 a.m. February 23, 2017, at the IU Health Hospice House in Bloomington, IN, with her loving husband by her side. She was the daughter of Addie Clements Gaines and Ray Gaines. She was married to Daniel Hudach, who survives. She was an accountant at Northern Kentucky Area Development, Indiana University, and Public Service of Indiana. She loved golfing, flower gardening, Bible study, reading, and most of all, her family. She also loved her golf buddies, her book and Bible study sisters and her school class Golden Girls. Other survivors include her daughter, Vanessa (Larry) Hinkle, and son Jeffrey (Angie) Smith; four grandchildren, Megan, Sarah, Hannah and Emma; and her precious great-grandson, Abraham; sisters, Mary Guthrie and Betty (Tom) Gerkin; and brothers, Raymond (Geraldine) Gaines and Roland (Patsy) Gaines. She is preceded in death by her parents and sister Marjorie Wright. Jeanette was a member of the American Business Women’s Association. She was involved in starting the Center for Christian Women’s Ministry of Lawrence County. She was a board member of LIFE of Lawrence County, Indiana. She was a member of the Smithville Christian Church, where she and Dan taught and loved the children. February 25, 2017 Betty Jean (Godsey) Cummings May 2, 1950 — Feb. 24, 2017 Betty Jean (Godsey) Cummings, 66, of Bedford, died at 1:58 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 24, 2017, at Kindred Hospital Indianapolis South in Greenwood. Born May 2, 1950, in Bedford, she was the daughter of Paul Robert and Roberta Jean (Patton) Godsey. She married Mike Cummings on April 29, 1994. She had worked at General Electric and Bigfoot Convenience Store. She was a member of the Eagles Ladies Auxiliary No. 654, and a past state president of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles whose 2010-2011 state project was Riley Hospital Critical Care Transport Unit, raising $337,000 to purchase a new ambulance. Betty loved playing cards, cook-outs and being with her children. She was an avid NASCAR fan and enjoyed going to Brownstown Raceway. She was of the Protestant faith. Survivors include her husband, Mike of Bedford; two sons, Jody Dale Sullivan of Bedford and Eldon William Sullivan of Tunnelton; stepchildren, Brad Cummings and wife Carol, Jamie Cummings and wife Lori, all of Bedford, and Matt Cummings and wife Becky of Avoca; 23 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Paula Godsey Lucas and Sherri Godsey Walls, both of Bedford; a brother, Ricky Dale Godsey and wife Susie of Bedford; her mother and father-in-law, Jack and Rose Cummings of Bedford; and a brother-in-law, Terry Cummings of Bedford. Born Dec. 28, 1938, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Mervin Moffatt and Sarah (Carter) Moffatt. She married Lee Franklin Stewart on Sept. 8, 1956, in Lawrence County; he preceded her in death in 2010. She attended Madisonville Church of the Nazarene and was a former member of the Valley Mission Church of the Nazarene in Guthrie. She was a homemaker. February 24, 2017 Kenneth Lee McClure Nov. 9, 1937 — Feb. 23, 2017 Kenneth Lee McClure, 79, went to be with his heavenly Father Thursday, Feb. 23, 2017, at his residence. Born Nov. 9, 1937, in Bedford, he was the son of Russell Landis and Mary Elizabeth (Brewster) McClure. He married the love of his life, Marilyn Jo Pruett, Feb. 26, 1957. They will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary on Sunday, Feb. 26, 2017. He was a third-generation employee of the B & O Railroad, retiring with 43 years of service. Kenneth had such love for family and friends and blessed those who knew him. He coached baseball and basketball youth leagues, was a 50-year member of Mitchell Masonic Lodge No. 228 F&AM, and an active servant of the Mitchell Church of the Nazarene. His hobby of golf brought great friendships through the years. He always looked forward to the Monday morning golf scrambles at Saddlebrook Golf Club. The love and passion he had for family was so contagious. Kenny leaves behind a daughter, Debra J. (Bill) Arthur of Mitchell; son, Douglas L. (Kelly) McClure of Washington; grandchildren, Chad T. She married Kenneth Dorsett who preceded her in death. Her second marriage was to Robert Dale Slaten Oct.15, 1994, and he preceded her in death Sept. 26, 2009. Vera was a homemaker and a member of Woodville Baptist Church. He was born on Dec. 25, 1946, in Loogootee, the son of Carl Edward and Elizabeth A. (Jones) Ellett. Tony married Lorene Lynn Duncan on Oct. 6, 1979, in Bedford they were married 37 years. He worked for RCA/Thompson Company for 33 years and for Cook Incorporated in Bloomington, Indiana for over 20 years before retiring in 2016. Tony loved his horse Chulo, the outdoors, camping, music, playing guitar, sports, baseball, Indiana University basketball and football where he helped as a ticket taker. He was a great caregiver for his children, grandchildren; they were his life. He loved spending time with his family and friends. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his wife, Lori L. She passed away at 12:02 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2017, at IU Health in Bloomington. She was born in Greene County on March 11, 1933, to Joseph V. and Maude E. (Ooley) Glasgow. Anna was a business owner and servant of God. She loved painting, music, karaoke, and writing poems, but most of all her family. Survivors include three daughters, Kathy (David) Mowery, Tina (Don) Bex and Cheryl Annette (Brent) Maudlin; daughter-in-law, Karen Parker; 14 grandchildren; several great- and great-great-grandchildren; five sisters, Helen Banks, Jean (Dee) Doane, Mary Lou (Ken) Korvela, Judy Anderson and Sherry Hardin; and one brother, Bob Glasgow. Sargent, she was the younger sister of Herman, Mary and Helen and older sister to her beloved brother, James (all deceased). She is also preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Dr. James E. Hendricks. She was proud of her roots as a member of the Hatfield family. Betty was an active member of her community giving years of volunteer service with the YWCA Board of Directors and the Clearwater Community Women’s Club. Betty enjoyed many years sharing travel adventures with friends and neighbors. During retirement she and James traveled often across the U.S. and found a second home in Waynesville, N.C. They built a mountain retreat where family and friends gathered for over 20 years. She loved horses and was involved in all aspects of riding and showing horses. Pat belonged to writers groups and enjoyed writing poems, stories, and had a couple of published books. Rosemary and her husband Calvin lived in Indiana and West Virginia for about ten years and then moved to Chicago, Ill., where they worked for about 30 years. She attended Mandall Methodist Church and retired from Western Electric in Cicero, Ill. In 1981 they moved to Tunnelton. Calvin passed two years later and Rosemary went on alone until 2012 living and maintaining a 12-room house, growing a garden each year and canning many foods which she shared with others. She went to and was very active in Tunnelton Methodist Church, was a reading tutor at Bedford Public Library, she bowled twice a week on a Senior League, belonged to TOPS, and served many years on the Tunnelton Cemetery Board. In July 2012, Rosemary went to live with daughter and son-in-law in Shepherd, Texas, and then in September 2015, she went to “The Gardens”, an assisted living facility and lived out the remainder of her life. He had previously been employed at Pizza Hut and Barnes and Noble in San Diego, Calif., and Jeff’s Shoes in Bedford. He attended LARC from 2002-2016 where he enjoyed his friends and dances. He participated in Special Olympics in San Diego, and was on the 2006 Indiana Special Olympics Champion basketball team. Julius loved music and karaoke, especially Elvis, Toby Keith, and Willie Nelson. He enjoyed attending car shows, dancing, and singing karaoke at the Bedford Boat and Sportsman Club, where he was an honorary member. Julius was also a member of Dive Christian Church. New was born in Bedford, on Dec. 18, 1942, to Edith Viola New and James R. New. He had three younger sisters, Becky New, Noretta New and Mary Fan New. He was a member of the Free Methodist Church and enjoyed church camp when he was growing up. In his senior year of high school, he married Yvonne F. Oakley and they had a daughter named Christine D. New. A short time later, he moved to Columbus where he got a job at Cummins. He was an engineer for over 40 years. He later divorced Yvonne and married Linda Wright and helped her with her children, Dennis and Lee and then later divorced and a few years later he met Patty Walls who he was with for 20 years. He enjoyed being with her and he loved her kids, Angel, Serina and Tonya and their extended families. Sadly, Patty passed away in 2010. He liked to travel, visit family members and friends. He was a member of the Columbus Moose No. 398. He loved cars and attended many car shows. He loved his daughter and son-in-law, grandkids and great-grandkids. He loved life and had a big heart. The last ten months of his life were his hardest as he fell and wanted so much to walk again. Sadly, he never did. At the time of his death, he was surrounded by his daughter, his son-in-law, and best friend, Donnie Bowman at his daughter’s home at 8:59 a.m. on Feb.17, 2017. His daughter quit her job and brought him home on Sept. 8, 2016, to be his full-time caregiver. He is at peace now with God and Patty. He is not only walking but dancing in Heaven. He is rejoicing with all family members who entered before him. He was loved and will be sorely missed. Thanks to all who knew him and supported him in his life. Wilma graduated from Bedford High School. She was a member of the Apostolic Faith Assembly since 1963. She was retired from RCA and later worked at Big Lots and K-Mart. Surviving are her grandchildren, Derek Meadows, Jessica Quillen, Nicholas (Alexa) Meadows and Joseph (Brittni) Meadows; great-grandchildren, Ryley Jane, Myla and Blaise; two sisters, Phyllis (Dave) Fish and Louise Barieau; and several nieces and nephews. Robert L. Priddy April 3, 1931 — Feb. 15, 2017 Robert L. Priddy, 85, a long-time Rushville resident, passed away Feb. 15, 2017, in Greenfield. He was born April 3, 1931, in Bedford to Valeria (Day) Mason. Bob was a 1948 graduate of Bedford High School. He joined the US Army after graduating and served until 1952 during the Korean War. He married Frances Webster on Aug. 30, 1952, and she survives. Bob and Frances moved to Rushville in 1959, he spent his early life in Bedford and Kentucky. He owned and operated First Credit in Rushville since 1976. He was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church. Bob was passionate about painting, wine making, fishing, golfing, helping out “extended” family, manicuring his yard or his neighbors and above all he was a son of God. Bob was very involved with coaching and organizing various sporting events. He coached golf at Lawrence Central High School and was assistant coach at Greenfield Central High School, he coached baseball in Oaklandon and Rushville and coached basketball in Lawrence Township and at the Jordan YMCA. He helped to start the Cub League Baseball league in Rushville in 1960. He is survived by his wife, Frances and daughter, Debrya Priddy, both of Rushville; and a stepbrother, Joe (Barbara) Mason of California. Bob was preceded in death by brothers, James and Charles; a sister, Barbara Priddy; and a stepsister, Barbara Piper. Dodds June 25, 1933 — Feb. 10, 2017 Evelyn Louise Dodds passed away on Feb. 10, 2017. She was born June 25, 1933, to Roy and Nellie Hunter of Norman. She graduated from Heltonville School in 1951 and on March 23, 1951, she married her lifelong friend, Raymond Dodds Jr. Together they worked their farm in Norman and raised four children. In 1979, they relocated to Florida and worked side by side in their orange groves until retirement. The couple returned to live in Indiana in 2012. Evelyn was a Christian and enjoyed genealogy, puzzles, traveling, quilting and most of all, spending time with her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Ray and Everett Hunter; and sisters, Eva Hunter and Waneta Hunter Holland. Danny Bill Callahan Nov. 7, 1943 — Feb. 8, 2017 Retired Brigadier General Danny Bill Callahan passed away Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2017, in his home in Bloomington, Indiana. He was born in Bedford, Indiana, on Nov. 7, 1943, to Juanita Mae and William Robert Callahan. He graduated from Shawswick High School and the University of the State of New York with a bachelor of science degree in Business and Administration. Danny enlisted in the Indiana National Guard on Dec. 1, 1963. He then served the next 38 years with dedication and honor to the United States Armed Services, acquiring the rank of Brigadier General. He also served as Program Manager for the General Electric Corporation in Bloomington, Indiana, for 38 years. He had devout dedication to family, community, country and faith while achieving a long listing of unassuming accomplishments and honors including but not limited to: The Legion of Merit Award, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Indiana Distinguished Service Medal, Indiana Commendation Medal, United Way President of Monroe County, Girl Scouts of America Bloomington Tulip Trace Council President, Girls Inc. Man of the Year Award, and the Indiana Sagamore of the Wabash Award Recipient. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, and several close relatives. She had worked as a nurse on the mother-baby unit at the IU Health Bloomington Hospital and prior to that had also been a school bus driver for many years as well as worked for the welfare department. Joyce was a member of Seventh Day Adventist Church. She loved to sew, plant flowers and spend time with her family. Mary Frances loved the Lord and was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. She loved to cook, garden, read, art and be with her family. Joseph Loyd Hacker Feb. 1, 1940 — Feb. 2, 2017 Joseph Loyd Hacker, 77, of Bedford, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 2, 2017 at St. Vincent Dunn Hospital, Bedford. Born Feb. 1, 1940, in Morgan County, he was the son of Orville and Lillian (Rike) Hacker. He married Melanie Haws on Oct. 4, 1991; and she survives. He graduated from Martinsville High School, Class of 1958. Joseph was of the Christian Faith. He was a Veteran of the United States Navy. He was previously involved with the Masonic Lodge and La-Or-Ma Shrine Club, of Mitchell. He retired from NWSC Crane as Shop Supervisor in 1993, then later worked at Visteon. Surviving are his wife, Melanie, of Bedford; four sons, Kenny Hacker of Texas, Joey Hacker of Arkansas, Nicholas Hacker of Bloomington, and Jobie Hacker of Bedford; one daughter, Carolyn Hacker of Bloomington; two grandchildren, Kaysin Hacker of Bedford, and Stormy Hacker of Texas; two sisters, Loretta Hacker of Ellettsville and Rosemary (Doug) Bronstetter of Martinsville; four brothers, Fred (Elaine) Hacker, Gene (Ellen) Hacker, Bruce (Joyce) Hacker, and Randy (Tracy) Hacker, all of Martinsville. She married Wilbur E. “Bill” Rainey on June 4, 1955, and he preceded her in death on March 3, 2009. She had worked at M. Fine & Sons and was a member of Old Union Christian Church. Her life’s work was her family, gardening and cooking. Ruth Ann (Carnine) Carson Nov. 8, 1940 — Jan. 31, 2017 Ruth Ann Carson, 76, Bedford, formerly of Indianapolis, passed away Jan. 31, 2017. She was born Nov. 8, 1940, at Beech Grove, to the late Ralph E. and Alberta E. Tex Carnine. Ruth Ann married Frank E. Carson April 11, 1964, at Southport, and he survives.
