April 30, 2013 Toni L. McNabb Feb. 4, 1965 — April 29, 2013 Toni L. McNabb, 48, Mitchell, passed away at 12:22 p.m. Monday at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital. Born Feb. 4, 1965, in Scott County, she was the daughter of Charlie Lee and Mildred Olive (Broady) White. She married Donald Wilson McNabb Sept. 19, 1987. Toni had been a secretary at PC Pest Control Services and Turner Contracting Company. She was a member of the Mitchell Wesleyan Church and a 1983 graduate of Paoli High School. Surviving are her husband, Donald W. McNabb of Mitchell; daughters, Whitney Dawn (Nathan) Edmonson and Mindy Lee McNabb, all of Mitchell; her mother, Mildred White of Mitchell; sisters, Rosemary Hunsucker of Mitchell, and Carol Ann Reed of Bedford. Her father and brother, Francis Lee White, preceded her in death. Funeral service will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center with the Rev. Ella was born May 27, 1923, in Mitchell, the daughter of George and Ada (Smith) Tirey. She married Walton Allbright on Nov. 1, 1945, and he preceded her in death on March 23, 1994. She graduated from Mitchell High School, and was very active within her community and church. She was a faithful member of the Shoals United Methodist Church, the Jug Rox Grandmother’s Club, the Garden Club, and was a former member of Rebekah Lodge. She was a dedicated homemaker, and took great care in maintaining her home. Her family includes: daughters, Judy Pruett of Washington and Joy Gibson of Shoals; five grandchildren, Christopher Pruett of Evansville, Michael Gibson, Ryan Gibson, and Jamie Shaw, all of Shoals, and Chad Gibson of Evansville; eight great-grandchildren Joseph, Joshua and Phillip Pruett, Maggie and Gracie Shaw, Rylee and Reese Gibson and Kristin Norris; one great-great-granddaughter, Evelyn Sophia Pruett; brothers, Robert and Donald Tirey, both of Oolitic, and Wayne, John Henry and Larry Tirey, all of Bedford; sisters, Phyllis Tucker, Delores Grubb and Rhea Anderson, all of Bedford; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one brother, Alvy Tirey; and one sister, Mary Jane Tirey. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Queen-Lee Funeral Home in Shoals. Kidwell July 16, 1931 — April 27, 2013 Robert L. “Bird Dog” Kidwell, 81, formerly of Mitchell, passed away at 1:20 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Evansville. Born July 16, 1931, in Mitchell, he was the son of Fed and Gladys (Nugent) Kidwell. He married Marilyn Price March 24, 1976. He retired from Mitchell Transport and was a member of Mitchell Masonic Lodge No. 228 F.&A.M. and Murat Shrine of Indianapolis. Surviving are his wife, Marilyn Kidwell of Bloomington; children, Bobby Lee Kidwell of Missouri, Vicky Kidwell of Maine, Don Hollars and Michelle Taylor, both of Mitchell, and James Hollars of Bloomington; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; and a brother, Doug Kidwell of Brownstown. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Timothy Kidwell; and brother, Feddy Kidwell. Funeral service will be at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center with Pastor Becky Ryan officiating. Stewart, 102, of Ellettsville, passed away Saturday morning April 27, 2013, at Bell Trace Health and Living Center. She was born in Lawrence County, Indiana, to Remus and Lida Stewart Blackwell December 14, 1910, the third of five children. After graduating from Bedford High School in 1928, Freeda married Clarence Stewart, a public school educator. They met as members of the Guthrie Christian Church, which is located in southern Monroe County. They built a marriage/partnership of 62 years from their spiritual beginning. Freeda and Clarence moved their family to Ellettsville in 1935 when Clarence joined the faculty of Ellettsville High School. As an active and devout member of the Ellettsville United Methodist Church, Freeda served as Sunday school teacher, church historian, membership preparatory leader and officer for the Methodist Women’s Society of Christian Service. She was a longtime member of the Ellettsville chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star and past worthy matron. Freeda was always a willing volunteer and generously contributed her time and energy to the PTA, Richland-Bean Blossom Family Store and elementary school reading program. She was an active worker in the Monroe County Fall Festival, including chairwoman of the quilt show. Freeda’s professional life included sales clerk at J.C. Penney’s in Bloomington, deputy to the Monroe County Clerk and executive secretary to the Indiana University Alumni Office until her retirement in 1975. Early in their married life, during the Great Depression of the 1930s, Freeda provided additional income by raising and selling bushel baskets of pole beans and nurturing chickens that provided dozens of fresh eggs for the local grocery store. Freeda and Clarence were parents to three sons, Glen, Wallace and Paul. In 1947, the family expanded to seven when Freeda and Clarence provided a home for their niece and nephew, Barbara Blackwell Deckard and Garreth Blackwell, after both of their parents had passed away. Along with the responsibilities of parenting and the demands of her professional career, Freeda also found time to be a skilled cook, successful flower and vegetable gardener and supportive wife with their cattle business. She was famous for her pecan pie, persimmon pudding, yeast rolls, angel food cake, seasoned green beans, fried chicken and meat loaf. When Freeda became a centenarian, her family gave thanks for the accomplishments of her life and for the gift of her longevity. Freeda is survived by her son Wallace Stewart and his wife Frances Sue (Morris) of Bloomington; son Paul Stewart and his wife Barbara Ann (Lasota) of Greensboro, North Carolina; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; niece, Barbara Blackwell Deckard of Brownstown; nephew, Garreth Blackwell of Ellettsville; and brother-in-law, Carl Stewart of Bloomington. Freeda was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Glen Stewart, in 1987; husband, Clarence in 1990; sisters, Avis Prince, Eva Grace Hillenberg and Alea Younger; and a brother, Elmer Blackwell. Funeral services for Freeda will be Tuesday, April 30, 2013, at 11 a.m. in the Ellettsville First United Methodist Church. She will be laid to rest next to Clarence in the Presbyterian Cemetery in Ellettsville. Visitation will be Monday, April 29, 2013, at Allen Funeral Home, 4155 S. Pingree July 11, 1944 — April 23, 2013 Connie Sue Raines Pingree, 68, passed away at Kindred Hospital in Louisville, Ky., on Tuesday after a long illness. She was born in Bedford on July 11, 1944, the daughter of Joseph F. and Pearl M. (Clements) Raines Connie is survived by her sons, Mark Clark of McMinnville, Tenn., and Paul Clark of Cecilia, Ky.; granddaughters, Rebekah Tabor and Amber Basham; grandsons, Michael Clark, Joseph Clark and Mark Clark Jr.; seven great-grandchildren; sister, Doris Earley of Kissimmee Fla.; brothers, Doyle (Norma) Raines of Crawfordsville and Wayne (Patty) Raines of Vista Calif. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Joseph Raines Jr. and Bobby Raines; one sister, Geraldine Raines; and one granddaughter, Tishina Clark. Connie loved life, spending time with family, traveling, crocheting, playing her guitar and singing country and gospel music, and reading her Bible. Russell Tanksley June 2, 1929 — April 25, 2013 Russell “Gene” Tanksley, 83, of Mitchell, passed away Thursday evening at Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Born in Lawrence County, he was the son of Noble and Ruby (Taylor) Tanksley. He married Juanita Madge Jones June 2, 1952, and she preceded him in death Aug. 30, 2009. He retired from Regal Beloit and graduated from Mitchell High School in 1948. Gene was a member of Woodville Baptist Church. He was a U. S. Army veteran of the Korean War. Surviving are his children, Jeanne A. Smith of Palmyra, James M. Tanksley of Indianapolis, Jerry Lee Tanksley of Mitchell and Debbie Kenney of McHenry, Md.; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and brothers, Raymond Tanksley, Roger Tanksley, and Ralph Tanksley, all of Mitchell He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; brothers, Roland, Ronald, Roy K., and Rex Tanksley; and sisters, Ruth Sipes and Rowena Elrod. Clements June 8, 1926 — April 24, 2013 Wayne F. “Frank” Clements, 86, of Bedford, died Wednesday at the Johnson Christian Village in Bedford. Frank was born June 8, 1926, in Orleans, the son of Charles and Sarah West Clements. He married Dorothy Maxine Phillips on Sept. 9, 1944 and she preceded him in death on Nov. 15, 2012. He attended Orleans schools and served in the United States Army, during World War II in the Philippines. He retired from General Motors in 1992. He had previously worked for 28 years at the former Wheeler Foutch in Orleans and in Bedford and had been the deputy chief of the Orleans Police Department in the 1950s. He was a member of the 39th Street Christian Church in Bedford, where he served as an elder. He had been an elder for many years in the Orleans Christian Church, before moving his membership to Bedford. He is survived by his daughter, Connie Jentes of Woodlawn, Tenn.; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a brother, John Clements of New Jersey. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy; a daughter, Frankie Jean; three brothers; and four sisters. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. on Monday at the Ochs-Tetrick Funeral Home in Orleans with Frank Johnson and Russell Johnson officiating. Phillip Hillenburg Nov. 18, 1935 — April 24, 2013 Phillip Lee Hillenburg, 77, of Heltonville passed away Wednesday, April 24, 2013 at his residence surrounded by his family. Born November 18, 1935 in Monroe County, he was the son of Gilbert Franklin and Mable Pearl (Axsom) Hillenburg. Phillip retired as a custodian from Indiana University after 33 years of service. He was a member of the Burgoon Baptist Church, a former member of the Advisory Board of Polk Township and a former member of the Board of Trustees at Old Chapel Hill Church. Phillip was a loving husband, father and grandfather who enjoyed farming. Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Margie (Smith) Hillenburg, three sons, David Hillenburg (Karen) of Norman, Dwayne Hillenburg (Lisa), Dennis Hillenburg (Tricia) all of Bedford, four grandchildren, Andrew (Jackie), Becca, Jacobi and Jareb Hillenburg, one great-grandson, Dean Hillenburg, four sisters, Virginia Atchley, Joann Haywood, Diane Hillenburg, Jeanette Payton and one brother, Larry Hillenburg. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Harriett Mullis and three brothers, Keith, Harry and Robert Hillenburg. Morrison Oct. 24, 1914 — April 24, 2013 Charles H. “Charlie” Morrison, 98, formerly of Norman, died at 7:03 p.m. on Wednesday at Hoosier Christian Village in Brownstown. Born Oct. 24, 1914, in Norman, he was the son of Hugh and Josie (Baker) Morrison. He owned and operated sawmills and farms. He also worked as a welder for Brunner Engineering. He was a graduate of Clearspring High School. He was a World War II Army Veteran and Purple Heart recipient. Surviving are his two sisters, Nora Roush and Minnie Duncan, both of Norman; one brother, Harrell Morrison of Norman; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Millard Morrison and James “Albert” Morrison; and three sisters, Alice Sprankle, Edna Sovern, and Inez Speer. April 25, 2013 Lewellyn Pratt Sept. 12, 1929 — April 21, 2013 Lewellyn H. “Lew” Pratt, 83, of Bloomington, passed away Sunday at his residence. Born Sept. 12, 1929, in Newark, N.J., he was the son of Hastings B. Pratt and Constance (Cotter) VanWinkle. Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Donna F. Pratt; children, C. Melinda Wedemeyer of Heath, Ohio, L. Marie Murphy (John), Kelly L. Lambe (Alan), H. Bowen Pratt (Lisa), Robert D. Scott (Tina), N. Judd Pratt, all of Bloomington; and 14 granchildren. Lew died peacefully at home surrounded by his wife and family. The memorial service will be a private family gathering to be determined at a later date. Payton April 16, 1966 — April 18, 2013 Carolyn Dawn Payton passed away April 18. She was preceded in death by her mother, Joanne Payton. April 24, 2013 Helen Reynolds March 1, 1924 — April 23, 2013 Helen L. Reynolds, 89, of Bedford, died at 4:20 a.m. on Tuesday at StoneBridge Health Campus. Born March 1, 1924, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Clarence and Pearl (Peyton) McCain. She married James L. Reynolds on July 24, 1942, and he preceded her in death. She graduated from Shawswick High School with the Class of 1942. She was a meat cutter for the Kroger Co. and was a member of the Englewood Baptist Church. She enjoyed traveling, was an avid quilter and loved to crochet. Survivors include two daughters, Suzan Maddox and husband Ronnie of Bedford, and Dian Miller and husband Darrell of Shepherdsville, Ky.; two stepgrandchilden, Dana Dolan and Michael Miller, both of Shepherdsville, Ky.; a granddaughter-in-law Debbie Terrell of Bedford; one great-granddaughter, Samantha Terrell; three step-great-grandchildren, Makenzie Miller and Callon and Clayton Willett of Shepherdsville, Ky.; a sister, Barbara Payton of Bedford; and two brothers, Bob McCain of Bedford and Kenneth McCain of Columbus. Cazee Nov. 9, 1930 — April 22, 2013 Ruth J. (Sipes) Cazee, 83, of Bedford, died at 4:15 p.m. on Monday at Johnson’s Christian Village in Fayetteville. Born Nov. 9, 1930. in Bedford, she was the daughter of Everett E. and Winnie Lorraine (Bridges) Sipes. She married Charles Cazee on July 15, 1950, and he preceded her in death on April 12, 2010. She retired in 1992 after working as a medical assistant for 39 years. She was employed by Dr. Donald M. Kerr from 1952-1987 and later worked for Dr. Bruce and Dr. Guy Waldo until her retirement. She attended the Free Methodist Church and enjoyed crocheting and gardening. Survivors include a niece, Sheri Zuker and husband Larry of Evanston, Ill.; a nephew, Tony Sipes of Bloomington; and several other nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, David R Cazee; a brother, Robert Sipes; four half brothers, Paul, Ralph, Clyde and Everett Sipes; a half sister, Marie Sipes Moore. Burgess March 19, 1948 — April 22, 2013 Marie Ann Burgess, 65, of Brownstown, passed away at 12:15 a.m. on Monday at her home. Born March 19, 1948, in Bedford, to William Glenn and Elizabeth Marie Wray Duncan, she was a 1965 graduate of Mitchell High School. She married Dr. William E. Burgess on Feb. 1, 1966, while attending IU. Marie worked with her husband to begin his dental practice in Seymour, while raising four children. She was his dental assistant and office manager. Marie had a passion for serving her family, church, community and others in the world. She supported the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, following her daughter’s diagnosis. She was co-founder of Habitat for Humanity of Jackson County, Inc; was a charter member of LaSertoma and delivered Meals on Wheels. Marie loved quilting, flowers, reading and antique collecting. She was a 4-H leader, a member of the All Seasons Garden Club, Phi Beta Psi, Small Town Quilters and owned Remember When Antiques. She was an active member of Central Christian Church in Seymour. She is survived by her husband, Bill; children, David W. (Melanie) Burgess, Debra M. (Jeff) Grant, Wesley R. (Bridget) Burgess and Todd C. (Tammy) Burgess; her mother; three sisters, Barbara (Randy) Powell, Pamela (Jerry) Freeman and Nancy Ryan; brother, William Doyle (Dianna) Duncan; and nine grandchildren. Her father and grandparents, William and Vay Duncan, Doyle Wray, and Ralph and Fern Wray Mikels preceded her in death. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Central Christian Church in Seymour. Born in Bedford, Helen worked as a manager with Sears for 30 years. She was a member of Anthony Wayne First Church of God and the Odd Couples square dancing club. She enjoyed playing cards and square dancing. Surviving are her sons, Michael Bennett of Fort Wayne and James D (Jean) Bennett of Kent, Wash.; daughter, Connie Bennett of Huntingburg; sister, Phyllis Allen of Bedford; three grandchildren; and over 50 nieces and nephews around the world. Helen was preceded in death by her husband and dance partner, Claude L. Bennett; parents Alva and Kate Smith, grandson, Scott Milne, brothers, John Smith and E. Johnnie was an Army veteran of World War II, where he served in the Pacific Theatre. Johnnie then worked as a machine operator, working at General Electric and Sarkes Tarzian before spending over 40 years at Indiana University as the machine shop supervisor for the Psychology Department. He was also the head usher at Assembly Hall for more than 40 years for IU basketball and was an avid fan as well. He was a member of Sherwood Oaks Christian Church and the American Legion Post #18. He was preceded in death by his parents Ott and Ada Garrison. He was a member of River’s Edge Fellowship Church in Bedford. Mr. Garrison owned and successfully worked a farm near Mitchell for years. He had a great love for travel and being with friends. Over the last 30 years he saw a great deal of the world. He traveled extensively throughout Europe. He also traveled to Northern Africa, specifically to Morocco and Egypt, and to Israel, Jordan and Turkey many times. He journeyed to Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand. Johnson Joy Merla (Jacobs) Johnson of Indianapolis, died peacefully on March 29 at the age of 90. She is survived by her brother, David A. Barbara Ann Sparkes Jan. 26, 1926—March 31, 2013 Musician Barbara Ann (Huey) Sparkes, 87, Birmingham, Ala., died March 31. Born on Jan. 24, 1926, in Indianapolis, to Helen and Gerald Huey, Mrs. Sparkes was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Julian Sparkes; a sister, Sue Huey Smith; children, Marla Hiles, Lance Hiles, and Kelly Sparkes; stepdaughters, Judy Kennady and Kathy Greene; and a grandchild, Ana-Kelly Jemison Lacy. Mrs. Sparkes was a piano and organ player with more than 60 years of professional experience. Her music focused on the great American Songbook. At 17, during World War II, she joined the USO Camp Shows as an accordionist, first traveling with a Tabloid Troupe across the U.S., then later to France and Germany. Mrs. Sparkes was the focus of the story “Two Suitcases and an Accordion: Traveling with the USO Camp Shows,” created and performed with Birmingham actress Dolores Hydock beginning in 2009. She moved to Birmingham in 2001. In 2002, she was a featured artist in a National Endowment for the Arts-funded performance of Birmingham’s best jazz pianists. Born July 24, 1925, in Bedford, he was the son of Lee Edgar and Dorothy Bessie (Newkirk) Quackenbush. He was married to Marjorie Maxine (Franklin) Quackenbush for more than 60 years. In 1948 he started Jerry’s Confectionery. He later took over his father’s business, the ‘R’ Street Grocery, owning and managing it for more than 43 years. He retired in 1989. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving honorably during World War II at D-Day and with the Marines at the invasion of Okinawa, Japan. He was a life-time member of Elks Lodge No. 826 and Gillen Post No. 33 American Legion. He was a sports enthusiast — part of Bedford’s 1943 final four basketball team, an avid golfer at Otis Park Golf Club and a life-long fan of the Cincinnati Reds baseball team. He was active in the Bedford community — a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Chamber of Commerce and past president of the Bedford Redevelopment Commission under Mayor Hauck. From 1957-1962, he was Executive Vice President and President/CEO of Martin County Bank in Shoals. From 1963-1970, he was partner and Vice President of Knoll Machinery Co. in Jasper. From 1970 until he retirement, he was a salesman for various car dealerships in Southern Indiana. His years of service involved teaching and coaching, as well as serving in the administrative capacity of principal and superintendent at Worthington and Superintendent of the White River Valley School Corporation. He was also a member of the Indiana Association of Public School Superintendents, Southern Indiana Superintendents Club, Twin Rivers Vocational Area board, Governing Board of West Central Indiana Educational Service Center, Community Alliance to Promote Education, Executive Board of the Greene-Sullivan Special Education Corporation and the Elks Club of Linton. Steve’s hard work and dedication to education was recognized on a state-wide level with the presentation of two of the highest awards in education. He was presented the Sagamore of the Wabash Award in 2004 by the Indiana State Governor. In that same year he was given the Bell Ringer Award by the Indiana Department of Education. He dedicated his life to education and students. Steve was as passionate about life as he was about education. He loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing and finding mushrooms. He often said eating fried mushrooms and crappie was one of life’s little pleasures. He loved blues and country music. One could catch him in his garage listening to Slim Harpo and Waylon Jennings, and if you were lucky, you would witness a bad impression of the two-step shuffle. Behind every great man is a great woman … Steve loved his wife, Joyce for 52 years, and they celebrated their 50th anniversary at the their lakeside campground with family and friends. She married her high school sweetheart, Bill Johnson, on July 18, 1975, and he survives. She was a faithful wife, homemaker, wonderful mother and enjoyed being a nanny to her grandchildren. As a young mother, she home schooled her children as they traveled and evangelized throughout the country. She and Bill were pastors of the Hilltop Pentecostal Church in Avoca for 22 years. She was known to be friendly, open and loving to all whom she met. Dale Gould Jan. 3, 1941 — March 30, 2013 Dale Gould, 72, of Bedford died at 7:50 a.m. on Saturday at the Hospice House in Bloomington. Born Jan. 3, 1941, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Heber Ray and Hazel Louise (Pace) Gould. He married Myrna Southern on Sept. 26, 1959, and she survives. He was the manager at Hall Oil Company for 24 years and retired from Merriman Steel after 21 years. He loved hunting, fishing, NASCAR, and junkin’. Survivors include his wife Myrna of Bedford; one daughter, Teresa Spires and her husband Jerry of Bedford; one son, Loren Gould and his wife Janine of Bedford; four grandchildren, Justin (Jay) Spires of Bloomington, Jesse Spires and his wife Jeri of Bedford, Jacey Chastain and her husband Corey of Bedford, and Kali Gould of Bedford; four great-grandchildren, Kayne and Hayden Spires, and Cutler and Hunter Chastain; one brother, David Gould of Springville; and two sisters, Marilyn Borders and Norma Ann Walters, both of Bedford. Jenkins March 1, 1940 — March 29, 2013 John Dale Jenkins, 73, passed away at 5:37 a.m. Friday at Garden Villa in Bedford. Born on March 1, 1940, in Bedford, he was the son of Daniel and Norma (Reynolds) Jenkins. He retired from General Motors and was a member of UAW Local 440. John served in the U.S. Navy and was a member of the American Legion Gillen Post No. 33, Bedford Elks Lodge No. 826, Order of the Eagles in Zephyrhills, Fla., and a lifetime member of the Bedford Boat and Sportsman Club. Boyles Sept. 18, 1925 — March 30, 2013 Ruby Maude Boyles, 87, Taylorsville, Ky., formerly of Medora, died at 9:15 p.m. Saturday at Green Meadows Healthcare in Mount Washington, Ky. She was born Sept. 18, 1925, in Fort Ritner, the daughter of the late Hubert and Mary Nichols Dixon. She married Medford H. Boyles on Feb. 12, 1944, at Rivervale, and he preceded her in death on Dec. 18, 1986. She attended school at Fort Ritner for eight years, then four years of high school at Tunnelton, graduating in 1943. She and her husband operated Boyles Grocery. Her husband was postmaster at Fort Ritner and she was the assistant. On July 14, 1970, she started working at Bedford Medical Center in central supply. From July 1975 until her retirement in 1989, she was director of purchasing. She also worked at Hague Funeral Home for several years. She was a member of the Medora Christian Church. Survivors include three daughters, Sue Ann (Darrell) Todd of Taylorsville, Ky., Kaye Lynn (Huebert) Bough of Scottsboro, Ala., and Pamela Joe (Carl) Hutzler of Brownsburg; 10 grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one brother, Hubert Thomas (Kaye) Dixon of Martinsville; and three nephews, Steve Turner, Scot Turner and Billie Joe Turner.
