03/30/06

Davis – Ida P. Davis of Oolitic, IN, died Thursday, March 30, 2006, at Core Nursing and Rehab Center in Bedford. Born February 1, 1918, she was the daughter of Findley and Hattie (Mayo) Gyger. She married Fred Davis on November 7, 1934, and he survives.

Surviving with her husband are one son, Dennis L. Davis and his wife, Patty Sue, of Bedford, IN; one daughter, Patsy Lou Tincher of Indianapolis; two sisters, Loretta June Ballard of Kokomo, IN, and Mary Esther Craig and her husband Donald K. of Needmore, IN; three grandsons: Lenny Tincher, Scott Tincher, and Scott Bough; two great-grandsons; several great-great-granddaughters and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Gyger.

She was a homemaker and had worked at M. Fine & Sons and NWSC Crane. She was a member of Gulletts Creek Baptist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, April 3rd, at the Day & Carter Mortuary with the Revs. Lewis Williams and the Don Phillips officiating. Burial will follow in Cresthaven Memory Gardens. Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. on Sunday and from 11 a.m. Monday until the hour of service on Monday at the mortuary.

Webster – David L. Webster of Mitchell, IN, died Thursday, March 30, 2006, at the Bedford Regional Medical Center. Born June 10, 1940, in Martin County, IN, he was the son of James Denver and Berniece (Crane) Webster. He married Linda Burch and she survives.

Surviving with his wife are one son, Dusty Webster of Columbus, IN; one daughter, Jeanne Marie Webster of Columbus, IN; one sister, Emilie Padgett and her husband Arnold L. of Bloomington, IN; one niece, Lori Ellen Griffith of Charlestown, IN; and one great niece, Kyleigh Peyton Griffith of Charlestown, IN. He was preceded in death by his parents.

He was a fireman for the City of Columbus from June 15, 1971 to June 15, 2000. He was the owner of Dave's Glass. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force serving from 1959 to 1963. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 250 in Mitchell, the Bedford Masonic Lodge No. 14 F & AM and the Dover Hill United Methodist Church.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Monday, April 3rd, the Day & Carter Mortuary with the Rev. Merla Craig officiating. A committal service will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Monday at the Walnut Hill Cemetery in Odon. Military rites will be accorded at the graveside. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. on Sunday at the mortuary.

Frink – Earlene K. Frink of Bedford, IN, died Sunday, March 26, 2006, at StoneBridge Health Campus in Bedford. Born Oct. 29, 1922, in Vermillion County, IN, she was the daughter of Earl Clinton and Glady May (Bunton) Cook. She married Ralph Frink on July 30, 1943, at Clinton, IN, and he died on May 31, 2003.

Surviving are six sisters: Maxine Avenatti, Paris, IL, Clara Endicott and husband Elwood of St. Bernice, IN, Joan McBride and husband John of Bedford, IN, Betty King and husband Neil, Treemont, IL, Sharon Huffaker and Rhea Dawn Bickle, both of Rockport, IN; two brothers, Robert Cook of Bedford, IN, and Harry Cook and wife Violet of Marshall, IL. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one sister, Jean Lemen; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was a homemaker and a graduate of St. Bernice High School.

Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday at Sugar Grove Church in St. Bernice. Burial will follow in the Sugar Grove Cemetery. Friends may call from 10:30 a.m. until the time of service on Monday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of the Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home in Bedford.

Inman – Terry Inman of Bedford, IN, died Thursday, March 23, 2006, at her residence. Born January 27, 1955, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Lloyd Robert and Bernice (Grubb) Inman.

Surviving are her parents; one brother, Bob Inman and his wife, Beth; one sister, Denise Tillett and her husband, Jeff, all of Bedford, IN; nieces and nephews, Bob and Debbie Lewis, Dain and Roxanna Inman, Zach Inman, Ashlea Inman, Seth Inman, Johnathon Srygler, Terry and Kristi Srygler, Tessa Tillett, Jeffrey Tillett, Michael and Tabby Tillett, Shelly Tillett, Matt Tillett, Andrew Tillett, John Grubb, Carl Grubb; great nieces and nephews, Emilee, Hannah and Madison Lewis, Kendra Grubb, Miriah, Alexis and Eden Srygler, Nathan, Abby and Brooks Sherrill.

She was a homemaker and a graduate of St. Bernice High School.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 pm on Monday, March 27th, at the Day & Carter Mortuary with Sister Becky Ryan officiating. Burial will follow in the White River Baptist Cemetery in Buddha, Indiana. Friends may call from 10:00 am until the hour of service on Monday, March 27th at the Day & Carter Mortuary.

Nielson – Christian M. Nielsen of Bedford, IN, formerly of Scandia, MN, died Thursday, March 23, 2006, at White River Lodge in Bedford. Born Dec. 15, 1913, in Kenosha, WI, he was the son of Anton and Amalia (Olsen) Nielsen. He married Hazel S. Bohman, April 20, 1942, and she survives.

Surviving with his wife are one daughter, Marilyn D. Anderson and husband Kenneth of Bedford, IN; one son, Richard C. Nielsen and wife Denise of Elizabethton, TN; four granddaughters: Katie Nielsen El Helou of Beirut, Lebanon, Brenda Nielsen Benson of San Diego, CA, Megan Nielsen Rountree of Greenville, SC, and Joni Nielsen of Elizabethton, IN; one brother, Henry Nielsen of Sweet Home, OR; and one sister, Edith Johnson of Minneapolis, MN. He was preceded in death by one brother, John Nielsen; three sisters: Hazel Swanson, Doris Eckenroth and Mary Bybee.

He was a dairy farmer in Scandia, MN, retiring in 1985. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, a member of the Calvary Lutheran Church in Bedford and a life member of the Elim Lutheran Church in Scandia.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Calvary Lutheran Church in Bedford with the Rev. Paul Neuman officiating. Burial will follow in Elim Lutheran Cemetery in Scandia, MN. Friends may call from 5-7 p.m. at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home and from 1 p.m. Sunday until the time of the service at the church.

Chambers – Donald Gene Chambers of Williams, IN, died Wednesday, March 22, 2006, at his residence. Born January 21, 1933, in Smithville, IN, he was the son of Raymond and Catherine (Burris) Chambers. He married Goldie Gardner November 4, 1994, and she survives.

Surviving with his wife are one son, Timothy Chambers of Bloomington, IN; one daughter, Donna Ogden of Greenwood, IN; seven stepchildren; one brother, Dana Chambers of, Solsberry, IN; one sister, Norma Wright of Mt. Juliet, TN; 3 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; and several step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Monty Chambers, Jerry Joe Chambers, and twin, Ronald Chambers; two sisters, Patty Nolin, and Janice Chambers; and a grandson, Damon Chambers.

He retired from Ralph Rogers Group and was a U. S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of Old Union Christian Church.

Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, March 25th, at Chastain Funeral Home. Burial will be in Old Union Cemetery with graveside military honors accorded by Cecil C. Martin American Legion Post No. 250 and Marvin R. Davis Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9107. Friends may call from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Friday and from 11:00 a.m. until the service time Saturday at the funeral home.

Fender – James O. Fender of Mitchell, IN, died Wednesday at Bloomington Hospital. Born Jan. 3, 1938, at Chapel Hill, he was the son of Ellsworth and Ila (Cracraft) Fender. He married Mary A. Milligan on Oct. 4, 1975, and she survives.

Surviving with the wife, Mary, of Mitchell are his mother, Ila Fender, Bloomington; two sons: Kevin A. Fender and Jeff A. Fender, both of Chapel Hill; one brother, Fred Fender, Chapel Hill; two sisters: Annabelle Robinson and Janet Sue Prince, both of Bloomington; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father and one brother, Ted Fender.

He retired from RCA in Bloomington after 33 years and he loved to play cards.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 25th, at the Haverly Mortuary in Mitchell with the Rev. Doyle Henderson officiating. Burial will be in Hickory Grove Cemetery in Norman. Friends may call from 3-8 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m. until the service on Saturday at the mortuary.

Allen – Paul G. Allen of Mitchell, IN, died Monday, March 20, 2006, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born April 13, 1917, in Orange County, IN, he was the son of Chester and Stella (Robbins) Allen. He married Orpha Kimble November 5, 1938, and she died October 18, 1973. He then married Ruth Evelyn (Starr) Taylor April 15, 1977, and she died February 29, 1996.

Survivng are children: Brenda L. Curry of Medora, IN, Joyce K. Speer of Mitchell, IN, Paula D. Carpenter of Whiteland, IN, Richard G. Allen of Springville, IN, and Charles D. Allen of Bedford, IN; 10 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by both wives; and brothers, Elmer, Clarence, Hayden, and Leo Allen.

He was superintendent for the City of Mitchell Water Department for many years and was of the protestant faith. He was was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of Cecil C. Martin American Legion Post No. 250.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 23rd, at Chastain Funeral Home with Brother Eugene Pruett officiating. Burial will be in Liberty Christian Cemetery with military honors accorded by Cecil C. Martin American Legion Post No. 250 and Marvin R. Davis Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9107. Friends may call from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday and from 9:30 a.m. until the service on Thursday at the funeral home.

Lake – Lucille Pearl Lake of Bedford, IN, died Monday, March 20, 2006. at the Bedford Regional Medical Center. Born June 12, 1915, in Shoals, IN, she was the daughter of Claude and Nellie (Blake) Parker. She married Opal Lake on December 18, 1933, and he died in 1991.

Surviving are eight daughters: Marilyn Joyce Baker of Springville, IN, Evelyn Morgan and her husband, Gene of Bloomington, IN, Ruby Swartz and her husband, Kenneth of Terre Haute, IN, Pamela Quisenberry of Bloomington, IN, Katherine Terry and her husband, Robert of Williams, IN, Karen Sue Speer and her husband, Joe of Bedford, IN, Theresa McGuire and her husband, Jim of Bedford, IN, Paula Ford and her husband, Ryan of Brookston, IN; two sons, Robert Lake of Bedford, IN, and Jerry Lake and his wife, Avonelle of Mitchell, IN; thirty-seven grandchildren; sixty-one great-grandchildren; one sister, Doris Martin of Bedford, IN; four great-great-grandchildren; several step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two daughters, Debbie and Kay Lake; one son, Eugene Lake; one son-in-law, Gerald Baker; four brothers: Kenneth, Cecil, Claude and Ray Parker; one sister, Helen Hazel and three great-grandchildren.

She was a mother, homemaker and a member of the Fayetteville Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be at 1:00 pm on Thursday, March 23rd at the Fayettevelle Baptist Church with Pastor Kenneth Walden officiating. Burial will follow in the Hilltop Cemetery in Avoca. Hall – Howard Hall of Indianapolis, IN, died Friday, March 17, 2006 at Cambridge Manor in Indianapolis. Born on August 9, 1923, he was the son of William Arthur Hall and Emma B. (Scofield) Hall. He married Alberta C. Bolding on September 28, 1949 and she died March 13, 2000.

Surviving are one daughter, Linda Harris of Indianapolis; two sons, Timothy Hall and his wife, Janet of Indianapolis and Stephen Hall and his wife, Patricia of Atlanta, GA; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Clara Raborn of Seymour, IN; two brothers, Clarence and Lester Hall, both of Bedford; He was preceded in death by his wife; six sisters: Helen Baker, Altha, Ethel Miller, Edith Houser, Gladys and Wilma Armstrong; and two brothers, Lawrence and Everett.

He worked for General Motors in Indianapolis retiring in 1978 and was a veteran of W.W. II serving in the Air Force as an ordnance technician on fighter planes in the European Theater.

Funeral services will be at 1:00 pm on Monday, March 20th, at Day & Carter Mortuary with Johnny Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Dive Cemetery. Friends may call from 12:00 noon until the hour of service on Monday at the Day & Carter Mortuary.

Inman – James Inman of Charlotte, NC, formerly of Bedford, IN, died Friday, March 17, 2006 at the Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte, NC. Born June 25, 1940 in Martin County, IN, he was the son of Forest and Dorothy (Owens) Inman.

Surviving are one son, Randy Inman and his wife, Sue Ann of Westfield, IN; one sister, Joyce Martin and her husband, Padge, of Bloomington, IN; two grandchildren, Nick & Daniel “Sparky” Inman, both of Westfield, IN. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Bill Inman.

He was a supervisor at NWSC CRANE.

Graveside services will be conducted at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, March 22rd at the Owensburg Cemetery with Bro. Eddie Owens officiating. Friends may call from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Tuesday, March 21st at the Day & Carter Mortuary.

Scott – Kenneth Larry “Tookie” Scott of Ocala, FL, formerly of Bedford, IN, died Thursday, March 16, 2006, at his home in Florida. Born April 25, 1938, in Bedford, IN, he was the son of Kenneth and Mary (Lemons) Scott.

Surviving are one son, Jerry W. Scott, a musician of Studio City, CA; two stepchildren, Marcy Jones of Ocala, FL, and Chris Jones of Bedford, IN; one brother, Gerald Scott of San Diego, CA; four granddaughters: Brooke Jones and Cassie Scott, both of Ocala, FL, and Amber Bubalo and Tiffany Scott, both of Bedford, IN; three great-granddaughters, Savannah, Mackenzie and Luca; and one great-grandson, Keaton Kimberly, all of Bedford, IN. He was preceded in death by two sons, Sam and Mike Scott.

He was a car salesman and retired due to multiple back injuries in 1978.

Funeral services will be at 7 p.m. Sunday, March 19th, at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home in Bedford. Friends may call from 2-7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Mowery – Robert M. Mowery of Bedford, IN, died Wednesday, March 15, 2006, at the Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born January 17, 1923, in Bedford, IN, he was the son of George and Autie (Trueblood) Mowery. He married Lois Blackwell and she died in 1975. He later married Helen “Suzi” Fiddler and she survives.

Surviving with his wife are step-children, Bill Woody and his wife, Robin of Tennessee; Jim Woody, Joni Sue Ryan and her husband, Matt, all of Bedford; a daughter-in-law, Sheila Mowery of Mitchell, IN; a god-child, Jessica Hudson and her husband, Jayson of Bedford, IN; eight grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife; one sister, Mary Alice Stultz; one son, Richard Mowery; two brothers, Howard (in infancy) and Harold; and his god-child, Vicki Flynn.

He retired as a detective for the Bedford Police Department and had served on the Indiana School Bus Commission. He was a veteran of WW II serving with the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Murat Shine, F.O.P., Masonic Lodge #14 F & AM, Elks Club, Gillen Post #33 American Legion and a life-long member of the Bedford Boat & Sportsmans Club. Bob was blessed with many children, grandchildren and god-children.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 am on Saturday, March 18th from the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Travis Inman officiating. Entombment will follow at Cresthaven Memory Gardens with graveside military rites accorded by members of Gillen Post #33 American Legion.. Friends may call from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Friday at the Day & Carter Mortuary. A Masonic service will be conducted at 7:00 pm on Friday evening.

Terry – James Leroy "Jim" Terry of Mitchell, IN, died Wednesday, March 15, 2006, at Mitchell Manor Living and Rehabilitation Center. Born February 26, 1943, in Mitchell, IN, he was the son of Elmer and Edith (King) Terry.

Surviving are five brothers: Ralph William Terry, Thomas Lee Terry, Kenneth D. Terry, and Jack L. Terry, all of Bedford, IN, and Raymond Menlo Terry of Martinsville, IN; and two sisters, Shirley Ann Lewis of French Lick, IN, and Marilyn Sue "Susie" Taylor of Mitchell, IN. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Robert Eugene Terry; and one sister, Mary Ann Terry.

He graduated from Mitchell High School in 1961 and had been a bartender at Zeek's Restaurant and Bar in Mitchell.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday, March 17th, at Chastain Funeral Home with Brother Tom Bostic officiating. Burial will be in Mitchell Cemetery. Friends may call from 5:00-8:00 p.m.Thursday and from 8:30 a.m. until the service on Friday at the funeral home.

Beavers – Juanita L. Beavers of Bedford, IN, died Tuesday, March 14, 2006, at Mitchell Manor Living and Rehabilitation Center in Mitchell. Born Nov. 2, 1922, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Edward and Ruth (Hawkins) Robbins. She married Thurman Beavers Nov. 2, 1938, in Bedford, and he preceded her in death.

Surviving are one son, Henry Beavers and wife, Marlene, of Tunnelton, IN; 12 daughters: Wanda Hash and husband Donald of Bloomington, IN, Katie Nicholson and husband Gregory of Salem, IN, Wilma Smith and husband Leland, Betty Cochrane and husband Scott and Barbara Lambert and husband Dean, Rita Reynolds and husband Tony all of Medora, IN; Jenny Goens and husband Charles of Tunnelton, IN, Sarah Ritter and husband Phillip of Bedford, IN, Iva Tincher and husband Don of Shoals, IN, Lecia Sturgill and husband Steve, Sherry Myers and husband Brad, Alice Thompson and husband Tim, all of Leesville, IN; 34 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and one brother, Bill Robbins and wife Delores of Bloomington. She was preceded in death by her husband; two brothers: Leathel and Bob Robbins and six grandchildren.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Fort Ritner United Methodist Church.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, March 17th, at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home in Bedford. Burial will be in Dixon Chapel Cemetery. Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Fort Ritner United Methodist Church.

Fuller – William Tyrus Fuller of Heltonville, IN, died Monday at StoneBridge Health Campus in Bedford. Born in Lawrence County, IN, on November 10, 1916, he was the son of John D. and Georgia M. (Mathieu) Fuller. He was married in early life to Louise Mulkey and later to Edna M. Wykoff. He married Phyllis Lehman in 1951.

Surviving are two daughters: Suzanne McPike and husband, Joseph M.D., of Martinsville, IN, and Joan Mitchell and husband, Paul, of Bedford, IN; five grandchildren: Tyrus Mathews and wife, Deedra, of Heltonville, IN, Tracy Mathews-Stidam of Bedford, IN, Joseph McPike II and wife Lori, Cynthia McPike, Catherine McPike-Schuetter and husband, David, all of Indianapolis; five great-grandchildren: Jarrid and Justin D. Mathews of Heltonville, IN, Evan Folk and Levi Stidam, both of Bedford, IN, and Megan Schuetter of Indianapolis; cousins: Anna Mae Hudson and Rosemary Quackenbush and his caregivers: Artis White, Sue Wykoff, Roger Wykoff, Gregory Berry, Brian Wolcott, Danielle Bond and Tony Birk. He was preceded in death by his wife and one brother, John Fuller, who died in infancy.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home with the Rev. James Stevens officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery. Turner – Anna Mae Turner of Mitchell, IN, died Saturday, March 11, 2006, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born Jan. 23, 1933, in Seymour, IN, she was the daughter of Walter and Maggie (Moore) Treadway. She married Ralph Turner Sr. on June 8, 1951, and he survives.

Surviving with her husband are three sons: Ralph Turner Jr. of Lawrenceport, IN; Allen Turner of Mitchell, IN, and Rick Turner of Campbellsburg, IN; two daughters: Regina Tillette, Tunnelton, IN, and Patricia Genever of French Lick, IN; one sister, Fletie Turner of Medora, IN; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, John Treadway; one half-sister, Mary Kent; and one grandson, Jamie Turner.

She retired from Ted's Restaurant in Mitchell and was a member of the Salvation Army.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 15th, at Haverly Mortuary with Mayor Morris “Butch” Chastain officiating. Burial will follow in Lawrenceport Cemetery. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday and from 8 a.m. until the time of service on Wednesday at the mortuary.

Smith – Steve W. Smith of Williams, IN, died Wednesday, March 8, 2006 at his residence. Born August 16, 1951, in Bloomington, IN, he was the son of Delbert and Zalaya (Kinser) Smith. He married Liz Eagan on May 28, 1971 and she survives.

Surviving with his wife are one son, Tim Smith and his wife, Brandi, of Williams, IN; one daughter, Heather Dugger of Williams, IN; three granddaughters: Marissa Smith, Alyssa Dugger and Jayda (Jaydabug) Smith; one grandson, Jayce Mikels; five sisters: Bonnie Sykes and her husband, Charlie of Bedford, IN, Patty Eads and her husband, Ralph, of Heltonville, IN, Gloria Smith and her husband, Tom of Heltonville, IN, his twin sister, Susan Sowders and her husband, Charles of Bedford, IN, Trish Smith and her husband, Russell (Cutty) of Bedford, IN; two brothers, Don Smith of Bedford and Kevin Smith of Heltonville, IN; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Linda Kay Smith; two brothers, Pete and Fred Smith.

He was employed by the City of Bedford Street Department and a member of Old Union Christian Church.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 am on Friday, March 10th, at the Day & Carter Mortuary with Mike Holsapple officiating. Burial will follow in the Old Union Church Cemetery. Goode – Diana D. Goode of Crane, IN, died Monday, March 7, 2006, at her residence. Born December 21, 1948, in Terre Haute, IN, she was the daughter of Albert and Margaret (Adams) Pitts. She married Jim Goode on November 17, 1970, and he survives.

Surviving with her husband are two sons, Andrew Goode and his wife, Trudy of Louisiana and James Goode of Rockville, IN; one grandson, Nick Goode of Louisiana; one sister, Mary Lou Semroska and her husband, Edward of Omaha, NE; one brother, Charles Engle of Oden, IN. She was preceded in death by her parents and two sons, Micky & Joey Goode.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 am on Monday, March 13th, at the Englewood Baptist Church with Pastor David Ferry officiating. Cremation will follow. Friends may call from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm on Sunday at the Day & Carter Mortuary and from 9:00 am until the hour of service on Monday at the Englewood Baptist Church.

Gerkin – William L. "Bill" Gerkin of Washington, IN, formerly of Mitchell, IN, died Sunday, March 5, 2006, at Herman Memorial Hospital, Houston, TX. Born April 30, 1932, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of William Lawrence and Thelma Mae (Clouse) Gerkin, Sr. He married Wanda June Clouse October 13, 1950, and she survives.

Surviving with his wife are one son, William Scott Gerkin and his wife, Sharon, of Springville, IN; two daughters, Bilanda Jean Gerkin and Sherry Ann Theine and husband, Andy, all of Washington, IN; three brothers: John Gerkin of Harker Heights, TX, Norman Gerkin, of Montgomery, IN, and Ronald Gerkin of Bedford, IN; and grandchildren: Hannah, Sarah, Daniel, and Samantha. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Bernard Gerkin; and grandson, Seth.

He was a U. S. Army veteran of the Korean War and a member of Cecil C. Martin American Legion Post No 250. He was a heavy equipment operator for B&LS Construction and Ralph Rogers Group, and a member of Grace Baptist Church.

Funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 10, in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home with Rev. Louis Showers, Rev. Jeff Jones, and Rev. Jolly Moody officiating. Burial will be in Mitchell Cemetery with military honors accorded by Cecil C. Martin American Legion Post No. 250 and Marvin R. Davis Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9107.

Whitted – Donald J. Whitted of Bedford, IN, died March 3, 2006, at Bloomington Hospital. Born on June 29, 1957, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of David Whitted and Betty L. (Ford) Whitted. He married Linda K. Black on August 22, 1975 and she survives.

Surviving with his wife are three daughters: Jessica Carr and her husband, Scott of Orleans, IN; Jennifer Lafond and her husband, Kiley of Aurora, IL; Jaime Fischer and her husband, John of Avoca, IN; four grandchildren: Maille Lafond; Layla and Lillian Fischer and Samuel Carr; several aunts and uncles. He was preceded in death by one brother; Michael Whitted; and his grandparents; Stanley and Delphia Whitted.

He was a die setter for General Motors and was of Baptist faith having been a member of the Springville Community Church.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. on Tuesday, March 7th, at Day & Carter Mortuary with Brother Tom East officiating. Burial will follow in Beech Grove Cemetery. Friends may call from 1-8 p.m. on Monday, March 6th, and from noon until the service time Tuesday at the Day & Carter Mortuary.

Smith – Perry Kirk Smith of Bedford, IN, died Thursday, March 2, 2006, at his residence. Born February 16, 1962, in Bedford, IN, he was the son of Warren L. and Janet M. (Kirk) Smith. A life-long resident of Bedford, he lived at Res-Care group home the last twenty years of his life.

Surviving are his parents, of Bedford, IN; one sister, Polly O’Neal; one niece, Kylie O’Neal; one nephew, Tyler O’Neal all of Freemont, OH; his maternal grandmother, Louise Kirk of Bloomington; many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Otho and Addie Smith and his paternal grandfather, Earl Kirk.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 pm on Monday, March 6th, at the Day & Carter Mortuary. Friends may call from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Sunday at the Day & Carter Mortuary. The family asks that friends consider memorial contributions be made to the Leukemia Assoc. or Hoosier Uplands Hospice.

Simons – George Raymond Simons, 82, Mitchell, formerly of Georgetown, IL, died Thursday, March 2, 2006, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born August 12, 1923, in Henderson, KY, he was the son of William Henry and Katie P. (Hardin) Simons. He married Wanda Lee Cowell October 13, 1945, and she survives.

Surviving with his wife are one son, George Raymond Simons II and his wife, Sharon, of Mitchell, IN; one daughter, Caroline Dell McShane and her husband, Jim, of Scottsdale, AZ; one brother, Harold E. Simons, of Henderson, KY; one sister, Wanda L. Watkins, of Henderson, KY; grandchildren: Chad Cord, Shannon Wood, Jessica Kearsey, and George Raymond Simons III; and 9 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Willis Almon Simons

He retired from Tee-Pak in Danville, IL, and was a U. S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, receiving three Bronze Service Stars and Air Medal with five Oak Leaf Clusters. He was a member of the Cecil C. Martin American Legion Post No. 250 and a lifetime member of the Danville, IL Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a member of the Mitchell First Baptist Church, and the Masonic Lodge in Georgetown, Illinois.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, March 5th, in the First Baptist Church with Rev. Bill Graham officiating. Burial will be in Mitchell Cemetery with military honors accorded by Cecil C. Martin American Legion Post No. 250 and Marvin R. Davis Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9107. Friends may call from 4:30-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Chastain Funeral Home and from 1:00 p.m. until the service on Sunday at the church. Memorial gifts may be made to First Baptist Church Deacons Fund

Southern – Barbara Southern of Bedford, IN, died Wednesday, March 1, 2006, at the I.U. Medical Center in Indianapolis. Born April 13, 1929, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Raymond and Eva (Anderson) Butcher. She married Norman Southern and he died on Jan. 5, 1995.

Surviving are several nieces and nephews: Diana Walton of Oolitic, IN, Larry Southern, of Williams, IN, Myrna Kay Gould of Bedford, IN, David Southern of Bedford, IN, Connie Baldwin of Bedford, IN, Colby Southern of Bedford, IN, Tami Sargent of Bedford, IN, Lisa Cummings of Bedford, IN, and Ron Covey, Douglas Island, Alaska; and three cousins, Wynn Adams and Cam Anderson, both of Bedford, IN, and Monte Anderson, Oolitic, IN. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

She worked many years as a secretary at Oolitic High School and also at Englewood School, where her husband, Norman, was principal. She was also drill team coach at Englewood School. She was a 1947 graduate of Oolitic High School and also attended Indiana University. She was of the Christian faith. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, March 3rd, at Cresthaven Funeral Home in Bedford with Bro. Cam Anderson officiating. Burial will follow in Cresthaven Memory Gardens.
