Ruth M. Fye
July 24, 1925 — April 27, 2012
Ruth Montgomery Fye, 86, of Columbus, passed away at Millers Merry Manor in Hope, at 12 p.m. on Friday.
Ruth was born on July 24, 1925, in Seymour, the daughter of John and Mary Baldwin Montgomery, both have preceded her in death. On Sept. 30, 1945, in Seymour, she married Robert Louis Fye, who preceded her in death.
Ruth was a 1943 graduate of Shields High School in Seymour.
She was a homemaker raising three children in Bedford. She helped her husband Bob with many home, shop and hobby projects.
She was an active member in First Baptist churches in Bedford and Seymour.
She enjoyed living at Parkside Retirement Home and enjoyed visits, games, and walks with family members and friends. She wrote many books of family memories for her children and grandchildren.
She is survived by three children: Jon (Brenda) Fye of Clarksville, Tenn., Don (Susan) Fye of Columbus and Bonnie Fye of Bedford; six grandchildren, Shawn (Michelle) Fye, of Memphis Tenn., Stacy Fye, of Hernando, Miss., Edward Fye, of Columbus, Tony (Trisha) Fye, of Seymour, James Fye, of Abilene Texas, and Rick Fye, of Columbus, three great-grandchildren, Emma and Ella Fye, of Memphis, Tenn., and Angel Fye, of Seymour; and a sister, Martha Martin, of Williamsburg, Va.
She was also preceded in death by a granddaughter Karen Fye, and brothers David Montgomery and Paul Montgomery.
Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. on Tuesday at Burkholder Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Bruce Cochran and the Rev. Larry Tingle officiating. The graveside service will be at Riverview Cemetery following the service.
Public visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Monday and from 1 p.m. Tuesday until the service at the funeral home.

Neva June Luse

Neva June Luse, 92, 601 Oolitic Road, passed on Thursday from complications after a fall.
Born on June 13, 1919, she was the daughter of Clarence and Edith (Kirkman) May. She married Alonzo (Bill) Luse on Aug. 5, 1939. He preceded her in death on Oct. 16, 2006.
She was a 1936 graduate of Needmore High School. She graduated from Indiana University with a BS in Elementary Education and an MS in Early Childhood Education. She began her teaching career at the age of 19 serving schools in Ellettsville, Mitchell, Bedford, but mainly as a kindergarten teacher for North Lawrence Community Schools. After retiring in 1981 after 43 years of teaching, she became a realtor for Keach & Grove. She was a member and past president of Bedford Board of Realtors, member and past president of Bedford Altrusa, Exchange Club, and a past recipient of Bedford’s Book of Golden Deeds Award.
She was a member of Avoca Baptist Church where she was a church organist for over 60 years. Upon her retirements from the organ in 2008, she was awarded the Lifetime Service Award from the Bedford Baptist Association.
Active also in Indiana government, she was named Counsel to the Attorney General in 1987, and appointed by Gov. Evan Bayh as a member of the Indiana Commission for Women in 1995. In 2011, she was the recipient of the Ray Fry Outstanding Alumni Award from the Needmore High School Alumni Association.
Family include one son, Jon (Merrilou) Luse of Scottsburg; two daughters, Jill (Bob) Orender of Bedford, and Jaynee (George) Simmerman of Oolitic. She also had 10 grandchildren, Sally James, Chris Luse, Sarah (Drew) Holt, Geoff (Missy) Orender, Polly (Chris) Hamilton, Tim (Jonetta) Orender, Dr. Courtney (Michael) Miskuf, Cyle (Tara) Luse, Tristan (Adrea) Simmerman, and Britt Simmerman; 23 great-grandchildren, Joshua James, Jonathan James, Nicholas Luse, Cameron Luse, Gabrielle Holt, Mason Holt, Clayton Orender, Megan Orender, Victoria Orender, Mitchell Hamilton, Macee Hamilton, Joby Turner, Jesse Turner, Jalen Turner, Alex Blackwell, Xachary Blackwell, Kendyll Blackwell, Fletcher Miskuf, Aaron Miskuf, Lily Luse, Haylen Luse, Jacob Simmerman and Jacey Simmerman.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill; her parents; one daughter, Jolene Luse; and one brother, Clovis May.
Service will be at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at Avoca Baptist Church with Pastor Kyle Witmer officiating. Burial will follow in the Hilltop Cemetery in Avoca.
Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. on Monday, at the Day & Carter Mortuary.

Rosemary Trowbridge, 85, Mitchell, passed away at 3:57 a.m. on Sunday at IU Health Bedford Hospital.
Born Dec. 9, 1926, in Mitchell, she was the daughter of Roy and Louise (Merry) Hopper.
Rosemary retired from RCA with 25 years of service.
Surviving are one daughter, Judy Pittman of Mitchell; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Kay Tanksley of Mitchell.
Her parents; daughter, Rita Terrell; and sisters, Elsie Dorsett, Colleen Pridemore, and Betty Edwards, preceded her in death.
Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Mitchell Cemetery.
There will be no visitation.

Judith S. Brummett, 66, 599 N. Sandstone Road, Williams, died at 12:02 a.m. on Sunday in Bedford.
Born Feb. 20, 1946, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of David and Margaret (Moore) Nikirk. She married David Brummett on April 5, 1967, and he survives.
She was a newspaper carrier for the Times-Mail for 28 years.
Survivors include her husband, David of Williams; three daughters, Nancy Hedges and husband Maurice of Bicknell, Brenda Flynn of Bedford and Rachael Cornett and husband Randy of Williams; one son, Corey Brummett and wife Kris of Williams; eight grandchildren, Nathanael Flynn, Chelsea Flynn, Nick Brummett, Johnathan Brummett, Mandy Brummet, David Brummett, Dusty Burmmett and Derek Brummett; three sisters, Jean Cobb and husband Claude of Mooresville, Patty Johnson and husband Chuck of Oolitic and Carolyn Nikirk of Bedford; four brothers, Ronnie Nikirk and wife Susie of Oolitic, Russell Nikirk, Reggie Nikirk and wife Rebecca, Randy Nikirk and wife Trena, all of Bedford; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside service will be at 1 p.m. on Wednesday at Byers-Kilgore Cemetery in Odon, with Pastor Martin Jones officiating. Burial will follow.

Bettie L. Turner, 85, of Bedford, died at 11:45 p.m. on Friday, April 27, 2012, at Mitchell Manor.
Born June 25, 1926, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of James Leonard and Stella (Flynn) Martin. She married Ervin D. Turner on July 5, 1941, and he preceded her in death on July 1, 1993. She had worked as a medical assistant at Sunny Acres Rest Home and retired as a Nurses Aide from Dunn Memorial Hospital after 18 years. After her retirement she worked as a private duty caregiver. She attended Free Methodist Church and also Rivers Edge Church.
Survivors include two sons, Jack Turner and his wife Norma of Mitchell, and Dennis Turner of Knoxville, TN; six grandchildren, Sandra Clark and her husband Paul of Terre Haute, IN, Judy Turner and her companion Daniel Pinto of Bedford, Terri Scott and her husband Brian of Mitchell, Zachary Turner and his wife Roseanna of Oolitic, Josh Turner of Knoxville, TN, and Tina Reynolds and her husband Chris of Vancouver, WA; nine great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and three sisters, Pauline Jerrells, Dorothy Wright and Juanita Johnson; and three brothers, James Martin, Howard Cassidy and Lloyd Cassidy.

Howard L. 'Skip' Skillman

Howard Leon “Skip” Skillman, 71, of Perkins, Okla., went to be with his savior on Thursday, surrounded by his family.
Funeral services have been entrusted to the care of Palmer Marler Funeral Home of Stillwater and will be at 2 p.m. on Monday at Perkins Church of The Firstborn. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be at the funeral home from noon to 8 p.m. today.
Skip Skillman was born on July 21, 1940, in Elwood, to Kenneth and Ruth (McPhearson) Skillman. He grew up and attended schools in Elwood, graduating from Fayetteville High School. Skip was known at Fayettville as the “Mighty Mite of the Hardwood” for his incredible athletic abilities.
Playing for The Los Angeles Dodgers tempted Skip, but he chose instead to attend Taylor University on a baseball scholarship. After leaving Taylor, he joined the United States Air Force and attended basic training at Lackland Air Force Base before being stationed at Ellsworth Air Force Base, serving for four years as an administrative technician.
Following his honorable discharge from the USAF, Skip went to work for Arvin Industries in Columbus. He also re-enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve.
In 1957, Skip was baptized into the faith at the General Assembly and Church of the Firstborn in Elwood. In 1967, Skip relocated to Agra, Okla., and took a job working as an IBM systems analyst for First National Bank in Stillwater. In 1970, he accepted a position as a systems analyst at Oklahoma State University, a job he would enjoy for more than 30 years. In 1977, Skip married his best friend and the love of his life, Elaine Parker, and they made their home in Perkins, Okla.
In the mid 1990s, Skip retired from the U.S. Army Reserve as a Sgt. First Class. In 2002, after 32 years of service, Skip retired from OSU.
Skip was a kind and generous man who enjoyed making other people laugh. He was unselfish and always put other’s needs before his own. He was intelligent and was routinely called upon to figure the taxes of his friends and neighbors. He enjoyed playing softball and competed until he turned 40, at which point he took up a new found passion, golf.
On Monday mornings, Skip could always be found drinking coffee and playing a round of golf at Cimarron Trails with the same group of guys. Every year for nearly 30 years Skip played the role of Commissioner (“The Commish”) for The Kentucky Classic, an annual family golf tradition at Bright Leaf Golf Resort in Harrodsburg, Ky. More than anything, Skip enjoyed spending time with his family. He particularly loved to hang out with his grandchildren and could always be found on the sidelines cheering them on at their athletic events.
Skip was a loyal husband, loving father, devoted grandfather, beloved brother, and trusted friend. His legacy of love will live on through the lives of his children and grandchildren. He will be remembered for the faith and courage he displayed throughout his battle with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma and he will be deeply missed by all those fortunate enough to have called him a friend.
He is survived by his wife, Elaine Skillman; four children, Tina Burtrum and husband Clay, of Stillwater, Ken Skillman and wife Tonya, of Stillwater, Stacie Smith and husband Mark, of Frisco, Texas, and Heather White and husband Mark, of Dallas, Texas; six siblings, Terry Skillman and wife Susie, Steve Skillman and wife Becky, Theresa Rhoden and husband Kenny, Bob Skillman and wife Linda, Stan Skillman and wife Jill, and Rita Bullock and husband Mark; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews; and eight grandchildren, Brian and Adeline Skillman, Riley Smith, Westyn and Maddie White, Karly, Kinzie and Avery Burtrum.
Skip was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Brian Skillman; and a brother, Jeffrey Wayne Skillman.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made in Skip’s honor to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Oklahoma.

Frances Tolbert, 77, passed away at 7:53 a.m. Friday, at St. Vincent Dunn Hospital in Bedford.
Born June 13, 1934, in Chevrolet, Ky., she was the daughter of Nathaniel and Sallie (Scott) Ely. She married Willis E. Tolbert March 3, 1956, and he preceded her in death Feb. 17, 2003.
She was previously employed at RCA and was a member of the Mitchell Senior Citizens.
Surviving are daughters, Kathy M. (Dwight) Dunbar and Beth A. (Cary) Doub, both of Mitchell; grandchildren, Amanda L. Dunbar (Chris) Blais, Joshua D. Dunbar, Christopher L. Doub, and Nicholas C. Mary E. Leahy, 92, of Bedford, died at 5:36 a.m. on Thursday at her residence.
Born Nov. 25, 1919, in Bedford, she was the daughter of Lang and Grace (Inman) Hodges. She married Robert M. Leahy on Aug. 7, 1937, and he preceded her in death on Oct. 12, 1990.
She was a homemaker and member of the Avoca Baptist Church where she was involved in the music program for over 50 years.
Survivors include two sons, James Leahy of Columbus and Jack Leahy and wife Gwen of Bedford; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; five brothers, Fred, Ora, Wayne, Opal and Clyde Hodges; one son, George Leahy; and a daughter (in infancy).

Johanne W. Murphy, 82, of Bedford, died at 6:24 p.m. on Tuesday at her residence.
Born Oct. 19, 1929, in Catlin, Ill., she was the daughter of Edward M. and Esther (Nesbitt) Wheeler.
She married Paul J. Murphy on Feb. 3, 1951, and he survives.
She was a homemaker and registered nurse, having worked at Lakeview Hospital in Danville, Ill.
She was a graduate of Danville, Ill. High School, Class of 1947; and a graduate of Lakeview School of Nursing, Danville, Ill.
She was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, where she was very active in parish and school activities; Tri Kappa Sorority; American Red Cross volunteer, including being a member of the Indiana State Council; she received the Paragon Award for Indiana Red Cross Volunteer of the Year; charter member Bedford Swim Club; was on Bedford City Council for 11 years; board member of Limestone Girls’ Club; BHS and BNL Booster Clubs; Grubbies Bridge Club and other bridge clubs; board member of Louisville Regional Blood Center (Red Cross); charter member of Bedford Recreation Foundation; and she was a 2007 recipient of the Walk with Excellence Award (Women of Excellence).
Surviving are her husband, Paul J. Ida Flo Compton, 94, of Bedford, died at 12:40 a.m. on Monday at Ellenton Hospice House, Ellenton, Fla.
Born April 6, 1918, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Joseph and Bell (Merry) King.
She married Lester Compton on Oct. 23, 1935; and he preceded her in death on Jan. 24, 2012.
She was a homemaker, and a member of the Englewood Baptist Church. She taught Bible classes for 30 years; was a 4-H leader for five years in Lawrence County; sang in church choirs for 30 years; was a member of the Lawrence County Art Association; and a member of the Lawrence County Blind Association.
Surviving are her daughter, Jeanette (Jerry) Smith, of Palmetto, Fla.; one granddaughter, Angela Tyquiengco of Florida; and two great-grandchildren, Brooke and Brendon Tyquiengco of Florida.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; four brothers, Esco King, Otha King, Pricey King and Kersey King; five sisters, Druzella Stevens, Lois Miller, Roxie Miller, Iva Daniels and Trula Chase.
The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Englewood Baptist Church, with Pastor David Ferry officiating. Burial will be at Port William Cemetery in Williams.

Gerald ‘Jake’ Henderson

Gerald “Jake” Henderson, 80, of Orleans, died Wednesday at his home.
He was born July 11, 1931, in Detroit, Wayne County, Mich. He was the son of Harley D. and Vera Alice Humphreys Henderson. He was married to Rachel A. Chastain on July 11, 1951, and she preceded him in death on Sept. 28, 1994. He married Velma Harris on Jan. 17, 2004, and she survives.
He retired in 1976 from the former Carpenter Body Works in Mitchell.
He was a member of the Orleans Nazarene Church.
Along with his wife, Velma, he is survived by sons, Johnny Henderson and wife Kate of Paoli, Ron Henderson of State College, Pa., Tim Ball and wife Cindy of Ben Wheeler, Texas, Thomas Ball and wife Patricia of Salem, and Brett Pittman and wife Jamie of Springville; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Vivian Cuddy, 84, of Bloomington, died at 5:35 p.m. on Monday at Indiana University Bloomington Hospital following a brief illness.
Born Jan. 19, 1928, in Bedford, she was the daughter of Raymond and Mary (Polk) Pace. She attended Stalker Elementary School and graduated from Bedford High School.
She married Charles Hague and he preceded her in death. She married James Cuddy on Sept. 29, 1978, and he survives.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Oolitic Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, James of Bloomington; two daughters, Connie Gorgas and husband Marty and Janna Roman and husband Pedro; a son, Mike Cuddy and wife Jan; six grandchildren, Jeremy and Joshua Smith, Jana and Matt McGee, David Cuddy and Natalie Lang; nine great-grandchildren, Cooper, Lilly, Payton, Ava and Thatcher Smith, J.J. and Steven Green and Parker and Lillian Cuddy; several nieces and nephews and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her first husband; her parents; four sisters, Virginia McFarland, Hazel Gould, June Hert and one in infancy; and one brother, Virgil (Bud) Pace.

Robert Eugene Cranfield, 66, of Bedford, died at 6:15 p.m .on Saturday at Indiana University Bloomington Hospital Hospice House.
Born April 5, 1946, in Madison County, he was the son of Kenneth and Thelma (Carver) Cranfield. Robert married Loretta Beaver on June 27, 1986, and she survives.
He retired in 2004 from Visteon.
Robert was a veteran of the United States Army and attended the Donica Church of God.
Survivors include his wife Loretta of Bedford; two sons, Michael S. Cranfield and wife Donna of Paoli, and Jeremy R. Cranfield and wife Amy of West Baden; two daughters, Vickie R. He was a member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Leesville.
He retired from the Indiana State Highway Department after many years of service.
Surviving are his wife, Cindy Powell of Leesville; three sons, Brian Powell of Medora, Billy Powell of Evansville and Mark Nicholson of Bedford; three daughters, Alison Burton of Florida, Beth Mathews of Bedford and Michelle Jacks of Columbus; 11 grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Beth Ferguson; and one grandson, Jacob Powell.

Doris M. Huff-Cheek, 92, was born on Feb. 16, 1920, to Della and Julius Huff, in Bedford. She just celebrated her 92nd birthday. She had Alzheimer’s the last five years and lived in Hawaii and Florida where she died in a nursing home in St. Cloud, Fla.
Doris was raised in Lawrence County and graduated from Shawswick High School, as were her brothers, Clarence Huff of Ohio, Bob Huff of Tennessee, Burl Huff of Bedford, and Ernest Huff of Florida, who are deceased. Tom Huff of Michigan and Florida is her only living brother. She had two sisters, Gilberta Lutz of Martinsville and Florida and Iola Millican of Wabash, who are deceased. She has 14 nieces and nephews.
Doris married Roy M. Cheek on July 1, 1939. They had three children Sondra K. Cheek-Brelsford-Moore (Nathaniel) of Beloit, Wis., Judith Ann Cheek-Murphy-Williams (Ted) of Johnston City, Ill.; and Robert E. (Pam) Cheek of Plainfield. Grandchildren are Matt Brelsford, (died at 7 months), Michael S.R. Brelsford, LeAnn Murphy-Brentley (deceased), Charles L. Murphy, Colleen K. Brelsford-Dawson, Jason B. (Olia) Cheek, Eric (Kristi) Cheek, Edward R.R. Brelsford, Mark A.J. Brelsford, ShoShanna N. Brelsford-Vitullo (Phillip), and Scarlet-Ann G. Brelsford-Hessian. Great-grandchildren are Diedre K. Brelsford, David S.R. Brelsford (Amanda), Shane A. Dawson, Brittany K. Dawson, Stephanie E. Dawson, Lindsey M. Dawson, Zachary A. Dawson, Kelsey A. Brelsford, Jessica R. Murphy, Charles L. Murphy, and Kinsey S. Hessian. Great-great-grandchildren are Alyssa, Taryn, Riley, Olivia K., Landen, and Adain. As well as a large extended family in the Bedford area.
She helped with Girl Scouts and 4-H groups in Lawrence County for 10 years.
She and her sister faithfully attended the Shawswick High School Alumni Banquets, even after she moved to Florida. They are surely missed.

She was a homemaker and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She was of the Baptist faith.

He married Dorothy Mae Faubion on Dec. 15, 1943; and she preceded him in death on Dec. 21, 1999.
He was a construction worker and a hod carrier. He was a member of Wesley Chapel Church, and a member of the International Laborers Union 741 for 55 years. He was a United States Army Veteran having served in World War II.
Surviving are his daughter, Donna Lee Flick of Bedford; daughter-in-law, Viola Brown of Mitchell; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Bette was employed at Indiana National Bank as a bank teller, she was a member of Fairfax Christian Church in Indianapolis.
Bette grew up on the east side of Indianapolis, she loved to garden, was a great cook, and was very active in her church. She enjoyed life to the fullest.
Surviving family members are three sons, Gary Lish of Indianapolis, Larry Lish and wife Phyllis of Indianapolis, and Jerry Lish and wife Mary of Bedford; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one brother, John Blickenstaff of Fort Meyers, Fla.; and numerous friends.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1942-1945.

Marjorie Rosetta (Wininger) Bledsoe, 92, of Bedford, a former resident of Indianapolis, died at 2:50 p.m. on Thursday at the Indiana University Health Bedford Hospital.
Born Jan. 4, 1920, in Vincennes, she was the daughter of Lannie B. and Opal (Spore) Wininger. She married Thomas Bledsoe on Dec. 12, 1941, and he proceeded her in death in 1980.
Marge grew up in West Baden Springs (Russellville) and always enjoyed going to her West Baden alumni banquets. She loved to travel with the Mary Rigg Senior Center (Indianapolis), to Hawaii, and many trips to Branson, Mo. Dancing, card playing, and bingo were some of her favorite things to do, she was also a member of Women of the Moose, Chapter 518 (Speedway). Margie enjoyed life to the fullest.
Marge was employed at RCA, S&H Green Stamp Store, and G.C. Murphy, she was a member of the River Avenue and Belmont Baptist Churches, in Indianapolis.
She was the oldest of five children, brother, Dexter; and sisters, Mary Lee “Skete,” Tressa, and Nona, all whom proceeded her in death.
Surviving family members are three daughters, Bonnie (Rick) Bugh, of Concord Ga., Darlene Ross of Bedford and Bev (Bob) Carpenter of Sammamish Wash.; seven grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Frank D. Hill, 93, Medora, died at 3 a.m. Friday at his residence.
He was born Feb. 12, 1919, in Jackson County, to the late Styles Hill and Fannie Gillen Hill. He married Evelyn Bereniece Boss, and she preceded him in death in 1997.
Mr. Hill was a charter member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church at Leesville. He graduated from Medora High School in 1937 and was a farmer. He served on the State Bank of Medora board for 44 years and was then appointed board member emeritus. He also served on the Jackson County School Reorganization Committee and as chairman of Hill Farms, Inc.
Survivors include four sons, Larry (Virginia) Hill of Shelbyville, and John W. Rick Lee McCormick, 50, Bedford, passed away at 4:55 p.m. on Thursday at his residence.
Born Jan. 3, 1962, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Willard “Mickey” and Margaret A. (Smith) McCormick. He married Tamara Gardner April 1, 2006. He was formerly married to Sheila McCormick of Fayetteville.
He was a U. S. Army veteran, assigned to the Bridge Mission in Africa, served in Germany, and was a member of Cecil C. Martin American Legion Post No. 250.
Rick was a past president and assistant regional director of ABATE and a very passionate motorcycle rider. He also followed his father’s footsteps and was owner and driver of stock race cars, and was a truck driver for over 30 years.
Surviving are his wife, Tamara McCormick of Bedford; his children, Michael McCormick of Fayetteville and Camden Spinks of Bedford; siblings, Scott (Linda) McCormick of Seymour, Jeff (Debra) McCormick of Edinburgh, Melissa (Don) Meyer of Sellersburg, Amy Gorbett of Seymour, C.W. (Jacquelyn) McCormick of West Virginia, Mike (Kimbra) McCormick of Kansas, Randy (Jaquelyn) McCormick, Kansas, and Patti (Alvin) Aska of Los Angeles, Calif.; uncle, Bud (Linda) Smith of Bedford; and aunt, Marlene (Phillip) Tincher of Mitchell.
His parents preceded him in death.
Funeral service will be at 6 p.m. Sunday in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home and Cremation Center with Frank Ira and Bud Smith officiating. The Rev. John Edward Turner, 84, of Springville, died at 4:20 a.m. on Thursday at St. Vincent Dunn Hospital.
Born Oct. 15, 1927, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Oscar and Martha (Benge) Turner. He married Sharon Bundy on Nov. 5, 1955, and she survives.
He retired from Indiana Limestone Co. in 1989 after 43 years of service. He was a retired minister having served 10 years at New Union Christian Church, seven years at Guthrie Christian Church and 33 years at Mount Pleasant Christian Church in Gosport. He was a member of the New Union Christian Church.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Sharon; two daughters, Jenny (Dan) Scott of Bedford and Beth (Steve) DuMond of Williams; five grandchildren, Danny (Mandy) Perry of Owensburg, Jon Perry of Bedford, Leah Perry of Muncie, and Leslie Jackson and Jason Cooper, both of Williams; a granddaughter-in-law, Alecia Perry of Bedford; nine great-grandchildren, Kody, Gabrielle, Jesse, Abigail, Ryan, Brianna, Savannah, Brayden and Levi; one sister, Sharon Waggoner of Bedford; and several nieces and nephews.

Nora M. Jenkins, 89, of Bedford, died at 12:30 p.m. on Monday at Garden Villa.
Born July 27, 1922, in Monroe County, she was the daughter of W. Fred and Gladys (Swango) Wilson. She married Art Jenkins on Feb. 21, 1942, and he preceded her in death on Feb. 5, 1992.
She retired as a clerk for the F. W. Woolworth Store where she was in charge of the pet department for many years. She later worked for Ed’s Ghost Town.
Her husband, Art was well known for his show horses and he and Nora were active in shows and parades. Many of their costumes were made by Nora.
She was a member of the Englewood Baptist Church and A.A.R.P. where she had been a former president for over 12 years. Nora was an animal lover and was one of the original founders of the White River Humane Society.
Survivors include one son, Marvin Jenkins of Underwood; and one grandson, Jeff Jenkins of Minnesota.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Friday in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with the Rev. David Ferry officiating. Burial will follow in the Beech Grove Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday at the mortuary.

Born May 7, 1930 in Kyrock, Ky., she was the daughter of Dabner and Christine (Kinser) Cook. She married R. Basil Sipes; and he preceded her in death on Jan. 6, 1974.
She was employed at Westinghouse Electric for several years.
She was of the Protestant Faith, and also was an Eastern Star.
Surviving are her son, Mike (Marlene) Sipes of Bedford; two grandsons, Scott (Kristin) Sipes of Fernandina Beach, Fla., and Jeremy Sipes of Bedford; one granddaughter, Amber (Sean) Cleary of New York City, N.Y.; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Dabner (Treva) Cook Jr. and David (Shirley) Cook, all of Odon; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
Cremation was chosen. Burial will take place at a later date in Walnut Hill Cemetery, Odon.

Mildred “Jean” Barnett, age 85, of Bedford, passed away at 3 a.m. on Thursday at StoneBridge Health Campus in Bedford.
She was born in Lawrence County on Oct. 6, 1926, the daughter of Claude and Lois (Younger) Bever, Jean married Carl Barnett on May 11, 1956, and he preceded her in death on May 11, 2000.
Jean retired from the Bedford National Bank, and was a 50-year member of the Eastern Star; she was also President of the Eastern Star Past Matrons and Past Patrons Club.
She is survived by her sister, Norma Crane of Bedford; one sister-in-law, Mary Bever of Owensburg; one brother-in-law, David Schmalz of Indianapolis; and several nieces and nephews.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sister, Dorothy Schmalz; and brother, Lee Bever.
Graveside services were Saturday at Cresthaven Memory Gardens.
Cresthaven Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Born July 20, 1929, in Bedford, he was the son of Austin O. Hubbard and Hilda (Foster) Hubbard. He married Iris Jackson on July 22, 1950, and she survives.
He was employed as a salesman at Jenkins’ and Hoosier Parts in Bedford. He enjoyed watching NASCAR.
He was a member of the Davis Memorial Church of the Nazarene for several years.

Born July 22, 1941, in Martin County, she was the daughter of Merle H. and Lela M. (Taylor) Price. Janice married Harold S. Newell on Sept. 24, 1966, and he survives.
She retired from the deli department of JayC Plus after working there for 13 years and had been a cook at the Bedford Junior High School. She was a member of the New Union Christian Church.

He was an electrician and retired in 1987. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving in World War II and a member of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW)

Mr. Welton retired on May 5, 1983, from Carpenter Body Works in Mitchell; he is a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, a member of American Legion Post No. 250 in Mitchell, a member of the Mitchell VFW, and a member of the Calvary Lutheran Church in Bedford.

Sue A. Griffith, age 79, of Bedford, passed away at 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday at her residence.
She was born in Lawrence County on May 29, 1932, to William Carol Hall and Wanita (Childers) Hall. Sue married Richard C. Griffith on March 17, 1951, in Bedford and Richard survives.
Sue retired from the Edgewood Clinic of the Bedford Medical Center.
Survivors include her husband, Richard C. Griffith of Bedford; one daughter, Connie S. Griffith of Bedford; and several nieces and nephews.
Sue was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Terri L. Griffith; one son, Stephen S. Griffith; and two sisters, Sharon Maxwell and Norma Jean Mathis.
Private funeral services were held on Saturday at Cresthaven Funeral Home.
Burial was in Cresthaven Memory Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the White River Humane Society.

Dewey Luttrell Jr., 71, of 5739 Rawles Ave. Indianapolis, died at 8:35 a.m. on Friday at Westview Manor Nursing Home in Bedford.
Born Jan. 5, 1941 in Lawrence County, he was the son of Louie Murry Luttrell and Alma (Rodgers) Luttrell Kern. He first married Kay Stigall who is the mother of his children, and later married Mary Durre and she survives.
He graduated from Fayetteville High School.
He was a retired carpenter and a U.S. Air Force veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Caroline Luttrell; two daughters, Mashell Crump and Edwina Luttrell, both of Michigan; one son, Dwayne Luttrell of Michigan; five grandchildren, Katrina Weil, Nathan Weil and wife Holly, Jared Gipson, Erika Gipson and Lindsey Gipson; two great-grandchildren, Tyler Weil and Annalisa Zinn; two brothers, Charles and Michael Luttrell, both of Indianapolis; three half brothers, Lanny, Danny, and William Luttrell, all of Bedford; one half sister, Robin Johnson of Ohio; and his stepchildren, Debra Grant and Mark Duncan.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Kevin Luttrell; one stepson, Steven Duncan; four brothers, Morris, Lewis, Wayne, and Orris Luttrell and Edward Luttrell in infancy; one sister, Rudeen Patton and Patsy Luttrell in infancy; one half brother, Robert Luttrell; and stepfather, John Kern.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Tuesday in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Bennie Sutherland officiating. Burial will follow in the Patton Hill Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded at the graveside by members of the American Legion Gillen Post No. 33.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today and 10 a.m. until the service on Tuesday at the mortuary.

Aston ‘Buck’ Hall

Aston Samuel “Buck” Hall, 82, passed away at 10:45 p.m. Friday at IU Health Bloomington Hospital.
Born Feb. 6, 1930, in Ben Hur, Va., he was the son of Marshall and Nancy (Sage) Hall. He married Mary Jane “Mollie” Deirth Nov. 29, 1952, and she preceded him in death Aug. 2, 1997.
Aston spent four years in the Army Corps of Engineers serving in England and Panama. Upon his return, he spent the majority of his working years as a truck driver, retiring from Teamsters with Mitchell Transport in 1985.
Surviving are children, Wesley Hall and wife Kim of Ben Hur, Va., Sharon Napier of Jonesville, Va., Rebecca Brown Wells and husband Daniel of Big Stone Gap, Va., and John Hall and wife Sharon of Mitchell; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
His parents; wife, “Mollie,” and 13 brothers and sisters, preceded him in death.
Funeral service will be at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Province Funeral Home, Pennington Gap, Va. Friends may call from 6 p.m. until the service at the funeral home.
A graveside service with military rites will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Lee Memorial Gardens, Woodway, Va.

Juanita E. Williams, 86, of Bloomfield, passed away at 8:32 p.m. Thursday, March 29, 2012, at Greene County General Hospital in Linton.
Born November 11, 1925, in Needmore, she was the daughter of Glen and Goldia (Booker) McGlothlin.
She retired from the Bloomfield State Bank as a bookkeeper and was a homemaker. She was a member of the Mineral United Methodist Church, Mineral Ladies Aid and the United Methodist Women.
Surviving relatives include three daughters, Connie Burris of Jasonville, Jeanne Patterson of Lyons, and Mary Ann Johnson of Bloomfield; grandchildren, Nikki Abrams (Mike), Kristi Vandeventer (Adam), Erica Williams, Peggy Williams, Christie Moore (Jay), Logan Williams (Terran), Jason Coker (Michele), Chad Patterson (Tabby), Crystal Patterson, Ryan Arford, Jarod Arford and Jordan Arford; great-grandchildren, Jaspar Moore, Caleb Moore, Ciera Abrams, Jaden Abrams, Brynn Vandeventer, Aria Williams and Caden Johnson; one brother, Gene McGlothlin of Mineral; and one sister, Jerri Achors of Scotland.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gale B. Williams in 1986; two sons, Larry G. Williams and Dennis G. Williams; two sisters, Violet Ruth and Eva Mae; and her parents.
Funeral services will be conducted 10 a.m. Monday April 2, 2012, at the Mineral United Methodist Church, with Rev. Steve Eads officiating. Interment will follow in Ashcraft Chapel cemetery.
Friends may call from 3-8 p.m. Sunday at Jenkins & Sons Funeral Home in Bloomfield and one hour prior to services Monday at the church.
