October 31, 2012 Beatrice M. Kern Nov. 29, 1931 — Oct. 28, 2012 Beatrice “Bea” M. Kern, age 80, of Bedford, passed away at 12:10 a.m. on Sunday at Westview Manor Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Bedford. Bea was born in Lawrence County on Nov. 29, 1931, to Leonard “Len” and Mae (Norris) Rawnsley. She married William F. Kern on Sept. 8, 1957, and he survives. Bea was a member of the Pink Ladies Auxiliary at Dunn Memorial Hospital and a lifelong member of the Englewood Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband, William F. Kern of Bloomington; two sons, Scott Kern and wife Susan of Bloomington and James Kern and wife Rhonda of Bristow, Va.; four grandchildren, Nathan Kern of Bloomington, and Adam, Alex and Abby Kern of Bristow, Va.; sister-in-law, Wanda (Peach) Rawnsley of Plainfield; nephew, Mike Rawnsley and wife Audrey and children, Stephen, Stephanie, and Stacy of Fishers; sister-in-law, Eva (Billie) Simpson of Springville; and cousin (like a sister), Elizabeth Deckard and her sons, Leo Deckard and wife Lisa and children Jim, Liana and Tara; Kenneth Deckard and wife Karen and children Keith and Keven; and Richard Deckard and wife Shawna and children Jacob, Joe and Kate, all of Bedford. She was preceded in death by her parents, Leonard and Mae (Norris) Rawnsley; and one brother, Bob Rawnsley. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Friday at Cresthaven Funeral Home with the Rev. Cassidy June 26, 1941 — Oct. 29, 2012 William G. “Bill” Cassidy, 71, of Bedford, died at 6:46 p.m. on Monday at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital. Born June 26, 1941, in Bedford, he was the son of Joseph and Louisa (McDermen) Cassidy. He married Faye Scott on June 29, 1963, and she survives. He retired from General Motors in Bedford in 1987 and had served on the board of directors for Hoosier Hills Credit Union for 38 years. He was a member of the Bedford Masonic Lodge #14 F & AM, Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis and a 32nd degree Mason. He enjoyed antique clocks, old cars and attending clock shows with his late friend, Gordon Reuter and wife, Margaret. Survivors include his wife, Faye, of Bedford; children, Scott Cassidy of Mitchell, Joe Cassidy and wife Kelly of Bedford and John Cassidy and wife Jennifer of Bedford; grandchildren, Justin, Josh, Jake, Bowen, Jessica and husband Neil Embree, and Shelby; great-grandchildren, Scotlyn, Cade and Harper; a brother, Ben Cassidy and wife Myla, of Fayetteville; two sisters, Jeanette Nikirk and husband Delvin of Oolitic and Margaret Brown and husband Dick of Bedford; and several nieces and nephews, including three special nieces, Paula, Dee and Cathy. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Catherine Dorsett, Virginia Ray and JoAnn Cassidy; and two brothers, Carl and Jim Cassidy. Noel July 17, 1923 — Oct. 29, 2012 Clara Bernice Noel, 89, of Bedford, died at 3:40 p.m. on Monday at I.U. Health Bedford Hospital. Born July 17, 1923, in Springville, she was the daughter of Clarence B. and Clara (Wright) Kirkman. She married Ernest H. Godsey and he preceded her in death. She later married Elmer Butcher and he preceded her in death. She then married Ralph Noel and he also preceded her in death. She retired from G.E. in Bloomington. She was a devoted mother and grandmother, a member of the Grace Baptist Church in Springville where she had taught Sunday school, played the piano and sang. She enjoyed traveling. Survivors include a son, Dennis Godsey and wife Frances (Draus) of Springville; two daughters, Patricia J. (Godsey) Super and husband Don of Springville and Beverly (Godsey) Keister and husband David of Martinsville; a brother, Lester Kirkman; a sister, Mavis Stafford; 10 grandchildren, Connie (Corey) Brown of Markel, Martin Corey of Switz City, Lisa Gayle (Corey) Kelley of Ossian, Sherry Jo (Corey) Mattix of Bloomfield, Daren Scott Lester of Ellettsville, Barry Lester of Mitchell, Kristin Lester of Vincennes, Brian Godsey of Springville, and Leann Herr and Janice Wisley, both of Bedford; nine step-grandchildren, Daniel Keister of Logansport, David Bruce Keister of Martinsville, Deborah (Keister) Hubbard of Martinsville, Doug Keister of Martinsville, Angel Head of Spencer, Dinah Super of Connecticut, and Christina Root of Bedford; 34 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; three husbands; a son, Darrell (in infancy); three sisters, Marguerite Kirkman, Marjorie Koontz and Thelma Mikels. Robert Basinger Dec. 3, 1944 — Oct. 26, 2012 Robert “Johnny” Basinger, 67, Heltonville, died at Westview Nursing and Rehab Center at 12:15 p.m. on Friday. He was born Dec. 3, 1944, to James Benjemin and Mamie Agnes (Cassidy) Basinger. He is a retired stone quarry worker from Indiana Limestone. He played Santa on the square in downtown Bedford for many years. Survivors include two daughters, Grace (Tyson) George and April Basinger, both of Heltonville; one sister, Mary Lucas; two brothers, Louis (Gerrie) Basinger and Frank (Janet) Basinger; and one sister-in-law, Beverly Kennedy, all of Bedford; two granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Cecilia “Susie” Basinger; two bothers, Jimmy Basinger and Bernard Basinger (in infancy); four sisters, Teresa Pruitt, Dora Caraway, Anna Lee Basinger (in infancy) and Wilma Basinger (in infancy). Charles Sept. 14, 1926 — Oct. 29, 2012 Farrell Wayne “Buck” Charles, 86, of Bedford, died Monday at his residence. Born Sept. 14, 1926, in Bedford, he was the son of Vollie and Ocie (Tucker) Charles. He married Wilma L. Chasteen on June 9, 1972, and she survives in Bedford. He served in the United States Navy on the USS Nehenta Bay in World War II. He loved to watch Western movies, and loved to read. He also loved working in his garage. He retired from Crane. He worked for the Lawrence County Highway Department at the Needmore trash complex for 10 years. He also worked at Fourwinds Resort as a security guard for 10 years. Surviving him are his wife, Wilma L. Charles, of Bedford; three sons, Vance Charles and wife Holly, Farrell “Bucky” Charles and wife Linda, and Steve Kinser and wife Carol, all of Bedford; two daughters, Debby Rollins and husband Greg of Bedford and Phyllis Flynn of Indianapolis; 12 grandchildren, Kayla Rollins, Robbie Davis (Julie), James Davis (Mandy), Amanda Goodman (Nick), Adam Kinser, Rachel Hillenburg, Bucky Charles II, Savanna Charles, Taylor Charles, Cooper Charles, Allen Taylor, Charlie Barnes; and seven great-grandchildren, Kane Charles, Bre’Onna Charles, Bekah Hillenburg, Kortni Allen, Austin Davis, Alexis Davis and Abby Davis. Unger Feb. 18, 1952 — Oct. 28, 2012 Debra Jean Unger, a loving daughter, wife, mother and grandmother, passed away at 4 a .m. on Sunday at her residence. Born Feb. 18, 1952, in Bloomington, she was the daughter of Robert E. and Evelyn J. (Goble) Hamm. She married George M. Unger July 19, 1971. Debbie was a seamstress, a culinary arts instructor at Ivy Tech and formerly an activities director at Mitchell Manor. She was a member of Fishing Creek Chapel, president of Gamma Epsilon Chapter of Tri Kappa and past president of the Christian Women’s Club. Debbie designed and made costumes for the theater productions at Madison Consolidated High School and was named an Honorary Thespian. She graduated from Spencer High School in 1970. All of those visiting her home were welcomed. Surviving are her husband, George Unger of Mitchell; son, Yancy and Heather Unger and their children, Ashley, Isaac and Amelia of Bedford; daughters, Holly Thatcher and her children, Brittany, Cody, Tara and Gabe of Bedford; and Jamie and Aaron Kelsey and their children, Tristan, Vanina, Jack, Owain and Poppy of Madison; father, Robert E. Hamm of Bloomington and brother, Gary Hamm of Cumby, Texas. Her mother preceded her in death. Clay, 94, of Bloomington, passed away early Friday morning, October 26, 2012, at the Bloomington Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was born in Bloomington January 8, 1918, to George and Minnie Goss Crohn. Gertrude was a graduate of Bloomington High School, a member of Clear Creek Christian Church and a former member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW. Gertrude spent her working career with RCA, Sarkes Tarzian and also owned and operated a beauty shop along with her twin sister, Gretta Cox. She leaves behind her son, Mark A. Clay and his wife Deborah of Bloomington; grandson, Travis Clay and his wife Jana of Bloomington; granddaughter, Jamie Isom and her husband Cody of Bedford; twin sister, Gretta Cox of Bloomington; and great-grandchildren, Baylee, Paris, Lillee and Briar Isom. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Gertrude was preceded in death by her parents; eight brothers, Frank, William, Enouch, Marcus, Gilbert, Glenn, Leon and Kenneth Crohn; an infant sister; and her husband, William Clay, in 2003. October 26, 2012 Harold E. Smale June 30, 1927 — Oct. 24, 2012 Harold Eugene “Gene” Smale, 85, of Bedford, died at 8:03 p.m. on Wednesday at his residence. Born June 30, 1927, in Bedford, he was the son of Fred Jacob and Dorothy (Blackwell) Smale. He married Mary D. Morgan on June 25, 1950, and she died Aug. 7, 2012. He retired as a route salesman for the Nabisco Co. in 1988 after 33 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving during World War II and a member of the Bartlettsville Christian Church. Survivors include three sons, Rick W. Smale and wife Cindy, James D. Smale and wife Angie and David Allen Smale, all of Bedford; a daughter, Terri Lynn Padget and husband John of Loogootee; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren and one on the way. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; a brother, Walter Smale; and daughter-in-law, Belinda Smale. Deloris was born in Oolitic on May 14, 1934, to parents, William and Mattie Bush. She was a free spirit and will be greatly missed by her loved ones. Deloris was preceded in death by her parents; stepmother, Estes Bush; brother, Robert Bush; sister, Rosemary Jones; and husband, Robin Riley. Evans, 58, of Bedford, passed away on Sunday at her residence in Bedford. Cheryl was born on July 11, 1954, in Carmel by the Sea, Calif., to the late Richard Joe Evans and Patricia Joanne (Clendening) Evans. Survivors include one son, Bill Evans and wife Kristine of Lake Mary, Fla.; one granddaughter, Maya Evans; two sisters, Marilyn Hostetler of Bloomington, and Terri Evans of Bedford; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Bill Evans and Ricky Evans. Cremation was chosen, with burial in Florida at a later date. October 25, 2012 Brian Keith Gilbert Jan. 4, 1960 — Oct. 22, 2012 Brian Keith Gilbert, 52, of Oolitic, passed away at 7:44 p.m. on Monday at University of Louisville Hospital in Louisville, Ky., from injuries he sustained at General Motors, with his loving family at his side. Born Jan. 4, 1960, in Bedford, he was the son of Voy and Phyllis (Pace) Gilbert. He graduated in 1978 from Bedford North Lawrence High School where he was a member of the BNL basketball team. He was a machine repairman at General Motors in Bedford for 32 years and a member of U.A.W. Local No. 440. Brian is survived by his love and “bestest” friend, Sharon Crane of 19 years; a son, Jeremy (Hilary) Gilbert of Bedford; a daughter, Jacey Gilbert of Bedford; a stepdaughter, Sara (Brice) Templeton of Bedford; four grandchildren, Jerett and Jaden Gilbert, baby girl Gilbert, and Aliza and Haden Templeton; his father, Voy; a brother, Mike (Sheila) Gilbert of Oolitic; a sister, Teresa (Joe) Boshears of Bedford; nephews, Johnny Mike (Laura) Gilbert, Jared (Melissa) Gilbert, Justin Gilbert, Jordan Boshears, Joshua Harrell and Aaron Harrell; a niece, Lauren Boshears and many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his mother, Phyllis; a brother, Larry and his grandparents, Clyde and Mabel Pace and Wallace and Delia Gilbert. Brian was a loving father and papaw. He enjoyed spending time with his grandkids and family, watching them participate in their activities and just hanging out with them. He and Sharon watched Andy Griffith reruns and loved to vacation in Mayberry, N.C. He loved to golf with his son, brother, nephews and friends. He was assistant basketball coach at Oolitic Middle School. He coached basketball and baseball for many years at Oolitic Biddy Ball League and Boys Club. Maynard Nov. 29, 1951 — Oct. 22, 2012 Danny Lee Maynard, 60 of Brandon, Fla., passed away of natural causes at his home in Brandon on Monday. He was born Nov. 29, 1951, in Hiawatha, Kan., the son of Lynn Gerard and Laverne Mae Camblin-Maynard. He graduated from Maysville High School and attended Central Christian College in Moberly, Mo. He found the love of his life in college and they moved to Indiana where they were married and purchased the Bedford Bible Bookstore from his wife’s parents. They owned and operated the bookstore for 33 years in Bedford, before retiring in 2007. He was a dedicated Minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ his entire married life. He enjoyed many special talents including hunting, farming, tractor and backhoe work, wood working and doing anything that blessed other people. But most of all, Danny rejoiced in bringing anyone to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. Therefore, he tirelessly volunteered his time and talent to helping people so that he might have an opportunity to share his faith with them. He loved the Lord Jesus more than anything of this world. The Maynards attend church at Kingdom Christian Ministries in Lithia, Fla. He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Mary Elizabeth Smelser-Maynard; his sister, Donna Maynard-McCullem of Columbia, Mo.; his two daughters, both Bedford natives, Rachael Marie and husband Chad Word currently of in Atlanta, Ga., and Rebecca Ruth and husband Randall Brooks currently of Apollo Beach, Fla.; and five grandchildren, Levi and Olivia Word and Quinn, Kira and Conner Brooks. Mitchell Sept. 23, 1970 — Oct. 21, 2012 Leslie Dawn Mitchell, 42, 4194 State Road 158, Bedford, died Sunday from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. Born Sept. 23, 1970, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Lester “Bud” and Judy (Dobson) Mitchell. She was formerly married to Jerry Sweigart. She worked in the receiving department at Lowe’s Home Improvement Store in Bedford and attended Rivers Edge Community Church. Survivors include her father and stepmother, Lester “Bud” and Neysa Mitchell of Fayetteville; a daughter, Sharayah Sweigart of Fayetteville; a sister, Cyndi Coldren and husband David of Moncks Corner, S.C.; two stepsisters, Leysa Nichols and husband Aaron of Bedford and Layne Bailey and husband Brock of Mitchell; a stepbrother, Eric Lewis of Fayetteville; two nieces, Delaney and Kylie Coldren of South Carolina and a stepdaughter, Allison Sweigart of Jasper. Imogene Kursner April 20, 1922 — Oct. 19, 2012 Imogene Kursner, age 90, of Three Rivers Mich., passed away on Friday at Three Rivers Health. She was born in Avoca, on April 20, 1922, the daughter of Harley and Geneva (Jennie) Holmes. Imogene worked for many years at Continental Can from where she eventually retired. She was an avid reader and also enjoyed doing crossword puzzles. Mrs. Kursner was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bill Kursner in 2002; daughter, Kay Frances; brother, Clayton Holmes; and grandson, Jeffery Cross. Whitmill Feb. 19, 1931 — Oct. 20, 2012 Margaret Ann “Peggy” (Horton) Whitmill, 79, Westfield, passed away Saturday at Miller’s Merry Manor Nursing home in Walkerton. Peggy was born Feb. 19, 1931, in Hamilton County, to Hubert and Gladys (Day) Horton, where she spent her childhood and met George A Whitmill in 1946 upon his return from World War II. She and George were married in 1947, and moved to Lawrence County in 1950 where they settled, raised their family and enjoyed life together until George’s passing in 2007. Peggy served her community and her church (Springville United Methodist) for over 60 years. Returning to school in 1979, Peggy fulfilled her dream and received her Bachelor’s degree from Indiana University. In 2004, she and George were honored at the Needmore High School Alumni Banquet as “Mr. and Mrs. Hilltopper” for their service to the school. She was beloved by her family, church and community for her love and generosity. Her family will miss her, and wish to express their gratitude to the neighbors and caregivers who cared for her in her final years. Peggy is survived by her two children, George M. He was a professional bowler for many years, and was an original member of the PBA. He also worked installing and resurfacing bowling lanes. Skaidrite Melkis Jan. 19, 1920 — Oct. 3, 2012 Skaidrite “Sky” Melkis, 92, of Norman, Indiana, previously of Broad Ripple, Indiana, left us to be with the Lord on October 3, 2012. She died peacefully with most of her family by her bedside after a four-year struggle to survive a major stroke which she suffered in 2008. Skaidrite was born in Riga, Latvia, on January 19, 1920. She married Valdemars Melkis in 1940 and they had been happily married for 63 years when he died in 2003. Skaidrite and her family came to the United States in 1950 as “displaced persons” following World War II. They resided in Indianapolis and were very active in the Latvian Community and Church. She was employed for many years at Rough Notes Printing Company, retiring from there in 1985. She remained involved with Rough Notes activities and friends until her stroke and subsequent move to live with her daughters in southern Indiana. Skaidrite is survived by her two daughters and their husbands, Dagnia and John Feaster of Norman, Indiana, and Karen and David Conner of Bloomington, Indiana. Also mourning her death are grandchildren Karen Guilford, Kief Conner, and Sofia (Conner) Dvorak and Sofia’s husband Brett Dvorak. Three great-grandchildren, David Brown, Sarah Guilford and Eldon Valdemars Conner are sadly missing their “Mimi.” Skaidrite also departs from her many remaining friends and relatives, even as she is reunited with those who passed before her. Deanna was born Aug. 17, 1950, in Shelbyville, to William and Betty Connors, who preceded her in death. She graduated Southport High School in 1968 and attended San Jose Barber College in San Jose, Calif. Upon returning to Indiana, Deanna worked more than 20 years as a professional barber and owned barber businesses in Bedford. She was passionate about lifting others up in times of need and empowering the community, and volunteered her time and barber services to the local jail for many years. Deanna also volunteered counseling services to local women and their families. Deanna loved her family and friends, reaching out to them and supporting them on a daily basis. An animal lover, she treated her dogs like family members and was passionate about their well-being. Deanna was a talented artist and painter, and was enthusiastic about history and lifelong learning. She loved spending time with family and friends at Kenray Lake. Deanna’s friendships and connections with others were extremely important to her, and she shared incredible levels of love and respect with all who knew her. She always carried with her a smile and laughter that will never be forgotten. Surviving Deanna are her husband, David Buck of Indianapolis; her daughter, Lillie Bleu Buck of Champaign, Ill.; her son, David Buck of San Diego, Calif.; a sister, Bobbi (Kevin) Wayman of Indianapolis; a brother, Billy (Linda) Connors of Bedford; and 14 nieces and nephews. Ilene Houpt Jan. 26, 1922 — Sept. 30, 2012 Ilene W. Houpt, 90, of Bedford, died at 9 a.m. on Sunday at Garden Villa in Bedford. Born Jan. 26, 1922, in Peerless, she was the daughter of Carl V. and Fay (Anderson) Fry. She married Lloyd M. Houpt on Sept. 13, 1941, and he preceded her in death on Dec. 15, 1976. She was a librarian at the Needmore Elementary School over 25 years retiring in 1989. She was a very active member in the Avoca Baptist Church. Survivors include two daughters, Nancy Merchen and husband Bob of Savannah, Ga. and Patty Byers and husband Dick of Portland, Ore.; one son, David Houpt of Mitchell; identical twin sister, Irene Ray of Bedford; and niece, Cheryl Moffett of Connersville; grandchildren, Dr. Todd Merchen and wife Dr. Lee Ann Merchen of Augusta, Ga., Bret Byers of Bozeman, Mont., Brad Byers of Loveland, Colo., and Ryan and Darren Houpt of Bloomington; and “adopted” granddaughter, Roz Turner of Bedford; and great-grandchildren, Peyton and Kain Houpt, and Patrick and Georgia Merchen. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a granddaughter, Alison Merchen; a brother, Joe Fry; and a sister, Louise Benbow. Born Dec. 9, 1950, in Indianapolis, she was the daughter of the late Marvin C. and Mary C.E. (Guffey) Brown. She married Fred F. Lawler on Dec. 2, 1976. Jeanne was a mom, a friend, a sister and a beloved wife. She enjoyed crocheting, reading books, playing bingo and making crafts. She loved to get others together to make baked goods and candy for the holidays. She truly loved her family and friends and especially her grandchildren who called her Nana. She would reach out to help anyone whenever she could. There was no such thing as a stranger to Jeanne; she was always smiling, friendly and loyal to others. She was always trying to do something for someone else. Jeanne’s love had no boundaries and is what she will be remembered for, to know her was to love her and she never expected anything in return. She was a homemaker, and an avid antique collector along with her husband, Tony, for many years, and loved the outdoors, especially flower gardening. Born Nov. 21, 1926, in Bedford, he was the son of Walter Paul and Anna (Mason) Terrell. He married Alice Mason on Feb. 24, 1947, and she preceded him in death on Oct. 5, 2009. He was a sheet metal worker for Triangle & Leahy in Bedford and a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving during World War II. He was a member of the First Church of God, Sheet Metal Workers Union Local No. 20 and a past board member of the Salvation Army. Jones Aug.22, 1923 — Sept. 30, 2012 Thomas E. “Tom” Jones, age 89, of Bedford, passed away at 6 p.m. on Sunday at his residence after a lengthy illness. Tom was born on Aug. 22, 1923, in Carlisle, to Guy and Fern Esther (Niewald) Jones. He married Mabel Worley on May 17, 1945, in New London, Conn., and she preceded him in death on May 4, 2003. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served on the USS Babbitt. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and was the Minister for 25 years. He enjoyed fishing, cooking, camping, spending time with his family and friends, and taking the Tiger Ear Booth to festivals and talking with everyone. He retired from GM Powertrain in Bedford. He previously owned a watch and clock repair shop in Bedford. He continued that business at home and made many friends. He also worked at Whitney Tool & Die. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during World War II and a member of the Silverville Baptist Church. Virginia Hembree March 29, 1923 — Sept. 30, 2012 Virginia “Jenny” (Sanders) Hembree, 89, of Mitchell and formerly of Loogootee, died at 4:50 a.m. on Sunday at Mitchell Manor Nursing Home in Mitchell. She was born March 29, 1923, in Martin County, to Henry and Nancy (Sanders) Truelove. On Sept. 30, 1939, she married Robert Vernon Hembree and he survives. On the date of her death, September 30, they would have celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary. She attended Loogootee High School and was a member of the Loogootee United Methodist Church and the Jacob Finger United Methodist Church in Mitchell. Virginia and her husband were turkey farmers and business owners working in the Feed and Grain business in Loogootee, Orleans and Mitchell. Virginia retired from the Mitchell School Corporation where she worked 24 years as a cook and dietician. She enjoyed taking care of her family and working in her garden. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Surviving with her husband, Robert Vernon Hembree; are two sons, Larry G. Hembree of Orleans and Randall Hembree and wife Gina of Bloomington; five grandchildren, Larry D. Hembree and wife Stephanie of Loogootee, James Randall Hembree of Orleans, Landon Hembree, currently serving with the U.S. Naval Special Warfare in Guam, Lisa R. Ader and husband Brian of Loogootee, and Lyndsee Hawkins and husband Wes of Bloomington; seven great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren, with two more to be born in the near future. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Nancy (Sanders) Truelove; one son, James V.
