Phyllis A. (Wood) Adkins

Sept. 8, 1929 — July 29, 2016

Phyllis A. (Wood) Adkins, 86, of Bloomington, passed away on Friday, July 29, 2016, at the IU Health Hospice House, with her family by her side.

Phyllis was born September 8, 1929, in Bloomington and was the daughter of the late Dewey and Alpha Mae (Dewar) Wood. She was a 1947 graduate of Bloomington High School and worked for over 40 years as a cook for various fraternities and sororities at Indiana University. Phyllis loved to quilt, crochet, read and cook, but time spent with family was her greatest joy.

She married Russell Adkins on June 19, 1947, and they were married for 66 years until his death on August 20, 2013.

Survivors include five children, Gloria (Bryan) Elkins of Spencer, Gary (Jan) Adkins of Spencer, Kathy Kelley of Bedford, David (Helen) Adkins of Spencer and Karen O’Brien of Connersville. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren, one stepgrandson, 17 great-grandchildren and three sisters, Carolyn Robinson of Bedford, Barbara Schoolcraft of Martinsville and Linda Mitchner of Bloomington.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents and husband; two grandsons, Adam Adkins and Kyle O’Brien; son-in-law Robert Kelley; and 13 brothers and sisters.

Services for Phyllis will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 2, 2016, at The Funeral Chapel of Powell and Deckard, 3000 E. Third St., Bloomington. Pastor Danny Hillenburg will conduct the service, and burial will follow at Valhalla Memory Gardens.

Visitation will be on Monday, August 1, 2016, from 4-8 p.m. and from 10 a.m. until service time on Tuesday at The Funeral Chapel.

Marilyn Joan (Cooper) Moore

July 17, 1934 — July 29, 2016

Marilyn Joan (Cooper) Moore, 82, passed away peacefully with her family at her side at 8:35 a.m. on Friday, July 29, 2016, at Indiana University Hospice House in Bloomington.

The youngest of eight children, Joan was born on July 17, 1934, in Mitchell, to Ralph and Lula (Withers) Cooper. She first demonstrated her strong-willed, independent nature when she contracted polio as a young child and not only survived, but recovered fully learning to walk again through sheer determination not to be defeated by anything that might come her way.

Joan graduated at the top of her class from Mitchell High School in 1951 and was offered a job by Public Services of Indiana as a shorthand writer before graduation due to her academic success. From there, she built a successful career as a court reporter in Bedford. It was there she met her husband, J. Grant Moore, Esquire. After their marriage, Joan retired and stayed home to raise their two children, Jeff and Stephanie. After her husband’s death in 1995, Joan moved to California to be nearer her daughter and grandchildren and remained there until July 2015 when she returned to Indiana.

Although Joan retired from the court system, she loved to tell stories about the many high profile cases she had worked and the characters she encountered. At the urging of her son, she began to write her memories down for a monthly column in Borderline magazine, a Southwest Virginia publication for which she later was appointed Associate Editor. Her columns were so well-received that she compiled the collection of essays to create a book entitled Echoes of the Past. As an author, Joan held a number of book signings in California, Virginia, and Indiana.

We will remember Joan as a loving mother, devoted wife, doting grandmother and great-grandmother, and loyal friend. She was a woman known for her bright red lipstick, her role as entertainment coordinator at the annual Cooper Family Reunion, her passion for politics and celebrity news, her sense of style, her zeal for life, and her overwhelming generosity.

Joan leaves behind her son, Jeff Moore (Cyndee) of Danville, Va.; daughter, Stephanie Moore Smith (Steve) of Coto de Caza, Calif.; grandchildren, Grant “Alex” Moore (Kristina) of Danville, Va., Allison Moore (with whom she shares a birthday) of Richmond, Va., and Liza Koepke (Andrew), Mallorie Smith and Grant Smith of Coto de Caza; great-granddaughters, Danielle and Gracie Moore of Danville, Va.; and her sister, Vivian Lewis of Bloomington; as well as an infinite number of family and friends from coast to coast.

Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. on Sunday, July 31 at the Day & Carter Mortuary. A celebration of Joan’s life will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, August 1 in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with graveside rites to follow at Green Hill Cemetery where Joan will finally be reunited with Grant.

Mayme Lois Ray

Mayme Lois Ray, 91, of Solsberry, passed away Friday, July 29, 2016, at IU Health Bloomington Hospital.

Born Oct. 31, 1924, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Shirley Lester Baker and Sally Edith (Luellen) Baker.

Mayme was a homemaker, and a member of the Solsberry United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women.

Surviving relatives include her son, William D. Ray of Winston-Salem, N.C.; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil Henry Ray on Sept. 30, 1996; one daughter, Virginia Lois Sowders; her sisters, Elsie Mae Ryan and Helen Glove; two brothers, Johnny Baker and Charles Baker; and her parents.

Friends may call from 3-7 p.m. on Sunday, July 31 at Jenkins Funeral Home in Bloomfield and from 9 a.m. Monday until the service at the Solsberry United Methodist Church.

Dennis L. Briscoe

Dennis L. Briscoe, 54, passed away Tuesday evening, July 26, 2016, at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital.

Born March 4, 1962, in Bedford, he was the son of Leroy and Jacqueline (Kern) Briscoe. At the age of five months, he was adopted by Robert and June (Tirey) Briscoe.

Dennis attended Grandview Elementary School, Batchelor Middle School, graduated from Bloomington North High School in 1980 and attended Ivy Tech. He was employed at Naval Surface Warfare Center-Crane.

Survivors include his daughter, Elizabeth Briscoe of Ellettsville; parents, Robert and June Briscoe of Bloomington and Leroy and Shirley Briscoe of Mitchell; sisters, Judy Briscoe of Bloomington, Diana (Larry) Caudell of Mitchell, Denise (Mark) Riker of Bedford, and Debbie Terrell of Bedford.

His mother preceded him in death.

Funeral service will be at 7 p.m. Monday, Aug.1, in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center with Pastor Philip Barker officiating. A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Valhalla Memory Gardens in Bloomington.

Kathleen (Dalton) East

Jan. 6, 1929 — July 23, 2016

Kathleen (Dalton) East, 87, of Bedford, passed away on Saturday, July 23, 2016, at her residence.

Born Jan. 6, 1929, in Bedford, she was the daughter of William and Nanna Lou (Ritchison) Dalton. She married Creston East on Sept. 11, 1948; and he survives. She graduated from Shawswick High School, Class of 1947.

She was a homemaker.

Surviving are husband, Creston East; daughter, Jo Ellen (Kenny) Hammack; son, Roe C. East; grandsons, Scott (Amanda) Bartley, James Bartley, and Andrew (Deidi) East; and great-grandson, Cole Bartley.

She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Dan, Clarence, and Wayne.

A private service was held. Burial was in Leatherwood Cemetery.

James G. Yeadon

July 9, 1943 — July 25, 2016

James Garfield Yeadon, 73, Mitchell, passed from this life in the comfort of his home on Monday, July 25, 2016. He was one of ten children born to Roy Dee Yeadon and Aileen (Wilson) Phelps on July 9, 1943, in Martinsville.

James attended Monrovia schools. At 18 years of age he joined the U.S. Army, serving his country honorably from July 31, 1961 until July 30, 1964.

He was a truck driver, traveling to every U.S. state and through Canada to Seward, Alaska. He also enjoyed farming. He worked for American Fibertech Corporation in Mitchell, from 2008 until his retirement in 2014.

James loved farming, riding horses and square dancing. He was a member of the Stone City Squares in Bedford, and he was a square dance caller.

He was a devoted husband for 15 years to his wife, Sheryl (Whalen) Yeadon of Mitchell. He and Sheryl were married on Nov. 4, 2001. He leaves behind other loving family including two sons, James W. of Mitchell and Robert of Huron; three daughters, Cassie Mae of Indianapolis, and Laura and Carrie Jean of Mitchell; stepdaughter, Elaine of Bloomington; stepson, Elmer of St. Augustine, Fla.; 15 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; five sisters, Barbara of Jamestown, Ky., Judy and Lynn of Martinsville, and Phyllis and Kathy of Monrovia; and three brothers, Kenny and Greg of Martinsville and Harold of Marion County.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Roy “Pudge.”

Family and friends are invited to visit on Saturday, July 30, from noon to 2 p.m. at Neal & Summers Funeral & Cremation Center in Martinsville.

A service celebrating his life, with military honors, will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 30 at the funeral home. In honoring his wishes, he will be cremated following the service.

Rudy David Brown, 62, passed away Thursday afternoon, June 30, 2016, at his residence.

Born July 31, 1953, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Robert James and Johanna (Butterfield) Brown. He married Leona Christine Shabert, and she preceded him in death. He then married Virginia Smith Oct. 13, 2012.

He had been employed as a carpenter with Southwest Services. He graduated from Mitchell High School in 1971.

Rudy was a member of the Bride of Christ Fellowship, and the National Rifle Association.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia Brown of Mitchell; children, Joey Dean Brown of Bedford, Sarah Elizabeth Moody of Bedford, and Crystal Brooke Bissonnette of Orleans; stepson, Andrew Heady of Mitchell; brother, Bobby Brown of Venice, Fla.; grandchildren, Jenna Brown, Victorya Moody, Jon Godsey, David Godsey, Elizabeth Godsey, Gavin Bissonnette, Merrick Bissonnette, Liam Bissonnette, and Charlie Bissonnette.

His parents; wife, Leona Christine Brown; and daughter, Victoria Brown, preceded him in death.

Chadlie ‘Chad’ Kinser

Chadlie “Chad” Kinser of Bloomington passed away at his residence on Monday, July 25, 2016, at the age of 43.

Chad was born in Lawrence County into the home of Phillip Kinser and Shirley Kinser on Nov. 29, 1972.

He was of the Christian Faith and enjoyed sprint car racing, hunting and fishing. He had a love of music and enjoyed being with his family.

He was preceded in death by his father, Phillip Kinser.

Chad is survived by his son, Steven Kinser of Solsberry; mother, Shirley Fisher; stepfather, Don Fisher; brothers, Phillip Kinser of Bloomington and Leon Kinser of Bedford; sister, Pam Kinser of Bloomington; nieces and nephews, Jordan Kinser, Josh Stroud, Natasha Brown, Robbie Hammer, Seth Hammer, and Ana Perez-Rummer.

Margie Houston (Murphy) Hamilton

Margie Houston Hamilton, 94, of Bedford, died Sunday, July 24, 2016, at her residence.

Born Aug. 8, 1921, in Bedford, she was the daughter of Paterson and Anna (Cummings) Murphy. She married Harold Houston on April 19, 1942, and he preceded her in death on Nov. 26, 1987. She later married Charles T. Hamilton on Feb. 14, 1989, and he preceded her in death on Oct. 11, 2009.

She was a graduate of Shawswick High School with the Class of 1939. She retired as an office manager for W.T. Grant & Co. She was a member of the Hillcrest Christian Church.

She loved music and was the organist at the Jerome Church in Greentown for 15 years. She had been a part-time organist at Hillcrest Christian Church since 1991. She enjoyed church activities, painting, and sewing.

Survivors include a son, Gary Wayne Houston and wife Rose of Bedford; a daughter, Anita Houston Lozano of Lake Mary, Fla.; a granddaughter, Shelley Dial of Zionsville; a grandson, Joshua Houston of Bedford; a step-granddaughter, Denise Hodges of Las Vegas, Nev.; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister, Wilma Fordyce of Boothwyn, Pa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; five brothers, Merlin, Harold, Charles Eugene, Fred, and Larry Murphy; a sister, Barbara Little; and a great-grandson, Elliott Dial.

George Boyd Deckard Sr.

George Boyd Deckard Sr., 77, of Bedford, died at 12:26 p.m. on Monday, July 25, 2016, at I.U. Health Bloomington Hospital.

Born Aug. 12, 1938, in Lawrence County, he was the son of James W. and Madelyn (Kinser) Deckard. He married Sharon Hawkins and later married Linda Urbanke.

He was a retired truck driver/mechanic for Elliott Stone Co. He attended Burgoon Baptist Church and enjoyed working on antique cars and tractors and spending time with his family.

Survivors include four sons, Mike Deckard and wife Anna, George Deckard and wife Diana, Tim Deckard and wife Brenda, and Kenny Deckard, all of Bedford; two daughters, Ruth Riley and companion Gaylan Mauer of Bloomington and Theresa Cain and husband Dean of Bedford; six grandchildren, MaKayla, Michael, Cierra, Matthew, Brandy and Bobbi; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, James Deckard and wife Roanna of Bedford; a sister, Julie Spirer of Bedford; and a friend, Paula East.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Cathy Deckard; a brother, Jerry Don Deckard; and a granddaughter, Lisa Deckard.

Michael ‘Mike’ Kristan

Oct. 26, 1930 — July 22, 2016

Michael Kristan, 85, of Bedford, went home to be with the Lord on Friday July 22, 2016, at 5:20 a.m. at IU Health in Bedford.

He was born in Akron, Ohio on Oct. 26, 1930, to Andrew and Anna (Mihoc) Kristan. Mike married Frances Elaine Whitney on Oct. 21, 1961, and she survives.

Mike was a graduate of University of Akron and was an Electrical Engineer; he retired from NWSC Crane in 2011 after 33 years and for the United States Government for 40 years.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, also was a member of Toastmasters International and was involved with the Boy Scouts for many years.

Mike was a member of the Calvary Lutheran Church in Bedford, most important to Mike was his faith and family, he had a heart for sharing the gospel up until the Lord called him home. Mike will be missed by his furry buddies Gunner Blue and Osiris.

Survivors include his wife, Frances E. Kristan of Bedford; children, Holly A. Kristan, Daniel L. (Rene) Kristan, both of Bedford, Terry L. (Kira) Kristan of Leesburg, Va., and Michael (Lou Ann) Kristan of Oolitic, 15 grandchildren, Christopher, Danielle, Dena, Jason, Nathan, Ashley, Ryan, Matthew, Kerissa, William, Samantha, Shyla, Rhiannon, Tatiana-Marie, Kaimana; 25 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mary Kristan Huber of Youngstown, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, George and Andrew Kristan; sister, Ann Burns; great-granddaughter, Adilynne Lee, at birth.

Cremation was chosen with a celebration of Mike’s life held in the fall.

Pauline M. (Reynolds) Wells

Feb. 15, 1925 — July 23, 2016

Pauline M. Wells, 91, of Bedford, passed away on Saturday, July 23, 2016, at IU Health Bedford Hospital.

She was born on Feb. 15, 1925, in Monroe County, as the daughter of Carl (Duke) and Floy Reynolds.

Pauline graduated from Ellettsville High School. She retired from R.C.A. after 20 years of service. She was a caregiver to all those around her. She enjoyed cooking, crocheting and sewing.

She is survived by her daughters, Lena Stevens and Edna Litaker; grandchildren, Jesseca (Emilio Dimas-Guzman) Dimas, Marlena Stevens and Carla Wells; great-grandchildren, Alisha Wells, Josie Martin, Everett Ritter, Breanna Giron, Marcela Giron, Isabel Giron and E.J. Dimas; and sister, Wilma Fleetwood.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jesse Wells; and brother, Walter (Bud) Reynolds.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, July 28, at Allen Funeral Home and Crematory, 4155 S. Old State Road 37, Bloomington. Burial will follow at Clear Creek Cemetery.

Alma Maxine (Connell) Miller

Jan. 28, 1927 — July 24, 2016

Alma “Maxine” Miller, 89, passed away Sunday evening, July 24, 2016, at Indiana University Health Bedford Hospital.

Born Jan. 28, 1927, in Mitchell, she was the daughter of Floren and Katie (Clouse) Connell. She married her childhood sweetheart, Robert “Eugene” Smith, Jan. 3, 1946, and together they had two children, Genia Dee and Timothy Austin. Eugene passed away on Nov. 9, 1963. She later married her longtime companion Dennis Miller on Aug. 26, 1984, and he preceded her in death Sept. 12, 1984.

Mackie, as she was known, owned and operated “Mackie’s Beauty Shop” for 62 years with her daughter, Genia, working alongside her for many years.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Mitchell since the age of 14. She was also a lifelong member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion and Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW. She became a member of the Mitchell Senior Citizens and spent five years as secretary. She dearly loved going to the Friday and Saturday night dances. She was very much a people person and loved chatting with all of the members.

Survivors include her daughter, Genia (Vincent) King of Mitchell; grandchildren, Brayden (Kristen) King of Bedford and Bethany New of Mitchell; great-grandsons, Landon, Leo, and Wylie New and great-granddaughters, Madeleine and Lilliana King, and Corinne and Payton Smith; sister, Evelyn (Gordon) Harris of Bedford; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husbands; son; parents; brother, Gilbert Connell; and sisters, Ruth May, Marie Barnett and Thelma Lindley.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 29, at Haverly Funeral Chapel with Donnie Hall officiating. Burial will be in Mitchell Cemetery.

Tom Triplett

March 29, 1926 — July 24, 2016

Tom Triplett, 90, passed away Sunday, July 24, 2016, at his residence.

Born March 29, 1926, in Letcher County, Ky., he was the son of Jack and Ona (Gibson) Triplett. He married Carol Sue Baker April 20, 1957, and she preceded him in death Aug. 16, 1998.

Tom was a coal miner and a U. S. Army veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 250 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9107. Tom was also a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.

Survivors include his children, Thomas (Sandy) Triplett of Paoli, Brenda G. (Rod Kellams) Dotts of Mitchell, Dewey J. (Angie G.) Triplett of Huron, Linda F. (Casey) Wright of Huron, Michael (Tina F.) Triplett of Huron, and Glendal C. (Joetta Newsome) Hall of Virgie, Ky.; 15 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren, and sister, Etta Rea Kinser of Independence, Ky.

His parents; wife; siblings, Troy, Roy, Jack Jr., Bill, Earl, Elwood, Carl, Georgia, Pearl, Arbutuss, Elizabeth, Freida, Virtie, and Polly; and grandsons, Daniel Richard Triplett and Joshua Eric Triplett, preceded him in death.

Jerry D. Fox

Sept. 17, 1939 — July 22, 2016

After a courageous battle with cancer, Jerry (Pap) passed away peacefully at the Hospice House in Bloomington on Friday, July 22.

He was a member of the Local 241 International Union of Operating Engineers and retired from Rogers Group after 35 years. He was also a dedicated NLCS school bus driver for over 20 years.

Jerry thoroughly enjoyed his time farming with one of his best friends, Gary.

Larry Lee Stilwell, 77, passed away at 2:07 p.m. Saturday, July 23, 2016, at his residence. He enjoyed life in spite of coping with Parkinson’s disease for 35 years.

Born Feb. 18, 1939, in Olney, Ill., he was the son of James Aubrey and Opal Grace (Thompson) Stilwell. He married Mary Alice Poland June 2, 1973.

Larry retired with 30 years of service in Crawford County schools as a music teacher and band director. He graduated from East Richland High School in 1957, and Indiana University in 1963 with a Bachelor of Music Education degree. Larry received a Master of Music degree in 1966 from the American Conservatory of Music.

He enjoyed the Lawrence County Checker Club, and playing the piano and harmonica. Larry was a member of the Bedford Free Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Alice Stilwell of Mitchell; daughters, Jennifer Lynn (David) Wiese of Indianapolis, Christa Lee (Matthew) Main of Paoli, and Shelly Kay (Matthew) Fish of Bedford; grandchildren, Brooke, Jackson, Lindsey and Andrew Wiese of Indianapolis, Josiah and Samuel Main of Paoli, and Alaina Fish of Bedford; and brother, James H. “Jim” (Linda) Stilwell of Mesa, Ariz.

His parents preceded him in death.

Martha Lois Tritle, 76, passed away at 10:50 a.m. Saturday, July 23, 2016, at Indiana University Health Hospice House in Bloomington.

Born Dec. 30, 1939, in Mitchell, she was the daughter of Ralph Henry and Kathryn Pearl (Burton) Nolan. She married Robert Joe Tritle Sept. 20, 1958, and he preceded her in death June 6, 2014.

She had been employed at Carpenter Body Works, Crawford-Morris Lumber Company and retired from Mitchell Motor Sales/Bedford Ford. Martha Lois was a 62-year member of the First Baptist Church and a 1958 graduate of Mitchell High School.

Survivors include her children, Nancy Jo (Brian) Porter of Orleans, Timothy Earl (Vicki) Tritle of Seymour, and twin sons, John Robert (Natalie) Tritle of Bedford and Jason Ralph (Angela) Tritle of Spencer; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and one great-grandson on the way; and siblings, Donald E. Nolan of Mitchell, Judith Ann (Larry) Wood of Ohio, and Carolyn Sue (John) Sims of Southport.

Her parents and husband preceded her in death.

Anne S. (Pigman) Black

June 1, 1925 — July 21, 2016

Anne S. Black, 91, of Bloomington, passed away in her home on July 21, 2016, with her beloved husband, Lauren Sr., by her side.

She is survived by three daughters, Carol Durrell of Raleigh, N.C., Kathy Freeman of Bloomington and Sara Black of Redondo Beach, Calif. ; her son, Larry Jr. is deceased. Anne leaves behind seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Anne has two sisters, Judy Shereikis of Evanston, Ill., and Janet Zoble of Topeka, Kan.; and a brother, Stuart Pigman of Fort Myers, Fla. Her brothers, Herbert and Richard, are deceased.

In 1947, Anne received her RN from Henry Ford Hospital School of Nursing where she was president of her class, and later received her BSN and MSN from Indiana University School of Nursing.

Anne dedicated her professional life to the elevation and enhancement of nursing care for critically ill children and their families. She was a visionary leader, and recognized the role of families in the healing process very early. She was instrumental in expanding family visitation in hospitals to 24-hours and opened the door for families to actively collaborate with the interdisciplinary team.

She began her career as a Public Health Nurse, and later served as Maternal Child and Health Consultant for Marion County, and Chairman of Nursing at James Whitcomb Riley Memorial Hospital for Children. She later became Director of Nursing at Indiana University Hospitals, and completed her career at Boston Children’s Hospital as Vice President for Nursing.

Anne was also associate professor, Division of Nursing, at Curry College in Milton, Mass.; associate professor, School of Science and Technology, at University of Massachusetts; and associate professor at Boston University.

She was an active member of Sigma Theta Tau and Pi Theta Lambda. She was a member of First United Presbyterian Church, Bedford.

In 1989, Anne and her husband, Larry, retired to Bedford and moved to Bloomington in 2006. She was a lifelong learner who loved to read, and she instilled that joy in her children. First and foremost, she loved to spend time with her husband, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and pets in retirement, and they loved to spend time with her. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

A viewing will be held at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home in Bedford, from 3-5 p.m.on Tuesday, July 26. A Memorial Service is planned for August.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, or Shriner’s Hospital for Children.

Thomas Noah Seller, 76, of Jasper, died Thursay.

He was born in Martin County on Sept . 24, 1939, to Benjamin C. and Hanah Inez (Melton) Sellers, He attended Trinity Springs High School. On Aug. 5, 1958, he married Betty Madge Collingsworth and she proceeded him in death Dec. 21, 2013.

Thomas owned and operated Sellers Construction before he retired. He also was a Mason.

He is survived by one son, Tony and Teresa Sellers of Washington; and four grandchildren, Trevor Sellers of Greenwood,Taivon Sellers of Washington, Sophia Sellers of Mitchell and Daniel McAtee and Juliann of Washington.

He was proceded in death by his parents; his wife; and brother, John.

George W. Sargent, 79, of Bloomfield, passed away at 3:33 a.m. on Friday, July 22, 2016, at IU Health Bloomington Hospital.

Born July 16, 1937, in Bedford, he was the son of Wesley Sargent and Donna A. (Wagner) Walker.

He was an electronic technician for NSWC Crane, retiring in 1998. He was an Air Force veteran and a member of the Bloomfield Horseshoe Club.

Surviving relatives include: his former wife, Peggy Branstetter Sargent, of Bloomfield; one son, Scott Sargent (Karen), of Bloomfield; one daughter, Valerie Robinson (Kirk), of Bloomfield; one brother, Mike Sargent, of New Pekin; a stepbrother, Jim Walker, of Connecticut; a grandson, Trent Hamlin, of Bloomfield; a stepgrandson, Kyle Robinson; and several nieces and nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Opal Dawn Hamlin, and his parents.

Paul J. Byrd, 91, of Willard, Missouri, died July 17 at his home after a long illness with Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s under the care of hospice.

Paul was born April 28, 1925, in Lawrence County, the oldest son of Manuel and Thelma Byrd.

Paul was a plumber and a master locksmith after serving in World War II.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lucille (Chock) Byrd in 1986, in Forest Lake, Minnesota; and a brother, Willmer Dale Byrd, of Bloomington.

Surviving are Paul’s second wife, Nancy H. Byrd of Willard, Missouri; his son, Paul M. Byrd, of Hibbing, Minnesota; and daughter, Susan Jansen, of Elk River, Minnesota; two sisters, Betty Jean Pennington, of Needmore, and Phyllis Clark, of Bloomington; a brother, Larry, in Murrells Hamlet, South Carolina; three stepchildren; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Service will be at 11 a.m. on Aug. 3 at River Side Church in Big Lake, Minnesota, as the majority of Paul’s family lives in Minnesota.

Sheila June (Arford) Scherschel, 59, of Bedford, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Thursday, July 21, 2016.

She was born Nov. 24, 1956, to Raymond and Mae Arford of Odon. Sheila married Gary Scherschel on Oct. 18, 1980, and he survives.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Mae Arford; one sister, Shirley Phillips of Indianapolis; her mother- and father-in law, Ed and Pauline Scherschel; and three brothers-in-law, Tim, Karl and Harold Scherschel.

Sheila (Arford) Scherschel graduated from North Daviess High School in 1974 and Indiana University in 1978. She was a supervisor at General Motors for seven years prior to starting her family. Sheila and her husband, Gary, have two children, Andrea Lynn and Joshua Lee.

She was active in her home church, City Church for all Nations in Bloomington.

Sheila Scherschel is survived by her husband, Gary; and two children, Andrea Stierwalt and husband Zed and Josh Scherschel, all of Bedford; a sister, Sharon Boruff and husband Tom; and a brother, Carl Arford, all of Odon. Also surviving are two brothers-in-law, Bernie Scherschel and Bennie Scherschel and wife Rose, of Bedford; sister-in-law, Ann Scherschel of Indianapolis; 12 nieces and nephews; 17 great-nieces and nephews; and one great-great-niece.

Johnson of Bedford, Lisa Harz of Fort Wayne, and Vicki Croft of Florid; and brothers, Marvin (Karen) Johnson of Colo., Rick (Ida) Johnson of Bedford and Greg (Georgie) Johnson of Bedford.

He was preceded in death by his father; son, Nicholas Johnson; and sister, Connie ( James ) Pond.

He belonged to the Woodville Baptist Church.

James Eugene “Gene” Stogsdill Sr., 95, of Bloomington passed away Thursday, July 21, 2016, at White River Lodge in Bedford.

Born, June 19, 1921, in Bloomington, he was the son of James and Ruth (Walker) Stogsdill.

Gene was an Airman/Ammunition Specialist for the United States Navy serving during World War II.

He was a member of Bricklayer and Allied Craftsman Chapter No. 3 in Indianapolis, International Bricklayers and Trowel Trades, and the Civilian Conservation Corp.

Survivors include one son, James “Jim” Stogsdill Jr. (Brenda) of Bedford; two grandsons, Craig Stogsdill and Mark Stogsdill (Amy), two great-grandsons, Colton Stogsdill and Devin Fisher, all of Bloomington; and one niece, Donna Stogsdill.

Gene was preceded in death by his wife, Martha (Wood) Stogsdill (2003); brothers and sisters, Martha Moler, Anna Lawson, Marian Stogsdill, Henry Stogsdill, Don Stogsdill, and Allen Stogsdill.

Judy Marie Underwood, 57, of Indianapolis, passed away Thursday, July 21, 2016, at Bliss Place, Bedford.

Born July 29, 1958, in Bedford, she was the daughter of Walter “Ike” and Sherry (Drehobl) Underwood.

She was a graduate of Bedford North Lawrence High School, Class of 1976. Judy graduated from IUPUI School of Nursing, Class of 1982. She worked as a Registered Nurse at St. Vincent Hospital, Indianapolis. She was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church.

Judy had a valiant fight against cancer for 8 ½ years. She lived life to its fullest. She loved animals and cared for all people through her extensive nursing career. She loved visiting casinos across the nation and sharing her winnings. She was an avid sports fan and enjoyed attending Colts, Pacers, and Fever games.

Throughout her years, she made several friends and many of them considered her as a sister. She loved her family and was with them and her closest friends to the end.

Surviving are her mother, Sherry Underwood of Bedford; two brothers, Jim (Deborah) Underwood of Bedford and John Underwood of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; two sisters, Jane (Larry) Root of Mitchell and Jo Underwood of Bedford; two nephews, Ben (Laurel) Underwood of Bloomington and Chad (Lauren) Underwood of Greenwood; three nieces, Jessica (Amit) Patel of Brownsburg, Kristi (C.J.) Lee of Bedford and Amy (Westin) Williamson, of Noblesville; several great-nieces and nephews; also surviving are aunts and uncles, Jim and Sally Bullock of Oolitic, Donna Brown of Medora, and Don and Reva Underwood of Bedford; and several cousins.

She was preceded in death by her father, Walter “Ike” Underwood; grandmother, Minnie Drehobl; and one niece, Stacie.

Born June 30, 1923, in Tunnelton, she was the daughter of Thomas Joshua and Myrtle (Jean) Faris. She married Frank Winfred Sallee in 1939, and he preceded her in death Sept. 18, 1999.

Bobbi had been employed as a bookkeeper and was a beautician. She was a member of the First Baptist Church.

Survivors include her son, Frank R. Sallee of Bedford, and three grandchildren.

Born Feb. 6, 1929, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Elzada (Conner) Lagle. She was raised by her grandparents, Frank and Catherine Anna Conner. She married Lloyd W. Lackey who preceded her in death on June 27, 1969.

Mary Alice was a homemaker who loved the outdoors, camping and animals. She took in many strays in over the years.

Surviving are three sons, Dennis (Susan) Lackey of Anderson, Lane (Crystal) Lackey of Springville, and Randy Lackey of Bedford; two daughters, Constance (Gerald) Kern and Lana (Michael) Eggers, both of Bedford; 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; two brothers, Bill and Dean Lagle; and one sister, Shirley Lagle.

Lois was a bookkeeper and had been employed at Fitch Chevrolet and Tom Lane Datsun. She graduated from Campbellsburg High School in 1942 and was a member of the First Christian Church in Columbus. She was a former member of Epsilon Sigma Alpha Sorority.

Lois Ellen Embree, 85, of Bedford, died Sunday, July 17, 2016, at White River Lodge in Bedford.

Born Nov. 24, 1930, in Woodsfield, Ohio, she was the daughter of Bryant and Lula Hupp.

She graduated from Beallsville (Ohio) High School, and joined the Completion of Women’s Army Corps Training Program for Clerks and Basic Training. She was the first female from Monroe County, Ohio to enlist.

She was of the Methodist Faith. She retired as a bookkeeper from Puritan Uniform Rental in Louisville, Ky.

Surviving are two daughters, Melina (Michael) Jones and Nancy Hoover; grandchildren Leigh Ann (Damian) Frederick and Zachary Jones; great-grandchildren, Michaleigh Vallimont and Lillian Vallimont, and Stella Frederick; brothers, Lloyd Hupp and Ralph Hupp, both of Washington state and Terry Hupp of Ohio; and sisters, Sarah Eason of Virginia, and Marilyn Lysinger, Judy Collins, and Janice Kardel, all of Ohio.

Burial will occur at a later date.

Darlene K. (Steele) McSoley, 83, of Bedford, died at 11:18 a.m. Friday, July 15, 2016, at I.U. Bloomington, Hospice House, Bloomington.

Born March 17, 1933, in Bedford, she was the daughter of Ruel and Marie (Ellis) Steele. She married Vollie McSoley on Dec. 19, 1953; he died Aug. 31, 1993.

Darlene was a school educator for many years and then worked in the Psychology Department at I.U., Bloomington; she received her B.A. from I.U. in 1954 and her Master’s Degree in Education in 1960; she received her J.D. from I.U. in 1983 and practiced law in Bedford.

She was a member of First Baptist Church, Bedford, where she sang in the choir; was a member of Lawrence County Bar Association; was a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) attorney over 30 years; and a member of the Board of Directors of Green Hill Cemetery Association. She was very active in community affairs.

Surviving are her son, Patrick (Paige) McSoley of Bloomington; one grandson, Connor (Kylie) McSoley of Bedford; and two brothers, Byron (Ann) Steele and Brent (Sally) Steele, both of Bedford.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, July 22, at First Baptist Church in Bedford, with pastor Lee Brown officiating. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery.

She was born on Jan. 1, 1932, in Dubois, to Lawrence and Emily (Merchant) Baer.

Mary Jane was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Mary Lou (Wineinger) McPherson; and several brothers and sisters.

She attended the Orleans and Mitchell Churches of the Nazarene when she was able.

Mary Jane worked at Cornwell’s in Paoli, Smith Cabinets in Salem and also at Wal-Mart in Paoli.

She is survived by one son, Steve Wineinger of Summerville, S.C.; one daughter, Margie (Wineinger) Briner of Mitchell; several brothers; sisters; nephews and nieces; nine grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.

Funeral ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 20, at the Dillman-Scott Funeral Home with cremation to follow.

He retired from U.S. Gypsum and was a 1971 graduate of Mitchell High School.

Marjorie L. Turner

Marjorie L. Turner passed away peacefully on July 17, 2016.

Marjorie was born Marjorie Dalton to Kurt and Elizabeth Dalton on March 15, 1926, in Bedford. During World War II, she was married to Emery C. Turner, who died in 1995. During the war, Marjorie worked at the Crane Naval Depot, making ammunition.

After Emery returned from the war, the couple lived in Bedford until 1961, when they moved briefly to California and then to Wisconsin in 1962. In Wisconsin, Marjorie went to work for Sears, where she worked for more than 25 years, rising to the position of division manager.

Marjorie was preceded in death by her mother and father as well as siblings, Edna, Bethel, Donald, Emmet, Claire and George.

Survivors include Marjorie’s three children, Redgy (Robert) Nelson, Stephen (Jane) Turner, and Michael (Michelle) Turner; as well as seven grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.

Although Marjorie was an avid gardener much of her life and loved flowers, the family asks that in lieu of flowers donations be sent to the Heart Association.

Born April 26, 1933, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Perry and Evelene (Miller) Baker. She married Wilmer “Willie” Stalcup on May 10, 1959, and he preceded her in death on Jan. 18, 2014.

She was a clerk-typist at NWSC Crane and a member of the Spice Valley Church of Christ.

Survivors include a son, Gregory “Greg” Stalcup of Fort Wayne; a daughter, Michelle Ikerd of Bedford; three grandchildren, Joel Stalcup of Memphis, Tenn., Samara Perkins and husband Blake of Bedford, and Brianne Ikerd of Bedford; a great-granddaughter, Addison Perkins; three sisters, Marilyn Goff, Iva Baker and Lula Belle Owens, all of Williams; a brother, Scotty Baker and wife Joyce, of Williams; and several nieces and nephews.

Ivan Ducker, 91, a lifelong resident of Oolitic, died at 6:10 a.m. on Friday, July 15, 2016, at Meadowood in Bloomington.

Born April 15, 1925, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Joseph Earl and Roma Marie (Richardson) Ducker. He was the loving husband of the late JoAnne Hatfield, whom he married in 1946. She preceded him in death on November 2, 2014. He was a tool and die maker at General Motors. He was a veteran of WWII, serving with the U.S. Navy, with a knack for telling a great story. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Bedford and a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather.

Survivors include two sons, Mark Ducker and wife, Mary, of Ypsilanti, MI, and Kerry Ducker and wife, Debbie, of Bloomington; four grandchildren, Ben, Zak and wife, Courtney, Scott, and Kara; and a great-grandchild, Evie. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife.

William “Bill” L. Wilkinson, age 67, of Bloomington, Indiana, passed away peacefully on July 14, 2016, at his home.

Bill was born July 3, 1949, in Roswell, New Mexico, to Leona and Luther Wilkinson. His childhood was spent in Roswell, New Mexico, and later in Denver, Colorado. His family eventually moved to Fergus Falls, Minnesota, where he met his high school sweetheart, Leah Eide, whom he married on June 26, 1971. Bill graduated from Moorhead State University, Moorhead, Minnesota, with a Degree in Marketing. Retailing was what Bill knew best, starting with his earliest job at his parents’ hardware store in Denver, Colorado, and working at Fleet Farm in Fergus Falls, Minnesota, while in high school and, during college years, at Ace Hardware in Moorhead, Minnesota. Upon graduation from college, he began his 29-year career with J.C. Penney in Fargo, North Dakota, being promoted and transferred to several locations in the Midwest, with his last relocation to Bloomington, Indiana, where he managed the Bedford J.C. Penney store for several years. His most recent retail employment was with Target in Bloomington, before retiring in 2014. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leona and Luther Wilkinson.

He is survived by Leah, his wife of 45 years, son Joe Wilkinson (Chicago, Illinois), daughter Dana Wilkinson (Bloomington, Indiana), brother James Wilkinson (wife Sharon) and numerous nieces and nephews as well as grand-­nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at Faith Lutheran Church in Bloomington, IN, on Saturday, July 23, 2016, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the building fund at Faith Lutheran Church or Hospice House. Billy Gene Wells

Billy “Bill” G. Wells, 90, of Linton, passed away Thursday, July 14, 2016 at Greene County General Hospital. He was born September 5, 1925, in Lyons, Indiana, to Claude and Bonnie (Hatfield) Wells. On January 23, 1982, he married Sherrill Clodfelder, a devoted wife and mother.

Billy graduated from Lyons High School in 1943. He immediately served his country from December 6, 1943, to May 3, 1946, in the U.S. Army’s 75th Infantry Division in England, France, Belgium and Germany. Billy was in the Battle of the Bulge, and later he was wounded in the Colmar Pocket. He was taken to the 2nd General Hospital in Nancy, France, and later to Warwickshire, England, to recuperate. For his service to our nation in World War II, Bill was the recipient of a Purple Heart, two Bronze Stars and numerous other medals. In 2007 and as lasting gratitude by the government of France, Billy received the distinguished Knight of the French Legion of Honour Medal for his help in liberating France from German occupation. As a veteran, Billy was recognized with the 75th Division World War II Man of the Year Award in 2011. He was always proud of his service and reflected that for a “backward country kid from a small town in Indiana” that he “had enough good times, made a lot of friends (American and foreign), saw a lot of cities, countries and countrysides to make up for the bad times.”

Billy was the consummate fisherman throughout his life but also enjoyed exploring America by car and travel trailer with Sherrill, especially the American West and its related history. He was a dedicated family historian, spending countless hours tracing the roots of the Hatfield and Wells families.

Billy is survived by his wife, Sherrill, and the following children: Stephen (Bethany) Wells of Socorro, New Mexico; Claudia Susan (Jeremiah) Young of Bloomington, Indiana; Lauri Wells of Woodbridge, Virginia; and Cindy (Kevin) Pedigo of Bedford, Indiana. He was step-father to: Debra (Brian) Potter of Akron, Indiana; Peggy (Donald) Roberts of Sarasota, Florida; David Clodfelder of Punta Gorda, Florida; and Dan Clodfelder (deceased). Billy is survived by four grandchildren, Christopher Wells, Caitlin (Austin) Petring, Nicole Young and Zachery Young, as well as five step-grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Helen Gregory, Lorene Minella, Thelma Wright and Nora Shepherd.

Russell Jeffrey “Jeff” Blackburn, 59, of Lafayette, was born into eternal life at 11 p.m. on Wednesday, July 13, 2016, in Bedford.

Born September 25, 1956, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Russell and Marilyn (Trisler) Blackburn. He married Dolly Moutardier on August 20, 1977. He was an engineer for Duke Energy for 40 years. He was a member of the Linnwood Church of Christ. Jeff was an active member in the March of Dimes campaign and Habitat for Humanity, and he was lovingly known as Peffy, Gimpy, Uncle Jeff and Colonel Clodd. He was a longtime “Survivor” enthusiast with 15 years of “Survivor” audition tape submissions.

Survivors include his wife, Dolly, of Lafayette; a son, Corey Blackburn of Lafayette; a daughter, Emily Griffith and husband, Steve, of Indianapolis; two granddaughters, Isla and Mazo Griffith; his parents, Russell and Marilyn Blackburn; a sister, Julia Wimmer and husband, Dave, of Zionsville; two brothers, Jody Blackburn and wife, Becky, of Mitchell, and Jay Blackburn and wife, Irma, of Bedford; and lots of nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews. Monty Barnett, 73, of Crawfordsville passed away Thursday morning at St. Vincent’s Hospital.

Mr. Barnett served his country in the U.S. Air Force. He owned and operated B & M Powered Shutes, where he was a flight instructor. He also worked previously at Pace Dairy. He attended the Shawswick School, near Bedford, Indiana.

Born Feb. 21, 1943, in Bedford, he was the son of George E. Barnett and Joanna F. Fultz Barnett. He married the former Janice Maxwell on Aug. 30, 1996. She survives.

Joseph Kenneth Hendricks

Joseph Kenneth Hendricks died peacefully on June 30 in Clemmons, N.C. Joe was born Jan. 27, 1927, in Mitchell, Ind. He joined the Marine Corps and fought in WW II and Korea, receiving two purple hearts for injuries sustained in combat. He graduated from Indiana University with a degree in education and taught sixth grade for many decades at Fieler Elementary School in Merrillville, Ind.

Joe also worked summers and weekends as a metallurgist at US Steel in Gary. Before leaving Merrillville to retire to Bloomington, Ind., he was elected to and served two terms as Merrillville Town Councilman. Joe moved to Winston-Salem, N.C., to be near his daughter Bobette Hyde for the last few years of his life.

His beloved wife of 64 years, Suslanlee Hendricks (nee Brumfield) preceded him in death this year on Feb. 14. Joe is survived by his four children, Bobette Hyde of Winston-Salem, N.C., Lynnette Hendricks of St. Augustine, Fla., Heidi Howard (nee Dras, nee Boles) of Winston-Salem, N.C. and Jason Hendricks of Bedford, Ind., his grandson, Nathan Boles of Indianapolis, Ind. and his Boston Terrier, Jake. He will live on in the hearts of his loved ones.

Glen Edward Mitchell, 76, of Bedford, died at 5:20 a.m. on Wednesday, July 13, 2016, at his residence.

Born June 17, 1940, in Bedford, he was the son of Glen D. “Bunk” and Esther S. (Stipp) Mitchell. He was a graduate of Fayetteville High School with the class of 1958 and Indiana State University in 1966. He was employed with audio/visual recording and electronics in Terre Haute and Richmond.

Martha Ellen Bireley, 83, of Bedford, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 12, 2016, at 12:10 p.m. at home surrounded by her loved ones.

Born on Oct. 12, 1932, in Indianapolis, she was the daughter of William (Albert) and Gwendolyn (Martin) Clemons. She married Kenneth Bireley on Dec. 19, 1954, and he preceded her in death on March 17, 2005.

Martha was a homemaker and a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Bedford. She loved to spend time with her kids, grandkids and great-grandkids.

Survivors include her children, Gina (Glenn) Irwin of Bedford, Benita Stahl of LaPorte, Lola (Bruce) Megnin of Bedford, Kenneth Bireley of Needmore, Kevin Bireley of Bloomington and Ralph Bireley of Greenwood; sisters, Kathleen Hurt, Wanda Griffin, Wanita Adkins, Myra Chastain, Judith Saters; her companion, Donnie Merry of Bedford; her grandchildren, Joseph (Jennifer) DeFord, Nate (Marce) Taylor, Clarrisa (Brian) Miller, Evan Irwin, Allison Irwin, Coty Bireley, Tabitha Bireley, Justin Andis, Zachary Wagner, Skylar Bireley and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, granddaughter Amber Bubalo, sisters Louise Axsom and Brenda Stalcup and brother William Albert Clemons, Jr.

Cremation was chosen with a private burial at a later date. There will be a celebration of life conducted on Saturday July 16, 2016, at Cresthaven Funeral Home.

He married Mildred L. Coulter in 1942 and she preceded him in death on Dec. 31, 2011.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Thereasa Gail; his parents, two sisters and two brothers.

He was retired from Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane, IN in 1979 and was a member of the Priory of St. John Roman Catholic Church.

The Rosary will be prayed at 9:30 a.m. Friday, with funeral services at 10 a.m. both at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home, with Fr. Rick Eldred officiating. Burial will be in Cresthaven Memory Gardens, Bedford.

Lori Lynn Rawlins, 46, passed away on Thursday, June 16, 2016, in Palm Coast, Florida.

She was born on Nov. 28, 1969, in Bloomington, Indiana, to Army Col. (Ret.) Stephen and Geni Clouse.

Her father served as a career military officer, allowing Lori to grow up in a variety of locations, including Georgia, Indiana, Panama, North Carolina, Texas, Florida, Kansas, Italy, New Jersey and Tennessee. She was an avid reader and animal lover. Lori graduated from Northeast High School in Clarksville, Tennessee, in 1987. She attended the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, and she completed her bachelor’s degree at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tennessee, in 1999, majoring in psychology, which led to her professional career in social work.

She married Norman Carter Rawlins III on Dec. 23, 1992. They had two children, Lauren Brittany Rawlins, born July 23, 1993, and Norman Carter Rawlins IV, born Nov. 5, 1994.

Lori and her children moved to Palm Coast, Florida, in 2000, where she began work with St. Augustine Center for Living and the Florida Department of Children and Families. She strove to improve the lives of the physically and mentally disabled in St. Johns, Flagler and Volusia counties in Florida.

Lori is survived by her parents, Stephen and Geni Clouse; daughter, Lauren Brittany Rawlins; and son, Norman Carter Rawlins IV, all of Palm Coast, Florida.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Clovis “Beanie” and Pearl (Thompson) Deckard, and paternal grandparents, Paul and Wilda (Cooper) Clouse, all of Mitchell, Indiana.

He served his country in the U.S. Army and married Judith Kay Fleetwood, June 30, 1962.

Dale was a machinist for Cummins Engine for 30 years, retiring in 1994. He was a member of Medora Pentecostal Church.

Elsie Ella (Northam) Neill, 84, of Bedford passed away on Thursday July 7, 2016, at 9:13 a.m. at the Bliss Place in Bedford.

She was born in Walkerton, on April 24, 1932, to John and Eula (Hancock) Northam. Elsie was a graduate of Walkerton High School and a graduate of the Methodist Hospital Nurses Training in Indianapolis.

She was a Registered Nurse at Dunn Memorial Hospital in Bedford for over 40 years and also worked at Hoosier Uplands Home Health.

Elsie married John W. “Wink” Neill on Dec. 12, 1953, in Indianapolis and he preceded her in death on Feb. 29, 2012.

She attended Englewood Baptist Church in Bedford and was a member of the Concord General Baptist Church in Greene County.

Survivors include a son, John “Michael” Neill and wife Ronda of Bedford; two daughters, Susan Whitman and husband Joe of Nashville, Tenn., and Joyce Cooper and husband Collin of Bedford; eight grandchildren, Randy Whitman, Ryan Neill, Chris Whitman, Sarah Caleb, Casey Fish, Kirsten Fish, Claire Whitman, and Aaron Fish; 14 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Betty Helton of Knox.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and a brother, Robert Northam.

She was born in New Jersey on March 10, 1937, to Charles and Estelle (Tomlin) Maguire. She was a secretary and she married Fleny Lewis in 1978, and he preceded her in death in 2002.

James Franklin McIntyre, 90, of Bedford, passed away on Monday, July 4, 2016, at Stonecroft Health Campus, Bloomington.

Born May 4, 1926 in Leesville, he was the son of Arvil and Opal (Jean) McIntyre. He married Wilma Iven on Dec. 24, 1950; she preceded him in death on July 26, 1982.

James was the co-owner of McIntyre Brothers since 1955 with his brother Dean. He was a graduate of Tunnelton High School. He was stationed at Vance Air Force Base in Oklahoma. He was a member of the American Legion Gillen Post No. 33 and BPOE The Elks No. 265. James attended Mount Carmel Church.

Surviving are three sons, Gary (Regina) McIntyre, Terry (Cathy) McIntyre, and Dale (Pam) McIntyre; one daughter, Linda (Rick) Rogers; six grandchildren, Jamie Myers, Jeff McIntyre, Dr. Brandy Deckard, Jordyn McIntyre, Beth Hudson and Brandon Edwards; seven great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mary Horner, of Indianapolis.

She retired as an administrator for U.S. Fish and Wildlife. She was an active member in the Bloomington First Church of God where she served as a Sunday school teacher, a vacation bible school teacher and youth group leader. She was a Girl Scout troop leader with the Tulip Trace Council.

Survivors include her husband, “Bud” of Bloomington; daughter, Cathy Marciniak and her husband Robert of San Antonio, Texas; daughter, Cassie Potts of Bloomington; two grandchildren, Kimberly Marciniak of Peoria, Ill., and Adam Marciniak of San Antonio, Texas; half sister, Harriet Merry of Ellettsville; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother, John Manzenberger.

Patricia Marie Johnson, 66, passed away Friday, July 1, 2016, at Indiana University Health Bedford Hospital.

Born Dec. 8, 1949, in Mitchell, she was the daughter of William Lee and Ethel Marie (Taylor) Williams. She married Harold Johnson Jan. 13, 1975, and he preceded her in death April 21, 2000.

Patricia was a certified nursing assistant and retired from Core Nursing Home in Bedford.

She was a member of American Legion Post No. 250 Auxiliary.

Survivors include her children, Janice Hattabaugh of Mitchell, Rita Troxell of Tulsa, Okla., Roger Lee Walls Jr. of Mitchell, Richard Walls of Brookville, and Patrick Shawn Walls of Mitchell; 17 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and brothers, Robert Williams of Mitchell, and Wilbur Williams of Mitchell.

Her parents; husband; and siblings, James Williams, Roscoe Williams, William Williams, Harold Lee Williams Sr., and Brenda Kay Lindsey, preceded her in death.

Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 6, at Mitchell Cemetery with Pastor Ronnie Frost Jr. officiating.

Leslie Carl Hobbs, 81, Salem, passed away Tuesday, June 28, 2016, at the James Graham Brown Cancer Center in Louisville, Ky.

Born Feb. 27, 1935, in Kingsport, Tenn., he was the son of Lawrence and Laura (Johnson) Hobbs. He married Janet S. Mattox Sept. 21, 1954, and she preceded him in death July 27, 2010.

He had been employed at Smith Cabinet. He graduated from Mitchell High School in 1954 and was a member of White River Baptist Church.

Leslie was a U. S. Army veteran.

Survivors include his children, Judy Love of Marengo, Carl Hobbs of Salem, Trudy Lytle of Campbellsburg, and Rhonda Mittman of Muscatine, Iowa; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

His parents; wife; and sister, Selma Balton, preceded him in death.

Private graveside service with military honors accorded by American Legion Post No. 250 and Veterans of Foreign Wars No. 9107 was Thursday, June 30, at Mitchell Cemetery.

Virginia (Robinson) Phillips-Baker

Virginia Phillips-Baker, 73, of Springville, died at 5:45 p.m. on Saturday, July 2, 2016, at Westview Nursing & Rehab in Bedford.

Born March 18, 1943, in Columbia, Miss., she was the daughter of Jane Robinson. She married William Phillips, and he preceded her in death. She later married Robert Baker, and he also preceded her in death.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Springville Grace Baptist Church.

She loved to crochet and spend time with her family, especially her grandkids and great-grandkids.

Survivors include her children, Jerome Hettle and wife Debbie of Bedford, Wesley Phillips and wife Tina of Springville, Lisa Hillenburg and husband Robin of Heltonville, Greg Baker and wife Kathy of Springville and Teresa Picou and husband Lee of Springville; her companion pet, Laci Lou; her grandchildren, Carla Hettle and fiancé Matt Roberts, Daniel Phillips, Darren Phillips and wife Danika, Chad Hillenburg and wife Katrina, Dawn Harris, Aaron Baker, Daniel Baker, Robin Parker and husband Dustin, and John Picou; and great-grandchildren, Emmalynn Harris, William Phillips, Hanah Parker, Reid Parker and Meryssa Meadows.

She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, and a grandson, Colin Crose.

Funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 6, in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Brother Alan Phillips, the Rev. Bob Phillips, and a grandson, Chad Hillenburg officiating. Burial will follow in Springville Cemetery West.

Kenneth Robert McMahon

Kenneth Robert McMahon, 85, of Brownstown, passed away on Friday, July 1, 2016, at St. Vincent’s Hospital, Indianapolis, IN.

Mr. McMahon worked as a electrician for “Ford” at Bedford and also retired from that company. He was also a farmer.

He was a member of the American Legion, a 50-year Mason with the Washington Lodge 13, F&AM in Brownstown. A member of the 51st Fight Interceptor Wing Association.

He spent several years on the zoning and planning commission in Jackson County. He liked fishing and high school football and the Jackson County Fair. He was a 1948 graduate of Clearspring High School.

Born Oct. 3, 1930, in Dayton, Ohio, he was a son of the late William Walter and Gladys (Eyler) McMahon. On June 3, 1956, he married Rosetta (Brewer) McMahon, and she survives.

Also surviving are four children, Jeff McMahon, Ed (Darlene) McMahon, April (Jim) Mann and John (Stacey) McMahon; one brother, Donald “Butch” (Carolyn) McMahon; one sister, Lauralee (Charlie) Bingham; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Jerry McMahon and one grandson, Parker McMahon.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at Winklepleck-Weesner in Brownstown. There will be a masonic service that night starting at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Additional viewing will be from 10-11 a.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday morning at the funeral home. Burial with military rites will follow at the Smallwood Cemetery, Brownstown.

Mary Frances (Granato) Robbins

Nov. 9, 1918 — June 30, 2016

Mary Frances Robbins, 97, of Oolitic, died at 9:45 p.m. on Thursday, June 30, 2016, at her residence.

Born Nov. 9, 1918, in Bedford, she was the daughter of Anthony and Mary (Magnus) Granato. She married Wayne H. Robbins on Feb.14, 1942, and he preceded her in death on Dec. 28, 1986.

She was a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church and the Altar Society.

She first worked for the WPA Program. She then worked at Burns City (now Crane) in the late 1930’s as an administrative assistant until she met Wayne. Later she, with her husband, founded Professional Pharmacy and ConvaCare Services working until her retirement in 1999.

She was an avid reader and loved her books. She will be remembered for her Italian cooking.

Survivors include two sons, Michael Robbins and wife Candy, Patrick Robbins and wife Sharon, all of Bedford; five grandchildren, Michelle Sarber and husband Bryan and Joseph Robbins, all of Indianapolis, Kristy Woodward and Holly Woodward and husband Brandon, all of Bedford and Joshua Robbins and wife Carla, of Oolitic; five great-grandsons; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; four siblings, Bobby Granato, Ruby Granato, Angela Dillon and Henry Granato.

Funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 5, at the St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church with Father Rick Eldred and Deacon Dave Reising officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Monday, July 4 at the Day & Carter Mortuary where a Rosary will be prayed at 7:30 p.m.

Neale Robert Davidson

Neale Robert Davidson, 44, of Colorado Springs, Colo., died Saturday, June 25, 2016, in Colorado Springs.

Born Sept. 26, 1971, in Indianapolis, he was the son of Thomas Davidson. Neale was a graduate of Westfield High School in Indiana and attended Purdue University where he met his dedicated wife, Shayna (Bailey). Neale and Shayna’s computer-based work sent them to Indianapolis, Baltimore/Washington, D.C., back to Indianapolis, and finally to Colorado Springs, approximately 16 years ago, where he suddenly passed. Neale was a believer in the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. There is much that can be said about Neale; more than anything, he loved his wife and his three children above all else. He will be missed.

Survivors include his wife, Shayna, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; three daughters, Jennifer, Mina and Rachel Davidson, all of Colorado Springs, Colo.; his father, Thomas Davidson of Lebanon; a sister, Julia Stump of Westfield; an uncle, Andy Davidson of Florida; his mother-in-law, Donna Miller of Paoli, and a sister-in-law, Crystal Chaplin, of Paoli.

Memorial services will be conducted at 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 2, in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Pastor Mitch Whidden officiating. Burial will follow in Meadows Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until the service on Saturday, July 2, at the Day & Carter Mortuary.
