11/30/00 Head – Agatha B. Head of Mitchell, IN, died Thursday, November 30, 2000, at Bloomington Hospital of Orange County. Born on July 3, 1925, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Hascue Lee and Virginia (Chastain) Gollahon. She married William A. Head on November 24, 1949, and he survives. Surviving with her husband are two sons, William H. Head of Beech Grove, IN, and Michael K. Head of Bargersville, IN; one daughter, Jennilu Percic of Aurora, IL; and four grandchildren. She was a registered nurse and a member of the Jacob Finger United Methodist Church and the Indiana State Nursing Association. There will be private services for Agatha Head at Haverly Mortuary with the Rev. Jack Shake officiating. Burial will follow in Mitchell Cemetery. There will be no public visitation. Memorial contributions may be made to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation. Johnson – Estel Marie Johnson of Mitchell, IN, died Thursday, November 30, 2000, at Mitchell Manor Nursing & Rehab Center. Born on December 19, 1911, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Claude and Mae (Hopkins) Elrod. She married Delbert Johnson, and he died in 1970. Surviving are three daughters: Ruth Terry of Mitchell, IN, Georgia Louise Wilson of Bedford, IN, and Agnes Jeanette Terry of Williams, IN; two sons, Dale Eugene Johnson of Amarillo, TX, and John Johnson of Bedford, IN; one step-brother, Floyd Terrell of Mitchell, IN. She was preceded in death by two sons, James Larry Johnson and Donald Wayne Johnson; one daughter, Helen Roberta Foust; two sisters, Mabel Connerly and Mabel Ray; one half-brother, and one step-brother. She was retired from TravLer Corp of Orleans and was a member of the Mitchell Pentecostal Church. Services for Estel Johnson will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday, December 4th, at the Mitchell Pentecostal Church with the Revs. Gerald Spears and Don Terry officiating. More – Lenora (Beth) More of Heltonville, IN, died Thursday, November 30, 2000, at Bloomington Hospital. Born on June 15, 1938, in Ripley County, IN, she was the daughter of Rom and Lorene (Meadows) Ehlers. She married Noe D. More on June 17, 1956 at Middlefork Christian Church in Jefferson County, IN, and he survives. Surviving with her husband are one son, Noel Eric More of Hampton, VA; one daughter, Ramona Dawn Kudla of Metairie, LA; two brothers, Doyle and John Ehlers of Madison, IN; her mother, Lorene Ehlers of Madison, IN; four grandsons, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Lorene Lee More on March 16, 2000. She was a homemaker and a 1956 high school graduate. She was a member of First Christian Church, serving as deacon, elder, Sunday School teacher, and with the Youth Group J.Y.F. Gilead Christian Church or the First Christian Church in Bedford. 11/29/00 Emerson – James William (Bill) Emerson of New Castle, IN, died Wednesday, November 29, 2000, at his residence. Born on September 14, 1915, in Monroe County, IN, he was the son of Orville D. and Mable (McFadden) Emerson. He married Helena Hall on January 28, 1940, in Bedford, IN, and she survives. Surviving with his wife are two son, William Robert Emerson of Virginia Beach, VA, and Ralph Eugene Emerson of Indianapolis, IN; five grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by one brother, Ralph Emerson, and one sister, Judith Emerson Taber. He was a retired Lawrence County Auditor and Military Service Officer, a partner with O.D. Emerson Funeral Home, and an employee of Indiana State Prison of Michigan City, IN. He was a World War II Navy veteran, and a member of Masonic Lodge 14 F&AM of Bedford, Indianapolis Valley of the Shrine and Scottish Rite, First Baptist Church of New Castle, IN, and American Legion #137 of New Castle, IN. Born on May 29, 1943, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Ervin Hicks and Dessie (Wade) Hawkins. Surviving are two sons, Kevin McCluskey of Bedford, IN, and J.R. Lewis of Mitchell, IN; one daughter, Lavonda Tincher of Mitchell, IN; her mother, Dessie Hawkins of Bedford, IN; four sisters: Virginia Wilcox of Bloomington, Carolyn Pruett of Buddha, IN, Evelyn Pruett and Anita Hamilton, both of Bedford, IN; and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father; one son, Billy McCluskey; two sisters, Eva Sowders Stevens and Hazel Young; and her step-father, Gilbert Hawkins. She was a custodian for North Lawrence Community Schools, working at Englewood School. Born on March 15, 1948, he was the son of Clovis "Toney" and Thelma (Hillenburg) Rogers. Surviving are his mother, Thelma Glasgow of Bedford, IN; one brother, Kenneth Rogers of Bedford, IN; five sisters: Connie Mathis, Lana Chenault, and Linda Tumey, all of Bedford, IN, Carolyn Beal of Bloomington, IN, and Eldena Leagle of Tennessee. He was preceded in death by his father and three brothers: Sylvester Thomas, Dennis Edwin, and Gary Scott Rogers, all in infancy. He was a graduate of Bedford High School and Computer College in Louisville, KY, and was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in Vietnam. He was of Protestant faith. Born on June 10, 1936, in Bedford, IN, he was the son of William H. "Pat" and Rena Elizabeth (Flora) Deckard. He married Sue Brown on August 5, 1956, and she survives. Surviving with his wife are three daughters: Andrea Reynolds and Jill Deckard, both of Bedford, IN, and Tricia Barlow of Mitchell, IN; one sister, Mary Ann Young of Heltonville, IN; two grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, six nephews, and five nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents. He was a limestone draftsman-estimator at Heltonville Limestone Supply and was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in Germany. He was a life-long member of the Bedford Boat & Sportsmans Club, Fraternal Order of Eagles, V.F.W. Post of Oolitic, Loyal Order of Moose, and playted the piano with the Les Grissom Band. Wright of Tunnelton, IN, died Monday, November 27, 2000, at Core Nursing Home. Born on November 14, 1913, in Tunnelton, IN, he was the son of Bert and Ella (Hubbard) Wright. He married Katherine McCart on September 4, 1938, and she died on April 21, 1997. Surviving are three sons: William B. Wright of Tunnelton, IN, Richard Max Wright and Michael Edward Wright, both of Bedford, IN; three sisters: Mary Alice McCart, Ina Wright, both of Bedford, IN, and Bonnie B. Kruchten of Broad Run, VA; six grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife; three brothers: Robert, Marvin Rex, and Raymond Wright; and one sister, Alta Mae Hickman. He was a graduate of Tunnelton High School and Indiana State University. His teaching career spanned forty-one years at Heltonville, Ft. Ritner, Tunnelton, and Mitchell. He was a member of Tunnelton United Methodist Church, Lawrence County Retired Teachers Association, and National Education Association. Sanders of Mitchell, IN, died Sunday, November 26, 2000, at her residence. Born on January 20, 1914, in Mitchell, IN, she was the daughter of William and Eunice (Alexander) Squier. She married Clyde Delbert Sanders on September 13, 1947, and he survives. Surviving with her husband are one daughter, Earlene Pickett of Mitchell, IN; two brothers, Velpo Squier of Jeffersonville, IN, and William Athal Squier of Alpena, MI; two grandsons, Clyde and Gerald Pickett; and three great-grandchildren. Born on January 27, 1924, in Vigo County, IN, he was the son of George L. and Millie (Brown) Erdle. He married Estelle Struble, and she died on April 17, 1996. Surviving are two sons, James Robert Erdle, Jr. and Mike Erdle, both of Mitchell, IN; three daughters (no additional information); two brothers, Joseph Erdle of Terre Haute, IN, and Wayne Erdle of Brazil, IN; one step-son, Richard Clark of New York City, NY; one grandson, one step-granddaughter, and one step-great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters. He was a retired supervisor at GM Powertrain and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was of Pentecostal faith. Born on August 1, 1909, in Cub Run, KY, she was the daughter of Lum and Ethel (Jerrals) Day. She married Edward Mason, and she preceded him in death. Surviving are three sons: Robert L. Priddy of Rushville, IN, Charles H. Priddy of Bedford, IN, and Joe Mason of Vallejo, CA; two daughters, Barbara J. Priddy of Waynesville, NC, and Barbara Piper of Bedford, IN; fourteen grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband and one son, James H. Priddy. She was a member of the Free Methodist Church. "Jimbuck" Harrison of Bedford, IN, died Friday, November 24, 2000, at his sister's residence. Born on January 25, 1949, in Bedford, IN, he was the son of Noble and Charlotte (Goens) Harrison. Surviving are four son: Tony Harrison of Heltonville, IN, and Travis, Tracey, and Brandon Harrison, all of Bedford, IN; five sisters: Kay Armstrong, Polly Flynn, Rita Busch, Brenda Watson, and Patty Turner, all of Bedford, IN; and one brother, Mark Peters of Bedford, IN. He was preceded in death by one sister, Shirley Harrison, and one brother, Donnie Harrison. He worked in the construction trades and was a retired concrete finisher. Reynolds – Sheila Elaine Turner Reynolds of Marion County, IN, died Friday, November 24, 2000, at Wishard Hospital in Indianapolis. Born on June 28, 1954, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Derald and Rowena (Bridwell) Turner. Surviving are two brothers, Ted Turner and Ronald Turner, both of Bedford, IN; and one sisters, Susette Stancombe of Bedford, IN. She was preceded in death by her parents. She was a homemaker. Born on August 4, 1909, in Bedford, IN, she was the daughter of Samuel Lucas and May Cross. She married Flavey Collins, and he died November 9, 1965. Surviving are one son, Bob Collins of Manhattan, IL; three grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and one Aunt, Margaret Cross of Bedford, IN. Muriel Brewer of Mitchell, IN, died Wednesday, November 22, 2000, at the home of her daughter. Born on August 11, 1909, in Mitchell, IN, she was the daughter of George and Hettie (Shephard) Clouse. She married Hayden Brewer on February 22, 1928, and he died October 8, 1979. Surviving are one daughter, Helen Marie Rager of Mitchell, IN; four grandchildren: Carol Johnson of Bedford, IN, Jackie Stillman of Mitchell, IN, John Heise of Lincoln, NB, and Roger Rager of Pequot Lakes, MN; seven great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; five sisters: Thelma Rejko, Pansy McDermed, Margaret Bolding, Nona Cooper, Ida Brown; and three brothers: Harley, Richard, and Clyde Clouse. She was a retired employee of Holmes Hardware. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Mission Circle, and Modern Homemakers Club. Bennett of Medora, IN, died Tuesday, November 21, 2000, at Bedford Regional Medical Center. Born on June 12, 1920, in Washington County, IN, he was the son of Herman and Effie (Baker) Bennett. He married Thelma Collier on November 8, 1945, and she survives. Surviving with his wife are one daughter, Carol Thompson of Medora, IN; one son, Roger Bennett of Medora, IN; one sister, Anna Mae Ollis of Richmond, IN; five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Clyde Bennett, and one sister, Mary Gayle Thompson. He was a retired farmer and a member of Mount Carmel Christian Church of Campbellsburg and a 55-year member of Cedar Lodge #161 of Leesville. Phillips – Michael Phillips of Springville, IN, died Tuesday, November 21, 2000, at his residence. Born on April 4, 1968, in Bedford, IN, he was the son of Joseph Ray and Patsy (Ethridge) Phillips. Surviving are one daughter, Eleanor Baude Phillips of Bloomington, IN; his mother, Patsy Phillips of Bloomington, IN; his grandfather, James Ethridge of Bloomington, IN; his step-grandmother, Marie Ethridge of Bloomington, IN; and several aunts and uncles. He was preceded in death by his father; one sister, Kimberly Ann Phillips; and his paternal grandparents, Benjamin and Roxie Phillips. He was disabled. Born on January 5, 1916, in Bono, IN (Lawrence County, IN), she was the daughter of William Henry (George) and Euretta (Stevenson) Hughes. She first married Joseph Bruner in 1936 in Lawrence County, IN, and he died in 1944. She then married Harley Davis in 1946, and he died in 1973. Surviving are one son, James M. Bruner of Brandon, FL; one daughter, Mrs. Shirley Mae Mundy of Bedford, IN; two step-sons, Jimmie Davis and Eugene Davis; one sister, Hazel Crane; five grandchildren, several step-grandchildren, several great grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, Clay Hughes; six sisters: Olevia (Baker) Salzcorn, Martha Ament, Grace Lee, Ruby Hoggatt, Dona Payton, and one sister in infancy; and two step-sons, Johnie Davis and Harley Davis, Jr. She was a homemaker and worked ten years at Fabricast and fifteen years at Dunn Memorial Hospital, form which she retired. She and her husband, Harley, owned and operated restaurants in the Bedford and Seymour area. She was a 1933 graduate of Tunnelton High School and a member of Fayetteville Baptist Church. Born on April 11, 1928, in Bedford, IN, she was the daughter of William Henry and Thelma K. (Sallee) Wagoner. She married Robert Lee Smith, and he survives. Surviving with her husband are one son, John W. Day of Bloomington, IN; two daughters, Pamela Jones and Storme Day, both of Bedford, IN; one step-son, Jeff Smith of Batavia, OH; one step-daughter, Vanessa Hinkle of Columbus, OH; three grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and three step-great-grandchildren. She was a homemaker and a member of Daughters of the American Revolution. She attended First Baptist Church in Bedford. Born on April 14, 1912, in Bedford, IN, she was the daughter of Everett and Elizabeth (Walters) Bunch. She married Roy Cummings, and he died in 1960. Surviving are three sons: Fred Cummings of Rushville, IN, John Cummings of Ellettsville, IN, and Alan Cummings of Bedford, IN; five daughters: Mary Jo Manion of Brownstown, IN, Maxine Owen of Bedford, IN, Norma Stewart of McCordsville, IN, Sara Elizabeth Collins of Roachdale, IN, and Sally Chandler of North Vernon, IN; fifteen grandchildren, twenty-five great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; three sisters, Bernice Harrell, Catherine Bunch, and Almeda Jones; and one brother, L.D. Bunch. She was a homemaker and a member of Englewood Baptist Church. Day & Carter Mortuary is in charge of the arrangements. 11/17/00 Scherschel – Frank E. Scherschel of Bedford, IN, died Friday, November 17, 2000, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on September 9, 1919, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of Rudolph J. and Ida B. (Mize) Scherschel. He married Mary Kathryn Perton on December 27, 1941, and she survives. Surviving with his wife are one son, Michael Scherschel of Bedford, IN; one daughter, Susan Thompson of Bloomfield, IN; one brother, Hugh Scherschel of Palmetto, FL; four grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Earl and Robert Scherschel, and two sisters, Esther & Grace. He was a farmer and was of Protestant faith. He helped organize and served on the board of the Springville Feeder Auction, helped organize and was former president of the Lawrence County Soil Conservation District, was one of the founders of the Lawrence County Fairgrounds serving on their board, and was active in the Lawrence County Co-op, serving on the board of directors. He was a member of the Lawrence County Cattlemen's Association, the Indian Creek Fire Department, Lawrence County Farm Bureau, and Shawswick Township Farm Bureau. Born on August 31, 1935, in Bedford, IN, he was the son of Idris "Buck" and Inez (Cummings) Craig). He married Maralou Hawkins on June 13, 1953, and she survives. He married Linda Sego in January 1984, and she survives. He was preceded in death by his father in January, 1986. In 1984 he retired after twenty four years from the Bedford Fire Department, part of the time serving as Assistant Fire Chief. He was manager of Craig Feed and Seed, where he had currently been working. He was a 1953 graduate of Bedford High School and a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, the National Maine Anjou Cattle Association, Indiana Beef Cattle Association, and was active with Lawrence County 4-H for many years. He married Beatrice Kielbasiewicz on December 14, 1946, and she died on December 24, 1997. He had worked at Louisville-Nashville Railroad, the Missouri-Pacific Railroad, and he retired from Union Pacific Railroad. He retired from Roberts Brass in Mitchell and also had been an employee of Middleton Motors in Orleans. He was a life-long member of Fishing Creek Church and served as Bono Township Trustee for twenty-four years, Precinct Committeeman for twenty-two years, and as member of the Welfare Advisory Council. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Nellie Ann Burcham; and two brothers, Charles William Burcham and James Earl Burcham. He was a postal carrier with the Postal Service, retiring in 1990. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.
