Doyle A. Cobb

June 17, 1924 — Aug. 18, 2011

Doyle A. Cobb, 87, of Bedford, died unexpectedly on Aug. 18 at Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, Fla., with his family by his side.

Born June 17, 1924, in Needmore, the son of the late (John) Edward and Laura Mae (Sasser) Cobb, where he was raised and educated with nine other siblings. He attended Needmore High School and played on the varsity basketball team.

Doyle joined the U.S. Navy on March 23, 1943, after his five brothers had enlisted; he decided he did not want to be left behind. His basic training was at the Great Lakes Naval Station in Illinois. He was stationed in the South West Pacific and served on the U.S.S. Barnes aircraft carrier as a Gunner’s Mate.

He was stationed in Brisbane, Australia where he met the love of his life, Adele Byers. They married on Aug. 25, 1945, in Australia and were together for over 66 years. Adele survives him.

Doyle was the owner of The Toggery in downtown Bedford until 1981. He also owned several businesses in Bedford throughout his career. He was Superintendent of the Bedford Parks Dept. and also worked with the Life of Kentucky Insurance Co. in Louisville.

He loved his family and watching them grow and succeed. He was quiet and shy but a very positive person who always had time to talk and share his experiences and guide you. He was a big advocate of higher education and encouraged all his children to attend college.

Surviving with his wife, Adele, are two sons, Ronald D. Cobb and wife Sue of Vallonia and granddaughter, Sarah, and Michael E. Cobb and wife Helen of Melbourne, Fla., and granddaughters, Rebecca and Emily; three daughters, Ann A. (Cobb) Ford and husband Bob of Melbourne, Fla., and granddaughters, Aimee and Amanda and grandson, Dr. Robert C. Ford III, and five great-grandchildren, Madison, Christian Kai, Shaelen, Skylar and Brooklyn, Robyn L. (Cobb) Garland and husband John of Midland, Mich., grandsons, Dr. Joshua P. Garland, Jeremy Garland, and J.R., and granddaughter, Jordan and great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Jack, Jace, Kali and Konnor; Deborah D. Cobb of Bedford and grandchildren, Melissa D. (Bridwell) Blackwell and Melinda G. Bridwell and great-grandchildren, Braydon, Bria, Brenlee and Addelyn; and two sisters, Phyllis (Cobb) Kirk and Bedford and Helen (Cobb) Thompson of California.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Ernest, Elmer Ray, Emery, Everett and Earl Cobb; and two sisters, Nancy (Cobb) Brinegar and Myrtle (Cobb) Matzweski.

A memorial service and celebration of life will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with the Rev. Dr. Kregg Burris officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery where military rites will be accorded by members of Gillen Post No. 33 American Legion.

Doyle’s family will receive visitors from 4-8 p.m. on Friday at the Day & Carter Mortuary.

Adaiha H. Shaw

Adaiha Hope Shaw, stillborn, passed away at Good Samaritan Hospital on Aug. 24. She was the daughter of Keshia Groves of Vincennes and Neil Shaw of Bedford.

Survivors include her parents; maternal grandparents, Jerry and Carol Groves of Vincennes; maternal great-grandmother, Carolyn Bennett of Vincennes; maternal great-grandparents, Terry and Shirley Groves of Vincennes; paternal grandmother, Tracey Shaw of Bedford; paternal grandfather, Rick Shaw of Washington; and paternal great-grandmothers, Jackie Evans of Vincennes and Mary Shaw of Bedford.

Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Memorial Park Cemetery in Vincennes.

Norma Armstrong

April 16, 1933 — Aug. 25, 2011

Norma L. Armstrong, 78, of San Antonio, Texas, and formerly of Bedford, died at 7:17 a.m. on Friday at Meridian Health Care in San Antonio.

Born April 16, 1933, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Lewis H. and Edna Irene (East) Smith. She married John D. Armstrong and he preceded her in death in 1988.

She was a nurses’ aide and a member of Faith Mission Church in Bedford.

Survivors include a daughter, Teresa L. Armstrong of San Francisco, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and two sisters, Wanda S. Lunan and Barbara Ratkos.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with the Rev. Leonard Sankey officiating. Burial will follow in Knott Cemetery.

Teaha Faye (Henderson) Mittendorf, 29, of Martinsville, died Sunday in Martinsville.

She was born Oct. 28, 1981, in Paoli, the daughter of Robert Jr. “Bobby” and Theresa Henderson. She married Mike Mittendorf.

She was a 2000 graduate of Mitchell High School and attended Hoosier Harvest Church in Martinsville.

Teaha was a very loving person and had many friends. She loved to help other people. She loved her three daughters and being a mom more than anything. She was a great mom. Her girls were the world to her and she was devoted to raise them to serve the Lord. She loved the Lord with all her heart.

Survivors include her husband, Mike of Martinsville; three daughters, Madison, Tory and Olivia Mittendorf of Martinsville; her parents, Robert Jr. and Theresa Henderson; her brother, Robert Henderson III; and grandmother, Mary O. Henderson, all of Mitchell; aunts Vicky Russell and Chris Ferrel and husband Everett, all of Mitchell; uncles, Donald Henderson of Hobart and Junior Hill and wife Sandi of Texas; and cousins, Cindy Stahl of Bedford, Tonja Shipman of Mitchell, Bridget Barberich of Titusville, Fla., Michelle Ferrel Asbury of Mitchell, and Jackson Hill of Texas.

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, Robert Henderson Sr.; great-grandmother, Sylvia Green and her maternal grandfather, Elmer Junior Hill.

Kevin McMullen

Former Indiana resident Kevin Brien McMullen, 46, died Saturday, at a shelter in Florida.

A memorial service will be at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Bedford.

Mr. McMullen was born Dec. 7, 1964, in Chicago, Ill., to Harold and Gertrude McMullen.

Kevin was a loving father, brother and uncle. A thoughtful and generous man, Kevin once offered a rocking chair to his niece who works as a part-time nanny for a small boy and girl.

Kevin always had a fascination with disassembling and reassembling machinery and once worked as a Maintenance Technician and HVAC Specialist in Bloomington.

He is survived by his son, Anthony Lucas; sister, Kathleen Hirons; brothers, Paul and Greg McMullen; along with one niece and three nephews.

Funeral service will be at 8 p.m. today in the Elmwood Chapel of Day & Carter Mortuary for Phil D. Cain, 62, of Bedford, who passed away at 11:10 a.m. on Thursday at home, surrounded by his loving family. Pastors Eric Kennedy and David Ferry will officiate.

Phil was born on May 1, 1949, to Raymond “Pete” and Marguerite (Flinn) Cain. He married Jeri Bourland on Dec. 5, 1975.

Phil was General Manager and Mechanical Operations Supervisor at Broadview Bowl for over 40 years.

Russell Bates

Russell Bates, 80, of 3500 Washington Ave., Bedford, passed away at 2:17 p.m. on Friday at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital.

Born Dec. 7, 1930, in Lawrence County, he was the son of William Bill and Lucille (Osterloh) Bates. He married Martha Jeanette Doane on April 12, 1952, and she survives. He retired from Visteon in 1992 and had also worked for Elliott Stone Co.

He was a veteran of the U. S. Army serving in the Korean War where he received several medals including the bronze star and purple heart.

Survivors include his wife, Jeanette, of Bedford; a daughter, Marsha Ralston and husband Greg of Bedford; two grandsons, Robbie Ralston of Orleans and Ryan Ralston and wife Sarah of Bedford; two great-grandchildren, Taylor and Aden Ralston; two nieces, Stacy Doane-Selmier and Austina Marshall; and five nephews, Reno Bates, Darrell Doane, Scott Doane, J.T. Doane and Norman Taylor; three sisters-in-law, Juanita Taylor and Mona Bates, both of Bedford, and Mary Jane Doane of Mitchell; a brother-in-law, Jonnie Doane and wife, Peggy of Bedford; and his caregivers, Bonnie, Kendra and Janet.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Ronald and Roland Bates.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at the St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church with Father Rick Eldred and the Rev. Norman Taylor officiating. Entombment will follow in Cresthaven Memory Gardens with military rites accorded by members of Gillen Post No. 33 American Legion.

Philip “Phil” Ellingsworth, 52, of 3504 River Bluff Road, passed away at 8:11 p.m. Friday at the Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital.

Born on Aug. 6, 1959, in Bedford, he was the son of Wayne Ellingsworth and Marian (Phillips) Williams. He married Kyle East on June 9, 1979 and she survives.

He was self employed at PCMK Engineering and enjoyed fishing with his boys, playing golf and spending time with his family and friends.

Surviving with his wife, Kyle of Bedford, are two sons, Michael Ellingsworth and wife Ginger of Oolitic, and their children, Kaitlyn and Schyler, and Cody Ellingsworth and wife Jenna of Bedford; his mother, Marian Williams and husband Deonne of Bedford; one sister, Mary Anne Edmonds and husband Dave of Warsaw; nieces and nephews, Aimee Neilson, Jeff Edmonds and wife Camille, Adrea Simmerman and husband Tristan and their children, Jacob and Jacey, Alaina Shirley and Alex Shirley.

He was preceded in death by his father and his best friend Matt.

Gary C. Stillions, 72, passed away at 5:35 p.m. Saturday.

Born on Sept. 27, 1938, in Judah, he was the son of Harley and Nellie Mae (Deckard) Stillions.

He was a Project Coordinator at Cummins Engine Company for 38 years.

Gary was an avid fly fisherman, outdoorsman and a member of the Diesel Workers Union.

Survivors include his children, Gregory E. Stillions and wife Amber of Bedford, Melissa C. Perkins and husband Steve of Westfield, and Melanee Habig and husband Darren of Franklin; and their mother, Linda Stillions of Bedford; six grandchildren, Tommy, Dustin, Austin, Olivia, Dalelen, and baby Stillions; and a sister, Linda Cobb of Bedford.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Ward Stillions.

Shelly Elaine Rife, 51, of 2322 Ramsey Ridge Road, Heltonville, passed away at 10:15 a.m. Saturday at her residence.

Born on Sept. 20, 1959, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of David “Sonny” L. Rife and Wilma (Scott) Rife. She was a member of the Bartlettsville Christian Church.

Surviving are her mother, Wilma, of Heltonville; grandmother, Fredona Scott of Bedford; two nephews, David and Jeff Rife of Heltonville; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her father; brother, David Scott; grandfather, Thomas Scott and her grandparents, Cecil and Della Rife.

Larry L. Kirk

Larry L. Kirk, 70, of Mitchell, passed away at 11:25 p.m. Saturday at Indiana University Health Bedford Hospital.

Born Jan. 2, 1941, in Mitchell, he was the son of Floyd and Ethel (Taylor) Kirk. He married Beverly Jean Burgess Nov. 19, 1960, and she preceded him in death. His second marriage was to Dorothy L. (King) Coulter Feb. 28, 2002.

He was a carpenter and had been employed by Tri-County Builders. He retired from Local Union No. 546.

Larry graduated from Mitchell High School in 1958 and attended the Mitchell Church of the Nazarene.

Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Kirk of Mitchell; sons, Allan (Pam) Kirk of New Whiteland and Bradley Kirk of Mitchell; stepchildren, Shanna Freeman of Mitchell, Butch (Joanne) Coulter of Pensacola, Fla., Steve (Stephanie) Coulter of South Bend and Rusti (Scott) McBride of Mitchell; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; siblings, Dean (Sharon) Kirk of Mitchell, Gene Kirk of Bedford, Colleen Arnold of Mitchell, Denny (Verna) Kirk of Mitchell and Gaye (Gary) Bex of Indianapolis.

His parents; first wife, and sister, Geneva Voorhies, preceded him in death.

Funeral service will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Mitchell Church of the Nazarene with the Rev. Mark Bechtel and Brother Jim Russell officiating.

Harry C. Brown

Harry “Cliff” Brown, 77, of Medora, died at 2:51 a.m. Saturday at St. Vincent Dunn Hospital in Bedford.

He was born July 28, 1934, in Sparksville, the son of Marion and Bessie (Daulton) Brown. He married Donna Underwood on Jan. 23, 1954, in Bedford, and she survives.

He was retired from the Indiana State Highway Department, worked for many years at the Jackson County Highway Department, and had worked at General Motors in Bedford.

He was a precinct committeeman and had served on the Medora Town Board.

He was baptized the Lutheran faith.

He enjoyed IU basketball and NASCAR racing.

Surviving with his wife are one son, Kerry Brown of Medora; two daughters, Kimberly (Roger) Bane of Vallonia and Jana (Terry) Bundy of Salem; seven grandchildren, Michaele (J.D.) Kemp, James (Tracy) Gray, Ryan (Liz) Bundy, Bradley (Sarah) Brown, Ashley (Chris) Cowles, Brent (Kayla) Davis and Derek (Megan) Davis; 10 great-grandchildren, Ryan Kemp, Chase, Kemp, Halle Kemp, Eva Bundy, Marissa Gray, Eston Gray, Jayden Brown, Samantha Brown, Ethan Davis and Brady Davis; two brothers, Norm Brown of Mitchell and Maurice Elliot of Bedford; and one sister, Mary Alice Gardner of Bedford.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Harley R. Brown and Robert “Bob” Brown.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. on Wednesday at the Medora Christian Church with Pastor Chuck Morgan and Pastor Skip Breeden officiating. Burial will follow in White River Valley Cemetery in Medora.

Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. on Tuesday at the Hague Funeral Home in Medora, and from 10 a.m. until the service on Wednesday at the church.

Erlena Cornwell

Dec. 9, 1928 — Aug. 19, 2011

Erlena Williams Cornwell, 82, of Zephyrhills, Fla., formerly of Orleans, died Aug. 19 at the Pasco County Regional Medical Center in Zephryhills.

Erlena was born Dec. 9, 1928, the daughter of Clarence and Lena Williams. She married Roger Cornwell on Aug. 18, 1952, and he preceded her in death on July 10, 1982.

She graduated from Campbellsburg High School with the class of 1947.

She had worked at Trav-Ler Radio in Orleans and at RCA in Bloomington.

She was an avid gardener and loved to quilt and sew.

She was a member of the Community Chapel Church of God in Zephyrhills.

She is survived by her son, Gary Cornwell of Bretzville; and her daughter, Rhonda Byers of Moundville, Ala; five brothers: Morris (Nancy) Williams, Earl (Naomi) Williams, both of Saltillo, Deonne (Marion) Williams of Bedford, and Nelson (Phyllis) Williams and Clyde (Debbie) Williams, both of New Washington; one sister, Marvella (Ray) Waldrip of Zephyrhills; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Saltillo Cemetery in Washington County, with Bro. Bob Holler officiating.

James Hornocker Sr.

March 4, 1923 — Aug. 25, 2011

James Hornocker Sr. 88, of Bedford, passed away at 9:15 p.m. on Thursday at Johnson’s Christian Village in Bedford.

Born March 4, 1923, in Bedford, he was the son of Claude and Stella (Inman) Hornocker. He married Deloris Riechman on Sept. 2, 1950, and she preceded him in death.

He was retired from General Motors and was a veteran of World War II serving with the U.S. Army Infantry in the European Theatre, where he received the Purple Heart. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Bedford, Bedford Masonic Lodge No. 14 F&AM, Scottish Rite and Gillen Post No. 33 American Legion.

Patricia “Patty” S. Owens, 62, of Bedford, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, at 8:38 a.m., Thursday, August 25, 2011, at Garden Villa, in Bedford, after a short illness.

Patty has fought the good fight and has crossed over into the Promised Land of Glory to dance on the street of gold, reside in the Temple of the Lord, to behold His Glory and be in His presence for all of eternity.

Patty resided at Cambridge Square Apartments Bedford until the onset of her illness in March 2011.

Born Jan. 4, 1949, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Clarence R. and Maudie I. (Arthur) Owens. She spent her entire life living in Lawrence County.

Surviving are three brothers, Wayne (Sandi) Owens, and Estell (Cindy) Owens, both of Springville, and Steven (Sue) Owens, DuPont, Indiana. Patty is also survived by one sister, Barbara (Lonnie) Jones of Bedford and a brother-in-law John Jewell, Bedford. Patty has many surviving nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Robert Dale Owens in 2004; a sister, Myrna Jewell in 2009; a niece, Michele Renae (Jones) Ozechowski in 2005; and great-niece, Mackenzie Mae Jolyn Miller in 2002.

Melissa “Missy” Sullivan, 41, of 3346 Leatherwood Road, Bedford, passed away at 2:03 p.m. on Wednesday at Indiana University Health Bedford Hospital.

Born Dec. 11, 1969, in Bloomington, she was the daughter of Lebert and Mary Lou (Foster) May. She married Scott Sullivan on April 8, 1989, and he survives.

She volunteered with the Shawswick Youth League for 15 years.

She was a member of the Women’s Auxiliary of the Bedford Boat and Sportsman’s Club. She enjoyed camping and riding their Harley-Davidson motorcycle.

She loved her children and grandchildren and spending time with her many dear friends.

Survivors include her husband Scott of Bedford; her father, Lebert May of Bedford; children, Adam and Ashlyn Godsey, and Ethan, Ezra and Elijah Sullivan; grandchildren, Cain and Coby Godsey and Maddy May Norman; two sisters, Sherry Brown and husband Mike of Mitchell, and Penny Godsey of Bedford; one brother, Dexter “Butch” May and wife Stacey of Bedford; and several nieces and nephews.

Oliver ‘Pick’ Chastain

Our beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather was called peacefully to his Heavenly home from his residence Wednesday morning.

He was born July 22, 1920, in Cale, to Grover and Ina (Martin) Chastain. He graduated from Trinity Springs High School in 1938.

He joined the U.S. Army in 1942, where he served as Staff Sergeant, Medical Detachment, 240th Field Artillery Battalion at the Battle of the Bulge. He was a rifle expert serving in Northern France, Ardennes Rhineland and Central Europe. He received the Purple Heart, Good Conduct, EAME Theatre Ribbon with four Bronze Stars, American Theatre Ribbon and Victory Medal.

He married Beulah Pipher Mills on Feb. 26, 1949.

He retired from Crane Naval Base in 1973 after 30 years of service. He joined the Bedford Moose Lodge No. 689 in 1966 and served as Governor for 13 years. He received the Pilgrim Award in 1977. He was also an active member of American Legion, VFW and FOP.

He is survived by three children, Oliver Duane (Myra) Chastain of Williams, Barbara (David) Newkirk of Vallonia and Debra (Kym) Davis of Medora; three stepchildren, Gary Dean Mills, Linda Luellen and Jeannette Kessinger; eight grandkids, Cathy McKinney, Davey Jones, Madelyn Geary, Marilyn Wessell, Elizabeth Hamilton, Sherry Traub, Brent Davis and Derek Davis; 14 great-grandkids, Johnny McKinney, Josh McKinney, Jordan Manning, Austin Manning, Ashley Jones, Andrew Wessell, Sabrina Brown, Aidan Wessell, Lexi Morris, Alex Wessell, Gwynie Morris, Ethan Davis, Zander Williams and Brady Davis.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father; three brothers, Leland “Jack” Chastain, Jasper Chastain and John D. “Chub” Chastain; three sisters, Enid Piper, Mildred “Sog” Borton and Roberta “Pit” Baker; son-in-law, Johnny Gregg; daughter-in-law, Kathryn Chastain; nephew, Jerry Piper; and niece, Mary Graves.

He was dearly loved and will be sadly missed and always remembered.

Service will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home with Jeff Hauersperger officiating. Entombment will follow at Cresthaven Memory Gardens with military honors by American Legion Post No. 250. Viewing will be from 3-8 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.

Jack D. Peyton, age 74, of Bedford, passed away on Monday at Garden Villa in Bedford, after a lengthy illness.

He was born on March 22, 1937, in Lawrence County to Spencer and Mary Lois (George) Peyton.

Jack retired from the Bedford Police Department after 20 years of service.

He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Bedford, and the Bedford F.O.P No. 94.

He married Sheila Ann Bechner on Feb. 14, 1982, and she survives.

Survivors include his children, Angela, Marchelle, and Andrew Peyton; stepchildren, Lynisa Blackwell, and Julie Carter; brother, John David Peyton; sister, Loretta McGary; one grandchild, and three stepgrandchildren.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Mary Catherine Scherschel.

She was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, where she was active in the Altar Society as well as organist/choir director for 60 years; she was a member of the American Guild of Organists, Bloomington Chapter; Women’s Department Club and was a Pink Lady at Dunn Memorial Hospital.

Survivors include two nieces, Jeanne Al-Jabi of Ocean Springs, Miss., and Cathy Ann Kanady of Corinth, Miss.; several great- and great-great-nieces and nephews; and several cousins, including Louise Haungs of Bedford, who was her caregiver for many years.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Mary Elizabeth Kanady.

William I. “Bill” Conder Sr., 87, of Bloomington died on Saturday at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital.

He was born at Peerless, in Lawrence County, the son of Edward V. and Nellie G. (Jerrell) Conder.

He retired as Captain of the Indiana University Police Department and previously worked for the Classic Bowling Lanes. He also had owned and operated Conder’s Marathon Station at the corner of Eighth and College in Bloomington.

His survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, William I. “Bill” Conder Jr. and Brenda of Bloomington; one daughter, Shirley Kay Conder of Bloomington; three grandsons, Jack (Lisa) Clark of Heltonville, Jacob (Melissa) Clark of Springville and Andrew (Kelli) Conder of Bloomington; one granddaughter, Ivy Rose Egan of Bloomington; seven great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one sister and brother-in-law, Norma and Wilfred Hacker of Bloomington.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 64 years, Rebecca “Becky” (Lucas) Conder; four sisters, Esther Wise, Estel Deckard, Kathryn Jackson and Nina Hatton; and three brothers, Millard Conder, David Conder and Deward Conder.

Pastor Alex McIntosh, 80, of Bloomington and formerly of Salem and Austin Indiana, arrived in Heaven at 1:02 PM on Saturday, August 20, 2011 with his family & hospice caring for him at his home. Born April 17, 1931, in Chavies, Kentucky to Isaac and Cora (Burton) McIntosh.

Alex graduated from Austin High School in 1950. He was a former employee at the U.S. Shoe Corp in Crothersville and sold Empire life insurance early in his life.

On March 14, 1952 in Austin, Indiana he married Irene M. (Mitchell) McIntosh who survives in Bloomington, IN.

His hobbies included pitching horseshoes, playing basketball where he won several three-point shoot out contests and loved to attend his families sporting events. Alex liked nice cars, nice clothes and enjoyed dressing sharp.

He was a member of Gods Army. On September 3, 1958 Alex was saved at Austin Main street Church of God, from that time on he started serving God with his hymnal and bible at the pulpit where he served as a youth leader and a Sunday school teacher.

Alex ministered at several churches and filled many pulpits during his evangelistic ministry. In 1964 he was called to start the Seymour Church of God from the ground up then he ministered at Shelbyville Church of God. He was called to move back to Austin to start Austin Community Church of God where he served for ten years. He then went to Portage, IN to the Mulberry Church of God ministering a short time there before moving back down south to Pekin Church of God. He was called back to minister at Austin Community Church of God for three years before being called to Salem, Indiana to the Westside Baptist Church of Salem for sixteen years. Alex was a man after Gods own heart, loved people and loved saving the lost. After filling the pulpit full time he started his evangelistic ministry by preaching at several churches including the most recent churches-Seymour Cathedral Of Praise, Linton Church of God, Mitchell Church of God, North Vernon Church of God, Butlerville Mennonite Church where his last sermon was preached just three weeks ago.

Other survivors include, his children, a daughter and her husband, Teresa Sue McIntosh & Mark V. Pitman of Bloomington, IN, a son and his his wife, Douglas E. & Sherry A. McIntosh of Bedford, IN, eight grandchildren, Shadron T. (Marcie) Baker of Brownsburg, IN, Shannon M. Baker of Bloomington, IN, Brian D. (Rebecca) McIntosh of Huron, IN, Brandon L. (Lori) McIntosh of Bedford, Shanice A. McIntosh of Bedford, Cami N. Barnett of Columbus, IN, Keith McLaughlin of Michigan City, IN, Kayla (Corey) Harper of Bedford, thirteen great grandchildren, one brother, Seldon (Jean) McIntosh of Pennsylvania, two sisters, Elva King of Crothersville, Clara Mae (Charles) Cole of Austin, IN.

Born January 24, 1922, in Lawrence Co., she was the daughter of Jacob and Inez (Hillenburg) Honeycutt. She married Richard Wilson on August 7, 1948, and he preceded her in death on January 30, 2008. She was a graduate of the Needmore High School and retired from RCA after forty-one years. She was a member of the Oolitic Pentecostal Church.

Survivors include great-nieces, Ronda Neill and husband, Mike, Trena Nikirk and husband, Randy, all of Bedford, and Christy James and husband, Joe of Solsberry; great-nephews, Michael Evans of Fayetteville, and Mark Stailey and wife, Lisha of Hopkinsville, KY; and several great-great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one sister, Carrie Hale; one brother, Everett Honeycutt; and twins, Edna and Edward (in infancy).

Glen David Ley, MD, 79, of Bloomington, passed peacefully on Saturday, August 20, 2011, at home surrounded by his loving family. He was born July 17, 1932, in Clay City, Indiana, to Anton and Lavada Ley. He was married to Betty Joan Hochstetler. The couple recently celebrated 60 years of marriage.

Beloved son, brother, husband, father, friend and physician, Dr. Ley brought comfort and much joy to all he touched during his lifetime. He enlisted in the Army and served in Germany from 1954 to 1956. He graduated from Indiana State College in 1954, and Indiana University medical school in 1965. Upon graduation, he practiced medicine in Bedford, Indiana from 1965 to 1968. He and his family then moved to Bloomington, Indiana, where he practiced medicine until his retirement in 2004. He was board certified in Internal Medicine.

He will be missed by his wife, Joan; and four daughters, Jan Ley and George Huntington III of Bloomington, Judy and Bill Headley, also from Bloomington, Jill and Jeff Gunderson, of Greenbrae, California, and Jennifer and Stu Skibinski, of Indianapolis. He has seven grandchildren, Rachel Headley, Sarah Arnold, Jon Columbia, Emma and Anna Gunderson, and Gage and Macy Skibinski. He has one great-grandson, Gavin Arnold. He is survived by his brother, Graydon Ley and wife Doris, of Terre Haute, Indiana.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother; brothers, Carl and Phillip; and step-sister, Marie Hart.

Dr. Ley was recently honored by the state of Indiana for his continued practice in medicine for more than 50 years.

Visitation will be at Allen Funeral Home, 4155 S. Old State Road 37, Bloomington, IN, from 3-7 p.m., Tuesday, August 23.

David O. Stogdill, of Ellettsville, passed away at IU Health-Bloomington Hospital, on Thursday, August 18, 2011, at the age of 73.

David was born to the late Otto and Beulah (Wootton) Stogdill in Bedford on February 12, 1938. He served in the U.S. Army. David worked at RCA and Otis Elevator before he retired. David’s passion was coin collecting and he was a great mechanic, being able to work on just about anything. He was a member of Paynetown Church.

David is survived by his wife of 50 1⁄2 years, Shirley (Lawson) Stogdill; sons, Steven Stogdill and David W. Stogdill; grandchildren, Shelbi, Ethan and Dustin Stogdill; brothers, Kenneth, James, Joe and Sam Stogdill; sisters, Thelma Strunk, Betty Reynolds, Mary Long, Lou Ella Stogdill and Sarah Mullis; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was a retired pipefitter with the Pipefitter & Steamfitter’s Local No. 136.

He was a member of the Old Union Christian Church, Gillen Post No. 33 American Legion and Bedford Boat & Sportsman’s Club.

Roy R. Ritchison, 91, Mitchell, passed away at 10:15 p.m. Sunday at Westview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Born Dec. 30, 1919, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Clarence and Bertie (Johnson) Ritchison. He married Norma C. (Bridges) Dec. 23, 1939.

Early in life he worked on the railroad, and retired from General Motors where he was a member of UAW Local 440. Roy was a member of the Huron Church of God and enjoyed farming and mushroom hunting.

A U.S. Navy Seabee veteran of World War II, he was awarded the Philippine Liberation Ribbon and Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign Medal.

Surviving are his wife, Norma Ritchison of Mitchell; children, Stanley Philip (Sandy) Ritchison of Bedford, Darrell Lee “Joe” (Kathy) Ritchison of Bedford and Debra Lynn (Michael) Mullins of Spencer; a sister, Reba Barlow of Bedford; a half brother, John H. Hazel Marie Godsey, 81, of 3100 Shawnee Dr. South, Bedford, passed away at 3:25 p.m. on Wednesday at St. Vincent Dunn Hospital in Bedford.

Born Sept. 18, 1929, in Gray, Ky., she was the daughter of John and Leota (Bryant) Elliott. She married Robert Paul Godsey in 1960 and he preceded her in death in 1999.

She worked at RCA for more than 25 years prior to her disability retirement.

At the age of 70, she returned to school and earned her GED.

She was a member of the Crossroads Church and enjoyed crocheting, reading, fishing and hunting mushrooms.

She loved activities with her family especially the large Thanksgiving gatherings.

Survivors include three daughters, Sherri (Michael) Walls, Paula Lucas and Betty (Mike) Cummings all of Bedford; one son, Rick Godsey of Bedford; grandchildren, Jodie, Billy, Matt, Jesse, Brandon, Crissi, Jason and Brooke; 17 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Edmond (Myrna) Elliott of Norwood, Ohio and Lester Elliott of Gray, Ky.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one sister, Mary Parker; seven brothers, Roy, Jay, James, Elmer, Oscar, Frank and Claude Elliott; and one daughter, from her first marriage, Caroline Ann Farris (in infancy).

James M. “Jim” Wray, 89, of Bedford, died at 2:10 p.m. Wednesday at Garden Villa in Bedford.

Jim was born March 22, 1922, in Bedford, to Millard J. and Mary (Osborne) Wray. He married Wilma Darcus on July 25, 1946, in Washington, Ind., and she preceded him in death on May 3, 2009.

He was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Army Medical Corps. His unit landed at Normandy on June 6, 1944.

He owned Wray’s Texaco stations in Bedford and Oolitic and Wray’s Marathon in Bedford. He drove a school bus for Shawswick High School.

He was a member of Gillen Post No. 33 American Legion, Council No. 1166 Knights of Columbus and Sons of Spanish American War Veterans Camp No. 168. He was past president of the Bedford Jaycees and a lifelong member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church.

He is survived by sons, Ed (Kim) and Bob Wray, both of Bedford, Joe (Marsha) Wray of Bloomington, and John (Gigi) Wray of Oakland, Calif.; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Wilma; brothers, Carl and Bernard Wray; and sisters, Anna Fish and Hazel Bartlett.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church with Father Rick Eldred officiating. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery with military rites accorded by members of American Legion Gillen Post No. 33.

Wanda was born July 9, 1927, in Bedford, to Herschel Earl and Violet Almeda (Hamilton) Nicholson. She graduated from Bedford High School, class of 1944. She was married to Robert Neal DeBolt on May 28, 1950. They were married for 58 years and lived in Anderson and Madison before moving to Daytona Beach, Fla., where they lived for 35 years.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband on March 8, 2008; her parents; her sister, Francis Jeanette Nicholson Thompson; and nephews, Donavon Thompson, Richard Winningham and Joe Renner.

She will be missed by her surviving sister, Betty June Nicholson Brown Bowden, of Bedford; seven nieces, Diana Clark of Collegedale, Tenn., Trenace Orender of Plainfield, Twinkle Cummings of Bedford, Jane Ann Renner-Winningham of Anderson, Toni DeBolt-Hughel and Debra DeBolt-Maddox, both of Noblesville, and Vicki DeBolt-Stallman of Chicago, Ill.

He was a former member of the Indiana National Guard.

He was a 1962 graduate of Orleans High School and a member of Leipsic United Methodist Church. Cletis was a driver for Peak Trucking in Shoals and was also a truck owner.

Eugene Laverne Duncan, 84, of 707 20th Street, Bedford, passed away on Sunday at his residence.

Born Jan. 5, 1927, in Oolitic, he was the son of Edward and Ethel (Wright) Duncan. He married Rozella Richardson in 1949 and she survives.

He was a veteran of World War II serving in Japan and was a member of the Grace Full Gospel Church.

He worked at RCA for 15 years and also worked for Thompson Dairy. He was a self-employed carpenter.

Survivors include his wife, Rozella of Bedford; five sons, Mark Duncan and wife Pam, Larry Duncan and wife Barbara, Dale Duncan and wife Bobbie, Dennis Duncan and Rick Duncan and wife Patsy all of Bedford; grandchildren, Jason Duncan, Angie Tidd, Justin Duncan, Kimberly Duncan, Sarah Terry, Mathew Duncan, John Coe, Lisa Duncan and Scotty Duncan; 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Connie Miller, Claudia (Ernestine) Hudlin, Violet Allen and Charlotte Pierce; one brother, Edward Duncan; and two grandchildren, April and Lori Duncan.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Pastor Brent O’Neal officiating. Burial will follow in the Leatherwood Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded at the graveside by members of the Gillen Post No. 33 American Legion.

Wilma Murray Simpson Case, 97, Mitchell, passed away at 5:37 p.m. Saturday at Mitchell Manor Living and Rehabilitaton Center.

Born Nov. 22, 1913, in Bono Township, she was the daughter of Homer and Rosa N. (Smith) Murray. Her first marriage was to Clifford Simpson and she then married Clifford N. Case July 20, 1946, and he preceded her in death March 20, 1965.

She had been employed as a floor lady at Reliance Manufacturing 20 years and retired as a medical assistant from Edgewood Clinic with 27 years of service.

Wilma had been a member 68 years of the First Christian Church. She also belonged to the Dorcas Circle, Spring Mill Homemakers Club, Order of Eastern Star No. 503, Phi Beta Psi Associate Chapter, Senior Citizens, Dixie Club, Bedford Medical Center Auxiliary, Royal Neighbors, and Fleur-de-Lis.

She graduated from Mitchell High School in 1932.

Surviving are children, Donald Lee Simpson of Columbus and Kathy Rose (Joe) Adams of Avoca; grandchildren, David Simpson of Chicago, Paul (Renee) Simpson of Camp Douglas, Wis., Amber R. (Justin) King of Bedford and Jennifer (Jason) Wray of Bedford; great-grandchildren, Sarah Linville, Sean Simpson, Rhiannon Simpson, Gregorio Simpson, Annalise Simpson, Caterina Simpson, Javyn Wray, Jaret Wray and Zachary King; and former daughter-in-law, Sonja Simpson of Indianapolis.

Her parents; husband; daughter-in-law, Margaret E. (Wigley) Simpson; granddaughter, Elaine Garrett; great-grandson, Sascha Simpson; and brother, Roscoe Murray, preceded her in death.

Cletis Ray Evans, 68, of Orleans, passed away at 10 a.m. Saturday at Indiana University Health Bloomington.

Born April 10, 1943, in Washington County, he was the son of Roy Moss and Martha Ellen (Temple) Evans. He married Rebecca Mae Parish Sep. 2, 1972.

He was a former member of the Indiana National Guard.

He was a 1962 graduate of Orleans High School and a member of Leipsic United Methodist Church. Cletis was a driver for Peak Trucking in Shoals and was also a truck owner.

Surviving are his wife, Rebecca Evans of Orleans; children, Christopher Roy (Irma) Evans of Louisville, Stacy Irene (Cody) Dobner of Orleans, Lori Ellen (Jake) Williams of Orleans, and Michael Elwood (Joanie) Evans of Orleans; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; siblings, Ethel Grace Evans of Bedford, Gladys (John) Ponzini of Bedford, Carol (Tom) Irwin of Muncie, and Larry (Linda) Evans of Paoli; and sisters-in-law, Rosie Evans of Mitchell and Shirley Evans Kilhorn of Orleans.

His parents; brothers, Dan Evans and Haskell Evans; and sister, Edna Bagley, preceded him in death.

Jackie Lee Glassco, 65, Bedford, died at 1:04 p.m. on Saturday at Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

He was born May 26, 1946, in Silverville, the son of Ralph and Betty (Super) Glassco.

He retired from W.F. Meyers after 40 years of employment.

He enjoyed riding his Harley, woodworking, classic cars and being outdoors.

He was a graduate of Fayetteville High School with the class of 1964.

Survivors include his daughter, Michele (Terry) Kirkman of Springville; his mother, Betty Glassco of Bedford; his companion, Cindy Epson of Bedford; one brother, Jerry (Roxanne) Glassco of Bedford; one sister, Jeanie Glassco of Bedford; and one nephew, T.J. Glassco of Bedford.

He was preceded in death by his father; and two sisters, Brenda Glassco and Janice May.

Martha L. Smith, 89, of Columbus, died Friday at her residence.

Born July 26, 1922, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Claude C. and Velma V. (Stafford) Wiley. She married Elmer Eugene Smith, Dec. 11, 1938, and he preceded her in death on March 17, 2009.

Martha was a member of Garden City Church of Christ where she belonged to the Golden Harvesters as well as volunteered for many other projects. Martha loved to read, playing cards with friends, as well as all sports. She enjoyed travelling, cooking, entertaining, and quilting. Her greatest joy was her family.

Surviving are her daughters, Sondra (Edwin) Umphress of Columbus, Susan (Dean) Emerson of Columbus, and Shelley (Matt) Dawicke of Columbus; grandchildren, Lisa (Mike) Lovins, Tammy (Steve) Fannin, Tony (Tammy) Murphy, Teri Jackson, Wiley (Lisa) Umphress and Maria (Joel) Doyle; 17 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and sister, Claudette (Jim) Jackson of Heltonville.

Martha was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and a sister Ruth Miller.

Robert Roland Ramey, 94, Martinsville, passed away at 8:43 p.m. on Thursday at The Waters of Martinsville.

He was born on March 29, 1917, in Mitchell, to the late Hisel and Bessie (Mann) Ramey. On March 4, 1940, he married Evelyn (Moon) Ramey and she passed away on June 4, 1984.

Robert was a 1936 graduate of Mitchell High School. He played varsity basketball for four years and was highly recruited by area colleges after graduation.

He retired in 1977 from Stewart Warner in Indianapolis where he had been an inspector. After retirement he was manager of the Self Service Laundry in Martinsville and he was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge No. 720 F&AM.

Survivors are his daughter, Diane Selch of Martinsville; sons, Phillip Ramey and Myron Ramey both of Martinsville; brother, Roy Ramey of Mitchell; grandchildren, Jason Selch, Ryan Selch and Rachel Boyd; great-grandchildren, Preslee Boyd and Mia Boyd.

He was also preceded in death by sister, Ethel Bundy; and brothers, Emmett, Glenmore, Woodrow, Walter, Delbert and Clayton Ramey.

Helen Bennett, 82, of West Baden Springs, died Wednesday, August 10, 2011, at the Paoli Health and Living in Paoli, Indiana.

Helen was born May 3, 1929 in West Baden Springs, Indiana. She was the daughter of Stanley and Mabel G. Tolbert Bennett.

She graduated from the West Baden Springs High School and worked at the former Travler Corporation in Orleans and was a member of the Bonds Chapel United Methodist Church, West Baden.

Helen is survived by two brothers, Wilbur (Deeann) Bennett and Morris Bennett of West Baden. There are three sisters, Frances Ramey of Indianapolis, Vera (Hyscel) Ward of Bloomington and Lois (Billy) Padgett of Paoli, Indiana and a brother- in- law, Kenneth Merry of Mitchell, Indiana.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Thelma Merry, a nephew, Doug Bennett, brother-in-law, James Ramey and a sister-in-law, Monica Bennett.

The funeral will be Sunday, August 14, 2 p.m. at the Bonds Chapel United Methodist Church with Rev. Rob Martindale officiating. Burial will follow in the Bonds Chapel Cemetery.

Harley E. “Kike” Brown, 61, Mitchell, died at 11:25 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 11, at his residence.

He was born Nov. 4, 1949, in Bedford to the late Harley R. Brown and June McPherson Brown. He was married to Dellana Dotts Brown, and she survives.

Other survivors include two stepsons, Travis E. Armstrong of Orleans and Jason L. Armstrong of Orleans; two brothers, Jack L. Brown of Bedford and Stephen J. Brown of Bedford; sister Lynn Baughman of Medora; five step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Brown loved stock car racing and motorcycle riding. He also loved playing his bass guitar. He was a member of the Heltonville Methodist Church. He worked several years at Netshape in Campbellsburg as a machine operator. He graduated from Tunnelton High School in 1969.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 16, at Hague Funeral Home, Medora, with Pastor Jim Temple and Pastor Robert Stabler officiating. Burial will be in Dixon Chapel Cemetery in Lawrence County.

Patricia I. Cole

Patricia Irene “Pat” Cole, age 66, of Bedford, passed away at 9:40 p.m. Wednesday at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital surrounded by family after her brief bout with cancer.

Pat was born in Bedford and was a former employee of RCA in Bloomington, Bedford Medical Center, Visteon and Walmart. She was a member of UAW Local No. 907 and the VFW.

Pat was known for her love and admiration for all things Elvis Presley.

She was one of 12 children, fathered by Glen and Mary Cooper and mothered by Schyler and Edith Fender.

Pat will be forever remembered by her loving siblings, Bill Cooper of Portage, Brenda Martinez of Portage, Charles Cooper of Portage, Dale Cooper of Louisiana, Dean Cooper of Hammond and Wanda Mosier of Bloomington; and sister-in-law, Nancy Fender of Greene County. She will also continue to be honored by her devoted children, Vicki Woods of Mooresville, Teresa Roll of Fayetteville, Gordon Cole of Colorado, Karen Cole-Chastain of Bedford, Kenneth Cole of Bedford, and Brian Conley of Arizona; her 17 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and many loving nieces and nephews.

She was affectionately known as “Momma” and “Mammaw” to many and was surrounded and loved by family and friends.

Pat is now reunited with her husband, Gordon E. Cole, who preceded her in death; along with her siblings, Marvin, Robert, Wilma, Kenneth, Donald and Austin Dale; niece, Cathy Spinks; nephew, Steve Mosier; and grandson, Kyle.

Pat touched the lives of many people with her continuous love of her family and friends, her unending charisma and complete honesty.

Wayne E. Blackwell

Wayne E. Blackwell, age 78, of Bedford, passed away Tuesday afternoon at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital with his family at his side.

He was born Oct. 1, 1932 in Lawrence County to Noah Everett and Dertha Todd Blackwell.

Wayne spent his professional career in construction and excavating. He worked with Ramshead Corporation, Don Mitchell Builders and ultimately owned his own construction company Wayne Blackwell Builders. After retirement he worked with his son’s company Brad Blackwell Excavating.

Wayne was a member of Sherwood Oaks Christian Church and an Air Force Veteran of four years active duty serving during the Korean War. After Korea he served another eight years in the reserves.

Wayne leaves behind his wife of 59 years Roberta (Umphress) “Bert” Blackwell of Bedford; son, Larry Blackwell and wife Marilyn of Las Vegas, son, Kenny Blackwell of Bloomington, daughter, Sheila Hillenburg and husband Mark of Bedford; son, Tracy Blackwell and wife Kelly of Bedford, son, Brad Blackwell of Bedford and son, Dave Blackwell and wife Nichole of Bloomington. Wayne was grandfather to 20 grandchildren, Troy Blackwell, Stacie Renard, Wyatt Blackwell, Emily Trueblood, Jamie Morris, Laura Patterson, Jennifer Blackwell, David Blackwell, Stephanie Womack, Chris Johnson, Tara Dodds, Mark Hillenburg II, Cory Blackwell, Kyle Blackwell, Canon Blackwell, Ashleigh Blackwell, Brylee Blackwell, Marina Blackwell, Addisyn Blackwell, and Maddix Blackwell. He also leaves behind 11 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild; two sisters, Cleta Murphy and Betty Todd; a brother, Darrell Blackwell and wife Gleathel; and two brothers-in-law, Jim Umphress and Bud Umphress and wife Ann.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings Marie Fish, Lena Murphy, Reatha Seiverling, Marian Blackwell, Wilma Allen, Ray Blackwell, and twins David and William Blackwell.

David L. Hill, 74, of Bedford, went home to be with the Lord at 5:15 a.m. on Tuesday at Indiana University Health Bedford Hospital.

Born Nov. 21, 1936, in Lawrence County, he was the son of William “Shine” Hill and Hazel (Trueblood) Hill. He married Phyllis Wagoner on Sept. 15, 1979, and she survives.

He worked at Cummins Engine for 39 years and was a member of the Bedford Baptist Temple.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis, of Bedford; four daughters, Leann Chastain and husband Tim of Cambellsburg, Patricia Galloway of French Lick, Lisa Wright of Worthington, and Teresa Applegate and husband Dan of Bedford; three sons, Rob Bridwell of Norman, Van Bridwell and wife Tonya of Springville, and Tim Bridwell and wife Helen of Heltonville; 16 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Glen Hill of Terre Haute.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Art and Bob Hill; and a granddaughter, Stephanie Chastain.

Vera C. Poole, 85, of Oolitic, died Monday at St. Vincent Dunn Hospital.

Born Dec. 25, 1925, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Henry D. and Cora Lee (Wardrip) Benham. She married John F. Poole on May 24, 1952, and he preceded her in death on Aug. 5, 1982.

She retired as a seamstress from M. Fine & Sons in 1996 after 20 years and was a member of the Oolitic United Methodist Church and White River Humane Society.

She enjoyed writing poetry and had her work published in numerous publications. She was a member of the United Foundation of Doll Clubs and founder of the Enchanted Doll Museum.

Survivors include two sons, John R. Hague of Melrose, Fla., and Eric J. “Tyke” Hague of Lake Geneva, Fla.; adopted son, Jon Phillip Poole of Indianapolis; stepdaughter, Linda Sue “Susie” Poole of Bedford; three stepsons, John A. Poole of Florida, Freeland D. “Butch” Poole of Bedford and Rickey D. Poole of St. Louis, Mo.; a sister, June Benham Fiddler McGuinnis of Decatur, Ill.; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; six brothers, Carl H., Lawrence E., William C., James, Harold L. and Russell Benham; and two sisters, Cora I. Benham and Ruth Benham (her twin).

Ann M. Dossen Lancaster, age 88, a Fort Wayne resident for 60 years, died Saturday in Cassopolis, Mich.

She was born Nov. 16, 1922, in Oolitic and graduated from Bedford High School in 1941. She married Charles Lancaster of Bedford in 1944. He died in 2000.

Mrs. Lancaster was a sales associate at Hutner’s Paris on Rudisill Boulevard in Fort Wayne for 25 years. She retired to Hilton Head, S.C., in 1994. In 2001, she moved to Elkhart to be near family.

She is survived by her daughter, Suzette Reeves (husband Rick) of West Lafayette; and her son, Marc D. Lancaster of Union, Mich. Also surviving are three grandchildren and three great-granddaughters.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Charyl Snyder and grandson Wade Snyder and two brothers and four sisters.

Private burial will be in Covington Memorial Gardens, Fort Wayne.

Born May 22, 1935, in Lewisburg, Ky., she was the daughter of Edgar and Margie (Terrell) Bishop.

She was a retired caregiver and a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church.

Surviving: daughters, Mary Ann Leatherman, Salem, Belinda Sue (Bobby D.) Parks, Orleans, Bobbi Jean (Trent) Hardwick, Bedford: nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; brothers, Earl Thomas Bishop, Louisville, Donald Dawson Bishop, Orleans, John Wallace Bishop, Mitchell; sisters Margie Lucille Cheatham, Paoli, and Doris Jean Bowling, Brownstown.

Her parents; brothers, Freddy Dwayne Bishop and James Elmer Bishop; sister, Mina Joyce McCoskey; and great-grandson, preceded her in death.

Celebration of Life service will be at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home with Pastor Danny Goens officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Mt. Pleasant Baptist Cemetery.

Kimberly Herod, age 44 of Huron, passed away on Saturday at 7:57 p.m. at her residence. She was born on Nov. 30, 1966, in Bedford to David and Wilma (Martin) Jackson. She was a BNL High School graduate in 1984; also, she graduated from IVY Tech Community College in Bloomington. She had worked at Dana Corp. in Mitchell, and Snow’s Drive-In in Bedford.

She is survived by her two sons, Jason Herod of Bedford, and Brian Herod of Muncie, Indiana; one daughter Ashley Holt at home, in Huron; her companion Chris Holt of Huron; her parents, David and Wilma Jackson of Bedford; two brothers, Chester Nelson and wife Karen of Bedford, and Richard Carmichael and wife Lena of Bedford.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, George and Jewell Martin.

Graveside services will be on Thursday at 11 a.m. at Cresthaven Memory Gardens.

William J. Parkes

William J. Parkes, 95, of Bloomfield, passed away Saturday at Lyons Health and Living Community. He was born March 5, 1916 in Milford, Ill., the son of Bert and Ruth (Collins) Parkes.

He was a member of the Furnace Christian Church and a life time member of Solsberry Lodge No. 411, F.& A.M. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Philippine Islands. He was employed as a pipe fitter at NWSC Crane and retired in 1976. Bill was a great gardener and well known for his outstanding produce. He loved his family and was always joking with the grandchildren.

Survivors include a daughter, Susan Roberts of Bloomington; step-children, Owen Burch (Shirley) of Stanford, Fla., Marjorie Anderson (Garner) of Bloomfield and David Burch (Mary) of Bloomfield; grandchildren, Daniel and Jeremy Roberts; step-grandchildren, Bert Burch, Deborah Tritbhard and Karen Watts, Lori and Tony Anderson, Amy Lawhead, David Matthew Burch and Ashley Burch-Ryan; also a host of step great-grandchildren; two brothers, Joe Parkes of Oolitic and Donald Parkes of Front Royal, Va.; two sisters, Mary Lester of Indianapolis and Nellie Ann Wilcoxin of Bloomfield.

William was preceded in death by his first wife, Nellie Rae (Floyd) Parkes in June 1963, also his wife of 39 years, Dorothy Holtsclaw (Burch) Parkes who passed away on May 11, 2007; brothers, Robert Parkes, Stanley Parkes, John Parkes, James Parkes, and his parents.

Services will be conducted 1 p.m. Wednesday at Jenkins & Sons Funeral Home in Bloomfield, with Rev. George Sites and Rev. Keith Long officiating. Interment will follow in Walnut Grove Cemetery.

She was a member of the Mitchell Church of the Nazarene and was employed several years at Cargas Candy Kitchen.

Born Sept. 8, 1951, in Bedford, she was the daughter of Marvin E. Griffin and Betty Rose Allen Griffin. She married Donald Earl Johnson, Jr. on May 23, 1971, and he survives. She was a graduate of Bedford High School with the class of 1968 and attended Vincennes University. She was employed as a nurse at Stonebridge Health Campus.

Survivors include her father, Marvin E. Griffin and step-mother, Sue of Bedford; her husband, Don of Bedford; two daughters, Colleen F. Anthony Jay Tabor was born in Bedford, Indiana on Oct. 24, 1956, to William and Janice (Brown) Tabor. He passed from this life Sunday, July 31, 2011 in San Antonio, Texas at age 54.

Along with his father, Jay ran the family business, Cleaning Professionals, Inc., in San Antonio, for the past 20 years.

Jay leaves behind to cherish his memories, sons Jeff, Adam and Chris Tabor; father William Tabor and his wife Betty; sister Debbie Frick and husband Michael; brother Bill Tabor and wife Jill; step-sister Teresa Cairo; nieces Janice Miles, Julia Curtis and Kailee Cairo, and nephews Josh and Matt Frick and Jeremy Tabor.

Born Aug. 12, 1932, in Harrison County, she was the daughter of Herbert W. and Lydia Glenn (Tyler) Hottle. She married Robert Leon Williams on Sept. 22, 1950.

She was a newspaper reporter and photographer and had been employed at the Times-Mail 27 years. Wanda graduated from Salem High School in 1950 and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Mitchell.

Survivors include her husband, Leon Williams, Mitchell; one sister, Rhodella Martin of Salem, and one brother, Dale Kelly Hottle of Salem.

Her parents and brother, Bruce Hottle, preceded her in death.

Casey T. Pemberton, age 31 of Bedford, passed away on Monday, Aug. 1, 2011, in Indianapolis, as a result of an auto accident on Aug. 1 in Bedford.

He was born on June 28, 1980, in Bedford to Tony and Katherine (Lowery) Pemberton. He attended BNL High School and was employed at Walmart in Bedford.

Casey is survived by his son, Camryn Sanders of Huron, father and stepmother, Tony and Melissa Pemberton of Mitchell; two brothers, Sky Pemberton of Bedford and Adam Pemberton and his wife Alma of Orleans; a stepbrother, Joshua Edmonson and wife Jennifer of Mitchell; a stepsister, Tristda Cook and husband Caleb of Campbellsburg; grandmother, Margaret Lowery of Bedford; Uncles Tip Lowery of Oolitic and Jason Lowery of Florida; aunts Bobbie Pemberton of Muncie and Frankie Carson of Muncie, and several nieces and nephews. Casey loved all children.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Katherine Pemberton on June 4, 2011; his grandfather, Morrell Lowery; grandparents, Robert and Bertha Pemberton; aunt Bow Pemberton and uncle Terry Pemberton.

Anna (Fickle) Gingher

Anna (Fickle) Gingher, 89, of Crothersville, passed away at 1:55 p.m. on Sunday, July 31, at her home with her family by her side.

Born May 22, 1922 in Clinton County, Indiana, she was the daughter of Floyd S. and Catherine (Conlon) Fickle.

Ann graduated from Purdue University in 1944 with a teaching degree in Home Economics and Physical Education. While at Purdue, she was a member of the competitive Rifle Team.

On Aug. 20, 1949, in Mulberry, Indiana, she married Robert H. Gingher, who passed away on Sept. 15, 2010.

Ann enjoyed teaching and working with children; in doing so, she taught at the following schools, Howe School in Howe, IN, Rolling Prairie School in Rolling Prairie, IN, Metz School in Steuben County, IN, Williams High School in Williams, IN, Edinburgh Schools in Edinburgh, IN, Macy Schools in Macy, IN and then Crothersville Community School. Ann moved to Crothersville with her family in 1969. Retiring from Crothersville Schools working as an elementary science teacher, teaching 5th and 6th grades, also was the physical education teacher for K-6th grades.

Ann was a member of the Brownstown Presbyterian Church, Indiana Extension Homemakers and locally, Happy Appronettes Home Ec Club, Tri Kappa, Federated Women’s Club in Lafayette, IN, retired teachers organization, Home Hospital Women’s Auxiliary, Study Group in Dugger, IN, also a proud member of the Girls Inc Women’s Council. She was active in 4-H club when she was younger and was a 4-H leader, and Girl Scout leader. Ann loved and enjoyed sewing.

Survivors include her daughter, Kimberly Gingher of Knox, IN, a sister, Martha Pollak of Bloomington, IN, a brother, Lee E. Fickle of Bainbridge Island, Washington.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Frances Fickle Gangwer, brothers, Floyd Earl Fickle, (8 year old, Lyle Fickle), (8 month old brother, Carl Elba Fickle.)

Pastor Brad Napier will conduct funeral services at 10 a.m. on Thursday at Adams Funeral Home.

Nanette Maria Puckett passed away on Thursday, July 28 at Bowling Green Medical Center in Kentucky. She was 65 years old.

She was born March 9, 1946, in Detroit, Mich.

She is a former resident of Bedford, and was a member of Dive Christian Church. She moved away 20 years ago and was a member of Central Christian Church there.

She was married 34 years. Her husband Donald Puckett still lives in central Kentucky.

Survivors also include two daughters, Tina (Hillenburg) Nichols of Linton, IN, and Athena (Hillenburg) Caudill of Guthrie, IN; two step-children, Donna Case of Bedford, IN and Tracey Ratliff of Stinesville, IN; 9 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren.

Maysel Ellen Ray, 89, Medora, passed away Monday, Aug. 1, at 12:25 a.m. at Indiana University Health Bedford Hospital.

She was born Aug. 10, 1921, in Washington County.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence Temple and Stella (Rice) Temple. She was married to Forest Andrew Ray, who preceded her in death in 2000.

Survivors include five sons, Wayne Ray of Medora, Gene (Marilyn) Ray of Mitchell, Harold (Sharon) Ray of Heltonville, Randy (Karen) Ray of Loogootee, and Denny (Teresa) Ray of Sparksville; six daughters, Sue (Dick) Hackney of Bedford, Arelene (Max) Hinderlinder of Medora, Mary (Jim) Cowles of Campbellsburg, Sandy Hattabaugh of Brownstown, Annette (Dean) Bowers of Vallonia, and Dana Shosten of Salem. She is also survived by five generations of grandchildren; three half-sisters, Louisa Johnson of Medora, Violet Osborn of Seymour and Irene Silence of Brownstown.

She was also preceded in death by three sons, Roger, Melvin and Steven Ray; one brother, Albert Temple; one sister, Ruth Sutton, and one grandson, Brian Ray.

She was a member of Faith Southern Baptist Church in Washington County. She was a homemaker. She loved quilting and loved her church.

Born Dec. 6, 1953 in Bedford, he was the son of Ezra Brown and Mary (Lively) Brown. He married Knoxie Grace Terrell on April 7, 1973 and she preceded him in death on April 18, 1999. He was employed at Reeds Quarry in Bloomington.

Survivors include one son, David D. Brown of East Oolitic; one daughter, Tina M. James R. “Dick” Kelley, 77, of Heltonville, IN, passed away at his residence on July 30, 2011. He was born in Monroe County on July 14, 1934 to Uyless and Altha (Southern) Kelley. Dick worked as a mechanic for Moon Freight Line and was a mail carrier for Sam Rees Trucking.

Dick was a member of the Medora Apostolic church in Medora, IN.

Dick is survived by his wife Wilma Jean (Axsom) of Heltonville, IN; daughters, Debra Breedlove of Smithville, IN, Diana Lynn Neal of Stinesville, IN, Pamela Troyee Parker of Bloomington, IN; sons, Timothy James Kelley of Springville, IN, Tony Richard Kelley of Unionville, IN, Tracy Don Kelley of Bloomfield; sisters, Marilyn Kay Turner of Heltonville, IN, Lena Catherine Stansbury of Texas, Lois Mae McIntyre of Kansas and brother Deward Kieth Kelley of Missouri. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, and brother Clancy Edward Kelley.

Richard “Bones” Dean Greer of Bloomington, IN passed away peacefully on July 29, 2011. He was 56 years old. He was born Nov. 17, 1954 in Bedford, IN to Roy Dean and Sharon R. (Anderson) Greer. Richard graduated from Bloomington High School in 1972 before working for Micro Motors for 15 years. He also worked for Royal Toyota for many years as the service advisor manager. Richard enjoyed his flower garden, listening to music, spending time on the lake and with his grandchildren and family.

Richard was a baseball player in high school and then went on to play softball for Clear Creek Church League 1973-1974, Ellis Floral Team 1975, Front Runner Sports 1976-1980, and Monroe Guaranty Insurance 1980-1985. He also played in a National Softball Tournament in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

He is survived by a host of family and friends who will miss him dearly including his wife Rowena Kay (Buster) Greer; daughters Marcy Kalat and husband Pete of San Francisco, CA, Paula Zurbuch and husband Andrew of Bloomington, IN, and Courtney Wise and husband Kurt of Memphis, TN; brother Mike Greer and wife Ardela of Oolitic, IN; sister Lisa Knies and Gregg of Sellersburg, IN; grandchildren Marley Kalat of San Francisco, CA, Blaine, Bryce and Drew Zurbuch of Bloomington, IN, and Drew Wise of Memphis, TN, and close friends Ron and Darlene Haste.

He was preceded in death by his parents and Sister Deanna Greer.

Friends and family will be celebrating the life of Richard “Bones” Greer with services, 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6, 2011 at the Allen Funeral Home 4155 S. Old State Highway 37 Bloomington, IN. Visitation will be Friday, Aug. 5, 2011 from 2-8 at the funeral home. Burial will be at the Clover Hill Cemetery in Harrodsburg, IN.

Frederic Wayne Byers

June 7, 1923 — July 29, 2011

Frederic Wayne Byers, 88, of Springville, IN went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at 12:58 p.m. Friday, July 29, 2011. Visitation for Frederic will be held at Day & Carter Mortuary, Monday Aug.1, 2011 from 4:00 – 8:00 and the funeral service on Tuesday Aug. 2nd at 10:30 with burial in the Louder Cemetery.

Born June 7, 1923 in Springville, the son of Cyrus and Minnie (Hubbard) Byers, Mr. Byers was a member of the last graduating high school class at Springville in 1942. Married Betty (Cathers) June 20, 1943.

Mr. Byers entered service during World War II, serving in the European Theater in Holland, Belgium, France and Germany. Mr. Byers participated in major offensives including holding the bridge at Remagen and in the Ardennes during the Battle-Of-The-Buldge.

Returning from the war, Mr. Byers worked as a carpenter and finished his career as owner and operator of Byers Excavating until his retirement. Mr. Byers was a member of the Elks and a life time member of the American Legion.

Mr. Byers enjoyed fishing, woodworking, serving others and supporting the community.

Survivors include his wife of 68 years Betty (Cathers), one daughter Rebecca Byers of Springville, a son Robin Byers (Donna Byers) of Carmel, and a granddaughter Kathryn Olivia Byers of Bloomington.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father Minnie and Cyrus Byers, six brothers Glen, Burl, Edwin, Dwight, Vance and Gene. Three sisters, Dorothy Homes, Bernadine Andis, Geneva Byers, and a granddaughter Tessa Elyse Byers.
