Frederic Wayne Byers

June 7, 1923 — July 29, 2011

Frederic Wayne Byers, 88, of Springville, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at 12:58 p.m. Friday, July 29, 2011. Visitation for Frederic will be held at Day & Carter Mortuary, Monday, August 1, 2011, from 4–8 p.m. and the funeral service on Tuesday, August 2, at 10:30 a.m. with burial in the Louder Cemetery.

Born June 7, 1923, in Springville, the son of Cyrus and Minnie (Hubbard) Byers, Mr. Byers was a member of the last graduating high school class at Springville in 1942. Married Betty (Cathers) June 20, 1943.

Mr. Byers entered service during World War II, serving in the European Theater in Holland, Belgium, France and Germany. Mr. Byers participated in major offensives including holding the bridge at Remagen and in the Ardennes during the Battle-Of-The-Bulge.

Returning from the war, Mr. Byers worked as a carpenter and finished his career as owner and operator of Byers Excavating until his retirement. Mr. Byers was a member of the Elks and a lifetime member of the American Legion.

Mr. Byers enjoyed fishing, woodworking, serving others and supporting the community.

Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Betty (Cathers); one daughter, Rebecca Byers, of Springville; a son, Robin Byers (Donna Byers), of Carmel; and a granddaughter, Kathryn Olivia Byers, of Bloomington.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Minnie and Cyrus Byers; six brothers, Glen, Burl, Edwin, Dwight, Vance and Gene; three sisters, Dorothy Homes, Bernadine Andis and Geneva Byers; and a granddaughter, Tessa Elyse Byers.

Marjorie Silvers

Aug. 9, 1921 — July 28, 2011

Marjorie L. (Hall) Payne Silvers, 89, of Bedford, died at 4:47 p.m. Thursday at St. Vincent Dunn Hospital in Bedford.

She was born Aug. 9, 1921, in Olney, Ill., the daughter of Charles Robert and Selma Helena (Muench) Hall. She first married Frank M. Payne; then James Silvers, who preceded her in death.

She was a bookkeeper and was head cashier for Kroger for several years.

She graduated from Bedford High School with the class of 1938. She was a member of Free Methodist Church, American Legion Auxiliary, and Ladies of the Elks.

Survivors include two daughters, Selma (Stephen) Cobb and Susan (Robert) McCauley, both of Bedford; one son, Steven (Janice) Payne of Bedford; eight grandchildren; Edward Cobb of Bedford, Stephenie Cobb Knoll of Indianapolis, Kelly French of Advance, Sean Duncan of Bedford, Melissa Hancock of Indianapolis, Robert Payne of Seymour, Catherine Payne of Bedford and Michael Payne of Seymour; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Helena Emerson; two grandchildren, Christina Payne and Chad Cobb; and one great-grandchild, Megan Click.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home with Pastor John Lane officiating. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery.

Shirley Lee Collins McReynolds

Feb. 18, 1930 — July 29, 2011

Shirley Lee Collins McReynolds, age 81, Bedford, died Friday at 5:20 a.m. at Indiana University Health Bedford Hospital.

She was born Feb. 18, 1930, at West Baden Springs, to Grace and L.W. Collins.

She was a graduate of West Baden High School and Hanover College, where she was a member of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority, and where she met her husband, Harold McReynolds. She attended University of Michigan, and she earned an advanced degree from Indiana University.

Following her mother’s footsteps, she taught school for 43 years in Indiana and Wisconsin. Her final 25 years of teaching were spent at the Indiana University Kelley School of Business where she retired in 1998. After her retirement, a School of Business scholarship was given in her honor.

Shirley is survived by Harold, her husband of 61 years, and by her son, Mark, who lives in Bloomington, Ill. They had lived in Osgood, Ann Arbor, Mich., Indianapolis, and Milwaukee, Wis., and moved to Bedford in 1973. She was preceded in death by her parents and one son, Michael D. McReynolds.

Shirley was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and past president of Delta Pi Epsilon and Indiana Business Educator’s Club, honorary education organizations. After moving to Bedford, she was a member of Psi Iota Xi, Bedford Supper Club, Bedford Birthday Club, and Ladies of the Round Table.

She held leadership positions in her church, First United Methodist Church of Bedford, and on the Boards of Directors of Bedford Regional Medical Center and Lawrence County Community Foundation. She was a 2006 Woman of Excellence award recipient of the Walk with Excellence organization.

Shirley and Harold enjoyed traveling and had made several trips to Europe, South-East Asia, Central America, Mexico and various places in the U.S.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery.

Virginia Rose White, 84, Mitchell, passed away at 6:03 a.m. Friday at St. Vincent Dunn Hospital in Bedford.

Born May 2, 1927, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Harvey W. and Maude (Terry) Nugent.

She was formerly employed at M. Fine & Son and had served as union president of VAW.

Virginia was a member of the First Baptist Church.

Surviving are her daughter, Sandra S. (Philip D.) Asbury of Mitchell; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren

Her parents; son, Phillip Dean Hall; sisters, Dorothy Mae Nugent, Mary Ellen Nugent, Pauline Nugent, and Gladys Nugent; and brother, Harvey W. Nugent Jr., preceded her in death.

Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Knott Cemetery.

George W. Johnson

George William Johnson, 78, of 909 Lafayette Street, Oolitic, died Wednesday at his residence.

Born Sept. 24, 1932, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Earl Z. and Irma Cleo (Turner) Johnson. He married Mary Ellen Harrison on Aug. 4, 1951, and she survives.

He was a carpenter and a veteran of the U.S. Navy.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Ellen of Oolitic; a daughter, Kathy Lynn Tillman and husband Joe of Florida; two sons, Bill Johnson and wife Carol and Bret Johnson and wife Michelle, all of Bedford; a brother, Earl Johnson Jr. of Bloomington; seven grandchildren, Lacey (Johnson) Wagner and husband Andy, Brady Johnson, Brandt Johnson, Hannah Johnson, Colby Johnson, Cameron Johnson and Sarah (Tillman) Chester and husband Scott; and one great-granddaughter, Liberty Grace Chester.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Bobby Johnson.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Bro. Don Tirey officiating.

Burial will follow in the Green Hill Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded at the graveside by members of Gillen Post No. 33 American Legion.

Timothy J. ‘Tim’ Turner Sr.

Aug. 1, 1958 — July 23, 2011

Timothy “Tim” J. Turner, Sr., 52, of Bedford, passed away unexpectedly while on vacation on Saturday in Tucson, Ariz. Tim had attended the National Elks Conference in Phoenix, Ariz. with his fiancée, Bridget LaFree and then a vacation with his Aunt Linn in Tucson.

He was born Aug. 1, 1958, in Mount Vernon, the son of Edna Whaley and Laverne Kaffenberger.

He attended Rensselaer Central High School graduating in 1976. Tim spent four years in Yuma, Ariz. working for Wildlife, Fish & Game Department He was employed at TEVAC in Bloomington.

Tim is an 11-year member of the Benevolent & Protective Order of the Elks, Elks Lodge No. 826 in Bedford where he served in various positions and was the current Exalted Ruler (ER).

Tim was an avid hiker and outdoorsman, always carrying his camera, taking hundreds of beautiful pictures. He published eight volumes of “Frozen in Time” books of photographs. He passed doing what he loved, hiking and taking pictures.

Surviving are his fiancée, Bridget LaFree of Rensselaer; son, Timothy “T.J.” Turner Jr.; and former wife, Ellen Turner, both of Bedford; stepson, Larry Strayer (Deonna) of Oolitic; two step grandchildren, Bryonna and Michael Strayer, both of Oolitic; his mother, Edna Whaley (Ron) of Okeechobee, Fla; sister, Tina Richmond of Orlando, Fla; father, Laverne Kaffenberger (Phyllis); stepfather, Boyce Turner (Virginia) of Heltonville; maternal grandmother, Geneva Holler of Evansville; aunt, Linn Campbell of Tucson, Ariz.; cousins, Catherine Schroeder (Steve) and family, Jacqueline Wilson (Scott) and family, all from Mount Vernon, Dan Olin of San Jose, Calif., and Ross, Kelly and Jillian Campbell of Tucson.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Friday at the Day & Carter Mortuary. The Bedford Elks Lodge No. 826 will conduct a ceremony at 7 p.m. on Friday, at the mortuary.

In accordance with Tim’s wishes, he will be cremated and his ashes spread in the Hoosier National Forrest.

William M. East

William M. East, 84, Bedford, died Wednesday morning at St. Vincent Dunn Hospital.

He was born April 3, 1927, in Quinton, Ky., to Marshall and Trucye (Sexton) East.

He was an Army Veteran, a planerman for 41 years and a member of the International Association of Machinists.

He is survived by his wife, Mary (Speer) East; children, Carolyn Godsey, Michael Allen, Billie Bannister, Julie Graham and Cassie Hill; a brother Creston East; and sister, Anna Brickweg.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Dayla Jackson; and brother, Thomas Lee East.

Memorial Service will be held at a later date.

Barbara Turner

March 3, 1938 — July 27, 2011

Barbara Turner, 73, Mitchell, passed away at 1 a.m. Wednesday at her residence.

Born March 3, 1938, in Bardstown, Ky., she was the daughter of Thomas Woodrow and Mary Magdalene (Hahn) Janes. She was married to Kenneth Johnson and her second marriage was to Sam Turner, both of whom preceded her in death.

For many years she was a waitress at Jack’s Lounge, and had attended Mt. Horeb Baptist Church.

Surviving are daughters, Debbie (John) Alton of Vincennes, Cathy S. (Joe) Lee of Mitchell, Shelley (Randy) Wigley of Mitchell, and Lori (Larry) Parker of Bedford; her mother, Mary “Marie” Crouch of Orleans; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brother, Woodrow Janes of Georgia; and half sisters, Brenda Leach of Bedford and Diane Pittenger of Louisville.

Her father and two grandchildren preceded her in death.

Funeral service will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home with the Rev. Wade Judy officiating. A private family service will be Saturday at Talbott Cemetery.

H. Wayne Gorbett

Nov. 20, 1925 — July 26, 2011

H. Wayne Gorbett, 85, formerly of Mitchell, passed away at 12:25 a.m. Tuesday at Transcendent Healthcare of Owensville.

Born Nov. 20, 1925, in Ripley County, he was the son of Raymond and Martha (VanOsdol) Gorbett. He married Maralyn Holsapple June 18, 1949, and she preceded him in death July 15, 2001.

He was a diesel mechanic and had been employed at Jefferson Trucking and Consolidated Freightways.

He served 25 years on the Mitchell Volunteer Fire Department and was instrumental in organizing the Marion Township Fire Department.

Wayne was a U. S. Navy veteran of World War II.

Surviving are daughters, Teresa Horton of Demopolis, Ala., and Marisa Hull of Elkhart; son, Ken Wayne Gorbett of Poseyville; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

His parents and wife preceded him in death.

Graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Friday, at Mitchell Cemetery with John Holsapple officiating. Military honors will be accorded by American Legion Post No. 250 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9107.

Kurt D. Lee

July 16, 1955 — July 25, 2011

Kurt D. “Killor” Lee, 56, of Bedford, died at 1:15 p.m. on Monday from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident.

Born July 16, 1955, in Bedford, he was the son of Morris and Mary (Brazzell) Lee. He married Teresa Crouch on July 17, 2002 and she survives.

He was a graduate of Bedford High School and I.T.T.

He was a machine repairman for General Motors in Bedford and was a handyman who could fix anything. An avid powerlifter and bodybuilder, he held state and national records for the bench press in his age and weight class.

He loved to ride his motorcycle, tell jokes and had a terrific sense of humor and would occasionally show up in his “Billy Bob” teeth. He was a member of U.A.W. Local No. 440 and the Eagles. Kurt was a wonderful husband and dad.

Survivors include his wife, Teresa, of Bedford; two sons, Kody Lee of Bedford and Kyler Lee of Bloomington; his mother, Mary, of Bedford; four stepchildren, Aleesha Mayes (Marcus) of Bloomington, Abby Hampton (Matthew), Amy Bridges (Matt) of Oolitic, and Zachary Jones of Cherry Point, N.C.; a granddaughter, Amya Mayes; two sisters, Susan Massette (Ryan) of Bloomington and Lori Lee of Bedford; a brother, Alan Lee of Bedford; his mother and father-in-law, Merrill and Marilyn Crouch of Oolitic; two sisters-in-law, Julie Hack (Kevin) of Mitchell and Tracy Nash (Robert) of Franklin; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Morris; and a sister, Karen Lee.

Martha J. Terrell, 87, 503 Bailey Scales Road, Bedford, passed away at 9:42 p.m. Monday at Garden Villa.

Born April 30, 1924, in Indianapolis, she was the daughter of David and Clara (Mundon) Randall. She married James E. Terrell and he preceded her in death in 1985.

She was a homemaker, and had been employed at Sarkes-Tarzian and The Dollar Store.

She was a member of the First Assembly of God and a prayer warrior.

Surviving are sons, James R. (Kelly) Terrell and Terry Dean (Evonda) Terrell, all of Bedford; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a sister, Betty Lou Davis of California.

Her parents; brothers, Dick Randall and Don Randall; and sister, Shirley Randall, preceded her in death.

Graveside service will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday at Green Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Richard Chase officiating.

Gerald A. ‘Pappy’ Pickett Sr.

Gerald A. “Frandaddy” Pickett Sr., 57, of Mitchell, formerly of Louisville, passed away Sunday.

He was a former employee of the Kentucky Department of Transportation. He served a funeral director’s apprenticeship under R.G. Mays Funeral Home in Louisville.

He was a former member of St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church and current member of the Church of the Nazarene in Mitchell.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilson and Jamesella Pickett; a sister, Arletta Pickett-Bibbs; and a grandchild Gerald A. Pickett III.

He is survived by his loving wife, Earlene Sanders; children, Nathan Williams, Gerald Lee, Jacqueline Blackmon, Clyde Pickett, DeMarcus Bailey, and Gerald Pickett Jr.; siblings, Earlyn Reynolds, Glenn, and Mary; 16 grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and caring friends.

His funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at A.D. Porter and Sons Funeral Home, 1300 West Chestnut St., Louisville, with burial to follow in Louisville Cemetery.

John D. Parker

Feb. 27, 1959 — July 23, 2011

John D. Parker, age 52, of St. Petersburg, Fla., passed away on Saturday at Woodside Suncoast Hospice, in Pinellas Park, Fla.

John was born on Feb. 27, 1959, in Sullivan, to Dan and Anne (Jamison) Parker. He was a graduate of Seminole Florida High School, and the University of South Florida.

John is survived by his father and stepmother, Dan and Eloise Parker of Bradenton, Fla., his children, Dan and Sara Parker of St. Petersburg; brother, Jeffrey Parker of St. Petersburg; uncle, David Parker of Bedford; cousins, Matthew Parker and Miles Parker of Bedford; aunts, Barbara Parker Turner of Austin, Texas, and Mary Alice Jamison Griffin of Sarasota, Fla.; and cousins, Kitty Ripley of Austin, Texas, and Connie Hester of Bryan, Texas.

John was preceded in death by his mother Anne Jamison Parker.

Cremation was chosen. Services will be at Cresthaven Funeral Home in Bedford at a later date, with burial in Cresthaven Memory Gardens.

Guy E. Delphia

May 2, 1940 — July 25, 2011

Guy E. Delphia, 71, of Bedford, died at 1:35 a.m. on Monday at Monroe Hospital in Bloomington.

Born May 2, 1940, in Bedford, he was the son of Henry and Dorothy (Easton) Delphia. He married Malinda Burgess on Dec. 31, 1987, and she survives.

He was retired from the Ford Motor Company and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving from June 3, 1957 to June 2, 1961 in Formosa, Japan.

He enjoyed playing his banjo, guitars and was a ham radio operator.

Survivors include his wife, Malinda of Bedford; three daughters, Donna LeClair and husband Mark, Linda Watterson and husband Joe and Marvella Hill and husband Kelly, all of Bedford; two sons, Charles Delphia and wife Amber and Randall Delphia and wife Becky, both of Bedford; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; several step grandchildren; one sister, Linda Clevenger of Parker City; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; and a brother, “Andy” Delphia.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with the Rev. Bob Dailey officiating. Burial will follow in the Green Hill Cemetery with Military rites at the graveside by members of Gillen Post No. 33 American Legion.

Chloie Reynolds

Feb. 10, 1917 — July 24, 2011

Chloie Marie Reynolds, age 94, of Bedford, passed away on Sunday at St. Vincent Dunn Hospital in Bedford.

She was born Feb. 10, 1917, in Silverville, to Ola and Clara (Fisher) Wagner. She married Herman Reynolds in 1933 and he preceded her in death in 1981.

Chloie Marie worked at the Wells Shop in Bedford.

She was a member of the Silverville Missionary Baptist Church.

She is survived by her daughter, Charlotte Mohr of Bedford; and her nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Herman; two sisters, Eula Craig and Grace George; three brothers, Cecil Wagner, Elisha Wagner and Clyde Wagner; and son-in-law, George Mohr.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at Cresthaven Funeral Home. Burial will be in Cresthaven Memory Gardens.

Brian Keith Slate, 49, of Mitchell, died Sunday at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis.

He was born July 18, 1962, in Paoli, the son of Ronald and Betty (Mundy) Slate.

He was a construction worker.

He was a 1982 graduate of Silver Creek High School in Sellersburg.

Surviving are his mother, Betty Slate of Bedford; one son, Dustin Slate of New Castle; two sisters, Melissa (Rodney) Bunch and Christi (Bill) Hicks, all of Bedford; and his paternal grandmother, Dorothy Robinson of Greenwood.

He was preceded in death by his father; and one brother, Mark Slate, in infancy.

Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Fairview Cemetery in Orleans with Pastor Rodney Bunch officiating. Burial will follow.

There will be no visitation.

Robert Hudleson

Sept. 22, 1927 — July 24, 2011

Robert “Bob” Hudleson, 83, Paoli, died Sunday at Indiana University Health Bedford Hospital.

He was born Sept. 22, 1927 in Paoli, the son of Dayton and Kathleen (Kemple) Hudleson. He married Bona Lou Mason on Oct. 17, 1948, and she preceded him in death on Nov. 10, 1999.

He was a U.S. Mail carrier for 40 years, was owner and operator of Paoli Bowling Lanes and was owner and operator of Bob’s Super Burger of Paoli. He was a member of the Paoli School Board for 20 years and was Grand Marshal of the Paoli Indian Summer Festival in 2003.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; one daughter, Eva Jo Huff; one son, Mark Hudleson; and one grandson, Patrick Hudleson.

Ila Jean Erway, age 86, of Wisconsin, formerly of Shoals, passed away in Wisconsin on July 19.

She was born on Oct. 21, 1924, in Plainwell, Mich., to Stewart and Wimifred (Kitzmiller) Brownell. She married Roy O. Erway on Feb. 1, 1941 in Hastings, Mich., and he preceded her in death on Jan. 28, 2006.

Jean was a homemaker, gifted artist, quilt maker, taught ceramics and had a ceramic studio. Roy and Jean moved to the Bedford area in 1978.

She was a member of the Fayetteville Baptist Church.

Survivors include, three daughters, Marrietta Dickson of Reedsport, Ore., Catherine Sue Schimanski of Caledonia, Wis., and Leowa Jencks of Durand, Mich., two sons, James Erway of Morenci, Mich., and Christopher Erway of Kalkaska, Mich., 22 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Roy; one sister, Margret Lord; two brothers, Jack Brownell and Stanley Brownell; and son-in-law, John Schimanski.

Ruth Emeline Southern Eads, age 88 of Bloomington, passed away early Sunday morning at IU Health Bloomington Hospital.

She was born Aug. 14, 1922, in Bloomington, to Roma And Alice Deckard Southern. Ruth worked in manufacturing for 18 years at Sarkes-Tarzian.

She leaves behind her husband of 71 years, Elmer Douglas Eads of Bloomington; son, Ronald Gene Eads and wife Jeanie of Bedford; daughter, Carolyn Kay Miller and husband Dan of Springville; daughter, Rogenia Heichelbech Cox of Bloomington; son, Douglas Burton Eads and wife Brenda of Bloomington; twin sisters, Maudlean McNeal and Audlean Prather of Bedford; and sister, Marie Freeman and husband Roy of Bedford. Ruth was the proud granny to 13 grandchildren and 20 great- grandchildren who also survive.

She was born Sept. 15, 1921, in Lawrence County, to Herbie and Flora (Bates) Robbins.

She married Chester E. Courtright on April 16, 1938, in Martin County.

She attended Huron School. She was a member of Shoals Homemakers Club, where she contributed many recipes.

As a homemaker, she was an exceptional cook and loved to experiment with food. She also loved flower and vegetable gardening. She was an exceptional seamstress and made many of her family’s clothes.

She is survived by one son, C. James Courtright, of Shoals; one daughter, Judy Felts, and husband Charlie, of Shoals; daughter-in-law Linda Courtright of French Lick; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Herbie Robbins Jr., of North Vernon; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Kenneth Courtright; and a sister, Lucille Tolbert.

Icel (Jackman) Naugle, 97, of 909 Lincoln Ave., Bedford, died Sunday at her residence.

Born June 14, 1914, in Martin County, she was the daughter of Harry and Flossie (Stiles) Jackman. She married John Lee Naugle on Aug. 27, 1950, and he preceded her in death on Dec. 1, 1970.

She was a graduate of Bedford High School with the class of 1933. She received her B.S. and M.S. degrees in education from Indiana University. She also attended Purdue University and the University of Alaska.

She retired after teaching for 47 years, first at Shawswick Elementary from 1935–40 and then at Stalker Elementary from 1940–82.

She was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church, Retired Teachers of Lawrence County, Retired Teachers Association of Indiana, A.A.R.P., and a charter member of Omicron Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society.

She served on the Board of Directors for the Limestone Girls Club, the Board of Directors for the Bedford Public Library and was a trustee of the Green Hill Cemetery Association.

She lived life to the fullest.

Survivors include one niece; one nephew; three great-nieces; three great-nephews; several great-great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three brothers, George, Lewis and Harold Jackman; one sister, Ruby Drew; and a niece, Sue Bentrud.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. today in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary. Burial will follow in the Green Hill Cemetery.

Nancy L. (Chaillaux) Baker, 71, Bedford, peacefully passed away on Friday at Garden Villa in Bedford.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil L. Baker; her parents, James and Olive Chaillaux; and a nephew, Kent D. Chaillaux.

Nancy had three children, Cynthia (Chuck) Miller of Tok, Alaska, Thomas Baker of Bedford and Melissa (Brian) LuAllen of Bedford; and five grandsons, Dane, Kerr and Eli McPike, all of Bedford, and Cody Baker of Indianapolis and Thomas Baker of Camby.

Also surviving are two brothers, Kenneth (Joyce) Chaillaux of Bedford and Robert (Terri) Chaillaux of Vincennes; and one sister, Sharon (Jerry) Fox of Bedford.

There will be no funeral service as it was her wish to donate her body to Indianapolis Medical Research, in hopes that through further research a cure might be found.

William R. Hopkins, 80, Westfield, formerly of Mitchell, died Sunday at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis.

He was born Jan. 4, 1931, in Bedford, to Fred and Belva (Jones) Hopkins. He married Norma Jean Chapman on Feb. 14, 1953, and she preceded him in death on Feb. 17, 1994. He then married Catherine Walls in September of 1997, and she also preceded him in death on Jan. 9, 2004.

He was assistant manager of Mills Market Grocery in Bedford, retiring in 1984.

He was a graduate of Mitchell High School with the class of 1951.

He was a member of Bryantsville Church of Christ. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving in Korea, and was a member of the American Legion Gillen Post No. 33 of Bedford.

Survivors include one son, Michael K. (Michelle) Hopkins of Carmel; one grandson, Nathan Hopkins of Carmel; one granddaughter, Megan Hopkins of Carmel; and four stepchildren, Daniel (Janet) Walls, Belinda (Dwain) Chaney and Deborah (Larry) Kirk-Walton, all of Bedford, and Randolph Walls.

He was preceded in death by his parents; both spouses; one brother, Lewis Hopkins; and two sisters, June Pruett and Catherine Ratliff.

Mildred Jean Chestnut, 80, of West Baden Springs, passed away at 5:35 a.m. Monday at her residence.

Mildred was born March 13, 1931, in Martin County, to Harry Sr. and Ada Ellen (Moore) Purkhiser. She married George Gale Chestnut on Feb. 5, 1949, and he preceded her in death on Oct. 18, 2010.

She was a 1949 graduate of Shoals High School and had previously worked as a supervisor at the Springs Valley Corporation (shoe factory) in Paoli. She attended The Church at Powell Valley and the Hillham Church of Christ in Christian Union and was a member of the Shoals American Legion Post No. 61 Auxiliary.

She loved to cook and bake and was a former 4-H leader. However, she was most proud to say that she was a “Farmer’s Daughter.”

She is survived by sons, Larry Michael Chestnut and wife Faye of Oolitic and Steven Wayne Chestnut of West Baden; daughters Barbara Sue Free and husband Warren of Valeene and Judy and Wagner and husband LeRoy of Ferdinand; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Harry Purkhiser Jr. of West Baden.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a grandson, Trevor Doan; three brothers, Charles, Virgil and Jim Purkhiser; and two sisters in infancy.

He retired from Lehigh Cement Company with 34 and a half years of service.

Victor Shuler, 74, of Crothersville, died Thursday at Clark Memorial Hospital in Jeffersonville.

He was born Sept. 22, 1936, in Lee County, Ky., the son of the late George E. and Evelene (Estes) Shuler. Victor was married Sept. 9, 2009, to Ruby M. (Miller) Oaks-Shuler, who survives. He was a retired mechanic for Morgan Foods, Inc. in Austin, retiring in 2004 after 51 and a half years of service. He was a member of the Church of the Nazerene in Crothersville.

Patty L. Cain, 67, of Belle Fourche, S.D., formerly of Bedford, died July 5 at the Rochester Methodist Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

Patty was born March 22, 1944, in Bedford, the youngest of 12 kids born to Felix and Leola Chenault.

Patty and her husband-to-be, Mike, both went to Oolitic High School. Mike graduated in ’61 and Patty in ’62. They were married September 28, 1962, in Bedford.

Patty is survived by her husband, Mike of Belle Fourche; son, Barry (Tina) Cain of Gillette, Wyo.; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; her brother, Larry (Janie) Chenault of Bedford; sisters, Norma Jean Ryan, Evelyn Eads, both of Bedford, and Margie Pillow of Boonville; and sister-in-law, Jeanie Fiddler of Oolitic.

Patty was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Kenneth “Coke” Chenault, Ira “Chig” Chenault, Ray Chenault, Felix “Bucky” Chenault; and three sisters, Helen Hollars and Juanita Bennett and Mary Harri .

Scotty Joe Tolbert, 69, Campbellsburg (Saltillo community), passed away peacefully at his home at 3 p.m. Sunday, surrounded by his loving family, after a courageous battle with lung cancer.

Born Oct. 3, 1941, in Saltillo, he was the son of Scott Newton and Jean Ruth (Gould) Tolbert. He married Lucy Jane Dillon July 28, 1983.

He retired from Child Craft in Salem with 41 years of service. Scotty was also an original “American Picker,” buying scrap metal and antiques.

He was a member of the Saltillo Christian Church, and graduated in 1959 from Campbellsburg High School.

Surviving are his wife, Jane Tolbert of Campbellsburg; children, Greg (Laura) Tolbert of Orleans and Amy (Jarrod) Ralph of Greenwood; stepson, Mike (Jamie) Hayes of Mitchell; sisters, Sue Baker of Orleans and Brenda (Tim) Hall of Bedford; two grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

His parents; daughter, Tracy Jo; sister, Cassie Jean Moore; granddaughter, Tracy Ann; and brother-in-law, Ron Baker, preceded him in death.

Marvin Dale Johnson, age 76, passed away on Saturday in Oregon, Ohio.

He was born on Dec. 23, 1934, to Floyd and Mae Johnson in Bedford.

Marvin was a salesman for Dunn Chevrolet for nearly 29 years and he proudly served his country in the Navy from 1956 to 1960 as a tower operator aboard the U.S.S. Hancock.

Marvin is survived by his loving wife of 51 years Joan; his daughter, Pamela (Brad) Heil; stepdaughter, Cheryl (Michael) Shaffer; brothers, Walter Johnson, Charles (Pat) Johnson, Joseph Johnson, Steve (Sharon) Johnson; sisters, Bernice (George) Stultz and Rowena Todd; and two grandsons; Alexander and Nicholas.

Marvin was preceded in death by his parents; as well as his brothers, Bob, Donald and Bill; and his sister, LaDonna Schroder. Marvin enjoyed spending time in his workshop with his grandsons Alex and Nick. Alex and Nick will continue to maintain Grandpa’s workshop in a manner which would make Grandpa proud.

She is survived by her daughter, Lana (Fultz) Ingle and husband Don; grandchildren, Chad Robertson and wife Kim and Cherie (Robertson) Patton and husband Derek; great-grandchildren, Nicole (Robertson) Gulley and husband Jordan, Dustin Taylor, Daron Robertson, Kelsey Robertson, Chaise Patton, Elijah Patton, and Molly Patton; two great-great-grandchildren, Peyton and Abigail Gulley.

He was self-employed in auto sales and was also a licensed insurance agent, a graduate of Bedford High School, class of 1968 and a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Bedford.

Survivors include wife, Cassie Gould of Bedford; parents, Jerry and Claudine Gould of Bedford; one daughter, Carrie (Jim) Butterly of Greenwood; one son, Matt Gould of Cincinnati, Ohio; one sister, Regina (Jim) Buttz of Albuquerque, N.M.; one brother, John (Sue) Gould of Bedford; and several nieces and nephews.

Gordon Reynolds

May 27, 1940 — July 8, 2011

Gordon Frazier Reynolds, 71, a longtime resident of Jackson County, passed away on Friday at his country home in Freetown. He leaves behind a legacy of love for his family, friends, and faith in God.

Gordon was born at the home of Charles and Nellie Reynolds on May 27, 1940 in Bedford. His family relocated to Indianapolis, where he became a big brother to Randy Reynolds.

He enjoyed basketball and was manager of a variety of sport teams throughout high school and college.

He graduated from Warren Central High School in 1958. From there he went on to receive his Bachelor Degree in Science and Masters in Biology from Ball State University.

He romanced Barbara, while he was a student engineer at Naval Avionics. To gain her attention, Gordon often left Baby Ruth candy bars on her desk. Soon after, they were married in Wallace Street Presbyterian Church of Indianapolis. They began their young married life with Gordon accepting his first teaching job at Lapel High School.

After the birth of their two daughters, Gordon and Barbara decided to journey farther south in hopes of someday living on a farm in southern Indiana. In 1967 Gordon accepted a biology teaching position at Seymour High School. In addition, he was a well respected and inspirational coach of football, basketball, cross country, track, and baseball.

Not only did he give extra time to his students, but he found time to volunteer in the Indiana Guard Reserve, ending his 18 year career as a Co1one1.

Throughout his life, Gordon never stopped being a teacher or a coach. He kept in close contact with past students and treasured letters, emails, and postcards he had received over the years. He could always be found at all of his children’s and grandchildren’s athletic, academic, and military events. He was supportive and encouraging, and also believed it was important for each person to make their own life decisions.

He strongly believed in spending time with his family and friends. He loved to share stories of his parents and grandparents and had written books in their memory to pass down to future generations.

The most recent years found Gordon and Barb in Destin or Gulf Shores where he could be found walking the beach, reading a book, listening to the waves, or talking with new friends. He was genuinely interested in the life of each person he met.

Gordon will be remembered as an inspiration to all.

He leaves behind a loving wife, Barbara Ann Reynolds of Freetown; mother, Nellie Reynolds of Bedford; brother, Randy (Pam) Reynolds of Cedar Rapids, lowa; two daughters, Tara (Todd) Croy of Whiteland, Shannon (Bill) Tompkins of Columbus; four grandchildren: Justine Croy, Tyler Croy, Lee Tompkins, and Kaci Tompkins.

Mary Jane (Thompson) Clark Wise, 91 of Franklin passed away Saturday at Johnson Memorial Hospital in Franklin. She was born Feb. 14, 1920, in Lawrence County to James H. Thompson and Lena May (DeFord) Thompson Hardage. She married Gathis Clark, and he preceded her in death. She then married John C. Wise on Dec. 14, 1997 at Smith Valley Baptist Church in Greenwood. He survives.

She was a member of Greenwood Order of the Eastern Star No. 390 where she had served as worthy matron and was a member of the “Kitchen Band” and a charter member of Ransford Chapter Order of the Eastern Star No. 605 of the Indiana Masonic Home where she had also served as worthy matron. She was an original member of the Indiana Masonic Home Choir.

She was a member of Smith Valley Baptist Church in Greenwood and enjoyed cooking, gardening and flowers.

Survivors include her husband, John C. Wise of Franklin; two grandsons, Kyle Clark and Devon Clark both of Greenwood; a daughter-in-law, Jill Clark of Greenwood; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gathis Clark; son, Gaylen Thomas Clark; siblings, infant Richard Thomas Thompson, infant William Thompson, Theodore Haager, James Edward Thompson, infant Roy Thompson, and Charles Eugene Thompson; half brothers, Perry Lee and Norman Dale.

Born Jan. 18, 1949, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Cecil and Ruby (Stevens) Watterson. She married Joe McCuskey and he survives.

She was employed at the Walmart Store for 19 years.

Robert A. Aikin

Another member of “The Greatest Generation” has passed away.

Robert Avril Aikin, age 92, was born in Mitchell, the son of Arthur Avril Aikin and Georgia Mantler Aikin. On Sept. 4, 1949, he married Barbara Ann Sargeant of Seymour. They were blessed with two sons, Robert Andrew (Andy) and Stephen Matthew (Steve).

Bob honorably served our country as a commissioned officer of the 2nd Infantry Division, U.S. Army in the European Theater of Operation from D-day plus 1, June 7, 1944, until V-E Day May 8, 1945. He remained in Reserve status until he retired in 1979 with the rank of Major, A.U.S.

In civilian life he resumed his education and earned a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering at Purdue University. His career encompassed the Department of Engineering of the City of San Diego, the U.S. 11th Naval District and the San Diego County Engineering Department.

Bob always served his church and community. He was Sunday School Superintendent at La Jolla United Methodist Church where he also ushered and taught Sunday school. He was a member of the building committee of the Hope United Methodist Church in Rancho Bernardo, Calif. In Murray, Ky. he was an active member of the First United Methodist Church and at the First Presbyterian Church of Las Cruces, N.M. Bob was a member of the Board of Deacons. He had also worked with youth as a little league coach. Bob was a Parent sponsor of the Albacore Jr. Drum and Bugle Corp. of Pacific Beach, CA, parent sponsor of Indian Guide Troop of Crown Point Elementary PTA in Pacific Beach, CA. Bob made friends wherever he worked and served.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents; and brother (Jack).

Bob is survived by wife, Barbara, of Salt Lake City; sons, Andy (Karen), Steve (Lori); grandsons, Justin, Trevor, Stephen, CJ Strong; and nephew, Jack R.; great-grandchildren, Jennica and Alex; and stepgranddaughters, Sara, Katherine and Michelle.

Robert J. Brown

Robert James “Base” Brown, 79, of Palmetto, Fla., passed from this earth on June 20, 2011, in the Bradenton Hospital, Bradenton, Fla.

He was born Oct. 7, 1931, in Lawrence County, to William Clyde and Harriet (Mann) Brown.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was of the Protestant faith, a member of Masonic Lodge No. 228 since April of 1974, the Kosair Shriners in Louisville, the American Legion Post No. 250 of Mitchell and was a Kentucky Colonel.

He was a retired teamster.

He retired from Smith Transfer in Louisville and moved to Florida in 2001. He married Beverly J. Whelan of Jeffersonville on April 27, 1985.

Surviving him are two sons, Rudy D. Brown of Mitchell and Robert D. (Cheryl) Brown of Venice, Fla.; stepson, Michael (Chris) Whelan of Jeffersonville; four sisters, Barbara Beeler of Mitchell, Mary Teegen-Frazier of Bedford, Ruth Pace of Sevierville, Tenn., and Carolyn McGrath of Loogootee; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one stepgrandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Beverly; and brother, John L. Brown.

Memorial service will be at 7 p.m. on Monday at the Tabernacle of Praise Church on U.S. 50 East of Bedford.

Karen Joy Roach, 53, of Orleans, died at 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday at her residence.

Born Feb. 20, 1958, in Blue Island, Ill., she was the daughter of James and Imogene (Denny) Roach. She married Bernard Berea and he preceded her in death. She was a graduate of Indiana University with a Masters Degree and from Purdue University with a Bachelors Degree.

She was an Art and Math teacher at Chapel Hill Middle School in the Indianapolis School System.

She was a member of the Guthrie Creek Primitive Baptist Church. She was an active volunteer in 4-H and helped with Lawrence County Aquatics meets.

Survivors include her parents of Orleans; three children, Airman David Ford who is stationed in Korea, Clare Ford of Indianapolis and Natalie Berea of Orleans; two brothers, Terry Roach and wife Teresa of Missouri and Neal Roach of Georgia; one sister, Sandy Adams and husband Tony of Paris Crossing; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband and a sister, Kathy J. Bailey.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Elder Roy Motsinger and Elder Mike Chastain officiating. Burial will follow in the Guthrie Creek Primitive Baptist Cemetery.

She was employed as a server at Diamond Jim’s at French Lick Resort and Casino.

Survivors include her husband, Jr., of West Baden; parents, Doug and Sandra Miller of Avoca; two sons, Tyler Dale Smith and Jesse Lee Smith, both of West Baden; a stepson, Jeriah Gamble of Worthington; a granddaughter, Kaylan Jane Gamble; two sisters, Kelly Terry and husband Brent of West Baden and Kimberly S. Becky McCullough-Pate, 73, of Marlow, Okla., formerly of Bedford, passed away March 25 in Duncan, Okla.

Becky was born May 21, 1937, in Lawrence County, to Audrey and Hazel (Hughes) Crane. Becky lived in Indiana before moving to the Marlow area in 1977. She graduated from Shawswick High School in 1955. Becky married James Earl McCullough in Mitchell, in 1961. He preceded her in death in 1966. Becky married Karl Pate in 1981 in Wichita Falls, Texas.

Becky was a homemaker. She loved visiting with family and friends.

Survivors include her husband, Karl Pate of Marlow, Okla.; one son, C. W. “Billy” Burton and his wife Jackie of Avoca; three daughters, Terri Lea Ritchison and husband Doug of Bedford, Peggy Joanne Spaulding and husband James of Bedford and Carol Diann Stegner and husband Charles of Marlow, Okla.; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Bill Crane and Bob Crane, both of Bedford; three sisters, Alta Mae Fields, Euretta Griggs and Cathy Jenner, all of Bedford; two brothers-in-law, Albert McCullough of Mitchell, and Leonard McCullough of Oolitic; one sister-in-law, Peggy McCullough and her daughter Gloria Strunk; special niece that she helped raise, Elizabeth Sue Neal; several other nieces and nephews; and former husband, Bill Burton.

Becky was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Teresa Earlene Taylor; and brother, John Crane.

Melody Lynn Raines, 67, of Fayetteville, passed away after a brief illness on Monday with her family by her side.

Born July 29, 1943, she was the daughter of Leonard and Alice (Huggins) Patten. She married Bill N. Raines on July 14, 1962, and he survives.

She was employed by RCA in earlier years and later worked as a librarian and Title I aide at Fayetteville Elementary School for 24 years. She loved working with the students, giving them love and affection. She served as secretary and historian for the Fayetteville P.T.O.

She attended the House of Prayer in Fayetteville.

Survivors include her husband, Bill of Fayetteville; three sons, Timothy Dean Raines and wife Melinda, Steven Wayne Raines and wife Kim and Bill Andrew Raines, all of Bedford; two daughters, Denise Marie Stephens and husband Morris of Springville and Sharon Elizabeth King of Bedford; seven grandchildren, Brandon Hartman, Jessica Raines, Brandi Raines, Whitney Raines, Emilee Raines, Madeleine King and Lilliana King; a sister, Ellen Townsend and husband Fred of Bloomington; and a brother, Niles “Butch” Patten and wife Cathy of Bedford.

Celia Hackney, 82, of 818 Lincoln Ave., Bedford, died at 11 p.m. on Sunday at Indiana University Health Bedford Hospital.

Born Aug. 23, 1928, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Lloyd and Lucile (Turner) Franklin. She married Ted James Hackney on Aug. 29, 1954, and he died April 13, 1999.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Avoca Baptist Church.

Born Sept. 10, 1944, in Bloomington, Ill., she was the daughter of James and Mary (Boyce) Franks. She married Gene L. Byrd on Sept. 30, 1970, and he survives.

She was a housewife and member of Guide Pointe Church in Bedford.

Surviving with her husband Gene of Mitchell, are three daughters, Laura Deerwester and Mary Damon of Bloomington, Ill., and Bonnie Byrd Williams of Portage; one son, Steven Damon of Portage; and several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Melissa Sue Johnson, 42, Mitchell, left this life Monday surrounded by her family at Indiana University Health Bedford Hospital.

Born in Bloomington Feb. 7, 1969, Melissa was the first child to join her parents, Raymond Johnson and Bonnie (Smith) Haltom.

Melissa proudly attended Grandview Elementary School, Dyer Middle School and Bloomington High School North, graduating in 1987.

Melissa was a well respected member of the Indiana University Health Bedford team taking on various administrative roles. Her work at the hospital gave her great joy in assisting those in a time of need.

Melissa is survived by her parents, Raymond Johnson of Bloomington and Bonnie (Smith) Haltom of Spencer; daughter, Shelbi Nicole Cauble; devoted companion, Lonnie Cauble; and three stepchildren, Brittnay Cauble, Paige Cauble, and Bryce Cauble, all of Mitchell; her maternal grandfather, Charles Smith of Bloomington; sister, Sharon (Johnson) Anderson of Bloomington; brother-in-law, Jeff Anderson; nieces, Jessica (Anderson) Inlow and Hannah Anderson, all of Bloomington; stepmother, Gerry Johnson; stepsister, Becky Turner; stepfather, Michael Haltom; step brothers, Troy Haltom Tony Haltom, Andrew Haltom and Jarrod Haltom; as well as many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandmother, Esther (Mullis) Smith; as well as her paternal grandfather, Theo Johnson and paternal grandmother, Jane (Couch) Johnson; and her aunt, Ellen “Tootie” Emmons.

Melissa was devoted to her family and shared a special bond with her companion, Lonnie Cauble, for over ten years. On Oct. 10, 2001, Melissa’s greatest pride and accomplishment arrived with the birth of her daughter, Shelbi Nicole Cauble. Melissa conveyed and instilled the same positive outlook on life to her young child as she herself followed. Melissa had an adventurous spirit which introduced her to new challenges without any fear. Her high level of intelligence, integrity and a continuous positive attitude made those, who had the fortune of knowing her, better people,. Melissa lived her life to the fullest and would not allow obstacles to stand in her way.

Melissa was an active member in the White River Bow Hunter’s Club in Lawrence County. Melissa not only participated in the club, she was one of the top female bow competitors.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. on Friday in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home. Burial will be in Mitchell Cemetery.

Eva Joann Williams

Oct. 27, 1936 — July 4, 2011

Eva Joann Williams, 74, of Indianapolis, passed away Monday at Community East Hospital, after suffering a brain aneurysm on June 27.

She was born Oct. 27, 1936, in Mitchell, to lifelong residents Fred and Mable (Merry) Carter. Joann was a 1954 graduate of Mitchell High School. She married Jerry L. Williams in 1955, and in 1957 they moved to Fort Campbell, Ky., for her husband’s tour of duty in the U.S. Army.

They eventually returned to Indiana, living in Bedford, Bloomington, South Bend, Munster, Crown Point, Lafayette, and Birmingham, Mich., for a short time.

Joann was employed in the insurance industry for six years, and then chose to devote her life to her family, which she always placed first. Much of her time involved volunteering at her son Gary’s school, and his extracurricular activities such as Cub Scouts, band activities, and others. After her son entered high school, she re-entered the workforce working as a business administrator for various car dealerships in Lafayette and Indianapolis, eventually retiring in 1997.

Joann is survived by her loving husband of 56 years, Jerry Williams; son, Gary (Cheryl) Williams; and granddaughter, Megan Seal, all of whom she loved very much.

Joann’s first son, Randy Scott Williams, who died in infancy; and her parents, preceded her in death.

Visitation will be Saturday from 11 a.m. until the time of service at 1 p.m. at The Church of Christ, 1004 W. Main St., Mitchell. Interment will follow in Mitchell City Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Church of Christ, where Joann and her husband were members since 1956.

Benjamin Jack Baker, 49, of Fayette, Mo., formerly of Bedford, died Friday at Moberly Regional Medical Center.

He was born in Bedford on Nov. 8, 1961. He relocated to Moberly, Mo., in 1977.

He was an avid NASCAR fan and collector of memorabilia. He enjoyed hunting and had six large deer mounts, one of which made him a life time member of the Missouri Show-Me big bucks club.

Above all, his favorite past time was spending time with family, friends and his dog Shadow, preferably around a bonfire or at a race.

He is survived by his wife Felicia and their blended family; his parents, Betty and John Key of Bedford and Ben Baker of Moberly, Mo.; children, Alisha (Monroe) Crites, Melissa and Amanda Baker, and Anthony, Nathan and Casey Sullivan; siblings, Barbara (Tom) Kuruzovich, Barry Baker and Jeanie Payne, Charlie Baker, Lenna (Kevin) Brock and Leisha (Darryl) Terrell of Indiana; nine grandchildren; and countless aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his cousin and lifetime friend Joe Hall.

Mildred J. Stigall, 85, of Bedford, died Saturday morning at Indiana University Health Bedford Hospital.

Born March 13, 1926, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Walter and Mary (Gaines) Pollard. She married James Fount Stigall on Sept. 22, 1945, and he preceded her in death on Feb. 21, 1999.

She was employed at the Central Foundry in Bedford where she retired in 1978. She was a member of the Mt. Pleasant Christian Church.

Survivors include one son, Jack Stigall and wife Agnes of Bedford; two daughters, Mary Ann Todd and husband Gerald of Heltonville and Ronda J. Hillenburg and husband Dwight of Heltonville; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband, James; five brothers, George, Jim, Leo, Roy and Clyde Pollard; one sister, Hazel Tinsley; and one grandchild, Ami’ee Todd.

Mary Lou Blondin, age 65 of Mitchell, passed away on Saturday at Indiana University Health Bedford Hospital.

She was born on Dec. 9, 1945, in Indianapolis, to Paul & Clara (Buford) Brooking, she first married Larry Brazzell and he preceded her in death in 1996, she later married Paul Blondin on Sept. 8, 2005, in Gatlinburg, Tenn., and he survives.

Mary Lou was a teacher at Bedford North Lawrence Career Center.

Mary Lou is survived by her husband, Paul Blondin of Mitchell, three sons, Brian Brazzell and wife Amy of Mitchell, Travis Brazzell and his companion Debbie Chisham of Mitchell and Matthew Brazzell of Medora; three stepdaughters, Christina Gilmer of Kentucky, Melissa Connell of New York and Kimberly Gertister of Kentucky; nine grandchildren, nine stepgrandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; five brothers, Carl Brooking of Tunnelton, Robert Brooking of Leesville, Kenny Brooking of Bedford, Louis Brooking of Zelma and Gary Brooking of Bedford; and one sister, Gladys Brooking of Mitchell.

She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband Larry Brazzell; and one brother, Paul Brooking.

Frank T. Calvage

Nov. 17, 1921 — June 27, 2011

Frank Tony Calvage passed away peacefully on June 27.

He was born in Dawson, New Mexico on Nov. 17, 1921.

He was a caring and compassionate man who loved his family and valued honesty.

He was a Veteran of World War II, who proudly served his country. While in the military, he was captured in the Philippines and spent three and a half years as a POW.

He was a member of Brushy Creek Baptist Church, Taylors, S.C.

He will be remembered for his kind and gentle spirit and his devotion to his family. In his later years, he struggled against Alzheimer’s disease.

He is survived by one son, Matthew, his wife Janet; and two grandchildren, Isaac and Lydia. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews in Indiana.

He was preceded in death by his wife and one son.

A memorial service will be held at his graveside at Gilgal Cemetery in Heltonville at 3 p.m. on Wednesday.

Clara G. Miller, 90, of Avoca, passed away at 10:14 a.m. Sunday at the IU Health Bedford.

Born on June 1, 1921, in Estill County, Ky., she was the daughter of Andrew Jackson and Margaret (Morefield) Willoughby. She married James F. Miller on Aug. 4, 1941, and he passed away on May 8, 1998.

She retired from RCA in Bloomington in 1979 and was a member of the Avoca Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Doug and Paul Miller; one daughter, Carolyn Miller all of Avoca; two sisters, Janet Welch and Ruby Kilner both of Kentucky; three grandchildren, Kimberly Lindsey, Kelly Terry and Kathy Harroll; six great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; five brothers, Lloyd, Robert, Shirley, Earl and Pearl Willoughby (in infancy); two sisters, Lela Lewis and Marjorie Hardin; and a great-great-grandchild, Lee Lindsey.

Richard L. Gose

Richard L. Gose, retired City of Bloomington Fire Chief, passed away on Sunday at his daughter’s residence in Thomasboro, Ill.

Richard was born on March 26, 1933, in Quincy, and was the son of Charles and Geraldine (Orrell) Gose. He married Joan (Campbell) Gose on July 1, 1953, and she preceded him in death in 2005.

He was an Army Veteran where he served as Sergeant.

Richard was hired by the City of Bloomington Fire Department on April 2, 1957. He became Chief of the Department in 1972, and held that job until his retirement on Sept. 1, 1979.

He was a member of the Am Vets, American Legion, Moose Lodge and Eagles Lodge.

Richard is survived by three daughters and their husbands, Wanda (Mark) Allen of Bedford, Sandy (Bob) Mooney of Greer, S.C., and Vicky (Cale) Coffin of Thomasboro, Ill.; one brother Don (Carolyn) Gose of Mattoon, Ill.; five grandchildren, Chris (Margie) Clouse, Amberly (Ryan) Moore, Craig Mooney, Colby (Ireli) Babbs and Jacob Babbs; and five great-grandchildren, Rylan Clouse, Sierra Clouse, Kendelle Moore, Hank Moore, and Nicholas Babbs.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Joan; two sisters, Martha Hovis and Betty Hendricks; and one brother Bill Gose.

Boyd ‘B.P.’ Sproles

A memorial service for Boyd “B.P.” Sproles will be at 5 p.m. on Saturday at the Peerless Church, approximately two miles east of Old Ind. 37, at Needmore, and approximately three and a half miles north of Breckenridge Road. Boyd passed away in Hollywood, Fla., where he had lived for a number of years. He grew up in Peerless and was a 1966 graduate of Needmore High School.

He was employed briefly at the Bedford Coke plant before enlisting in the United States Army, serving in the Missile Intelligence Dept. in Okinawa, Japan, Fort Campbell, Ky., and Homestead, Fla.

He was self employed. His passion was caring for others, along with his wife Connie, as caregivers.

He was of the Christian faith. He was an avid football fan.

Boyd is survived by a daughter, Deana Leigh Sproles-Jones of Bedford; three grandchildren, Landon, Lacy and Logan; three great-grandchildren, Braxton, Emily and Brooklyn; two brothers, Dennis (Priscilla) Sproles of Williams and Chester (Karen) Sproles Jr. of Martinsville; two sisters, Diana Marlene Sproles Miller of Bedford and Eleanor (Marvin) Sproles Williams of Mims. Fla.; one uncle, Morris (Shirley) Smith of Fountain City; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Boyd was preceded in death by his wife, Connie; parents, Chester and Alberta Sproles; one brother-in-law, Norman “Duke” Miller; one niece; and one great-niece.

Max E. Mundy

Max E. Mundy, 76, of Newberry, S.C., passed away June 28, 2011, at Palmetto Medical Center, Columbia, S.C.

Born on July 4, 1934, in Martin County, he was a son of the late Claude and Daisy Tincher Mundy.

Mr. Mundy retired after 45 years of service as electronics engineer with L3 Communications Interstate Electronics Corp. Throughout his

career, he worked on a variety of defense projects.

He graduated from Huron High School with the class of 1952 and continued to enjoy yearly luncheons with his classmates and almost never missed the Alumni Banquet held at Spring Mill.

He is survived by his wife Donna Mundy; children, Danita Mundy, Dwayne Mundy, and David Jeffcoat Jr.; grandchildren, Alex Looke,

Arielle Mundy, Charlotte Stegall, D.J. Jeffcoat and Jason Jeffcoat; and a brother, Morris Mundy of Davis, Calif.

He was predeceased by his parents; and a brother, Merlin Mundy of Mitchell.

Memorial services were June 30, at Central United Methodist Church in Newberry, S.C.

Cynthia L. Becker

Jan. 27, 1954 — June 28, 2011

Cynthia L. (Moreland) Becker, 57, of Bedford, passed away Tuesday at her residence.

She was born in Flint, Mich., on Jan. 27, 1954, to Ralph D. and Patricia L. (Tuller) Moreland. Cynthia was a graduate of Carman High School in Flint, Mich., and attended University of Michigan-Flint studying history.

Cynthia was a homemaker, past president of the Sherwood Oaks homeowners association, a member of the Bloomington Quilting Guild and involved in the high school and youth hockey organizations.

She had many interests in life such as cooking, quilting, sewing, traveling, home decorating, painting, camping, piano, guitar, genealogy and politics.

Cynthia most of all, was an avid reader with history being her passion.

She is survived by her husband William; sons, Garrett A. Becker and wife Angela (Bir) of Fort Wayne and Kyle R. Becker and wife Jessica (Wolfson) of Concord, Calif.; granddaughter, Regan Becker; mother Patricia L. Moreland of Flint, Mich., sister, Jana Cromwell and husband Clides of Flushing, Mich.; and several nieces and nephews.

Cynthia was preceded in death by her father, Ralph D. Moreland; brother, Steve Moreland; grandparents, Earl and Ruthie (Thompson) Tuller; and two granddaughters, Addison Becker and Lillian Becker.

Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Saturday at the Allen Funeral Home 4155 S. Old State Highway 37 Bloomington.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
