John R. Fiddler

Sept. 16, 1921 — Nov. 17, 2008

John R. Fiddler, 87, Bedford, died at 12:35 p.m. on Monday at Westview Nursing Home & Rehabilitaion Center in Bedford.

Born Sept. 16, 1921, in Eastland, Texas, he was the son of Jesse and Callie (Stevens) Fiddler. He married Julia Jane Arbuckle on Sept. 7, 1940 and she preceded him in death on March 30, 2007.

John was an Air Force veteran of World War II, serving as a ball gunner on the B-17 in England.

John was quite an entrepreneur, he was quite an artist, he could freehand anything and recognized that talent. He started Johnny’s Paint Shop in 1938 which has now changed to the business name Johnny’s Sign Shop. John was known for developing and building Broadview Addition. He built six bowling alleys throughout Southern Indiana and was the owner of JJ Construction, a foam form business on Fifth Street in Bedford.

He was the first president of the Bedford Lions Club, Commodore of the Bedford Boat & Sportsman Club, member of the American Legion Post No. 33 in Bedford, Bedford Masonic Lodge 32nd degree Mason, a member of the Scottish rite.

We rejoice in the fact that John accepted Jesus Christ to be his Lord and Savior on Oct. 5, 2008 and was baptized at Westview Nursing Home, Praise the Lord!!

Survivors include one son, Jay Fiddler and wife Janet of Bedford; two daughters: Suzie Woody Mowery of Bedford, and Patty Fiddler Hirons of Richmond; nine grandchildren: Bob Fiddler and wife Leesa of Bedford, Malissa Ikerd and husband Larry of Bedford, Michelle Inman and husband Travis of Bedford, Bill Woody and wife Robyn of Tennessee, Jimmy Woody, JoniSue Ryan and husband Matt of Bedford, Laurie Hirons, Timmy Hirons, and Michael Hirons; 12 great-grandchildren: Lana Morales, Jake Fiddler, Bailey Fiddler, Morgan Fiddler, Madeline Ikerd, Tyler Inman, Sydney Inman, Luke Woody, Jesse Woody, Jamie Woody and her daughter Leah, William Woody, Julia Woody; and five great-great-grandchildren: Gabe, Gavin, Isabelle Morales, Ella and Elizabeth Hirons; and one brother, Floyd Fiddler of Hermitage, Tenn.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and one sister, Helen Deacon.

Private funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday at Cresthaven Funeral Home. Pastor Travis Inman officiated.

Burial was at Cresthaven Memory Gardens. American Legion rites were performed by Post No. 33 Bedford, along with Masonic rites by the Bedford Lodge.

No calling hours were scheduled.

Jeffrey S. Collins

Jan. 30, 1967 — Nov. 18, 2008

Jeffrey Scott Collins, 41, Mitchell, died at 2:19 p.m. Monday at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

He was employed at Tieman Tires.

Survivors include his wife, Lavonda (Taylor) Collins, Mitchell; a daughter, Kayla Collins, Mitchell; his mother, Judith Joan Collins, Georgia; three brothers: Billy Collins, Kentucky, and Mitch Collins and Mike Collins, both of Virginia; and one sister, Donna Johnson of Georgia.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Mitchell Cemetery, where burial will follow.

Morton Keller

Morton Keller, 78, 607 Sunny Acres Drive, Bedford, died Tuesday at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

He was born Oct. 19, 1930, in Lawrence County, the son of Eugene and Goldie (Sheetz) Keller. He married Elsie Johnson on July 17, 1954, at Englewood Baptist Church.

He retired from M. Fine & Sons in Bedford, where he was in shipping and receiving.

He was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of Englewood Baptist Church

Survivors include his wife, Elsie Keller of Bedford; three daughters: Penny Smith and husband Ed of Bedford, Patricia Keller of Bedford, and Ilene Lantz and husband John of Bedford; one son, Richard L. Keller and wife Denise of Bedford; one brother, Gerald “Hop” Keller of Bedford; 10 grandchildren: and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters: Lois Hornback, Judy Hazard, Nora Cox, Ruth Byrd, and four brothers: Paul, William, Pete, and Kermit Keller.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Cresthaven Funeral Home. Burial will be in Cresthaven Memory Gardens with graveside rites by American Legion Post No. 33.

Jeffrey A. Boruff

Dec. 18, 1946 — Nov. 16, 2008

Jeffrey A. “Jeff” Boruff, 61, of Brownsburg, formerly of Owensburg, died at 3:23 p.m. Sunday at Hendricks Regional Hospital in Danville.

Born Dec. 18, 1946, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Maurice Hatfield and Maribel (Reynolds) Boruff. He married Ellen Fancher on Dec. 30, 1967, and she survives.

Jeff graduated from Indiana University with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. He retired from the Internal Revenue Service. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Vietnam War.

Survivors include his wife, Ellen of Brownsburg; two daughters: Janice Fisher and husband Robert of Lizton, and Jennifer Blanford and husband Ryan of Coatesville; seven grandchildren: Alicia Hedges, Ashleigh Blanford, Eleanor Blanford, Emma Isabel Blanford, Samuel Blanford, Austin Honey, and Janellyn Fisher; two brothers: Ron Boruff of Owensburg and Steven Boruff and wife Katrina of Bloomington; one uncle, William Hirth of Springville; and nephews: Adam Boruff of Bloomington and Mike Boruff of Henryville.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter, Brittney Blanford; and nephews: Brent and Aaron Boruff.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Elmwood Chapel of Day & Carter Mortuary with Jeff Hauersperger officiating. Burial will follow in the Owensburg Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded at the graveside by members of Gillen Post No. 33 American Legion.

Nathan Hackney, 23, 1915 14th Street, Bedford, died Monday in Bloomington.

Loydd R. Inman

Loydd Robert “Bob” Inman, 86, of Bedford, passed away at 2:30 a.m. on November 16, at his residence.

He was born on December 6, 1921, in Bedford, to Primus Victor and Nellie Mae (Stotts) Inman. He joined a brother Richard and later welcomed a sister, Daisy.

Bob graduated from Martinsville High School. He played for the golf team and also was a golden gloves boxer.

He married Bernice K. Grubb in 1950 in Martinsville. They had three children: Robert Ora, Denise Kay, and Terri Lea. His children were very special to him.

He was a construction worker and was a member of Laborers’ International Union No. 741 for 50 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II decorated with an EAME Theater ribbon with three bronze stars and victory medal WW II.

Bob enjoyed hunting and fishing with his brothers-in-law; Johnny, Clarence, Clyde, and Bud. He was an avid reader and enjoyed telling stories about his adventures to his kids and to his grandchildren. Each and every one of them were very special to him and the highlight of his life. Everyone looked forward to have Grandpa call and sing “Happy Birthday” each year. Each visit to Grandpa’s house ended with him saying “see you all when.” He will be greatly missed and forever held dear in our hearts.

He is survived by his wife, Bernice. They lived in the same neighborhood and walked to school together as children. He thought she was the most beautiful girl in Bedford. Also surviving are a son, Robert Ora Inman and wife Beth of Bedford; and a daughter, Denise Tillett and husband Jeff of Mitchell; grandchildren: Bobby (Debbie) Lewis and their children: Emilee, Hannah, and Madison of Harrodsburg; Dain (Roxana) Inman and their daughter, Idalia of Speedway, Zach, Ashlea, and Seth Inman of Bedford, Jonathon Srygler of Bedford and daughter Mariah of Bloomington, Terry Wayne (Kristy) Srygler and their daughters, Alexis Krebbs and Eden Srygler of Avoca, Jeffery (Korisha) Tillett of Bedford, Michael (Tabby) Tillett and daughter Ellie of Bedford, Mathew and Andrew Tillett of Mitchell, Tessa Kuster and children, Nathan and Abigail Kuster and Brooks Sherrell of Bedford, and Michelle Johnson and sons: Cree and Coda of Bedford; one brother, Richard (Betty) Inman of Martinsville, nephews, Carl and John; and sister-in-law, Alice Folk of Bedford.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Primus and Nellie Inman; his stepfather, Ernest Knoy; and it broke his heart to lose his daughter, Terri Lea, on March 28, 2006.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Wednesday at Day & Carter Mortuary in Bedford with Jeff Tillett officiating. Burial will follow at White River Baptist Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded at the graveside by members of Gillen Post No. 33 American Legion.

Maurice B. Wood

Maurice B. Wood, 95, died Saturday.

He was born Aug. 16, 1913, in Mitchell, S.D., the son of Jay and Myrtle (Florey) Wood. He married Evelyn (Anderson) Wood in 1940, and she survives.

Mr. Wood was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving as a radio telegrapher on Midway Island. He joined the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1926 on confession of faith, and was an active member of Bedford First United Methodist Church until ill health halted his activities.

Mr. Wood was employed by the J.C. Penney Co. Inc., for 43 years, during which time he managed seven Penney stores, retiring from the J.C. Penney store in Terre Haute, in 1972.

He was a member of the American Legion Gillen Post No. 33 in Bedford, a former member of Bedford Kiwanis, and was an accomplished wood worker, specializing in scrollsaw work, and made over 100 clocks.

Surviving with his wife, Evelyn, are a son Richard J. Wood and wife Sari; a daughter, Sally Alesia and husband Ronald; four grandchildren, James Alesia and wife Alice of Fort Wayne, Stephen Alesia and wife Tammy of Indianapolis; Andrew Wood and wife Jennifer of Arlington, Va., and Sally Torres and husband Louis of Plainfield; a stepgrandson, Jason Little of New York City; four great-grandchildren, Alex, Ann Marie, Jacob and Emily Alesia; a sister, Phyllis Robertson and husband Earl; and two nephews of Roanoke, Va.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home in Bedford with Pastor Tim Ahlemeyer officiating. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery in Bedford.

Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Sarah E. Boone

April 1, 1926 — Nov. 13, 2008

Sarah Ellen Boone, 82, Indianapolis, died at 3:55 p.m. Thursday at her residence.

She was born April 1, 1926, the daughter of Ralph and Hallie (Colvin) Meadows. She married Herman Boone on Oct. 16, 1945, and he preceded her in death.

She was a homemaker.

Survivors include three sons, Mark Boone, Jeff Boone and Doug Boone and wife Donna, all of Indianapolis; four daughters, Susie Brim and husband Robert of Heltonville, Cathy Bray of Indianapolis, and Sandy McKee and husband Danny and Connie Young and husband Kevin, all of Reelsville; two sisters, Ellen Murphy and Nellie Polk, both of Bedford; three nephews, Scott Polk of Bedford, Steve Murphy of Indianapolis, and Kenny Polk of Martinsville; 17 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one son; one grandson; and one great-grandson.

Deborah E. Henderson

Deborah E. Henderson, 52, Bedford, died at 10 p.m. Saturday at Wishard Memorial Hospital in Indianapolis

Born Dec. 22, 1955, in Indianapolis, she was the daughter of Charles Neil Cox and Judith Marie “Judy” (Austin) Cox Haberman.

She worked at South Haven Coil in Bedford for many years, and was a homemaker.

Survivors include her mother, Judy Haberman of Indianapolis; her father, Charles Neil Cox of Mitchell; one daughter, Amy Turpen and husband DeWayne of Bedford; one son, David Henderson of Bedford; grandchildren, Derek and Garrett Turpen of Bedford, and Taylor and Andrew Watts of Orleans; one sister, Ronelle Vandgrift and husband Donald of Jeffersonville; two brothers, Rich and Brad Haberman, both of Indianapolis; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandmother, Marie Fee.

Donald R. Lewis, 79

Feb. 26, 1929 — Nov. 14, 2008

Donald R. Lewis of Bloomington died at Bloomington Hospital on Friday, November 14, 2008, at the age of 79.

He was born to Ralph Lewis and Helen (Thomas) Lewis on February 26, 1929, in Bloomington. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. Don was a school principal of Smithville School, and Ellettsville and Edgewood schools, an acting superintendent for RBBCSC. He taught at Needmore, University School, and coached and taught at Unionville. He also was a teacher and counselor at the Alternative School in Bloomington. Don also was the Richland Township Trustee for over 30 years.

He was a member of the Ellettsville Masonic Lodge #245, the Bloomington VFW and American Legion, Stonebelt Shrine Club, Murat Shrine, Ellettsville First United Methodist Church, Retired Teachers Association, Monroe County Trustee Association, NRA, Ellettsville Lions Club, served as a Republican Precinct Committeeman and attended South Union Christian Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Marci Jane Lewis and brother-in-law Phil Gilmore.

Don is survived by his sons, Michael Lewis of Ellettsville, Scott Lewis of New Guinea, Steve Lewis (Grace) of Ellettsville and Mark (Debbie) of Washington, GA; daughters, Vickie Lewis (David Jenner) of Ellettsville, Tina Webb (Doug) of Gosport and Genell Ferrell (Chris) of Memphis, TN; sister, Judy Gilmore of Bloomington; great-aunt, Laurie Goodman of Bloomington; fiancee, Lou Ann Antonetti of Bloomington; and nine grandchildren.

Visitation will be held at Chandler Funeral Home on Monday, November 17, 2008, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 18, 2008, at the funeral home, with Rev. Jimmie Cain officiating. Interment will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery. Monroe County Honor Guard will perform a Military Graveside Service.

Joshua Heath Aslinger-Arrowsling, 24, of 1315 R Street, Bedford died November 5.

Born Aug. 6, 1984, in Indianapolis, he was the son of Darrell Lee Aslinger and Sheila Renee (Bailey) Phillippe. He worked for Ronnie Ryan Construction and attended the Tabernacle of Praise.

He was a great friend to everyone and was finally at a place in his life where he was doing great. His laugh and smile would light up any room he entered. He was an AMAZING father, brother, son, and friend. He loved his family and friends more than life itself. He is truly loved and will be deeply missed. He was a family oriented man leaving behind his loving girlfriend, Lisa Vance and her three daughters: Kyra, Kaylin and Kylie.

Steven L. Shapuras, 52, Mitchell, passed away at 1:55 a.m. Friday at Skyline Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn.

Born Feb. 4, 1956, in Westville, Ill., he was the son of Robert and Mary Ann (Delhaye) Shapuras. He married Michelle M. Tungate on May 10, 1980.

He worked for General Motors from 1974 until 2008, where he was a superintendent of quality control for General Motors in Fort Wayne.

He graduated from Westville High School in 1974 and General Motors Institute in 1979.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and Shrine Club in Danville, Ill. He enjoyed watching NASCAR (specifically following Kevin Harvick), and football, gardening and hunting with his friends, Rod, Gary, and Joe. He also enjoyed camping at Sugar Mill Lake with his family and dog, Scruffy, in the spring and summer months.

Surviving are his wife, Michelle Shapuras of Mitchell; a daughter, Jodi Shapuras of Mitchell; his parents, Robert and Mary Ann Shapuras of Westville, Ill.,; a brother, Robert W. Shapuras and wife Jill of Terre Haute; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday in the Memorial Chapel of the Chastain Funeral Home with the Rev. C. Allen Colwell officiating.

Carl W. Stone

Carl W. Stone, 73, of 415 Ind. 458, Bedford went to be with the Lord at 7:53 p.m. Thursday at Bedford Regional Medical Center.

Born, April 4, 1935, in Martin County, he was the son of Rafael D. and Ophia Marie (Bridgewater) Stone. He first married Becky Sue Mayden and she preceded him in death. He then married Mildred Fenander (Swango) on April 15, 1984, and she survives.

He was a retired meter reader with Public Service and was a member of the Hillcrest Christian Church.

Surviving with his wife, Mildred are one son, Jeff Stone and wife Diane of Bloomington; one grandson, Matthew H. Stone of Bloomington; one granddaughter, Courtney E. Stone of Bloomington; one sister, Mary Alice Porter and husband Wally of Mitchell; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Russell L. Stone; and his first wife.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Monday from the Elmwood Chapel of Day & Carter Mortuary with the Rev. Charlie Scott officiating. Burial will follow in Lawrenceport Cemetery.

Harry C. Delpha

Harry C. Delpha, 98, a lifetime resident of Oolitic, passed away at 6:45 a.m. Thursday at the StoneBridge Health Campus.

Born on Jan. 19, 1910, in Oolitic, he was the son of Henry Delpha and Mary (Bellotti) Delpha. He married Alma Moore on Nov. 18, 1933, and she passed away Dec. 3, 1986.

He was a milk deliveryman for Johnson Creamery and had routes in the north end of Bedford, Oolitic, East Oolitic all the way to Needmore. After more than 38 years he retired in 1970. Today, he is often fondly remembered by many as their milkman.

He was a Veteran of W.W. II serving with the Army Air Force and a member of the American Legion Gillen Post No. 33. He was a member of the Oolitic Baptist Church.

Surviving are one daughter, Treva Olson and husband Ric of Bedford; two grandsons, Matt Parker and wife Alicia of Bedford and Miles Parker and wife Blaine of Bedford; and his great-grandson, Harrison Parker of Bedford. He is also survived by one brother, William (Bill) Delpha and wife Barbara of Bargersville; three sisters, Mabel Lewis of Mitchell, Pauline Baker and husband Harold of Bedford, and Ilene Wintergerst of Spencer; and several nieces and nephews.

Harry was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two children. Donald Eugene a toddler and Peggy an infant; five brothers, Louis, Jimmy, Robert (Bob), John and Paul who was an infant; and two sisters, Marjorie Christenberry and Mary Ellen Delpha.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday from the Elmwood Chapel of Day & Carter Mortuary with Rev. Bob Dailey officiating. Burial will follow in Cresthaven Memory Gardens where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Gillen Post No. 33.

She was a retired seamstress.

Lt. Col. J. Ken Hodges

April 18, 1935 — Nov. 10, 2008

Lt. Col. J. Ken Hodges, 73, U.S. Army Ret. passed away at 7:27 p.m. on Monday at Dunn Memorial Hospital.

Born April 18, 1935, in Bedford, he was the son of Palmer Hodges and Rhue (Blackburn) Hodges.

He graduated from Bedford High School and Saint Martin’s College, Olympia, Wash. He then entered the Army as a Private and was promoted through the ranks to Sergeant First Class; he received a direct commission to Second Lieutenant Colonel June 1987 as a regular Army Lieutenant Colonel with 28 years of service.

A Bedford police officer for three years prior to being called to fly helicopters in Vietnam, he was dual rated aviator in helicopters and fixed wing single and multi engine, instrument rated in both types of aircraft and flew several thousand hours. Some of his assignments while in the Army were; two tours in Vietnam flying helicopters as an Air Calvary Commander, instructor pilot, Primary Helicopter Flight Training Center, Ft. Walters, Texas, Director of Custody, United States Military Prison, Ft. Leavenworth, Kan., Chief of Doctrine and Systems, VII Corps, Germany and many others. His decorations include; Master Aviator Wings, Legion of Merit, two Distinguish Flying Crosses, two Bronze Stars, three, Meritorious Service Medals and along with several others.

After retirement from the Army, he was selected as Lawrence County’s Director of Community Corrections and was also a Probation Officer for 15 years before retiring again in 2002.

He was a charter member of the Community Baptist Fellowship Church, Life Member and Past Commander of the American Legion, Past Chef De Gare 40/8 and past Trustee of the Bedford Elks Lodge.

He married the former Connie Wever on Aug. 28, 1955, and Connie preceded him in death on Dec. 16, 1998. He then married the former Sue Edington on Sept. 9, 2000, and Sue preceded him in death on July 16, 2006.

Surviving are one daughter, Kenna Jo Hodges of Bedford; one son, SGM Chris Hodges, U.S. Army, Ret. of California; one stepdaughter, Amy Davis of Indianapolis; three granddaughters: Kristen Hodges of Bloomington, Eileen Hodges of California and Mi Su Hodges of Virginia Beach, Va.; one grandson, Joey Hodges of Bedford; and one stepgranddaughter, Kylie Davis of Indianapolis.

Family members that preceded him in death are his grandparents; parents, Palmer and Rhue Blackburn Hodges; one son, Kay T. Hodges; two brothers: Gene and Charles Hodges; two sisters: Margaret Bridwell and Mary Stapp, and one granddaughter, Christa Hodges.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Community Baptist Fellowship with Rev. Jon Lineback and Eric Kennedy officiating. Military rites will be accorded at the church by members of the American Legion Gillen Post No. 33. Cremation will follow with burial at a later date in Cresthaven Cemetery.

Gloria Stottman, 68, Woodridge, Va., died at 9:40 a.m. on Friday at her daughter’s home in Virginia.

Born July 31, 1940 in Clark County, she was the daughter of Andrew Jackson and Thelma (Ogle) Dickey. She married Wallace Stottman and he preceded her in death on Feb. 9, 1994.

She was a homemaker, a former member of First Baptist Church of Bedford, a member of Restoration Christian Center of Bedford and Central Baptist of Woodbridge, Va.

She worked at White River Lodge in Bedford.

She was a loving mother, daughter, sister, wife, grandmother and great grandmother. Family was her life.

Survivors include six children: Janice Williams of Virginia, Steve Zollman of Bedford, Jim Zollman of Virginia, Donnie Zollman of Mitchell, Todd Zollman of Indiana and Spring Stottman of Florida, 14 grandchildren: Jennifer Rankin, Donnie Williams, Jordan Zollman, Jossi Zollman, Samantha Zollman, Christopher (Todd) Zollman, Jeremiah Zollman, Aaron Zollman, Alexis Zollman, Alannah Zollman, Zoe Zollman, Zane Zollman and Nathaniel Stottman; three great-grandchildren: Abbey Rankin, Lilly Rankin and Richard Keller; and one brother, Ronald Dickey of Nabb.

She was preceded in death by, brothers and sisters: Leroy “Jack” Dickey, Donnie Dickey, Jeanie Brown and Judy Neal.

Carl R. Leonard, 86, Orleans, passed away at 8:42 a.m. Saturday at Bloomington Hospital of Orange County in Paoli.

Born April 6, 1922, in Orange County, he was the son of Andrew C. and Flossie (White) Leonard. He married Evelyn E. Garrison on Oct. 20, 1946.

He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II and a lifetime member of the Cecil C. Martin American Legion Post No. 250.

Carl retired from the U.S. Forestry Service in Bedford with 30 years of service as a surveyor and inspector.

He was a member of the Englewood Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn E. Leonard of Orleans; sons, William C. Leonard and wife Ann, Brent D. Leonard and wife Kim, and Brad J. Leonard and wife Marty, all of Bedford; grandchildren, Andrea, Carl, Christie, Andrew, Seth, Sara, Abby, Angie, Caitlin, Elizabeth, Matt Woods and family and Chris Woods; great-grandchildren, Gage, Jaiden, Anna, Shanna, Devin, Casey, Shawn, Nathaniel, Dalton, Joel, Matt Phillips, Nicki Jones, Casey Jones, and Stacy Phillips; and several nieces and nephews.

Born May 27, 1921, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Delbert A. and Ethel (Allen) Todd.

She retired from Indiana Limestore Company after 33 years in the personnel office and had worked many happy years in the office at RCA prior to World War II.

Her parents, Delbert A. and Ethel (Allen) Todd; her husband John Jay Stevens; her sisters Thelma Lois Todd, Gaile Cummings, Marjorie Todd and Dorothy Dean (as a child); and also one brother, Ralph F. Todd, and another brother in infancy preceded her in death.

She will sadly be missed by her two daughters, Susan Ann Vallion of Fort Wayne and Diana Gaile Bryant of Bedford; her two sons-in-law Robert D. Vallion and Johnie Bryant; three grandchildren whom she loved dearly: Laura Isom (Todd) Gross of Bloomington, Rob (Susan) Bryant of Indianapolis and Rachel Bryant (Brad) Harmon of Portland, Oregon. Five great-grandchildren will miss her hugs and kisses and “special treats” she always shared at the kitchen table.

A more honest person could not be found.

She retired from NWSC Crane in 1992. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Williams.

Survivors include her husband, Robert Bass of Sarasota; three sons: Dave Roush and wife Carola of Linton, John Roush and wife Kassie of Washington, and Dan Roush and wife Connie of Shoals; one daughter, Jennifer Martin and husband Richard of Port Charlotte, Fla.; two stepsons: Eric Bass and wife Theresa of Bloomington, and Michael Bass and wife Lori of Martinsville; 18 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two sisters: Leona Gala of Sarasota, Fla., and Genie Warner of Gas City.

Robert Walter “Bob” Brown Sr., 82, Bedford, died at 5:37 p.m. Tuesday at Bedford Regional Medical Center.

He was born Feb. 19, 1926, in Heltonville, the son of Marshall and Maudie (Withers) Brown. He first married Betty Lou Kinder and she preceded him in death on July 24, 1975. He then married Geraldine Evans on Feb. 19, 1982, and she survives.

He was a purchasing agent at NWSC Crane. He graduated form Shawswick High School with the class of 1944. He was a member of Southland Church of Christ and the American Legion Gillen Post No. 33. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and the Korean War.

Surviving with his wife Geraldine Brown of Bedford; are three sons: Robert W. Brown II of Bedford, Leslie Brown and wife Tammy of French Lick, and Jeff Evans and wife Terri of Williams; two daughters: Sharon Koppelman and husband Terry of Warba, Minn., and Janie Hunter and husband Danny of Heltonville; 15 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mildred Chapman of Williams; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Harold, Bill and Arthur Brown, and one sister, Marjorie Lynch.

Rose L. Moffitt, 61, Shoals, died Tuesday at her residence.

Born June 1, 1947, in Washington, she was the daughter of Paul and Louise (Hellums) Padgett. She married Paul G. Moffitt on Feb. 17, 1964, at St. John’s Rectory in Loogootee.

She worked at Perfect Fit in Loogootee until her illness. She was a wonderful mother and homemaker. She was of the Christian faith.

Survivors include her husband, Paul G. Moffitt, Shoals; two daughters: Virginia Steele and husband Richard of Springville, and Victoria Sipes and husband Neil of Indian Springs; four sons: Paul Joseph (serving in Iraq with the National Guard) and wife Darlene of Loogootee, Jason Moffitt of Shoals, William James and wife Rachel of Shoals, and Patrick and his companion Rayna Crisp of Loogootee; 21 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one sister, Darlene Ridgway and her husband Larry of Loogootee; and several nieces and nephews.

John D. “Jack” Canfield, 75, Bedford, died at 5:28 p.m. Monday at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

Born April 24, 1933, in Shoals, the son of Harry L. and Vern M. (Courtright) Candfield. He married Mira Jo Guthrie in 1952, and she survives.

He worked in the grocery business; last at Midtown Food Market in Bedford; he started at Kroger in Bedford in 1950, and later owned Canfield Grocery in Bedford.

He is a 1951 graduate of Bedford High School, a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, where he served as president of the Parish Council, Knights of Columbus Council No. 1166, and served as a board member of Southern Indiana Center for Independent LIving (SICIL).

Surviving with his wife, Mira Jo Canfield of Bedford are two daughters: Cathy Canfield of Bedford, and Terri Delisle and husband Frank of Colleyville, Texas; one son, J. Micheal Canfield and wife Robin of Bloomington; four grandsons: Justin, Jared and John G. Canfield, and Ryan Delisle; two granddaughters: Stacie Deckard and husband Tyler, and Samantha Menna and husband Silvio; six great-grandchildren: Taylor and Ian Canfield, Olivia Newlin, Max Deckard, Ellie Canfield, and Caitlyn Menna; one sister, Lucile Gilstrap of Crawfordsville; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Jane Corbin; and one brother in infancy.

Born July 1, 1917, in Petersburg, she was the daughter of Louie F. and Oma Estelle (Willis) Traylor. She married Robert E. Hicks, who preceded her in death in 1992.

She had worked at Woolworth and J.C. Penney, was a member of New Union Christian Church and a U.S. Navy veteran.

She is survived by four sons: Robert Earl Hicks Jr., James R. Hicks, Joe D. Hicks, and Timothy L. Hicks, all of Bedford; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two brothers: Robert Traylor of Indianapolis, and Donald Traylor of Petersburg; and two sisters: Norma June Naylor of Owensboro, Ky., and Marjorie Jean Colgate of California.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one son, Gary E. Hicks; and one grandson, Robert Dale Hicks.

William Lloyd Craig, 87, a resident of Core Nursing and Rehab Center, formerly of 3231 Pumphouse Road, Bedford, went home to be with his Lord and Savior at 12:15 a.m. on Monday at Core Nursing and Rehab.

Born May 21, 1921, in Lawrence County, he was the son of William E. and Loda (Canada) Craig. He married Marjorie A. Wilson on Sept. 30, 1939, and she survives.

He was a minister, a carpenter and builder. He was a member of the Glenn Lawn Pentecostal Church of Seymour. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He loved everyone and never met a stranger. He shared the love of God with everyone he met.

Surviving with his wife, Marjorie of Bedford; is one son, William P. Craig and wife Doris of Bloomington; three daughters: Judith A. Melvin of Bedford, Janice G. Lewis and husband Jerry of Wilkes-Barre, Pa., and Joy Ellen Hunt and husband Jon of Bedford; 11 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; two brothers: Glen Craig of Belleview, Fla., and Ted Craig of St. Louis, Mo.; two sisters: Lois Shelton and husband Orville of West Virginia, and Ruthie Sanders and husband Lloyd of Seymour; and one half-brother, Matthew Craig of Heltonville.

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; one grandson, W. Troy Craig; two brothers: Wilbur and Roy Craig; and one sister, Mildred Townsend.

Mary Alice (Todd) Stevens, 87, Bedford, died at 10:05 a.m. Tuesday at Bell Trace Health and Living Center in Bedford.

She had been personnel director at Indiana Limestone Co.

Survivors include two daughters: Suzanne Vallion, Fort Wayne, and Diana Bryant, Bedford; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Lawrenceport Cemetery. Burial will follow.

James R. Horner

March 25, 1924 — Nov. 3, 2008

James R. Horner, 84, 12012 Tunnelton Road, Bedford, died at 10:17 a.m. Monday at Monroe Hospital in Bloomington.

Born March 25, 1924, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Thomas and Frieda (Rimke) Horner. He first married Jean Sherrill, who preceded him in death in 1973. He married Joann Fish on Oct. 25, 1988, at Mt. Pleasant Church in Bedford, and she survives.

He was waste water treatment operator at General Motors, and an assistant to Leonard Clark DVM. He was an active member of Mt. Pleasant Christian Church, a member of UAW No. 440, and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Surviving with his wife, Joann Horner of Bedford; are one son, James A. Horner and wife Anita of Bedford; three daughters: Jill Green and husband Bob of Greencastle, Debbie Todd and husband Toby of Heltonville, and Sherry Baker and husband Tracy of Bedford; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary Romolo and husband Louis of Mercerville, N.J.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Jean (Sherrill) Horner; and four brothers: Robert, Thomas, Donovan “Bub,” and Jack Horner.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home with Brother Jeff Hudelson and Brother Fred Barger officiating. Burial will be in Tunnelton Cemetery.

James W. Eversole

May 13, 1947 — Oct. 31, 2008

James Wallace Eversole, 61, Mitchell, passed away at his home with his beloved wife and cherished children and grandchildren by his side on Oct. 31, at 7:10 p.m. He has gone to be with Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Jim was born of goodly parents, John Wallace and Lorena (McPherson) Eversole, on May 13, 1947, in Bedford, and they preceded him in death on Oct. 10, 1964, and Jan. 29, 2005.

He is survived by his wife, Marianne Lemen Eversole, whom he married on Nov. 9, 1979.

He is survived by one son, John and his wife Kathy, and their three daughters, Bethany Lynn, Gabbrielle Elizabeth, and Chloe Ann of Plano, Texas.

He is also survived by five daughters, Susan Ray and husband Mike of Mitchell, and their three daughters, Emily Susanne Wing and husband Ryan, and their daughter, Alexis Jayne of Indianapolis; Ashley White and husband Roger, and their daughter, Lilian Grace of Orleans; Amanda Barrett and husband Brad of Provo, Utah; Sharon Minton and husband Matt of Plainfield; Jill True and her children Devan Elaine, and Christian Alan of Mitchell; Betsy Pace and husband Kevin, and their three daughters, Kirsten Elaine, Sierra Beth, and Heidi Louise of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and Elizabeth Richardson and her husband Steve, and their two daughters, Elaine and Madelynn Ann of Greewood.

He is also survived by his brother, Robert Keith Eversole and his wife Brenda of Madison, and their daughter, Sarah Beth Andrews and husband Shannon, and their daughter, Ava Maxine of Hope.

Jim graduated from Mitchell High School in 1965. He helped his mother with their walnut business, Eversole Products, for several years. He worked at gypsum for eight years, and Central Foundry for 25 years. He also owned Eversole Telephone Systems for over 25 years. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He held many callings in the church and loved serving our Savior. He loved spending time with his family. He also enjoyed nature and loved hunting, target practice, fishing, and walking at Spring Mill State Park with his wife, Marianne before his illness. He became ill with leukemia in February 2006. The courage, faith, and strength he showed made him a giant among men and he will be deeply missed by his family and friends.

The funeral will be in Bedford at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 1010 22nd Street, at 1 p.m. on Tuesday. Burial will be in Mitchell Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Chastain Funeral Home from 4-8 p.m. today and from noon until the service on Tuesday at the church.

Honorary pallbearers are: Aaron Ray, Joe DeWeese. and Shannon Fitzhugh. Pallbearers will be his son, John Eversole, his sons-in-law, Mike Ray, Kevin Pace, Steve Richardson, Matt Minton, and Steven Johnson, his brother, Bob Eversole, and his only grandson, Christian True.

Thelma Davis, 88, of Bedford, died at 10:35 a.m. on Friday at the Bedford Regional Medical Center.

Born July 12, 1920, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Enoch and Stacie (Bundy) Patton.

She was employed as an insurance agent at the Adamson Agency in Bedford.

She married Charles G. Davis on Oct. 11, 1941, who preceded her in death. She was a member of the Central Church of Christ in Bedford.

Survivors include one daughter, Rebecca Ward and husband Alfred of Bedford; two grandchildren, Stacie Collins and husband Benjamin of Greenwood, and Grant Ward and wife Bethany of Bloomington; two great-grandchildren, Evan and Wyatt Ward.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and two sisters, Alice Root and Betty Mathis.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m on Tuesday from the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Brother Darrell Simon officiating. Burial will follow in Cresthaven Memory Gardens.

Olive A. Holler, 95, Fayetteville, died at 9:20 p.m. on Friday at White River Lodge in Bedford.

Born June 20, 1913, in Taswell, she was the daughter of James and Maude (Taylor) Wilson. She married early in life to Orford Berwick, then married in 1941 Rev. William G. Holler, he preceded her in death in 1981.

She worked locally as a secretary for Ted Jones Agency, & Howard Keach Agency.

She was a graduate of Bedford High School class of 1931, a member of First Nazarene Church in Fort Myers, Fla., and also attended Fayetteville Baptist Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Sharon Younger and husband Howard of Fayetteville; three sons, Bill Holler and wife Rosario of Las Vegas, Nev., David Holler and wife Donna of Oolitic, and Jim Holler and wife Judy of Ft. Myers, Fla.; 10 grandchildren, Joey Younger and wife Pam, Christy Williams and husband Jeff, Wendy Ramsey and husband Scott all of Fayetteville, Karen Williams and husband Bobby of Collierville, Tenn., Casiana Holler of Las Vegas, Judy Valle and husband Gary of Fontana, Calif., Ricardo and wife Charlotte of New York, Angela McKelvey of Fort Inn, S.C., Jennifer Holler of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Michael Holler of Bedford; two stepgrandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, four step-great-grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by parents; five brothers, Raymond in infancy, Frank, Harry, Earl, and her twin Ollie; one sister, Hazel in infancy; and one granddaughter.

Joan E. Emery

Nov. 25, 1970 — Oct. 28, 2008

Joan Elizabeth Emery passed away in Bloomington on Oct. 28, 2008. She was born Nov. 25, 1970, in Woodstock, Ill., to Marlene Emery and Ed Emery. She was named for her paternal grandmother, Joan Emery Prentiss.

She began vocalizing at just a few days old sitting propped up in an infant seat in her pram while her mother played songs for her on the piano.

Joan never stopped singing, and she also taught herself to play piano, which she did all through high school at Bedford North Lawrence and at Marian Heights Academy. She then took her beautiful voice to Vincennes University, where she appeared in many productions. A scholarship, the Joan Emery musical grant, was established by her mother through the Lawrence County Community Foundation to honor her.

In 1989 Joanie sang all over Russia on a trip with her mom. Joan was thrilled to be starting school next term in Art & Design, for which her talent was equal to her musical talent. She composed many musical pieces and painted lovely pictures and she also had a delightful sense of humor.

Joan loved her nieces and nephews: Amanda and Jamie Sands, Rachel, Noah, Tim, Martha Joy, Mary and Molly Batz, Kate and Eamon Emery, Carli Miller, and Chloe and Sam Buse. She also loved her brothers and sisters: Paul and wife Anna, J.J. and Colby and Greg Bruse, Natalie, Tim and Chris. She grieved intensely when her sister-in-law, Mandy Emery, passed away at age 32.

Joanie also sang at many funerals and weddings, even appearing on the Roseanne Barr television show in California in 1999.

She loved her father and mother dearly and her step-family: Mother Ginny, brothers Eddie and Billy, sister Annie and Annie’s children, also her Aunt Barbara and Uncle Jim Graves. She loved animals almost as much as people.

The Bedford Little Theatre was that place which showcased many of Joanie’s singing and acting talents.

All her family will miss her and think of her when they hear David Lanz piano music; “Somewhere Over the Rainbow;” “Wind Beneath My Wings;” “Remember Me” from Phantom of the Opera, and “Amazing Grace” which she sang opening for Twila Paris in Las Vegas, Nev.

The chubby baby with strawberry blond hair is now singing in the Lord’s heavenly choir and livening things up within those pearly gates.

Visitation will be today from 4-8 p.m. at the Allen Funeral Home.

Services will be on Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the funeral home.

Virginia Baker, 91, Princeton, Ky., formerly of Mitchell, passed away at 6:10 a.m. Thursday at Caldwell County Hospital in Princeton, following a long illness.

Born Sept. 3, 1917, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Sherman and Mabel G. (Donaldson) Conley. She married Jesse Loren Baker on Dec. 31, 1938, and he preceded her in death on March 29, 1980.

She was a billing clerk and retired from Carpenter Body Works. Virginia was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Princeton and the First Baptist Church in Mitchell.

Survivors include a son, James Baker and wife Betty of Dallas, Texas; a daughter, JoAnne “Jody” Walker and husband Ken of Princeton, Ky.; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Her parents; husband; one sister; and two brothers preceded her in death.

A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Mitchell Cemetery with the Rev. Daniel Hopkins officiating. Burial will follow.

Arlie Walter Burchard, 86, of 1870 River Road, Tunnelton, died at 7 p.m. on Thursday at his residence.

Born Feb. 1, 1922, in Parkersburg, W.Va., he was the son of George and Margaret Mae (Garrison) Burchard. He moved from West Virginia to Indianapolis where he was employed at Wheelers Restaurant. There he met and married Helen G. Dorsett and she preceded him in death on April 22, 2007.

He was a heavy equipment operator for B & LS construction and a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local. He enjoyed working on and trading cars. He attended Old Union Christian Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Arlisha Charles and husband Scott of Tunnelton; three sons, Robert Dean Burchard and wife Sandra Kay, Don Burchard and Bill Burchard all of Williams; grandchildren, Trisha and Eric East, Kenneth, Tracy, Jason and Donnie Burchard, Angela Bellush; great-grandchildren, Shane Coulter, Sierra, Victoria, Rider, Aiden Isaac and Brianna Burchard, and Tyler Bellush; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; three brothers, George Jr., Roy and Earl Burchard; and two sisters, Emma Lewis and Oleta Duckworth.

She was disabled and formerly employed at Otis Elevator in Bloomington. She was of the Catholic faith.

Survivors include one sister, Gina Hancock of Mitchell; three nephews, Jeffrey Hancock and wife Jamie, and Jeremiah Hancock, all of Mitchell, and Derek Faubion and wife Lindsey of Bedford; three great-nieces, Lynndsey Hancock of Mitchell, and Olivia & Alexis Faubion of Bedford; one aunt, Marietta Maudlin of Salem; and a cousin and close friend, Dawn Brown of Bedford.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and one sister, Cheryl Haganman

Clyde S. Lane, 88, Bloomfield, formerly of Wickliffe, died at 6:50 a.m. Thursday at Westview Manor in Bedford.

He was retired from General Motors in Speedway, and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Mildred E. (Smith) Lane, Bloomfield; a son, Clyde “Richard” Lane, Bloomfield; one granddaughter; three great-grandchildren; and one brother, Dallas Lane, Phoenix, Ariz.
