Allien Atkinson

Jan. 13, 1925 — Nov. 30, 2008

Allien Magner True Rayhill Bugh Atkinson, 83, of Mitchell, died at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 30, 2008, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley, W.Va.

Born Jan. 13, 1925, in Mitchell, she was the daughter of Dewey and Mae (Lanning) Magner. She was a graduate of Mitchell High School class of 1942. She was a member of Spice Valley Church in Mitchell. She retired from Carpenter Body Works in Mitchell.

She married Gene Atkinson in August 2005.

Survivors include her husband of Mitchell; one son, Tom True and wife Linda of Daniels, W.VA.; one daughter, Lynn Rowe and husband Bob of Oakland City; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three sisters, Jencie Sharp and Judy Morris, both of Losantville, and Evelyn Hahn of Dearborn, Mich.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Dewey Magner.

A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Ferguson-Lee Haverly Chapel in Mitchell. Burial will be in Talbott Cemetery in Lawrence County. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of the service Thursday at Ferguson-Lee Haverly Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to Bowers Hospice Center, 454 Cranberry Drive, Beckley, W.VA. 25801, either by mail or in care of the funeral home.

Roma E. Vaughn

March 25, 1924-Nov. 29, 2008

Roma E. Vaughn, 84, of 1207 9th St., Bedford, died at 7 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008, at Dunn Memorial Hospital in Bedford.

Born March 25, 1924, in Bluffton, IN, she was the daughter of Charles and Nora (Elick) Decker. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Bedford. She graduated from Indiana University with Bachelor’s of Science and Master’s degrees. She was a teacher for Shawswick, Oolitic, Needmore, Shoals and Mitchell schools. She was a member of the Retired Teacher’s Association and a member of the AAUW. Survivors include one daughter, Nora Coulter of Fairfax, Va.; three sons, George Stephen (Steve) Vaughn and his wife Karen of Greenwood, Thomas J. Vaughn of Bedford Junction, and Eric P. Vaughn of Herndon, Virginia; one granddaughter, Jessica Coulter. She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers Dale, Bruce and Jack, two sisters Carol and Rowena.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2, at the Day & Carter Mortuary in Bedford. Avonda Mitchell-Jones

Aug. 18, 1917-Nov. 28, 2008

Avonda Mitchell-Jones, 91, of 4192 State Road 158, Bedford, died at 8:10 a.m.. on Friday, Nov. 28, 2008, at the Bedford Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug.18, 1917, in Burns City, Ind., she was the daughter of Aldo and Elizabeth (Sellers) Osborn. She married Lester E. Mitchell and he preceded her in death on Feb. 24, 1940, she later married W. Glen Jones and he preceded her in death in October of 1994. She was a member of the Fayetteville Baptist Church; she taught Sunday school there for many years; she was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a housewife and a babysitter.

Survivors include one son: Bud Mitchell and his wife Judith Ann of Fayetteville; two granddaughters, Cyndi Coldren and her husband David of South Carolina; Leslie Sweigart and her husband Jerry of Bedford; one step-daughter, Wanda LuAllen of Bedford; four great grandchildren, Delaney and Kylie Coldern, Sharayah and Allison Sweigart; four step-grandchildren; one sister, Betty Smith of New Albany, Ind. She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; one son, Osborn; two brothers, Jim Bud and Junior Osborn; two sisters, Violet Boyd and Lena Simmerman.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 2, at the Fayetteville Baptist Church with Rev. Kenny Walden officiating. Burial will follow in the Fayetteville Church of Christ Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 1, at the Day & Carter Mortuary and from 11 a.m. until the hour of service on Tuesday at the Fayetteville Baptist Church. Herbert E. ‘Herb’ Humphries

July 13, 1922 - Nov. 29, 2008

Herbert E. “Herb” Humphries, 86, Alexandria, died Nov. 29 at Garden Villa in Bedford.

A former Alexandria resident, he lived in Marion from 1974-1983, and in the Rochester-Macy area from 1983-2007 before moving to Bedford.

He served with the United States Army from 1942-1945 in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. He retired from Johns-Manville, formerly of Alexandria, after 34 years of employment. He operated a pontoon hauling and maintenance service in the Rochester-Macy area for several years.

Survivors include two sons, Thomas E. (Linda) Humphries of Elwood and Jeffrey (Kim) Humphries of Norman; one sister, Lela Naylor of Alexandria; a companion, Doris Harris of Macy; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Owens Funeral Home, 412 N. Harrison St., Alexandria, with burial to follow in Park View Cemetery in Alexandria.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Owens Funeral Home.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association through the funeral home.

Elsie Harrell Jones

Dec. 4, 1925 - Nov. 30, 2008

Elsie (Harrell) Jones, 82, Heltonville, died Sunday at Bloomington Hospital.

Born Dec. 4, 1925, she was the daughter of Clarence Levi Harrell and Grace Eva McKnight.

She served as trustee in Pleasant Run Township for 20-plus years and also sold Avon and other sales products. She was a member of Mundell Christian Church and the Order of Eastern Star in Leesville.

Survivors include one son, Gerald Jones of Heltonville; two daughters, Carolyn Jarvis and her husband Tony of Bedford, and Cynthia Denniston of Norman; a son-in-law, Robert “Johnny” Basinger of Heltonville; two sisters, Estey Cummings of Heltonville, and Emma Morgan of Oklahoma; four grandchildren, Todd and Reid Denniston, Grace Clements and April Basinger; a caregiver, Lisa Wheeler of Heltonville, and several great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Cecil Jones; one infant son, Gregory Allen Jones; one daughter, Cecilia Sue “Susie” Basinger; two brothers, John N. Harrell and Elmer G. Harrell, and one sister, Florence “Anna” Beyers.

Funeral services will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at Mundell Christian Church, with Brother Jim Fisher and Brother David Fisher officiating. Burial will be in the Mundell Cemetery.

Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Jones Funeral Home in Heltonville.
