Leadingham - Peggy Leadingham of Heltonville died Wednesday, December 31, 1997, at her home.   Born in Putnam County on December 6, 1943, she was the daughter of James and Lula (Mallicoat) Arnold.  She married Jesse Leadingham on August 3, 1974, and he survives.

Also surviving are two sons:  Monte Morphew of Jacksonville, FL, and Scott Morphew of Mooresville; one stepdaughter, Kelly Neal of Greenfield; one stepson, Joshua Leadingham of Indianapolis; two brothers:  Darrell Barrow of Jacksonville, FL, and Glen Arnold of Mooresville; five grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

She was a real estate agent in Jackson County and a member of Greenwood Moose Lodge and Eagles Lodge No. 654 of Bedford.

Mongan - Anna M. Mongan of Pekin, formerly of Bedford, died Wednesday, December 31, 1997, at Pekin Manor.   Born on September 1, 1908, in Heltonville, she was the daughter of Charles Edward and Margaret "Maggie" (Martin) Mark.  She married Maravin M. Mongan on September 11, 1954, and he died on October 12, 1957.

Surviving are one sister, Elfie Newell of Converse, and several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her husband and three sisters.

She retired in 1970 after 42 years as a school teacher in the Bedford, Heltonville, and Hickory Grove school systems.  She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Bedford and had been named Bedford's Woman of the Year.

There will be a graveside service for Anna Mongan at 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 5th, at Mundell Cemetery.  Friends may call from 2-6 p.m. Sunday, January 4th, at The Day & Carter Mortuary.  Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church in Bedford.

Fountain - Gertrude Fountain of Bedford died Tuesday, December 30, 1997, at Dunn Memorial Hospital.  Born in Lawrence County on June 3, 1906, she was the daughter of Edward Pleasant and Carlotta (Pygman) Gaines.  She married Cletus O. Fountain on February 11, 1925, and he died on September 6, 1987.

Surviving are two sons:  John W. Fountain of Bedford and Robert W. Fountain of Jeffersonville; two daughters:  Janet L. Pridemore and Ruth G. Daggy, both of Williams; one brother, Huston Gaines of Bedford; one sister, Helen Easton of Logansport; twelve grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; seven step great grandchildren; four step great great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her husband; one son, Thomas Fountain; two sisters:  Leona Smith and Ruth Gaines; two brothers: Roy and Opal Gaines; and twin grandchildren.

She was a homemaker and a member of Leatherwood Christian Church, a past member of Leatherwood Ludeans, East 50 Birthday Club and Erie Home Economics Club.

Gardin - Roy Gardin of Bedford died December 30, 1997, at his his home.  Born on May 22, 1933, in Chicago, he was the son of Gustaf and Elsa Gardin.  He married Doris Huber on January 30, 1960, and she survives.

Also surviving are four brothers:  Ronald Gardin and David Gardin, both of Valparaiso, Kent Gardin of Crown Point and Guy Gardin of North Judson; three sisters:  Judy Weitgenant of North Judson, Inger Friend of Angola and Lilly Nichols of Clairmont, FL; and several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents.

He was a farmer and a member of Calvary Lutheran Church in Bedford.  A graduate of Purdue University, he served on the boards of Monroe and Lawrence County Farm Bureau Co-Op, Springville Feeder Auction, and Lawrence County Cattlemen's Association.  He was currently the director of ASCS, advisor for the North Lawrence Area Vocational School, and a member of the Purdue Agricultural Alumni Association.

There will be a memorial service at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 3rd, at Calvary Lutheran Church in Bedford with Pastor San Schlie officiating.   Friends may call from 11-1 p.m. Saturday at the church.  The family asks that friends consider making memorial donations to Calvary Lutheran Church or White River Humane Society in care of The Day & Carter Mortuary.

Steele - Jeremy W. Steele of Mitchell died Tuesday, December 30, 1997, at University Hospital as the result of injuries suffered in an automobile accident on Monday in Orange County.  Born July 14, 1975, in Bedford, he was the son of Gary and Angela (Tow) Steele.

He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Tracy and Angela Neal of Bedford; his father and stepmother, Gary and Rita Steele of Bloomington; four half sisters:  Crissy Jones of Tennessee, Nicole Gilstrap of Orleans, and Stacey Neal and Rebecca Neal, both of Bedford; and two grandmothers:  Betty Tow of Mitchell and May Steele of Bloomington.  He was preceded in death by two grandfathers:   James Tow and Eddie Steele; and four great grandparents.

Services for Jeremy Steele will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, January 3rd, at Chastain Funeral Home in Mitchell with Bro. Jean - Ulla M. Jean of Campbellsburg died December 29, 1997, at Bedford Regional Medical Center.  Born in Leesville on September 9, 1916, she was the daughter of Aesop and Sarah Ellen (Wilkerson) Guthrie.  She married Cecil Jean on May 2, 1941, and he survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Sue Williams of Clewiston, FL, and Linda McNeely of Salem, IN; two stepdaughters, Kathryn Sullivan of Salem and Marilyn Rosenbaum of Martinsville; one stepson, Burl Jean of Salem; one brother, Carl Brock of Crothersville; thirteen grandchildren, twenty-three great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by four sisters:  Inez Greathouse, Hazel Williams, Ethel Williams, and Hattie Padgett; and one brother, Creed Guthrie.

She was a homemaker and a member of Mount Carmel Christian Church.

McFadden - Blanche McFadden died Monday, December 29, 1997 at Fontainbleu Nursing & Rehab Center in Bloomington.  Born in Monroe County on September 2, 1907, she was the daughter of Emery E. and Ida L. (Doub) Tredway.  She married Charles E. McFadden on April 24, 1923, and he died November 29, 1987.

Surviving are one daughter, Norma Williams of Bloomington; three sons:  Robert McFadden and Lloyd McFadden, both of Bedford, and John McFadden of Anderson; one brother, Emery "Jake" Tredway of Tampa, FL; one sister, Leota John of New Bedford, MA; eleven grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren, and five great great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husband, one daughter, Maralou McFadden, in infancy; four sisters: Violet Pritchett, Lela Linthicum, Sylvia Martin, and Ruby Owens; two brothers, Merle Tredway and Earl Tredway, and one great grandchild.

She was a homemaker and a member of Guthrie Christian Church.

King - Janet S. King of Bedford died Sunday, December 28, 1997, at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.   Born on October 18, 1934, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Claude Emmett and Mary Olive (Followell) King.  She married Arnold Wayne King on August 13, 1955, and he died August 13, 1993.

Surviving are two sons:  Terry and Kerry King, both of Bedford; two daughters:  Carol Baldwin and Rhonda Miller, both of Bedford; one brother, Eugene Claude King of French Lick; eight grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers, and one sister.

She was retired from Thomson Consumer Electronics and attended Faith Mission in Bedford.  She was a member of TOPS.

Wright - C. Gilbert Wright of Mitchell died Saturday, December 27, 1997, at Dunn Memorial Hospital from injuries suffered in an automobile accident. Born on November 17, 1951, in Pontiac, MI, he was the son of Charles Luther and Margaret (Wheeler) Wright.

Surviving are his mother of Mitchell; three brothers:   David Wright of Auburn Hills, MI, Michael Wright and Patrick Wright, both of Waterford, MI;  two sisters:  Margaret Bendeck of Mission, TX, and Nancy Webster of Mitchell.  His father, Charles Luther Wright, also died in the accident.

He was the owner of Wright Technologies in Orleans.

Services for C. Gilbert Wright will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 31st, at Haverly Mortuary in Mitchell with the Revs. Ottis Crowder and Bill Goodpaster officiating.  Burial will be in the Bethany Chapel Cemetery in Eckerty.  Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, December 30th and from 8:30 a.m. until service time on Wednesday at Haverly Mortuary.

Wright - Charles Luther Wright of Mitchell died Saturday, December 27, 1997, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident.  Born in Doolittle Mills, IN, on October 22, 1928, he was the son of Everett and Alice (Waddle)Wright.  He married Margaret Wheeler on August 21, 1950, and she survives.

Also surviving are three sons:  David Wright of Auburn Hills, HI, Michael Wright and Patrick Wright, both of Waterford, MI; two daughters, Margaret Bendeck of Mission, TX, and Nancy Webster of Mitchell; six brothers:   Ernest, Lloyd, Roy, Jim, Phillip, and Kenneth; six sisters:  Nadine, Mary, Cloise, Geneva, Tanya, and Star; ten grandchildren; and one great grandchild.  His son, C. Gilbert Wright, also died in the accident.

He was the manager and owner of the Spring Haven Motel in Mitchell.

Bowlman - Beatrice M. Bowlman of Mitchell died on Thursday, December 25, 1997, at Bedford Regional Medical Center.  Born in Manitowoc, WI, on October 31, 1915, she was the daughter of Louis and Stella (Kuras) Kielbasiewicz.   She married Charles D. Bowlman on December 14, 1946, and he survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Charlene E. Evans of Mitchell; one sister, Elizabeth DeMay of Ludington, MI; two brothers, Frank Kiel of Lansing, MI, and Edward Kielbasiewicz of Southfield, MI; two grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Mitchell Presbyterian Church and the Presbyterian Church Guild.

Funeral services for Beatrice Bowlman will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, December 27th, at Haverly Mortuary in Mitchell with the Rev. Stephen Kenney officiating.  Burial will be Tuesday, December 30th, in Lakeview Cemetery in Ludington, MI.

Dalton - Helen Frances Dalton of Bedford died Wednesday, December 24, 1997, at Bedford Nursing Center.  Born on February 5, 1912, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Everett Kirby and Etta (Radcliffe) Newkirk.  She married John R. Dalton on October 22, 1930, in Jeffersonville.  He preceded her in death on May 1, 1996.

Surviving are three sons:   Louie Dalton of Bedford, Ronald Dalton of Arkansas, and Jack L. Dalton of Indianapolis;  one brother, two sisters, eight grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husband; one son, Charles Dalton; and four brothers. 

She was a clerk and a homemaker, and she attended Faith Christian Church.

Mitchell - Helen L. Mitchell of Springville died Monday, December 22, 1997, in Bedford.  She was the daughter of Ruben Sylvester and Talitha (Shanks) Delaney.  She married Fredrick Russell Mitchell in October, 1940, and he died in 1956.

Surviving are one daughter, Linda Mitchell of Bloomington; one sister, Christina Fuerst of Hammond; three grandchildren:   Debra Stevens, Nick Herthel, and Christopher Herthel, all of Bedford; three great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her husband, two sisters, and five brothers.

She worked at the Springville Post Office from the late 1940's until she retired in 1985.  She was appointed postmistress in 1969.

Burns - Ruby A. Burns of Bloomington, formerly of Bedford, died Sunday, December 21, 1997, at her residence.  Born May 1, 1930, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Charles and Mary Birdie (Taylor) Kern.  She married Manuel Dwight Burns on January 16, 1949, and he died August 17, 1978. 

Surviving are two sons:   Stephan Burns of Ellettsville and Daniel Burns of Bedford; five sisters:  Eula Gardner and Emma Ira, both of Bloomington, Wilma Jean Sickman of Stendal, Nemie Stone of Unionville, and Rosie Bihler of Almeda, CA; two brothers:  Paul E. Kern and Kenneth Kern, both of Bedford; three grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her husband and one brother, David Kern.

She worked several years at RCA in Bloomington and retired in 1973.  She was a member of Bridge Church of Christ in Unionville.

Mattix - Edna J. Mattix of Indianapolis, formerly of Bedford, died Sunday, December 21, 1997, at St. Francis Hospital in Beech Grove, IN.  Born in Lawrence County on June 9, 1933, she was the daughter of Murvin and Sarah (Carter) Moffatt.  She married William Robert Mattix and he preceded her in death.

Surviving are one son, Robert Dale Mattix of Griffin, GA; one daughter, Carolyn Sue Edmonson of Mitchell; one sister, Shirley Stewart of Bedford; three grandsons, and four great granddaughters.  She was preceded in death by her husband and several brothers and sisters.

She retired as a leasing agent for apartments in Indianapolis and was of Protestant faith.

McLaughlin - Opal McLaughlin of Bedford died Sunday, December 21, 1997, at the Bedford Nursing Home.  Born May 5, 1904, in Greene County, IN, she was the daughter of Riley and Lula (Daugherty) Richardson.  She married Orville McLaughlin in May, 1924, and he died in 1965.

Surviving are one son, Damon McLaughlin of Bedford; one daughter, Melba Keesey of Anderson; four grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husband, one daughter, June Bogard, one brother, one sister, and one grandchild.

She was a homemaker and a member of the First United Methodist Church, Order of the Eastern Star and Veterans of Foreign Wars Women's Auxiliary.

Godsey - Frances G. Godsey of Bedford died Friday, December 19, 1997, at the Bedford Regional Medical Center.   Born November 25, 1915, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Carmino and Carmella Grecco.  She married Doyle B. Godsey on February 22, 1941, and he died April 22, 1993.

Surviving are one son, Phillip Godsey of Fort Wayne, IN; one daughter, Camille Underwood of Oolitic; three grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and two nieces.  She was preceded in death by her husband and three brothers:  Ralph Grecco, Charles Grecco, and Phillip Grecco.

A graduate of Oolitic High School, she retired from GM Powertrain in Bedford.  She was a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church and the St. Vincent Altar Society.

Service for Frances Godsey will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday, December 22nd, at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church with Fr. Bernie Cox officiating.   Burial will be in the Cresthaven Memory Gardens.  Friends may call at the Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home Sunday from 2-8 p.m., and the rosary will be prayed at 6:30 p.m. Sunday.

Patton - Louise W. Patton of Bedford, formerly of Avoca, died Friday, December 19, 1997, at the Bedford Regional Medical Center.  Born in Martin County on June, 12, 1910, she was the daughter of John E. and Leona (Baker) Rowe.  She married Ephriam Patton on September 10, 1927, and he died February 24, 1983.

Surviving are one son, Fred Neil Patton of Avoca; one daughter, Marian Turner of Avoca; eight grandchildren, and several great grandchildren.   She was preceded in death by her husband, one daughter, Shirley Ann Glover; two brothers, Rufo and Leroy Rowe; five sisters:  Luna Morrison, Elizabeth Rowe, Ruth Kirkman, Ola Bridwell, and Helen Barger; and one grandchild.

She was a homemaker and attended Avoca Baptist Church.

Goldsberry - Esther L. Goldsberry of Mitchell passed away Thursday, December 18, 1997, at Jewish Hospital in Louisville, KY.  Born July 11, 1925, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Ralph and Ruth (Vaught) Ritchison.  She married Curtis M. Goldsberry on May 13, 1945, and he preceded her in death September 1, 1988.

Surviving are one son, Robert Dean Goldsberry of Mitchell; one daughter, Mary P. Taylor of Mitchell; two sisters:  Marjorie Simpson of Redick, FL, and Delores Albright of Mitchell; two brothers:  Donald Ritchison and Paul Ritchison, both of Bedford; ten grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husband, one sister, and a great granddaughter.

She was a member of the Mitchell Church of Christ and was a breakfast cook at Dairy Queen.

Harrell - Juanita Harrell of Mitchell died Thursday, December 18, 1997, at Dunn Memorial Hospital.   Born February 22, 19181, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Claude and Alice (Guthrie) Williams.  She married John Nelson Harrell on May 1, 1937, and he died in 1983.

Surviving are two daughters:  Janet Stillions of Mitchell and Sandra Harrell of Maron, MI; three sons:  Bernard Harrell of Franklin, OH, Marvin Harrell of Medora, and John David Harrell of Brownstown;  ten grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husband, five sisters, and one grandchild.

She was a homemaker and a member of Pinhook Church of Christ.

Magnus - Geneva A. Magnus of Oolitic died Thursday, December 18, 1997, at Vencor Hospital in Greenwood, IN. Born in Avoca on October 11, 1917, she was the daughter of Ellis and Nellie (Kirkman) Cain.  She married James Victor Magnus on April 14, 1934, and he died December 5, 1977.

Surviving are two sons:  Henry Magnus of Oolitic and James Magnus of Bedford; one sister, Mildred Buhr of Smithville; six grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her husband; one son, Larry Dean Magnus; one daughter, Melinda Sue Magnus; two sisters,   Maude Smith and Mabel Bridwell; and four brothers:  Carl, Laurel, Fred, and Milo Cain.

She was a homemaker of of Pentecostal faith.

Williams - Lena Pearl Williams of Bedford died Wednesday, December 17, 1997, at Westview Nursing and Rehab Center in Bedford.  Born November 18, 1906, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Trueman and Della (Stigall) Fisher.  She married Henry Ford, who preceded her in death.  She married Harry Williams and he survives. 

Also surviving are one son, Howard W. "Tim" Ford of Bedford; one half sister, Barbara Daulton of Lawrence County; two granddaughters; two great granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her first husband, three sisters:  Lola Boofer, Edith Sego, and Lois Louden; and three brothers:  Lee, Lawrence, and Lester Fisher.

Graveside services will be at 1:00 p.m. Monday, December 22nd, at Cresthaven Memory Gardens with the Rev. Robert Fields officiating.  Friends may call from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Monday, December 22nd at the mortuary.

In 1975 she retired from the Naval Surface Warfare Center-Crane.

Rayburn - Harold N. Rayburn of Bedford died Wednesday, December 17, 1997, at Dunn Memorial Hospital.   Born May 1, 1919, in Bedford, he was the son of Oliver and Addie (Smith) Rayburn.   He married Emma Browning on October 11, 1941, and she survives.

Surviving with his wife are one son, Fred Rayburn of Bremerton, WA; one daughter, Janet Cooper of Bedford; two sisters:  Edith Hemphill of Bedford and Ruth Alice Jennings of Kokomo; six grandchildren, one great grandchild, and one niece.  He was preceded in death by one granddaughter.

He retired from the Indiana Limestone Company and was a member of the First Christian Church.

Terrell - Roy V. Terrell of Mitchell died Tuesday, December 17, 1997, at the Veterans Hospital in Indianapolis.  Born in Lawrence County on June 21, 1920, he was the son of Elza and Cora M. (Pridemore) Terrell.  He married Pauline Napier.

Surviving are two sons:  Ronald Terrell and David E. Terrell, both of Mitchell; one daughter, Sandra Ritchison of Bedford; two sisters: Roxie Terrell of Williams and Sarah Louise Eisle of Bedford: one brother, Roscoe Terrell of French Lick; five grandchildren: and eight great grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by three brothers and four sisters.

He was a retired from Naval Surface Warfare Center-Crane and was a self-employed carpenter and electrician.  A World War II Army veteran, he was a member of the Cecil C. Martin American Legion Post 250, the Marvin R. Davis Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9107, Mitchell, and a lifetime member of Disabled American Veterans.   He was a member of Bonds Chapel United Methodist Church.

There will an 11:00 a.m. graveside service for Roy Terrell on  Monday at Bonds Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery with graveside military rites being accorded by Cecil C. Martin American Legion Post 250 and Marvin R. Davis Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9107, Mitchell.  Haverly Mortuary in Mitchell is in charge of the arrangements.  There will be no funeral service or visitation at the funeral home.

Calentine - Tammy J. Calentine of Bedford died Monday, December 15, 1997, at Bedford Regional Medical Center.   Born March 13, 1965, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Roy and Grace (Beavers) Mitchell.  She married Richard Calentine on May 19, 1984, and he survives.

Also surviving are three daughters:  Heather Dawn Calentine, Brandi Nichole Calentine and Chelsea Mari Calentine, all at home, two brothers:   Roger Mitchell of Mitchell and Kevin Sullivan of Bedford.  She was preceded in death by her father, Roy Mitchell, her mother and stepfather, Grace and Ronald Sullivan, this year.

A 1983 graduate of Bedford North Lawrence High School, she had worked for Johnson Oil Company, Bigfoot Division, in Bedford.

Priddy - Charles Eithel Priddy of East Oolitic died Monday, December 15, 1997, at his residence.  Born in Hardin County, KY, on October 14, 1914, he was the son of Thomas and Mae (Gastineau) Priddy.  He married Thelma Garland on May 23, 1936, and she died July 3, 1993.

Surviving are three sons:  Tom Priddy, Jerry Priddy, and Kirby Priddy, all of Bedford; one daughter, Sherri Scott of Bedford; two brothers:   Garland Priddy of Owensburg, and Merlynn Priddy of Florida;  ten grandchildren; and thirteen great grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his wife and ten brothers and sisters.

He was a farmer and retired from General Motors Powertrain in Bedford.  He was a member of U.A.W. Local 440 and attended Oolitic Baptist and East Oolitic Baptist Church.

Robbins - Charles E. Robbins, Sr. of Bedford died Sunday, December 14, 1997, at Dunn Memorial Hospital.   Born January 12, 1930, in Peerless (Lawrence County), he was the son of Dora and Clona (Ray) Robbins.  He married Mary C. Wykoff on November 30, 1952, and she survives.

Also surviving are three sons:  Charles "Chuck" Robbins, Jr. of Bedford, Joey David Robbins of Leesville, and Benjamin Robbins of Mitchell;  four daughters:  Terri Briscoe, Dora Robbins, and Jenny LuAllen, all of Bedford, and Linda Nicholson of Norman, IN; sixteen grandchildren; two great grandchildren; one brother, Norval Robbins of Bedford; one sister, Mary Colgan of Bedford; and several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Betty Robbins and Peggy Scherschel.

A retired Bedford fireman and businessman, he owned and operated Hoosier Hills Fire & Safety Equipment Co.  He was one of the first E.M.T.'s with the Lawrence County Ambulance Service.  He was a member of the First Christian Church of Bedford, the Bedford Firefighters: Association, the Masonic Cedar Lodge, #161, Leesville, IN, and was a past member of Jaycees.  He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of the Korean Conflict.

Services for Charles Robbins will be at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 17th, at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home with Bro. Stephen Scroggins and the Rev. White - Ronald White of Bedford died Sunday, December 14, 1997, at Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis.  Born October 3, 1938, in Bedford, he was the son of Hobert and Bessie (Kirk) White.  He married Joyce K. Elliott on November 10, 1957, and she survives.  

Surviving with the wife are three sons:  Bryan White and Robert White, both of Bedford, and Larry White of Greenwood;  five brothers:   Robert White, Denny White, Roger White and Jerry White, all of Bedford, and Carl White of Vacaville, CA;  one sister, Vicki Prince of Bedford; and five grandchildren.   He was preceded in death by his parents; one brothers, William White; and one sister, Betty Cooper. 

He was retired from General Motors Powertrain (Central Foundry) in Bedford and was a member of U.A.W. Local 440.  He was of Protestant faith.

Bailey - Loran W. Bailey of Mitchell died Sunday, December 14, 1997, at Dunn Memorial Hospital.  Born in Lawrence County on August 11, 1915, he was the son of Edgar and Dessie (Bowman) Bailey.   He married Sarah Alice Ellis on October 21, 1961, and she died April 3, 1996.

Surviving are one sister, Olive Umphress of Heltonville, and one brother, Larry Bailey of Williams.

He was a retired employee of Naval Surface Warfare Center-Crane.  A veteran of World War II and the Korean War, he served twenty years in the Navy and retired as a chief warrant officer.  He was a member of Mundell Christian Church, Fleet Reserve, and the National Rifle Association.

Strunk - Dorothy Strunk of Fort Myers, FL, died Saturday, December 13, 1997, at Columbia Regional Medical Center.  Born June, 16, 1942, in Marion County, IN, she was the daughter of Regional H. and Dorothy L. (Glassburn) Cole Jr.  She married Clovis Strunk on October 4, 1987, and he survives.

Also surviving are one son, David Lano of Angola, IN; two daughters:  Lois Stillabower of Franklin, IN, and Rachel Lane of Angola, IN; six stepchildren:  Marcia Maulden of Seattle, WA, Gary Strunk and Michelle Smith, both of Oceano, CA, Robin English of Castro Valley, CA, Teresa Hardwick of Franklin, IN, and Lisa Gisler of Boron, CA; four brothers:  Reginald David Cole and Ronald Cole, both of Killeen, TX, Russell Cole and Roger Cole, both of Fort Myers, FL; two sisters:   Paula Sexton of Fort Myers, FL, and Wanda Mason of Alamogordo, NM; six grandchildren: sixteen step grandchildren; and one step great grandchild.

She was an employee of Eckerds Pharmacy in Fort Myers and was a member of the First Christian Church in Lehigh Acres, FL.

Baker - Wilma C. Baker of Springville died Friday, December 12, 1997, at Bedford Regional Medical Center.   Born in Springville on December 1, 1933, she was the daughter of Earl and Mellie Reida (Henderson) Anderson.  She married Robert Baker, and he survives.

Also surviving are one son, Robert Greg Baker of Springville; one daughter, Teresa Picou of Springville; two brothers, Chester Anderson and William Anderson, both of Springville; three sisters, Edith Godsey, Georgia Phillips, and Wanda Reuter, all of Springville; and four grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Blako and Betty Rollins.

She was a homemaker and a member of Springville Grace Baptist Church.

Hancock - Mae Hancock of Bedford died Friday, December 12, 1997, at Bedford Regional Medical Center.   Born on March 31, 1920, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Elmer and Emma (Withers) Willis.  She married William Hancock on May 5, 1952, and he survives.

Surviving with the husband are two stepsons:  W. L. "Butch" Hancock of Lafayette, IN, and W.D. "Skip" Hancock of Bedford; one brother, Walter Willis of Port Charlotte, FL; two sisters, Joan Burton and Betty Dobson, both of Mitchell; six step grandchildren; and three step great grandchildren.   She was preceded in death by one sister, Marie Falkenhof, and one brother, Robert E. Willis.

She was co-owner of Leonard's Confectionery in Bedford during the 1950's.

Nordhoff - Joe Nordhoff of Bedford died Thursday, December 11, 1997, at Dunn Memorial Hospital.   Born April 20, 1920, he was the son of Joe and Valeta Nordhoff.  He married Mabel King in August, 1948, and she survives.

Also surviving are two sons:  Joe Norhoff of Birdseye and John Nordhoff of Crane; two brothers:  Don Nordhoff of Bedford and Tom Nordhoff or Illinois.  He was preceded in death by one sister, Mary.

He was a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Bedford.  Having served in the U.S. Army during World War II, he was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 673 in Jasper.  He worked and retired as a brick and block mason.

Johnson - Linda L. Johnson of Heltonville died Tuesday, December 9, 1997, at her residence.  Born in Lawrence County on July 13, 1943, she was the daughter of Everett E. and Lula A. (Srygley) Turpen.  She married Joseph S. Johnson on June 12, 1960, and he survives.

Also surviving are two sons:  Kevin Joe Johnson of Mattoon, IL, and Troy Shelby Johnson of Oolitic; one daughter, Kimberly Gillespie of Bedford; two brothers:  Virgil Turpin of Bedford and Jesse Turpin of Oregon; three sisters:  Barbara J. Hauser of Pennsylvania, Patsy JoAnn Terrill of Heltonville and Phyllis Jane Johnson of Bedford; ten grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.   She was preceded in death by her parents.

She worked for John C. Groub Company in Seymour and was a twenty-five year member of Fairview Community Church.

Busch - Daniel Jack Busch of Mitchell died Monday, December 8, 1997, at Mitchell Manor Nursing and Rehab Center.  Born in Lawrenceport on June 17, 1902, he was the son of Elmer and Lucretia (McKinney) Busch.  He first married Viola Kathleen Baldwin.  He then married Mabel Sanders, and she preceded him in death.

Surviving are three sons:  Bill Busch and Mike Busch, both of Bedford, and Jerry Busch of Tucson, AZ; one daughter, Ruth Ann Ravencroft of Kelso, WA; several grandchildren; great grandchildren; and great great grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by one son, Thomas Busch, two brothers, and one sister.

A stone sculptor and the designer of the Grissom Memorial, he owned Busch Monument Works in Mitchell.  He was a member of Mitchell Lodge 228 F&AM and Cutter and Carvers Union.

Chapman -  Jesse Chapman of Mitchell Manor Living and Rehab Center, formerly of Huron, died Monday, December 8, 1997, at Dunn Memorial Hospital.   Born September 15, 1909, in Lawrence County, he was the son of John and Nancy (Johnson) Chapman.  He married Anna M. Lynch on March 21, 1936, and she survives.

Also surviving are one son, William D. Chapman of Alabama; one daughter, Nancy E. Mobley of Odon; one stepdaughter, Rose Merry of Mitchell; five grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by one daughter, Karen Terrell, one brother, and five sisters.

He was a World War II Army veteran and was retired from Carpenter Body Works in Mitchell.

Jeffries - Lela Jeffries of Mitchell Manor Nursing and Rehab Center, formerly of Bedford, died Monday, December 8, 1997, at Bedford Regional Medical Center.   Born on August 21, 1894, in Martin County, she was the daughter of Frank and Effie (Pridemore) Terry.  She married Charles Jeffries, and he preceded her in death.

Surviving are one daughter, Irene Haverly of Mitchell; three sons: Charles Jeffries of California, Gordon Jeffries and William Jeffries, both of Florida; and several grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husband and one daughter, Lucille Gilford.

She was a homemaker and a member of the First Christian Church in Bedford.

Patton - Zelma Patton of Bedford died Monday, December 8, 1997, at Shakamak Good Samaritan Center in Jasonville, IN.  Born in Lawrence County on December 6, 1912, she was the daughter of Jesse and Lona (Watson) Allen.  She married Enoch E. Patton on May 15, 1928, and he died June 11, 1986.

Surviving are one son: Donald E. Patton of Bedford; two daughters:  Mrs. William (Sharon) Dillow and Mrs. William (Mary) Darcus, both of Springville; seven grandchildren; seventeen great grandchildren; one great great grandson; two step grandchildren; and six step great grandchildren.   She was preceded in death by one grandson and one great grandson.

She was a member of the Guthrie Christian Church and the Ladies Aid Society of Guthrie Christian Church.  She was a former employee of RCA in Bloomington and Crane, NWSC.

Stephens - Helen J. Stephens of Mitchell passed away Monday, December 8, 1997, at Mitchell Manor Living and Rehab Center.  Born May 3, 1911, Indianapolis, she was the daughter of Chester C. and Edith (Everman) Jacobs.  She married the Rev. Barney L Stephens on June 21, 1936, and he preceded her in death on September 10, 1989.

Surviving are one daughter, Marian J. Stephens of Mitchell, and one sister, Amelia Ann Jacobs of Indianapolis.  She was preceded in death by her husband and two brothers, Robert C. Jacobs and William P. Jacobs.

She was a graduate of Shortridge High School and Butler University and was a librarian.  A member of the First Christian Church and the CWF, she and her husband had served churches in Wisconsin, Georgia, Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Peru and Mitchell, Indiana.  She was a member of Fleur deLis and Order of Eastern Star.

Delpha - Guy Elza Delpha of Bedford died Sunday, December 7, 1997, at Westview Nursing and Rehab Center.  Born in Oolitic on April 11, 1904, he was the son of Matt and Addie (Stewart) Delpha.

Surviving are one brother, Marion Delpha of Bedford, one sister, Blanche Webb of Bedford; and several nieces and nephews.   He was preceded in death by one brother, Henry Delpha, and one sister, Mary Carmel.

He retired from the Indiana Theater, where he had worked for 60 years.

Smith - Mary M. Smith of Bedford, formerly of Mitchell, died Sunday, December 7, 1997, at her residence.  Born in Mitchell on September 29, 1906, she was the daughter of Hayden and Melissa (Miller) Hancock.  She married Ralph Smith in 1929, and he died June 29, 1963.

Surviving are one brother, William E. Hancock of Mitchell and one sister, Grace Sell of Florida.  She was preceded in death by her husband, three brothers, and two sisters.

She was owner of Smith Village Grocery and Gas Station at Ninth St. and SR60 in Mitchell.  She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Spring Mill Homemakers Club, Order of the Eastern Star, and served as president of the Lawrence County Homemakers.

Cahill - Emery P. Cahill of Bedford died Saturday, December 6, 1997, at Dunn Memorial Hospital.  Born on May 16, 1909, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Thomas and Nell Cahill.  He married Violet W. Morris on April 9, 1942, and she died October 31, 1975.  He married Thelma B. Blackburn on September 4, 1978, and she survives.

Also surviving are one son, Donald Cahill of Bedford; three daughters: Sherry Voigtschild of Bedford, Janice Smith of Bloomington, and Rita White of Florida; seven grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by this first wife; one sister, Louis Miller; and one brother, Howard Cahill.

A member of the Free Methodist Church of Bedford, he was a World War II Army veteran and retired from the Naval Surface Warfare Center-Crane.

Evans - Billie J. Evans of Huron passed away Saturday, December 6, 1997, at Bloomington Hospital.  Born May 11, 1933, in Orange County, she was the daughter of Roscoe and Pauline (Leonard) Grider.  She married Wayne P. Evans on January 1, 1959, and he preceded her in death on September 11, 1997.

Surviving are two daughters:   Starr Norwalt of Ellettsville and Brandi Dean Kent of Bloomington; and three stepsons: Wayne Evans of Loogootee, Calvin Evans of Shoals, and Anthony Evans of Bedford.   She was preceded in death by her husband and a brother, Don Richard Grider.

She was a member of the Huron Baptist Church.

Donica - Thurman L. Donica of Shelbyville, formerly of Bedford, died Friday, December 5, 1997, at Heritage House Convalescent Center.  Born in Henry County on April 27, 1922, he was the son of Edward and Jeanette (Helton) Donica.  He married K. Lucille Chadwell on December 14, 1952, and she survives.

Other survivors are two sons:  Dr. James Daugherty of Indianapolis and Philip Donica of Martinsville; two daughters, Valerie Donica of Shelbyville and Cheryl Donica of Loma Linda, CA; and two grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers.

He retired from Indiana Gas Company in Shelbyville, where he was a department head for twenty-five years.  He was a member of Sandusky United Methodist Church and was a World War II Army veteran.

Services for Thurman Donica will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Glenn E. George and Son Funeral Home in Shelbyville with the Rev. W. Harrell - Louise A. Harrell of Bedford died Friday, December 5, 1997, at Dunn Memorial Hospital.  Born April 1, 1901, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Edgar and Effie (Gabbert) Stipp.  She married Lawrence H. Harrell and he preceded her in death on April 4, 1963.

Surviving are one son, Robert D. Harrell of Bedford; one daughter, Carolyn Brown of Vincennes; two sisters:  Mary Norris and Hazel Lee, both of Bedford; ten grandchildren; and eleven great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husband, one daughter, Betty Lantz, and two brothers, Carl and Lloyd Stipp.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Bedford Free Methodist Church.

Hatfield - Nellie Hatfield of Bedford died Thursday, December 4, 1997, at Dunn Memorial Hospital.  Born March 29, 1907, in Greene County, she was the daughter of Verna and Maude (Jackson) Hamilton.  She married Bruce Tinsley on June 12, 1926, and he died December 28, 1961.   She married Marshall Hatfield in 1964, and he died May 16, 1989.

Surviving are two brothers:  Oval Hamilton of Bloomington and Dale Hamilton of Springville; and four sisters:  Lucille Hostettler of Springville, Goldia Brazzell, Leona Pritchett, and Naomi Parks, all of Oolitic.   Preceding her in death were both husbands, two sisters: Norma E. Saunders and Mildred J. Hamilton; and one brother, Vearl Hamilton.

She was co-owner of Bruce Tinsley's Men's Wear in Bedford and a member of the Free Methodist Church in Bloomington.

Camp - Nellie Margaret Camp of Bedford died Wednesday, December 3, 1997, at her residence.  The daughter of W. J. and Anna (Shipper) Suntken, she was born on February 4, 1925, in Hancock County, IA.  She married Gerald Maurice Camp in Sheridan, AR, on January 13, 1946, and he died in 1980.

Surviving are two sons:  Robert L. Camp of Mitchell and the Rev. Melvin D. Camp of Worthington; one daughter, "Deno" Stroud of Bedford; five brothers:  William Suntken of Elgin, MN, Fred Suntken of Burlington, IA, Clarence Suntken of Sioux City, IA, Gerald Suntken of Jacksonville, IL, and Richard Suntken of Council Bluff, IA; four sisters: Elizabeth Foderburg of Rogers, AR, Wibaelina Lyons of Rocky Forge, CO, Dena Rossow of Des Moines, IA, and Geraldine Memitz of Branson, MO, five grandchildren; and one great grandchild.  She was preceded in death by four brothers and one sister.

She was administrator at Bedford Nursing Center from 1974-1989.  For eight years she was the site manager for S.A.F.E.R. , a before and after school child care program at Burris School, and she was a licensed practical nurse administrator-school emergency medical technician.  She was a member of Bedford Business and Professional Women, White Shrine, Licensed Practical Nurses Association, and Lawrence County Prevention of Child Abuse.  She was of Methodist faith.

Hughes - Josephine Hughes of Bedford died Wednesday, December 3, 1997, at Dunn Memorial Hospital.  Born January 24, 1923, in Oolitic, she was the daughter of Ephriam F. and Eva May (Morrow) Taylor.  She married Cecil Hughes on November 18, 1939, and he died June 1, 1996

Surviving are three sons:  Dennis Hughes of Crane, Tom Hughes, and Jerry Hughes, both of Bedford; one daughter, Joyce Sams of Bedford; five brothers:  Glen Taylor, Guy D. Taylor, Herman Taylor and Emery Taylor, all of Bedford, and Gerald "Jake" Taylor of Mitchell;  four sisters:   Christeen Strunk, Adeline Fortner, Ocie Brown, and Wanda Cunnington, all of Bedford; thirty-seven grandchildren; fifty-four great grandchildren; four great great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her husband, one son, Gary David Hughes; two brothers:  Norman Taylor and one in infancy; one sister in infancy; and two great grandchildren.

She was retired from the Dunn Memorial Hospital with thirty-five years of service and was a Gold Star Mother.  She was of Protestant faith.

Naragon - Wayne Naragon, Jr. of Indianapolis, formerly of Huron, died Tuesday, December 2, 1997, at St. Francis Hospital in Beech Grove, IN.  Born July 16, 1935, in Indianapolis, he was the son of Wayne and Helen (Wagner) Naragon Sr.

Surviving are his mother of Huron; an adopted daughter, Jennifer Covey Naragon of Indianapolis; and one sister, Phyllis Alley of Indianapolis.   He was preceded in death by his father.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mitchell.

Casey - William Casey of Bedford died Monday, December 1, 1997, at his residence.  Born August 3, 1910, in Loogootee, he was the son of John Harrison and Pearl (Fletcher) Casey.  He married Luella Burgess on May 7, 1954, and she survives.

Also surviving are one son, John William Casey of Fort Lauderdale, FL; one daughter, Jean Hubbard of Issue, MD; and two grandchildren.   Preceding him in death were two brothers and three sisters.

He was a tool and die maker supervisor and had worked in research and development at the Naval Surface Warfare Center-Crane.  He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.

Cox - Winfred Cox of Bedford died Saturday, November 29, 1997, at his residence.   Born on November 18, 1931, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Thurman and Grace (Stines) Cox.   He married Sarah Tincher on December 24, 1953, and she survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Linda L. Charles of Bedford; one brother, Hubert Cox of Bedford; two grandchildren; and one great grandson.   He was Preceded in death by one son, Donnie Lloyd Cox, and one sister, Lorene Dalton.

He was of Protestant faith.  A Korean War Marine veteran, he retired from Robertson Mills in Bedford and Brownstown and was a member of the National Rifle Association.

Diehl - Thelma Diehl of Bedford died Friday, November 28, 1997, at Bedford Nursing Center.  She was born September 14, 1910, the daughter of Emery and Lou (Tumey) Stewart.  She married Murray George Diehl, and he died in 1986.

Surviving are one son, Gary Diehl of Bedford; one brother, Harold Stewart of Needmore; one sister, Jeannette Franklin of Fort Myers, FL; three grandchildren; two step granddaughters; two great grandchildren; five step great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her husband; three brothers, Gordon Stewart, Clifford Stewart, and Delbert Stewart; and one sister, Flo Owens.

She was a member of Gulletts Creek Baptist Church, a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, and was a former president of the Dunn Memorial Hospital Pink Ladies.

Powell - Jack W. Powell of Bedford died Friday, November 28, 1997, at his residence.  Born in Alturas, CA on August 27, 1924, he was the son of E. C. and Alma Irene (Grant) Powell.  He married Jean Lee on April 2, 1946, in Bedford, and she survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Jill Webb of Bedford; one brother, Evan Powell of Chattanooga, TN; and three grandchildren, Kyle Smith, Chad Smith, and Jeanna Smith, all of Bedford.

A Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War, he retired as a tool and die maker from the Naval Surface Warfare Center-Crane.  He was a 1941 graduate of Modoc High School in Alturas, CA.  He was a 50 year member of the American Legion Gillen Post 33, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1686 in Oolitic, St. Vincent dePaul Catholic Church, and Knights of Columbus.

Demaree - Steven "Brent" Demaree died Thursday, November 27, 1997, at his home.  Born February 19, 1970, in Bedford, he was the son of Harry "Benny" and Janet (Dalton) Demaree.

He is survived by his parents of Bedford, one brother, Jonathan Demaree of Bedford, and one nephew, Christian Demaree.  He was preceded in death by his grandparents and one brother, Jeffrey.

He was a machinist and mechanic and was employed by C&M Manufacturing.  A member of Leatherwood Christian Church, he was an Eagle Scout, and a veteran of Desert Storm, serving in the U.S. Army.

Covey - Carl W. Covey of Bedford died Wednesday, November 26, 1997.  Born in Owen County on May 30, 1919, he was the son of Ephriam and Laura (Prince) Covey.  He married Mary Goldsberry on October 26, 1940, and she survives.

Also surviving are two sons: Fred H. Covey and Edward E. Covey, both of Bedford; one brother, Clifford Covey, Fayetteville; one sister: Laura Anderson of Greenwood; three grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by two brothers, Clarence Covey and Clint Covey, and four brothers and one sister in infancy.

He served in the infantry of the United States Army and was a member of the American Legion Gillen Post No. 33.  He was also a member of the Boat and Sportsman Club and the National Rifle Association.

Services for Carl Covey will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 28th, at the Cresthaven Funeral Home with burial following in the Cresthaven Mausoleum.  Friends may call from 3-9 p.m. on Friday, November 28th, and on Saturday from 9 a.m. until service time.

Dodds - Raymond Wray Dodds of Port Charlotte, FL, formerly of Lawrence County, died Wednesday in Port Charlotte, FL.  He was born in Lawrence County, the son of McClellan and Myrtle (Wray) Dodds. He married Abigail Sears on December 24, 1927, and she died May 11, 1989.

Surviving are one son, Raymond Dodds, Jr. of Arcadia, FL, four grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his wife and two sisters.

A member of Mundell Christian Church, he was a retired stone mill worker and a farmer.

Memorial services for Raymond Dodds will be held at a later date.  The National Cremation Society is in charge of arrangements.

Hicks - Helen L. Hicks died Tuesday, November 25, 1997, at her residence.   Born July 19, 1930, in Mitchell, she was the daughter of Arthur Lyle and Grace Ruby (Greer) Franklin.  She married James Robert Allen, and he preceded her in death.  She married Benny A. Elliott on December 24, 1953, and he died April 28, 1983.  She married Dennis Hicks on November 9, 1984, and he survives.

Also surviving are one son, Benny Joe Elliott of Bloomington; three daughters: Tangie Southern of Bloomfield Hills, MI; Sally Ann Elliott of Houston, TX, and Margie L. Riley of Orange County, CA; three stepchildren: Melissa Ann Pace and Cameron Scott Hicks, both of Bloomington, and Susan Katheryn Hicks of Indianapolis; one sister, Marge Quackenbush of Bedford; four grandchildren; and four step grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by two husbands and one sister, Margaret Spaulding.

She had worked as a clerk at the R Street Grocery and Armstrong Paint & Wallpaper Store in Bedford.  She was a member of the First Baptist Church.

A memorial service for Helen Hicks will be at 3:00 p.m. Friday, November 28th, at the First Baptist church with the Revs. Jon Lineback and Rick Catlett officiating.  Burial will be at Green Hill Cemetery.  There will be no visitation.  The Day & Carter Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.   Memorial contributions may be made to Bedford Regional Hospital Hospice Program.

Burton - Virginia Adamson Burton died Monday, November 24, 1997, at Hoosier Christian Village in Brownstown, IN.  Born December 10, 1906, in Fayetteville, IN, she was the daughter of Charles and Minnie (Sears) Adamson.  She married Lewis R. Burton on January 4, 1930, in Shelbyville, KY; he preceded her in death in June, 1962.

Surviving are one daughter: Gayle Terris Burton Newby of Norman, IN; one step-daughter, Helen Bruce of Columbus, IN; two grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and one step-son, Kenneth Burton of Sarasota, FL.  She was preceded in death by one brother, Glen Adamson, and two sisters, Mae Sherrill and Ruby Adamson.

She retired in 1963 from the Indiana Flower Shop in Bedford.  She was a member of Old Union Church in Fayetteville, IN.

Judah - Kathleen Judah died Saturday, November 22, 1997, at Hospitality House in Bedford.   She was the daughter of Thomas and Myrtle (Robinson) Hayes and was born in Greene County on July 22, 1920.  She married Bruce G. Judah on December 1, 1939, and he died May 2, 1990.

Surviving are one daughter, Pixie A. Judah of Needmore; one son, Parker D. Judah of Bedford; two sisters: Gereldine Fines of Needmore and Phyllis Clawson of Delphi; four brothers: Don Hayes of Florida, Tom Hayes, Frank Hayes and Richard Hayes, all of Bedford; five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by one son, Bruce A. "Pete" Judah in 1983; one sister, Rose Mary Lee; and two brothers: William and Sammy Hayes.

She was a homemaker and a member of Gulletts Creek Baptist Church.

Newbold - Helen Newbold of Shoals, formerly of Indianapolis, died Thursday, November 20, 1997 at Daviess County Hospital in Washington, IN. She was born July 26, 1911, in Indianapolis. She married George "Pete" Newbold on December 24, 1971, in Bedford, and he survives.

Other survivors are one step-son: Richard Newbold of Indianapolis; one step-daughter, Jeannie Levitt of Indianapolis; four step grandchildren; and several step great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two step-grandsons, and a brother.

Hawkins - Audrey Hawkins of Springville died Wednesday, November 19, 1997, at her residence. Born December 29, 1918, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Leo Leland and Wreathie Day (Voorhies) Hall. She married Albert George on July 11, 1936, and he died on January 26, 1942. She then married James Lloyd Hawkins on April 15, 1955, and he died February 22, 1992.

Surviving are two sons: Steven R. Hawkins of Bedford and Scott A. Hawkins of Springville; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by both husbands, one daughter, Donna Gayle George; one sister, Vivian Brinson, and two brothers, Paul and Murl Hall.

She was a homemaker and a member of Hilltop Pentecostal Church.

Lessig - Roberta Lessig of Bedford died Wednesday, November 19, 1997 at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on May 1, 1933, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of William and Mary Jane (McCall) Chastain. She married Harold Lessig on April 15, 1950, and he survives.

Also surviving are three daughters; Joyce Lessig of Bloomington, Linda Lessig, and Juanita Card, both of Bedford; two sisters: Juanita French of Bloomington and Betty Roach of Springville; two grandchildren: and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Fay and Ray Chastain, and one sister, Dorothy Lloyd.

Pritchett - Cora E. Pritchett of Bloomington, formerly of Bedford, died Tuesday, November 18, 1997, at Bloomington Convalescent Center. The daughter of John J. and Mary Jane (Hackney) Thomas, she was born in Oolitic on August 11, 1902. She married the Rev. Arthur K. Pritchett in 1917, and he preceded her in death.

Survivors include one daughter, Alma Neff Keltner of Bloomington; one son, John W. Pritchett of Trenton, MO; one brother, William Paul Thomas; eleven grandchildren; seventeen great grandchildren; and four great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, four daughters, Sharon Holloway, Bette Chaney, and two in infancy, two sons in infancy, one brother, and six sisters.

She was a homemaker and a member of Fairview United Methodist Church in Bloomington.

Tincher - Curtis Tincher of Mitchell died Tuesday, November 18, 1997, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born in Lawrence County on August 6, 1908, he was the son of Ewing Tincher and Lola Mae (Beasley) Tincher. He married Iva Chapman on February 14, 1931 in Lawrence County, and she survives.

Also surviving are four sons: Roy, Daniel, Phillip, and Gerry, all of Mitchell; two daughters: Mrs. Gilbert (Doris) Sheeks and Mae Lou Howard, both of Mitchell; twelve grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; and three great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Frank Tincher.

He was retired from Carpenter Body Works and was also a farmer.

Hoffman - James F. Hoffman of Springville died Monday, November 17, 1997, at Bloomington Hospital. Born on March 23, 1941, in Martin County, he was the son of Herbert and Marie (Schwindt) Hoffman. He married Helen Adams on June 27, 1986, and she survives.

Also surviving are his mother, Marie Hoffman; two daughters: Connie Roush and Susan Diamond, both of Shoals; two stepsons: Dennis Adams of Bloomington and David Adams of Ellettsville; two brothers: Donald Hoffman of Bedford and Stephen Hoffman of Shoals; two sisters: Wilma Wampler and Mary Fulford, both of Bloomington; six grandchildren; four step grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father.

He retired as a heavy equipment operator at U.S. Gypsum with thirty-one years of service and was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church of Loogootee.

Beasley - Gregory A. Beasley of Mitchell died Saturday, November 15, 1997, at his residence. The son of Jesse David and Patricia (Tanksley) Beasley, he was born in Bedford on August 18, 1976.

Surviving are his father and stepmother, Jesse and Charlene Beasley of Mitchell; his mother and stepfather, Patricia and Chester Banks of Bedford; one brother, Eric Beasley of Mitchell; one stepsister, Felicia Perrill of Mitchell; one stepbrother, Scott Banks of Fayetteville; paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Noble Beasley of Mitchell; and step grandmother, Gretchen Cooper of Bedford. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Roland and Martha Tanksley.

He was employed by Preferred Technologies in Mitchell and was a member of American Bikers Aimed Toward Education. Stafford - Dwight D. Stafford of Bedford died Saturday, November 15, 1997, at his residence. Born in Monroe County on April 12, 1937, he was the son of Claude and Pearl (Flynn) Stafford. He married Kaye Turpen, and she died in 1996.

Surviving are one daughter, Deborah K. Terrell of Bedford; one brother, Wayne Stafford of Bedford; three sisters, Naomi Pace and Kathleen Smith, both of Bedford, and Linda Murphy of Columbus; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife and one sister, Roberta Norman.

A 1955 graduate of Needmore High School, he retired from RCA and was a part-time bus driver for North Lawrence Community Schools. He was a a member of Judah Church of Christ and Masonic Lodge 14.

Hill - Murray Terhune Hill of Indianapolis died Thursday, November 13, 1997, in Indianapolis. Born December 14, 1911, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Leet and Maude Anna (Terhune) Hill. He married Violet Henderson on August 13, 1940, and she survives.

Also surviving are two daughters: Linda King and Catherine Petty, both of Indianapolis; seven grandchildren; one sister, Hagar Anderson of Avon, IN; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by five sisters and three brothers.

He was a welder by trade, worked for Wabco for thirty years, and was formerly owner of Al's Sandwich Shop on J Street in Bedford. He was a member of Masonic Lodge #669 Indianapolis and a member of the Steelworkers Union.

Fortner - Roger Darrel Fortner of Bedford died Monday, November 10, 1997, at Bedford Regional Medical Center. The son of Ralph and Mabel Fay (Turpen) Fortner, he was born in Lawrence County on July 16, 1936. He married Barbara Jean Voorhies on June 10, 1956, and she survives.

Other survivors are his mother; two daughters: June Ellen Fortner McPherson and Theresa Rose Fortner Allen; one son, Randal Darrel Fortner; one sister, Dottie Denny; five grandchildren; and one great grandson. He was preceded in death by his father, Ralph Fortner.

A graduate of Shawswick High School, he worked in maintenance at Fairfield Glade Resort in TN, White Castle Plant in Orleans, Camp Atterbury, and the Naval Surface Warfare Center at Crane. He also worked with the Neweddie Plumbing & Heating Co., and Phil Conners Construction in Seymour, Westinghouse in Bloomington, and was a self-employed contractor. He was a member of Leatherwood Christian Church where he was a former Sunday school superintendent.

Hudson - Gregory W. Hudson of Bedford died Monday, November 10, 1997, at M.D. Anderson Hospital in Houston, TX. The son of Donald W. Hudson and Regina (Bowie) McIntyre, he was born in Lawrence County on October 5, 1971.

Survivors include his father, Donald W. Hudson of Bedford; his mother and stepfather, Regina and Gary McIntyre of Bedford: one sister, Beth Hudson of Chicago, IL; one stepbrother, Jeff McIntyre of Bloomington; and one stepsister, Jaime McIntyre of Bloomington.

A 1989 graduate of Bedford North Lawrence High School and 1993 graduate of Purdue University with a degree in mechanical engineering, he was a process engineer for General Electric in Bloomington. He was a member of Dive Christian Church.

Shirley - Vivian Shirley of Bedford died Monday, November 10, 1997, in Bedford. Born January 10, 1915, in Martin County, she was the daughter of Virgil and Maudie (Fields) Cecil. She married Calvin "Bud" Shirley on April 21, 1934, and he died July 24, 1997.

Surviving are three sons: Nelson Shirley and Thomas Shirley, both of Bedford and Larry Shirley of Norman, IN; three daughters: Sue Dorsett, Annetta Short and Wanda Dalton, all of Bedford; one sister, Kathleen Rosenbaum of Bedford; fourteen grandchildren; and eighteen great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Lloyd Arlin Cecil.

She was a homemaker and a member of White River Baptist Church.

Smith - Edna Smith of Bedford died Monday, November 10, 1997, at her residence. Born August 13, 1915, in New Lebanon, she was the daughter of William Clone and Viola May (Walls) East. She married Lewis H. Smith on May 14, 1932, and he died in 1986.

Surviving are two daughters: Norma Louise Armstrong of Bedford and Wanda Maxie Lunan of Marion, TX; two brothers: Edward East and Dossie East, both of Michigan; one sister, Dessie Chappel of Michigan; five grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren; and four great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Barbara Ratkos, and one granddaughter.

She was a homemaker and a former employee of Crane & Burroughs in Plymouth, MI. She was a member of Faith Mission Church.

Brashear - Edna E. Brashear of Bedford died Saturday, November 8, 1997, at her residence. Born in Hart County, KY, on February 3, 1926, she was the daughter of Willie and Loney (Wilcoxen) Redford. She was formerly married to Leo Brashear, and he survives.

Surviving also are four daughters: Shirley Pace and Marsha Brown, both of Bedford, Rita Moore of Columbia TN, and Helen Hughes of Richmond Heights, OH; two sons: Johnny Brashear and Dennis Brashear, both of Bedford; two stepsons: Thomas Brashear of Bedford and Paul Brashear of Radcliffe, KY; three sisters: Mattie Thornton and Maryetta Waller, both of Bedford and Alberta Rice of Campbellsville, KY: one brother, Thomas Brown of Bedford: sixteen grandchildren; eight step grandchildren: seven great grandchildren and ten step great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers: Willie Robert and William Winford Brown.

She retired from General Motors Powertrain and was a member of Second Baptist Church of Bedford, United Auto Workers Local 440. She also bowled on several local leagues.

Mitchell - Florence Mitchell of Avoca died Saturday, November 8, 1997, at Hospitality House in Bedford. Born in Springville on January 29, 1906, she was the daughter of Sherman and Florence (Gilliland) Holmes. She married Ermal Mitchell on September 7, 1924, and he died in 1980.

Surviving are her caregiver Cecilia Rankin of Bedford; one sister, Marie Byers; six grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; and one great great granddaughter. She was preceded in death by one son, Kenneth Dale Mitchell; one daughter, Norma Perry; four brothers: Leo, Fred, Max, and Harvey Holmes; three sisters: Jennie Smiley, Maggie Houpt, and Nettie Flaharty; and one grandson.

She was a homemaker and a clerk at J.C. Penney, Aldens and Goodman Jester. She was a member of Avoca Baptist Church, and was a Sunday School teacher for 40 years. She was also a member of Avoca Grandmothers Club.

Grissom - Richard Grissom of Mitchell died Friday, November 7, 1997, at Bedford Regional Medical Center. The son of William Milton and Violet Pearl (Ryburn) Grissom, he was born on July 3, 1931, in Lawrence County. He married Janelle Mundy on December 4, 1982, and she survives.

Surviving with the wife are three sons: Tim Grissom, Tovey Grissom, and Travis Grissom, all of Mitchell; three step-sons: Nathan Jenkins and Shane Daughrity, both of Mitchell, and Shawn Daughrity of Fort Myers, FL; one step-daughter, Nelsa King of Mitchell: two sisters: Martha Atchason of Bedford and Vilena Leger of Salem; fourteen grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by seven brothers and two sisters.

The owner of Grissom Auction, he had been employed at Carpenter Body Works and retired from Ford Electronics in 1996. He was a 1951 graduate of Huron High School and was a member of Sons of American Legion and Cecil C. Martin American Legion Post 250.

A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Sunday, November 16th, at Chastain Funeral Home with Pastor Kay Pruett officiating. Burial will be in Bryantsville Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home following the memorial service.

Root - Edna S. Root of Bedford died Friday, November 7, 1997, at Bedford Nursing Home. The daughter of William and Lucy (Root) Hensley, she was born in Clay County, KY, on January 4, 1904. She married Walter Smith, who died in 1958. She then married George S. Root, who died in 1978.

Surviving are two step-daughters, Edith Johnson of St. Louis, MO, and Jewell Shockley of Bedford; three step-sons: Merlin Root and Paul Root, both of Needmore, and Bob Root of Mississippi; her caregiver, Becky Miller of Bedford; one sister, Lula Harries of Manchester, KY; several step-grandchildren; several step great grandchildren and step great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three step-sons: Cletus Root, Ray Root, and Russell Root; four sisters: Sophia Gregory, Nell Reynolds; Claudie Root, and Dollie Hensley; three brothers: Dewey Hensley, Frank Hensley, and Henry Hensley: and four grandchildren.

She was a member of the Baptist Church of Barboursville, KY, and was the former owner of Smith's Grocery.
