02/28/05 Payton - Mary Jane Payton of Orleans, IN, died Monday, February 28, 2005, at Mitchell Manor Living and Rehabilitation Center. Born November 24, 1925, in Crestwood, KY, she was the daughter of B. F. and Mary June (Gayle) Doty. She married George L. Payton on January 2, 1947, and he died on May 7, 1976. 02/27/05 Hammersley - Stella Rosella (Beasley) Hammersley of Williams, IN, died February 27, 2005. Born February 3, 1913, in Williams, IN, she was the daughter of George and Elizabeth Ann (Yaney) Beasley. She married Vernon Hammersley on November 11, 1933, and he died June 8, 1976. She later married Elmer Brock, and he died October 24, 1990. Surviving are one son, Vernon "Larry" Hammersley and his wife, Sue, of Springville, IN; two grandchildren: Eric Hammersley and his wife, Sandy, of Bedford, IN, and Lisa Hammersley of Springville, IN; two great-grandchildren: Chandler and Renae Hammersley, both of Bedford, IN; and one stepson, John Hammersley of Ocala, Fla. She was preceded in death by both her husbands; one granddaughter, Tisha Hammersley; six brothers: Noah, Richard, Edgar, Byford, Noble, and Charlie Beasley; six sisters: Liza Hopper, Cora Cobb, Dovie Winter, Mary Williams, Katie Woempner and Cordia Beasley; one stepdaughter, Mary Alice Shoemaker; and one stepson, Robert Hammersley. She was the last of her family of 13. Mason - Glenda Lou (Watson) Mason of Bedford, IN, died Sunday, February 27, 2005,at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on February 18, 1940, in Bedford, IN, she was the daughter of Mable C. (Gassaway) Watson and Lewis "Sam" Watson Sr. She married Leroy Mason on August 11, 1961, and he survives. She was a homemaker. Vicars - Lillian “Tudie” Vicars of Bedford, IN, formerly of Indianapolis, died on Sunday, February 27, 2005, at Westview Manor Health Care Center. Born December 31, 1912, in Indianapolis, she was the daughter of Robert and Agnes (Tremp) Peterman. She married Frank North, and he preceded her in death. Surviving are one daughter, Anne Hunter of Worthington, OH; one step-son, Robert Vicars of Indianapolis; one sister, Idah Short of Bloomington, IN; two nephews, William Short and Michael Short, both of Bedford, IN; one niece, Marjory Starnes of Bedford, IN; several great-nieces and nephews; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband. She retired as a medical secretary and was a American Red Cross Volunteer. She was a member of the St. John’s Episcopal Church in Bedford. Graveside services will be conducted at 1:00 pm on Thursday, March 3rd at the Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis with Father Charlie Carpenter officiating. Friends may call from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Wednesday, March 2nd and from 9:00 am until 10:30 am on Thursday, March 3rd at the Day & Carter Mortuary. 02/26/05 Pierce - Edith Rose Bird Pierce of Bedford, IN, died Saturday, February 26, 2005, at the Westview Manor Health Care Center. Born May 31, 1925, in West Baden, IN, she was the daughter of Heber and Oma (Brown) Bird. She married Ralph Brosmer in 1945, and he was killed that same year in an accident at work. She married Paul Barnes, and he preceded her in death. Surviving are one brother, Donald Bird and his wife, Jean, of French Lick, IN; four children: Monta Brosmer of Mountain Home, ID, Paula Wigley of Bedford, IN, Mark Barnes of Dallas, TX, and Gregory Barnes of Garland, TX; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Ralph Brosmer and Paul Barnes; one son, Kevin Pierce; and two brothers, William Bird and Heber Bird, Jr. She was a member of the Eagles, Moose Lodge and Rebecca Lodge-Odd Fellows. Memorial services will be at 1:00 pm on Friday, March 4th, at the Day & Carter Mortuary with Reno Bates officiating. 02/25/05 Dixon - Robert M. Dixon of Bedford, IN, died Friday, February 25, 2005, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born February 6, 1928, in West Baden, IN, he was the son of Marvin C. and Ruby (Leffler) Dixon. He married Joanna S. Cox on May 31, 1946, and she preceded him in death. Surviving are one son, John Dixon and his wife, Darla, of Bedford, IN; two daughters, Susanne Denny and her husband, Mike, of Easley, SC, and Janie Boenig and her husband, Chuck, of Gulf Shores, AL; five grandchildren: Melissa Rodriguez, Michael Denny, Jackie Boenig, Shera and Ryan Dixon; two great-grandchildren, Alaina and Anthony Rodriguez; three sisters-in-law: Irene Wood of Cicero, IN, Ruth Alice Pogue of Florida and Mid Parkhurst of Carmel, IN; seven nieces and nephews: Marsha Fuson, Larry Cox, Bob Wood, Jan Wood, Joan Watson, Tom Dixon and Cindy McHale. He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Joanna S. Dixon, and one brother, Jack L. Dixon. He was the owner/operator of D & M Cleaners until he retired in 1987. He had attended Grace Methodist Church and was a member and past president of the Club 55 Bowling League. He was a past member of the Bedford Lions Club, Hoosier Hills Ham Club, Bedford Masonic Lodge, Hoosier Hills RC Flying Club and a computer enthusiast. Friends may call from 4:00-8:00 pm on Tuesday at the Day & Carter Mortuary. Harrison - Vivian V. Harrison of Bedford, IN, died Friday, February 25, 2005, at her residence. Born October 27, 1921, in Bedford, IN, she was the daughter of Dee and Stella (Brown) Goen. She married William Harrison on May 26, 1938, and he died in 1978. Surviving are three daughters: Marie Harrison and Carolyn Broughton and her husband, Frankie, all of Bedford, IN, and Patty Moore and her husband, Keith, of Martinsville, IN; two sons, William (Bill) and his wife, Diane, and Freddie Harrison and his wife, Carolena, all of Bedford, IN; one sister, Mildred Fry of Bedford, IN; twelve grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; twenty-three great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; one daughter, Betty White Wade; one son, Larry E. Harrison; and two sisters, Charlotte Lewis and Violet Sargent; one half-sister, Zora Kimbrel; and two brothers, Rusaw Goen and Pete Jones. Wood of Bedford, IN, died Friday, February 25, 2005, at the Bedford Regional Medical Center. Born May 24, 1915, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Arthur and Pearl (Eagens) Quackenbush. She married Howard T. Wood on December 23, 1934, and he died in May of 1975. Surviving are one daughter, Carol Stultz and her husband, Steve, of Bedford, IN; three grandchildren: Michael Stultz, Courtney Sullivan and Patrick Stultz, all of Bedford, IN; one great-granddaughter, Emma Sullivan of Bedford, IN, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; four brothers: Orin, Ariel, Carl and Doyle Quackenbush; and two sisters, Cora Reuter and Beulah Walker. She was an employee of M. Fine & Sons, K-Mart and S.S. Kresge’s Store in Bedford. She was a member of the Hillcrest Christian Church in Bedford and the Order of the Eastern Star in Mitchell. Born June 6, 1914, in New York, she was the daughter of Edward E. and Lena Pauline (Jensen) Zipf. She married Clinton C. Daniels and he died in 1978. Surviving are include one sister, Lillian Leahy and her husband, John, of Bedford, IN; one nephew, John E. Leahy and his wife, Phyllis. of Carmel, IN; one niece, Paula Ann Harris and her husband, William M., of Laguna Niguel, CA; two great nephews, Jake Reasoner of Carmel, IN, and Eric Pearson and his wife, Eryn of Seattle, WA; six great nieces, Jennifer Reasoner and her husband, Thomas, of Carmel, IN, Kristen Leahy of Venus, CA, Nicole Harris of Brighten, MA, Morgan M. Harris, Andraya Harris and Sawyer Harris all of Laguna Niguel, CA, and several cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband and one brother, Richard Zipf. She was a trust officer for a New York bank and a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in New York. She attended the St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Bedford. Born on October 9, 1930, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of Joseph V. and Maude E. (Ooley) Glasgow. He married Martha Mae Neely on December 20, 1948, and she survives. He was a crafted metal spinner, owning Gold Star Metal Spinning in Bedford for several years. He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Bedford. Hurst - Lena E. Hurst of Orleans, IN, died Thursday, February 24, 2005, at Paoli Health and Living Community. One of triplet girls born on May 2, 1914, in Washington County, IN, she was the daughter of Willis C. and Rose (Wheeler) Lawyer. She married Clifford Eugene Hurst October 17, 1941, and he died February 11, 1975. She was a member of Mt. Carmel Christian Church. Woodard - Anna Pearl Woodard of Bedford, IN, died Thursday, February 24, 2005, at StoneBridge Health Campus, where she resided. Born March 3, 1917, in Martin Co., IN, she was the daughter of William Thomas and Malinda Jane (Davis) Hardwick. She married Fred Woodard in 1969, and he died in 1999. Surviving are three sons: Jerry Hardwick of Bedford, IN, Robert Hardwick of Colorado, and Tom Hardwick of Florida; one daughter, Darcus Charles of Indianapolis; one step-son, Ted Woodard of Indianapolis; twelve grandchildren, and nineteen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; one daughter, Ginger Packwood; five brothers; five sisters; one grandson, Earl Wayne Charles; and one step-daughter, Reba Smith. She was a homemaker. Arrangements are under the direction of the Day & Carter Mortuary. 02/23/05 Greene - James Maurice Greene of Mitchell, IN, died Wednesday, February 23, 2005, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Louisville, KY. Born on December 20, 1929, in Indianapolis, IN, he was the son of Elmer M. and Cleo Greene. He married Dorothy King on June 28, 1949, and she died on February 10, 2003. Surviving are one daughter, Rita King Bundy of Mitchell, IN; one half-brother, Randall Greene of Indianapolis; three half-sisters: Debbie and Susan Greene, both of Indianapolis, and Karen Logsdon of Pendleton, IN; two grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife. He was a retired bricklayer, a U.S. Army veteran of W.W. II and a member of the Cecil C. Martin American Legion Post 250 in Mitchell. Hawkins - Alyce LaVerne Hawkins of Bedford, IN, died Wednesday, February 23, 2005, at Hospitality House of Bedford. Born January 28, 1918, in Lafayette, IN, she was the daughter of Mason H. and Mary (Campbell) Richardson. She married Clarence B. Hawkins on November 28, 1937, and he died in 1959. She was a registered nurse and retired from Central Foundry after 25 years of service. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Bedford. 02/22/05 Gratzer - Mickey Isom Gratzer of Bedford, IN, died Tuesday, February 22, 2005, at StoneBridge Health Campus. Born July 18, 1918, in French Lick, IN, she was the daughter of William and Goldie (Breedlove) Jenkins. She married Ralph H. Isom in 1936. She later married Robert J. Gratzer, and he died in December 2004. She retired from General Motors in 1982 and was a member of U.A.W. Local No. 440. She started her second career as a caregiver to homebound patients. She retired as a caregiver at the age of 79. 02/21/05 Flinn - Geneva L. Flinn, formerly of Bedford, IN, died Monday, February 21, 2005, at her residence at the Hospitality House in Bloomington. Born August 8, 1912, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Fred and Ortance (Kern) Cole. She married Arthur Flinn on December 23, 1934, and he died on November 1, 1998. Surviving are one daughter, Judy Caswell and her husband, Jerry, of Bloomington, IN. She was preceded in death by her husband; one grandson, Trent; two brothers, Fred and Wilbur Cole; four sisters: Pauline Speer, Naomi Bolton, Lois Bartley and Roberta Canada. Allen, 78, of Bedford, died at 7:40 pm on Sunday, February 20, 2005, at the Stonebridge Health Campus in Bedford. Born January 3, 1927, in Greene County, IN, she was the daughter of Howard and Alma (Fines) Johnson. She married Lawrence Raymond Allen on January 19, 1944, and he survives. Surviving with her husband are two sons, John Allen and his wife, Sharron, of Bedford, IN, and Mike Allen and his wife, Susie, of Oolitic, IN; four grandchildren: Kelly McClure, Melissa Levine, Heather Speer and David Tatro; six great grandchildren: Curtis McClure, Allison Levine, Ashley Tatro, Shelby Tatro, Colman Speer and Tiauna Speer; six sisters: Kay Milligan and Carolyn Middleton both of Maryland, Patricia Allen and Brenda Johnson, both of Bedford, IN, Judith Nickols of Oklahoma, and Deborah Knoll of Indianapolis; two brothers, Gilbert Johnson of Mitchell, IN, and James E. Arrangements are under the direction of the Day & Carter Mortuary. 02/19/05 Grimes - Benjamin Harrison Grimes of Mitchell, IN, died Saturday, February 19, 2005, at his residence. Born July 28, 1931, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of Ben and Rosa (Nickless) Grimes. He married Norma (Day) Grimes March 27, 1948, and she survives. He was a carpenter in the Lawrence County area and a millwright, working on large projects all over Indiana, as well as home building. He was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, a charter member of the Oolitic Masonic Lodge #750, and the Scottish Rites of Indianapolis. Kern - Jessie Frances Kern of Bedford (Dive Community), IN, died Saturday, February 19, 2005. at the White River Lodge. Born on April 16, 1910, in Bedford, IN, she was the daughter of James B. and Mary B. (Bluff) Jacobs. She married Robert Edward Kern in 1932, and he died December 7, 1982. Mooney - Joshua Ray Mooney of Bedford died Saturday, February 19, 2005, at the home of his mother. Born December 23, 1979, in Bedford, IN, was the son of Deborah K. DeLaney. Stewart - Larry M. Stewart of Bedford, IN (Needmore community), died Saturday, February 19, 2005, at his residence. Born March 3, 1938, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of Delbert and Bernice (Watson) Stewart. He married Judith Judah on August 31, 1958, and she survives. Surviving with his wife is one daughter, Linda Short and her husband, Brad, of Needmore, IN; two sons, Jeff Stewart and Brad Stewart, both of Needmore, IN; five grandchildren: Kristen Green and her husband, Joe, of Jeffersonville, IN, Hannah Simcoe and her husband, Denny, of Jacksonville, NC, Ashley Crenshaw and her husband, Ron, of Ft. Branch, IN, Adam and Aliza Short, both of Needmore, IN; one great-granddaughter, Kelsey Green of Jeffersonville, IN; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Betty Stultz. He was the former owner of Stone City Construction Co. in Bedford and member of the operating engineers union. He was a trustee at Indiana Laborers Training Institute and a member of Gulletts Creek Baptist Church, the Bedford Masonic Lodge #14 F & AM and Murat Shrine. (Ham) Anderson of Bedford, IN, died Friday, February 18, 2005, at the Westview Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Born February 27, 1906, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of Joseph and Elizabeth (Blackburn) Anderson. He married Ruby Mae Mitchell on May 28, 1928, and she died April 27, 1977. He later married Louise Lively and she survives. Surviving with his wife are one son, Dean Anderson and his wife, Myrtle, of Bedford, IN; one son in law, Bill Mapes, of Bedford, IN; one granddaughter, Libby Wilcox and her husband, Howard; three grandsons: Ricky Dean Anderson, Scott Mapes and his wife, Mary, and Doug Mapes and his wife, Julie; three great grandchildren: Chris Anderson and his wife, Michelle, Crystal Anderson, and Olivia Wilcox; one great-great granddaughter, Lauryn Michelle Anderson; two step-sons, Ed Wires and his wife, Jean, of Bedford, IN, and James Wires and his wife, Juanita, of Mitchell, IN; one step-granddaughter, Jamie Mosier; two step-grandsons, Brandon and Bradley Wires; one step-great-grandson, Jason Floyd; seven nieces: Ilene Houpt, Irene Ray, Norma Anderson, Corine Deckard, Margie Bodtker Marilyn Shull, Kathalene Garner; and one nephew, Bill Anderson. He was preceded in death by his first wife; one daughter, Rhea Dawn Mapes in September 1984; two brothers; and six sisters. He attended Needmore High School and in 2002 received the Mr. Hilltopper Award. He worked at G.M. Central Foundry Division for thirteen years and retired from Bruce Tinsley Clothing. He was a longtime member of the Avoca Baptist Church. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 22nd, at Day & Carter Mortuary with Pastors Kyle Witmer and Bob Kirkman officiating. (Bart) Grabow of Indianapolis, formerly of Bedford, IN, died February 16, 2005. Born on January 1, 1928, in Big Bay, MI, he was the son of Rudolph and Edna C. Grabow. He married Polly Cochran, and she survives. A 1945 graduate of Bedford High School with the class of 1945 and of Indiana University where he received his bachelor of science degree in marketing in 1948. . He was a member of Third Church of Christ Scientist, Indianapolis and The First Church of Christ Scientist, Boston. He was a former vice president in corporate communications at PSI Energy, which he joined in 1962. He left PSI Energy in 1985 to form his own public relations consulting firm in Indianapolis. Previous to that, he was a reporter and business editor at The Indianapolis News, from 1955 to 1959 and a reporter and columnist at The Bedford Daily Times-Mail, from 1950 to 1954. He also served as promotion director of Glendale Center 1959 to 1960. He was past president of both the Hoosier Chapter, Public Relations Society of America, and the Indianapolis Public Relations Society. Born December 7, 1935, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Dudley and Avis (Taylor) Wykoff. She married Charles Robbins on November 30, 1953, in Bedford, IN, and he died in 1997. She was a homemaker; and she had served as a poll worker in Lawrence County. She had served as a Red Cross volunteer and as a former pink lady at Dunn Memorial Hospital. He was a driver with Greyhound Bus Co., had worked at Extruded Alloys Inc. in Bedford, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served with the invasion forces in Europe during World War II.. She married Edmond Holland on September 26, 1936, and he died in 1985. Born September 12, 1925, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Jack and Elizabeth (Mahoney) O'Brien. She married Harold McMullen on September 5, 1953. A 1943 graduate of Bedford High School, she had been employed as a bookkeeper for Bedford Water Works and Public Service Indiana and later as a clerk at O'Brien's Liquor Store of Bedford, retiring in 1982. She was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church of Bedford. 02/08/05 Brand - William Rollin "Bill" Brand of Bedford, IN, passed away on February 8. Born on January 1, 1966, in Bloomington, IN, he was the son of William and Janis (Hoggatt) Brand, and he had lived in Bloomington most of his life. He married Stacy Best, and she survives. He was graduated from Indiana University in 1999, with a degree in Kinesiology; held an EMT certificate; and was studying nursing at IVY Tech in Bloomington. He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Bedford, was formerly a member of St. John's Catholic Church in Ellettsville, and had attended St. Charles Catholic School in Bloomington. Norton - Billy Joe Norton of Bedford, IN, died Tuesday, February 8, 2005, at his residence. Born October 25, 1948, in Columbus, IN, he was the son of William Thomas and Rissie Pearl (Bryant) Norton. He married Helen Marie Fields on November 24, 1966, in Columbus, IN, and she survives. He graduated from Edinburgh High School with the class of 1966, and he was currently employed at Visteon in Bedford as a bottle line assembler. She first married Carl Cooper and he died in 1999. She next married Raymond "Spike" Wood and he also preceded her in death. She was retired from Trav-ler Radio Corp., formerly of Orleans.
