Bloomington – James C. Head, 54, of Bloomington, died at 5:20 pm on Sunday, November 30, 2003 at Fontainbleu Nursing Home in Bloomington.

Born August 21, 1949 in Louisville, KY, he was the son of Preston Head and Kathleen (Cazee) England. He was a carpenter and of the Catholic faith.

Survivors include two sons, Brian Head of Bedford and Jerry Head of Florida; his mother, Kathleen England of Bedford; one sister, Prestina Mynatt of Springville; three daughters, Stephanie and Teresea Head both of Bedford and Yolanda Head of Salem and one brother, Rick Head of Scottsburg.

Funeral Information

Betty H. Robbins

July 17, 1928 - November 29, 2003

A very loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother

Bedford-Betty H. Robbins, 75, of Breckenridge Road, Bedford, passed away suddenly at 8:03 A.M. Saturday, November 29th at Bloomington Hospital.

Born on July 17, 1928 in Lawrence County, IN she was the daughter of John DePierre and Catherine (Dillman) DePierre. Mrs. Robbins was a homemaker and co-owner of Bedford Limestone Suppliers, Inc. She was a member of the Fayetteville Baptist Church and a lifetime member of Omega Nu Tau Epsilon Chapter. She married Robert E. Robbins on May 21, 1949 and he passed away on May 17, 2002.

A very loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother she is survived by: three sons: Daniel J. Robbins and his wife, Carol J.; Dale A. Robbins and his wife, Alice L. and Richard D. Robbins and his wife, Janice N. all of Bedford, IN; one daughter: Denise A. Brock and her husband, Scott D. of Bedford, IN; seven grandchildren: Angela M. Robbins Sutton, Daniel C. Robbins, Jeremy D. Robbins, Lorie M. Emmons, Jamie L. Robbins, Molly K. Brock and Kyle R. Robbins; three great grandchildren: Kathryn D.; Dakoda Scott and Ellie Jo; two brothers: John DePierre and Donnie DePierre both of Colorado; two sisters: Joan Wray of Bedford, IN and Delena Turner of TN. Mrs. Robbins was preceded in death by her parents; husband and one brother: Stephen DePierre.

Pearl V. Scales

Huron – Pearl V. Scales of Huron, IN, formerly of Wheatland, IN died at 4:35 am on Thursday, November 27, 2003 at the Bloomington Hospital in Bloomington.

Born in Bristol, Tennessee, she was the daughter of James and Amanda Louise (Perkins) Cook. She first married Henry Hubry. She later married Ralph E. Scales in 1944 and he died in November 1979. She was a homemaker and a member of the Hillcrest Christian Church/Bryantsville Church of Christ.

Survivors include one daughter, Katy Abel of Huron, IN, one granddaughter, Nicole McNamara and one great grandson, Seamus McNamara both of Massachusetts; one great nephew, David Wampler and his wife, Sandra of Bedford; several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, one daughter, Fronia Hubry; six sisters, Rose Wampler, Kathleen Davis-Evans, Margaret Fisher-Spruge, Fronia Coleman-Watkins, Callie Cook and Lillie Cook; six brothers, Robert S. Cook, Mack H. Cook, Fred L. Cook, Elbert Cook and two in infancy. She was the last of thirteen children.

Springville – Lushen E. Kidd, 67, of 1775 Popcorn Road, Springville, died on Wednesday, November 26, 2003 at his residence.

Born March 30, 1936 in Kentucky, he was the son of Walter and Lizzie (Jones) Kidd. He married Donna Beals on November 8, 1974 and she survives. He retired from Indiana Limestone Co. in Oolitic and was a member of the Grace Baptist Church of Springville.

Surviving with his wife, Donna are one son, Danny Kidd of Bloomington; one daughter, Janet Robinson of Bedford; three step-sons, Wendell Kidd and Troy Harris both of Spencer and Bleven Harris of English, IN; two step-daughters, Rita Atwood of English and Ava Hall of Bedford; five grandchildren, Missy Powell of Virginia, Gary Robinson of California, Allen Robinson of Bedford, Shandell and Haven Roll of Mitchell; ten step-grandchildren, Russell and Casey Atwood, Chuck Hall all of English, Troy and Carrie Harris of Spencer, Mark and Kevin North of Bloomington, Joseph, Jonathon and Elizabeth Kidd all of Spencer; six great grandchildren, Sierra, Robert, Michael and Donald Buskirk all of Virginia, Kaitlin Robinson of California, Matthew Kidd of Bloomington; four sisters, Ora, Esme, Cloe and Lilly; four brothers, Benjamin, Edgar, Hulen and Chester. He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Myra Roll, one grandson, Randy Kidd, six brothers and two sisters.

Gerald B. Baker

Springville – Gerald B. Baker, 70, of 1001 Greer Lane, Springville, IN, died at 1:45 pm on Tuesday, November 25, 2003 at Dunn Memorial Hospital following a two and one half year illness.

Born February 4, 1933 in Lawrence County, he was the son of Dolphus and Maude Lorena (Hackler) Baker. He married Marilyn Joyce Lake on November 23, 1956 and she survives. He was a certified welder and layout man for Indiana Steel and Engineering Co. retiring in 1998. He had also been employed by Indiana Limestone Co. and had taught a welding class at the Vocational School in Bedford. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Korean War and was a member of the Gillen Post #33 American Legion, Lawrence Co. Farm Bureau and Lawrence Co. Fair Board. He was a member of the Hilltop Pentecostal Church in Avoca and a 4-H leader for fifteen years.

Surviving with his wife, Marilyn, are one daughter, Sherry Lynn Baker-Rayhill of Mitchell; two sons, Mark Kevin Baker and his wife, Kim and Jon Stevin Baker and his wife, Brenda all of Springville; nine grandchildren, Crystal, Cristen, Cory, Craig and Christanna Rayhill all of Mitchell, Brett Baker, Jamie Baker-Phillips and Stacy Baker all of Springville and Stephanie Baker of Indianapolis; one great granddaughter, Lauren Cheyenne Nobles of Springville; two step-grandchildren, Ronnie Patton, Jr. and Brandi Morris; one step great granddaughter, Haley Patton; one brother, Harold Baker and his wife, Pauline of Bedford and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Bedford – Edna H. Morron, 84, of 49 Hilltopper Lane, Bedford, died at 10:46 pm on Sunday, November 23, 2003 at the Bedford Regional Medical Center.

Born February 3, 1919 in Clay County, KY, she was the daughter of General and Myrtle (Brown) Hale. She married Elza Morron on April 7, 1938 and he died September 29, 1974. She was a retired Superintendent in halls of residence at Indiana University in Bloomington and a member of Hilltop Pentecostal Church in Avoca.

Survivors include two daughters, Carolyn Deckard and her husband James and Linda Crulo and her husband Larry all of Bedford; one son, Phillip Morron and his wife, Deborah of Bedford; eight granddaughters, Debra Deckard, Sherry Porter, Pammy Ryan, Lisa Sego, Kelly Conolty, Stephanie Morron all of Bedford and Tammy Rumell of Martinsville and Tonya Williams of Mitchell; one grandson, Mark Morron of Bedford; two sisters, Margie Taylor and Lois Sims Page both of Indianapolis; two brothers, General Hale, Jr. of Indianapolis and Dennis C. Hale of Harrodsburg; sixteen great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son and one grandson in infancy; four sisters, Joea Porter, Eula Ryan, Marie Manion, and Eunice in infancy; two brothers, Eugene C. Hale and Carl Hale.

Leesville – George Washington Johnson, 85, of Leesville, died at 1:51 am on Thursday, November 20, 2003 at his residence.

Born September 23, 1918 in Cow Creek, KY, he was the son of Granville Pearle and Fairendia (Spencer) Johnson. He was married to Eliza Bea Noble for sixty-five years and she survives. George was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was a retired carpenter and farmer. He was a founding member and former chairman of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Leesville.

Springville – Matthew James “Jamie” Manion, 31, of 1837 State Road 54 West, Springville, IN, died November 18, 2003 at his residence.

Born July 5, 1972 in Greene County, he was the son of Mike and Brenda (Groomer) Manion. He was employed at Visteon in Bedford. He graduated from BNL in 1990 and attended Vincennes University where he studied law enforcement. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and of the Pentecostal faith.

Survivors include his father, Mike Manion of Bedford; his mother and step-father, Brenda and Philip Craig of Bedford; two brothers, Mark Manion and his wife, Kris, of Vincennes and Michael Manion of Bedford; one sister, Marsha Nelson and her husband, Lee, of Avoca; three half-brothers, Eric Manion, Michael Manion, II and Seth Manion all of Owensburg; maternal grandfather, Everett Groomer of Bloomfield; three nieces, Brittany, Mercedes and Brianna Manion all of Avoca; two nephews, Brandon and Brady Manion both of Avoca. Bedford-Fredrick H. (Red) Krodel, 69, of Ludlow Drive, Bedford and formerly of Loogootee, IN, passed away at 1:27 A.M. Saturday, November 15, 2003 at Bloomington Hospital.

Born on August 18, 1934, he was the son of Henry J. Krodel and Lela Floe (Burress). He was retired from Indiana Limestone and attended the Faith Mission Church. He married Barbara (Taylor) Krodel on October 22, 1976 and she survives.

Surviving in addition to his wife Barbara, of Bedford is his previous wife: LaVonda Terrell of Clute, TX and their children: Marilyn (Krodel) Prescott and her husband, Robert of Richwood, TX; Anthony Krodel of Lake Jackson, TX and Joseph Krodel of Shoals; four step children: Connie Roll; Bonnie Hirtz and her husband, John; Reva Albertson all of Bedford and Jackie Taylor of Michigan; nine grandchildren: Misty, Cody, Michael, Aaron, Sean, Danny, Chasity, Amanda and Luke; six step-grandchildren: Nathan, Crystal, Shannon, Melanie, Kristin and Jacklyn and thirteen great grandchildren. 2 brothers: Roger Krodel and his wife, Sally of Redding, CA and James Krodel of Denver, CO; and 1 sister: Imogene Thompson and her husband, Brayton of Edinburgh, IN. and several nieces and nephews Preceded in death by his parents; 1 step-grandson; sister-in-law: Charlene Krodel and son-in-law: Wendell Roll.

He was born November 5, 1953 in Dayton, OH. He married Carol Covey on January 19, 1991 and she survives. He was an electrical lineman for Miller Construction Co.

Surviving with his wife, Carol are one step-daughter, Alaina Roberts at home; mother and step-father, Joyce and Jack Bitner of Ellettsville; father, Amos Creech of Stanton, KY; one sister, Diana Eads and her husband, Steve of Bloomington; one brother, Rex Vint of Bloomington; nieces, nephews and three step-brothers.

Betty Lou Fortney

Bedford – Betty Lou Fortney, 82, of Bedford, died at 6:45 am on Wednesday, November 12, 2003 at Westview Manor in Bedford.

Born September 21, 1921 in Kirksville, MO; the daughter of: Thomas D. and Ola (Baldridge) Johnson. Mrs. Fortney lived in Maxell, Iowa as a child and moved to Kirksville in 1934. On March 17, 1940 she married Roy L. Fortney and he preceded her in death on March 21, 1999. Mrs. Fortney was the owner of Mode O’ Day Dress Shop from 1957 to 1984. A member of Chapter 4 White Shrine, she was a Worthy Priestess in 1964; a member of the Order of the Eastern Star #184 where she was a Worthy Matron in 1968 and served as District Deputy Grand Matron from 1977 to 1978 and held the office of Marshall for fourteen years. She was the President of El Kadir Shrine Jewels in 1986 and a member of First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Janet Jackson and her husband, Jerry of Bedford; one daughter-in-law: Joyce Fortney of Harrisonville, MO; grandchildren, Jeff Jackson of Carmel, IN, Julie Thomas of Indianapolis, Jason Jackson of Bloomington, Lisa (Fortney) Allen of New London, MO, Mariann Myres and Laura Shirley both of Lees Summit, MO; eight great grandchildren; one brother, Thomas Lee (Sonny) Johnson of Baxter, Iowa and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband and one son: Larry L. Fortney who died April 23, 2003.

Madison – Kenneth (Pat) Leroy Bailey, 82, a resident of the Madison State Hospital, formerly of Bedford, died at 7:20 am on Tuesday, November 11, 2003 in Madison, IN.

Born October 23, 1921 in Heltonville, IN, he was the son of Lloyd Tolbert and Edith (Kindred) Bailey. He was a graduate of Heltonville High School. He was formerly employed at Central Foundry Div. of GM in Bedford and was a member of Mundell Christian Church.

Survivors include two brothers, Leonard and Robert Bailey both of Bedford; two sisters, Jeanette Norman and her husband, Morris and Janice Baker and her husband, Billy Don all of Bedford; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Fred and Wilmer Bailey and two sisters, Geneva Taylor and Juanita Terrell.

Bedford – Mary Alice McCart, 88, a resident of Hospitality House, formerly of 411 ‘R’ Street, Bedford went home to glory land last night.

Born August 19, 1915 in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Burt and Ella (Hubbard) Wright. She married Lowell McCart on March 7, 1937 and he passed away in 2000. She was a homemaker and beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was a member of the Tunnelton United Methodist Church and president of the Oolitic T.O.P.S. Club for twenty-five years.

Survivors include one son, Larry McCart and his wife, Judith of Bedford; two granddaughters, Tracy Lee and her husband, David and Terri Kimbley and her husband, Steve, all of Bedford; two grandsons, Scott McCart and his wife, Shalon of Greenwood and David McCart and his wife, Meleah of Bedford; four great grandchildren, Patrick and Andrea Lee of Bedford and Rebekah and Reece McCart of Greenwood; one sister, Ina Wright of Bedford; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four brothers, William, Robert, Marvin and Max (in infancy); three sisters, Bonnie Kruchten, Alta Mae Hickman and Gretel (in infancy).

Indianapolis – Violet May Hill, 85, of 348 South Edgehill, Indianapolis, IN died on Thursday, November 6, 2003 at her residence.

Born March 22, 1918 in Bedford, IN, she was the daughter of Leslie A. and Rinda F. (Bowman) Henderson. She married Murray T. Hill on August 13, 1940 and he died November 13, 1997. She was a homemaker and operated Al’s Sandwich Shop in Bedford along with her husband in the 1940’s. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and was baptized in the Church of God in Bedford.

Survivors include two daughters, Catherine Petty and Linda King both of Indianapolis; seven grandchildren, Susan Petty, Candace Petty, Cindy Vankempen, Lora Vankempen, Mark Vankempen, Richard Vankempen and Skylar King. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three sisters, Catherine Sherrill, Rowena Smith and Belva Roberts and one brother, Leslie Henderson, Jr.

Born February 1, 1920 in Schuyler, Nebraska, she was the daughter of Charles and Sophia (Otradovsky) Mastny. She married Robert B. Conrad on March 28, 1946 and he died February 22, 1981. She was a secretary, homemaker and a member of the Episcopal faith.

Survivors include one daughter, Jane Stutes and her husband, Paul of Bedford; one son, Charles Conrad of Virginia Beach, VA; two grandchildren, Julie Stutes of Bedford and Matthew Conrad of Virginia Beach, VA. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and two brothers, Charles and Emerson Mastny.

Born May 30, 1935 in Montana, he was the son of George and Myrtle (Knight) Hallett. He graduated from Rocky Mountain College in 1961 in Billings, Montana with a degree in industrial arts. He was a teacher for many years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving during the Korean War and was involved in the evacuation of Formosa. He was discharged in 1956. He was a member of the Eagles Lodge #2442 of Shoals, Moose Lodge and the American Legion. His hobbies were woodworking and fishing.

Survivors include five sons, Ted and Lee Hallett both of Arizona, Lynn and Paul Hallett both of Iowa and Frank Hallett, Jr. of Shoals; one sister, Mary Smith of Montana, one brother, Lloyd Hallett of Texas; eighteen grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Robert Hallett and one son, David Hallett.

Funeral Information

Graveside services will be conducted at 2:00 pm on Friday, November 7th at Spring Hill Cemetery in Shoals with Mark Otero officiating. Friends may call from 10:00 am until 1:00 pm on Friday at the Day & Carter Mortuary.
