Jordan D. Groves

April 25, 1988 — May 11, 2008

Jordan Dean Groves, 20, of Bedford, was called home to the Lord on Sunday, May 11, 2008.

Our beloved son, brother, uncle and best friend was born on April 25, 1988, to Bobby and Diane (Parks) Groves. He was a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church where he had also attended school. He was a 2007 graduate of the Bedford North Lawrence High School. He had attended Vincennes University and was employed at Sherwin-Williams Paint Store.

Surviving with his parents are a brother, Jeff Buffington and wife Melissa of Bedford; a sister, Kristie Tanner and husband Daniel of Bedford; a nephew, Kramer Buffington of Mitchell; nieces: Kendyl and Madalyn Buffington of Bedford; and his maternal grandmother, Alta Cox of French Lick.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Dennis Parks of French Lick; and his paternal grandparents, Maggie Roper and Phil Groves of Kokomo.

Jordan loved playing sports, especially basketball in the summer, soccer in the fall and snowboarding in the winter. Jordan was a loving and caring person to all his family and friends and will leave a void that will never be filled. Our family takes comfort knowing that Jordan was confirmed in the Catholic Church and his faith will carry him into the arms of Our Father in Heaven.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday at the St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church with Father Rick Eldred officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery.

Kathleen W. Ellison

Oct. 23, 1912 — May 10, 2008

Kathleen Wright Ellison, 95, Bliss House, formerly of 1619 14th Street, Bedford, died at 5:32 a.m. Saturday at Bedford Regional Medical Center.

Born Oct. 23, 1912, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Levi and Stella (Newkirk) Wright. She married Edward Ellison on July 23, 1934, at Syracuse, and he preceded her in death on March 27, 1983.

She was a homemaker. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Bedford, Daughters of the American Revolution and Kappa Sigma.

Survivors include one daughter, Lorenda E. Voris, Bedford; one son, James W. Ellison, Bedford; eight grandchildren, Cheryl Wilkerson, Stephen R. Maddox, Christina Lugo, Caron Parke Ellison, James E. Ellison, Susan E. Maddox, Elizabeth Layton and Jennifer L. Bland; seven great-grandchildren, Matthew Maddox, Hollie Teague, Kelsi Wilkerson, Kati Wilkerson, Michael Layton, Cameron Ellison and Meredith Ellison; two great-great-grandchildren, Jasper and Corbin Maddox; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Eddie Ellison; 10 brothers and sisters, Gladys, Annie, Lambert, Emmett, Grace, Arminto, Everett, Clyde (at birth), Elsworth and Evalou. Kathleen was the youngest of her siblings.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home in Bedford with Pastor Mark McDaniel officiating. Burial will follow at Cresthaven Memory Gardens.

Donald I. Passmore

April 24, 1930 — May 10, 2008

Donald Isaac Passmore, 78, Mitchell Manor and a lifelong resident of Mitchell, died at 11:08 a.m. Saturday at Bedford Regional Medical Center.

Born April 24, 1930, in Mitchell, he was the son of James and Lavina (Tincher) Passmore. He married Betty Brown Bradshaw on Oct. 28, 1950, and she preceded him in death on Jan. 24, 1994.

He was a retired production worker from Carpenter Body Works in Mitchell. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran and a lifetime member of the American Legion Cecil C. Martin Post No. 250 in Mitchell.

Survivors include four sisters, Vickee Garrison and husband Steve of Farmland, Mary Brewer and husband Don of Mitchell, Evelyn Newport and husband Robert of Clay City, and Jean Conley and husband Howard of Loveland, Ohio; three brothers, Larry Passmore and wife Linda, Roy Passmore and wife Patricia, and Ron Passmore and wife Karen, all of Mitchell; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; two sons, George Brown and Don “Buck” Passmore; five brothers, Ralph, James, Ken, Bob, and Charles Passmore; and one sister, Lena Mae Passmore.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Haverly Chapel of Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home in Mitchell, with Brother David Conley officiating. Burial will follow in Mitchell Cemetery with military rites accorded by members of the Cecil C. Martin American Legion Post No. 250.

David G. Stroud

June 6, 1926 — May 10, 2008

David G. Stroud, 81, Mitchell, went to be with the Lord at 8:10 p.m. Saturday at the Bedford Regional Medical Center.

Born June 6, 1926, in Lawrence County (Huron area), he was the son of Jesse and Leva (Barlow) Stroud.

He retired from Carpenter Body Works in 1988 and was a member of Cornerstone Worship Center.

Survivors include his wife, Maxine (Enochs) Stroud of Mitchell; children, Paul D. Stroud and wife Kathy of Mitchell, Glen Stroud and wife Patty of Bogart, Ga., Steve Stroud and wife Mickey of Oolitic, and Tim Stroud and wife Carroll of Bloomington; one sister, Mary Powell and husband Lee of Mitchell; grandchildren, Lindsay Kidwell, Ashley Duncan, and Lance, Wesley and Shane Stroud; three step-grandchildren, Troy and Michael Knight and Lisa Kale; five great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

His parents; brothers, Arvid, Amel, Ermel, and Jesse Stroud Jr.; and sisters, Ilene Guthrie and Helen Sorrells, preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday from the Memorial Chapel of the Chastain Funeral Home in Mitchell with Pastor Rodney Reynolds officiating. Burial will be in Mitchell Cemetery.

Joyce S. Kirk

Aug. 18, 1935 — May 9, 2008

Joyce Sue Waggoner Kirk, 72, of 6615 State Road 158, surrounded by family and friends who loved her dearly, went to be with the Lord at 7:30 p.m. Friday at White River Lodge in Bedford.

Born on Aug. 18, 1935, in Loogootee, she was daughter of Charles D. and Ethel E. (Hunt) Waggoner. She graduated from Shoals High School in 1953; worked at the Shoals High School, Super Eight Motel in Bedford and retired from Crane; a member of Psi Iota, Xi Sorority and an active member of the Fayetteville Baptist Church. She married Gene R. Kirk on July 2, 1955, and he survives.

Surviving with her husband, Gene of Bedford, are one son, Justin D. Kirk and wife Marcia of Burleson, Texas; one daughter, Jean Bartley and husband Randy of Oakland City; four granddaughters, Kalee Kirk, Jenell Bartley, Heather Oldendorf, and Tasha King; one grandson, Adam Bartley; three siblings, Wesley D. (Denny) Waggoner of Shoals, Janet (Jan) Waggoner of Bloomington and Alice Smith of Redlands, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Jane Kirk King; infant great-grandson, Isiah King; infant siblings, Delbert and Mable Waggoner and sisters, Mary W. Allen and Melba Baker.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday from the Fayetteville Baptist Church with Rev. Kenny Walden and Rev. Ken Bushie officiating. Burial will follow in the Spring Hill Cemetery in Shoals.

Rev. Ralph L. Turner

Sept. 5, 1911 — May 11, 2008

Rev. Ralph L. Turner, 96, of Heltonville, died at 6 a.m. Sunday.

He was an ordained minister in the Church of God (Anderson). For many years he served as Associate Minister in churches at Bedford and Logansport, and Cleveland and Elyria, Ohio. He was employed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for seven years, by the Department of the Army for 19 years, and the Internal Revenue Service for eight years.

After his retirement in 1969 he served as Chaplain at both the Dunn Memorial Hospital and the Bedford Regional Medical Center and as a counselor in an Alcohol Anonymous Drug and Alcohol program.

Survivors include a son, Boyce E. Turner, Heltonville; a daughter, Judith A. Turner-Bussmann of Arlington, Va.; three grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday from the Elmwood Chapel of Day & Carter Mortuary with burial following in Gilgal Cemetery in Heltonville.

Gladys G. Sargent

Dec. 7, 1911 — May 10, 2008

Gladys G. Sargent, 96, of 3100 S. Shawnee Drive, Bedford, died at 10:04 a.m. Saturday at Dunn Memorial Hospital.

She taught school for a total of 36 years starting at Inman, Kentucky Ridge, Edington and Rector in Greene County, East Oolitic and then 25 years at Needmore Elementary where she retired.

She is survived by three daughters: Carolyn “Susie” Nikirk, Oolitic, Gerogeann Briscoe, Bedford, and Brenda Chambers, Bloomington; five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday from the Elmwood Chapel of Day & Carter Mortuary with Rev. Kyle Witmer officiating.

Friends may call at Day & Carter Mortuary from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, and from noon until the service on Wednesday at the mortuary.

Ruth Fender, 93

Ruth Fender, 93, of 1415 Standish Steel Road, Bedford, passed away at 9:45 p.m. Friday, May 9, 2008, at her residence.

Born on January 10, 1915, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Ellis Fender and Ophie (Mitchell) Fender. She was a hairdresser, retiring in 1979 after working over 50 years. She was a member of the National Hairdresser Association.

Surviving is a sister: Kathleen Pirtle of Bedford, IN, and her daughter, Henrietta Pirtle; several nieces and a nephew. She was preceded in death by her parents and four brothers: Clovis, Ray, Eugene and John Fender.

Graveside services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Monday, May 12th, at the Cresthaven Memory Gardens in Bedford. Friends may call on Monday, May 12th, from 11:00 a.m. until 1:45 p.m.

Betty L. Miller, 82, of 127 Edgewood Drive, Bedford, died at 12:01 p.m. on Thursday at Garden Villa in Bedford.

Born May 12, 1925, in Bedford, she was the daughter of Marshall and Carrie (Fish) Girdley. She married Dale F. “Red” Miller on February 16, 1952, and he preceded her in death on January 19, 2008.

She was a homemaker and enjoyed sports as much as her husband. She was of the Protestant faith.

Survivors include one daughter, Marilyn A. Hayes and husband Frank of Bedford; three grandchildren, Cathy A. Goodin and husband Pat, Kimberly J. Hall and husband Danny, and J.D. Hayes all of Bedford; nine great-grandchildren, Natalie Buente and husband Brian, Justin Goodin and wife Jennifer, Shannon Spires and husband Joey, Nathan Hall and wife Holly, Lauren Simpson and husband Brian, Baron Hall and wife Erica, Alex Crane, Wil Hayes, and Anna Hayes; eight great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dale; four brothers, Ralph, Paul, Kenny and Harry Girdley; and one sister, Etta Marie Stalker.

Keith McDonald

Keith McDonald, 60, of Bedford, died at 2:45 p.m. on Tuesday at Bloomington Hospital.

Born July 5, 1947, he was the son of Samuel J. and Grace I. (Pritchett) McDonald. He retired from G.M. Powertrain after 30 years. He was made an Eagle scout and was a life-time member of H.O.G. He was a veteran of the Army serving during the Viet Nam War and was a member of U.A.W. Local No, 440.

Survivors include his mother, Grace of Bedford; two sisters: Judith Meadows and Donna Woods both of Bedford; one brother, Kent McDonald and wife Sandy of Mooresville; nephews: Steve Webb and wife Michelle of Bedford and Joshua McDonald of Mooresville; a niece, Amber McDonald of Mooresville; great-nieces and nephews: Dustin, Stephanie, Timothy and Tiarra Webb and a great-great-nephew, Michael Webb.

He was preceded in death by his father; a sister, Janet Sue McDonald and a niece, DeLeta Lynn Inman.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday from the Elmwood Chapel of Day & Carter Mortuary with Rev. Charlie Scott and Rev. Mark Fugate officiating. Burial will follow in Cresthaven Memory Gardens. Military rites will be accorded at the graveside by members of Gillen Post No. 33 American Legion.

Michael James Terhune, 44, of 204026 Plaza Drive, Bedford, died at 1:05 a.m. Wednesday at the home of his mother.

He was a chef at Turtle Point Yacht & Country Club in Killen, Ala. and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.

Survivors include his mother, Patricia of Bedford; one sister, Michal Dusendang, Bedford; two sons: Michael James Terhune Jr. and Matthew Terhune both of Alabama and two grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the First Assembly of God Church in Bedford with Pastor Terry Bryant officiating.

Darrell L. Tolbert

Feb. 22, 1945 — May 5, 2008

Darrell L. Tolbert, 63, Bedford, died at 7 a.m. Monday at White River Lodge in Bedford.

He was born Feb. 22, 1945, in Lawrence County, the son of Pearl Tolbert.

He was formerly employed with Indiana Limestone and the U.S. Forestry Service. He was a member of the Heltonville Baptist Church, Fraternal Order of Police, Indiana Sheriff’s Association and the Garden Club of White River Lodge.

Survivors include his stepfather, Fred Harrell and wife Sarah of Bedford; two sons: Mark Tolbert of Bedford and Robert D. Tolbert; one daughter, Darla LaVerne Thurman; three grandchildren; and two sisters: Nina Rhoda and Connie Flynn and husband Danny, all of Bedford.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Pearl Tolbert, and a brother, Dale Harrell.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home in Bedford. Burial will be in Port Williams Cemetery.

Robert W. Short

Feb. 3, 1923 — May 4, 2008

Robert W. Short, the 85-year-old, retired attorney and former President of Bedford Federal Savings Bank, passed away at his residence on Sunday.

He was born on Feb. 3, 1923, in Bedford, to Carl M. and Jess (Williams) Short, and raised on the family farm in Springville. He graduated from Springville High School in 1940, and was President of his Class. He attended Indiana University where his education was interrupted by World War II. He served as a Navigator in The Eighth Air Force and retired as a 1st Lieutenant. He returned to continue his education and graduated from Indiana University Law School in 1951. He then practiced law in Bedford and served as City Attorney in the administrations of Ivan Brinegar and Lee Quackenbush. He was an active member of the Bedford Chamber of Commerce, and long-serving Board Member of the Bedford Boys Club. He was instrumental in the growth of the Bedford Federal Savings and Loan, and oversaw the building of its new and current bank building, where he served as President until his retirement in 1988. He continued to practice law until he suffered from failing eyesight.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Suzanne Lanz Short; son, Carl of Sarasota, Fla.; daughters: Julia of Atlanta, Ga., and Laura of West Palm Beach, Fla.; grandson, Bradley Robert of Poughquag, N.Y.; three great-grandchildren; and one sister, Martha Jane Cottingham of Miami Lakes, Fla.

Friends may visit the family at the Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home from 4-8 p.m. on Wednesday. A private family burial service will take place at a later date.

At the family’s request, contributions may be made to the Bedford Boys Club and/or the Limestone Girls Club, in memory of Robert W. Short.

Elizabeth Hatfield Hobson, 87

Elizabeth Hatfield Hobson, 87, Bedford, died at 3:50 a.m. Saturday at StoneBridge Health Campus in Bedford.

Born March 7, 1921, in Jonesville (Lee County), Va., she was the daughter of James David and Anne (Noe) Fleenor. She first married John Hatfield, and he preceded her in death in 1986. Secondly she married Harley Hobson, and he also preceded her in death.

She was a homemaker and attended the Assembly of God Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Helen Fleetwood of Bedford, and Wilma Hatfield Cheek and husband Rannel of Bedford; two granddaughters, Rhonda Hawkins and husband Richard of Avoca, and Tammy Sanders of Bedford; three great-granddaughters, Jeanetta Marie Melvin of Bedford, Erin Elizabeth Melvin of Bedford, and Devin M. Henderson and husband Jamie of Bedford; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Jeris; one stepdaughter, Pauline King; and one stepson, Kenneth.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home in Bedford. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery in Bedford.

Mildred Kendall, 83, Bedford, formerly of Paoli, died Wednesday at Bloomington Hospital of Orange County.

She was co-owner of Kendall Appliance Company in Paoli and Bedford.

Survivors include a stepson, Richard Kendall, Kansas; and three sisters, Dorothy Dailey and Hilda McCabe, both of Paoli, and Mary Chapman, Naples, Fla.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Kemple Funeral Home in Paoli with James F. Walters officiating. Burial will be in Paoli Community Cemetery.

Sharon R. Trueblood

Oct. 10, 1934 — April 30, 2008

Sharon R. (Baker) Trueblood, 73, 2 Rosewood Lane, Bedford, died at 4:13 p.m. Wednesday at Dunn Memorial Hospital in Bedford.

Born Oct. 10, 1934, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Millard Buck and Pearl Lena (Voorhies) Baker. She married Claude C. Stannard in 1950, and he preceded her in death in 1998. On June 30, 1984, in Lawrence County, she married Russell L. Trueblood and he survives.

She was a homemaker and a retired waitress. She was of the Christian faith.

Survivors include her husband, Russell L. Trueblood of Bedford; one son, Claude C. Stannard Jr. of Bedford; six grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; four brothers, Joseph M. Baker, Kenneth E. Baker, James M. Baker and Herbert L. Baker, all of Bedford; two sisters, Dorothy Stancomb of Mitchell and Reva Mundy of Bedford; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Lena; two grandchildren; three brothers; three sisters; and her parents.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home in Bedford. Burial will be at the House of Prayer Cemetery.

Ronnie ‘George’ Kemple

Nov. 26, 1934 — May 1, 2008

Ronnie “George” Kemple, 73, Mitchell, passed away at 2 a.m. Thursday at his residence.

Born Nov. 26, 1934, in Clark County, he was the son of Emmitt Eugene “Doc” Kemple and Florence Edith (Spencer) Sherman. He married Mildred Louise Mills on July 23, 1955.

He retired from Dana Corporation and was a U.S. Navy veteran. He enjoyed collecting anything pertaining to Christmas.

Surviving are his wife, Mildred “Millie” Louise Kemple, Mitchell; daughters, Donna Eugena Bell and husband Gary and Robin Jones and husband Shane all of Mitchell; sons Terry Lee Kemple and wife Roxanne, Paoli, Johnny Wayne Kemple and wife Beverly of Bedford , and Danny Kemple and girlfriend Kellie Kirkman of Mitchell; a brother, Michael Sherman of Charlestown; sisters, Sheri Sherman of Charlestown and Mari Beth Blackwell of Mitchell; 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

His parents preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in the Memorial Chapel of the Chastain Funeral Home with Pastor Dan Smetzer officiating. Burial will be in Bethel Cemetery with military honors accorded by Cecil C. Martin American Legion Post No. 250 and Marvin R. Davis Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9107.

Friends may call from 2-6 p.m. on Sunday and from 9 a.m. until the service on Monday at the funeral home.

Casketbearers will be: Eli Cook, Nathan Kemple, Amos Cook, Allen Kemple, Elvis Mattingly and Gary Porter

Earl R. Stedman

Sept. 15, 1920 — April 29, 2008

Earl Robert Stedman, 87, of 1702 Valley View Drive, Bedford, died at 6:35 p.m. Tuesday at StoneBridge Health Campus in Bedford.

Born Sept. 15, 1920, in Benton Harbor, Mich., he was the son of Clarence and Flora (Wigent) Stedman. He married June Cupp on June 18, 1949, and she survives.

He had worked at Midwest Dairy and later for the Messenger Corporation where he retired as a warehouse foreman. He was a graduate of the Watervliet High School with the class of 1940. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II in the battle of Midway and was on the Yorktown aircraft carrier when it sank. He was a member of Gillen Post No. 33 American Legion.

Surviving with his wife, June, of Bedford are two daughters: Candace and Christine Stedman both of Bedford.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday from the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery in Auburn.

Friends may call from 3:30 to 8 p.m. on Friday and from noon until the service on Saturday at the mortuary.

Carl F. Bushee

Feb. 18, 1961 — April 29, 2008

MITCHELL — Carl F. Bushee, 47, Mitchell, died Tuesday in Franklin, Tenn.

Born Feb. 18, 1961, in Burlington, Vt., he was the son of Howard Bushee and Janice Booska.

He was a truck driver for Jefferson Trucking of Shoals.

He was a 1979 graduate of Vergennes High School in Vergennes, Vt. He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Teamsters Local No. 135, and the Bedford Eagles

Survivors include his mother, Janice Bushee of Vergennes, Vt.; a brother, Matt Bushee of Vergennes; two nephews: Jake Bushee and Josh Bushee, both of Vergennes; his companion, Sue Judah of Mitchell; a chosen daughter, Mecca Jones and husband Jeff of Springville; a chosen son, Shannon Judah of Bedford; chosen grandchildren: Kristen Cain of Mitchell and Allison and Caitlin Jones of Springville; and chosen great-grandsons: Darrian and Gavin Cain of Mitchell.

He was preceded in death by his father and grandparents.

Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Saturday at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home in Bedford. A Rosary service will be at 7:30 p.m.

Burial will be in Vermont.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Hospital Burn Center or White River Humane Society.

Ronald Kemple, Mitchell, died at 2 a.m. Thursday at his residence. Arrangements are pending at Chastain Funeral Home in Mitchell.

Sharon R. Trueblood, 73, Bedford, died at 4:13 p.m. Wednesday at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Arrangemenrts are pending at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home in Bedford.
