Priscilla J. Chastain

Sept. 29, 1925 — Feb. 5, 2010

Priscilla J. Chastain, 84, of Bedford, died at 3:06 p.m. on Friday at Dunn Memorial Hospital.

Born Sept. 29, 1925, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of John Elmer and Lottie M. (Crawford) Beaver. She married Carl E. Green. She later married Jasper Chastain on March 3, 1963, and he preceded her in death on March 11, 1998.

She graduated from Shawswick High School and was the co-owner and office manager of Jasper Sheet Metal. She was a member of the First Christian Church, former member of the board of directors for the Thornton Memorial Boys Club, member of the Lawrence County Historical and Genealogical Society and the Erie Homemakers Club. She was instrumental in starting the Lawrence County Rock Club in the 1960s and very active in her political party. Priscilla was a former assessor for Shawswick Township. She was awarded the Sagamore of the Wabash by then Gov. Evan Bayh.

Survivors include two sons, Joe D. Green and Jeffery D. Chastain; one daughter, Rita Y. Green Meyer; two stepdaughters, Phyllis Baker and Barbara McCullough; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; 13 step great-grandchildren; and a brother, Harold Beaver.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jasper; five brothers, John L., David, Frank, Ralph and Phillip; three sisters, Ellen, Dorothy and Rebecca; and one stepdaughter, Mary Graves.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Tuesday in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with the Rev. Bob Dailey officiating. Burial will follow in Cresthaven Memory Gardens.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the mortuary.

Joan E. Turner

Sept. 5, 1937 — Feb. 6, 2010

Joan E. (Knight) Turner, 72, of 591 Donica Church Road, Bedford, died at 12:27 a.m. on Saturday at the home of her daughter.

Born Sept. 5, 1937, in Bedford, she was the daughter of Ben and Helen (Sowder) Knight. She attended Needmore School. She married Archie V. Turner on Jan. 31, 1953, and he preceded her in death on April 9, 2008.

She retired from RCA and was a homemaker. She attended Dive Christian Church, was a member of the Dive Women’s Club the Red Hat Society. She loved to help others who had lost their husbands and take trips with the Dive Women’s Club. Her hobbies included mushroom hunting, getting her hair done and fellowshipping.

Survivors include three daughters, Paula Nobles Fraley and husband John of Starke, Fla., Patty Chastain and husband Doug, and Polly Shields, all of Bedford; four grandsons, Ben Nobles of Loogootee, John Paul Chastain, and Isaac and Zachary Shields all of Bedford; one granddaughter, Jessica Chastain; one brother, Benny Knight and wife Linda of Smithville; brother-in-law, Roger Prince; and three great-grandchildren, Lauren, Braxton and Jackson Nobles. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Archie, and one sister Judy Prince.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. on Wednesday in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Johnny Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in the Mount Pleasant Christian Church Cemetery.

Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the mortuary.

Imogene May Todd, 93, Bedford, formerly of Shoals, died at noon on Friday at White River Lodge in Bedford.

She was born Jan. 4, 1917, in Marion County, the daughter of George and Iva May (Crites) Tierney. She married Ernest Howard Todd on Dec. 24, 1939, in Shoals, and he preceded her in death in 1959.

She was a retired clerical worker from Indiana University. She was a member of the Shoals United Methodist Church.

Survivors include sons, Ernest Todd of Melbourne, Fla., and James L. Todd and wife Sandi of Dyer; one daughter Mrs. Nancy Phillips of Melbourne, Fla.; grandchildren, Mike Todd of New York, N.Y., Lori Abram of Bloomington, Gregory Phillips of Gainesville, Fla., and Kendra John of Melbourne, Fla., four great-grandchildren; one brother, Daniel Brooks of Tempe, Ariz.; and one sister, Iva May Lambrecht of Bedford.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one brother, Charles Tierney; and a son, Bruce Allen Todd.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Queen-Lee Funeral Home in Shoals. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery in Shoals.

Mckayla L. Chastain, infant daughter of Justin Scott Chastain and Danielle Marie Childs, passed away at 5:48 p.m. Tuesday, February 2, 2010, at Bloomington Hospital.

She was born February 1, 2010.

Survivors include her parents, Justin Chastain and Danielle Childs, both of Bedford; one sister, Joslynn Tarr of Bedford; grandparents Viola Marie Childs of Bloomington, Tobin Gene Beyers of Ellettsville and Jamie Lynn Chastain of Bedford; great-grandparents, Daniel and Colleen Childs of Bloomington, Rick and Cathy VanMeter of Bedford, Pete and Lucille Pearson of Bedford and Ozella Arthur of Vancouver, Wash.; and several aunts and uncles.

She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Jeffrey Scott Chastain, and aunt, Kelly Lea VanMeter.

Dorothy L. Finney

Dorothy L. Swearingen Finney of Bloomington passed away Friday, February 5, 2010, at the Bloomington Hospital. She was 94

years old. Dorothy was born September 19, 1915, in Bloomington to James and Mabel Morrison Swearingen. She worked for

many years at the RCA plant in Bloomington before retiring as a testing supervisor. Dorothy was a member of the Bedford

Christian Church before her membership of over thirty years at the First Christian Church in Bloomington. Known by her family as

a loving mother, grandmother and sister, Dorothy, will be missed dearly by all of those she leaves behind.

Those that survive her include her daughter, Zenobia Rae Olson and her husband Volney of Bedford; grandson Volney “Gene”

Olson, his wife Jennifer and their son William Olson of Cicero, Indiana; grandson Vance Olson, his wife Tonda and their children,

Meagan Holsapple, Cameron and Caden Olson of McCordsville, Indiana; sister Hazel Swearingen of Bloomington; sister Betty Jo

Densborn and her husband Thomas of Logansport, Indiana; sister Helen Cracraft of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, as well as many

nieces and nephews. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Paul L. Finney, in 1984; sister Doris Crowe

and her husband Alvin; sister Opal Jean and her husband Bob; sister Margaret Weddle and her husband Charles; and brother-

in-law Russell Cracraft. Visitation for Dorothy will be held Tuesday February 9, 2010, from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Allen Funeral

Charles W. Jenkins

JAN. 11, 1935 — FEB. 5, 2010

Charles Wayne Jenkins, 75, of Orleans, passed away Friday evening at the Bloomington Hospital in Bloomington, Indiana. He was surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with cancer.

Charles was born January 11, 1935, in Orleans, Indiana, to Walter and Lillian Faye Voyles Jenkins.

He retired in 2000, as a maintenance machine repairman for the Carlisle Industries in Bloomington. He was an Army veteran. He attended the Mt. Horeb Baptist Church.

Charles was a local musician, who enjoyed playing bluegrass, country and gospel music on his many instruments including the dobro, acoustic guitar and bass.

He was married to Donna M. Harris, and she survives. Also surviving Charles are his two sons, Nathan Carl and his wife, Connie Jenkins of Mitchell, and Mark Wayne and his wife, Katherine Jenkins of Rome, Georgia. Three daughters survive, Gina Byers and husband, Tim Byers of Bedford, Charlotte and husband Barry Watson of Mitchell, and Sutton Jenkins and her husband, Brad Downham of Orleans. One brother, Jack Jenkins of Carmel, Indiana, and one sister, Nancy Poehlein of Salem, survive.

He was Papaw to thirteen grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and one daughter, Debra Murray.

The funeral will be on Tuesday, February 9, at 11 a.m. at the Ochs-Tetrick Funeral Home in Orleans, with Rev. Michael Williams officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Horeb Cemetery, Orleans. Friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Monday from 4 until 8 p.m.

Terry David Wessell, 61, Bedford, died at 6:20 p.m. Thursday at Westview Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.

Born Feb. 9, 1948, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Willis and Violet (McGinness) Wessel.

He was retired from the City of Bedford after 38 years of service with the Street Department.

He was a member of the Salvation Army.

Survivors include three sisters, Donna Livingston of Mitchell, Diane Staggs and husband Lannie of Bedford and Judy Dalton and husband John of Bedford; two brothers, Gary Wessel and wife Rita of Bedford, and Wayne Wessell of Bedford; nephew Roger Livingston of Mitchell; and several other nephews, nieces and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Willis Wessel Jr.; one brother-in-law, Robert Livingston; and two sisters-in-law, Dot Wessell and Mary Wessel.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home in Bedford, with Major David Logan officiating. Burial will be in Hopkins Cemetery in Needmore.

Mary Elizabeth (Ray) Snapp, 91, Bedford, died at 2:05 p.m. Wednesday at Dunn Memorial Hospital.

She was born Nov. 5, 1918, in Shelbyville, the daughter of Russell and Carrie (Armstrong) Ray. She married Clarence Raymond Snapp on Jan. 23, 1938, in Muncie, and he preceded her in death on Nov. 12, 1996.

She was an executive secretary with the Indiana Training Institute, was a proof reader at the Bedford Times-Mail, and was secretary at Bedford High School.

She was a member of the First Methodist Church in Bedford.

Survivors include two sons, Dr. Ray T. Snapp and wife Connie of Bedford, and Ron E. Snapp and wife Rebecca of Bedford; two grandchildren, Ryan Snapp and Erin Lish; one great-granddaughter, London Lish; one brother, Richard Ray of Hope; one niece, Susie Woodward and other nieces; one nephew; and several cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one sister, Katherine “Toot” Walker; and two brothers, Burton “Bud” Ray and Pete Ray.

Private graveside rites are scheduled. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery.

No calling is scheduled.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the White River Humane Society in memory of Mary E. Snapp.

Frederick A. Davis, 97, of Bedford, formerly of Oolitic, died at 2 a.m. on Tuesday at StoneBridge Health Campus in Bedford.

Born Dec. 15, 1912, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Charles and Ethel (May) Davis. He married Ida P. Gyger in 1934 and she preceded him in death on March 30, 2006.

He retired as a supervisor for NWSC Crane in 1975 and attended Gulletts Creek Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Survivors include a daughter, Patsy Tincher of Indianapolis.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two brothers, Everett Eugene and Lee Roy Davis; three sisters, Edna Irene and Mildred George and Marie Wray; and a son, Dennis Davis.

Lawrence Maze Jr., 82, of 797 Lafayette Ave., Oolitic, died at 11:24 a.m. on Tuesday at the Dunn Memorial Hospital.

Born Dec. 17, 1927, in Martin County, he was the son of Lawrence Maze Sr. and Minnie (Simmerman) Maze. He married Lois Charlene Beyers on May 17, 1952, and she preceded him in death on May 25, 2001.

He served in the U.S. Army for 29 years and retired from NWSC Crane after 44 years. He was a member of the Spring Mill F.O.P. and the Oolitic Volunteer Fire Dept.

Survivors include two sons, Ted Maze and wife Anna of Oolitic and Jon Maze and wife Debbie of Bedford; grandchildren, Justin Pogue and wife Michelle, Marci Bennett and husband Bryce, Lesley Miracle and husband Josh, Sarah Maze and Michael Maze; seven great-grandchildren, Jackson, Connor and Logan Miracle, Brynlea and Kaedyn Bennett and Ella Pogue.

He was preceded in death by his parents and wife.

Wesley Baldwin, 78, of Orleans, died Tuesday at the Kindred Hospital South in Greenwood.

He was born April 5, 1931, to Cecil and Amanda (Burton) Baldwin in Orangeville.

He served with the United States Marine Corps. He retired from the former Carpenter Body Works in Mitchell. He was a member of the Cecil B. Martin American Legion Post 250 in Mitchell.

Mr. Baldwin is survived by a sister-in-law, Sue Baldwin; two nieces, Susan Terrell and Donna Lynn Gehl, all of Orleans; there is one great-niece, Lindsay Gehl and one great-nephew, Brent Gehl; and one great-great-nephew, Kayden Gehl.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Don Baldwin, Dennis Baldwin and Earl Baldwin; two sisters, Lois Baldwin and Jo Ann Hackney; and one nephew, Stephen Michael Baldwin.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Ochs-Tetrick Funeral Home in Orleans with the Rev. Lewis Williams officiating. Burial will follow in the Mount Horeb Baptist Cemetery in Orleans. Military rites will be accorded by the Cecil B. Martin American Legion Post 250 of Mitchell.

Wanda L. Dalton, 70, of Buddha, died at 2:25 p.m. Monday at her residence.

Born Nov. 14, 1939, in Buddah, she was the daughter of Calvin “Bud’ and Vivian (Cecil) Shirley. She married Kenny Dalton on July 26, 1958, and he survives.

She was a homemaker and a member of Grace Bible Church. She enjoyed traveling, antiques, quilting and spending time with family.

Survivors include her husband, Kenny of Buddha; two sons, Ken Dalton Jr. and wife Shauna of Bedford, and Brent Dalton of Bedford; one daughter, Pam Barnes and husband Brad of Columbus; grandchildren, Kyle Dalton and wife Tiffany, Macy Dalton, and Sable Dalton, all of Bedford, Christopher Dalton and Valeta of Kansas, Ryan Dalton, Cody Dalton, and Jackson Dalton, all of Bedford, and Jeremy and Zach Barnes, both of Columbus; great-grandchildren, Grant and Grady Dalton; two sisters, Sue Dorsett and Annetta Short; three brothers, Tom Shirley and wife Kay, Larry Shirley and Nelson Shirley; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

A celebration of life will be at 6 p.m. on Thursday at the First Church of God in Bedford with Pastor Dave Mikulsky and the Rev. Mark Duncan officiating. Burial will be in the Tunnelton Cemetery.

Gordon T. Hardman

Oct. 29, 1936 — Jan. 29, 2010

Dr. Gordon Thomas Hardman, 73, Mitchell, passed away at 10:10 p.m. Friday at Dunn Memorial Hospital in Bedford.

Born Oct. 29, 1936, in Mitchell, he was the son of Leo Thomas and Mary Louise (Wells) Hardman. He married Jeannette Lee Terrell March 26, 1956.

Tom graduated from Mitchell High School in 1954 and received his bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate degrees from Indiana State University. He was a teacher at Charlestown one year and at Burris School until becoming the principal. He served in that capacity 30-plus years.

His memberships included the Indiana Principals Leadership Academy and Indiana State Teachers Association. Following retirement, he was employed at JayC Food Store.

He coached football, Biddy Basketball, Little League, and coordinated the Punt-Pass-and-Kick competition for Ford Motor Company. He was a past master of the Mitchell Masonic Lodge No. 228 F&AM, former member of the Mitchell Rotary Club and Mitchell City Council. He was a member of the Jacob Finger United Methodist Church and had served as Sunday School Superintendent.

Surviving are his wife, Jeannette Hardman of Mitchell; sons, Michael Thomas Hardman, Mark Allen Hardman and wife Stephanie, and Mathew Aaron Hardman and wife Cheryl, all of Mitchell; daughter, Cathy Bullington and husband Mark of Bedford; eight grandchildren; siblings, John Phillip Hardman and wife Helen of Mitchell; Celeste Sherwood and husband Mike of Indianapolis and Christopher Hardman and wife Theresa of Fortville.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home with Brother Darrin Chastain and Brother Morris Chastain officiating. Burial will be in Mitchell Cemetery.

James F. Cecil

James F. Cecil, 74, Seymour, passed away at 11:30 p.m. Friday at the Waters Nursing Home in Seymour.

Born on July 25, 1935 in Jefferson County, Ky. he was the son of William Leo Cecil and Margaret (Masterson) Cecil.

He was a retired supervisor for the Cummins Engine Company, a Veteran of the Korean War serving in the Air Force and a member of the Assembly of God. He married Mary Rosalie Turner on May 11, 1975, and she survives.

Surviving with his wife, Mary, are his children, Kenny Turner of Seymour, Kim Wood and husband Jason of Bloomington, Ermina Davis and Jeff Turner, both of Seymour, Susan Cecil, Tammy Cecil and Brian Cecil, all of Columbus, and Mike Stroud of Texas; seven grandchildren, Kayla White (Turner), Gregory Warner, Jason Warner, Keelyn Turner, Shaina Turner, Ryan Turner and Stephanie Cecil; three great-grandchildren; one brother: William Cecil of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; mother-in-law, Essie Burnette; sister, Dorothy Rankin; and brothers, Butch and Paul Cecil.

Funeral Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the Elmwood Chapel of Day & Carter Mortuary with the Rev. Bill Johnson and the Rev. Russell Burnette officiating. Burial will follow in the Hilltop Cemetery in Avoca with military services accorded by the members of the American Legion Gillen Post No. 33.

Friends may visit from 4-8 p.m. today at the mortuary.

He loved spending time with his wife and family who wish to express their thanks and gratitude to the staff of Waters Nursing Home in Seymour for their kind loving care.
