Lions Club Pancake Festival Print
Saturday, May 03 2008, 6:00am - 11:59am Hits : 200
Tickets are now on sale for the 58th annual Pancake Festival, scheduled for Sat., May 3, at Thornton Park pavilion under sponsorship of the Bedford Lions Club.
The Lions Club is also making plans for its 12th annual Youth Appreciation Program, to be held Monday, April 28, in the Education  Building at Central Church of Christ, 12th and "N" streets.
The serving of pancakes on May 3 will take place from 6 a.m. until noon, according to chairman Billy Don Baker. Charles Wellman is co-chairman of the event. In addition to "all the pancakes you can eat," the menu will include sausage and coffee or milk, Baker said.
Tickets are $5 for those age 13 and over and $3 for children age 12 and younger. They are available from any club member, or can be purchased at the pavilion on Pancake Festival day.
Assisting at the tables and helping to carry trays will be Oolitic Middle School cheerleaders, and members of Phi Beta Psi sorority will handle the dish-washing.
At the first Pancake Festival held in 1951, proceeds went to the Salvation Army for the purchase of band uniforms and instruments. In recent years proceeds from the festival have been used to help support a number of worthwhile local endeavors.
Lions Club members will again make available pancake carry-out orders at a drive-through lane on the south side of the pavilion. Lions will be assisted at that location by Boy Scouts.
The Lions Club holds two pancake events each year - the Pancake Festival on the first Saturday in May, and the Fall Flapjack Feast the first Saturday in October. The first festival was held in a large tent on the courthouse lawn in downtown Bedford. Since 1990 it has taken place at Thornton Park pavilion.
At the Youth Appreciation Program the Lions will be honoring Lawrence County youths for their involvement in community, school and church activities, according to Bill Morris, who has chaired the event since its inception. Last year there were 27 youths honored during the program.
