| On November 16 at 7 p.m., the Southern Indiana Wind Ensemble will present its fall concert. The program, which will be given in the Bloomington High School North Auditorium, will include a special appearance by David Constantine, an internationally recognized timpanist. Constantine will perform Concertino for Solo Timpani, Winds and Percussion by Donald White. The program will also feature works by Gustav Holst (Second Suite for Military Band in F), Ron Nelson (Lauds: Praise High Day), Howard Hanson (Suite from Merry Mount) and Norman Dello Joio (Variants on a Medieval Hymn). The ensemble will also perform Claude T. Smith’s setting of “Eternal Father Strong to Save” in memory of SIWE member Debra Cardwell Peterson, who passed away October 22, 2009. Music Director Eric Isaacson will conduct. David Constantine was the top prize winner at the Rendez-vous Internationaux de la Timbale (2nd International Timpani Competition of Lyon) in Lyon, France, where he also received the "audience's choice" prize and the prize for the best interpretation of an imposed work. Constantine is a doctoral student in percussion performance at the Indiana University Jacbos School of Music. Constantine is principal timpanist for the Columbus Philharmonic and the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra, and is active recitalist and clinician, having performed throughout Western Europe and the United States. He co-founded the APEX Percussion Duo, which has been performing in the Midwest states since its inception in 2006. Constantine is caption head of marching percussion at Emporia State University in Emporia, Kansas, and teaches percussion at Mooresville High School. Founded in 2007, the Southern Indiana Wind Ensemble is a Bloomington-based, professional-level group of wind and percussion players. Its repertoire emphasizes classic and new concert literature for wind ensemble/concert band. Its membership draws from a six county area drawing from Marion to Orange Counties and includes current and former music teachers, former professional musicians, music and non-music students, and a cross-section of people from the community who have pursued other professions while keeping up their musical skills. |
