01/31/04

Nugent - Harvey W. Nugent, Jr., of Mitchell, IN, died Saturday, January 31, 2004, at Mitchell Manor Living and Rehab Center.  Born on June 6, 1928, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of Harvey W. and Maude (Terry) Nugent.  He married Mary Margaret Phillips on March 5, 1949, and she died September 26, 1988.

Surviving are his companion and caregiver, Mary (Henderson) Hutslar of Mitchell, IN; one son, Anthony D. Nugent of Swansea, IL; one sister, Virginia White of Mitchell, IN; and one grandson.  He was preceded in death by his wife; three sisters:  Dorothy Mae, Pauline, Mary Ellen in infancy, and Gladys Kidwell.

He retired from Naval Surface Warfare Center-Crane with thirty-five years of service and was a U.S. veteran of World War II.  He was a member of Cecil C. Martin American Legion Post No. 250,  Marvin R. Davis Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9107, Mitchell Masonic Lodge No. 228 F&AM, Eagles Lodge No. 654, and Bedford Boat and Sportsman's Club.

Services for Harvey Nugent, Jr. will be at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 3rd, at Chastain Funeral Home with the Rev. Steve Jones officiating.  Burial will follow in Bethel Cemetery with graveside military rites accorded by members of Cecil C. Martin American Legion Post No. 250 and Marvin R. Davis Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9107.  Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Monday, with the memorial service conducted at 7:30 p.m. by the Mitchell Masonic Lodge No. 228 F&AM, or from 11 a.m. until the service time Tuesday at Chastain Funeral Home.

Blackwell - Robert E. Blackwell of Bedford, IN, died Wednesday, January 28, 2004, at Select Specialty Hospital in Bloomington.  Born on December 2, 1938, in Mitchell, IN, he was the son of Ernest N. and Lucille (Luttrell) Blackwell.  He married Gretchen (Eckensberger) Ramey on July 9, 1966, and she survives.

Surviving with his wife are children:  Regina Segraves of Yorktown, IN, Barry Ramey and wife, Sherri, of Wilmington, NC, Donita Gwinnup and husband, Bruce, of Charleston, SC, Greta Lucille Blackwell-Ferraz do Santos and husband, Alexandre E.F.F. dos Santos of Fortaleza, Eara, Brazil; grandchildren, Abby Segraves and David Segraves, Brandi (Ramey) Medlin and husband, Jamie Cole Ramey, Charlotte Ramey, Ian Gwinnup, Caillyn Gwinnup, Keagan Gwinnup, Stefan Blackwell Ferraz, Enzo Blackwell Ferraz; two brothers, Jack Blackwell and wife, Janice, and Danny Blackwell and wife, Ruthanne, all of Bedford, IN; one sister-in-law, Barbara Blackwell of Mitchell, IN; special friend, Miriam Hoover of Evansville, IN; and several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Leon Blackwell; one sister, Shirley Sloan; and one grandson, Liam Addison Gwinnup.

He retired from Public Service Indiana with thirty-five years of service and a 1956 graduate of Mitchell High School and a veteran of the U.S. Army.  He was a member of the Cecil C. Martin American Legion Post No. 250, Marvin R. Davis Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9107, Jacob Finger United Methodist Church, Bedford Masonic Lodge No. 14 F&AM, Murat Temple, Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis, and La-Or-Ma Shrine Club.

Services for Robert Blackwell will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 31st, at Jacob Finger United Methodist Church with Pastor Margaret Pruden officiating.  Burial will follow in Cresthaven Memory Gardens with graveside military rites accorded by members of Cecil C. Martin American Legion Post No. 250 and Marvin R. Davis V.F.W. Post No. 9107.  Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Friday at Chastain Funeral Home and from 9 a.m. until the service time Saturday at the church.  Bedford Masonic Lodge No. 14 F&AM will conduct a memorial service at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.  Memorial gifts are directed to the Jacob Finger United Methodist Church Building Fund.

Prunty - Lindsey Anne Prunty of Avoca, IN, died Wednesday, January 28, 2004, at her residence following a three year illness.  Born on October 15, 1986, in Bedford, IN, she was the daughter of Danny Joe and Mary (Harrell) Prunty.

Surviving are her parents of Avoca, IN; one brother, Shane McDonald of Avoca, IN; one sister, Lacy Prunty of Oolitic, IN; one niece, Nadiyah of Oolitic, IN; several aunts, uncles, and cousins; special friends, Tim and Ruth York.  She was preceded in death by her grandparents.

She was a student at Bedford North Lawrence High School and attended Unity Missionary Baptist Church.  She was a member of the Bedford Youth Bowling League.

Services for Lindsey Prunty will be at 3:00 p.m. Friday, January 30th, at the Day & Carter Mortuary with Pastor Danny Goens officiating.  Burial will follow in Hickory Grove Cemetery.  Friends may call from 10 a.m. until the service time Friday at the Day & Carter Mortuary.

Kughen - Nathan R. Kughen of Bedford, IN, formerly of Marion, IN, died from injuries sustained in an accident on I 69.  Born on November 2, 1976, in New Jersey, he was the son of Raymond E. and Robin (Hall) Kughen.  He married Lorena Jill Southern on December 28, 1999, and she survives.

Surviving with his wife are his parents of Marion, IN; his maternal grandparents, Robert R. and Marion Hall of New Hampshire; two brothers, Daniel R. Kughen and Aaron R. Kughen, both of Massachusetts; one sister, Grace N. Kughen of Marion, IN; one nephew, Robert J. Kughen, and one niece, Emmaline R. Kughen, both of Massachusetts; several aunts and uncles; and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Larry and Barbara (Brock) Southern of Williams, IN.

He was an attorney and of the Baptist faith.

Services for Nathan Kughen will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 31st, at the Day & Carter Mortuary with Bro. Jimmy Tipton officiating.  Burial will follow in Mt. Hunsucker - Donald L. Hunsucker of Bloomington, IN, died Monday, January 26, 2004, at Beverly Health Care of Bloomington.  Born on December 21, 1950, in Seymour, IN, he was the son of Herbert and Hazel (Collier) Hunsucker.  He was married to Brenda Kay Hartsock, and she preceded him in death.

Surviving are three daughters:  Melanie D. Austin and husband, Chris, of Shoals, IN, LaDonna Daviess and husband, David, of Indianapolis, and Stephanie Love of Bloomington, IN; three sons:  Patrick Williams of Otter Creek, KY, Zack Tanner and Scott Tanner, both of Texas; one brother, Herb Hunter of Florida; and five grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.

He was a counselor for Alcoholics Anonymous, a minister, and a member of Hospice in Bloomington.

There will be a memorial service for Donald Hunsucker will be at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, February 1st, at the Twelve Twenty-Four Club at 1412 West 11th Street in Bloomington.  Information provided by the Day & Carter Mortuary.

Kruchten - Ruth H. Kruchten of Bedford, IN, died Sunday, January 25, 2004, at Dunn Memorial Hospital.  Born on February 5, 1913, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Pat and Avis (Maddox) Henderson.  She married Frank George Kruchten on December 15, 1935, and he died April 5, 1974.

Surviving are one daughter, Ann Ray and her husband, Ed, of Bedford, IN; one sister, Evalou Marchetti and her husband, Marco, of Bedford, IN; one grandson, Kyle Ray and his wife, Kimberly, of Bedford, IN; and two great-grandsons, Caleb and Elijah Ray.  She was preceded in death by her husband.

A graduate of Bedford High School and DePauw University, she had been a teacher at Tunnelton and retired as a case worker for the Lawrence County Welfare Dept.  She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the Retired Indiana Public Employees Association, Women's Department Club, AARP, Panhellenic, and the Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority.

Dean - Della V. Dean of Bedford, IN, formerly of Mitchell, IN, died Saturday, January 24, 2004, at Westview Manor Nursing Center.  Born on January 27, 1932, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Henry and Nellie (Bex) Pridemore.  She married Donald E. Dean on December 12, 1967, and he died December 18, 1998.

Surviving are two sons, James M. Blackburn of Mitchell, IN, and Paul E. White of Orleans, IN; seven daughters:  Sue Boger and Laverne Brown, both of Florida, Sandy Snyder of Mitchell, IN, Ruth Bradley of West Baden, IN, Donna Neely and Sheila Mills, both of Orleans, IN, and Crystal Baxter of Bedford, IN; twelve grandchildren, and seventeen great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one brother, Robert Pridemore; and two grandchildren.

She was the owner of Della's Bait Shop in Mitchell and was a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Mitchell.

Services for Della Dean will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 28th, at Haverly Mortuary with the Rev. Steve Freels officiating.  Burial will follow in Mitchell Cemetery.  Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at Haverly Mortuary.

McMillan - Wilma Gonce McMillan of Springville, IN, died Saturday, January 24, 2004, at the Richland-Bean Blossom Health Care Center in Ellettsville, IN.  Born on February 18, 1936, in Popcorn, IN, she was the daughter of WillisE. and Laura C. Gonce.  She married Wendell McAMillan, and he survives.

Surviving with her husband are two daughters, Kathy Brew of Gainesville, GA, and Sandra O'Neal of Bloomington, IN; one step-daughter, Linda Ritter of Oolitic, IN; one sister, Betty Hurt of Salt Lake City, UT; eight grandsons, two great-grandsons, several nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles.  She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Margie Gonce.

She retired after forty years at RCA in Bloomington and was a member of the Popcorn Christian Church.

Services for Wilma McMillan will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, January 29th, at the Day & Carter Mortuary with the Rev. Mundy - Edmund Mundy of Huron, IN, died Friday, January 23, 2004, at Dunn Memorial Hospital.  Born on July 3, 1927, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of Lester and Minda (Johnson) Mundy.  He married Margaret Scott on September 25, 1952, and she died June 20, 1998.  His married Dorothy Fish on February 8, 2000, and she survives.

Surviving with his wife are his mother, Minda Mundy of Mitchell, IN; two daughters, Penny Jones of Huron, IN, and Angie Triplett of Huron, IN; six sons:  Troy Mundy, Randy Mundy, and Tim Mundy, all of Huron, IN, Brian Mundy of Hillsdale, MI, and Donnie Mundy and Shawn Mundy, both of Lexington, NC; two sisters, Berndette Smith of Mitchell, IN, and Geneva Montgomery of Huron, IN; ten grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his father and one sister, Imogene Palmer.

He retired from Carpenter Body Works and was employed at U.S. Gypsum as a security guard.

Services for Edmund Mundy will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday, January 26th, at Chastain Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul Kirby, Carl Brown, and Bob Hicks officiating.  Burial will follow in Port Williams Cemetery.  Friends may call from 3-7 p.m. Sunday and from 9 a.m. until the service time Monday at Chastain Funeral Home.

Thomas - Louella M. Thomas of Columbus, IN, formerly of Bedford, IN, died Friday, January 23, 2004, at the Columbus Health and Rehab Center.  Born on January 12, 1915, in Lawrence County, IN.

Surviving are one daughter, Sondra Bohn of Columbus, IN; one son, the Rev. Gary L. Thomas of St. Louis, MO; one sister, Thelma Byrd of Bedford, IN; three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by two sisters, Grenta Massey and Dorothy Siedles; and one brother, Sam McDonald.

She was a beautician and a member of the First Assembly of God and a volunteer at the Bedford Regional Medical Center for over eleven years.

Services for Louella Thomas will be at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 25th, at the Day & Carter Mortuary with Dr. Dennis Turner and Jeff Nikirk officiating.  Burial will follow in Hilltop Cemetery.  Friends may call on Saturday at the Day & Carter Mortuary.

Dodds - Velma Pauline (Paxton) Dodds of Hanover, IN, formerly of Bedford, IN, died Thursday, January 22, 2004, at King's Daughters' Hospital in Madison, IN.  Born on January 18, 1917, in Oolitic, IN, she was the daughter of John and Mary L. (Morrison) Paxton.  She married Paul L. Dodds on August 16, 1941, and he died November 15, 1987.

Surviving are one grandson, Jon Scott Dodds of Bedford, IN; two nephews, Stephen White of Madison, IN, and Muir Frey of Ann Arbor, MI; one niece, Melissa Pridemore of Winnetka, IL; one great-grandson, Jerrod Dodds of Bedford, IN.  She was preceded in death by her husband; one son, John Dodds; and two sisters, Maxine Frey and June White.

She retired from the NWSC CRANE.  She was a member of the First Baptist Church, AARP, Women's Department Club, Government Retirees' Club, and was past president of the Business and Professional Woman's Club.

There will be graveside services for Velma Dodds at 11:30 a.m. Monday, January 26th, at Cresthaven Memory Gardens.  Friends may call from 10:30 a.m. until the service time Monday at Chresthven Memory Gardens.  Arrangements are under  the direction of the Day & Carter Mortuary.

Green - Rubie R. Green of Mitchell, IN, formerly of Lawrenceport, IN, died January 22, 2004, at Mitchell Manor Nursing & Rehab Center.  Born on September 28, 1909, in Sullivan, IN, she was the daughter of James Joseph and Ida Florence (Terry) Ray.  She married Leon O. Green on December 21, 1935, and he died July 1, 1991.

Surviving are one son, James J. Green of Mitchell, IN; two daughters, Peggy Bundy of Salem, IN, and Sheila Flynn of Bedford, IN; eleven grandchildren, twenty-two great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husband; one son, Tom Green; one grandson, Tony Green; and four brothers:  Floyd, Fred, Daniel, and Ralph Ray.

She had worked at the Jay C Store, the A&P Store, Kern's Grocery, Goldberg's Dress Shop, and Sherman-Berner Clothiers, all formerly in Bedford, and Fletcher's Clothing Store, formerly in Mitchell, IN.  She had also been a cook at Rivervale Park near Lawrenceport.  She and her husband had been foster parents to more than 300 children between 1951 and 1985.  She was a member of the Lawrenceport United Methodist Church and the Eastern Star.

Services for Rubie Green will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday, January 26, at Haverly Mortuary with the Rev. Carl Brown.  Burial will follow in Lawrenceport Cemetery.  Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Sunday and from 8 a.m. until the service time Monday at Haverly Mortuary.

Williams - Homer L. Williams of Bedford, IN, died Thursday, January 22, 2004, at Dunn Memorial Hospital.  Born on July 24, 1932, in Martin County, IN, he was the son of Otis and Grace (Stroud) Williams.  He married Edna Ferguson on August 29, 1965, and she survives.

Surviving with his wife are one daughter, Maxine Hall and her husband, Scott, of Bedford, IN; one brother, Carl Williams of Ellettsville, IN; one sister, Lois Chenault of Bedford, IN; one grandson, Jeremy Williams and his companion, Wendi Stillions; two granddaughters, Erica Hall and her companion, Jeff Moser, and Jennifer Hernandez and her husband, Jeremiah; six great-grandchildren:  Tyler Moser, Hannah and Haleigh Williams, Blaine Stillions, Dakota and Kaylee Owens.  He was preceded in death by by his parents; his first wife, Anna Pearl Williams; two sons, Bobby and Merlin Dale Williams; one daughter, Sondra Kay Owens; three brothers:  Paul, Lester, and Bill Williams; and two sisters, Myrtle George and Viola Williams.

He was a retired heavy equipment operator for Stone City Construction and Rogers Group.  He was a member of the Operating Engineers Local #181.

Services for Homer Williams will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 24th, at the Day & Carter Mortuary with Pastor Kenny Walden officiating.  Burial will follow in Pinkston Hill Cemetery in Fayetteville.  Friends may call from 3-8 p.m. Friday and from noon until the service time Saturday at the Day & Carter Mortuary.

Childers - Edith M. Childers of Orleans, IN, died Monday, January 19, 2004, at her home.  Born on August 18, 1920, in Mitchell, IN, she was the daughter of Howard and Flossie (Pemberton) Cook.  She married Harold Solon Childers on November 12, 1938, and he died August 2, 2000.

Surviving are one daughter, Karen Pogue of Hope, IN; one son, Kenneth Childers of Seymour, IN; one brother, Jesse Cook of Mitchell, IN; seven grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.  She was preceded in death by her husband; one son, Larry Howard Childers; three sisters:  Betty Wood, Thelma Kidwell, and Mickey Ashby; and three brothers:  James, Robert, and Walter Cook.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Nazarene in Mitchell.

Services for Edith Childers will be at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, January 22nd at Haverly Mortuary with the Rev. Mark Bechtel officiating.  Burial will follow in Mitchell Cemetery.  Friends may call from  4-8 p.m. Wednesday and from 11 a.m. until the service time Thursday at Haverly Mortuary.

Pace - Mary J. Pace of Bedford, IN, died Monday, January 19, 2004, at Bloomington Hospital.  Born on August 4, 1922, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of William and Mary Essie (Maddox) Sipes.  She married Virgil "Cotton" Pace on August 16, 1941, and he died October 8, 1997.

Surviving are two sons, Nick Pace and his wife, Shirley, and Danny Pace and his wife, Carla, all of Bedford, IN; two daughters, Patricia Fitzgerald and her husband, John, and Diana Anderson and her husband, Ned, all of Bedford, IN; nine grandchildren:  Jamie Smith and her companion, Trent Niflis, Jackie Lipscomb and her husband, Rob, Jacy Stevens and her husband, Paul, Jordan Smith and her husband, Rusty, Toby Pace and his companion, Kathy, Brian Pace, Daniel Pace, Joshua Pace, and Justin Pace; thirteen great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husband; one daughter, Janet Kay Pace; five brothers:  John, Darcy, Richard, Kenneth, and Ruel Frances Sipes; and five sisters:  Ida and Pauline Sipes, Clarice Ingersoll, Zoe Sharr, and Maxine Bass.

She retired in 1983 as an operator with Indiana Bell with thirty years experience.  She was a member of the Oolitic Baptist Church and the Indiana Telephone Pioneers.

Services for Mary Pace will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, January 22nd, at the Day & Carter Mortuary with the Rev. Richard Tallman officiating.  Burial will follow in Cresthaven Memory Gardens.  Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Day & Carter Mortuary.

McMunn - George J. McMunn, Jr., of Bloomington, IN, died Saturday, January 17, 2003, at the Meadowood Health Pavilion.  Born on August 9, 1927, in Pennsylvania, he was the son of George J. McMunn, Sr. and F. LaVaughn Bestwick.  He married Shirley Brooking on March 5, 1971, and she survives.

Surviving with his wife are three sons:  George J. McMunn, III, and Edward T. McMunn, both of Greensburg, PA, and Jeffrey S. Canada and his wife, Gloria, of Bedford, IN; one daughter, Susan L. Olenick and her husband, Gabe, of Greensburg, PA; four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.  He  was preceded in death by his parents.

A 1952 graduate of the University Pittsburgh, he retired from management for Westinghouse Electric and was a World War II veteran.  He attended Sherwood Oaks Christian Church and was a member of the Masonic Lodge, York Rite, and Bahia Shrine Temple.

Services for George J. McMunn, Jr. will be at 6:00 p.m. Monday, January 19th, at the Day & Carter Mortuary.  Burial will be in Penn Lincoln Memorial Park in East McKeesport, PA.  Friends may call from 1-5 p.m. Monday at the Day & Carter Mortuary.

Mitchell - Buddy Glenn Mitchell of Mitchell, IN, died Friday, January 16, 2004, following a truck-train accident on SR 60 West at Liberty Church Road.  Born on October 18, 1944, in Bedford, IN, he was the son of Harden Emanuel and Eunice Alma (Foley) Mitchell.  He married Lorna L. McKnown on May 4, 1998, and she survives.

Surviving with his wife are stepchildren:  Marsha Parker of Mitchell, IN, Jeff Foster of Washington, IN; two sisters, Connie Root and husband, Norman of Mitchell, IN, and Rita Rudd of Iron Station , NC; and seven step-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents.

He was an employee of the Lawrence County Highway Department and was a 1962 graduate of Mitchell High School.  He attended the Mitchell Wesleyan Church.

Services for Buddy Glenn Mitchell will be at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Mitchell Wesleyan Church with the Rev. Steve Jones and Bro. Reno Bates officiating.  Family graveside services will be on Wednesday at Lawrenceport Cemetery.  Friends may call from 3 p.m. until the service time Tuesday at the church.  Memorial gifts may be made to to Mitchell Wesleyan Church Building Fund.

Oswalt - E. Lucille Oswalt of Bedford, IN, formerly of Mitchell, IN, died Thursday, January 15, 2003, at the Bedford Regional Medical Center.  Born on August 23, 1913, in Clay County, IN, she was the daughter of Jasper Aden and Charlotte (Hock) Turner.  She married James T. Oswalt, M.D. on December 22, 1937, and he died January 13, 1980.

Surviving are one son, James T. Oswalt, Jr. and wife, Barbara, of Mitchell, IN; one daughter, Evelyn Jean Williams and husband, Rob, of Mitchell, IN; five grandchildren:  Alice Oswalt, Vinvent Oswalt and wife, Jennifer, Rebecca Thacker, Matt Williams and wife, Heidi, Nathan Williams and wife, Mary Beth; four step-grandchildren: Pam Miller, Bradley Miller, Dan Miller and wife, Kendra, and Andrew Miller and wife, Stacy; three great-grandchildren:  Megan and Ryan Oswalt and Kate Williams; and two step-great-grandchildren, Logan Miller and Jade Miller.  She was preceded in death by her husband and one sister, Betty Jean Riley.

She was a member of the Mitchell Presbyterian Church, Phi Beta Psi Sorority, Bedford Regional Medical Center Auxiliary.  A 1931 graduate of Brazil High School, she had been a volunteer driver for the American Red Cross during World War II.

Services for Lucille Oswalt will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, January 19th, at Chastain Funeral Home with Bro. Darrin Chastain officiating.  Burial will follow in Cresthaven Memory Gardens.  Friends may call from 2-7 p.m. Sunday and from 9:30 a.m. until the service time Monday at Chastain Funeral Home.  Memorial gifts may be made to Mitchell Community Schools Scholarship Foundation in care of the funeral home.

Pace - Ruby C. Pace of Bedford, IN, died Tuesday, January 13, 2004, at her residence.  Born on September 23, 1912, in Bedford, IN, she was the daughter of Ross ad Chloe Mae (Box) Terrell.  She married Morrell S. Pace on October 11, 1928, and he died January 4, 1971.

Surviving are two daughters, Doris Irene Bunch and her husband, Leon, and Nancy K. Pace, all of Bedford, IN; four sons:  Everett Mack Pace and his wife, Vivian, Roy Edward Pace and his wife, Mary Jane, all of Bedford, IN, Jack Dean Pace and his wife, Ruth, of Oolitic, IN, and Morrell Pace, Jr., of Indianapolis; seventeen grandchildren, thirty great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husband; one son, Robert Dale Pace; five brothers:  Paul, Merle, Raymond, Carl, and George Terrell; one sister, Gladys Barlow; and two grandsons, Randy and Phillip Pace.

She was a housewife and a member of the First Church of God and of the Women of the Church of God.

Vilet - Leonard Frank Vilet of Mitchell, IN, formerly of Western Springs and Riverside, IL, died Tuesday, January 13, 2004, at Westview Nursing and Rehab Center.  Born on November 7, 1916, in Oak Park, IL, he was the son of Joseph and Rose Vilet, Sr.  He married Estelle Hudson, and she preceded him in death.

Surviving are one daughter, Donna Pruett and husband, Gary, of Mitchell, IN; one brother, Joseph Vilet, Jr., of Sycamore, IL; one sister, Ruth Erb of Watertown, WI; and two granddaughters, Betsy Pruett Wolf and husband, Bill, of Highlands Ranch, CO, and Holly Pruett of Mitchell, IN.  He was preceded in death by his wife.

A graduate of Lyons Township High School in LaGrange, IL, he was a pipe fitter/steam fitter and was a US Navy veteran of World War II, serving in the Ninth Naval Construction Brigade (Seabees) at Iwo Jima and a recipient of the Purple Heart.  He was a member of Pipe Fitters' Union Local 597 in Chicago.

Services for Frank Vilet will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 17th, at Chastain Funeral Home with Bro. Coleman - Janet May Coleman of San Diego, CA, formerly of Mitchell, IN, died Wednesday, January 7, 2004, in San Diego.  Born on January 9, 1937, in Mitchell, IN, she was the daughter of Claude and Lela (Riggs) Reynolds.  She married John Coleman on June 9, 1957, and he survives.

Surviving with her husband are two daughters, Shelley Larkins and husband, William, of Portland, OR, and Suzanne Coleman of Mitchell, IN; her mother, Lela Reynolds of Mitchell, IN; and two granddaughters, Zoe and Sally Larkins of Portland, OR.  She was preceded in death by her father.

After twenty-two years she retired from Federal service, having held positions with various agencies in Washington, D.C., Seal Beach, CA, and San Diego, and was working as an Equal Employment Opportunity Specialist upon retirement.  She was a 1955 graduate of Mitchell High School and a 1973 graduate of San Diego State University.  She was a member of the University Christian Church in San Diego, where she served in many volunteer positions.

Hensley - Charles Winfred Hensley of Mitchell, IN, died Saturday, January 10, 2004, at Bedford Regional Medical Center.  Born on May 29, 1933, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of Albert and Ellen (Atchison) Hensley.  He married Frances Pearl Bex on July 9, 1955, and she survives.

Surviving with his wife are two sons, Rick Hensley of Mitchell, IN, and George Hensley of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; one daughter, Pamela Hensley of Norfolk, VA; one brother, Willard Hensley of Mitchell, IN; four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; one niece and one nephew.  He was preceded in death by his parents.

He retired from the Indiana State Highway Department and was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.  He attended the Fairview Church of Christ.

Jackson - Viola S. Jackson of Bedford, IN, died January 10, 2004, at the Bedford Medical Center.  Born on December 22, 1921, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Elmer and Lela (Williamson) Smith.  She married Charles C. Jackson on July 13, 1939, and he survives.

Surviving with her husband are two daughters:  Connie Sue Arnold and her husband, Edward E. of Huntsville, AL, and Linda Kay Gentner and her husband, Craig, of Freemont, CA; one brother, Norman Smith of Oolitic, IN; three sisters:  Alma Smith and Audrey Myers, both of Bedford, IN, and Betty Jo Taflinger of Mitchell, IN; two grandsons, Eddie and Chuck Arnold of Alabama; three great-grandchildren, Sarah, and twin boys Tyler and Spencer, all of Alabama; three step-grandchildren:  Scott, Travis, and Michael Gentner.  She was preceded in death by one sister, Agnes Meadows; and two brothers, Lewis and Leslie Smith.

She was a homemaker and a life-long member of Faith Mission Church.

Walls Hopkins of Mitchell, IN, died Friday, January 9, 2004, at the Bedford Regional Medical Center.  Born of July 26, 1929, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Erie G. and Knoxie L. (Hughes) Terrell.  She married Robert W. Walls on June 12, 1946, and he died October 12, 1992.  She married William R. Hopkins on October 14, 1996, and he survives.

Surviving with her husband are two sons, Daniel R. Walls and his wife, Janet, of Bedford, IN, and Randy J. Walls; two daughters, Belinda L. Chaney and her husband, Harold, and Deborah L. Kirk, all of Bedford, IN; one step-son, Michael Hopkins and his wife, Shelly, of Indianapolis; three brothers:  Wilbert L., Vernie A., and Gary D. Terrell, all of Bedford, IN; Six sisters:  Helen V. Deckard, Marcia D. Canada, Connie L. Murphy, Sharon K. Ratliff, and Rita A. Henderson, all of Bedford, IN, and Jeri J. Gaines of Texas; eleven grandchildren, two step-grandchildren: and several great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, and three grandchildren.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Bryantsville Church of Christ.

Neal - Vicky L. Neal of Bedford, IN, died Friday, January 9, 2004, at the Bloomington Hospital.  Born on November 13, 1954, in Bedford, IN, she was the daughter of Russell and Wanda (Greer) Hutton.  She married Robert F. Neal on June 7, 1994, and he died November 20, 1996.

Surviving is her companion, Charlie Root and his son, Rodney Root of Bedford, IN; he father and step-mother, Russell and Janet Hutton of Bedford, IN; mother-in-law, Violet Bridwell of Bedford, IN; two daughter, Lindsay McCleery of Lafayette, IN, and Abby Anderson of Bedford, IN; one brother, Gary Hutton and his wife, Pat, of Bedford, IN; two step-sons, Frank Neal and R. Jay Neal, both of Indianapolis; one step-daughter, Jeanne Forman of Monticello, IN; one grandson, Logan Russell Bundy; two step-grandsons, David Oberle and Roland Neal; one step-granddaughter, Emmabelle Neal; and two nephews, Kevin and Darren Hutton.  She was preceded in death by her mother, her husband, and her grandmother, Nona Oexman.

She retired from AT&T and was a quality control inspector for Cook's in Bloomington.  She was a member of the Bedford Eagles Lodge #654, American Legion Auxiliary Gillen Post #33, and the Bedford Boat and Sportsman's Club.

Abbott - George A. Abbott of Leesburg, FL, died Thursday, January 8, 2004, at his residence.  Born on August 16, 1936, in Iowa, he was the son of Lyman and Dorthea (Oswandle) Abbott.  He married Sharon K. Grimes on May 18, 1985, and she survives.

Surviving with his wife are one son, Gary B. Abbott and his wife, Jane, of Bedford, IN; one daughter, Dian C. Klumpp and her husband, David, of Bedford, IN; two step-song, Mike Grimes and his wife, Sheila, of Muncie, IN, and Phillip Grives and his wife, Dixean, of Idaho Falls, ID; three brothers:  Bill Abbott of Florida, Charles Abbott of Nevada, and Mark Abbott of Michigan; three sisters:  Marilyn Robertson of Arizona, Dorothy Brandt of Iowa, and Lynn McCloud of North Carolina; his step-mother, Joan Johnson Abbott; five grandchildren, Kara, Eric, and Kayla Abbott and Chelsea and Miles Klumpp; six step-grandchildren:  Kara Cazee, Mike Grives, Robert Gammon, Mackenzie, Trevor, and Kyler Grimes; five step-great-grandchildren:  Kaylen, Taylor, and Jayden Carter, and Macie and Madelynn Grimes.  He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Richard Abbott.

He was retired from the Indiana State Police and was of Protestant faith.  He was a member of the Indiana Troopers Benevolence Association and the Indiana National Guard.

Osborn - Samuel E. Osborn, Jr. of Bedford, IN, died Thursday, January 8, 2004, in Bedford.  Born on December 10, 1920, in Odessa, MO, he was the son of Dr. and Mrs. Samuel E. Osborn.  He married Jeanne M. Moss on May 28, 1944, and she died December 3, 2003.

Surviving are one son, Samuel E. Osborn III and his wife, Pamela, of Atlanta, GA; one daughter, Susan J. King and her husband, Ronald, of Versailles, KY; and five grandchildren:  Samuel E. Osborn IV and his wife, Joey, J. Joseph Osborn and his wife, Elizabeth, Hannah Claire Osborn, Abigail Christine King, and Amanda Marie King.  He was preceded in death by his wife and one brother, Dr. W.R. Osborn.

He established his dental practice in Bedford in 1946 and practiced until 1996.  He served as a detal officer in the U.S. Navy during W.W. II and again during the Korean War.  He was a member of the First Christian Church, where he had served as a deacon and later as an elder, had been a member of the Bedford Rotary Club for over forty years, was a life member of the American Dental Association, the Indiana Dental Association, and the South Central Indiana Dental Society, where he served eighteen years as the Secretary-Treasurer.  In 2001, he was awarded the Honor Dentist of the South Central Dental Society.

Services for Samuel Osborn, Jr. will be at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 13th, at the Day & Carter Mortuary with the Rev. Stevens - Ronald C. Stevens of Bedford, IN, died Monday, January 5, 2004, in Bradenton, FL.  Born December 29, 1939, in Mitchell, IN, he was the son of Walter C. and Josephine Ruth (Compton) Stevens.  He married Priscilla R. Tanksley, and she survives.

Surviving with his wife are one daughter, Jamie Strunk and her husband, Tim, of Bedford, IN; two sons, Paul Stevens and his wife, Jacy, and Ken Stevens and his wife, Vonda, all of Bedford, IN; two brothers, Jerry Stevens and his wife, Judy, of Mitchell, IN, and Jim Stevens and his wife, Sharon of Bedford, IN; one sister, Debbie George and her husband, Jim, of Aurora, IN; eight grandchildren:  Amanda Lawson and her husband, Shawn, Julie Kellams, Kephon Stevens, Elisabeth Strunk, Kiley Stevens, Matthew Strunk, Carter Stevens, and Cooper Stevens; and several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents.

He was retired from NWSC CRANE and was a member of the Hillcrest Christian Church and the Bedford Masonic Lodge #14 F&AM.  Follow his retirement from CRANE, he asisted his brother with Cedar Valley Gold Course.

Jourdan - Esther Laura (Hartman) Jourdan of Evansville, IN, formerly of Bedford, IN, died Sunday, January 4, 2004, at Good Samaritan Home in Evansville.  Born on May 8, 1907, in California, she was the daughter of Lawrence and Meta (Niehaus) Hartman.  She married William P. Jourdan, and he died in 1969.

Surviving are three daughters:  Carolyn M. Jourdan of Indianapolis, Wilma Jean Nesbitt and her husband, Don, of Clarks Summitt, PA, and Elizabeth Ann Machek and her husband, Richard of Madison, IN; one sister, Aline Knaebel of Ormand Beach, FL; six grandchildren:  Susan M. Bauer, Carrie E. Bender, and Laura L. Schutte, all of Evansville, IN, and Amy Ott, John and William Nesbitt, all of Pennsylvania; ten great grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and many nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her husband; two brothers, Arnold Dausmann and Edwin Hartman; and one sister, Hilda Hartman.

She was a school teach for thirty-eight years before retiring in 1973.  After retirement she volunteered numerous hours at Dunn Memorial Hospital.  She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Bedford, where she served as an elder and member of the choir, attended St. Mark's United Church of Christ in Evansville.  She received the Book of Golden Deeds Award, Woman of the Year, and was Grand Marshall of the Bedford Christmas Parade in 1990.

Blake - George R. Blake of Mitchell, IN, died Friday, January 2, 2004, at White River Lodge.  Born on December 11, 1915, in Hardinsburg, KY, he was the son of Chester and Lydia (Blair) Blake.  He married Rosella Holmes, and she died in 1970.  He married DeAnna E. Cooper and she died in 2000.

Surviving are two daughters, Georgett "Peggy" Davis and husband, Merle, and Ann Dotts and husband, Roger, all of Mitchell, IN; four sons:  Henry Blake of Bedford, IN, Albert Blake and wife, Janey, and Guy Blake and wife, Kathy, all of Mitchell, IN, and Joe Blake of Medora, IN; three step-daughters, Elaine Wright of Lawrenceville, IL, and Esther Hamilton of Princeton, IN, and DeAnna Stephens of Ohio;  two step-sons, Marvin Early, Jr. of Lawrenceville, IL, and Ronald Early of Bedford, IN; twenty-four grandchildren and thirty-four great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by two wives; one daughter, Barbara Jean Blake; one son, James R. Blake; four sisters:  Bessie Pate, Dorothy Linsey, Elizabeth Early, and Iva Mae (Bland) Randall; and two brothers, Joe Blake and William Blake.

He was a heavy equipment operator and was retired from Mitchell Crushed Stone.  He was a member of the Apostolic Church of Jesus Christ of Spice Valley.

Kidd - Hobert C. Kidd of Springville, IN, died Saturday, January 3, 2004, at his residence.  Born on Mary 23, 1926, in Delta, KY, he was the son of Harley and Pearlie (Thompson) Kidd.  He married Wilma Jean Meadows on August 14, 1952, and she preceded him in death.

Surviving are one daughter, Linda Sue Smith and her husband, Billy, of Celina, TN; two sons, Steven Kidd and his wife, Allison, of Avoca, IN, and Terry Kidd and his wife, Terri Lynn, of Oolitic, IN; three sisters:  Arie Rush of Bedford, IN, and Dottie Murphy and Wilma Kidd, both of Seymour, IN; two brothers, Gola and Ernie Kidd, both of Bedford, IN; five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and several aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.

He had been a truck driver for several firms, had worked in the aluminum industry, was a timber harvester, and retired from Indiana Limestone Company.  He was a member of the Grace Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon.

Richard - Connie Kelly Richard of Guthrie, IN, died Friday, January 2, 2004, at her residence.  Born February 4, 1945, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Robert O. and Nina F. (Garsnett) Kelly.  she married Jerry Richard on June 20, 1992, and he survives.

Surviving with her husband are one daughter, Tricia Owens Hillenburg and her husband, Dennis, of Bedford, IN; one son, Trent Owens and his wife, Nancy, of Bedford, IN; her mother, Nina Kelly of the Guthrie community; two sister, Cathy A. Gilbert of Santa Claus, IN, and Debbie K. Combs of Unionville, IN; one niece and three nephews.  She was preceded in death by her father.

She was a data technician and secretary at Vitro Corporation in Bloomington and was of the Christian faith.

Sons - Robert Harold Sons of Bedford, IN, died Friday, January 2, 2004, at the Bloomington Hospital.  Born on December 22, 1931, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of William E. and Della M. Sons.  He married Patsy Ruth Conley and she died in 1999.  He married Carolyn Sue Tillett on October 20, 2001, and she survives.

Surviving with his wife are one step-daughter, Melanie Phillips and her husband, David, of Bedford, IN; two step-grandchildren, Cassandra Waldridge of Mitchell, IN, and Kacie Waldridge of Bedford, IN; two step-great-grandchildren, Felicity Again and Tyson Again; and several nieces and nephews.  He was precided by his parents; his first wife; several brothers and sisters; and two children, Beth and Penny (in infancy)

He was employed at RCA for many years was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving as a corporal during the Korean War.  He was a member of the Moose Lodge in Bedford.

Spires - Robert Harold Spires, Jr. of East Oolitic, IN, died December 31, 2003, at his residence.  Born on August 28, 1957, in Bedford, IN, he was the son of Robert H. Spires, Sr. and Shirley White Spires.  He married Sherry Johnson on December 12, 1988, and she survives.

Surviving with his wife are two sons, Robert Summitt and Cody Spires, both at home; four sisters:  Donna Jean May and her husband, Bill, Cathy Jo Baker and her husband, Mike, Stormi swartz and Kristie June Nelson, and her husband, John; five brothers:  Tony Dale Spires, Danny Lee Spires, Randy Scott Swartz, Claude David Swartz, and Ricky Dean Spires.  He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Debbie Lynn Spires and Linda Jamison.

He was a member of the Eagles Lodge and the American Legion.

Brock - Dean Merton Brock of Bedford, IN, died Tuesday, December 30, 2003, at his residence.  Born on July 5, 1925, in Bedford, IN, he was the son of Paul and Edna Pearl (Roberts) Brock.  He married Norma J. Marshall on December 3, 1962, and she survives.

Surviving with his wife are one daughter, Sara Snyder and her husband, Alex, of Bedford, IN; one son, Daniel E. Noble and his wife, Marlene, of French Lick, IN; four grandchildren:  Amble Noble, Chris Mills, Quiana Hall, Marshall Noble; step-grandchildren:  Sara Derringer, Alex Snyder, KayC Snyder, and John Snyder; one niece, Susie Hancock, and one nephew Ronal Dean Brock.  He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ralph and Ronal Brock.

He retired from Indiana Bell after forty years of service.  He was a member of St. Vincent Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, and Elks Lodge #826.

Cummings - Esther Lucille Cummings of Bedford, IN, died Tuesday, December 30, 2003, at Dunn Memorial Hospital.  Born on March 20, 1932, in Lawrenceville, IL, she was the daughter of Elmer S. and Lora A. (Kendall) Roach.  She married Joseph W. Cummings on December 9, 1950, and he survives.

Surviving with her husband are two daughters, Ethel Harden of Bedford, IN, and Alice Striegel of Bloomington, IN; one son, Gerald Cummings of Bedford, IN; one brother, John Roach of French Lick, IN; four sisters:  Dorothy Billingham of Bradenton, FL, Hazel Carter of Huntington, IN, Mary Hack of Lincoln, MO, and Ruth Worak of Bedford, IN; two grandsons, Joseph and Charles Hardin; two granddaughters, Adria and Andria Striegel; and four great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents, six brothers and sisters; and one grandson, Cory Ingle.

Todd - Dorothy M. Todd of Williams, IN, died Tuesday, December 30, 2003, at the Hospitality House.  Born October 16, 1912, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of William and Mary (Cokenour) Malott.  She married John Todd, and he died in May 1998.

Surviving are two daughters, Sandra Allen and her husband, Greg, of Bloomfield, IN, and Donna Moore and her husband, Johm, of Oolitic, IN; one son, James Todd and his wife, Linda, of Bedford, IN; eight grandchildren:  Shirley Teegen and Kathy Basler, both of Mitchell, IN, Jeff Strunk, Kenny Todd, Bill Todd, and Jill Todd, all of Bedford, IN, Tina Nolley of Loogootee, IN, and Jenny Strunk of Bloomfield, IN; ten great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her husband; two sisters, Marjorie Sears and Gladys McCall; three brothers:  Ralph, Carl, and Kenneth Malott; and two grandchildren, Kenneth Wayne Moore and Kimberly Michelle Todd.

She was retired from GM in Bedford and was a member of Old Union Christian Church.

Hatfield - Levi E. Hatfield of Bedford, IN, died December 28, 2003, at the home of his daughter.  Born on February 17, 1916, he was the son of George Washington and Jenny (Strosnider) Hatfield.  He married Lilah Sanders on May 28, 1939, and she died on November 16, 2001.

Surviving are one daughter, Sharon Phillips and her husband, Don, of Bedford, IN; three grandchildren:  William Levi Philips of Mission Viejo, CA, John Robert Phillips of Terrace Park, OH, and Julia Govoni of Douglasville, GA; four great-grandchildren:  Robin, Marla, Ian, and Billy; and one niece, Patricia Lee of Eustis, FL.  He was preceded in death by his wife; one sister, Cleta Quillen; one step-sister, Lelah Torphy; and two brothers, George Edward and Marshal Glen Hatfield.

He was a retired sheriff of Lawrence County, a former town marshal for Oolitic, and a disabled veteran of WW II.  He was a member of the Englewood Baptist Church and the Lawrence County G. O. P.

Services for Levi Hatfield will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, January 3rd, at the Englewood Baptist Church with the Rev. Worley - Brenda S. Worley of Springville, IN, died Sunday, December 28, 2003, at St. Vincent Hospice in Indianapolis.  Born on January 27, 1950, in McCreary County, KY, she was the daughter of Harley and Martha (Jones) Phillips.  She married Tommy Joe Worley on March 4, 1964, and he survives.

Surviving with her husband are three daughters:  Kathy Hostetler, Lisa Strunk, and Misty Worley; one son, Jeff Worley; four sisters:  Mary Phillips, Joyce Deckard, Geneva Jones, and Betty Strunk; five brothers:  Roy Phillips, Roger Phillips, Larry Phillips, Arthur Phillips, and David Phillips; and six grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Harley Phillips, Jr.

She retired from G.E. in Bloomington and was a member of the Grace Baptist Church in Springville.

Brown - Imajean Brown of Bedford, IN, died Saturday, December 27, 2003, at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.  Born on April 18, 1926, in Muncie, IN, she was the daughter of Ross and Alta (Carpenter) Gale.  She married Warren H. Brown on January 4, 1947, and he died July 16, 1990.

Surviving are one son, Steve Warren Brown and his wife, Shawn, of Bedford, IN; four daughters:  Mona Klarer and her husband, Ron, of Lewisburg, TN, Rita Cravens and her husband, Gary, and Gale Fisher and her husband, Mike, all of Muncie, IN, and Patty Sanders and her husband, Tony, of Bedford, IN; two sisters, Reba Shorter of Ft. Myers, FL, and Naomi Hurry of Lynn, IN; fourteen grandchildren:  Julie Selvey, Phillip Klarer, Tammy Duckworth, Kristi Hensley, William Minor, Gary Fisher, Amanda Smith, Trina Wray, Lynnette Brown, Tony Sanders II, Julie Brooks, Ashlie Brooks, Hollie Reynolds, and Mindy Stevens; seventeen great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson, and several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her husband, three brothers, and five sisters.

She worked at the W.T. Grant Store in Muncie, IN, for several years and was a co-manager with her husband of the Clover Park Apartments in Bedford until 1995.  She continued to volunteer her services to the residents of Clover Park Apts.  She was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Bedford.

King - Louise E. King of Mitchell, died Friday, December 26, 2003, at Mitchell Manor Living and Rehab Center.  Born on November 20, 1921, in Seymour, IN, she was the daughter of William and Josephine (Frazier) Prewitt.  She married Roy Emerson King on May 5, 1941, and he died August 19, 1986.

Surviving are two sons, James E. King and wife, Judy, and Roger W. King, all of Mitchell, IN; one daughter, Patsy Scott and husband, Raymond of Martinsville, IN; one brother, Russell Prewitt of Nashville, IN; two sisters, Doris Prewitt and Alberta King, both of Mitchell, IN; twelve grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husband.

Powell - Walter C. Powell of Mitchell, IN, died Friday, December 26, 2003, at the Bedford Regional Medical Center.  Born on August 21, 1904, in Orange County, IN, he was the son of George Jackson and Martha Ellen (Hoppe) Powell.  He married Sarah Lois Pruett on April 2, 1925, and she died July 23, 1997.

Surviving are sons:  Robert Powell and wife, Imogene of Orleans, IN, Lee C. Powell and wife, Mary, and Bill Powell and wife, Eva, all of Mitchell, IN, Lyle S. Powell and wife, Myra, of Bloomington, IN, and Bernard Powell and wife, Moyne, of Bedford, IN; one daughter, Delores M. Beasley of Mitchell, IN; two nieces, Karen Koons and Greta Osborne, both of Stanford, IN;  one nephew, Joe Edwards of Brentwood, TN; eighteen grandchildren, forty-one great-grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his wife; one brother, Homer Powell; four sisters:  Olive Edwards, Hazel Powell, Effie Powell, and Ora Powell; one grandson, Brian Duane Powell; one granddaughter, Rhonda (Powell) Taylor; and one great-granddaughter, Melissa Taylor.

He was a mechanic.  He was a member of Liberty Baptist Church and taught Sunday School for 65 years.

Chestnut - Bonnie M. Chestnut of Mitchell, IN, died Thursday, December 25, 2003, at Dunn Memorial Hospital.  Born on November 22, 1917, in Lawrence County (Bono Township), IN, she was the daughter of Carl L. and Flossie G. (Hunsucker) Talbott.  She married Walter Chestnut on February 18, 1972, and he survives.

Surviving with her husband are two step-daughters, Sharon Emmons and husband, Jerry, of West Baden Springs, and Patricia Farris and husband, Russell, of Jasper, IN; three sisters:  Fern Talbott of Indianapolis, Esther McKamey of Mitchell, IN, and Vivian Mishler of Worthington, IN; one granddaughter, Susan Backherms and husband, Mike, of Mitchell, IN; one great-granddaughter, Nicole Backherms; six step-grandchildren and six step-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by one daughter, Carolyn Sue Allen; one sister, Lucille Blackwell; and two brothers, Chester Talbott and Leroy Talbott.

She was retired from Naval Surface Warfare-Crane Division and was a member of the Tulip Street Christian Church.

Craig  - Charles D. Craig of Mitchell, IN, died Thursday, December 25, 2003, at his residence.  Born on December 2, 1940, in Green County, IN, he was the son of Roy L. and Kathern (Shelton) Craig.  He married Sharon Mounce on July 11, 1960, and she survives.

Surviving with his wife are four daughters:  Diane Early and Kathy Turner, both of Bedford, IN, Debbie Bauer of Cannelburg, IN, and Sandy Guthrie of Mitchell, IN; one son, Richard Craig of Mitchell, IN; three sisters:  Karen DeGrass and Brenda Phillips, both of Mitchell, IN, and Donna Hackett of Virginia; fourteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Roy E. Craig; and one sister, Anita Thompson.

He had been employed at Carpenter Body Works and retired from Dana Corporation.  He was a member of Lovingway Apostolic Church and a 1958 graduate of Huron High School.

Mattix - Joetta Mattix of Mitchell, IN, died Wednesday, December 24, 2003, at Dunn Memorial Hospital.  Born on April 25, 1931, in Mitchell, IN, she was the daughtr of William Robert Mattix, and he died September 3, 1987.

Surviving are one step-daughter, Sue Edmondson of Mitchell, IN; one step-son, Robert Dale Mattix of Mitchell, IN; one brother-in-law, James Mattix of Mitchell, IN; four sisters-in-law:  Becky Curtis of Bloomington, IN, Rita Williams of Mitchell, IN, Mary Lou Powell of Paoli, IN, and Alta Smith of Indianapolis; and several step-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and one brother.

She owned the former B.J.'s Flea Market in Mitchell and was a former employee of Hoosier Uplands in Mitchell.  She was a member of Gospel Lighthouse Church in Bedford, where she formerly served as secretary.

Gratzer - Robert J. Gratzer of Bedford, IN, died Monday, December 22, 2003, at his residence.  Born on July 13, 1916, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of John and Ruby Hart Gratzer.  He married Dorothy Wood and she preceded him in death.  He married Mildred Isom on December 29, 1994, and she survives.

Surviving with his wife are two step-sons, Tracy Isom and his wife, Bonnie, and Tery Isom and his wife, Vickie, all of Bedford, IN; his caregivers, Charles and Helen Hoopingarner; one step-daughter-in-law, Jean Isom of Greenwood; step-grandchildren, Derek and Kirk Isom, both of Greenwood, IN, Kody Wayne Isom of Bedford, IN, Melissa Murphy of Bloomington, IN, Chris Pfaff and McKenzie Leigh Isom, both of Bedford, IN; he was preceded in death by his wife wife; one daughter, Lavone Gratzer; and one step-son, Ralph Isom.

He was a supervisor at M. Fine & Sons and was a veteran of WW II, serving with the U.S. Army.  He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, American Legion Gillen Post #33, and the Elks Lodge.

Van Antwerp - Cynthia Gayle Van Antwerp of Annandale, VA, formerly of Mitchell, IN, died Monday, December 22, 2003, at her residence.  Born on October 7, 1948, in Mitchell, IN, she was the daughter of Kenneth E. and Marcia A. (Bush) Pruett.  She married Leigh T. Van Antwerp on June 21, 1970, and he survives.

Surviving with her husband are four daughters:  Amy Van Antwerp of Knoxville, TN, Melissa Van Antwerp, Laura Van Anatwerp, and Sarah Van Antwerp, all of Annandale, VA; her mother, Marcia A. Pruett of Mitchell, IN; one brother, Gary Pruett of Mitchell, IN; nieces, Betsy Wolfe and Holly Pruett; several aunts, uncles, and cousins.  She was preceded in death by her father and one brother, Jay Pruett.

A 1966 graduate of Mitchell High School, she was a ten-year employee of Family Christian Stores in Fairfax, VA.  She was a member of St. Stephen's United Methodist Church in Burke, VA.

Jean -  Cecil E. Jean of Campbellsburg, IN, died Sunday, December 21, 2003, at his residence.  Born on October 22, 1911, in Brown Township, Campbellsburg, IN, he was the son of Elmer and Ollie (Perdiew) Jean.  He married Gayle Russell on December 25, 1930, and she died in October 1940.  He married Ulla Mae Guthrie in 1941, and she died December 29, 1997.

Surviving are four daughters:  Kathryn Sullivan and husband, Jack, of Salem, IN, Marilyn Rosenbaum and husband, Wayne, of Martinsville, IN, Sue Williams ad husband, Richard of Clewiston, FL, and Linda McNeely and husband, Terry, of Salem, IN; one son Burl Jean and wife, Carmelita, of Salem IN; one sister, Bonnie Myers of Springport, IN; thirteen grandchildren, twenty-eight great-grandchildren, and eleven great-great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by both wives; one sister, Fern Hardy; one great-grandchild and one great-great-grandchild.

Roberts - Betty J. Roberts, formerly of Bedford, IN, died Saturday, December 20, 2003, at the Columbus Health & Rehab Center in Columbus, IN.  Born on October 11, 1932, she was the daughter of Joe Garland and Julia (Hughes) Hall.  She married Harry E. "Red" Roberts in 1956, and he preceded her in death.

Surviving are one daughter, Pam Ellis of Columbus, IN; three sons:  Mike Allman and Anthony Roberts, both of Arkansas, and William Allman of Seymour, iN; two step-children, Scott Roberts and Robin Privett, both of Muncie, IN; five grandchildren:  Nikki Todd, Justin Allman, Heather Roberts Henry, Brittany Roberts and Rob Ellis; three great-grandchildren:  Gunner Todd, Jordan and Gavin Ellis; five step-grandchildren, and thirteen step-great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Bobby Joe Garland.

Stewart - Marie M. Stewart of Bedford, IN, died Saturday, December 20, 2003, at Westview Nursing & Rehab Center.  Born on December 31, 1910, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Clifford and Maude (Mansfield) Turner.  She married Clifford Stewart, and he died in 1967.  She later married Hollis Winninger, and he preceded her in death.  She then married Joseph Jarosz, and he also preceded her in death.

Surviving are one daughter, Judith Klajda of Geneva, FL; and one grandson, Kevin Colgrazier of London, England.  She was preceded in death by three husbands and one brother (in infancy).

She was a homemaker and a member of the Dive Christian Church.

Young - William C. Young of Heltonville, IN, died Saturday, December 20, 2003, at the Paoli Health & Living Center in Paoli, IN.  Born on July 8, 1931, in Virginia, he was the son of William Ray and Ester Marie (Collins) Young.  He married Mary Ann Deckard on March 13, 1993, and she survives.

Surviving with his wife is one daughter, Mara Eisele of Bedford, IN; one son, Charles Dwayne Young of Salem, IN; two step-sons, Doug and Scott Fleetwood, both of Heltonville, IN; two sisters, Virginia Helton of Medora, IN, and Darlene Silence of Medway, OH; four brothers:  Ralph Young of Medora, IN, Robert Young of Columbus, IN, Paul Young of Seymour, IN, and Kenneth Young of Norman, IN; four grandsons:  Steven Nicholas of Bedford, IN, Brad Young of West Baden, IN, Brian Young of Leesville, IN, and Zachary Eisele of bedford, IN; seven step-grandchildren:  Britney Fleetwood of Medora, IN, Lacie, Harrison, Alexander, Brock Fleetwood, Bailey and Austin Bailiff, all of Bedford, IN; two great-grandchildren, Jaykob and Alexys Nicholas, both of Bedford, IN; and several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents.

He was a carpenter and owner of Young Construction and Charlie's Forms, ad he developed Young's Additions 1 & 2, where there are two street's named after him, Sir Charles Drive and Sir William Drive.  He was also co-owner of Bid-lo and Hoosier State Construction Companies.  He was the former president of the Lawrence County Home Builders Association and was a veteran of the U.S. Marines.  He attended Mundell Christian Church.

Baker - Hiram Rodney Baker of Bedford, IN, died Thursday, December 18, 2003, at his residence.  Born on December 1, 1946, in Linton, IN, he was the son of Daniel and Elizabeth (Wilson) Baker.  He married Sandra Enochs, and she preceded him in death.  He married Phyllis J. Chastain on March 20, 1985, and she survives.

Surviving with his wife are his mother, Elizabeth Dayton of Bedford, IN; two daughters, Any Luman of Bloomington, IN, Shannon Endris and her husband, Brad, of Bedford, IN; four step-daughters:  Kelly Mynett and her husband, Rob, of Muncie, IN, Kathy Crulo, Karen Crulo-Rood and her husband, Rob, all of Bedford, IN, Sally Jackson and her husband, Danny, of Franklin, IN; one brother, Calvert Dayton of Providence, RI; three sisters: Ann Cullison and her husband, Bucky of Owensburg, IN, Christi Gilbert and her husband, Jack, of Mitchell, IN; and Nellie Bea Spencer and her husband, Randy, of Liberty Lake, WA; six grandsons:  Corey and Dylan Endris, both of Bedford, IN, Nick and Sam Crulo and J.T. He was a retired tool and die maker for GM Powertrain and was a veteran of the U.S. Army.  He was a member of Owensburg Baptist Church, Solsberry Lodge #441 F&AM, Bedford Elks Lodge #826, U.A.W. Local #440, life member of V.F.W., American Legion Gillen Post #33, Voiture #1172 La Societe de Quarante Hommes at Huit Chevaux where he was Chef de Gare for three terms, Chemonot for Three terms, Indiana 9th District Grand Cheminot and Indiana SE Grand Chef de Train.

Services for Hiram Baker will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 20th, at the Day & Carter Mortuary with the Rev. Jackson - Wilma Jackson of Bedford, IN, died Wednesday, December 17, 2003, at her residence.  Born on December 30, 1925, in Bedford, IN, she was the daughter of Brian and Evadna (McAffee) Weaver.  She married Paul Jackson, and he survives.

Surviving with her husband are three daughters:  Teresa June Tacket and Tonya Mullis and her husband, Jerry, all of Bedford, IN, ad Kathy Ritchison and her husband, Joe, of Mitchell, IN; one sister, Fern Long of Bedford, IN; and seven grandchildren:  Shelly Tackett Walls, John Tackett, Paul Mullis, Jeremy Mullis, Jason Mullis, Bryce Mann, and Landon Lindley; and eleven great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Lee Weaver.

She was a homemaker.  She attended Grace Full Gospel Church and was a member of Wesley Chapel and Church, Crane Retirees and Visteon Retired Employees.

Stalker - Breanna Marie Stalker of Mitchell, IN, died Wednesday, December 17, 2003, at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.  Born on October 11, 1990, in Ramona, CA, she was the daughter of Robert and Michele (Wilfong) Stalker.

Surviving are her mother and step-father, Michele and Jamie Smith of Mitchell, IN; her father, Robert Stalker of Ramona, CA; one sister, Stephanie Brooke Stalker of Mitchell, IN; one half-brother and sister, Jacob and Chenoa Stalker of Ramona, CA; grandparents, Tom and Gloria Wilfong of Mitchell and Cam and Bonnie Stalker of Trinidad, CO; and several aunts and uncles.

She was a seventh grader at Mitchell Junior High School and a member of Tulip Street Christian Church.

There will be a memorial service for Breanna Stalker at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 23rd, at the First Baptist Church with Pastors Mark Pittman and Bill Graham officiating.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Riley Hospital for Children in care of Chastain Funeral Home.

Williams - Lorene Terrell Williams of Bedford, IN, died Wednesday, December 17, 2003, at Dunn Memorial Hospital.  Born on March 18, 1916, she was the daughter of Zora Carroll.  She married Lee Audrey Williams, Sr. on May 21, 1933, and he died September 20, 2003.

Surviving are one son, Lee A. Williams, Jr., and his wife, Gaynor, of Lima, OH; one daughter, Mayme Jo Denny and her husband, Marc, of Luke Zurich, IL; seven grandchildren:  James M. Williams, Sr., and his wife, Laura of Windermere, FL, Elizabeth T. Renkens and her husband, Joshua of Davenport, IA, Ellen H. Williams of Windermere, FL, J.D. Denny of Bloomington, IN, Chandler Denny and his wife, Cinnamon, and Jack Denny, all of Chicago, IL, and Carson Denny of Lake Zurich, IL; one great grandson, James M. Williams, Jr.; five sisters-in-law, two brothers-in-law, and many nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by one daughter, Mildred Sue (in infancy), and one brother, Clemo Dugger.

She was the co-owner and operator with her husband of Lee's Market on Oolitic Road for twenty-eight years.

There will be graveside services for Lorene Williams at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, December 20th, at the Barbourville Cemetery in Barbourville, KY.  Local arrangements are under the direction of the Day & Carter Mortuary.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Dialysis Center at Dunn Memorial Hospital in honor Conley Williams.

Williams - Wilma Louise Young Williams of Mitchell, IN, died Wednesday, December 17, 2003, at Bloomington Hospital.  Born on January 3, 1930, in Paoli, IN, she was the daughter of Farel and Anna Mae (Condra) Young.  She married Jesse E. Williams on October 10, 1970, and he survives.

Surviving with her husband are one son, Danny Fancher and wife, Carol, of Elmhurst, IL; daughters, Donna Fancher Snow and husband, Kenny, of Mitchell, IN, Connie Fancher Sachleben and husband, Dan, of Milton, KY; step-daughters, Roxann Williams, Cindy Lee, and Marilyn Tarr, all of Mitchell, IN; one sister, Dorothy Kellams of Paoli, IN; eighteen grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by one brother, Eugene Young, and one grandson, Christopher L. Roach.

She was an Avon representative for thirty-three years and a 1948 graduate of Paoli High School.  She attended Woodville Baptist Church and was a member of Order of Eastern Star No. 352.

Services for Wilma Williams will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 20th, at Chastain Funeral Home with the Rev. Lempke - Norma Lempke of Williams, died Tuesday, December 16, 2003, at her residence.  Born on October 17, 1939, in Anderson, IN, she was the daughter of Harold and Beulah Auker (Goodson).  She married Fred Lempke on April 7, 1977, and he survives.

Surviving with her husband is her mother, Beulah Goodson of Williams; two daughters, Rhonda Egler of Mooresville, IN, and Tina Smith of Swansea, IL; two sisters, LaVaughn Rogers of Williams, IN, and Virginia Stohler of Anderson, IN; two brothers, Ludwig and Lowell Auker, both of Anderson, IN; and five grandchildren:  Rachel and Steven Smith, Jennifer, David and Elizabeth Egler.  She was preceded in death by her father; two brothers, Lemoine and Lemond Auker; and one sister, Marlene Walker.

She was a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in Bedford.  She attended the Church of God and was a member of National Association of Retired Federal Employees and the Circle of Friends.

Harper - William L. Harper of Bloomington, IN, died Monday, December 15, 2003, at Bloomington Hospital.  Born on May 9, 1945, in Bedford, IN, he was the son of Atner and Maudelene (Clendenon) Harper.  He married Judy Zimmerman, and she survives.

Surviving with his wife of Bedford, IN, are his children:  Shelia and Jim Groh of Ellettsville, Patty and Kevin Kenney of Bedford, IN, Rita and Victor Reynolds of Oolitic, Howard Harper of Bedford, IN, Susan and Vane Chastain of Bedford, IN, Billy and Lisa Harper of Mitchell, IN; three sisters:  Phyllis Ayres of Bloomington, IN, Evelen Lanning of New Albany, IN, and Helen Hayes of Maryland; fourteen grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, and three step-great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Sonny Harper; and three half-brothers:  Howard, Chester, and Joe Carter.

He was a retired truck driver and diesel mechanic.

O'Donnell - Evalou O'Donnell of Mitchell, IN, died Monday, December 15, 2003, at Mitchell Manor Nursing and Rehab Center.  Born on November 17, 1909, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of William and Emma (Payne) Mann.  She married Russell O'Donnell on July 15, 1939, and he died December 19, 1984.

She was retired from the former Admiral Corporation in Orleans and was a member of the Mitchell Congregation of Jehovah's Wilnesses.

Services for Evalou O'Donnell will be at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, December 18the, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Mitchell  with Bro. Boofer - Jerry D. Boofer of Bedford, IN, died Sunday, December 14, 2003, at his residence.  Born on July 11, 1944, in Monroe County, IN, he was the son of Edward D. and Wanda M. (Moore) Boofer.  He married Nancy L. McCart in 1963, and she survives.

Surviving with his wife are one son, Bradley Dale Boofer and his wife, Jama, of Bloomington, IN; one daughter, Crystal Holmes and her husband, David, of Bedford, IN; four grandchildren:  Kara, Adam, Anna, and Nathan; five uncles:  Robert, Russell, Richard, Ralph, and Raymond Moore.  He was preceded in death by his parents.

He worked at RCA in Bloomington for thirty-five years and then for Phoenix Material Management.  He was a member of Crossroads Community Church.

Bridwell - Olivia (Tia) Bridwell of Bedford, IN, died Sunday, December 14, 2003, at the Bedford Regional Medical Center.  Born on March 23, 1923, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Harold F. and Dorothy P. (Smith) Covey.  She married Jack H. Bridwell on October 23, 1940, and he died November 8, 1995.

Surviving are one son, James H. Bridwell of Phoenix, AZ; one daughter, Marsha D. Hodges and her husband, Ron, of Jupiter, FL; two sisters, Linda Gates of Bedford, IN, and Colleen Hall of Bloomington, IN; one brother, Bill Covey of Ocala, FL; five grandchildren:  Leonie Bridwell, Gabriel Bridwell, and Halley Bridwell, all of Phoenix, AZ, Paige Moser of Spring, TX, and Winna Dunmyer of Boynton Beach, FL; three great-grandchildren, Alexa, Jackson, and Emma Moser, all of Spring, TX, and several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her husband.

She was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church of Bedford.

Hunter - Lucille Hunter of Mitchell, IN, died Sunday, December 14, 2003, at Bloomington Hospital.  Born on August 24, 1910, in Martin County, IN, she was the daughter of Asa and Cora (Klutz) Jones.  She married M. Victor Hunter on September 28, 1929, and he died April 28, 1975.

Surviving are two sons, Myrlen W. Hunter and his wife, Sherlia, of Mitchell, IN, and Donald W. Hunter and his wife, Jerri, of Somerset, PA; seven grandchildren:  Denise Doyle, D'Andra Stone, Bev Hunter, Donnie Hunter, Trudy Trickle, Michelle Weaver, and Christy Ray; fourteen great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husband; two sisters, Elva Wildman and Ethel Stark; and six brothers:  Charles, Bobby, Bud, Kenny, Reid, and Russell Jones.

She was a seamstress and had been employed at Erwin's Greenhouse and Burton City Drug Store.  She was a member of the First Christian Church.

Nation - Terrilou Nation of Bedford, IN, died Sunday, December 14, 2003, at her residence.  Born on October 29, 1948, she was  the daughter of Paul and Lois (Chastain) Shipman.  She married Walt Nation on December 29, 1973, and he survives.

Surviving with her husband are one son, Jeremy Nation and his wife, Sarah, of Bloomington, IN; and one daughter, Mikki Nation and her fiance, Jon Fesmire of Santa Cruz, CA; two grandsons and two granddaughters; an aunt, Myra Shipman and several cousins.  She was preceded in death by her grandparents.

An Academic Advisor for the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University, she graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Indiana University with a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics.  She was a member of the Central Church of Christ, Bloomington Advisors' Council, and Indiana Academic Advisors' Network.

Bridges - Vernon Bridges of Indianapolis, IN, died Saturday, December 13, 2003, at his residence.  Born on February 6, 1914, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of Gus and Blanche (Fields) Bridges.  He married Velma S. Snider on September 5, 1942, and she died on October 22, 2003.

Surviving are one son, Scott Bridges of Indianapolis; three daughters:  Sandra Bauer, Debra Hunt, and Connie Cross, all of Indianapolis; one brother, Ronald Bridges of Indianapolis; two sisters, Mary Janice Bragdon and Bernice Olson, both of Indianapolis; twelve grandchildren, and seventeen great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his wife and four brothers.

He was a retired too and die make for Chevrolet in Indianapolis.

Morris - Edna M. Morris of Bedford, IN, died Saturday, December 13, 2003, at Bedford Regional Medical Center.  Born on September 22, 1911, in Bedford, IN, she was the daughter of Daniel B. and Linda (Asbury) Turpin.  She married William E. Morris on September 27, 1930, and he died on December 16, 1991.

Surviving is one daughter, Karen Frye and her husband, Robert, of Bedford, IN; six grandchildren:  Corbett May, Marcy May, Stacy Boulerice, Shawn Frye, Melanie Lighter, and Emily Frye; seven great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her husband and two sisters, Janie Smith and Katherine Embree.

Gardner - Geneva G. Gardner of Bedford, IN, died Friday, December 12, 2003, at Dunn Memorial Hospital.  Born on November 30, 1916, in Bentonsport, IA, she was the daughter of John and Anna (Corns) Gardner.  She married Stephen Buck in 1934 and he died in 1954.  She then married Ralph Gardner in 1961, and he survives.

Surviving with her husband is one daughter, Judith Ann Adamson of Greenwood, IN; one son, Stephen Buck of Sun City, AZ; two sisters, Lula of Chicago, IL, and Betty of Sarasota, FL; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her first husband and several brothers and sisters.

She was a homemaker and a former owner of Cresthaven Memory Park.  She was a member of First United Methodist Church and Pink Ladies Auxiliary at Dunn Memorial Hospital.

Moore - Myrtle Moore of Bedford, IN, formerly of Springville, IN, died Thursday, December 11, 2003, at the Dunn Memorial Hospital.  Born on July 12, 1912, in Martin County, she was the daughter of Isaac and Eva (Stroud) Wade.  She married Earl Todd and he preceded her in death.  She married Willis Moore and he died on December 8, 1990.

Surviving are two daughters, Vergie Helms and her husband, Jarrell, and Norma Cox and her husband, Fred, all of Bloomfield, IN; two sons, Ernie Todd and his wife, Maxine of Bedford, IN, and Morris Todd, and his wife, Judy, of Bloomfield, IN; three sisters:  Bessie Hawkins, Victorine Rollman, and Ola Morrow, all of Bedford, IN; one brother, Harley Wade of Bedford, IN; twenty-one grandchildren, forty-nine great-grandchildren, and eighteen great-great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by both husbands; one daughter, Mary Evelyn Bryant; three brothers, and three sisters.

She was a homemaker and a member of Mt. Olive Church of Christ.

Duncan - Mary Frances Duncan of Bedford, IN, died Wednesday, December 10, 2003, at Bloomington Hospital.  Born on June 26, 1936, in Cape Girrardo, MO, she was the daughter of Carl and Gracie (Lee) Vincent.  She married Russell Duncan on June 26, 1955, and he died March 14, 1991.

Surviving are one daughter, Carla Wade, and her husband Barry, of Bedford, IN; one son, Charles R. Duncan and his wife, Lisa, of Bedford, IN; two brothers, Kenneth Vincent of Jacksonville, FL, and Marvin Lewis of Bloomington, IN; one grandson, Dylan Duncan; and one granddaughter, Miranda Duncan.

She was the Lawrence County Recorder for eight years.  She then worked at the Bedford Regional Medical Center as a medical secretary.  She was elected Clerk-Treasurer for the City of Bedford and held the position for twenty years.  She was a member of the First Christian Church, where she was active in the Red Rose Circle, a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Senior Citizens Club, John Wallace Chapter of D.A.R., South Central Genealogical Society, and was a volunteer for the new museum of history.

Services for Mary Frances Duncan will be at 11:00 Saturday, December 13th, at the Day & Carter Mortuary with the Rev. Robbins - Wayne L. Robbins of Mitchell, IN, died Wednesday, December 10, 2003, at Bloomington Hospital.  Born on July 29, 1926, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of John and Nellie (Carter) Robbins.  He married Ruthie Lou Neumeister on September 1, 1946, and she died September 26, 1992.

Surviving are two sons:  Wayne Robbins of Richmond, IN, and Michael Robbins of Orleans, IN; three daughters:  Ruth Anne Boteler and her husband, Jeff, of Cottondale, AL, Lois Ann Mitchell and her husband, Donald, of Bedford, IN, and Lee Anna Hanks and her husband, Michael, of Mitchell, IN; three brothers:  Earl Robbins of Melbourne, FL, Johnny and Carl Robbins, both of Bedford, IN; two sisters, Louise Breedlove of Indianapolis and Georgia Roberts of Bedford, IN; thirteen grandchildren, several step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his wife; three brothers:  Glen, Lloyd, and Harold Robbins; one sister, Lucille Toborg, and two in infancy.

He retired from General Motors in Bedford and later worked as a security guard and delivered buses at Carpenter Body Works.  He was a U.S. Navy veteran and attended Dive Christian Church.

Byers - Nancy Kay Byers of Springville, IN, died Tuesday, December 9, 2003, at Bloomington Hospital.  Born on February 22, 1944, in Valparaiso, IN, she was the daughter of Frederick and Jeannette (Kuss) Hagenow.  She married Phil Byers on December 24, 1989, and he survives.

Surviving with her husband are one son, Scott Spear and his wife, Cindy, of Avon, IN; one sister, Carol Dunkelburger of Valparaiso, IN; two brothers, Charles Hagenow of LaPorte, IN, and Rick Hagenow of Kokomo, IN; and three grandchildren, Ryan, Andrew, and Rachel Spear.  She was preceded in death by her parents and one son, Mark Spear.

May - Mary C. May of Bedford, IN, died Monday, December 8, 2003 at Westview Manor.  Born on October 29, 1904, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of James O. and Nettie R. (Mayo) Byers.  She married Perry May on April 1, 1922, and he died January 27, 1972.

Surviving are one son, Bernard May of Bedford, IN; one daughter, Jaunita Turner of Bedford, IN; three half-sisters, Autumn Speer of Arizona, Claudine Altop of Beanblossom, IN, and Mary Lou Day of Monroe County, IN; one half-brother, James Byers, Jr., of Stanford, IN; eight grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husband; two sons, John D. and Claude Edward May; eight brothers; and one sister.

She was a nurses aide in Bedford and Bloomington Hospitals and was a member of the Englewood Baptist Church, Pythian Sisters #310, Rebekah Lodge #91 and the Senior Citizens Club.  She had been a 4-y leader for eighteen years.

Moody - Elva Moody of Mitchell, IN, died Monday, December 8, 2003, at Mitchell Manor Living and Rehab Center.  Born on May 20, 1916, in Kentland, IN, she was the daughter of Otis and Maude (Pickett) Gordon.  She married Garnet Floyd Moody on September 25, 1933, and he died on November 7, 1990.

Surviving are three sons, Maurice M. Moody of Bloomington, IN, Gale E. Moody of Mitchell, IN, and Danny G. Moody of Bedford, IN; fifteen grandchildren, forty great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husband; one son, Dale E. Moody; five brothers:  Glen, Lewis, Raymond, Wayne, and Frank Gordon; and three sisters:  Helena Ensminger, Erma Downey, and Lorena McWithey.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Osgood Christian Church.

McMinds - Josephine M. McMinds of Mitchell, IN, died Sunday, December 7, 2003, at her residence.  Born on January 30, 1907, in Chicago, IL, she was the daughter of Stanley and Mary (Sysol) Zygmunt.  She married Peter J. McMinds, Sr, on June 14, 1927, and he died on October 15, 1995.

Surviving are two daughters, Mary Anne Ahlborn of Highland, IN, and Patricia Boyd of Phoenix, AZ; nine grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husband and one son, P. J. McMinds, Jr., and one great-granddaughter.

In her early days in Hammond, IN, and Champaign, IL, she was a Girl Scout leader, camp counselor, president of the Girls Scout Council, and the Irving School PTA, and was a hospital volunteer.  She moved to Mitchell in 1971, where she was a member of the Mitchell Presbyterian Church, the Westminster Guild, served as a deacon, elder, and Clerk of Session, received an Honorary Life membership in the Presbyterian Women of the Presbyterian Church (USA), and was a member of the Prim Priscilla Extension Homemakers Club.

Services for Josephine McMinds will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, December 11th, at the Mitchell Presbyterian Church with Dr. Tim Jessen officiating.  Burial will follow in Cresthaven Memory Gardens.  Friends may call from 3-7 p.m. Wednesday at the Chastain Funeral Home and from 9 a.m. until the service time Thursday at the church.  In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Jo McMinds Memorial Fund at Mitchell Presbyterian Church or to Hoosier Uplands Home Health and Hospice.

Woods - Bertha Lee "Bertie" Woods of Chicago, IL, formerly of Mitchell, IN, died Friday, December 5, 2003, at Swedish Covenant Hospital in Chicago.  Born on November 25, 1927, in Mitchell, IN, she was the daughter of Kenneth and Leona (Yaney) Mitchell.

Surviving are one son, Brad Woods and his wife, Natalie, of Chicago, IL; one daughter, Midge Ortiz and her husband, Joe, of Chicago, IL; three grandchildren, Teresa Woods, Brad Woods, Jr., and Shannon Barkocy; and one great-granddaughter.

She was a country music entertainer.

There will be a graveside service for Bertha Woods at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 10th, at Mitchell Cemetery. Friends may call from 3-9 p.m. Monday at Suerth Funeral Home in Chicago with Saint Jude service at 7 p.m. and prayer service at 8:30 p.m.  There will be no local visitation.  Chastain Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

Slemp - Rebecca W. Slemp of Mitchell, IN, died Thursday, December 4, 2003, at the Bedford Regional Medical Center.  Born on September 20, 1935, in Mitchell, IN, she was the daughter of Fred and Alice Mildred (Long) White.  She married Bascom L. Slemp on August 10, 1958, and he died on November 4, 1969.

Surviving are one sister, Virginia Sue Oswalt of Topeka, KS; nieces, Alice Oswalt of Bloomington, IN, and Rebecca J. Thacker of Bedford, IN; one nephew, Vincent Oswalt and wife, Jennifer, of Atlanta, GA; one great niece and one great nephew.  She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents; one sister, Nancy Lee White, and one brother, Frederick White.

She was a 1953 graduate of Mitchell High School and received Bachelor of Arts and Master of Science degrees from Indiana University.  She had been a teacher in the Kendallville schools and retired from Mitchell Community Schools in 1993.  She was a member of Tri Kappa, Alpha Omicron Pi Sorority, and the First Christian Church in Mitchell.

Services for for Rebecca Slemp will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, December 8th, at Chastain Funeral Home with Bro. Josh Brumfield officiating.  Burial will follow in Spice Valley Cemetery.  Friends may call from 2-6 p.m. Sunday and from 9:30 a.m. until the service time Monday at Chastain Funeral Home.  Memorial gifts are directed to the Mitchell Community Schools Scholarship Foundation in care of the funeral home.

Walton - Albert (Fred) Walton of Oolitic, IN, died Thursday, December 4, 2003, at the Bedford Regional Medical Center.  Born on June 25, 1947, in Orange County, IN, he was the son of Albert, Sr., and Gertrude Fern (Williams) Walton.  He married Diana Southern on June 26, 1976, and she survives.

Surviving with his wife are his mother, Gertrude Walton of Marengo, IN; three brothers:  Clarence Walton of Bedford, IN, Charlie and John Walton, both of Marengo, IN; four sisters:  Dorothy Spires, Cathy Canada, and Edith Yarberry, all of Bedford, IN, and Alberta Bader of Lafayette, IN; and several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his father and two brothers, Robert and Richard (both in infancy).

He was a mechanic and service station attendant in Bedford and a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving as a Sea Bee for two duty tours in Viet Nam.  He was a member of the Oolitic Church of Christ and the American Legion Gillen Post #33.

Service for Albert Walton will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday, December 8th, at the Day & Carter Mortuary with Bro. Ed Owens officiating.  Burial will follow in Cresthaven Memory Gardens with graveside military rites accorded by members of American Legion Gillen Post #33.  Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Sunday and from 10 a.m. until the service time Monday at the Day & Carter Mortuary.  The family asks that friends consider memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society.

Keithley - Brian Scott Keithley of Bloomington, IN, formerly of Mitchell, IN, died Wednesday, December 3, 2003, at his residence.  Born on September 9, 1964, in Bedford, IN, he was the son of James Robert and Margaret Jean (Beasley) Keithley.

Surviving are one brother, Robert Keithley and his wife, Cindy, of Mitchell, IN; one sister, Ruthellen Lane and her husband, Darrin, of Mitchell, IN; one half-brother, James Keithley and his wife, Pat, of Shelbyville; one half-sister, Diane Broy of Jeffersonville; nephews: Blake and Evan Keithley and Denny and Darren Keithley; nieces: Marisa Lane, Lori and Tiffany Keithley.  He was preceded in death by his parents.

H
