Winter Protection from Deer Damage

The deer certainly have their advocates for protection, but I wonder at times if there is such a thing as protection from the deer!  The "rats with antlers" moved into our vegetable garden the first of September and started eating the plants.  By the first of October we had nothing standing in our garden but the pepper plants and the metal posts we used for staking the tomato plants.  Recently, we suddenly noticed some of our small trees as well were suffering from deer abuse--the bark was seriously damaged.  We wasted no time investing   in tree wrap and spent an afternoon wrapping trees.  I  also  plan to put up barricades around my viburnum bush and the star magnolia, both of which are full of buds awaiting spring.
