Raymond Frederick ‘Fred’ Stout

May 7, 1932 — Feb. 3, 2016

Raymond Frederick (Fred) Stout, 83, of Terre Haute, IN, was called home to our Lord on February 3, 2016. He was born in Terre Haute, IN, to Clifford I. and Rachel E. Stout. He graduated from Wiley High School in 1950. Fred spent four years in the Air Force from 1950-1954 and married Lavedia M Easton on December 26, 1954. He graduated with a teaching degree from Indiana State Teachers College, teaching at Otter Creek and retiring from Sarah Scott after teaching mathematics and chairing the Industrial Arts program. He influenced the lives of many young minds as a teacher, a 4-H leader, and coach at the Pierson Twp. Ball Park. Fred was an active member of the Blackhawk/Pierson Twp. community, serving with the Lions Club, Blackhawk Community Church, and the citizens’ patrol. He was a member of Gideons International and shared his faith speaking at churches and witnessing on college campuses. He was also a 43-year member of the International Skamper Club and taught his family the love of camping. Fred loved teaching others life skills including woodworking, maintenance, and construction projects. His artistic nature may be seen in his many projects and creations. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and sister-Naomi England Burgess.

He is survived by his children, Veta (Don) Goucher of Terre Haute, Bradley (Jenell) Stout of Ellettsville, Vicki (Brent Tomey) Wildman of Norman, Valeri (Kevin) Sweeney of Dayton, OH; 7 grandchildren, Eric (Diana) Goucher, Mindy (Jay) Burgos-Ramirez, Michael Stout, Jackie (JD) O’Mullane, Ben (Natalie) Sweeney, Tiffany (James) Ankeney, and Dannielle Sweeney; and 10 great-grandchildren, Taylor Montgomery, Haley Stout, Maverick O’Mullane, Rory Goucher, Alexander Sweeney, Bria Ankeney, Gabriel Sweeney, Trey Burgo-Ramirez, Lily Ankeney, and Layla Sweeney. The family would like to thank all caregivers who provided loving care to our father. A special thanks to our life-long friend Keith Taylor for his continuous daily contacts to our father these past several months.

Visitation will be Monday, February 8, from 4-8 p.m. at the DeBaun Springhill Chapel in Terre Haute, IN. Funeral Service are Tuesday, February 9, at 1 p.m. at DeBaun Springhill Chapel, with Rev. Franklin ‘Frank’ Hillenberg

April 5, 1930 — Feb. 4, 2016

Franklin “Frank” Hillenberg, 85, of Bedford, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 4, 2016, at Stonecroft Health Campus, in Bloomington, after a brief illness.

Born April 5, 1930, in Lawrence County, he was the son of John W. Hillenberg and Catherine “Kitty” (Stipp) Hillenberg. He married Roxie (Warren) Hillenberg on Aug. 23, 1965; she preceded him in death on Aug. 2, 2009.

He was a graduate of Heltonville High School. He was a first lieutenant in the United States Army, serving during the Korean Conflict.

Frank received a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and later received a Masters and Doctorate in Geography from Indiana University. He was a School Teacher at Parkview Elementary School; a professor of geography at Central Illinois University; and was an avid farmer.

Surviving are three nieces, Arlene (Ed) Potts, Mary Lou (Jerry) Melton, and Karen Sue Phipps; and several great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Roxie; one brother, John Olin (Evelyn) Hillenberg; and one sister, Lorene E. (Wesley) Clifton.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 8, 2016, at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home, with Pastor Lindy Hopkins officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Run Cemetery.

Betty Jane DuBray Hall, 89, of Bedford passed away at 5:15 pm on Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2016, at StoneBridge Health Campus.

Born Feb. 14, 1926, in Florissant, Mo., she was the daughter of Henri (Harry) Pascal DuBray and Gertrude Matilda (Albers) DuBray.

Betty was a graduate of Ferguson High School in Missouri. She married Ray Samuel Hall of Bedford on Feb. 14, 1946. She graduated from Indiana University with a Masters in Education. Betty taught at Parkview and Lincoln Elementary Schools.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bedford since 1955. Professional memberships included NEA, ISTA, NLTA and Retired Teachers. Other memberships included Delta Kappa Gamma, Tri Kappa, University Women and Red Hats. In earlier years, Betty volunteered with The Girl Scouts. Betty and her husband, Ray, chaperoned student study groups to Europe for The Foreign Language League and The American Institute of Foreign Study for a number of years during the summers.

Survivors include her sister, Isabel Davies of Chesterfield, Mo., her children, Brenda Sanders and husband Jack of Johnson City, Tenn., Sam Hall and wife Mellisa of Mount Vernon, and Damon Hall and wife Kimberly of Bedford; six grandchildren, Jayne Sanders, Jill Sanders Dinco, Joseph Hall, Anna Hall D’Lima, Alafair Hall, and Benjamin Hall; three great-grandchildren, Roman D’Lima, Lucius D’Lima, and Julian D’Lima, and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and siblings, Vera Frisella, Ruth Brannan, Harriett DuBray, and Pascal DuBray.

Funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 6 in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with the Rev. Lee Brown officiating. Burial will be at Cresthaven Memorial Gardens.

Marie Louise (Maguire) Edinger

Marie Louise Edinger 84, of Bedford passed away on Tuesday Feb. 2, 2016, at 5 a.m. at her residence.

She was born in New Jersey on Aug. 18, 1931, to Charles and Estewle (Thomlin) Maguire, Marie married Robert Edinger on Nov. 17, 1951, in the Bronx, New York and he preceded her in death in 2014 after 62 years of marriage. She belonged to the congregation of Jehovah’s Witness in Bedford and Mitchell for 60 years.

She was the owner of Nearly New Consignment Shop in Bedford. Marie loved her customers and her loyal customers loved her. She loved helping the elderly getting their garments, sewn, washed and ready for sale; she had a heart of gold. She helped the single mothers clothe and put shoes on their children; she was a true underdog champion up until her passing her customers still asked about her.

Marie was a very loving mother and loved to cook for her family. She loved to shop and buy for her family. She was very proud of being a Bronx girl, but fell in love with southern Indiana. She had the privilege of living next door to her family and her loving daughter. She was a very loving and faithful Jehovah’s Witness.

Survivors include her daughter, Faith Marie Edinger of Bedford; son, Robert Foster Edinger of Bolivia, South America; sisters, Dee Casso of Florida, Gloria Muldering of New York, Shirley Maguire of New York, Margaret Sauriol of Louisville, Ky., and Joan Lewis of New York; brothers, Charles Maguire and Raymond Maguire of New York; grandson, David Edinger of South America; and great-grandchildren, Ravy Elisabeth Lee and Raymond Foster Lee both of Bedford.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; granddaughter, Melody Prow; sister, Jeanette Lund; nephew, Scott Lund; and niece, Jennifer Gold.

Funeral service will be held on Saturday Feb. 6, 2016, at 3 p.m. at Kingdom Hall in Mitchell, with Charles Davis and John Lund officiating. Burial will follow in Cresthaven Memory Garden.

Clella Margaret “Peggy” Simmons, 91, of Bedford, died at 2:31 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2016, at I.U. Health Bedford Hospital.

Born April 4, 1924, in Bedford, she was the daughter of Edgar Joseph and Dorothy (Fletcher) Stevens. She graduated from the Bedford High School with the class of 1943. She married Ray Simmons, Jr. on Feb. 25, 1946, and he survives.

She had worked at the Greystone Gift Shoppe in Bedford for many years. She was a homemaker and a volunteer at the Bedford Regional Medical Center for 18 years. She was a life-time member of the First Baptist Church in Bedford.

Survivors include her husband, Ray, of Bedford; three children, Steve Simmons and wife Vicky of Bedford; Pat Crane and husband Lowell of Mitchell and Mark Simmons and wife Raeanna, of Columbus; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one brother, Ed Stevens of Austin, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Betty Lange.

Funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 8 in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with the Rev. Dave Colgan and the Rev. Lee Brown officiating. Burial will follow in Cresthaven Memory Gardens.

Born April 3, 1928, she was the daughter of Clyde and Zetta (Kern) Hall. She first married Ray Tolbert, then Lowell Keith Lynch, then Earl Hall, all who preceded her in death.

She was a Homemaker and Caregiver and a member of the Fairview Church of Christ.

Surviving are one son, Jerry Dean (Connie) Tolbert of Mitchell; one daughter, Evelyn Diane (Dean) Taylor of Gary; grandchildren, Melody (Kris Gates) Tolbert, Wayne (Charity) Tolbert, Tina (Chad) Dalton, Amy (Kyle) Smith, Randy (Sherrie) Tolbert, Steven Tolbert, and Jeff (Candy) Taylor; several great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Bill Dean (Wanda) Hall and Charles A. Hall.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her three husbands; two sons, Bobby Lee Tolbert and Ray Eugene Tolbert; one brother, Roy Hall; four halfbrothers, James Byrd, Preston Hall, Preston Byrd and Jesse “Jack” Hall; one halfsister, Juanita Hall-Watkins; and a grandson, Dean Hall.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, 2016, at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home, with Pastor Kenny Walden officiating. Burial will be in Port William Cemetery.

Ricky Dale Strunk, 67, of Oolitic, went to his eternal home at 2:50 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2016, at I.U. Hospice House in Bloomington.

Born May 21, 1948, on Patton Hill, he was the son of Elmer and Zina (Hughes) Strunk. He married Debbie Lantz on Jan. 15, 1972, and she survives.

He was a member of the New Life Trinity Tabernacle. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Vietnam War as a Huey Helicopter Crew Chief and Door Gunner in combat with the rank of SP5.

Survivors include his wife, Debbie, of Oolitic; three children, Misty New and husband David of Bloomington, Marla Kirkman and husband Troy of Mitchell and Mathew Strunk and wife Angie of Bedford; seven grandchildren, Grant New, Marayla and Akaylea Kirkman, Anyssa Strunk, Jordan Strunk and wife Kelsey and Jarrod and Jacob Deckard; one great-grandchild, Olivia (Gracie) Strunk; three people who were special to his heart, Stacey Terry, Craig Miller, and Josh Beyers; two brothers, Elmer Strunk, Jr. and wife Martha, Sam Strunk and wife Sue, all of Bedford; and a sister, Donna Faye Stigall of Bedford.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Teresa Webb.

Funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 6 in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Pastor Mark Brock officiating. Burial will follow in Patton Hill Cemetery where military rites will be accorded by members of Gillen Post No. 33 American Legion.

Kenneth Rae Kanavel Sr.

Kenneth Rae Kanavel Sr., 66, passed away at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 29, 2016, at his residence.

Born April 16, 1949, in Lorain, Ohio, he was the son of Walter Harrison and Wanda Helen (Kolbe) Kanavel. He married Linda Sue Williams Oct. 4, 1978.

Kenneth was a certified plumber.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Sue Kanavel of Mitchell; daughter, Charity Houze of Wakeman, Ohio; son, Alan Williams of Lorain, Ohio; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and brother, Donald Chester Kanavel of Ohio.

His parents and son, Kenneth Rae Kanavel Jr., preceded him in death.

Cremation was chosen.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, at Woodville Baptist Church with Brother Jim Russell officiating.

James L. ‘Jim’ Downing

James L. “Jim” Downing, 89, of Orleans, passed away at 12:01 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2016, at StoneBridge Health Campus in Bedford.

James was born in Marion, Grant County, the son of Virgil L. and Mabel I. (Sloderbeck) Downing. James and Donna M. Bockmier were married on June 6, 1948, in the Van Buren United Methodist Church.

He was a member of the Van Buren United Methodist Church and a resident of Van Buren until 2002. He has worshiped with the congregations of the Orleans Mount Pleasant Baptist Church and Orleans United Methodist Church since moving to Orleans.

James was a U.S. Army veteran of WW II, having served with the 773rd Tank Destroyer Battalion until it was disbanded, then with other units in the European Theatre. He was a member of the American Legion Brown-Doyal Post 368 and a member of the Orleans American Legion Warren Brock Post 69.

He is a member of UAW Local 977, having retired in September 1991 after 35 years of service as a die-maker at the GM Corp. CPC Group Plant in Marion. He was previously employed by the Lynch Corp. and Daly Bros. Shoe Company.

He is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 67 years; one daughter, Beth A. (Frank) Hall of Orleans; one son; James M. (Susan) Downing of Orleans; five grandchildren and spouses and eleven great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Margaret Maxine McMillan and Mary Evelyn Mathias.

The funeral will be on Sunday, Feb. 7, at 4 p.m. at Ochs-Tetrick Funeral Home with the Rev. Michael Williams officiating with military rites conducted by the Orleans American Legion Post 69.

Friends are invited to visitation at the funeral home on Sunday from noon until the service.

The graveside service will be on Monday, Feb. 8, at 11:30 a.m. at Van Buren Cemetery, Van Buren.

Preferred memorials may be made to any church listed above, Rick Magill Memorial Clothe-a-Child Fund or the donor’s favorite charity.

Margaret Kay Jordan, 77, passed away Monday afternoon, Feb. 2, 2016, at her home.

Born Jan. 30, 1939, in Seymour, she was the daughter of Clyde and Alice Genevieve (Stout) Beeman. She married Marion Paul Jordan Sept. 22, 2003, and he preceded her in death March 31, 2005.

Margaret was a member and organist at the Mitchell Wesleyan Church. She graduated from North Vernon High School in 1957, and had been employed in home health care.

Survivors include her children, Sue Ann Pridemore of Mitchell, Terri Lynn Box of Bloomfield, and Douglas Wayne (Tiffany) Castetter of Mitchell; grandchildren, Apryl Dawn Kidd and Bradley Douglas Castetter; and stepgrandchildren, Jaylie Sams and Bryar Franklin.

Her parents and husband preceded her in death.

Funeral service will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center with Pastor Steve Jones and Pastor Wes Jones officiating. Cremation was chosen with burial to be at a later date in Vernon Cemetery.

Kathleen F. (Fender) Pirtle

Kathleen F. Pirtle, 84, of Bedford, died at 10:20 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 30, 2016, at I.U. Health Hospice House.

Born July 4, 1931, in Bedford, she was the daughter of Ellis and Ophie (Mitchell) Fender. She married Henry H. Pirtle and he preceded her in death.

She was a master cosmetologist, living and working in Indianapolis for over 40 years. She did hair and makeup for television and worked at the Murat and did hair for all the celebrities who stayed there.

Survivors include a daughter, Henrietta Pirtle of Bedford.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; four brothers, Ray, Clovis, Eugene and John Fender and a sister, Ruth Fender.

Memorial services will be conducted at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 4, in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. until the service on Thursday, Feb. 4 at the Day & Carter Mortuary.

Mark Tolbert, 50, of Bedford passed away on Jan. 30, 2016, at 8:40 p.m. at White River Lodge in Bedford.

He was born in Bedford on April 25, 1965, to Darrell Tolbert and Diane (Thomas) Patton. Mark had worked at Bybee Stone, Sigma Steel, Laborers Union No. 741, and Lineal Contracting.

Survivors include his children, Sarah Anderson of Bedford, Haley Tolbert of Bedford, Terry Tolbert of Smithville; stepson, Branden Robertson of Bedford; grandson, Wyatt Dunbar of Bedford; two sisters, Dorothy (Jim) Barrett of Bedford and Marie (Jim) Wooten of Austin; and sister-in-law, Cindy Robertson of Bedford.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mark loved the outdoors, hunting and riding horses.

Graveside service will be held on Thursday Feb. 4, at 11 a.m. at Port Williams Cemetery in Williams.

Visitation will be on Wednesday Feb. 3, from 4-8 p.m. at Cresthaven Funeral Home.

Cresthaven Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Robert Wayne Sallee

Robert Wayne Sallee, 89, of Bedford, died at 6:26 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 31, 2016, at Johnson Christian Village, Bedford.

Born June 18, 1926, he was the son of Clifford and Lorene (Starr) Sallee. He married Marjorie Covey, who preceded him in death in May, 2005.

Robert attended Tunnelton High School; he owned Publick’s Auto Parts, Bedford; he attended the Central Church of Christ, was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, WW II and was a member of both the American Legion, Gillen Post No. 33, Bedford and of the Masonic Lodge F&AM No. 14, Bedford.

He enjoyed weekend dances and the Mitchell Senior Citizens Club.

Surviving are one son, Troy (Patty Burgi) Sallee; one daughter, Connie Faubion; grandchildren, Kelly (Jonathon) George, Tracy (John) Williams and Jay (Lora) Faubion; great-grandchildren, Hannah George, Graham George, Mason George, Liza (A.J.) Gouty, Margee Williams, Katie Burton, Sidney Faubion, Abby Hargis and Piper Hargis; one great-great-grandchild, Grey Lynn Gouty; one brother, Dick (Carol) Sallee; and one sister, June Waldon.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marjorie; one brother Jack Sallee; and one son-in-law, Robert Faubion.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, 2016, at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home with John Crane officiating. Burial will be in Cresthaven Memory Gardens. Military Rites will be accorded at the grave by members of American Legion Gillen Post No. 33, Bedford.

Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Lorena June (Robbins) Harrell

Lorena June Harrell, 86, of Bedford, died on Sunday, Jan. 31, 2016, at I.U. Health Bloomington Hospital.

Born Feb.13, 1929, in Bedford, she was the daughter of Louis and Mary (Stroud) Robbins. June married Victor J. Harrell on March 4, 1950, and he survives.

She worked in retail sales and was a member of the First Christian Church in Bedford.

Survivors include her husband, Victor of Bedford; one son, Steve Harrell of Bedford; one daughter, Judy Umphress and husband James of Bedford; one granddaughter, Tonya Umphress of Bedford; one brother, Douglas Robbins of Nashville, Tenn.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Loran Robbins.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2016, in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with the Rev. Alan Cloar officiating. Burial will follow in Leatherwood Christian Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4-9 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2016, at the Day & Carter Mortuary.
