E. Bernice Canada

Oct. 28, 1928 — July 4, 2015

Bernice Canada, 86, of Bedford, died at 7:07 a.m. on Saturday at Bliss Place in Bedford.

Born Oct. 28, 1928, in Wayne County, KY., she was the daughter of Rufus N. and A. Myrtle (Jones) Brown. She married James H. Canada on June 26, 1952, and he precedes her in death.

Bernice retired from Sarkes-Tarzian.

She was a kind and gentle soul. She loved to cook and was known for her Sunday dinners.

Survivors include one daughter, E. Roberta Plummer of Bedford; two sons, Nathan H. Canada and wife Marsha of Indianapolis and A. Scot Canada and wife Jill of New Palestine; two grandsons, Eric Canada, and Jeremy Plummer; two great-grandsons, Jesse Plummer, and Ryan Canada; two sisters, Shirley Jones of Amherst, Ohio, and Barbara Tatom of Greenfield; two brothers, Russell Brown of Monticello, Ky., and Howard Brown of Somerset, Ky.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, and one brother, Hurstle Brown.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with the Rev. Dr. Kregg Burris officiating. Burial will follow in Cresthaven Memory Gardens.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Wednesday at the mortuary.

Kenneth E. Porter

Dec. 26, 1936 — July 2, 2015

Kenneth E. Porter, 80, was called home by his Lord at 10:20 p.m. on Thursday at Indiana University Health Bedford Hospital after complications with pneumonia. He was a current member of the family of StoneBridge Health Campus in Bedford, and former resident of Washington.

Ken was born Dec. 26, 1936, to Alva E and Gladys M. Porter in Monroe County.

Surviving are brothers, Robert (Barbara) Porter of Naples Fla., and Leroy (Vicki) Porter of Bloomington; sisters, Janet Landreth (Joe Limp) of Bedford, Brenda (Chris) Kenyon of Kettering Ohio, and Joyce (Ron) Clark of Lakeland, Fla.; along with many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Charles of Bedford.

Ken was blessed with an extraordinary sense of humor and laughter, always willing to entertain with a funny story or remembrance. We are thankful he was able to keep his sense of humor even through his final sickness.

Family and friends may visit Day and Carter Mortuary in Bedford, Wednesday, July 8, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., followed by a graveside service at 2 p.m. at the Valhalla Memory Gardens chapel in Bloomington.

Ken’s family wishes to thank the special people of Stonebridge Health Campus, who became his extended family and where he called home during his residence there.

Nora Bolton

Feb. 21, 1931 — July 4, 2015

Nora Bolton, 84, of Bedford, died at 11:55 p.m. on Saturday at Johnson Christian Village.

Born Feb. 21, 1931, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Opal and Edith Empson. She married Forrest Bolton and he preceded her in death.

She was a beautiful woman with a gentle spirit that left a lasting impression on anyone who met her.

She retired from Wal-Mart in Bedford and was a long time member of the Fayetteville Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Kenny Bolton of Fortson, Ga., and Gary D. Bolton and wife Connie of Fayetteville; three grandchildren, Lee Bolton of Georgia, Mindy Bolton of Florida and Casey Mullis and husband Brady of Bedford; seven great-grandchildren, Jackson and Levi Bolton, and Uly, Jasper, Hiram, Bixie and Eamon Mullis; and one sister, Mary Pendley of Fayetteville.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Dennis Bolton; and two sisters, Jewell Cogswell and Mildred Carter.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Pastor Kenneth Walden officiating. Burial will follow in Fayetteville Community Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. on Tuesday at the mortuary.

Joyce W. Miller

Nov. 16, 1925 — July 3, 2015

Joyce W. Miller, 89, of Bedford, died at 11:25 a.m. on Friday at Garden Villa in Bedford.

Born Nov. 16, 1925, in Broken Bow, Okla., she was the daughter of Albert Curtis Green and Opal Vivian Green Cody. She graduated from Morris High School, Morris, Okla. in 1943.

She went right to work at Red River Ordnance, Texarkana, Texas and worked a year, then entered the U.S. Army Air Corps and took basic training in Fort Oglethorpe, Ga. After basic training, she was put on a troop train to California. It took almost a week to arrive in San Francisco, Calif. and she was then sent to Hammer Field, Fresno, California 4th Air Force.

Joyce worked in the base signal center as a teletype operator. Joyce remembered hearing Tokyo Rose several times in the signal room. Upon discharge she went to Norman, Okla., to a naval air station that was being used as a separation center for the Navy. Joyce met her future husband Paul while she was with the Civil Service and they were married Aug. 7, 1946, in the First Baptist Church in Norman. Upon discharge the Millers returned to Bedford.

Joyce was a member of First Christian Church since 1946. She served as a Deaconess and Deacon. She belonged to Epsilon Sigma Alpha and later Kappa Kappa Sigma.

She loved being a mother and housewife, playing golf, working in her yard and playing bridge.

She is survived by her husband, Paul F. Miller Jr.; two sons, Paul Felix Miller, III, and wife Sharon of Shelbyville and Steve Miller and wife Mona of Bedford; two sisters, Nancy K. Green of Johnson, Ariz., and Nita J. Green of Gilliatt, Wash.; five grandchildren, David Michael Miller, Mark Stephen Miller, Brian Patrick Miller, Michael Stephen Miller and Audra Ann Miller Sater; 10 great-grandchildren, David’s children: Brody A. Miller, Ian Curtis Miller and Cameron Miller, Brian’s children: Blake Miller, Jacob Scott Miller and Olivia Nicole Miller, Michael’s children: Lilly Grace Miller and Ella Elizabeth Miller, and Audra’s children: Coleman Sater and Winifred Sue Sater.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Debra Joy Miller; one sister, Betty Jo Green; four brothers, Curtis E. Green, Dr. L.D. Green, James T. Green and Norman Green.

Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. on Tuesday in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Pastor Alan Cloar officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1-4 p.m. on Tuesday at the mortuary.

Antonio Garofola

Dec. 8, 1922 — July 4, 2015

Antonio “Tony” Garofola, 92, of Bedford, died at 3:10 a.m. Saturday at Garden Villa, Bedford.

Born Dec. 8, 1922, in Oolitic, he was the son of Giuseppe Joseph and Mary Teresa (Sissino) Garofola.

Tony did many odd jobs in the Oolitic area including helping with the delivery of the mail.

He was a member of Oolitic Pentecostal Church.

Surviving are one sister, Fannie White of Brookville; one brother, Joe Garofola of Bedford; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Frank Garofola; one sister, Mary Frances Mosier; three siblings, in infancy; a nephew, Don Mosier and a niece, Tina Garofola.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home, Bedford, with Pastor Marty Speer officiating. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery.

Norma R. Adams

Sept. 23, 1928 — July 4, 2015

Norma Rose Adams, 86, Mooresville, died peacefully on Saturday, in her apartment at Worthington Place, Camby.

Mrs. Adams was born Sept. 23, 1928, in Bedford, to the late Samuel Ralph and Eva Marie (Pavey) Box. Mrs. Adams graduate from Bedford High School in 1946.

She and her late husband, Marion Adams, co-owned Marion Adams Floor Covering for 27 years. She retired in 2000.

She attended Mount Gilead Christian Church. In her more active years, Norma was an avid reader and enjoyed square dancing and camping with Marion.

She married Marion Dean Adams Feb. 20, 1948, and he preceded her in death Nov. 4, 2002. Additionally, she was preceded in death by one son, Bradley K. Adams; brothers, Ralph and Rodney Box.

Survivors include one son, Ernie Adams (Connie) of Camby; sisters, Rachel Galloway (Conrad) of Seymour, RaDonna Sears (Merle) of Mooresville and Regina Gilbert (Bill) of Arizona; grandchildren, Brad Adams (Brandy) of Mooresville and Molly Adams of Seattle; great-grandchildren, Bailynn and Bryson Adams; several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. on Tuesday in the chapel at Carlisle-Branson Funeral Service & Crematory, Mooresville. Interment will be in the White Lick Cemetery, Mooresville.

Friends may call on Tuesday from 11 a.m. until services at 1 p.m.

July 28, 1957 — June 28, 2015

Janeen Grace (Stevens) Conaway passed away at her home peacefully in Westfield on Sunday evening, June 28, 2015, at the age of 57, after a courageous battle with cancer. Janeen was born in Bedford, IN, on July 28, 1957, and grew up in Westfield, IN. She was the daughter of Robert and Lola Stevens. Janeen attended Westfield High School, class of 1975. On November 3, 1973, she was united in marriage with James Edward Conaway.

She is survived by her father, Robert Stevens of Scottsdale, AZ; Lola Stevens of Westfield; husband, James of Westfield; four children, Robert (Jody) Conaway of Westfield, Joshua (Becky) Conaway of Sheridan, Carl (Sarah) Conaway of Louisville, KY, April (Joe) Peterson of Westfield; twelve grandchildren; four siblings, Dan Stevens of Noblesville, Cathy Spurlock of Austin, TX, Ken Stevens of Clinton, and Lesa Bryant of Noblesville.

Janeen is dearly loved by her family and will be always remembered for her strength, selflessness, kindness, sense of family, and unwavering unconditional love. She was the glue and strength of the Conaway family. Her greatest joy in life was celebrating with her family and friends during cookouts and pool parties at her house, as well as holiday gatherings. Janeen’s impact on her family will last generations. She will be sorely missed and forever loved by her family and friends.

A celebration of life will be held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, July 7, 2015, at Kercheval Funeral Home, 306 E. 10th Street, Sheridan, Indiana, with visitation from 11 a.m. until the time of service. Funeral procession to Little Eagle Creek Cemetery will immediately follow.

William R. Fugate

Feb. 14, 1927 — July 2, 2015

William Robert “Bob” “Papaw” Fugate, 88, of Orleans, passed away at his residence on Thursday.

He was born Feb. 14, 1927, in Pennington Gap, Va., the son of William R. and Nancy Ellen (Carter) Fugate. He married Beulah Rasnic on April 6, 1949, and she survives.

He retired from Carpenter Body Works after many years of employment. He also worked for Robinson Auction Services until 1989 when he retired.

He was veteran of the U.S. Navy serving during World War II.

He attended Liberty Christian Church for many years.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years; one son, William R. “Bill” Fugate (Cheri) of Orleans; two grandchildren, Wayne Fugate (Angie) of Paoli and Alex Fugate of Orleans; and great-grandchildren, Lexi and Allie Fugate of Paoli.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Phoebe Litton and Jane Choate.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. on Monday at the Ochs-Tetrick Funeral Home in Orleans with Brother Larry Alvey officiating. Burial will follow in Liberty Christian Cemetery in Orleans with military rites conducted by the Orleans American Legion Warren Brock Post 69.

Friends are invited to visitation at the funeral home from 2-6 p.m. on Sunday.

Lucille Mae (McAlhaney) Davis, 95, of Avoca, died at 4:50 a.m. on Thursday at Richland Bean Blossom Health Care Center in Monroe County.

Born Aug. 13, 1919, in Greene County, she was the daughter of Eddie Glen and Jennie Odell (Hamlin) McAlhaney. She married Robert W. Davis on Oct. 21, 1941, and he preceded her in death on Feb. 23, 2013.

She was a homemaker and had worked at RCA.

She was a member of the Avoca Baptist Church where she served as a custodian for many years.

Survivors include a daughter, Donna Goddard and husband Richard of Bloomington; two sons, Bob Davis and wife Ann of Bloomington and Kent Davis and wife Melinda of Oolitic; grandchildren, Christopher Goddard and wife Jody, Heather Goddard, Jessi Schatzle and husband Joshua, Nathan Davis and wife Jennifer, Matthew and Mark Davis; great grandchildren, Justin, Brandon and Levi Goddard, Davis and Josephine Schatzle, Hudson and Helene Davis; sister-in-law, Delores McAlhaney; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and two brothers, Ralph and Darrel McAlhaney.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Monday in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Pastor Joshua Schatzle officiating. Burial will follow in the Judah Church of Christ Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2-5 p.m. on Sunday and from 10 a.m. until the service on Monday at the mortuary.

Linda Corbin

Linda Corbin, 72, of Bedford, went home to be with our Lord at 3:35 a.m. on Thursday at Indiana University Health Hospice House in Bloomington.

Born May 2, 1943, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Harold and Dorothy (Pruett) Craig. She married Ronald Dean Corbin on Oct. 7, 1961, and he survives.

She was a homemaker and had worked at General Motors.

She was a devoted member of Crossroads Community Church where she served as a Sunday school teacher and was the decorator for all events and head seamstress for all drama programs.

Survivors include her husband, Dean, of Bedford; two daughters, Dena Judah and husband Parker of Bedford and Nikki Bex and husband, Scotty of Bloomington; four grandchildren, Ana Judah Brown and husband Matt, Lance Judah and fiancé Christie, Jonathon Bex and wife Sabrina and Lauren Bex Norman and husband Nate; five “great-grand Sugars,” Aktyn, Westyn, Braeleigh, Raine and Cap; three brothers, Jim, Gary and Larry Craig, all of Bedford; and a sister, Martha Hollars of Bedford.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Tuesday at Crossroads Community Church with Pastor Wayne Ward and Pastor Ken Ransom officiating. Burial will follow in Dive Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. on Monday at the Day & Carter Mortuary and from 11 a.m. until the service on Tuesday at the church.

Robert L. Fortner

Jan. 18, 1935 — June 30, 2015

Robert L. “Bob” Fortner, 80, of Bedford, passed away at 7:35 p.m. on Tuesday surrounded by his family and special caregivers at Garden Villa in Bedford.

Born Jan. 18, 1935, in Lawrence County, he was the son of John and Blanche (Brown) Fortner. He married Phyllis Lavon Fry on Sept. 3, 1960, and she survives.

He was a retired farm drainage contractor and a member of the Dive Christian Church and the Cecil Martin Post No. 250 American Legion. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army proudly serving in Germany.

Survivors include his wife, Lavon, of Bedford; two sons, Brad Fortner and wife Karla and Mark Fortner, all of Bedford; four grandchildren, Rachel, Shelby, Samuel and Silas; one great-grandchild, Noah; and two brothers, Larry Fortner and wife Jill of Bedford and Jerry Fortner and wife Jan of Mitchell.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, John Jr., Jim, Ron and Denny; and one sister, Marilyn Blackburn.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. on Friday in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Johnny Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Cresthaven Memory Gardens where military rites will be accorded at the graveside by members of Cecil Martin Post No.250 American Legion.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday and from noon until the service on Friday at the mortuary.

Linda Corbin, 72, Bedford, died at 3:35 a.m. today at Indiana University Health Hospice House in Bloomington. Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. on Tuesday at Crossroads Community Church. Nellie Manuel

Feb. 6, 1931 — June 29, 2015

Nellie B. Manuel, 84, of Bedford and formerly of Metamora, died Monday at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital.

Born Feb. 6, 1931, in Lenoir City, Tenn., she was the daughter of the late John and Allegro (Lowery) Slover. On June 4, 1948, she became the wife of John W. Manuel, and he preceded her in death in 1994.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Lighthouse Gospel Tabernacle in Metamora.

She enjoyed cooking for her family and was an excellent cook famous for her chicken & dumplings.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Tonie (Ed) Kedzierski of Bedford and Ida (Robert) Higgs of Lawrenceport; seven grandchildren, John Solmes and Wendy, Sarah Kedzierski-Hudson and Dennis, Kenny Tincher and Katie, Wesley Tincher and Tracy, Daniel Tincher and Crystal, Bobby Higgs and Amber, Anthony Keener and Beth; 25 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; five sisters, Charlotte, Frances and Pauletta, of Tennesee, and Rease and Nancy of Mitchell; as well as a brother, Gene.

Besides her parents and husband, John; she was preceded in death by a sister and three brothers.

Family and friends may visit from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday at Ferguson Lee Funeral Home, Bedford, and from 11 a.m. until the service at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Lighthouse Gospel Tabernacle, State Road 229, Metamora.

Pastor Troy Slagle of the Lighthouse Gospel Tabernacle and Brother John Frost will officiate the funeral service at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Lighthouse Gospel Tabernacle. Burial will then follow in Cupps Chapel Cemetery in Metamora.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Lighthouse Gospel Tabernacle.
