Willard E. Smith

Sept. 14, 1925 — Sept. 2, 2015

Willard E. Smith, 89, of Bedford, died at 3:45 p.m. on Wednesday at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital.

Born Sept. 14, 1925, in Bloomington, he was the son of Roosevelt Patrick and Lucille (Holland) Smith. He married Juanita Hicks on May 21, 1949, and she survives.

He retired as a supervisor from RCA in 1985 after 39 years and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.

He was a 57-year member of the Central Church of Christ. He was a ham radio operator and an avid antique radio collector.

Survivors include his wife, Juanita of Bedford; two sons, Greg Smith and wife Jane Hawkins Smith of Port Huron, Mich., and Steve Smith and wife Wendy of Mitchell; five grandchildren, Erin Todd and husband Trent, Tessa Smith, Dayson Smith and wife Marisa, Kaila Smith and Ryan Smith; three great-grandchildren, Grant and Graycen Todd and Kensley Brinegar; and a sister, Carolyn Southern of Bloomington.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Robert Smith; and a sister, Vera Louise Smith.

Private services are planned. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery. No calling hours are scheduled.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that friends consider memorial contributions be made to the White River Humane Society.

Irvin E. Chitwood

Oct. 27, 1939 — Sept. 1, 2015

Irvin Eugene “Gene” Chitwood, 75, Mitchell, passed away at 10:20 p.m. on Tuesday at Indiana University Health Bedford Hospital.

Born Oct. 27, 1939, in Brushy, Mo., he was the son of Irvin E. and Goldie Rae (Woods) Chitwood. He married Victoria Sue Johnson Feb. 9, 1976.

He retired from the CSX Railroad as train master and was of the Methodist faith. He was a member of Mitchell Masonic Lodge No. 228 F&AM.

Gene was a U. S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War and a member of American Legion Post No. 250.

Surviving: wife, Victoria Sue Chitwood of Mitchell; children, Lisa Chitwood-Ward and husband Mark of East Peoria, Ill., Martin Karr and wife Wahneta of Plainfield and Todd Karr and wife Tara of Greenfield; severn grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; dog, Casey; and siblings, Sharon Earnst, Kathy Forshee, Dolly Prope, Barbara Earnst, Sandy Christy, Danny Chitwood and Thurman Chitwood, all of Illinois.

His parents preceded him in death.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center with Brother Jim Russell officiating. Burial will be in Mitchell Cemetery with military honors accorded by American Legion Post No. 250 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9107.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. until the service on Friday at the funeral home.

Jon P. Appleby

April 1, 1945 — Sept. 2, 2015

Jon P. Appleby, 70, of South Lebanon, Ohio and formerly of Bedford, died Wednesday.

He was the loving husband of Carol J. (Carmichael) Appleby; father of David (Cheryl) Appleby and Carrie Sample: brother of Elizabeth Appleby-Hill (Kent); and grandfather of Elijah and Isaiah Sample and Nathan, Jonathan and Lucy Appleby.

He was a graduate of Spencer High School, Indiana University and proud U.S. Navy Veteran of the Vietnam War.

Calling hours will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Stine Kilburn Funeral Home in Lebanon, Ohio. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be in Lebanon Cemetery.

Myra E. Colglazier

Oct. 28, 1950 — Aug. 15, 2015

Myra Elaine Colglazier, 64, Bedford, passed away at 10:30 p.m. on Aug. 15 at the Indiana University Hospice House in Bloomington, after a lengthy and hard fought battle with cancer.

Myra was born October 28, 1950.

A memorial service for Myra will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the First Baptist Church, 1515 20th Street in Bedford, with the Rev. Dr. Kregg Burris officiating.

Family and friends will be received immediately after the service. Everyone is then invited to a Celebration of Myra’s life in the church dining room from noon to 2 p.m. for a light lunch and to join the celebration of Myra’s life.

Myra was a member of the First Baptist Church in Bedford but claimed the Huron Baptist Church, where she started her Christian Journey, as home.

Myra is survived by her brother, Mark Colglazier of Mitchell; and sisters, Marietta Swaim and Anita Colglazier, both of Winston Salem, N.C.; nieces, Kelly (Howard) Zellman of Burbank Calif., and Marcianne Colglazier of Crete, Neb., and nephews, Terry Allen (Blair) Colglazier of Clinton, N.C., and Charles Warren (Mallory) Colglazier of Mitchell.

Her parents Warren G. Colglazier and Francille McDonald Colglazier and a brother Terry Allen Colglazier preceded her in death.

Myra was a graduate of Mitchell High School in 1968, and received degrees from Indiana State University and Indiana University. She was a retired optician. As a young person she was active in 4-H and had served as an IFYE delegate to Jamaica. Myra also loved working with animals and the elderly.

Larry R. Clark

March 19, 1942 — Sept.1, 2015

Larry R. Clark, 73, of Bedford, died at 3 a.m. on Tuesday at his residence.

Born March 19, 1942, in Bedford, he was the son of Lawrence and Theo (Burford) Clark. He married Patsy Kay McDonald on Jan. 8, 1966, and she survives.

He was a sheet metal worker out of Local No. 20. He was a member of the Fairview Community Church and sang bass for One in Spirit Gospel Group.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and an avid deer hunter and bass fisherman.

Survivors include his wife, Patsy of Bedford; a daughter, Patsy Duncan and husband Rick of Bedford; two sons, Bobby Adams and wife Linda of North Vernon and Larry Mark Clark of Tennessee; six grandchildren, Jeremy Adams and wife Carrie, Bob Adams, Bill Adams, Lisa Kay Duncan, John Coe and wife Carriea, Thessaney Taylor and husband Joshua; several great-grandchildren; a sister, Judith Bolton; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter, Lori Ann Duncan; a brother, Terry Clark and twin sons, Donald and David Adams.

Funeral service will be at noon on Friday at the Fairview Community Church, 417 Old US 50 E., Bedford, with Pastor Lindy Hopkins officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery where military rites will be accorded by members of Gillen Post No. 33 American Legion and D.A.V. Chapter 2.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday at the Day & Carter Mortuary and from 10 a.m. until the service on Friday at the Fairview Community Church.
